SEIKO Prospex “Seigaiha” U.S. Special Editions (references SLA053 and SLA059)

Seiko Watch of America has recently announced two amazing U.S. special edition Prospex professional diving watches with eye-catching dials highlighting the ancient “Seigaiha” pattern.

Exclusively available in the U.S. market, these diving watches from the Prospex collection combine the finest dive watch technology with centuries of tradition and craftsmanship.

Seigaiha is an ancient Japanese decorative motif in which layered concentric circles form an arched wave pattern. The two new watches, with their Seigaiha-patterned dials in vivid blue (SLA053) or deep burgundy (SLA059), add another rich element of symbolism in evoking the role of the moon in both the Shinto and Zen Buddhist traditions. The blue represents the ocean waves under moonlight and the burgundy, the first rays of sun brightening the dark seas at dawn.

Seiko Prospex Seigaiha U.S. Limited Edition, reference SLA053
Seiko Prospex Seigaiha U.S. Limited Edition, reference SLA053

These watches house Seiko’s proprietary 8L35 movement. The 26-jewel automatic 8L35, beating at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour, provides a power reserve of approximately 50 hours and boasts manual winding capability.

Each Seigaiha U.S. Special Edition is crafted to perform flawlessly in the roughest seas. The monobloc stainless steel case ensures water resistance to a depth of 300 meters, following ISO standards for saturation diving. The black ceramic unidirectional elapsed timing bezels and screw-down crowns provide added security on deep dives, while LumiBrite coated hands, markers, bezel accents, and anti-reflective sapphire crystals enhance legibility.

The blue dial version, with black hard-coated case and black silicone strap, will be available only in a controlled-production run of 500, with the serial number engraved on each caseback, while the burgundy dial variation features a super-hard coated stainless steel bracelet with tri-fold push-button release clasp and slide adjuster, as well as an additional black silicone strap.

Both timepieces will be packaged in special collectors’ boxes, including a unique explanatory scroll and the unique gift of coordinating Seigaiha-pattern cufflinks.

The Seiko Prospex “Seigaiha” Limited Edition SLA053 ($3,200, limited edition of 500) is available from August 2021, with Special Edition SLA059 ($3,300) following in November 2021, both exclusively in the U.S. market.

Seiko Prospex Speedtimer Series

Seiko’s new Prospex Speedtimer Series combines the Japanese watchmaking giant’s heritage in sports timing and its leadership in chronograph technology. The collection is comprised of six models: Two automatic chronographs and four solar chronographs.

In the 1960’s, Seiko forayed into the international sports timing stage with a whole new generation of high-precision timing devices. Many international sports federations endorsed these instruments for leading sports events.

An essential factor for this success was a range of stopwatches that incorporated Seiko’s innovative “heart-shaped cam” mechanism, which provided an unparallel level of precision. Then, in 1969, Seiko introduced the Seiko Speedtimer with the innovative Caliber 6139. It was the world’s first automatic chronograph with a column wheel and vertical clutch.

Among the two automatic models, one is a limited edition watch. Featuring a white dial, the limited edition chronograph evokes the 1/5th second stopwatch from 1964. The numerals at each ten-second mark and the markings stand out prominently against the plain white dial and guarantee the same high level of legibility.

The chronograph second hand is gently curved down towards the dial so that the tip of the hand is as close as possible to the dial’s markers and extends to the tachymeter markings at the very edge of the dial, thus ensuring that elapsed time can be read accurately at a glance. The large concave pushers ensure the high operability for which the original stopwatch was renowned.

The Seiko Prospex Speedtimer Mechanical Chronograph Limited Edition SRQ035 is equipped with Caliber 8R46, a brand new automatic chronograph movement. It shares the same performance attributes as Caliber 8R48 but incorporates two sub-dials instead of three and has a date window at the six o’clock position.

The vertical clutch and column wheel ensure the precision and durability which are the hallmarks of the 8R Caliber series. The escapement is lightweight and strong, thanks to the use of MEMS technology which enhances the stability of the watch’s precision. With the push of the reset button, the hands return back to zero instantly and in perfect synchronization.

The watch is presented on a stainless steel bracelet that is specially designed and constructed for the series. Its thickness, weight and low center of gravity ensure stability and a high level of comfort on the wrist. If the wearer chooses, the bracelet can be replaced with the black leather strap that is also included and whose stitching is designed to increase the durability of the strap.

In addition to the limited edition watch, a new creation with the same case and bracelet and also powered by Caliber 8R64 joins the main Prospex collection.

Its charcoal-gray dial evokes Seiko’s and Japan’s first chronograph wristwatch, the Crown Chronograph from 1964. Its beveled hour markers, sharp hour and minute hands with colored Lumibrite, chronograph pushers and the markers on the outer dial ring echo the design of the historic model.

The new series also includes four new Prospex solar chronographs powered by Caliber V192. The case shape is faithful to the original but its 39mm diameter, the combination of hairline and smooth polishing on the bracelet and the curved sapphire glass bring it right up to date.

These new solar chronographs are offered in four different dial colors; white, navy, gold and black. Their dials have a sandblast finish which ensures the high level of legibility that is a core characteristic of every Prospex watch.

All six watches in the new Speedtimer series will be available from November 2021 at the Seiko boutiques and selected retail partners worldwide.

Seiko 140th Anniversary Limited Editions: Prospex 1959 Alpinist Modern Re-interpretation (SPB259) and Presage SSA445

Celebrating its 140th anniversary, the Japanese Watchmaking Empire presents two new limited edition watches inspired by Ginza, the Tokyo district where the Seiko story began.

The Ginza district in central Tokyo was where the company’s founder, Kintaro Hattori, opened a shop selling and repairing clocks and watches in 1881. The company is still located here.

The two 140th anniversary limited editions introduced into the Prospex and Presage collections capture both the classic and modern faces of Ginza.

Both automatic timepieces have dial patterns that echo the district’s traditional cobblestone streets but are in a blue-gray tone that also evokes the contemporary feel of the many modern and architecturally interesting buildings which define Ginza today.

The Prospex limited edition is based on the modern re-interpretation of the 1959 Alpinist watch introduced earlier this year. The intricate pattern of the dial incorporates two different sunray patterns which, as the viewing angle changes, create ever-changing impressions that capture the texture and feel of Ginza’s cobblestones.

The seconds hand pays homage to the district’s history with Komparu, a traditional Japanese color named after Komparu Street. This blue color with a soft green tone was first used in the middle Meiji era (1868 – 1912), instantly found favor among the many geishas who lived there and then gradually became a popular color among the public.

The Prospex 140th anniversary limited edition watch is powered by Caliber 6R35, which delivers a power reserve of 70 hours. Fitted with a curved sapphire crystal glass, the watch is water resistant to 200 meters.

Limited to 3,500 pieces, this special series timepiece will be available in Seiko Boutiques and selected retail partners worldwide in October 2021.

The Presage creation features the same cobblestone-inspired dial pattern and Komparu color seconds hand, but the watch has the distinguished aspect of the recently released “Style60’s” design series inspired by the 1964 Seiko Crown Chronograph.

The box-shaped glass, sharp hands and faceted indexes are inherited directly from the Crown Chronograph and create a retro feel that matches perfectly with the classic dial pattern.

The opening at the 9 o’clock position affords the view of the beating of the escapement. The open-heart window is overlapped by a 24 hour sub-dial. The Presage SSA445 watch is offered as a limited edition of 4,000 and will also be available in Seiko Boutiques and selected retail partners worldwide in October 2021.

Seiko Prospex 1986 Quartz Diver’s 35th Anniversary Limited Edition

In 1986, Seiko launched a diver’s watch that set a new standard. It combined Seiko’s legendary 1975 design with the 1,000 meter water resistance required for saturation diving with a quartz movement that delivered an accuracy that no mechanical diver’s watch could match. At the time, and still today, it was recognized as one of Seiko’s most important diver’s watches. Today, 35 years on, this classic Seiko Diver’s watch is re-born with new design features and upgraded professional diver’s watch specifications.

Seiko Prospex 1986 Quartz Diver's 35th Anniversary Limited Edition

This new watch inherits all the important design features and innovations which made both the 1975 mechanical and the 1986 quartz original so greatly trusted by the professional diving community. It has the 1,000m water resistance and helium resistance that saturation diving requires and incorporates the unique one-piece titanium case with its outer protector structure that makes its shock resistance so exceptional.

It also has the accordion-style strap that ensures that the watch remains tight on the wrist at every depth. The outer protector is made of zirconia ceramic, which is seven times harder than steel, further enhancing its resistance to shock. The strap is now of high grade, strong yet flexible silicone.

Seiko Prospex 1986 Quartz Diver's 35th Anniversary Limited Edition

As a new safety and design feature, the crown is marked with a vivid yellow “Lock” sign and an arrow to indicate the rotating direction. The winding stem is also in yellow so that the wearer can immediately notice if the crown is unlocked. The white hour markers stand out against the dark dial so that they are easy to read at depth.

The watch is offered with extra-strength silicone straps in both black and blue-gray, ensuring wearability both on a wetsuit and directly on the wrist. Each strap features the text “FOR SATURATION DIVING 1000m” in yellow.

Seiko Prospex 1986 Quartz Diver's 35th Anniversary Limited Edition

The watch is equipped with Seiko’s tried and trusted quartz Caliber 7C46 which delivers a high level of torque so that it can move the powerful hands that are wide, robust and Lumibrite-coated for maximum legibility. It also delivers a reassuringly long battery life of 5 years.

This Prospex watch will be available in July 2021 as a limited edition of 1,200 at selected Seiko Boutiques and retail partners worldwide.

Seiko Presage Studio Ghibli Castle In The Sky Collaboration Limited Edition

Seiko has launched a new Presage timepiece by the now-classic fantasy-adventure Japanese animation film “Castle In The Sky.” This is the first animation feature from the world-renowned Japanese animation studio, Studio Ghibli, whose works have won the favor of animation fans worldwide for their imaginative, other-worldly settings, distinctive visuals and masterful storytelling.

Seiko Presage Studio Ghibli Castle In The Sky Collaboration Limited Edition

This new Seiko Presage watch captures many of the key elements of the animation in every corner of its design. The crest on the mystical levitation crystal of the heroine’s pendant is reproduced on the enamel dial, made by master craftsman Mitsuru Yokosawa and his colleagues, while the castle in the sky is illustrated on the caseback just the way it was in the picture taken by the protagonist’s father when he caught sight of the city.

Around the castle are engraved the words of the chant that is central to the story. The roman numerals, inner ring, retro hands and stitched leather strap complete the nostalgic atmosphere of this magical and evocative limited edition.

Seiko Presage Studio Ghibli Castle In The Sky Collaboration Limited Edition

The watch houses a new version of Seiko’s high-performance 6R35 movement, Caliber 6R31. Like Caliber 6R35, the movement delivers a power reserve of 70 hours and shares the same performance attributes, but without a date window.

The crystal glass is a dual-curved sapphire and is treated with anti-reflective coating on the inner surface that delivers high legibility from any angle. The exhibition case back reveals the fine finishing of the movement, and the watch is 10 bar water resistant.

The watch will be available as a limited edition of 1,200 at the Seiko Boutiques and selected retailers worldwide in July 2021.

The watch is offered in a special presentation box with an illustration of Laputa and carries a card message from the film’s director, Hayao Miyazaki.

Seiko Presage Studio Ghibli Castle In The Sky Collaboration Limited Edition

The key chant to the story, “Leetay Latuparita Ulus Aria Los Balu Netoreel“ or “save me and revive the eternal light” in the Laputan language, is inscribed on the caseback.

Seiko 140th anniversary Collection: Prospex (SPB213), Presage Sharp Edged Series (SPB223), Astron GPS Solar (SSH093), and Seiko 5 Sports (SRPG47) Limited Editions

Celebrating its 140th anniversary, Seiko has created four limited edition watch models respectively from its Prospex, Astron, Presage and 5 Sports collections.

Seiko 140th anniversary Collection: Prospex (SPB213), Presage Sharp Edged Series (SPB223), Astron GPS Solar (SSH093), and Seiko 5 Sports (SRPG47) Limited Editions
Seiko 140th anniversary Collection: Prospex (SPB213), Presage Sharp Edged Series (SPB223), Astron GPS Solar (SSH093), and Seiko 5 Sports (SRPG47)

The reference SPB213 from the Prospex collection is a modern re-interpretation of Seiko’s first ever diver’s watch from 1965. The wide hands and generously applied Lumibrite deliver high visibility while the screw-down crown and caseback ensure 200 meter water resistance. The watch case and back are shaped to sit easily on the wrist. This Seiko 140th anniversary Prospex watch model is available in a limited edition of 6,000 pieces.

The reference SPB223 from the Presage Sharp Edged Series case and bracelet incorporate flat surfaces with sharp angles. The case has a super-hard coating that protects the case and bracelet from scratches but also preserves its brilliance. The dial has an Asanoha or hemp leaf pattern that has been used for a thousand years and more in Japanese fabrics and architecture. The rich texture of the dial’s geometric pattern creates an infinite variety of shades at different angles as the light moves across it. This Seiko 140th anniversary Presage Sharp Edged Series watch is powered by the automatic GMT caliber 6R64. This timepiece is available in a limited edition of 3,500 pieces.

The case of the Astron GPS Solar reference SSH093 has the same curved silhouette and the same wide case lugs as the Quartz Astron watch of 1969 that remains one of Seiko’s most celebrated technological achievements. The design is brought right up to date with the GPS Solar Dual-Time 5X53 Caliber that adjusts to the exact time anywhere in the world, using just the power of light and offers several advanced features including high-speed time zone adjustment and a ‘Time Transfer’ function. The dial is a clean light silver color with blue accents, and the bezel is in blue ceramic. This Seiko 140th anniversary Astron GPS Solar watch is available in a limited edition of 1,400 pieces.

The reference SRPG47 features a white dial, for the very first time for Seiko 5 Sports line. Fitted with a blue bezel, this stainless steel watch houses Seiko’s trusted automatic 4R36 caliber. This 140th anniversary Seiko 5 Sports timepiece is available in a limited edition of 11,000 pieces.

All four watches will be available at the Seiko Boutiques and selected retailers worldwide in May 2021.

Seiko Prospex The Naomi Uemura 80th Anniversary Limited Edition

Japanese watchmaker Seiko presents the Naomi Uemura 80th Anniversary Limited Edition watch, a re-interpretation of the Seiko 1970 diver’s watch worn by the Japanese adventurer, Naomi Uemura, in the years 1974 to 1976 when he completed a 12,500km solo dog-sled run from Greenland to Alaska.

This 1970 diver’s watch had a flowing case design with an asymmetrical extension that protected the crown at the four o’clock position. With its solid construction, 150 meter water resistance, luminous hands and indexes, it was perfect for those who required a timepiece with exceptional strength and visibility.

2021 marks the 80th anniversary of Naomi Uemura’s birth. To mark this event, Seiko created a modern re-interpretation of this much-respected diver’s watch commemorates the adventurer’s life and his exceptional achievements.

Seiko Prospex The Naomi Uemura 80th Anniversary Limited Edition: SLA049

This commemorative watch echoes the design of the 1970 original but is thoroughly modern in execution. The patterned dial evokes the mountainous terrain that Uemura so loved, and the dial and bezel are in the blue tones of the earth’s upper atmospheric layers. Uemura was the first person in the world to reach the summits of the highest mountains on all five continents.

Seiko Prospex The Naomi Uemura 80th Anniversary Limited Edition: SLA049

The case sides are carefully polished and the watch is presented on a five row steel bracelet to create a modern sharp profile. Thanks to the positioning of the calendar between four and five o’clock, all twelve hour markers have a generous coating of Lumibrite, as do the hands, to maximise legibility in the dark.

The curved extension of the case fully protects the screw-down crown. This Uemura inspired timepiece is powered by Caliber 8L35, which was designed especially for diver’s watches by the watchmakers at the Shizukuishi Watch Studio in northern Japan. The case has a super-hard coating to protect the watch from scratches and the crystal is a dual curved sapphire with anti-reflective coating on the inner surface to ensure high legibility from every angle.

Seiko Prospex The Naomi Uemura 80th Anniversary Limited Edition: SLA049

The watch has enhanced water resistance to 200 meters. An alternative silicone strap that has the same train track pattern as the original is also offered. The case back is engraved with Uemura’s name and carries the individual watch’s serial number.

Seiko Prospex The Naomi Uemura 80th Anniversary Limited Edition: SLA049

This watch will be available as a limited edition of 1,200 at the Seiko Boutiques and selected retailers worldwide in July 2021.

In addition to the limited edition that commemorates the 80th anniversary of Naomi Uemura’s birth, a gray dialed version joins the Prospex collection. The watch shares the same textured pattern dial as the limited edition but is in a charcoal gray color that is similar to the 1970 original.

Seiko Prospex The 1970’s Diver’s Modern Re-interpretation: SLA051

It shares the same case design, features and specifications as the commemorative watch and will also be available at the Seiko Boutiques and selected retail partners worldwide in July 2021.

Seiko Astron GPS Solar KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS Limited Edition

Seiko has partnered with KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS to create an Astron GPS Solar watch that fuses the functionality of the state-of-the art Dual-Time 5X53 Caliber with a design inspired by their signature icon Ludens.

KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS is a creative studio led by game creator Hideo Kojima established in Tokyo, Japan in December 2015 under the slogan FROM SAPIENS TO LUDENS. The studio’s first game “DEATH STRANDING”, which featured world-renowned actors, was released on November 8th, 2019 for PlayStation®, and the PC version followed on July 14th, 2020. The title has received accolades from around the world and won numerous awards since its release.

Seiko Astron GPS Solar KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS Limited Edition

The Seiko Astron GPS Solar KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS Limited Edition watch’s design incorporates several design elements inspired by Ludens’ suit and the interwoven pattern on the dial reflects the texture of his carbon face mask motif. Gold color accents echo the metal parts of the suit, including the interlocking design of the two sub-dials.

Seiko Astron GPS Solar KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS Limited Edition

The iconic studio logo is printed both at the 9 o’clock position and on the case back. On the bezel, the UTC codes are in the same font as KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS’ logo and the studio’s signature FROM SAPIENS TO LUDENS is discreetly engraved on the bezel side at the 6 o’clock position.

The interlocking sub-dials are inspired by the hinges of Ludens’ suit. The cut-outs in the hour and minute hands echo its flag spear’s design. The watch is presented in a special box which includes a message card from Hideo Kojima himself and the art director of the company.

The watch connects up to twice a day to the GPS network to maintain its precision, it adjusts automatically to Daylight Saving Time and, when the wearer changes time zone, he or she simply pushes a button and the hands move to the correct local time, thanks to the system that moves the hour, minute, and seconds hands independently. Caliber 5X even gives the wearer the ability to change the main time display instantly from home to local time and vice versa.

Seiko Astron GPS Solar KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS Limited Edition

The watch is offered as a limited edition of 1,000 and will be available at selected Seiko Boutiques and retailers in June 2021.

Seiko Presage Sharp Edged Series GMT

Introduced in 2020, the Seiko Presage Sharp Edged Series captured the simplicity and refinement of traditional Japanese aesthetics in its delicately textured dial and gave it a modern edge with its sharp and angular case construction. This year, the brand expands this series by adding four new models endowed with GMT function.

These timepieces feature crisp profile, strong lines and angular surfaces. The bracelet has been re-designed to create a multi-dimensional sharp feel that matches the dynamism of the case, and the lugs end with an angled cut to emphasize the modernity of the design. The precisely engineered and polished surfaces and the crisp edges of the case’s silhouette contrast with the hairline finish for a pleasingly multi-dimensional effect. The sharp angles of the hands and indexes enhance the legibility of the dial.

Seiko Presage Sharp Edged Series GMT

The indexes are crafted to allow the light to play across the dial as they have two different finishes, textured on the top and polished on the sides. Even the GMT hand has a sharp and powerful design to match the angularity of the case. All four watches have a super-hard coating that protects both case and bracelet from scratches and endows it with a long-lasting brilliance.

Seiko Presage Sharp Edged Series GMT

The new creations all feature dials with the delicate Asanoha, or hemp leaf, pattern that has been used in Japanese fabrics and elsewhere ever since the Heian period over a thousand years ago. The dials’ sharply edged geometric pattern and rich texture present an ever-changing aspect as the light plays across them at different angles. Each dial is in a different traditional Japanese color; Aitetsu, or indigo iron, Tokiwa, the color of evergreen trees, Sumi-iro, the tone of black Japanese ink, and Hihada-iro, a reddish-brown color first derived from the bark of the Japanese cypress tree.

Seiko Presage Sharp Edged Series GMT

All four watches are powered by the Automatic Caliber 6R64. The GMT hand on each is in a different color to stand out clearly from each dial and, like the hands and indexes, has a generous layer of Lumibrite, to ensure legibility. The GMT hand can also be used as a dual time indicator, with the hour hand being adjustable even as the minute and seconds hands continue to mark time.

The dial rings are in two colors to separate the night and day hours at a glance. The date is shown on a sub-dial at the six o’clock position and there is a power reserve indicator at nine o’clock. The glass is sapphire crystal and the exhibition case back, also in sapphire, reveals the beauty of the movement.

All four watches will be available at the Seiko Boutiques and selected retail stores worldwide in May 2021.

Seiko Prospex The 1959 Alpinist Re-creation Limited Edition

Introduced in 1959, the Seiko Laurel Alpinist watch marked the Japanese watch company’s entry into the sports watch category. Since then, the Alpinist watch has been highly sought after by mountain climbers, recreational/field sports enthusiasts and watch collectors.

The original 1959 Alpinist watch had a screw-back case to prevent dust or sand particles from entering the case. It had a sturdy leather cuff band to protect the watch from perspiration. The indexes and the hour and minute hands all had luminous inserts ensuring high legibility in the dark, and the name Alpinist was evoked in the mountain-shaped markers at the three, six, nine, and twelve o’clock positions.

These four clearly differentiated markers represented the four main points on a compass and, with the specially designed marker at twelve o’clock, allowed the time to be read safely and correctly at any angle. This was a feature that became central to the design of many subsequent Seiko sports watches and remains so still today.

This year, Seiko is introducing a recreation of the legendary Alpinist watch. Belongs to the Prospex collection, the recreation brings the 1959 Alpinist back to life in every detail. The generously sized markers are, as before, set against a black gloss dial. White minute markers form an inner ring on the dial base, just as on the original.

The indexes and the hour and minute hands are coated with Lumibrite for legibility in the dark. The glass is a box-shaped sapphire crystal that re-creates the gentle feel of the original watch’s characteristic domed glass. The watch is presented on a leather strap that has the same jagged stitch design as its predecessor.

Seiko Prospex The 1959 Alpinist Re-creation, Reference SJE085

While the re-creation is faithful to the original design, it has been brought right up to date in technology and has the high specifications and functionality for which Prospex is renowned. It now incorporates a date window between four and five o’clock and is water resistant to 10 bar.

The box-shaped sapphire crystal is treated with an anti-reflective coating on the inner surface, delivering high legibility. The watch is powered by the slimline Caliber 6L35 which has a power reserve of 45 hours. Despite the addition of a date and the enhanced performance, the case is just 1.0mm thicker.

The re-creation will be available as a limited edition of 1,959 at the Seiko Boutiques and selected retail partners worldwide in August 2021.

Three Modern Re-Interpretations

In addition to the limited edition, three other new watches pay homage to the 1959 Alpinist. They are inspired by the original watch’s distinctive design but are modern in their execution and, of course, up to date in technology, form and function. Lumibrite is applied to all three hands and the indexes that rest on silver bases to create a multi-dimensional effect. The cases are polished to creating a modern look, especially when combined with the gently rounded contour of the dial and case.

Seiko Prospex The 1959 Alpinist Modern Re-interpretation

All three watches are powered by Caliber 6R35 which delivers a power reserve of 70 hours. The glass is a curved sapphire crystal that is resistant to scratches and the watches are all water resistant to 20 bar. Two watches are offered on stainless steel bracelets while the green dial version comes with a leather strap.

Belong to the Prospex collection, these watches will be available at the Seiko Boutiques and selected retail partners worldwide in August 2021.

Seiko 140th Anniversary Collection: Series of Prospex, Presage and Astron watches inspired by the landscapes, seascapes and cityscapes of Japan

When Kintaro Hattori founded his company in 1881, he was just 21 years old. During his fifty years at the helm, Seiko became the leading watch company in Japan, with its own design and production facilities. In 2021, the brand is celebrating its 140th anniversary. Throughout this year, Seiko will release a series of creations that embody the spirit of Kintaro’s words and honor the 140th anniversary of the founding of his company.

The celebrations start with a series of Prospex, Presage and Astron watches inspired by the landscapes, seascapes and cityscapes of Japan.

Seiko Prospex diver’s watches inspired by the island of Iriomote (SPB207, SLA047 and SSC807)

The island of Iriomote in Okinawa Prefecture attracts divers from all over Japan and elsewhere. Its abundant coral reefs teem with marine life but the island’s special charm lies in the primeval and pristine mangrove forests that surround it. Further, Iriomote is home to several species of flora and fauna that are rare and, in some instances, unique to the island. With its reefs, jungle, mangrove forests, beaches, rivers and waterfalls, Iriomote is an island of rich and varied beauty whose verdant nature is reflected in the deep green of the dials in this new series of timepieces.

Seiko Prospex diver’s watches inspired by the island of Iriomote (SPB207, SLA047 and SSC807)

The two mechanical watches in this Iriomote-inspired series are based on Seiko’s celebrated 1968 diver’s. One is a 300 meter water resistant, eight beat diver’s watch with a unique onepiece case structure. Suitable for saturation as well as air diving, it is made, assembled and adjusted by the skilled craftsmen and women of Shizukuishi and powered by Caliber 8L35, which was created especially for diver’s watches. The second mechanical watch is a contemporary reinvention of the 1968 original. It houses a six beat caliber and is 200 meter water resistant.

Both are offered as limited editions, of 3,000 and 6,000 respectively. The third watch in the series is a 200m solar chronograph. It, too, is a limited edition of 4,000. All three are presented on stainless steel bracelets but are also accompanied by an extra silicone strap. All three watches will be available in March at Seiko Boutiques and selected Seiko retailers worldwide.

Seiko Presage Sharp Edged Series automatic watch, Reference SPB205: Inspired by the Tokyo dawn

Created in 2020, the Presage Sharp Edged Series combines flat surfaces with sharp angles that, together, allow the watch to sparkle wherever the light strikes. Like others in this series, this new creation has an Asanoha or hemp leaf pattern that has been used for a thousand years and more in Japanese fabrics.

Seiko Presage Sharp Edged Series automatic watch, Reference SPB205: Inspired by the Tokyo dawn

The gold color accents of the indexes and hands are set onto a black dial so as to be reminiscent of the sunlight that illuminates Tokyo in the early dawn. Whether on the stainless steel bracelet or the alternative black leather strap that is also included, this automatic Presage timepiece offers a very different, modern perspective on Japanese aesthetics. It is a limited edition of 4,000 and will be available in February at Seiko Boutiques and selected Seiko retailers worldwide.

Seiko Astron GPS Solar Dual-Time 5X53, Reference SSH083: Inspired by the beauty of cherry blossom by night

The Japanese enchantment with cherry blossom extends far beyond the daylight hours. Yozakura is the name given to these ephemeral but beautiful flowers when, seen under a star-lit sky, they give an ethereal and magical glow to the space around them. With a black case and bracelet acting as the night sky, the purple dial with its pink hue captures the beauty of Yozakura. This subtly colored dial becomes darker towards the six o’clock position, adding a mysterious depth and enhancing the illusion that it is a gentle spring evening in Japan.

Seiko Astron GPS Solar Dual-Time 5X53, Reference SSH083: Inspired by the beauty of cherry blossom by night

The case has the same curved silhouette and the same wide case lugs as the 1969 Quartz Astron and houses the latest and most advanced GPS Solar Dual-Time Caliber 5X53 which adjusts to the exact time anywhere in the world, using just the power of light and offers both high speed time zone adjustment and time transfer functions.

This unique Astron watch will be available as a limited edition of 1,500 at Seiko Boutiques and selected Seiko retailers worldwide in February 2021.

Seiko 140th Anniversary Limited Edition – Re-creation of King Seiko KSK (SJE083)

To mark its 140th anniversary in 2021, Seiko Watch Corporation created a re-creation of the iconic King Seiko KSK watch.

Introduced in 1965, the King Seiko KSK was the second series of the legendary King Seiko watch. With a distinctive, angular profile, this manual wound watch featured a different design compared to the gentle rounded contours of the first King Seiko creation. Its flat surfaces and multi-faceted corners caught the light from any angle and gave the watch a new and striking brilliance. With its water resistance and hacking seconds hand, it offered a high level of practicality which.

The new re-creation boasts all the distinct design features of the 1965 KSK watch. The combination of the flat dial with the faceted indexes and broad, sharp hands re-creates the refined elegance of the original. The sharp, bold faceted lugs feature large flat planes and razor sharp angles and are Zaratsu polished to a distortion-free mirror finish.

Just as on the first KSK, the index at twelve o’clock has a bright sparkle thanks to the way it is intricately faceted. The case back carries the King Seiko name and the same shield design as the original and the buckle, too, is an accurate reproduction. The Seiko name and a “W” mark that signifies the KSK’s water-resistance appear on the crown.

While the re-creation is faithful in every aspect to the original design, it is completely up-to date in technology, function and form. Even with an automatic movement and the addition of a date window, the new watch retains its slim profile and is just 0.5mm thicker than the original, thanks to the thinness of Caliber 6L35.

The case is slightly wider than the original at 38.1mm and the crystal is a boxed-shaped sapphire with an anti-reflective coating in the inner surface that delivers high legibility from any angle. The case’s durability is also enhanced by the super-hard coating which protects the watch from scratches.

The King Seiko KSK re-creation will be available from January 2021 as a limited edition of 3,000 at Seiko boutiques and at selected retail partners worldwide.

Seiko Astron GPS Solar Kintaro Hattori 160th Anniversary Limited Edition

Seiko has created a special edition Astron GPS Solar watch to mark the 160th birth anniversary of Kintaro Hattori, the visionary founder of Seiko.

Seiko’s founder Kintaro Hattori was born in 1860 in central Tokyo, Japan. At the age of just 17, he set up his own timepiece repair business at his home and, just four years later, he founded his own company K. Hattori for repairing, importing and selling clocks and watches. In 1892, Hattori established the Seikosha Factory.

Under his leadership, his small venture grew to be Japan’s pre-eminent timepiece manufacturer. In 2020, Seiko is celebrating the life, career and achievements of its founder with a limited edition watch that exemplifies to perfection Kintaro’s vision that Seiko should always be “One step ahead of the rest”. Seiko has selected its most advanced watch collection, the Astron GPS Solar, to create this special edition watch.

Seiko Astron GPS Solar Kintaro Hattori 160th Anniversary Limited Edition

The watch case and bracelet are in titanium with a scratch-resistant hard-coating. The bezel is made from Zirconia ceramic and has sixteen facets, one for each decade since Kintaro’s birth.

The case back carries Kintaro’s name and three reminders of his legacy. The trademark “S” that he registered in 1900 occupies the center of the case back. His motto “One step ahead of the rest” appears above it and the name Seiko which was first used in 1924 takes pride of place on the rim. Kintaro’s name, the ‘S’ mark and his motto share the case back with each watch’s individual serial number.

Seiko Astron GPS Solar Kintaro Hattori 160th Anniversary Limited Edition

The watch is offered in a special presentation box with a commemorative “S” mark badge and includes a card carrying a message from Kintaro’s great-grandson and the company’s current Chairman & CEO, Shinji Hattori.

The Kintaro Hattori 160th Anniversary watch be available in the month of Kintaro’s birth, October, at Seiko Boutiques and at selected retail partners worldwide.

Seiko 5 Sports NARUTO & BORUTO Limited Edition

Seiko presents seven new Seiko 5 Sports creations inspired by two leading Japanese animations, NARUTO and BORUTO.

NARUTO was first broadcasted in Japan in 2002 and then introduced abroad, and has since fascinated fans throughout the world. BORUTO is the sequel to the series and centers on Naruto’s son, Boruto Uzumaki, whose adventure continues today.

Seiko 5 Sports NARUTO & BORUTO Limited Edition watch collection

Each of the seven special edition Seiko 5 Sports models captures both animations’ central characters: Naruto, Sasuke, Shikamaru, Lee, Gaara from NARUTO, and Boruto and Sarada from BORUTO. The series will be available worldwide at Seiko Boutiques and selected retailing partners in December as limited editions of 6,500 each.

Seiko 5 Sports Naruto Uzumaki (Ref. SRPF70)

Seiko 5 Sports Naruto Uzumaki (Ref. SRPF70) limited edition watch
Seiko 5 Sports Naruto Uzumaki (Ref. SRPF70)

This watch’s design evokes Naruto’s iconic Ninja outfit, and the worn-like bezel and case reflect the tough training required to become a Hokage, a title bestowed on the leader of the Hidden Leaf Village where Naruto belongs. The bezel ring plate is designed after his forehead protector which is engraved with the symbol of his village.

His iconic Jutsu (Ninja technique) “Rasengan” inspires the spiral pattern of the dial. The nine orange indexes hint at the Nine-Tails sealed in himself while the 12 o’clock position index represents the pendant he inherited from Tsunade, a senior Hokage of his village. The Uzumaki Clan’s Kamon, or Japanese emblem used to decorate and identify an individual, family, or institution, is printed on the case back.

Seiko 5 Sports Sasuke Uchiha (Ref. SRPF69)

Seiko 5 Sports Sasuke Uchiha (Ref. SRPF69) limited edition watch
Seiko 5 Sports Sasuke Uchiha (Ref. SRPF69)

Naruto’s friend and rival, Sasuke is captured in every detail of this blue dialed watch. His trademark Jutsu “Chidori” is reflected in the dial pattern, in which the Jutsu’s hand sign is discretely highlighted on the one, three and eight o’ clock positions.

The horizontal line on the Hidden Leaf Village symbol on the bezel represents the scar marked on his forehead protector by Naruto, and the watch crown is engraved the Clan’s unique “Sharingan” sign. On the case back is printed the Uchiha Clan’s Kamon.

Seiko 5 Sports Shikamaru Nara (Ref. SRPF75)

Seiko 5 Sports Shikamaru Nara (Ref. SRPF75) limited edition watch
Seiko 5 Sports Shikamaru Nara (Ref. SRPF75)

Shikamaru’s “Shadow Possession Jutsu” is perfectly reflected in the dial of this watch. The Black color scheme with green accents and the mesh-like dial ring are consistent with the character’s attire. The indexes are designed in the shape of his favorite Shogi game pieces, and the case back carries the Nara Clan’s Kamon.

Seiko 5 Sports Rock Lee (Ref. SRPF73)

Seiko 5 Sports Rock Lee (Ref. SRPF73) limited edition watch
Seiko 5 Sports Rock Lee (Ref. SRPF73)

The color combination is reminiscent of Lee’s trademark jumpsuit and leg warmers. The bezel reflects on one side the bandages of his arms and thigh, and on the other, the “The Eight Inner Gates,” of which Lee had managed to open up to the fifth gate to obtain the extraordinary “Hidden Lotus”. On the case back are the kanji characters meaning “Guts” as found on his heavy ankle weights.

Seiko 5 Sports Gaara (Ref. SRPF71)

Seiko 5 Sports Gaara (Ref. SRPF71) limited edition watch
Seiko 5 Sports Gaara (Ref. SRPF71)

The brown case and the pressed pattern of the dial are inspired by sand, and the kanji character for “love” at the one o’clock position brings Gaara and the One-Tailed sealed inside him to life. The pattern inspired by the mark on his gourd is seen on both the dial ring and case back.

Seiko 5 Sports Boruto Uzumaki (Ref. SRPF65)

Seiko 5 Sports Boruto Uzumaki (Ref. SRPF65) limited edition watch
Seiko 5 Sports Boruto Uzumaki (Ref. SRPF65)

Inheriting his father Naruto’s Jutsu “Rasengan”, the dial has the same spiral pattern in black. The color of his costume is reflected in the vivid pink color accents on the strap and seconds hand. The 12 o’clock index is inspired by a bolt as seen in the animation’s logo. The Uzumaki Clan’s Kamon is printed on the case back.

Seiko 5 Sports Sarada Uchiha (Ref. SRPF67)

Seiko 5 Sports Sarada Uchiha (Ref. SRPF67) limited edition watch
Seiko 5 Sports Sarada Uchiha (Ref. SRPF67)

The “Fire Style: Fire Ball Jutsu” Sarada inherited from her father Sasuke, is expressed in the red gradation dial. The single Tomoe mark on the 5 o’clock position indicates she is still a young Ninja in training in pursuit of improving her “Sharingan”. The two-tone bezel is symbolic of how she has inherited both her father Sasuke and her mother Sakura’s characteristics as a Ninja. The Uchiha Clan’s Kamon is printed on both the bezel and the case back.

The movement powering these special edition timepieces is the tried and trusted automatic Caliber 4R36, with 24 jewels, optional manual-winding, a 41 hour power reserve and a hacking second hand.

All Seiko 5 Sports Naruto & Boruto Limited Edition watches are water resistant to 10 bar and have see-through case backs. Each watch will come with a box inspired by the Earth and Heaven Scrolls from the Chunin Exams, a widescale examination used to test the skill of junior Ninja.

Seiko Presage Sharp Edged Series

Inspired by some of the beautiful Japanese decorative patterns, Seiko has created a new series of watches within its Presage collection. Featuring textured dials highlighted with Japanese Asanoha or hemp leaf pattern, these new timepieces proudly carry a powerful and fresh expression of Japanese artistry.

These timepieces feature traditional, high quality round cases made from stainless steel. On closer inspection, you will discover the real beauty of the watch thanks to its sharply angled case structure and the delicate design of the textured dial.

Seiko Presage Sharp Edged Series

The case and bracelet of these watches incorporate a unique design featuring many precise and polished flat surfaces. The sharpness of this design allows the watch to shine and sparkle from every angle. Three of the four watches in the new series have a super-hard coating that protects the case and bracelet from scratches and also endows it with a long-lasting brilliance.

The dial incorporates a Japanese Asanoha or hemp leaf pattern, familiar in Japanese culture for its use in design since the Heian period over a thousand years ago. The rich texture and intricacy of the dial’s sharply edged geometric pattern create a subtle color gradation as they play with the light at different angles.

Seiko Presage Sharp Edged Series 2

The series comprises four new watches, each offering a dial with a different traditional Japanese color; Shironeri, an unbleached silky white, Aitetsu, or indigo iron, Tokiwa, the color of evergreen trees and Susutake, a brown-toned smoked bamboo. The watches are all powered by the 24 jewel Caliber 6R35 which delivers a power reserve of 70 hours. The glass material is sapphire crystal, and the exhibition case back, also in sapphire, reveals the delicate finishing of the movement.

All four watches from the Seiko Presage Sharp Edged Series are available from September 2020 at Seiko Boutiques and selected retail stores worldwide.

Seiko 5 Sports STREET FIGHTER V Limited Edition

Seiko expands its popular Seiko 5 Sports by introducing STREET FIGHTER V, inspired by the latest edition of the world-famous Player VS Player fighting game, STREET FIGHTER.

Originally introduced in 1968, the Seiko 5 Sports is an affordable mechanical watch collection with sporty characteristics. Last year, Seiko re-imagined this collection by presenting new generation timepieces with more contemporary flavor. In 2020, the Japanese watchmaker is releasing six new Seiko 5 Sports timepieces inspired by the characters (Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li, Guile, Zangief and Blanka) of STREET FIGHTER game.

Seiko 5 Sports STREET FIGHTER V RYU (SRPF19)

Seiko 5 Sports STREET FIGHTER V RYU (SRPF19)

The watch’s design is inspired by his classic “do-gi” Judo uniform, and the scratch-like marks across the bezel reflect the tough training required of Ryu to become a “true fighter”. At the 9 o’clock position is a simplified version of the iconic “Furinkazan” kanji characteristics on his gloves, which signify “as swift as the wind, as gentle as forest, as fierce as fire and as unshakable as the mountain.” These four characters are also printed on the back of the strap while the controller command for his special move, “Hadoken” is discreetly printed on the case back.

Seiko 5 Sports STREET FIGHTER V KEN (SRPF20)

Seiko 5 Sports STREET FIGHTER V KEN (SRPF20)

Ken’s costume and blond hair are captured in the watch’s red and yellow color scheme, and his costume design is also reflected in the dial. At the reverse side of the strap end is the logo of his company, the Masters Foundation, showing another side to his identity. The command for one of the most known moves of the game, “Shoryuken” is printed on the case back.

Seiko 5 Sports STREET FIGHTER V CHUN-LI (SRPF17)

Seiko 5 Sports STREET FIGHTER V CHUN-LI (SRPF17)

The combination of blue and gold brings to life Chun-Li’s China dress. The same design on her dress collar is at 12 o’clock, and her spike bracelet inspires the indexes at six and nine o’clock. The beautiful dragon pattern on her waist belt is printed on the strap back, and her special move “Spinning Bird Kick” command is printed on the case back.

Seiko 5 Sports STREET FIGHTER V GUILE (SRPF21)

Seiko 5 Sports STREET FIGHTER V GUILE (SRPF21)

Guile’s uniform as Major of the US Air Force inspires the military camouflage-patterned dial and patch at the 6 o’clock position. At 9 o’clock is the “dog tag” of his best friend Charlie Nash that he keeps with him to cheer him up and stay sharp during fights. On the case back is printed the command for Guile’s special move, “Sonic boom”.

Seiko 5 Sports STREET FIGHTER V ZANGIEF (SRPF24)

Seiko 5 Sports STREET FIGHTER V ZANGIEF (SRPF24)

The dial’s design reflects the power of Zangief’s muscular body. The circular pressed pattern is reminiscent of his special move “Cyclone Lariat”. The large, bold Arabic figures and indexes, as well as the calendar display with a magnifying lens add impact to the watch. Its nylon strap is a perfect expression of Zangief’s wrist band. The case back carries the command of his move “Screw Pile Driver”.

Seiko 5 Sports STREET FIGHTER V BLANKA (SRPF23)

Seiko 5 Sports STREET FIGHTER V BLANKA (SRPF23)

The bezel’s electric discharge pattern captures one of Blanka’s special moves, “Electric Thunder”. The dial’s pressed spinning design is based on Blanka’s iconic rolling attacks, and the indexes are in the image of his sharp and powerful teeth. An affectionate “Blanka Chan” doll’s image is printed on the back of the nylon strap end. The case back is printed the command for his special move, “Electric Thunder”.

The STREET FIGHTER V timepieces are driven by Seiko’s automatic Caliber 4R36, with 24 jewels, optional manual-winding, a 41 hour power reserve and a hacking second hand. All timepieces are water resistant to 10 bar and have see-through case backs.

The STREET FIGHTER V series will be available worldwide at Seiko Boutiques and selected retailing partners in September as limited editions of 9,999 each.

Seiko Presage Arita Porcelain Dial Limited Edition Inspired by Suigetsu

After the success of their Presage Arita porcelain dial models launched in 2019, Seiko now presents new limited edition Presage Arita porcelain dial version inspired by the beauty of the moon reflected in water.

This new Presage automatic watch features another Arita porcelain dial whose design is inspired by the Japanese tradition of Suigetsu, which celebrates the beauty of the moon when it is reflected in water. The strong blue hands and hour markers stand out against the delicate white texture of the dial to give the watch a unique beauty.

Seiko Presage Arita Porcelain Dial Limited Edition Inspired by Suigetsu

The dials are produced by master craftsman Hiroyuki Hashiguchi and his colleagues at an experienced manufacturer in Arita that has been making porcelain since 1830. To give the dials the strength required for a watch, the craftsmen use a type of Arita porcelain specially formulated to be harder and more durable than traditional porcelain. A very precise casting mold is used to achieve the difficult task of giving each dial the precise dimensions required to fit perfectly into a wristwatch.

While in traditional Arita porcelain a special glaze is applied to create its distinctive subtle blue sheen, a clear, transparent glaze is used for the dial of this new watch to allow the natural whiteness of the porcelain material to shine through. This pure white porcelain, called Hakuji, echoes the delicate reflection of the moon on water, and creates a sharp contrast with the blue of the hands, roman numerals and sub-dials. The combination of the blue color with the white Arita porcelain lends the watch a uniquely Japanese aesthetic that captures the transient yet memorable beauty of the time-honored tradition of Suigetsu.

Seiko Presage Arita Porcelain Dial Limited Edition Inspired by Suigetsu

This limited edition watch is equipped with the Caliber 6R27. It beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour and provides a power reserve up to 45 hours. This high performance movement can be admired through the exhibition case back.

The crystal is a dual-curved sapphire that delivers high legibility from any angle. The watch is 10 bar (100 meters) water resistant and is presented on a crocodile strap with a blue tone that echoes the color of lakes and ponds illuminated by moonlight. The sub-dial at six o’clock shows the date. At nine o’clock, you can observe the power reserve in hours.

This Presage Arita Porcelain Dial Limited Edition is available from June, 2020 at Seiko Boutiques and selected Seiko retail partners worldwide as a limited edition of 2,000.

The collection comprises six creations, each of which has a dial featuring a traditional Japanese color overlaid on a mother-of-pearl base with a flower motif and eight diamond hour markers. The models are SPB133 (Gofun), SPB135 (Kurenai), SPB137 (Ruri), SPB138 (Ao-shiro-tsurubami), SPB140 (Sakura) and limited edition SPB141 (Tsukishiro).

Each dial is colored from both sides, which allows the full richness of the color to blend harmoniously with the texture of the mother-of-pearl dial. The case offers a soft, delicate feeling on the wrist thanks to its perfectly rounded edges.

Five of the six new creations will be available from July 2020, with a limited edition to follow in September. All will be available in selected Seiko Boutiques.

The new Lukia series is powered by Seiko’s latest automatic caliber, 6R35, which delivers a power reserve of 70 hours. Seiko Presage Studio Ghibli Porco Rosso Collaboration Limited Editions

Introduced in 2016, Seiko Presage collection is known for its artistic beauty highlighting traditional Japanese craftsmanship in combination with Seiko’s watchmaking skills. The Presage collection’s creations highlight traditional Japanese handcrafts such as Shippo enamel and Arita porcelain.

In 2020, Presage is introducing two new watches that reveal a completely different and more contemporary form of Japanese artistry. These timepieces are inspired by the widely acclaimed feature-length film “Porco Rosso,” created by the famous Japanese animation studio, Studio Ghibli.

Seiko Presage Studio Ghibli Porco Rosso Collaboration Limited Editions
Seiko Presage Studio Ghibli Porco Rosso Collaboration Limited Editions

Studio Ghibli is popular among animation fans worldwide for their creative, other-worldly settings, distinctive visuals and masterful storytelling. One of these films is “Porco Rosso,” released in 1992. The film features an early 20th century pilot who transforms himself into a seaplane-flying pig, Porco, and makes his living chasing sky bandits over Italy and the beautiful Adriatic Sea. With its vivid animation, the film brings to life the romance of the early days of aviation.

The two watches capture the passion for mechanical engineering and technology that underpin the film and explore the interface between function and design that the film’s director, Hayao Miyazaki, describes through the affectionate way that he depicts Porco’s airplane, Savoia S-21. The watch with the white dial carries Seiko’s innovative Spring Drive movement while the black dial version houses an automatic chronograph.

Seiko Presage Studio Ghibli Porco Rosso Collaboration Limited Editions

The beauty and individuality of Porco’s fictitious 1920’s plane, Savoia S-21, are reflected in every detail of the watch. The dial takes its inspiration from the instrument panel of the plane with clear, bold hands and numerals as well as detailed and intricate markers. The white and black dials are made of enamel by master craftsman Mitsuru Yokosawa and his colleagues to create the warm beauty that echoes the feel and texture of the materials used in a 1920’s aircraft.

Seiko Presage Studio Ghibli Porco Rosso Collaboration Limited Editions

A specially created seconds hand for the black dialed watch reflects the plane’s propeller. The “R” emblem on the tail of Savoia S-21 is displayed at the six o’clock position of the Spring Drive watch and at three o’clock with the same coloring as the plane’s tail in the automatic chronograph. This coloring is also subtly integrated into the Spring Drive creation with its white dial, red seconds hand and green power reserve indicator.

Seiko Presage Studio Ghibli Porco Rosso Collaboration Limited Editions

The crown is specially engraved with the emblem of Porco Rosso and his plane’s name graces the case. The white dialed watch incorporates Spring Drive Caliber 5R65 which has an accuracy of +/–1 second per day and a power reserve of 72 hours. There is a power reserve indicator at the eight o’clock position and a date window at three o’clock.

Seiko Presage Studio Ghibli Porco Rosso Collaboration Limited Editions

The automatic chronograph is powered by Seiko’s most advanced chronograph caliber, 8R48, which measures elapsed time up to 12 hours and has a power reserve of 45 hours. In addition to a vertical clutch and a column wheel, it incorporates Seiko’s unique three-pointed hammer and a heart-shaped cam which ensure the perfect and instant synchronization of the hands when the chronograph is reset.

The beauty of the Spring Drive movement is clearly visible through the sapphire crystal case back, as is the Porco Rosso symbol. On the case back, you will discover an engraving, in Italian, a famous quote from the film, “A pig that does not fly is just a pig.”

Seiko Presage Studio Ghibli Porco Rosso Collaboration Limited Editions

The watches are offered in a special presentation box, each with an alternative strap and a leather cloth that is marked with the symbol of Porco. One strap is in the vibrant red color of the fuselage of Savoia S-21 with stitching in red, white and green, and the other is in black with the same colored stitching. The special box comes with an alternative strap and carries a message from the film’s director, Hayao Miyazaki.

Both watches are available in the Presage collection at Seiko boutiques and selected retailers worldwide from June 2020 as limited editions, 500 for the Spring Drive version and 600 for the automatic chronograph.

Seiko Diver’s Watch 55th Anniversary Limited Editions

In 1965, Seiko created its first ever diver’s watch. This highly reliable automatic dive watch was rated for a water resistance up to 150m. It is also the first ever dive watch made in Japan. It was used by members of the Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition from 1966 to 1969. In 2020, marking the 55th anniversary of this iconic creation, Seiko is introducing re-editions of three of the most important and historic divining watches from Seiko’s first decade as a maker of diver’s watches.

The Seiko Diver’s Watch 55th anniversary collection pays tribute to three legendary diver’s watches: 1968 Hi-beat Diver’s 300m, 1965 62MAS 150m, 1975 Professional Diver’s 600m. These re-editions are offered in the Prospex collection which is today synonymous with excellence in watches for use in all types of sports and challenging environments.

1968 Hi-beat Diver’s 300m, 1965 62MAS 150m, 1975 Professional Diver’s 600m
Inspiration: 1968 Hi-beat Diver’s 300m, 1965 62MAS 150m, 1975 Professional Diver’s 600m

Encouraged by the success of their first diver’s watch, Seiko’s engineers continued their development work to better meet the needs of the professional diver. In 1968, Seiko’s first diver’s watch with 300m water resistance and a 10-beat automatic movement was created. In 1975, Seiko produced a 600m diver’s watch featuring a titanium one-piece case and an outer case protector. It used a specially developed L-shaped gasket to make it impervious to helium without the need for an escape valve. It had an accordion-style strap that made the watch secure on the wrist whatever the ambient pressure. This unique watch changed forever the world’s expectation of what a diver’s watch could deliver and its unique construction and popularity led to it being given the name “Tuna” by watch fans across the world.

Seiko Diver’s Watch 55th Anniversary Limited Editions

While faithful to the original designs, all three watches are fully up to date in their specifications and execution. The greatest advance is in the grade of stainless steel used in the construction of the three watches. To be known as Seiko’s “Ever-Brilliant Steel,” thanks to the brilliant white hue that gives this trilogy of watches its unique look, this grade of steel is more corrosion resistant than that which is used in most high-end watches today. This stainless steel has a PREN (Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number) value 1.7 times higher than that of the grade of steel used in most high-end watches. PREN is a widely accepted standard used to measure corrosion resistance.

It is used for the first time in the watch industry for the cases of the 1965 and 1968 re-creations and the bezel of the 1975 re-creation whose case is, like the original, in titanium. This material is used extensively in the surfaces, linings, bolts and other components of marine structures and vessels so as to avoid corrosion in a chloride-rich environment such as sea water. It presents many challenges in the manufacture of watch cases but, thanks to the experience and innovative techniques of the Seiko team, these challenges were overcome and Ever-Brilliant Steel is now set to bring a new level of durability to the diver’s watch.

The 1965 and 1968 re-creations are powered by the high beat 8L55 movement and the 1975 re-creation carries Caliber 8L35, both developed and assembled expressly for diver’s watches at the Shizukuishi Watch Studio. All three have sapphire crystals with anti-reflective coating on the inner surface. The 1975 re-creation has an increased anti-magnetic resistance of 40,000 a/m thanks to the dial made of pure iron.

All three re-creations share the same blue-gray dial that reflects the beauty of the sea but also hints at their ability to perform at depths which dim the intensity of the oceans’ blue. In particular, the subtle gradation of the dial color on the 1965 and 1968 re-creations dramatizes the way that light gradually fades as one dives deeper into the dark, mysterious world of the ocean.

The straps also pay homage to the originals while being modern in both the material used and their color. The rubber strap with a fabric-like texture of the 62MAS from 1965 is reproduced in silicone for greater strength and comfort. The strap on the 1968 re-creation is also in silicone and has the same pyramid pattern as its predecessor and the 1975 professional diver’s re-creation comes with the signature accordion-type strap.

All three watches will be made available as limited editions of 1,100 at Seiko boutiques and selected retailers worldwide. The 1965, 1968, and 1975 re-creations will be introduced in June, July, and August 2020 respectively.

A special commemorative box with all three re-creations with additional black straps will be available in May 2020. Just 100 sets will be released.

In addition to the limited edition trilogy, the 55th anniversary of Seiko’s first diver’s watch is also celebrated with an all-stainless steel modern re-interpretation. This new version is characterized by its slim profile and a lowered center of gravity that makes it comfortable to wear on even a smaller wrist. It features the same special 55th anniversary blue-gray dial as graces the trilogy and comes with both a stainless steel bracelet and a silicone strap. It is powered by Caliber 6R35 that delivers a power reserve of 70 hours. It will be available in a limited edition of 5,500 at Seiko boutiques and selected retailers worldwide from June 2020.

Seiko 5 Sports Brian May Limited Edition, SRPE83K1

This special edition Seiko 5 Sports watch takes inspiration from the iconic ‘‘Red Special’’ Guitar of rock legend Brian May, the lead guitarist of Queen, one of the world’s most admired and celebrated rock bands. He is also an admirer of Seiko watches. For more than 40 years, Brian has worn a Seiko diver’s watch whose enduringly popular design is the inspiration for the latest Seiko 5 Sports collection. Brian bought his Seiko watch while first on tour in Japan in the 1970’s since when his guitar and his watch have travelled the globe together, making great music and keeping great time.

Seiko 5 Sports Brian May Limited Edition, SRPE83K1

The beautiful dial of this limited edition Seiko 5 Sports watch echoes the design of the guitar which Brian and his father built in the early 1960’s. The guitar was made by hand, with only hand tools. The neck was carved from the wood of an old fireplace, 100 years old at the time. The body was made from blockboard with an ancient oak insert, and covered with a mahogany veneer that Brian stained and polished himself.

The innovative tremolo system designed by Brian featured a hand-carved mild steel rocker plate pivoting on a knife edge, with the pull of the strings balanced by motorcycle valve springs. To complete the job, the tremolo arm was improvised from part of a bicycle saddlebag holder, capped with a piece of a sturdy knitting needle.

With the long-trusted caliber 4R36 at its heart, 10 bar water resistance, a Hardlex crystal and its robust steel case, it has all the qualities that have made Seiko 5 Sports so many fans down the decades. The dial has the same red and black color scheme as the ‘‘Red Special’’ and features a delicate wood-like pattern like the body of the guitar.

The watch is offered as a limited edition with Brian’s signature on the case back and comes with a special presentation box designed on the lines of the Red Special’s custom flight case.

The presentation box also contains a commemorative coin that is based on the sixpenny piece that he has used throughout his career as a plectrum. The watch is presented on a black nylon strap, designed to mirror the strap that Brian now uses on his guitar.

Seiko Astron GPS Solar Novak Djokovic 2020 Limited Edition: SSH045

Celebrating the 6th years of partnership with Novak Djokovic, Seiko has created the Astron GPS Solar Novak Djokovic 2020 Limited Edition watch that offers Seiko’s leadership GPS solar technology in a design based around the shared colors of the flags of Serbia and Japan.

Novak Djokovic is one of the greatest players in tennis history with his astonishing record of 16 Grand Slam victories and 34 ATP Tour Masters 1000 wins. In 2019 alone, Novak won the Australian Open and Wimbledon as well as three other tournaments, including his first in Japan.

Seiko Astron GPS Solar Novak Djokovic 2020 Limited Edition watch

The design of Novak’s new Astron GPS Solar watch reflects the affection in which both Novak and Seiko hold their home nations. Red and white are colors shared by both flags and they are used in every detail, along with the deep blue that is also central to the Serbian flag and denotes ‘‘victory’’ in Japanese culture.

Seiko Astron GPS Solar Novak Djokovic 2020 Limited Edition

The time zones of Serbia and Japan are highlighted in red on the UTC indicator ring at the +1 and +9 positions respectively, the dial ring is in white and the ceramic bezel is in blue with a thin red line within it. The use of color as symbol continues in the gold of the hands and minute track on the dual-time sub-dial, reflecting the heights of Novak’s achievements on the tennis courts of the world.

The GPS Solar Caliber 5X53 Dual-Time connects up to twice a day to the GPS network to maintain its precision* anywhere in the world. It adjusts automatically to Daylight Saving Time** and, when the wearer changes time zone, he or she simply pushes a button and the hands move rapidly to the correct local time, thanks to the system that moves the hour, minute, and seconds hands independently. In addition, the wearer is able to change the main time display instantly from home to local time and vice versa.

Seiko Astron GPS Solar Novak Djokovic 2020 Limited Edition case back

The case back carries Novak’s signature and the individual serial number of the watch. This new Novak Djokovic Astron GPS Solar creation is offered as a limited edition of just 1,500 and is presented in a special box containing an additional silicone strap. It is also accompanied by a card containing a message from Novak. It is available from February 2020 in selected Seiko Boutiques and other selected Seiko retailers worldwide.

Seiko – Automatic Chronograph 50th Anniversary Limited Edition (SRQ029) and Chronograph 55th Anniversary Limited Edition (SRQ031)

With these limited edition timepieces, Seiko celebrates two milestones in Seiko’s chronograph history.

History of Seiko chronographs started with a pocket watch chronograph in the early 1940’s and in 1969, Seiko unveiled Caliber 6139, the world’s first automatic chronograph with a column wheel and vertical clutch. This year, with the launch of two limited edition automatic chronograph timepieces, Seiko is paying tributes to two landmark watches, from 1964 and 1969. One is in the Prospex collection and the other in Presage.

Seiko - Automatic Chronograph 50th Anniversary Limited Edition (SRQ029) and Chronograph 55th Anniversary Limited Edition (SRQ031)

The Caliber 6139 was one of the world’s first automatic chronographs and it incorporated both a column wheel and a vertical clutch, enabling a real improvement in the precision with which elapsed time could be measured in a watch. The new Prospex limited edition watch that commemorates this 1969 landmark uses Seiko’s most advanced chronograph caliber, 8R48, which was first created in 2014.

In addition to the vertical clutch and column wheel, it incorporates Seiko’s unique three pointed hammer and a heart-shaped cam which ensure the perfect synchronization of the hands’ fly-back. The watch is based on a much loved design from that era that became known among Seiko’s fans as the “Panda” thanks to the two black sub-dials set against the white dial. It has the same hairline finish on the dial as the original, the same hands with the same orange tip to the chronograph second hand and the same hour markers and tachymeter bezel markings.

In addition, the new execution offers a third sub-dial for the time of day second hand, an updated case design with Zaratsu polishing and a box-shaped sapphire crystal. It is presented in the Prospex collection as a limited edition of 1,000.

The 1964 Crown Chronograph was Seiko’s, and Japan’s, first chronograph watch. Every aspect of the watch was designed from scratch and it marked the beginning of Seiko’s chronograph wrist watch manufacturing. It had a simple one-push mechanism but it amply demonstrated the same commitment to precision as would Caliber 6139 and all its successors with the inclusion of a column wheel to control the start, stop and reset functions.

The Seiko Chronograph 55th Anniversary limited edition (SRQ03) takes inspiration from design of the 1964 Crown Chronograph with its box shaped crystal, its sharply defined numerals on the narrow bezel and the inwardly tilted case shape that allows the watch to sit tight on the wrist.

The movement is Caliber 8R48 with its 12 hour chronograph and 45 hour power reserve, the crystal is sapphire with anti-reflection coating on the inner surface and the lugs are Zaratsu polished. The watch is presented in the Presage collection as a limited edition of 1,000.

Both timepieces will be available from December, 2019 at Seiko Boutiques and selected retailers worldwide.

Seiko 5 Sports New Edition

Seiko Watch Corporation presents a new edition of their Seiko 5 Sports watch collection, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2018. The new edition carries all the same values of Seiko 5 Sports family but a fresh new look.

Seiko 5 Sports is itself an evolution of the iconic Seiko 5 watch collection. In 1963, the Japanese watch making legend launched the Seiko Sportmatic 5, the first ever Seiko 5 watch. It was Seiko’s and Japan’s first ever automatic day-date watch.

The digit ’5’ in Seiko 5 represents the five key attributes of the line: An automatic movement, a day-date display at the three o’clock position, water resistance, a recessed crown at the four o’clock position and a case and bracelet built for durability. Taken together and in combination with the then new mainspring and shock resistance system, these features gave Seiko 5 its distinctive appearance and its strength.

Introduced in 1968, Seiko 5 Sports was created for the ever-growing number of men and women who wanted a watch they could trust as they played sports. In addition to the fundamental values of Seiko 5, Seiko 5 Sports offered enhanced water resistance, a strengthened crystal and luminous hands and hour markers. Throughout the next decades, Seiko 5 Sports found great international favor as a ‘’go-anywhere’’ watch that offered a unique look and extraordinary value. In particular, the collection became synonymous among younger watch lovers with the many designs that had dials in vivid colors that shocked and delighted in equal measure.

Every Seiko 5 Sports watch boasts high levels of reliability, durability, performance and value that have endeared it to lovers of mechanical watches worldwide. The new Seiko 5 Sports draws its inspiration from the five decades of Seiko 5 Sports’ success and its design is based on one of Seiko’s most loved sports watches.

Every creation in the new collection shares an updated version of this celebrated case and all have the same arrow shaped minute hands, distinctive hour markers and one-way rotating bezel. These timepieces are powered by Seiko’s tried and trusted automatic Caliber 4R36, with 24 jewels, optional manual-winding, a 41 hour power reserve and a hacking second hand.

There are no fewer than 27 different executions, each in one of five styles: Sports, Suits, Specialist, Street and Sense. All have new dials with three-dimensional hour markers and the collection embraces a wide range of straps and bracelets from steel mesh to silicone/leather hybrids.

Seiko 1970 Diver’s Re-creation Limited Edition (Prospex Collection)

When the original 1970’s Seiko diver’s watch was created, its designers had only one thought in mind; to build a diver’s watch that delivered the reliability, durability, precision and legibility that serious adventurers required. They had no eye to the future reputation of the watch they were building; their focus was on performance, with form following function in every aspect of their work.

The case was given a wide, flowing design purely to protect the crown at the 4 o’clock position. Little did they know that a subsequent version of the watch with this same characteristic case design was destined to develop a worldwide following and earn the affectionate and unforgettable nickname of the “turtle.” Today, this 1970 diver’s watch, the father of the “turtle”, is lovingly re-created in Prospex with a high level of functionality that pays tribute to the determination and skill of the original 1970 team.

The uniqueness of the design of the 1970 diver’s watch stemmed largely from the way that the crown, moved to the 4 o’clock position, was protected by the extension of the case around it.
The design turned out to be as memorable as it was functional and this 150 meter water resistant diver’s watch rapidly found favor among those who needed a watch of exceptional strength. It was worn by the Japanese adventurer, Naomi Uemura, when he did a solo dog-sled run from Greenland to Alaska, a journey of 12,000 kilometers that took eighteen months.

The new Prospex re-creation of this 1970 diver’s watch is slightly larger than the original but faithful in every other respect to its design. It is, however, completely up-to-date in its technology. It incorporates caliber 8L35 which was specially designed for use in diver’s watches. The case has a super-hard coating and a dual-curved sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating and is 200 meter water resistant. The upper surface of the bezel rim is Zaratsu polished to a perfect mirror finish. Presented on a high strength silicone strap, this Prospex timepiece is assembled by hand in the Shizukuishi Watch Studio in northern Japan.

It is offered as a limited edition of just 2,500 and available from July in Seiko Boutiques and leading Seiko retail partners worldwide.

Seiko Prospex LX Line (Developed in Collaboration with Ken Okuyama Design)

Ever since it released its first diver’s watch in 1965, Seiko has created many watches that have found favor among sportsmen from professional divers to explorers. Among these many creations, the 1968 Seiko Professional Diver’s watch became one of the most favorite timepieces of sports watch enthusiasts, thanks to its robust design and high functionality.

Today, the spirit of this classic sport watch is expressed anew in a line of watches for sports on land, in the sea and in the sky. The line’s name, LX, hints at the Latin word for light and is a subtle nod to the way that light is reflected in the broad, flat surfaces of each case.

When, at the 2018 Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève, a Prospex re-creation of the 1968 Professional diver’s was honored with the Sports Watch award, the Prospex design team allowed themselves a moment of profound satisfaction. Not only had their creation won the highest possible award for a sports watch but the world’s respect for the design on which the LX line is based was, once again, amply demonstrated.

The design of the Prospex LX line strikes an unusual balance. On the one hand, it is true to its heritage and its overall appearance reveals its strong link with the 1968 professional Diver’s. On the other, it is thoroughly modern in its execution. The center of gravity of the case is lower so that the watch sits comfortably on any wrist. The upper side of the case is set at a more pronounced angle to allow the Zaratsu-polished surfaces to shine more brightly.

Most of all, the contemporary feel of the LX line is revealed in the use of Seiko’s advanced 5R Spring Drive caliber, which offers one-second a day precision alongside high levels of shock and temperature resistance. With these attributes, 5R is the perfect caliber for use in all types of sporting and adventure environment; it has been worn successfully both in space, when it travelled to the International Space Station and was worn on a spacewalk, and at the top of the world, when Yuichiro Miura wore a Spring Drive watch on his third successful ascent of Mount Everest.

The LX line was developed in collaboration with Ken Okuyama Design. With his international experience in the design of automobiles and other high-profile products, Ken Okuyama brings his own special creativity to Prospex LX.

All watches in this first collection have the robustness, legibility and reliability that every sport or adventure demands but different functions have been incorporated for three specific activities. The land version has a GMT hand and a compass bezel for direction finding. The sky version also has a GMT hand and a bi-directional bezel for showing time in an additional time zone and the sea version has a uni-directional bezel to indicate the length of a dive.

In addition to three versions in a light color titanium, the LX line offers a special series of three all-black interpretations. Stripped of all color and reduced to its essentials, the simplicity and strength of the LX design asserts itself in this quietly dramatic design. The case is treated with a black super-hard coating and the flat surfaces are Zaratsu polished. The sky and land versions are presented on leather straps while the sea version is offered with a silicone strap.

Seiko Presage Arita Porcelain Dial

The Presage collection offers elegant wrist watches that combine Seiko’s traditional watchmaking skills with dials that showcase different forms of Japanese craftsmanship, from enamel to Urushi lacquer. Now, Seiko pays tribute to Japan’s rich cultural heritage in a series of two Presage automatic watches with dials made of porcelain from Arita, a town which, for over 400 years, has been the home of porcelain in Japan.

The heritage of Arita porcelain is respected in the color of the dials, white with a trace of blue, which was the color of the earliest Arita porcelain. The dials, which are made in Arita itself, have the rich texture and depth which is the signature of all the finest porcelain.

Arita, a small town on Kyushu, the third largest island in southwest Japan, came to prominence in the early 17th century when clay suitable for porcelain manufacture was discovered. Its porcelain products soon became highly prized in Japan for high quality of the artistry.

Within a generation, Arita porcelain, also known as ‘‘Imari ware’’ after the port from which most was shipped, became recognized overseas and was exported, first to Europe and later across the world when Japan opened its doors to international trade in the 19th century. Today, Arita porcelain is still highly prized worldwide and many porcelain makers still thrive in the town of just 20,000 people, thanks to its long tradition of craftsmanship, to the rich variety of its products and to the uniquely Japanese sensibility that they embody.

Arita porcelain was therefore a natural choice for the dials of a Presage collection but the Presage team needed to be 100% confident in its durability and strength. A new type of Arita porcelain material, created just three years ago, provided the solution. This new porcelain is more than four times harder than the usual material and has both the strength and flexibility required for a Presage watch dial.

The new Presage porcelain dials are made by an experienced manufacturer in Arita that has been making porcelain since 1830. Hiroyuki Hashiguchi is the master craftsman and he and his colleagues have been developing the dials with the Presage team over the past few years.

To produce the dials involves a challenging combination of skill, patience and artistry. First, the base material is put into a special mold which gives dials depth, especially in the version where the power reserve indictor is recessed into the dial with a deep cut. The dials are dried and then fired for the first time at 1,300 degrees to harden and whiten the material. Hashiguchi and his craftsmen then apply the glaze by hand, after which the dials are fired again, this time, cementing the glaze on to the dial, a process which gives the dials their deep, rich finish and the subtle blue tinge. Next, the holes for the date window and hands are cut by laser. Finally, the dials are then fired again to render smooth the surfaces that have been cut.

This new Presage series comprises two interpretations of the design, both of which are powered by Seiko’s high performance 6R series calibers. The first offers caliber 6R27, with a power reserve indicator at the nine o’clock position and a date indicator at six o’clock. The second offers a new caliber, 6R35, which delivers a power reserve of 70 hours.

Of course, every aspect of both watches reflects the care and craftsmanship for which Presage is renowned. The crystal glass is a dual-curved sapphire, the exhibition case back reveals the fine finishing of the 6R movements and both versions are 10 bar water resistant. The Presage Arita Porcelain Dial series will be available from September, 2019 at Seiko Boutiques and selected Seiko retail partners worldwide.

Seiko Presage Urushi Byakudan-nuri Limited Edition

This new artistic creation from the Seiko Presage mechanical watch collection pays tribute to the Japan’s everlasting fascination with the moon. This new limited edition watch features a night sky inspired dial crafted with traditional and ancient art-craft techniques such as Urushi, Byakudan-nuri and Maki-e. The crescent moon shaped power reserve indicator adds further elegance to the dial.

As with the Byakudan-nuri technique, the crescent is first coated with a layer of Urushi lacquer that acts as the adhesive to the fine, gilt-colored powder that is then applied to it. Once the powder is on the dial, the craftsman gently taps it to disperse the powder evenly across the surface and then uses his own specially chosen material to perfect the surface. The result is an indicator that not only reflects the shape of the crescent moon but has the moon’s shimmering, granular texture and contrasts with the smoothness of the sky against which it stands out. At last, the dial is complete. Each one is the result of painstaking efforts over a number of weeks because this Byakudan-nuri technique requires much longer than is needed for a simple Urushi dial.

Every step of these three complex processes, Urushi, Byakudan-nuri and Maki-e, is completed by hand by the craftsmen and women in the studio of Urushi master Isshu Tamura in the Hokuriku region of Honshu, Japan’s main island. Tamura has been responsible for all the Urushi dials in the Presage collection but, because of the combination of crafts involved and the time, patience and skills required, this Byakudan-nuri dial created by Tamura and his team takes Presage into a new realm of watchmaking achievement.

The crystal is a dual-curved sapphire crystal, the exhibition case-back reveals the fine finishing of the 6R movement and the watch offers 10 bar water resistance. The Presage Urushi Byakudan-nuri available from early December in selected Seiko outlets worldwide in a limited edition of 2,000 pieces and each is offered with its own serial number and in a specially designed presentation case. Crescent shape also can be seen on the sapphire case back, affixed by vapor deposition. The watch is offered in a special paulownia wood box.
