Seiko Prospex Speedtimer Solar 1/100th of a Second Chronograph

Seiko expands its Prospex Speedtimer collection by launching four new solar chronograph models inspired by the Japanese watchmaker’s rich and continuing tradition of sports timing. Equipped with the new Seiko Solar Caliber 8A50, these chronographs can measure elapsed time in increments of 1/100th of a second.

These new watches (SFJ001P1, SFJ003P1,SFJ005P1 and SFJ007P1) feature a 1/100th of a second chronograph counter at the two o’clock position, a seconds counter at 12 o’clock, and a 1/10th of a second counter at 10 o’clock.

A sub-dial displaying the hours and the minutes at the six o’clock position differentiates clearly the time-of-day from the chronograph functions. When the stopwatch function is utilized, the time-of-day sub-dial becomes a 60-minute counter, with the hour hand remaining hidden beneath the minute hand.

The hands contrast with the sub-dials to enhance legibility. The hour and minute hands, as well as the indexes of the time-of-day display, are filled with Lumibrite to enhance legibility in the dark. The pushers are specially designed to ensure the high operability and high accuracy when measuring elapsed time.

Since 1985, Seiko has been the timekeeper of choice for World Athletics. In 2023, for the 18th consecutive time, Seiko will be the official timekeeper of the World Athletics Championships, which will be competed in Budapest, Hungary.

The brand has created a new limited edition solar chronograph (reference SFJ007) that celebrates the sporting heritage of both Seiko and the World Athletics Championships.

Its dial texture evokes the surface of the running track, and the hands, as well as the outer ring of each sub-dial, are in gold coloring to call to mind the first-place medal.

Seiko is also offering a limited-edition solar chronograph with the grey-toned dial (reference SFJ005) that celebrates the 40th anniversary of the world’s first analog quartz chronograph, introduced in 1983.

The dial and reddish-orange hands pay respect to the world’s first analog chronograph that displayed elapsed time in increments of 1/100th of a second, which was introduced by Seiko nine years later, in 1992.

All four watches will be available at the Seiko Boutiques and select retail stores worldwide from July 2023. Both commemorative watches will be available as limited editions of 4,000 worldwide.

King Seiko New Models SJE089 and SJE091

Seiko presents two new models (references SJE089 and SJE091) of its modern King Seiko watch.

In 2022, Seiko has revived the King Seiko collection by introducing modern reinterpretations of the iconic King Seiko KSK watch of 1965.

The 1965’s KSK, the most popular King Seiko model, was known for its emblematic appeal thanks to its sharp, angular case and high functionality. Today, Seiko introduces two new timepieces inspired by the classic KSK. They houses the automatic slimline Caliber 6L35. This marks the movement’s first appearance in the main King Seiko collection. This 26 jewel calibre offers a power reserve of 45 hours.

King Seiko SJE089 (SJE089J1)
King Seiko SJE089 (SJE089J1)/ JDM SDKA005

Dressed in 38.6mm diameter and 10.7mm thick cases in stainless steel, the new references are thinner than the manually-wound vintage KSK watch. Effectively capturing the refinement of the original 1965 KSK watch, these models have angular cases with a flat dial featuring faceted hands.

The first King Seiko model (reference SJE089) comes with a silver-colored with a new sunray finishing technique that endows the watch with a finish more understated and delicate than previous KSK-based creations, resulting in a look that is even closer to the original.

The second model, King Seiko SJE091, features a sophisticated dial in a new shade of black created especially to harmonize with the new case design.

King Seiko SJE091 (SJE091J1)
King Seiko SJE091 (SJE091J1)/ JDM SDKA007

On the black dial, the hands have a fine hairline finish that heightens the level of contrast with the dial’s dark surface and enhances legibility.

These new King Seiko watches stand out with refined case design enhanced with slimmer lugs. They are faceted, with large, flat planes and sharp angles. The surfaces are polished to achieve a distortion-free, mirror finish.

A box-shaped sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on the inner surface delivers high legibility from any angle. Not only are the new watches slimmer than the previous limited-edition King Seiko watches that also used the 6L35 movement, but they are also 0.2mm thinner than the original King Seiko KSK, despite having automatic winding and a date window.

Fitted on stainless steel bracelets, both watches will be available at the Seiko Boutiques and select retail stores worldwide from July 2023.

Seiko Astron GPS Solar Watch New Series

Seiko expands its Astron GPS Solar watch collection by introducing new models in titanium.

This new series includes three regular production models with blue, grey or black dial, and a limited-edition watch with a unique, horizontally-striped design. Fusing dynamic and robust design, all four watches will be available at the Seiko Boutiques and select retail stores worldwide from July 2023.

Seiko Astron GPS Solar Watch New Series SSJ013
Seiko Astron GPS Solar SSJ013/ SSJ013J1

Launched in 2012, the Seiko Astron GPS Solar watch connects to the Global Positioning System (GPS) and adjusts to every time zone while generating all the energy it needs from light alone. The brand has now expanded this range by introducing new models featuring a revamped design and equipped with the Caliber 3X62.

Seiko Astron GPS Solar Watch New Series SSJ014
Seiko Astron GPS Solar SSJ014/ SSJ014J1

The newly released models have a case diameter of 41.2mm. The titanium case boasts a faceted bezel with hairline finishing on top, which contrasts with the polished sides. The integrated titanium bracelet has a sharp design that matches the angular case to give the watches a refined appearance. The titanium case and bracelet have a scratch-resistant super-hard coating.

The grey-dial version has a rose gold-colored super-hard coating on its bezel for a distinctive two-tone design.

Seiko Astron GPS Solar Watch New Series SSJ015
Seiko Astron GPS Solar SSJ015/ SSJ015J1

All four watches feature a dial with a simple design with a single sub-dial at 8 o’clock that indicates the receiving process of GPS satellites as well as the watch’s charging status, leap second data receipt, and in-flight mode.

The applied indexes and the hour and minute hands are filled with Lumibrite. The blue, grey, and black dials feature a pattern that evokes the quartz crystals used to create the tuning fork-shaped quartz oscillators of the original Quartz Astron introduced by Seiko in 1969.

For the new watches, Seiko developed a new GPS Solar movement, Caliber 3X62. The watch connects automatically up to twice a day to the GPS network to maintain its precision of one second every 100,000 years.

Seiko Presage Sharp Edged Series Open Heart

Seiko expands its Presage Sharp Edged Series by launching two open heart models with three days of power reserve.

Introduced in 2020, the Seiko Presage Sharp Edged Series stands out its angular silhouette, distinctively patterned dial, and hands and indexes that reflect light while enhancing legibility. Now, the brand presents two new models with a three-day automatic movement and enhanced design features.

Seiko Presage Sharp Edged Series Open Heart

Beating at 21,600 vph, the new automatic Caliber 6R5J boasts an increased power reserve of three days (72 hours) when fully wound. It displays the hour, the minute, and the seconds, as well as a 24-hour sub-dial at 6 o’clock.

The dial opening at 9 o’clock shows the signature asanoha, or “hemp-leaf” pattern, which matches the same pattern seen on the dial surface. The movement’s escapement can be admired through this opening. Indicating the 72 hour power reserve, the dial features the inscription “Automatic 3 Days” below the SEIKO and PRESAGE names.

Equipped with a gold-colored oscillating weight, the Seiko Caliber 6R5J is also visible through an exhibition case back.

This Sharp Edged Series comes with a new design. A dual-curved sapphire crystal makes its first appearance in the Sharp Edged Series, giving a slender look on the wrist. The new crystal also enhances legibility.

An additional mirror-finished facet between the top and side surfaces of the case adds an extra sparkle to the design.

The dial highlights the traditional asanoha pattern, a distinctive motif that has appeared on Japanese textiles since the Heian period over 1,000 years ago.

The new Open-heart watch is available in two dial versions with traditional Japanese colors. The light one (SPB415J1) is called shironeri and is reminiscent of unbleached white silk, and the dark dial (SPB417J1) is aitetsu, or indigo iron.

Seiko Presage Sharp Edged Series Open Heart SPB415J1

The hour markers and seconds hand feature new designs. The markers are sharper and point toward the center of the dial. Gently curved down toward the markers, the seconds hand has a more pronounced and angular counterweight with a spiked tail.

The new Presage Sharp Edged Series Open Heart watches will be available starting in June 2023 at the Seiko Boutiques and select retail partners worldwide.

Seiko 5 Sports 55th Anniversary Masked Rider Limited Edition

Seiko 5 Sports celebrates its 55th anniversary this year. To mark this historical milestone, the brand is releasing a limited edition Seiko 5 Sports watch (reference SRPJ91) in collaboration with Japanese superhero media franchise Masked Rider.

The franchise began in 1971 with the Kamen Rider television series. Takeshi Hongo, the primary protagonist of this highly successful TV series, wore a Seiko 5 Sports and used it as a communication device. Seiko presents four new Presage models to mark the Seiko Watch 110th Anniversary.

These Presage Craftsmanship Series Limited Editions follow the footsteps of the 1913 Laurel-inspired Seiko Presage SPB359J1 watch that was launched early this year to commemorate 110th anniversary of Seiko’s first wristwatch.

Seiko Presage Craftsmanship Series SPB397J1 and SPB399J1 (Seiko Watch 110th Anniversary)

Seiko Prospex 1970 Diver’s Modern Re-interpretation Naomi Uemura Limited Edition, Reference SLA069

Seiko pays tribute to the Japanese mountaineering legend Naomi Uemura (1941-1984) by presenting a new limited edition Prospex diving watch.

Limited to 500 pieces, the Naomi Uemura Edition is based on the Seiko Prospex 1970 Diver’s Modern Re-interpretation watch.

Design Inspiration

Five years after making Japan’s first diver’s watch in 1965, Seiko introduced a new diver’s watch. It features a curving case design and an asymmetrical extension that protected the crown at the four o’clock position. This extremely robust and highly readable timepiece featured a solid steel case offering 150-meter water resistance, and a clear dial with luminous hands and indexes.

This 1970 diver’s watch proved its reliability in extreme conditions when it was worn by Japanese adventurer Naomi Uemura in the Arctic region in the years 1974 to 1976.

Tribute to Naomi Uemura

Born in 1941, Naomi Uemura was a university student when he took on the challenge of his first mountain climb. By the age of 29, he had climbed Mont Blanc, Mt. Kilimanjaro, and Mt. Aconcagua, and, in 1970, he became the first Japanese mountaineer to reach the summit of Mt. Everest. Just three months later, he reached the top of Alaska’s Denali (then known as Mt. McKinley) and thus became the first mountaineer in the world to reach the summits of all these five peaks.

Seiko commemorates Uemura’s ascents of these five mountains with a modern re-interpretation of the 1970 diver’s watch whose dial depicts Mont Blanc, the first of these climbs.

Seiko Prospex Naomi Uemura Limited Edition SLA069J1

The Seiko Prospex Naomi Uemura watch (reference SLA069J1) echoes the design of the 1970 original but is thoroughly modern in execution. The textured dial features an image of the distinctive silhouette and contours of Mont Blanc over a patterned backdrop that echoes the mountain’s rocky and snowy surface.

Pressing and etching techniques are used to give the dial depth and bring the 4,807-meter peak to life. Mont Blanc is presented at the very same angle from which Uemura began his ascent. Moreover, the color theme used for the crown and surface around the bezel insert evokes the blue shadows that surround Mont Blanc.

The timepiece houses the Seiko Caliber 8L35, an automatic mechanical movement with a power reserve rating of 50 hours.

The 44m diameter case in stainless steel has a super-hard coating to protect it from scratches. The case sides are carefully polished. The front crystal is a curved sapphire with an anti-reflective coating on the inner surface. Fitted with solid steel screw-in case-back, the watch has a water resistance rating of 200 meters.

The date window is positioned between four and five o’clock. All 12 hour markers are visible and all have a generous coating of Lumibrite, as do the hands, to maximize legibility in the dark.

The Seiko Naomi Uemura watch has a five-row steel bracelet to create a sharp, modern profile. This limited edition timepiece is presented in a special box featuring Naomi Uemura’s famous words: “When one dream is realized, other dreams will follow.”

This new watch from the Seiko Prospex family will be available as a limited edition of 500 pieces from May 2023 at the Seiko Boutiques and select retailers worldwide.

Seiko Prospex GMT Automatic

For the first time, the Seiko Prospex collection is offering a GMT diving watch with a mechanical movement. The new Prospex GMT series is comprised of three automatic watches, and all of them are modern re-interpretations of a Seiko classic diver from 1968.

Models SPB381J1 and SPB383J1

The first two – SPB381J1 and SPB383J1 – represents two versions of the Prospex 1968 Diver’s Modern Re-interpretation GMT watch. Among them, Seiko Prospex GMT SPB381 features a green dial and a green ceramic bezel insert. The second model (reference SPB383) has a black dial and a black ceramic bezel insert.

The third watch in the new series is Seiko Watchmaking 110th Anniversary Seiko Prospex Save the Ocean Limited Edition (reference SPB385J1).

To equip these new timepieces, Seiko has manufactured a new automatic movement in the 6R family. The new Caliber 6R54 offers a GMT function and a power reserve extended to a full 72 hours.

The GMT hand can be set independently in one-hour increments without interrupting the hands that display the time of primary time zone. This arrangement allows the wearer to quickly identify the time in a second time zone.

The 42mm diameter case is made of super hard-coated stainless steel. They also feature a unidirectional bezel with a scratch-proof ceramic bezel-insert featuring luminous pip. Moreover, these models come with the proprietary Lumibrite luminous pigment coating on the hands and all 12 markers.

Seiko Presage Craftsmanship Series, Seiko Watchmaking 110th Anniversary Edition

To celebrate the 110th anniversary of the first Seiko wristwatch (Laurel, circa 1913), the Japanese watchmaking house has proposed various commemorative editions. The latest addition to this line-up is the Seiko Presage Craftsmanship Series, comprising four special timepieces showcasing traditional Japanese handcraft combined with the company’s mechanical watchmaking skills.

This special anniversary series offers four limited-edition Presage watches featuring different artistic dials: Enamel, Urushi lacquer, Arita porcelain, and Shippo enamel.

Enamel and Urushi Lacquer Dial Versions

The pristine white enamel dial of the Seiko SPB393 Presage model was created by master craftsman Mitsuru Yokosawa and his team. Moreover, this watch features a red Roman numeral at 12 o’clock, evoking the original Laurel wristwatch of 1913.

This model houses an automatic movement with displays for the date, the day of the week, and the power reserve. The Seiko Presage watch with enamel dial (reference SPB393) is fitted with a black leather strap.

The Urushi lacquer dial of the Seiko SPB395 Presage watch was created by Urushi master Isshu Tamura and his team. The coppery brown hue of its dial is inspired by the streetscape of Kanazawa, located in Ishikawa Prefecture.

Embodying of the ancient Japanese craft, this timepiece has the same automatic movement that drives the enamel dial version. The Seiko Presage Urushi lacquer dial version (reference SPB395) has a dark brown leather strap.

Furthermore, both Presage models (SPB393 and SPB395) are equipped with the Seiko Cal. 6R24, a 31 jewel self-winding mechanical movement with a 45 hour power reserve and stop second hand function. It drives centrally placed hour, minute and seconds hands as well the indicators of retrograde day & date, and power reserve.

Arita Porcelain and Shippo Enamel Dial Versions

The Arita Porcelain dial of the Seiko SPB397 Presage model was created by Master craftsman Hiroyuki Hashiguchi and his team. The ivory color dial takes us to the Izumiyama Ceramic Stone Field in Arita, Japan. This small town in Saga Prefecture is world renowned for its porcelain.

The movement used for powering Presage SPB397 and SPB399 models is the Seiko Cal. 6R27. This 29 jewel self-winding movement has a power reserve of 45 hours. The Presage Arita Porcelain and Shippo enamel dial variants display the date through a small dial positioned at 6 o’clock and the power reserve at 9 o’clock.

Common Features

The timepieces from the new Presage Craftsmanship Series feature a new case shape with refined angles and an elegant sense of proportion.

Made of stainless steel with super hard coating, the case has a diameter of 40.2mm (models SPB393 and SPB395) or 40.6mm (models SPB397 and SPB399). Fitted with a screw-in case-back with exhibition glass widow, all the four watches are water resistant to 100 meters.

Each dial features a new design with alternating roman numerals and indexes. The dual-curved sapphire crystal enables the dial to appear even closer and more legible, bringing a truly striking appearance to the craftsmanship on display.

All the four watches from the Seiko Watchmaking 110th Anniversary Presage Craftsmanship Series will be available from June 2023 at the Seiko boutiques and select retail partners worldwide.

The enamel, Urushi lacquer and Arita porcelain dial watches will be offered as limited editions of 1,500 pieces. Meanwhile, the Shippo enamel dial watch is a limited edition of 800 pieces.
