RGM Model 25 USS Constitution Limited Edition

RGM, the fine watchmaker based in Pennsylvania, is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. Limited to a maximum of 3 pieces, the new Model 25 is a tribute to the USS Constitution.

It is the third watch release for RGM’s 30th anniversary, and the brand’s second watch model with a hand-made wood marquetry dial.

RGM Model 25 USS Constitution Limited Edition

The Model 25 watches have an American-made case inspired by the company’s larger Pennsylvania series watches. The case has ribbed sides, a beautifully contoured bezel, and is 40mm in diameter, with curved down lugs.

RGM Model 25 USS Constitution Limited Edition

The case was designed to highlight the dial with its large dial opening. The art on the dial depicts the USS Constitution leaving the British Navy Shipyard at Malta, November 1, 1804.

The art features the departure of the USS Constitution following repairs at the Naval Dockyard during the Tripolitan war when the ship was granted permission by the Royal Navy to use Malta as a base.

RGM Model 25 USS Constitution Limited Edition

The art also captures the landmarks of the Grand Harbour and the profile of the later-to-be-named “Old Ironsides”. The dial beautifully denotes the long maritime association between Malta, the United States, and Great Britain.

RGM Model 25 USS Constitution Limited Edition

Visible through the sapphire crystal case-back is a modified automatic mechanical movement with a 42-hour power reserve.

RGM Type 1 – Montgomery (Marginal Minute Dial)

Celebrating its 30th Anniversary year, RGM adds another Railroad dial to the Model 222-RR series.

Inspired by America’s Great Railroad Watches from the past, the Model 222-RR is a modern wristwatch with a vintage heart, featuring a Hamilton pocket watch movement. RGM was the first to use these wonderful classic movements in a wristwatch.

RGM Type 1 - Montgomery (Marginal Minute Dial)

These vintage Hamilton movements are rebuilt using parts that are in optimum condition, including a new mainspring made for this movement. The watchmaker of RGM flat polishes the steel parts by hand on a tin block to better-than-original condition.

RGM Type 1 - Montgomery (Marginal Minute Dial)

The entire process of careful reassembly to precise adjustment of the movement is managed by one watchmaker. The grade 921 movement has 21 jewels and was made in large quantities; the grade 923 has 23 jewels and is rare, with less than 4,000 movements manufactured.

RGM Type 1 - Montgomery (Marginal Minute Dial)

The Grand Feu Real Enamel dial is modeled after American railroad watches from the past. The blued-steel hands remain true to the classic form and the 1:30 crown position pays homage to early 20th century timepieces. It’s also very natural to read the time when worn on the left wrist.

Henry S. Montgomery was the General Watch & Clock Inspector of the AT&SF Railroad from 1896 to 1923. Mr. Montgomery patented his first marginal minute safety dial design Type I around 1906. This is the design that has inspired the new version of RGM’s Model 222-RR watch.

RGM Type 1 - Montgomery (Marginal Minute Dial)

A Montgomery dial displays minutes 1-60 along the outer edge, with every fifth number in red. Some collectors say that a “true” Montgomery dial must have an hour number 6 visible inside the seconds’ register. Dials approved for use on the railroads needed to be functional and readable, even under adverse conditions. Most American watch companies used Montgomery dials on many of their railroad-grade watches.

RGM Type 1 - Montgomery (Marginal Minute Dial)

The watch features the crown at the 1:30 position. During the Transitional Period from the early 1900s into the 1920s, some wristwatches appeared with the winding crown in this less common position on the wristwatch case.

RGM Type 1 - Montgomery (Marginal Minute Dial)

Some watch companies converted movements and dials that were originally designed for a pocket or pendant watch into a wristwatch by making the crown position on the wristwatch case at the 1:30 or 2:00 O’clock.

Celebrating the unique look of those early wristwatches is the inspiration behind the RGM Model 222-RR. It also keeps the orientation of the sub-second in line with the 12 O’clock position thus preserving the original design of the railroad-style dial.

RGM Model 600-B Chronograph

In 2021, RGM introduced a vintage inspired chronograph with black dial: Model 600. Founded in 1992, the Mount Joy (PA, USA) based watchmaker is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. Boasting a blue dial, the Model 600-B Chronograph is the first RGM model to be released during this milestone year.

RGM Model 600-B Chronograph

The Model 600-B design was inspired by military and pilot chronographs of the 1960s and ‘70s. The dial’s military aesthetic makes it easy to read; the time and chronograph functions are legible with a simple glance at the wrist.

Each detail was carefully crafted to reflect the appeal of vintage military watches, including the general layout, and replicating numerical fonts to achieve a bona fide military chronograph look.

RGM Model 600-B Chronograph

The dial and hands feature X1 SuperLumaNova for low-light visibility. As homage to vintage design, the brand opted to forgo including a calendar or display case-back.

The M-600-B is RGM’s first production model with a box-style raised sapphire crystal, bolstering the classic design element and allowing for a slimmer profile.

RGM Model 222-RR (Railroad) Type II Montgomery Marginal Minute

Inspired by America’s Great Railroad Watches from the Past, the US watch manufacture RGM adds new Railroad dial version to their Model 222-RR series.

RGM Model 222-RR (Railroad) Type II Montgomery Marginal Minute

The Model 222-RR is a modern wristwatch with a vintage heart, featuring a Hamilton 10 sized pocket watch movement. RGM was the first to use these wonderful classic movements in a wristwatch. These vintage Hamilton movements are rebuilt using parts that are in optimum condition, including a new mainspring made for this movement.

RGM Model 222-RR (Railroad) Type II Montgomery Marginal Minute

The Model 222-RR now welcomes a new dial version: Type II Montgomery Marginal Minute Style Dial. Henry S. Montgomery was the General Watch & Clock Inspector of the AT&SF Railroad from 1896 to 1923. Mr. Montgomery patented his first marginal minute safety dial design Type-I around 1906. RGM’s dial is inspired by the rare Type-II dial variation that was patented in 1920.

A Montgomery dial displays minutes 1-60 along the outer edge, with every fifth number in red. Some collectors say that a “true” Montgomery dial must have an hour number 6 visible inside the seconds register. Most American watch companies used Montgomery dials on many of their railroad-grade watches.

RGM Model 222-RR (Railroad) Type II Montgomery Marginal Minute

The Model 222-RR watch is also available with a box car style dial. In 1925, Ball introduced a new official RR standard dial referred to as the Box Car dial. It displayed plain, sans-serif, heavy hour figures, making the dial extremely legible.

RGM Model 222-RR (Railroad) Type II Montgomery Marginal Minute

Waltham, too, offered a similar Box Car dial, as did Elgin and Hamilton on some of their railroad models. Box Car style dials were in demand by railroad employees. They remain popular for their functionality and understated style.

RGM PS-801-Skeleton

US watch brand RGM introduces its latest timepiece, the PS-801-Skeleton.

The Caliber 801 was introduced in 2007 as RGM’s first in-house movement. Now, after more than a year in development, RGM introduces a classic skeleton version of its most famous movement.

RGM PS-801-Skeleton

A solid gold plaque at the bottom of the dial divides the minute into thirds. The three arm second hand enables a clear view of the movement and the escapement. The different lengths of the arms of the second hand allow for easy reading of the seconds as they pass.

RGM PS-801-Skeleton watch

All of the components of the movement are hand finished using traditional techniques. The matte grain finish and polished bevels (anglage) on the bridges and main plate require many hours by a skilled craftsman.

RGM PS-801-Skeleton watch case back

Inspiration was taken from skeleton watches from the early 20th century which were less ornate with clean lines and a functional aesthetic.

RGM PS-801-Skeleton watch movement

The watch is housed in a polished stainless steel Pennsylvania series case. With its large lugs and ribbed sides, the watch is architecture on the wrist. Like most of the components of the Caliber 801, the case is also made in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, USA, and finished by hand.

RGM PS-801-CE, Classic Enamel (801 Pennsylvania Series)

USA based traditional watch maker RGM adds its new watch model Classic Enamel to the 801 Pennsylvania Series Models.

RGM PS-801-CE, Classic Enamel (801 Pennsylvania Series)

The classic double sunk enamel dial of this new model is inspired by classic pocket watches from the past. The double sunk enamel dial is made of three separate pieces and then soldered together to make the dial; the same technique that was used on pocket watch dials over 100 years ago.

RGM PS-801-CE, Classic Enamel watch 801 Pennsylvania Series

The three different layers of enamel give the dial depth and add to the overall beauty of the watch. This kind of dial can only be made by a very experienced and skilled enamel dial craftsman.

RGM PS-801-CE, Classic Enamel watch

The Grand Feu technique was utilized to make these dials. The watch is powered with RGM’s original in-house movement: Caliber 801. Inspired by America’s great watchmaking history, the caliber 801 highlights classic bridge shapes reminiscent of Keystone Howard Watch Company’s Edward Howard model.

RGM PS-801-CE, Classic Enamel (801 Pennsylvania Series)

The unique winding click is inspired by the Illinois Illini model. The entirely hand finished and decorated 801 movement denotes the quality of its construction, including polished and blued steel components. The movement can also be customized.

RGM Artwork Watch Collection – Model 25 Art Watches & Lady RGM Art Watches

Inspired by art and old-world craft, RGM Watch Company has created men’s and ladies’ watches with art and handcraft as the main theme. The RGM Artwork watches feature the talents of artists from all over the world. Included techniques are cloisonné, wood marquetry, and miniature hand painting, one using luminous paint, and the other performed on a mother of pearl canvas.

RGM Artwork Watch Collection - Model 25 Art Watches & Lady RGM Art Watches

The men’s watches highlight the arts of cloisonné and wood marquetry. The cloisonné dial is inspired by Claude Monet’s Regatta at Argenteuil. From St. Augustine, Florida, Castillo de San Marcos is the inspiration for the wood marquetry dial.

RGM Artwork Watch Collection

The art on the dial is framed by a 40mm stainless steel coin-edged American made case, with a Swiss automatic movement fitted with a solid gold winding rotor made by RGM.

RGM Model 25 Art Watches & Lady RGM Art Watches

The ladies’ watches showcase hand painting in miniature. A lotus flower is portrayed using luminous paint, revealing depth and character to the piece. The other watch features a floral design with a blue titmouse painted on mother of pearl, which brings the scene to life. These pieces of art are framed in a 28mm solid rose gold case (or optional stainless steel case) and are powered by a manual wind Swiss movement.

RGM Artwork Watch

Like RGM’s other old-world crafts of guilloche and grand feu enamel, these techniques can also be commissioned in a unique bespoke piece per the client’s wishes.

RGM WATCHES

Lancaster, Pennsylvania, famous for its Amish community, has a rich watchmaking heritage that owes much to the famed Hamilton Watch Company. RGM calls this same area home, with their facilities in Mount Joy, Pennsylvania. RGM is not a conventional luxury watch brand. RGM produces timeless classics reminiscent of traditional mechanical watches of the past.

Just as legendary watchmakers have personally sold their complicated movements and expertise to fascinated watch connoisseurs, Roland Murphy, RGM’s American-born founder, markets his exclusive collection of custom-designed complications in similar fashion. Unlike many modern watch brands, the name behind these masterpieces is alive, well, and willing to personally educate and inform consumers about his creations.

Cherished by passionate watch collectors, RGM watches are crafted only in an extremely small series and made of 18k gold, platinum, or stainless steel. They feature hand-finished cases and such elements as Engine-Turned (Guilloché) dials and blued-steel hands. In every case they are of the highest quality in their price range. Every limited-edition watch is individually numbered and signed.

RGM is small enough to offer exclusivity, yet experienced and knowledgeable enough to offer a wide array of options to the discerning buyer. RGM offers customizations that range from the simple to the sublime. A “production model” RGM watch can be customized with a unique dial or a personalized engraved rotor. The wristwatch connoisseur who desires a truly unique piece can work with RGM staff to create a timepiece designed to your specifications.

RGM’s most recent venture has been to create the first mechanical watch movement to produced in a series on American soil since the late 1960’s – the Caliber 801. Named for the street address of the RGM Watch Company’s work shop in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, the new movement represents a bold step in American horology. The introduction of Caliber 801 is meant to celebrate a milestone, not only in RGM’s history, but also in the tradition of American watchmaking.

In addition to creating fine watches, RGM also repairs and restores some of the finest timepieces from the most famous houses worldwide. The range of services includes cosmetic work, such as refinishing cases and bracelets or replacing crystals; movement overhauls, with disassembly, cleaning, lubricating, and reassembly being just the starting point; custom modifications, such as the addition of one-of-a-kind dials or movement complications; and beyond.

RGM William Penn Re-edition

United States based luxury watch brand RGM has reissued the popular William Penn Model. The William Penn, originally released about 18 years ago, features a tonneau-shaped movement in either a stainless steel or 18k rose gold rectangular case.

RGM William Penn Re-edition stainless steel watch

The original William Penn models were introduced with three versions – one with a sub-second, one with date and one with moon phase. The current reissue includes only the moon phase model, marrying a new guilloché dial with new old stock case and hands.

RGM William Penn watch Re-edition

The William Penn series is named after the founder of Pennsylvania. Penn established an American sanctuary which protected freedom of conscience. He gave Pennsylvania a written constitution which limited the power of government, provided a humane penal code and guaranteed many fundamental liberties.

RGM William Penn watch Re-edition 2018 18k solid rose gold

The renowned founder of Pennsylvania was also a modest man: he worried people would think he named the state after himself; in fact, it was named after his father. It seems fitting that RGM would choose to name their collection after the founder of the state they call home.

In celebration of RGM’s 25th anniversary, the US based tradition watch maker will provide a special opportunity for the public and press to see American Watchmaking at RGM’s Open House on Friday, September 15 and Saturday, September 16, 2017.

Many watch aficionados know how passionate Roland Murphy is about preserving alive the craft of guilloché. This event will allow participants to observe this machinery in motion as he demonstrates how RGM creates some of the beautiful engraved patterns characteristic of their watches. It is a great opportunity to discover firsthand vintage machines working in harmony with modern technology to create unique timepieces. The open house will also provide the opportunity to observe the making and finishing of watch parts and assembly of movements.

The second phase of the event will take place at the National Watch and Clock Museum in Columbia, PA. RGM will unveil several new watch models and give away some RGM swag. Light refreshments will be provided. As a special bonus, attendees will be guided through the museum by Mr. Murphy himself. Pre-registration is not required.

Since 1992 RGM Watch Company has provided quality luxury timepieces and complications to a variety of clientele. Located in historic Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, RGM is the only watch company to produce a high-grade mechanical movement in a series in the United States since the late 1960’s. In addition to producing their own high-grade watches, RGM has been chosen by museums, noted collectors, auction houses and watch companies to service and restore rare and exclusive watches.

RGM Pennsylvania Series Caliber 801 Chess (PS-801-CH) Limited Edition

With this new limited edition timepiece, American traditional watch manufacture RGM is beginning the celebration of its 25th anniversary by immortalizing Chess in enamel. This new timepiece takes inspiration from an iconic pocket watch owned by American Chess Master Paul Morphy and manufactured by American Watch Company.

RGM Pennsylvania Series Caliber 801 Chess (PS-801-CH) Limited Edition
In May 1859, Paul Morphy was presented with a pocket watch from the Testimonial Committee of the New York Chess Club as a tribute to his genius and worth. The watch, made by American Watch Company, was an elegant specimen of art and ingenuity. Unfortunately, it vanished sometime after 1921.

RGM Pennsylvania Series Caliber 801 Chess (PS-801-CH)

Not much is known about what happened to the pocket watch given to Morphy for his achievements; today only the original dial survives, on display at the NAWCC Watch and Clock museum in Columbia, PA, USA. It was here that RGM’s Roland Murphy first saw this unique enamel dial that he knew would one day be the inspiration in an RGM model. Instead of the usual Roman numerals on the dial, various chess pieces represent the hours, finely done in red and black.

RGM Pennsylvania Series Caliber 801 Chess (PS-801-CH) watch

The Black King stands at twelve, the Red King at six, the Queens at one and eleven, Bishops at two and ten, Knights at three and nine, Castles at four and eight, and Pawns at five and seven.

RGM Pennsylvania Series Caliber 801 Chess (PS-801-CH) dial

RGM chose to create their enamel dial with similar chess pieces indicating the hours. “Chess in Enamel” also marks the first time RGM has released a double-sunk Grand Feu enamel dial in one of its models.

RGM Pennsylvania Series Caliber 801 Chess (PS-801-CH) Limited Edition watch

Under this extraordinary dial is RGM’s original in-house movement: Caliber 801, which is also celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2017. Inspired by America’s great watch making history, the 801 highlights classic bridge shapes, reminiscent of Keystone Howard Watch Company’s “Edward Howard” model.

RGM Pennsylvania Series Caliber 801 Chess (PS-801-CH) watch

The unique winding click is inspired by the Illinois “Bunn Special.” Like the great Railroad watches from America’s past, the 801 features a high-grade finish that denotes the quality of its construction, including polished and blued steel components. The movement can also be customized.

RGM Pennsylvania Series Caliber 801 Chess (PS-801-CH) Limited Edition watch movement

The watch is housed in a polished stainless steel “Pennsylvania series” case. With its large lugs and ribbed sides, the watch is architecture on the wrist. Like many of the components of the Caliber 801, the case is also made in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, USA, and finished by hand.

RGM Pennsylvania Series Caliber 801 Chess (PS-801-CH) Limited Edition

Inspired by Pennsylvania’s popular nickname, blued steel Keystone hands mark the time. The Keystone winding crown completes the Pennsylvania theme.

The RGM Pennsylvania Series Caliber 801 Chess watch is limited to 25 pieces in stainless steel.

Guitar Manufacturer C.F. Martin & Co. Collaborates with Premier American Watchmaker RGM Watch Co. for Showstopper Model and Introduces Limited Edition D-200 Deluxe Series

The legendary guitar manufacturer C.F. Martin & Co. is celebrating the two millionth guitar produced by the brand. This milestone product will be unveiled at Winter NAMM 2017 in Anaheim, CA from January 19-22, 2017.

To commemorate this remarkable milestone model, the leading guitar manufacturer has partnered with America’s premier watchmaker RGM Watch Co. another historic Pennsylvania-based company, to create a stunning one-of-a-kind model that will have a custom working RGM timepiece built into the headstock of the guitar.

Martin Guitar and RGM will also collaborate on the limited edition D-200 Deluxe. This collector’s model is limited to only 50 guitars and each model will feature a beautiful watch theme throughout the design, including the pickguard which has pearl inlays of watch gears. The guitar will also come with a custom RGM watch.

2 Millionth Guitar

The two millionth guitar will feature a D-45 style body, with the back and sides constructed from Brazilian rosewood. The top is crafted from highly-figured bearclaw Engelmann spruce. The intriguing aspect of the guitar is the use of a watch motif to mark the anniversary, replete with decorative gears, guilloché (a process of cutting geometric patterns into metal), decorative inlays and a working watch embedded within the headstock.

In order to bring this idea to life, Martin recruited the help of one of America’s most notable watchmakers, Roland G. Murphy of RGM. Chris Martin IV, Chairman and CEO of Martin Guitars, instantly saw the value in what RGM brought to the table.

D-200 Deluxe

After 184 years, and in celebration of the two-millionth serial number milestone, C. F. Martin & Co. is introducing the D-200 Deluxe. In collaboration with renowned watchmaker Roland G. Murphy (RGM), this unprecedented instrument is symbolic of the passage of time with a unique watch theme displayed throughout the many highly decorative aspects of the model. A classic 14-fret Style 45 Dreadnought is the basis for this work of art.

The top is crafted from highly-figured bearclaw Engelmann spruce that features an aluminum rosette with guilloché engraving – a refined process of cutting geometric patterns into metal that also appears on the stainless steel tuning machine buttons of the edition.

The guitar’s back of rare pre-CITES Brazilian rosewood, is inlaid with spectacular watch gears cut from reconstituted stone, mother-of-pearl, bloodwood, Hawaiian koa and ebony. The equally spectacular soundboard inlays feature a minute track in mother-of-pearl, birdseye maple, flamed Hawaiian koa and ebony, and a pickguard with pearl inlaid watch gears. Yet another unique decorative detail is the triple-strand abalone pearl striping that bisects the length of each side, referencing the early Spanish-inspired instruments of C. F. Martin Sr.

The maple bound ebony fingerboard showcases watch gear mechanisms with the highest level of delicate inlay art. Each guitar is furnished with a newly-designed wearable edition watch from RGM that references details from the D-200 guitar design and bears a matching serial number with each edition instrument.

Lastly, each guitar comes in a premium aluminum Zero Manufacturing attaché case with a built-in hygrometer that allows the interior environment of the case to be seen without the need to open the case. Limited to no more than 50 highly-collectable pristine guitars, this instrument will be played and prized until the end of time. (MSRP: $149,999)

RGM 151-COE Corps of Engineers Watch

Following on the success of the 801-COE Corps of Engineers Watch, US based watch maker RGM has introduced a smaller automatic version of the Corps of Engineers design.

A perfect complement to its big brother, the 151-COE incorporates many of the same design features that make the 801-COE so desirable, like the real glass Grand Feu enamel dial and classic style blued steel hands.

RGM 151-COE Corps of Engineers Watch

The 151-COE also boasts a beautiful RGM-made solid gold rotor, specifically designed for this model. Like all RGM 151 models, the case is made in the USA of either surgical quality 316L stainless steel or aircraft quality titanium.

Similar to the original from which RGM drew its inspiration, the dial on the Corps of Engineers 151 is a work of art. The General Railroad Timepiece Standards of 1893 required that the watches have bold Arabic numerals on a white dial with dark hands.

RGM 151-COE Corps of Engineers Watch

RGM’s new timepiece features an easily readable deep white glass enamel dial with large luminous numbers. The hands are also classically made of luminous blued steel in a period style that perfectly match the dial and design of the complete watch. The luminous material on the dial and hands is non-radioactive SuperLumiNova.

Under this extraordinary dial and hands is a Swiss automatic movement modified by RGM, including the RGM-made solid 14 karat gold winding rotor.

RGM Model 151-PR Professional Pilot

United States based watch brand RGM welcomes a new model to its automatic pilots’ watch line up – the 151-PR “Professional Pilot.”

This new model has a very technical but traditional pilot style dial with large Super-Luminova numbers for low light visibility. Two versions are available: one with a date window at 3 o’clock and a more period look without a date.

The dial displays hours 1 thru 12 and the minutes 5 thru 60. The dial and second hand have red accents which blend nicely with the classic rhodium finished sword style hands.

A prominent element of all 151 models is the American-made stainless steel case, or option titanium case. Each case part is cut from a solid block of 316L surgical stainless steel or aircraft quality titanium.

The 151-PR is a functional, technical and aesthetically pleasing pilot watch which fits very comfortably on the wrist. It is a welcome addition to the RGM 151 line up of technical Pilot watches.

RGM Watch Company in House 801 Collection (New Models: 801-EE and PS-801-EE)

US based mechanical watch atelier RGM Watch Company has announced two new additions to their in-house 801 collection: 801-EE and PS-801-EE. These latest models combine two time-honored crafts: Grand Feu Enamel and Guilloché, or Engine-Turning.

RGM Watch Company in House 801 Collection

Following on the heels of their first two enamel-dial models, RGM has created an enamel skeleton dial version. Grand Feu enamel requires the repeated baking of each layer of powdered glass at extremely high temperatures to ensure a uniquely crisp aesthetic while permanently setting the enamel.

RGM Watch Company in House 801 Collection

The Roman or Arabic numerals are baked into the surface, creating the vivid, unmistakable appearance distinctive of a real glass enamel dial.

The enamel skeleton dial reveals the hand cut Guilloché mainplate. Guilloché, or Engine-Turning, is a centuries old craft that today involves the use of antique hand-cranked machines to cut or engrave delicate geometric patterns. RGM has 6 vintage and antique machines that are used to decorate dials, or in this case, the movement mainplate.

RGM Watch Company in House 801 watch collection

The pattern seen on the mainplate of these models is called Moiré. This complex geometric pattern is achieved when each line is slightly offset from the previous cut line, thus creating a classically pleasing effect that can captivate the wearer of the timepiece.

Exposed under this unique skeleton dial and hand cut Guilloché mainplate is RGM’s original in house American movement: Caliber 801.

Inspired by America’s great watchmaking history, the 801 has classically shaped bridges, hand polished or blued steel components, and is entire hand finished and decorated. The movement can also be customized at the client’s request. The watch is housed in a polished 316L stainless steel or 18 karat solid gold case.

RGM 801 Corps of Engineers Watch

US based RGM Watch Company launches 801 Corps of Engineers Watch, a fine hand wound mechanical watch featuring enamel dial.

When the United States joined “The Great War” in April 1917, British and French governments made the arrival of American engineers their top priority. By the end of August 1917, nine newly organized engineer railway regiments, recruited largely from the nation’s private railway workers, had arrived in France.

Since the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers had adopted the General Railroad Timepiece Standards of 1893, they brought with them about 1,000 American-made Hamilton railroad watches that met those standards. Each watch incorporated several technical features to ensure easy winding, legibility and accuracy to within 30 seconds a week.

RGM 801 Corps of Engineers Watch

In an effort to reduce reliance on transatlantic shipping routes, the AEF Quartermaster Corps chose to procure more watches from within Europe, ordering from several Swiss companies.

The original Corps of Engineer watches had real glass enamel dials, widely used in the watch industry at the time, though rare in modern watches. Since the beauty and depth of a real glass enamel dial cannot be simulated, the only way to achieve this classic look was to produce it in the same way.

So the dial was designed and a master of the Grand Feu technique was commissioned to make the enamel dials. Similar to the original from which RGM drew its inspiration, the dial on the Corps of Engineers 801 is a work of art. The General Railroad Timepiece Standards of 1893 required that the watches have bold Arabic numerals on a white dial with dark hands.

RGM’s model features an easily readable deep white glass enamel dial with large luminous numbers. The hands are also classically made of luminous blued steel in a period style to match the dial and design of the complete watch. The luminous material on the dial and hands is non-radioactive SuperLumiNova.

Under this extraordinary dial and hands is RGM’s original in-house American movement: Caliber 801. Inspired by America’s great watchmaking history, the 801 has classic bridge shapes, hand polished or blued steel components, and is entirely hand-finished and decorated. The movement can also be customized at the client’s request.

RGM Pennsylvania Series 801 “Baseball in Enamel” Limited Edition

US based luxury watch manufacture RGM unveils a new limited edition timepiece from its Pennsylvania Series featuring a Grand Feu enamel dial inspired by baseball, the most popular game in America.

While touring the National Watch and Clock Museum in Columbia, Pennsylvania, USA three or four years ago, RGM Watch Company founder Roland G. Murphy became intrigued by a display of watches with unique enamel dials.

The collection included a rare 1892 American Waltham Watch Co. pocket watch featuring a baseball-themed enamel dial. Murphy was captivated by a watch that married American watchmaking history with America’s pastime, baseball. The idea was born to make a modern watch inspired by this classic American theme.

RGM Pennsylvania Series 801 “Baseball in Enamel” Limited Edition

Creating an enamel watch dial is a high-risk art. Enameling is a technique in which colored powdered glass is applied to a metal plate. The surface is then heated to a temperature high enough to cause the powdered glass to melt and form a new surface. The Grand Feu technique involves meticulously coating a watch dial with successive layers of enamel. Once a layer is ready, the dial is heated at extremely high temperatures, ranging from 1472-1652°F (800-900°C).

The repeated baking of each individual layer ensures a uniquely crisp aesthetic while permanently setting the enamel. Using high heat to create these beautiful dials also poses a risk. Each time it is re-fired, the danger of cracking, melting, or burning increases. The Roman numerals and baseball figures are also baked into the surface.

The watch in the museum’s collection from which Murphy drew his inspiration features a detailed colour illustration of a baseball player positioned at each hour mark. Each individual representation depicts a player in a variety of poses, including batting, throwing, catching, sliding and fielding.

RGM Pennsylvania Series 801 Baseball in Enamel watch

A crossed baseball bat motif in the center displays a banner reading “Waltham.” The company name, “American Waltham Watch Co.” is also lettered directly above the sub-second dial. Wanting to pay homage to this work of art, the RGM dial is strikingly similar.

Because each known example of the Waltham watch had different hands, RGM chose their blued steel Keystone hands as a nice complement to the white enamel of the dial. Under this extraordinary dial is RGM’s original in-house movement: Caliber 801.

RGM Pennsylvania Series 801 “Baseball in Enamel” Limited Edition

Also inspired by America’s great watchmaking history, the 801 has classic bridge shapes, polished or blued steel components and is entirely hand-finished and decorated. The movement can also be customized.

The watch is housed in a polished stainless steel “Pennsylvania series” case. Like many of the components of the Caliber 801, the case is also made in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, USA. The keystone winding crown completes the Pennsylvania theme.

The watch was unveiled next to the original pocket watch on September 27, 2014, at the National Watch and Clock Associations’ museum in Columbia, Pennsylvania, USA.

RGM Reference 151A “Pro Aviator” Automatic

RGM Watch Company announces a new automatic pilots’ watch model 151A “Pro Aviator.”

A hallmark of RGM Watch Company is combining tradition with innovation. Many RGM clients opt to completely custom design their timepiece; others prefer less complex options that still make their watch distinctive. Justifying this spirit, the new model sports a technical dial with large Super-Luminova numbers, which calls to mind the early days of intercontinental aviation.

The dial displays hours 1 thru 12 and 13 thru 24, with emphasis on 3, 6, 9 and 12. A subtle calendar window at 4:30 completes the dial. The watch also features new luminous hands with a bold, yet classic, feel.

RGM Series 2 Professional Limited Edition Diver (300-2)

After the successful launch of their initial dive watch (RGM Model 300), US’s premium mechanical watch maker RGM Watch Company introduces Series 2 professional diver model in a limited series.

This second series, known as 300-2, comprises 100 examples with a very special set of blue color options appropriate to exploring the deep blue sea or the wild blue yonder.

On the new Model 300-2, a brushed blue bezel insert replaces the standard black one and immediately attracts the eye. To complement this change, two blue dials are also available—the first is matte blue single-sunk, based loosely on the original matte black version.

RGM Series 2 Professional Limited Edition Diver (300-2)

However, this Series 2 blue dial includes some interesting design changes. The hour markers do not extend into the sunken portion of the dial, and the date window can be placed at either 3:00 or 6:00. The hue of the matte dial exactly matches that of the bezel, creating a multi-layer effect that is striking.

A second dial option is Sunray Blue—a dynamic, metallic finish that reflects varying shades of blue depending upon the angle and the available light. This is also available with the date placement options described above.

Even in low light, the 300-2 adheres to the blue theme; though the hands and markers are treated with white SuperLuminova C1, it emits blue light. The hands are partially skeletonized; another subtle change from the Series 1 black Model 300.

As with all RGM Professional watches, the blue Model 300-2 will be of sturdy construction: water resistant to 2500 feet, made of high-quality steel, and available with steel bracelet, or with silicon straps of blue or black. Custom options are also available—as on all RGM watches—including mother-of-pearl dials or personalized engraving.

RGM Reference 400 Automatic Chronograph

The latest in the family of RGM chronographs is Reference 400, a new automatic with design cues that hearken back to some of the glory days of classic auto racing. This self-winding marvel blends a functional layout with eye-catching color to produce a bold statement resulting from distinct harmonious elements.

Ref. 400 chronographs represent a slight departure from the previous Professional models, but the attention to detail and the quality remain indisputably RGM. Brushed and polished case elements, a new style of bezel, and the layered construction of the dial are all indications that significant thought and energy has been expended into producing a sporty chronograph with few peers.

RGM Reference 400 Automatic Chronograph with black dial

The stainless steel case of 42.2 mm x 15.2 mm houses an accurate and reliable high-grade movement, visible though a broad display back. A theme of layering or stacking is continued from the exterior (bezel, pushers) to the face of the watch, whose layered dial and geometric hands allow maximum readability.

Features of the dial include legible and luminous indications, displayed with a style that is colorful and dynamic but avoids becoming obtrusive. The Ref, 400 watches bring a nostalgic style into 21st Century context.

RGM Reference 400 Automatic Chronograph with orange dial

The effect of this watch is clearly influenced by designs of decades past—the age of racing Cobras, the GT40, and CanAm series come to mind–while the product is distinctly modern. This is ensured by the use of sapphire crystals front & back, anti-reflective coatings and the most up-to-date Valgranges Cal. A07.211 movement.

RGM Reference 400 Automatic Chronograph with blue dial

Watches in the Ref. 400 series are available from RGM immediately. Options include dial color choices (Blue, Black, Silver, Orange), various colors and materials for straps, and the willingness of RGM to create custom versions of their watches for discerning customers.
