Vortic Watch Company Military Edition 2021

In 2019, Vortic Watch Company announced a partnership with non-profit, Veteran Watchmakers Initiative with the launch of the Military Edition Watches. The focus of the partnership was to bring awareness to the all volunteer technical school that provides jobs to the disabled war veterans through the art of watchmaking.

Vortic Watch Company Military Edition 2021

The Veteran Watchmaker Initiative (VWI) is the only technical school in the United States dedicated to disabled veterans. The small school, started in 2009, teaches war veterans the highly skilled art of watchmaking. The school is modeled after the Bulova Watch Co. program, which trained disabled veterans for decades after World War II but was shut down in the 1980s when electronic watches became popular. However, the increasing demand for vintage wrist watches and resurgence of American-made products has led to a skills gap in the trade of watchmaking.

Vortic’s exclusive Military Edition Watches are created from pocket watches commissioned by the U.S Army Air Corp (now known as the Air Force) during World War II and were used by aviators to aid in navigation.

Vortic Watch Company Military Edition 2021

The Military Edition is made from original pocket watch movements that are restored by watchmakers from the VWI and other partners. The straps are made with vintage military canvas bags, classic black leather, or bomber jacket material.

After the success of Military Editions released in 2019 and 2020, Vortic Watch Company has announced the launch of the latest addition to this famed collection.

Vortic Watch Company Military Edition 2021

The AN5740-1 was made to order by the United States Government at the beginning of World War II for the use of Army Air Corps. Built according to the strict military aviation specifications, this timepiece is an important creation in the American Watchmaking history.

Three of the Great American Watch Companies – Elgin from Illinois, Waltham from Massachusetts, and Hamilton from Pennsylvania – built mechanisms according to the specifications demanded by Army Air Corps. The dials of these pocket watches were all standardized to be black with simple, white 24-hour markings. Each had a set of white hands, and a long sweeping second hand with a hacking feature that allowed the timepieces to be used not just as pocket watches but as stopwatches.

Vortic Watch Company Military Edition 2021

Named the Master Navigational Watch, these pocket watches were used by the Navigator on Bomber aircraft like the B-17, B-24, and B-29. Each dial was marked with “GCT,” known at the time as Greenwich Civil Time.

Vortic Watch Company Military Edition 2021

Vortic Watch Company has restored the antique mechanical movements of these watches. Mostly produced between 1938 and 1950, these hand-wound calibers have been reinvigorated according to the modem timekeeping standards.

Vortic Watch Company Military Edition 2021

The Military Edition 2021 includes 50 watches featuring an original antique Hamilton 4992B movement. Each timepiece from this new series will be uniquely serial numbered and come with a certificate of authenticity.

Vortic Watch Company Military Edition 2021

Made of 316L grade stainless steel, the case measures 49mm diameter. Despite the massive dimensions, the sloped design of the lugs and the positioning of the crown at 12 o’ clock ensure comfortable fitting. Driven by an antique mechanical movement, this wristwatch displays hour, minute, and hacking sweeping seconds. Equipped with 22 jewels, the hand-wound calibre provides a power reserve of approximately 38 hours.

Vortic Watch Company Military Edition 2021

The dial side of the watch is fitted with a special domed glass handcrafted by White’s Crystals in San Francisco. For the transparent case-back, the brand has opted for Corning Gorilla Glass, which offers unobstructed view of the mechanical movement.

Vortic Watch Company Military Edition 2021

Every Military Edition 2021 watch comes with two straps, custom-made by Greg Stevens Design in Salt Lake City. The first is hand-cut from vintage military canvas duffle bags. The second strap is made of leather and known as “Bomber Jacket” due to its unique texture inspired by a well-worn vintage airmen coat.

The retail price of the Military Edition 2021 watch is US$ 6,995.00. From the sale of each Military Edition watch, $500 will directly benefit the Veterans Watchmaker Initiative’s mission to educate and certify the next generation of American watchmakers.

Colorado- based Vortic Watch Company, recently completed the manufacture of a unique wristwatch using an original, one-of-a-kind 1920 Harley- Davidson pocket watch. The one of a kind watch has been constructed using the original movement (mechanism), dial (face), and hands from the original antique pocket watch. The dial features the Harley-Davidson Logo along with the brand of the original pocket watch manufacturer, South Bend. Everything inside the watch was manufactured in 1920 in South Bend, Indiana. South Bend was one of the great American watch companies, and manufactured thousands of pocket watches, but only a few were customized like this one.

The watch’s antique movement was recovered from a long-discarded pocket watch, and had in fact been “orphaned” from its original case. Vortic specializes in the rehabilitation of such movements, turning them into one-of-a-kind wristwatches that can be worn and enjoyed.

Vortic procured the original movement, dial and hands at an auction, along with many other orphaned movements from the same time period. They then meticulously restored it using only original parts, and manufactured a modern wristwatch case for it, using their trademark 3D-printed titanium engineering system.

Historians and collectors have speculated that the original pocket watch might have been made for a Harley-Davidson dealership as a special piece for a valued customer. Another theory is that it may have been altered by the original owner who was likely a Harley-Davidson fanatic.

Regardless of the original provenance, it is an iconic piece of American history, and owing to this, Vortic has decided to auction the piece to benefit one of their favorite causes, The National Watch and Clock Museum.

The watch will be on display in New York City at the Windup Watch Fair by Worn and Wound November 2nd through 4th.

Vortic Watch Company

Based in Fort Collins, Colorado, Vortic Watch Company is a bespoke luxury watch brand that aims to revive rich history of horological manufacturing in the United States by restoring vintage, American-made pocket watch movements and building custom wristwatches by incorporating original American components and modern technology. Presently, Vortic Watch Company offers three different series of watch collections: American Artisan, Railroad and Journeyman.

Timepieces by Vortic Watch Company are completely designed and made in United States by partnering with home grown companies and utilising original, American made materials and components sourced from various parts of the country:-

  • Movements & dials: Timepieces from American Artisan Series and Rail road Edition house professionally restored vintage era pocket watch movements and dials originally manufactured by legendary watch companies of United States. Journeyman timepieces will be equipped with a contemporary mechanical watch movement manufactured in USA and grand feu enamel dials, also crafted in United States.
  • Watch case: Vortic Watch Company has chosen 3D printing technology to create the cases. The water-resistant cases are 3d printed from titanium by New Jersey based Imperial Machine and Tool, company specializes in advanced machining practices for the aerospace and military industries. M.A.D. Machining in Loveland, USA carries out the post-processing of the 3D printed watch cases.
  • Crystals: For front and back crystals, Vortic Watch Company uses superior quality, shatter proof and scratch resistant Corning Gorilla Glass Manufactured in California, USA.
  • Straps: The leather straps for the timepieces are hand-crafted from American made materials by Hadley Roma’s Stylecraft division in Florida. Each buckle is hand-forged from pure brass or nickel by Smith Shop in Detroit.
  • Other hard-wares: The crowns, screws, and other internal parts are masterfully prepared by Rick at Swiss-O-Matic in Colorado.

American Artisans Series
The American Artisans Series (now available in Version V.02) is the flagship product from the brand. To create each American Artisans Series timepiece, the brand professionally restores the vintage pocket watch movements, dial and hands from the historical American watch companies like Elgin, Waltham, Illinois, Ball etc and then assembled into a 3D printed case.

The Vortic Watch Company has incorporated a watch builder tool on its website so that the customers can create his choice of timepiece online by selecting different type and styles of movement, dial, hands, case finishes, crowns and straps. The brand also offers pre-fabricated watches from the American Artisans Series. Available in 36mm, 46mm or 50mm size, the 3D printed titanium case features a water resistant design and exhibition caseback.

Railroad Edition
The Railroad Edition wristwatches are powered by restored, lever-set, railroad Grade pocket watch movements that were originally manufactured by one of the various great American watch companies. Due to the large size of railroad grade pocket watch movements, the Railroad Edition is available in a 50mm case size only. With the Railroad Edition Watch Builder tool, the customer can finalise the movement and other components to draw his own timepiece. The Railroad Edition watch features a removable, cam-lock, stainless steel bezel, a 3D printed titanium body, and a stainless steel exhibition back that work together to create a water resistant design.

Vortic’s 3-piece Railroad Edition case has a very special design. The body and lugs are 3D printed from titanium while the coin-edge bezel and exhibition back are machined from solid, 316L stainless steel. The bezel was created to be removable, by hand, in order to access the lever set action of the movement as well as create a water tight seal when secured to the body of the case. Unlike its pocket watch predecessors, Vortic’s bezel utilizes a proprietary cam-lock system to make setting the time simple and easy.

Journeyman Series
The Journeyman Series by Vortic Watch Company is an entirely new, American Made watch that draws inspiration from the United States’ original great watch manufacturers. The “First Edition” of the Journeyman Series will be a small batch, limited run of 100 pieces.

Timepieces from the Journeyman Series will be powered by Pinion Precision Technology’s new manual winding calibre 1003 manufactured under the leadership of master watchmaker Cameron Weiss. Every component of the movement is made in the United States apart from the jewels and hairspring that are made in Switzerland. Inspired by American RailRoad watches from the early 20th century, these timepieces will have grand feu enamel dials created using traditional techniques. Measuring 43mm diameter, the 3D printed Titanium case of Journeyman Series wristwatch will have milled stainless steel screws on back and exhibition caseback.
