Ressence Type 5 AIT Limited Edition

Ressence has created a limited edition of its Type 5 watch in collaboration with AIT (Art In Time) Monaco.

The Type 5 AIT is based on the Ressence TYPE 5 dive watch. Defined by its bold, organic case, oil filled dial, clear legibility and ruggedized bezel.

Ressence Type 5 AIT Limited Edition

The Type 5 AIT watch stands out with its vibrant yellow notes on the dial, markers, and bezel. This exclusive timepiece is limited to 12 pieces. Among these, 11 watches are available exclusively at Art In Time. The 12th watch with a distinctive yellow Ressence logo will be sold at a charity event in September with all proceeds going to the Fondation Prince Albert II de Monaco.

Ressence Type 5 AIT Limited Edition

The case is crafted entirely in grade five titanium, which contributes to its light weight in the hand and on the wrist (with the strap included, the watch weighs just 85 grams). The tapered case has a sandwich-style construction with a two-tone finish, showcasing both polished and satin finishing textures.

Ressence Type 5 AIT Limited Edition

Dial side, the hours’ disc has a yellow index at the hour that the watch corresponds to. This will be unique to the owner. Below the oil-filled upper chamber is an air-filled lower chamber that houses the bespoke mechanical auto-winding movement. It uses a magnet transmission to drive the discs on the ROCS dial.

Ressence Type 5 AIT Limited Edition

Seven bellows compensate for the expansion and contraction of the oil in the upper chamber as temperatures change. The use of oil cancels out Total Internal Reflection.

Ressence Type 5 AIT Limited Edition

Typically, under water, a traditional diver’s watch needs to be viewed straight on in order to be read properly – otherwise refraction turns the glass into a mirror. The Ressence TYPE 5 is an oil-filled watch, ensuring complete legibility whatever the angle of view.

Ressence Type 5 AIT Limited Edition

The rear-mounted crown deploys the Ressence Compression Lock System (RCLS), a mechanism which closes the gasket sealing of the lower air chamber when the crown is pushed back into its resting position.

Ressence Type 8

Ressence presents Type 8, a hyper-modern timepiece equipped with the brand’s proprietary ROCS display. This new creation will be unveiled at Watches & Wonders in Geneva (March 30th to April 5th 2022).

Ressence Type 8

Representing the sixth distinct family of watches from Ressence, the Type 8 has been designed with the same functional relevance that defines all watches of the brand. This latest model combines clarity, simplicity and ergonomics.

Ressence Type 8

The Type 8 has a sleek, light-weight case made of grade 5 titanium. With the strap included, the watch weighs just 42 grams. The tapered case has a sandwich-style construction with a two-tone finish, showcasing both polished and satin finishing textures. The case has no apparent lugs; instead the overall effect is of one integrated case volume, out of which the strap appears to grow invisibly.

Ressence Type 8

The watch indicates only the hours and minutes. Symbolizing the epitome of simplicity, the domed cobalt blue dial features no texts or numbers. Simple white baton markers present the time with perfect clarity from any angle thanks to the revolutionary Ressence Orbital Convex System (ROCS) display, whereby the dial itself comprises rotating discs set into the same plane. The hands and the hour and minute scales are picked out in blue SuperLuminova for low-light legibility.

Ressence Type 8

The Type 8 will be available worldwide from March 30th 2022 via Ressence’s official retailer network. Its retail price is CHF 12,500.

Ressence Type 3BBB

The recently released Ressence Type 3BBB is the ultimate monochrome execution of the revolutionary oil-filled mechanical watch that first launched in 2013. The name stands for ‘Black, Black, Black’ in reference to the reduced colour palette of the watch. The Type 3BBB will be produced for just one year, ending on December 31st 2022.

Ressence Type 3BBB

Drawing on the inherent qualities of Ressence’s crown-free case design and the edge-to-edge sapphire crystal found on both front and back of the watch, the Type 3BBB resembles a perfectly smooth, black pebble. For the first time in the Type 3 range, the Type 3BBB features a polished black DLC-coated titanium case, to match the glossy sapphire.

Ressence Type 3BBB

For maximum impact, Ressence has made a number of changes to the Type 3 dial. All colours have been removed from the indicators, leaving only white and light grey to contrast with the black background. For a more minimalist approach, the running seconds indicator has been removed, and in a departure from existing Type 3 models, the SuperLuminova has been changed from blue to green.

Ressence Type 3BBB

The shiny, pebble-like appearance of the Type 3BBB is a natural complement for the watch’s unique approach to timekeeping. Ressence’s Orbital Convex System (ROCS) sees the various elements of the dial swirl around each other, given unmatched legibility by the oil-filled chamber between the sapphire crystal and the dial.

Ressence Type 3BBB

The patented ROCS unit, developed in-house by Ressence, is fundamental to the Type 3’s creation. Featuring an ever-changing dial with elements that continually orbit each other, its purpose is a more efficient way of telling time. All information is displayed in a single flat plane, much like words on a piece of paper, making for improved readability. This differs from the approach taken by a traditional watch, where the hands and dial are layered on one another producing an uneven viewing plane.

Composed of 215 parts, the gears in the ROCS calculate the hours, day and date, taking only the minute as a reference from the automatic movement.

Ressence Type 3BBB

On the caseback, the interior of the sapphire has been DLC coated, then engraved with the necessary text, which is painted in high-contrast white.

The Type 3BBB comes on an anthracite ‘honeycomb’ strap, previously found on Ressence’s Type 2A.

Ressence Type 1 Slim DX2 Limited Edition In collaboration with Ahmed Seddiqi & Sons

Ressence, in close collaboration with Ahmed Seddiqi & Sons, the UAE’s leading retailer of luxury watches and jewellery, presents the Type 1 Slim DX2 – a limited edition of the Type 1 Slim.

Celebrating the United Arab Emirates 50th year anniversary, this limited edition marks the second collaboration between Ahmed Seddiqi & Sons and Ressence.

Ressence Type 1 Slim DX2 Limited Edition In collaboration with Ahmed Seddiqi & Sons

Limited to 25 pieces and following in the footsteps of the Type 1 Squared DXB, the Type 1 Slim DX2 draws inspiration from Arabic geometric patterns. This original multi-faceted design creates a unique play of light reflections and depths.

Delicately engraved with polishing diamond burs, the watch sparkles like a diamond would. The dial’s sand colour further anchors the watch in the Arabic world.

Ressence Type 1 Slim DX2 Limited Edition In collaboration with Ahmed Seddiqi & Sons

The watch remains 100% faithful to the functions and movement of the Type 1 Slim. It differs distinctly from the collection in its design. Its case is in polished Grade 5 titanium.

The Ressence Orbital Convex System (ROCS), unique in-house (and patented) module featuring ever changing discs that continually orbits around one another, benefits from another design but also a different surface treatment. The 9 components that make up the dial are finished in sand color PVD.

Ressence Type 1 Slim DX2 Limited Edition In collaboration with Ahmed Seddiqi & Sons

The hands and indexes are white and filled with Superluminova punctuating a decidedly traditional but fresh look. The Type 1 Slim DX2 is manually set via a lever on its case back. The watch has no crown, the winding and setting mechanism being the case-back itself, for better ergonomics and allowing a left-right fit.

Ressence Type 1 Slim Red

Ressence expands its Type 1 collection by presenting the Type 1 Slim Red. Distinguished by a bold red dial and matching rubber strap, this new limited edition watch will only be produced until the end of 2021.

Ressence Type 1 Slim Red watch

The new design marks a significant step for Ressence, which to date has tended to draw from a traditional colour palette for its watches. An exception – and specific inspiration for this new watch – is the red Type 3 ‘MC’, a one-off watch created for the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, in aid of sustainable development, in September 2020.

Ressence Type 1 Slim Red

The Type 1 Slim was first introduced in 2019, as a thinner, more streamlined evolution of the original Type 1.

It is notable not only for its slimmed-down case, which was reduced from 13mm to 11mm thick, but for the move towards an integrated case shape: the case and lugs are milled from one block of grade five titanium for a sleeker, more modern silhouette. In this new Type 1 Slim Red incarnation, that smooth flow from case to strap enhances the impact of the brilliant red.

Ressence Type 1 Slim Red

In keeping with Ressence’s focus on legibility and usability, the red dial is detailed with white hands and pale grey minute markers, with additional rhodium edging to the hour and minute hands for greater definition.

Ressence Type 1 Slim Red

The dial markers are coated with white and red SuperLuminova, lending the watch an intense character in dark conditions. The red and white detailing continues to the caseback, where the watch’s reference number is picked out in red.

Ressence Type 1 Slim Red

Crucial to the Type 1 Slim’s identity is its smooth, pebble-like feel in the hand, achieved by a domed sapphire crystal that stretches right to the very edge of the 42mm case.

Ressence Type 1 Slim Red

The watch has no crown, instead being wound and adjusted by a recessed lever that flips out from the caseback; this improves ergonomics, making the watch equally wearable on the right or the left wrist, as well as fostering a more engaging bond between the wearer and the mechanical movement of the watch. Adding to the versatile, comfortable nature of the Type 1 Slim, this is the first time the watch has been offered only on a rubber strap.

Ressence Type 1 Slim Red watch wrist shot

Like the Type 1 before it, and in common with its sibling, the Type 1 Squared, the Type 1 Slim uses the Ressence Orbital Convex System (ROCS) to display the time. This revolutionary mechanism is central to Ressence’s quest to improve on the traditional mechanical watch; it replaces the static, multi-layered dial and hands with a display where hours, minutes and seconds orbit each other in a single plane.

This unique idea improves legibility, displaying time in a more efficient manner – as if animated on a single sheet of paper.

Ressence Type 1 Slim Red

The ROCS system, comprising a total of 107 parts, is driven by the minutes axle of an automatic movement, beating at 28,800 vph with 36 hours of power reserve.

Ressence Type 2N ‘Night Blue’

Unveiled at Watches & Wonders 2021 event, the Type 2N ‘Night Blue’ is a latest addition to the Ressence Type 2 collection.

Ressence Type 2N ‘Night Blue’

The Type 2N ‘Night Blue’ is the third watch in the Type 2 range, joining the existing ‘Grey’ and ‘Anthracite’ references. Cased in polished grade-five titanium, and with subtly updated colours for the dial typography to match the rich shade of blue, the Type 2N is the most refined and elegant iteration of the Type 2 design.

Ressence Type 2N ‘Night Blue’

The Type 2 was first introduced in 2018 as a concept and entered full production the following year, when it made watchmaking history for its use of Ressence’s patented e-Crown functionality.

Ressence Type 2N ‘Night Blue’

The success of the e-Crown relies on the harmonious integration of mechanical and electronic elements to ensure that at an instant’s touch, your watch will always be correctly set.  The Type 2N combines the beauty and charm of traditional mechanical watchmaking with the reliability of modern technology, and provides a new vision for fine watchmaking in a digital age.

Ressence Type 2N ‘Night Blue’

Like all Ressence watches, the Type 2N features a lever set into the caseback which is used to manually set the time. With the use of the e-Crown, which is controlled by tapping on the watch’s crystal, you can ‘store’ the time once set. From now on, no matter how long the watch is left without running, a double tap on the crystal will return it to the correct time.

Ressence Type 2N ‘Night Blue’

The system is able to detect when the watch is no longer being worn, and will stop the movement before it exhausts its power reserve, ready to be re-started when you pick it up again. This means you should never need to wind or set the watch again.

Ressence Type 2N ‘Night Blue’

The e-Crown also allows a second time zone to be stored, and is equipped with a Bluetooth module to allow control of the time via a smartphone app – particularly useful for frequent travellers. The watch remains entirely independent of the phone, however, and can function without engaging the e-Crown at all. Each of the four e-Crown modes are accessed via tapping the crystal and indicated by a coloured subdial (Time zone 1: green, time zone 2: yellow, Bluetooth app communication: blue and e-Crown off: white arrow).

Ressence Type 2N ‘Night Blue’

The Type 2’s e-Crown system is powered by light, thanks to an array of photovoltaic cells concealed beneath the dial, ensuring that its smart functions are as self-sustaining and reliable as the automatic calibre at the heart of the watch.

Ressence Type 2N ‘Night Blue’

The Type 2 followed in the footsteps of Ressence’s original design, the Type 1, which introduced the ROCS mechanism and revolutionised the display of information on a watch dial. For the first time, the hours, minutes and seconds were presented in the same flat plane, making it easier and more intuitive to read the time. This was thanks to the ROCS (Ressence Orbital Convex System), an invention years in the making that allows each ‘hand’ to orbit each other in an ever-changing dial, while always maintaining the correct angle between hours and minutes.

Ressence Type 5X Limited Edition

The new Type 5X limited edition timepiece belongs to the brand’s Collection X, which was introduced in July 2020 with the Type 1 Slim X watch for marking the 10th anniversary of Ressence.

Each of the four watches of the Ressence Collection X is limited to 40 pieces, with the dark olive-green colour being the common thread linking all pieces.

Ressence Type 5X Limited Edition

The Type 5X watch is a result of collaboration with Eugenio Amos, founder of Automobili Amos. A speed-loving racing driver and eclectic collector, Eugenio is a visionary entrepreneur. One of his outstanding creations is the Lancia Delta Futurista that made its debut in 2018 at the Grand Basel motor show.

Automobili Amos Lancia Delta Futurista
Automobili Amos Lancia Delta Futurista

Costing a whopping $350,000, this car is the modern interpretation of the iconic Lancia Delta Integrale produced by Italian automobile manufacturer Lancia. The Futurista utilises an original Delta chassis as a base and is completed with state-of-the-art technology and design practices.

The collaboration started in the form of a question when Eugenio Amos came to visit the Ressence studio in Antwerp. The mission was to make a genuine driver watch that has a function related to time and cars.

Ressence Type 5X Limited Edition

The watch is made of grade 5 titanium. The bezel on the Type 5X is a prominent part of the design. The markings on the bezel are original and directly related to the collaboration with Automobili Amos and the functioning of the turbos.

Ressence Type 5X Limited Edition

Its unidirectional bezel is divided into two distinct parts. The first one is dedicated to the warm-up of the engine (15min) – the S stands for Start, D for Drive and R for Race – while the other one is dedicated to the cooling of the Turbos (10 min).

Ressence Type 5X Limited Edition

The dial and sub dials are inspired by the Lancia Delta Futurista graphics. With the addition of new colours such as red and yellow, the olive-green softens and darkens in the Type 5X with the presence of oil.

Ressence Type 5X Limited Edition

On the steering wheel of the Lancia Delta Futurista, you find the so-called “levati” button. The Type 5X is already highly legible from low angles thanks to the oil but the levati rubber accessory adds a new dimension of function, enabling the driver to wear his watch on the side of his wrist.

Ressence Type 5X Limited Edition

This Limited Edition Type 5X also comes with two straps as standard. One being made by the same Alacantara found in the Lancia Futurista and a second in green rubber.

Ressence Type 5X Limited Edition

The Type 5X limited edition watch is equipped with the proprietary Ressence Orbital Convex System, powered by a specially customised 2824/2 calibre. The winding and time setting controls of the watch are located on the case back side.

Ressence Type 3MC Unique Piece in collaboration with ART IN TIME Watch Gallery, Monaco

Belgian luxury watch brand Ressence created a unique timepiece in collaboration with ART IN TIME watch gallery, MONACO.

Ressence Type 3MC Unique Piece in collaboration with ART IN TIME Watch Gallery, Monaco

ART IN TIME is a prestige watch gallery in Monaco bringing together top-level manufacturers who share the same values: creativity, exclusivity, and independence. The concept was devised by Karl-Friedrich Scheufele, President of Chronométrie Ferdinand Berthoud. Right from the outset, he sought to add a philanthropic dimension to the gallery. From this emerged the idea of making unique pieces available from time to time, only at ART IN TIME, with part of the proceeds dedicated to supporting local concerns.

The first such partnership resulted in a piece by Urwerk, unveiled in the first half of 2020; now, a second timepiece has been produced, this time by independent watchmakers Ressence. It too will be helping to fund a local initiative: the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation.

Ressence Type 3MC Unique Piece in collaboration with ART IN TIME Watch Gallery, Monaco

Named Type 3MC, this model sports a red dial, used for the very first time here. Red is the colour of the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation; the Ressence Type 3MC features the perfectly uniform shade in question on the dial and on the rear, where a special‘1/1’ inscription denotes that it is a unique piece.

Ressence Type 3MC Unique Piece in collaboration with ART IN TIME Watch Gallery, Monaco

The choice of the Type 3 to go with this colour was carefully thought-out. The model in question is the only one in the world with an oil-filled dial. Thanks to this scientific and technical feat, the Type 3 harnesses refracted light to give the dial a perfectly even, smooth appearance. Reflections and protrusions disappear, making the display highly readable.

The indications are arranged in keeping with Ressence’s distinctive style, with discs and dials rotating around each other. This makes reading the time clearer; the information is displayed on a single plane, like words written on a page, allowing it to be understood intuitively, in two dimensions.

Collection X marks the first 10 years of Ressence and for this series, the award-winning brand created a dedicated symbol that is the fusion of an X, or ten in Latin, and an hourglass. It replaces the 10-hour marker on the hour disc of the Type 1 Slim X. Each of the four watches of the Collection X is limited to 40 pieces and shares the main dark olive-green colour.

Ressence Type 1 Slim X Limited Edition

Featuring the emblematic ever-changing dial, the Type 1 Slim X’s discs have been given a subtle, but focussed handmade makeover.

Ressence Type 1 Slim X Limited Edition

Inside this timepiece is the in-house developed and patented Ressence Orbital Convex System (ROCS), which features discs that continually orbit around one another. This innovative system is driven by the minute axle of a specially customised ETA 2892/A automatic movement.

Ressence Type 1 Slim X Limited Edition

When the Type 1 Slim X watch indicates midnight or midday, the dark olive-green dial is equally divided into two separate finishes; matte on one half and circular on the other half. In a playful way, the different finishes reinterpret the colour as the light hits the surface.

Ressence Type 1 Slim X Limited Edition

On the minute and the hour discs, the two finishes are a graphical extension of the hands. The watch is also organic in its form, with tactile curves and domed sapphire glass extending to the very edge of the case, making the watch more sapphire than metal.

Ressence Type 1 Slim X Limited Edition

The Type 1 Slim X is manually set via a lever on its case back. The watch has no crown, the winding and setting mechanism being the case-back itself, for better ergonomics and allowing a left-right fit.

Ressence Type 1DXB – Limited Edition Watch Created in Collaboration with Ahmed Seddiqi & Sons, UAE

In close collaboration with Ahmed Seddiqi & Sons, the UAE’s leading retailer of luxury watches and jewellery, Ressence announces the release of the Type 1 DXB – a limited edition of the Type 1 Squared.

Ressence Type 1DXB - Limited Edition Watch Created in Collaboration with Ahmed Seddiqi & Sons, UAE

Limited to 19 pieces, Type 1DXB draws inspiration from Arabic geometric patterns, believed to unveil the underlying reality to the viewer. This traditional design composes with natural light and creates unique shadow play. It is an Arabic take on skeleton dials. The watch remains 100% faithful to the functions and movement of its parent, the Type 1 Squared.

Ressence Type 1DXB - Limited Edition Watch Created in Collaboration with Ahmed Seddiqi & Sons, UAE

It differs distinctly from the collection both in its design and in its material though. Unlike the other Type 1 Squared the case is not made of stainless steel. Its case is in polished Grade 5 titanium, with a satin finish back.

Ressence Type 5N

The Ressence Type 5N is a new example of the oil-filled Type 5 watch featuring a deep night blue dial.

The genesis of the Type 5N starts with the Ressence Orbital Convex System (ROCS), the unique in-house developed (and patented) horological unit featuring an ever changing dial that continually orbit around one another. The purpose is a more efficient way of telling time. Information is displayed on a single surface, much like words on a piece of paper, making for improved readability.

This differs than that of a traditional watch, where the hands and dial are layered on one another producing an uneven viewing plane. Composed of 142 parts, the gears in the ROCS calculates the hours, runner (90 seconds) taking only the minute as a reference from the automatic movement.

First debuted in 2015, the Type 5 is the first mechanical watch to be perfectly readable underwater regardless of the viewing angle. A true achievement in Fine Watchmaking, the Type 5N is designed with a “water drop” dial effect in order to achieve crystal-clear dial legibility for the wearer. To accomplish this, Ressence uses applied science.

Because oil and glass share very similar responses to light refraction, the eye is tricked into momentarily losing its depth perception. The result is that the watch’s dial seems ever closer, vision of it apparently unimpeded by glass at all. The Type 5 builds upon that achievement by canceling out what is known as Total Internal Reflection. Typically, under water, a traditional diver’s watch needs to be viewed straight on in order to be read properly – otherwise refraction turns the glass into a mirror. The use of oil ensures complete legibility whatever the angle of view.

The TYPE 5N meets the requirements of ISO 6425 and is able to withstand extreme conditions. The creation of this world-proof watch was therefore not without its challenges – allowing to further position Ressence at the forefront of 21st century watchmaking. Ressence ingeniously designed a two-chamber system inside the Type 5 to keep the mechanical movement and oil separate. The lower chamber is comprised of the customized automatic movement and the upper chamber is hermetically-sealed with the ROCS display module bathing in 37.5ml of oil.

As such with the two-chamber system, there is no direct mechanical link between the watch’s movement and the ROCS. To accommodate this, the Type 5N uses a magnetic transmission to tie the modules together. This is done by connecting several micro-magnets to each other and positioning them in both the oil-filled upper chamber and the dry lower chamber. In order to compensate for oil volume fluctuation (dependent on temperature), the watch is fitted with a system of seven small bellows that expand and contract dependent on the increase and decrease of the oil’s volume. For a charming visual cue – the system is indirectly connected to the temperature gauge on the dial so the user can see a representation of the bellows capacity in action.

Intuitive in viewing and motion, understated in its color scheme, the Type 5N is a perfect example of 21st century watchmaking according to Ressence. The Type 5N eliminates visual complexities and superfluous elements to create a timeless diving watch that is functional and inspires the imagination.

Ressence Type 1 Slim

The Type 1 Slim is a new thinner version of the original Ressence Type 1 watch.

The genesis of the Type 1 Slim starts with the Ressence Orbital Convex System (ROCS), the unique in-house developed (and patented) horological unit featuring an ever-changing dial that continually orbit around one another.

The purpose is a more efficient way of telling time. Information is displayed on a single surface, much like words on a piece of paper, making for improved readability. This differs than that of a traditional watch, where the hands and dial are layered on one another producing an uneven viewing plane. Composed of 107 parts, the gears in the ROCS calculate the hours and day, taking only the minute as a reference from the movement.

First debuted in 2014, the Type 1 is still Ressence’s most stripped back watch to date. It differs distinctly from the rest of the collection in its visual balance of simplicity and complexity, one that ensures its aesthetic only continues to enrich over the years. The new case design is not a revolution but rather an evolution. Not only it is slimmer (11mm thick) – compared to the previous generation – but also resolutely more modern with its seemingly integrated strap. Lugs and case are in fact milled in one action from the same grade 5 titanium block.

The Type 1 Slim is manually set via a lever on its case back. The watch has no crown, the winding and setting mechanism being the case-back itself, for better ergonomics and allowing a left-right fit. It is all tactile curves, the domed sapphire glass extending to the very edge of the case – making the watch more sapphire than metal for greater readability.

Ressence Type 3W – The First Oil-Filled Mechanical Watch with a White Dial

Ressence Type 3W is the first ever white dial in a mechanical oil filled timepiece.

The genesis of the Type 3 starts with the Ressence Orbital Convex System (ROCS), the unique in-house developed (and patented) horological unit featuring an ever-changing dial that continually orbit around one another. The purpose is a more efficient way of telling time. Information is displayed on a single surface, much like words on a piece of paper, making for improved readability.

This differs than that of a traditional watch, where the hands and dial are layered on one another producing an uneven viewing plane. Composed of 215 parts, the gears in the ROCS calculates the hours, day and date, taking only the minute as a reference from the automatic movement.

First debuted in 2013, the Type 3 is the first ever oil-filled mechanical watch. A true achievement in Fine Watchmaking, the Type 3 is designed with a “water drop” dial effect in order to achieve crystal clear dial legibility for the wearer. To accomplish this, Ressence uses applied science. Because oil and glass share very similar responses to light refraction, the eye is tricked into momentarily losing its depth perception. The result is that the watch’s dial seems ever closer, vision of it apparently unimpeded by glass at all.

Ressence Type 3W - The First Oil-Filled Mechanical Watch with a White Dial

The Type 3W builds upon that achievement by featuring the first ever white dial in an oil filled timepiece; invoking a freshness, clarity and sense of modernity that has become synonymous with the brand. The Type 3W contrasts naturally with the iconic black dial of the original Type 3.

Ressence ingeniously designed a two-chamber system inside the Type 3 to keep the mechanical movement and oil separate. The lower chamber is comprised of the customized automatic movement and the upper chamber is hermetically-sealed with the ROCS display module bathing in 35.7ml of oil.

As such with the two-chamber system, there is no direct mechanical link between the watch’s movement and the ROCS. To accommodate this, the Type 3W uses a magnetic transmission to tie the modules together.

Ressence Type 3W - The First Oil-Filled Mechanical Watch with a White Dial

For a charming visual cue – the system is indirectly connected to the temperature gauge on the dial so the user can see a representation of the bellows capacity in action. The rotating, white finished discs provide a striking visual contrast to the black and gray indications (filled with extra strong Super-LumiNova®), exhibiting a contemporary sensibility.

Ressence Type 2 – The First Mechanical Watch with a Smart Crown

The new Type 2 watch from Ressence is the first mechanical wrist watch with a smart crown, the e-Crown®.

The genesis of the Type 2 starts with the Ressence Orbital Convex System (ROCS), the unique in-house developed (and patented) horological unit featuring an ever-changing dial that continually orbit around one another. The purpose is a more efficient way of telling time. Information is displayed on a single surface, much like words on a piece of paper, making for improved readability.

Ressence Type 2 - The First Mechanical Watch with a Smart Crown

This differs than that of a traditional watch, where the hands and dial are layered on one another producing an uneven viewing plane.

Building on the foundation of the ROCS, the next step for Ressence in the innovation of the wrist watch is the creation of the smart e-Crown®, featured on the Type 2. For over the past century and a half, the watch’s crown was the primary mechanism to wind and set the time. This was revolutionary during its day, however in order to move watchmaking into the 21st century, a new idea was needed and e-Crown® was born.

Ressence Type 2 - The First Mechanical Watch with a Smart Crown

e-Crown® automatically sets and adjusts the Type 2 to the right time when needed. Driven by user experience, it combines the reliability of electronics with the emotion and beauty of mechanical engineering. Since the quartz revolution in the 1970’s, the Fine Watchmaking industry has seen electronics as a threat, but Ressence’s patented smart crown technology offers a new dimension to Fine Watchmaking and embraces the digital native generation.

Ressence Type 2 - The First Mechanical Watch with a Smart Crown

e-Crown® is activated and controlled by tapping the crystal on the dial of the Type 2, offering a new tactile experience and user-friendliness to mechanical watches. Visually, it is represented on the dial by the selector sub disc and its four modes (time zone 1, time zone 2, app and e-Crown off).

The Type 2 uses light energy to power the e-Crown®. Photovoltaic cells (some hidden behind 10 micro-shutters on the dial) will use outside light as an energy source making the watch self sufficient.

The Type 2 is manually set via the lever on its case back. By double tapping the crystal, the manually set time is digitally registered by e-Crown®. There is no need to think about checking and adjusting the watch anymore, e-Crown® does it automatically. Even after three months of inactivity, once the watch is fastened to the wrist and the wearer taps the crystal, e-Crown® will automatically set it to the right time.

How to register multiple time zones on the Type 2?
For added travel convenience, e-Crown® can register two time zones. Set the second time zone the same way as the first one and switch from one to another via the mode selector on the dial.

How to use the app to set the time of the Type 2?
Ressence developed the e-Crown® app to reach an unseen level of convenience and modernity. Using Bluetooth to connect with the Type 2, the app displays a scroll down list of cities to choose from for both time zones to send directly to the smart crown.

Why do I not need to wind the Type 2 anymore?
Type 2 has a power saving function. When the watch is not on your wrist for more than 12 hours, eCrown® will automatically hold the barrel of the mechanical movement. When putting the watch back on your wrist, e-Crown® will release the barrel and Type 2 will start running again by double tapping the sapphire.

How does the Type 2 know the correct time?
Type 2 is not radio-controlled. When you set the watch via the lever or via the e-Crown® app, time is also registered digitally inside the watch.

RESSENCE

Founded in 2010 by Benoît Mintiens, RESSENCE is a unique horological start-up creating innovative mechanical fine-watches.

RESSENCE represents an independent way of thinking about fine watchmaking – no less expertly hand-crafted, but with an industrial design philosophy that seeks to be progressive with a clear, graphic aesthetic that is decidedly 21st century.

RESSENCE TYPE 1

RESSENCE’s starting point is the deconstruction of the traditional watch in order to express Time in the purest possible way. Its original concept, summed up by its motto #BEYONDHANDS, is to replace the conventional horological hands with rotating discs for an intuitive reading of the Time.

All watches share the same inimitable DNA. Their sub-dials continually revolve, as does the main disc into which they are set – like moons in orbit around a planet. This means that the watch’s uncluttered dial is ever-changing – as is everything in Time.

RESSENCE TYPE 3

Quality and excellence is an imperative as a RESSENCE is the result of years of research and development. Each completed watch undergoes testing in RESSENCE’s headquarters to its own R500H accreditation standards – this implies 500 hours of close examination across six stringent criteria.

Thanks to its freedom to think differently, RESSENCE has already reached international recognition: Among others, Horological Revelation by GPHG in 2013 and Design Star by Watchstars in 2015. In 2016, the Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie (FHH) certified RESSENCE as one of the 64 brands in the world belonging within the perimeter of Haute Horlogerie.

RESSENCE TYPE  5

RESSENCE MICROMECHANICAL INNOVATIONS

RESSENCE watches have so far capitalised on 6 technical solutions based on physical principles. Each of these innovations, never before seen in watchmaking, contribute to the same product relevance: great readability and high user experience.

1. DISPLAY BY DISCS (all models)

It was in 2011 on the ZERO SERIES watches that RESSENCE unveiled for the first time the patented invention on which rests its new expression of Time: ROCS which stands for Ressence Orbital Convex System. Fully designed and developed in-house, this unique horological complication is composed of co-planar discs and rings of different sizes, curved to match the bend of the glass that covers them. Recto, the discs create a flush dial. Verso, they serve as a platina and bridges to the watch mechanism with a large number of components – from 107 components for the basic version (ROCS 1) up to 215 components for the ROCS 3 which drives a six-fold display complication.

Each of the time indications of the RESSENCE watches is generated by the ROCS from a single piece of information provided by the automatic base movement: the minute. With the ROCS, time-information is displayed on a single surface, both eyes see a same image (like words on a sheet of paper), while on a traditional watch, where the hands and dial are superposed, the projected image is different for each of the two eyes because of its 3D nature. The choice to focuson the minute disc is also dictated by a concern for legibility. In most cases, this is the information you first look for when checking your watch. Every minute that passes, you observe a different dial.

2. NO CROWN (all models)

In the pursuit of improved ergonomics, the fluid organic design of the RESSENCE watches becomes imperative in obtaining a completely sleek surface. The case is virtually invisible and the crown has disappeared from the scene. Right and left-handers are now equally well-served. On TYPE 1, TYPE 3 and TYPE 5 the crown is replaced by an alternative of ingenious simplicity, namely, the rotating back of the watch made of sapphire crystal, which assumes the functions of manual winding and time setting. Behind the easy setup/winding system also lies the logical principle that the watch only needs to be set when it has stopped. Simply setting the watch winds it at the same time.

3. THE “WATER DROP” EFFECT (TYPE 3, TYPE 5)

For the first time in the history of watchmaking, RESSENCE introduces a liquid inside a mechanical watch. On the TYPE 3 and TYPE 5, the entire upper part containing the ROCS is immersed in 35 ml of oil. Invisible to the eye, the fluid eliminates the refraction between the glass and the dial. The multiple components of the ROCS are permanently lubricated and are relatively lighter since, according to Archimedes’ Principle, they are suspended in liquid. The use of oil improves chronometry in addition to readability.

The presence of the oil under the glass of the watch creates a never before seen “drop of water” effect. Regardless of the angle at which the dial is viewed, its readability is optimal, even underwater (this is a world premiere for a mechanical watch). On the TYPE 5 the oil also guarantees protection against overpressure equivalent to that of a tool watch without the need to reinforce the case and use a thicker glass.

4. BELLOW SYSTEM (TYPE 3, TYPE 5)

The volume of oil in the upper part of TYPE 3 and TYPE 5 varies depending on the ambient temperature. RESSENCE has developed a self-compensation system operating in the range of -10 to +60 degrees Celsius (14°F to 140°F) (while the Swiss watchmaking standard requires a watch to be able to withstand a range of +10 to +40 degrees Celsius). The system consists of a series of 7 small bellows which retreat when the oil expands under the effect of heat, or compensate the contraction of the oil under the effect of cooling.

The oil volume self-compensation system prevents the formation of an air bubble on the surface of the dial. It is indirectly connected to the temperature gauge of the oil present on the dial. The latter can therefore be seen as a graphical and mechanical representation of the position of the bellows. It should be noted that temperature variations do not affect the correct operation of the watch.

5. MAGNETIC TRANSMISSION (TYPE 3, TYPE 5)

To maintain the oil-filled upper part of the watch leak free, the horological complication module, ROCS, is hermetically separated from the automatic base movement by a Grade 5 Titanium membrane. Since the physical connection between the two is no longer possible, RESSENCE has developed an ingenious device based on magnetism, with micro magnets placed on either side of the membrane.

In addition to this system RESSENCE has set up a series of extra protections of the regulating organ against the effects of magnetism (using magnetic conductors and shielding). The guarantee of perfect chronometry under all circumstances. (tested in laboratories, the residual magnetic fields are practically equal to earth magnetism)

6. SHOCK ABSORBER (TYPE 5)

The magnetic transmission from the base movement to the ROCS ensures that in the event of a significant lateral shock, the micro magnets located on either side of the membrane can momentarily decouple. To compensate for this phenomenon, on its TYPE 5, RESSENCE has introduced a hydraulic shock absorber. It is a small disk that is an integral part of the ROCS 5 the underside of which has blades. Equipped with a gear ratio 1/40, it starts to turn very quickly in the event of a shock and acts like a turbine. The oil is sucked in and can only escape by the microscopic space left between the discs. The whole ROCS is then slowed, which prevents it from being disconnected from the base movement. The shock absorber is manifested visually by the rapid rotation of the runner disc integrated in the dial.

Without any real consequence in normal use, a brief decoupling of the mechanism is not conceivable on a diving watch for the obvious safety reason of the need to indicate to the wearer the precise duration of the time spent under water.

About Benoît Mintiens

Born in Belgium, Benoît Mintiens, our founder and creative mind, dreamed as a child to be a naval engineer but decided on a career as an industrial designer. He graduated in Industrial Design in Antwerp in 1998 and took up the position of Senior Consultant at Antwerp design firm Enthoven & Associates. While he was working there, he also gained his MBA at Vlerick Business School in 2003. He had a portfolio of designs to his credit – high-speed trains, aircraft cabins, medical devices, leather goods and even hunting guns before he ever designed a watch.

Benoît had always been attracted to the idea of creating a new kind of watch. Around 2004, a friend presented him with an opportunity to do just that when he asked him to create an original design for a men’s watch featuring as many diamonds as possible. Benoît chose to use diamonds for their functional attributes and in particular their refractive qualities. But while he was working on a prototype, another brand launched a model based on a similar idea to his own, and Benoît’s design was put on hold. His appetite for watch design had been whetted and in 2009 Benoît finished designing his first watch, which included RESSENCE’s now iconic patented rotating discs. Benoît’s approach to fine-watchmaking is entirely fresh and undeniably contemporary.

RESSENCE TYPE 12 “Squared”

Founded by industrial designer Benoît Mintiens, the award winning luxury watch brand RESSENCE is presenting TYPE 12 “Squared”, a cushion shaped classic dress watch featuring the in-house developed ROCS complication.

Less “dematerialised” than the other models in the collection, the TYPE 12 subtly reintroduces a few classic watch codes for a more assertive wrist presence. Thinner and slightly smaller than the other RESSENCE watches, this new Dress Watch plays the mix with proposals of exclusive straps for both men and women.

While remaining faithful to the DNA of RESSENCE, the TYPE 12 differs distinctly from the rest of the collection both in its design and in its material. Borne from the intersection of 6 spheres, it has a cushion shape case. It is also distinguished by its integrated lugs and an interchangeable bracelet system inherited from the TYPE 3.

Unlike the other RESSENCE watches, the TYPE 12 is not made of Grade 5 Titanium. Its case is in polished stainless steel, with a satin finish back. This case is thinner, due to the absence of the sapphire case back acting as a crown. Instead, there is a small retractable lever, the handling of which adds a new visual and physical effect. When setting the time, the rotation of the lever corresponds exactly to the movement of the discs on the dial in a ratio of 1 to 1. An up-to-date reminder of the key once used to wind clocks, watches and mechanical toys.

Finally, the in-house complication ROCS 1 has been updated with a user-friendly quick day setting. This technical evolution is also available on the original TYPE 1 models.

The RESSENCE TYPE 12 is available in 4 dial versions: Silver, Ruthenium, Night Blue and Champagne. It is produced in an unlimited but numbered edition.

RESSENCE TYPE 5

The TYPE 5 is an evolution of the RESSENCE species – a natural continuation of its TYPE 1 and TYPE 3 and their ground-breaking expressions of time. Indeed, TYPE 5 is the first mechanical watch to be perfectly readable underwater regardless of the viewing angle. It is the diving watch whose ultimate legibility does not sacrifice the pleasures of a traditional mechanism.

As is typical of RESSENCE watches, the TYPE 5 uses advanced materials and design as well as the company’s signature display aesthetic to create a watch at the leading edge of horological innovation. And then some: the TYPE 5 is designed to meet the ISO 6425 standards and able to withstand extreme conditions – but to do so with the modernist elegance characteristic of RESSENCE.

The organic design of the TYPE 5 takes its inspiration from nature, specifically sea turtles. Their distinct aqua-dynamic shape means they are best able to propel themselves easily through the water – so what better shape too for an amphibious watch, right down to its seamlessly integrated uni-directional bezel? The TYPE 5 is made from titanium too, ensuring that it is also lightweight – just 87g – and extremely comfortable to wear.

The TYPE 5 is an additional example of RESSENCE’s contemporary haute horlogerie, blending industrial design and micro-mechanical innovation. It also exhibits the brand’s distinctively unique means of display – without the use of traditional hands. Rather, the hours, seconds and the oil temperature gauge sit in revolving discs, which in turn orbit inside the main disc of the minute display, which itself is continuously revolving – so this patented orbital display system is an integral part of the dial.

The complication managing this refined mechanism – the Ressence Orbital Convex System, or ROCS – is a first in the history of watchmaking. It employs a specially-modified automatic calibre that gives the minutes, and hence the base calculation of time, from which is extrapolated all the other temporal indications on the dial.

RESSENCE has always wanted its TYPE 5 to be a diving watch comparable in performance to any on the market. But it also wanted the TYPE 5 to be a timepiece that was wearable every day, out of the water. So rather than protecting the watch against the pressures of the depths by using an over-sized case and thick glass, RESSENCE has employed a creative solution. The complete ROCS – all 142 components, including the dial – is immersed in 37.5ml of oil.

This is a world first for a mechanical watch. And it’s been done with good reason. Since the laws of hydraulics state that a liquid cannot be compressed, this oil compensates for pressure underwater. And there are other advantages too: the oil keeps those components constantly lubricated. And since they are suspended in a liquid, they are lighter and hence require less power to move, which in turn improves time-keeping. The result is a watch both more ergonomic and considerably lighter than traditional diver’s pieces too.

There is one more advantage to the use of oil, crucial to the success of a diver’s watch. It cancels out what is known as Total Internal Reflection. Typically, when under the water, a traditional diver’s watch needs to be viewed straight on in order to be read properly -otherwise refraction turns the glass into a mirror. But not with an oil-filled watch: this gives it complete legibility whatever the angle of view.

The TYPE 5’s internal architecture comprises two halves – the upper chamber, comprising the ROCS 5, filled with oil; and a lower, dry chamber containing the movement, divided from the upper by way of a grade 5 titanium, hermetically-sealed membrane.

To transmit the primary minute information from the movement to the ROCS, the TYPE 5 ingeniously uses connected micro magnets – while a number of protective measures ensure the magnetic fields these create do no harm to the regulator. It is another nod to TYPE 5’s inspiration of the sea turtle: much like the watch uses the natural phenomena that are magnetic fields to move, so sea turtles use them to find their way through the oceans.

TYPE 5 cleverly compensates the use of oil, as its volume in the watch will fluctuate with temperature. The watch is therefore fitted with a system of seven small bellows. These compress when, with rising temperature, the oil volume increases, or expand if the temperature drops and the volume decreases – the result perfectly stabilises the fit of the oil within the watch. The system is directly connected to the oil temperature gauge on the dial -so the TYPE 5 owner can see a representation of the bellows capacity in action.

Like RESSENCE’s other models, the Type 5 has no crown – rather, the case-back is used both for winding and setting the time of the watch. But, to ensure maximum water-resistance, a new case-back has been specially developed for the TYPE 5. Dubbed the Ressence Compression Lock System, or RCLS, it has a system for the locking and compression of the gasket, with two positions, ‘lock’ and ‘set’.

The TYPE 5 is available in two executions:
-TYPE 5B, black dial and polished/satin titanium finish.
-TYPE 5BB “all black”, a stealth version with a black DLC coating that amplifies the visual impact of the oil-filled black dial. Dial and case become one.

RESSENCE TYPE 3 New Version (TYPE 3N, Blue Dial)

Winner of the Horological Revelation award at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève in 2013, the TYPE 3 best represents RESSENCE’s fine-watchmaking philosophy – a balance of technological innovation, mechanical complexity and timeless design. The TYPE 3 represents an intellectual approach born of the key tenets of industrial design and aiming towards the deconstruction of the traditional watch. This approach is characterised by the elimination of both standard watch hands and crown – the entire case back is used to wind and set the mechanism – the minimization of the case (2mm thick) and the maximization of legibility thanks to oil filled technology. For 2016 RESSENCE offers a new version of this iconic model with a deep blue dial. The colour of the night sky is a nod towards its distinctive display comprising several discs – rotating like moons in orbit around a planet.

The TYPE 3 builds on the unique patented complication RESSENCE introduced in 2010 with its ZERO SERIES. The ROCS, or Ressence Orbital Convex System, initiated a new, more intuitive way of reading the time without the use of traditional hands. Rather sub-dial discs continually revolve, as does the main disc into which they are set. They are an integral part of the curved dial and their graphs appear to be projected onto the top crystal as if onto a screen.

The ROCS employs a specially modified automatic caliber that gives the minutes, and hence the base calculation of time, from which is extrapolated all the other temporal indications. The TYPE 3 is fitted with the most advanced version of ROCS to date amounting to a six-part display complication: hours, minutes, runner, day of the week, date and oil temperature. It comprises 215 parts, including 44 gears and 47 jewels. All components, except the wheels, are made from grade 5 titanium. This ensures extreme durability and lightness – in all the TYPE 3 weighs just 79 grams -while also protecting the movement from the negative effects of magnetism.

RESSENCE introduced its oil-filled technology with the TYPE 3, a true world first in mechanical horology. The entire upper half is filled with 35.7 ml of oil to obtain a never-before-seen visual effect – as if the dial was seen through a drop of water. One result is superior legibility. Refraction typically distorts perception. Here, because oil and glass share very similar responses to refraction, the eye is tricked into momentarily losing its depth perception. The result is that the watch’s dial seems ever closer, vision of it apparently unimpeded by glass at all.

TYPE 3 cleverly compensates for the fact that the oil’s volume in the watch will fluctuate with temperature. The watch is therefore fitted with a system of seven small bellows. These compress when, with rising temperature, the oil volume increases, or expand if the temperature drops and the volume decreases – the result perfectly stabilises the fit of the oil within the watch. The system is indirectly connected to the oil temperature gauge on the dial – so the TYPE 3 owner can see a representation of the bellows capacity in action.

As the ROCS is physically separated from the rest of the watch – because it is suspended in oil – RESSENCE developed a unique magnetic transmission. Several micro magnets, connected to each other, are positioned inside the oil-filled upper half and the dry lower half. That way the minute information can be transmitted from the specially modified caliber to the ROCS even if the magnets are separated by a titanium grade 5 membrane. The use of super conductors and the provision of a shield fully protect this clever system from any negative effects of magnetism.

The TYPE 3’s case comprises not one but two curved sapphire crystal glasses connected by a 2mm wide grade 5 titanium band. As a consequence of this curvature, the watch sits only on the middle of the wrist which, together with the watch’s lightweight character, ensures great comfort for the wearer.

Characteristic of RESSENCE design, the lack of a crown also contributes to this exemplary ease of wear. The entire sapphire case-back fulfils the winding and setting functions of the crown.

TYPE 3N is a blue dial limited edition of 50 pieces.
The current collection includes three versions:
– TYPE 3B – titanium black dial, polished titanium case
– TYPE 3BB “All Black” – titanium black dial, black DLC titanium case

RESSENCE TYPE 1

RESSENCE represents a new way of thinking about fine mechanical watches – no less expertly hand-crafted, but with an industrial design philosophy that seeks to be progressive and a clear, graphic aesthetic that is decidedly 21st century. What really lights up the TYPE 1 is the original thinking behind it. Or rather, the re-thinking that comes with a different perspective.

The watch has no crown, for example, the winding/setting mechanism being the case-back itself, for better ergonomics and allowing a left-right fit. It is all tactile curves, the domed sapphire glass extending to the very edge of the case – making the watch more sapphire than metal, in fact – the lugs seemingly part of the case too, an organic whole. And that’s no illusion – lugs and case are milled in one action from the same grade 5 titanium block.

But, most strikingly, and characteristic of RESSENCE, is the lack of conventional hands. Here the time is displayed via its patented, 107-part Ressence Orbital Convex System (ROCS1) – a complex mechanism driving convex sub-discs that continually revolve, as does the main disc into which they are set, like moons in orbit around a planet.

This allows the curved dial to be set closer to the sapphire glass, which gives a sense of immediacy to the look and aids legibility. It also means that the watch’s uncluttered face is ever-changing – as everything is in time.

For all its seeming simplicity, it can transfix. It’s all about the experience – not an obsession with little cogs and wheels. Indeed, rather than being proudly displayed, the sophisticated mechanics of the operation are hidden away beneath a smooth surface.

RESSENCE TYPE 3 Limited Edition

The Ressence Type 3 transports time from the dial to the crystal. The orbiting indications are bathed in a fluid that refracts light like air does, so the indications appear to be displayed directly onto the sapphire. The high-contrast white indicators against the black dial appear to be projected onto the top crystal as if onto a screen. Type 3 offers a tangible feeling of being able to touch time itself.

RESSENCE TYPE 3 Limited Edition

Discs displaying hours, minutes, seconds and days revolve under the domed sapphire crystal, while the date is read from the perimeter of the dial at 6 o’clock. The indications discs continually revolve, as does the whole dial itself. The face of the watch is constantly changing in the same way that a human face is transformed by each passing emotion.

RESSENCE TYPE 3 Limited Edition

With the Type 3, Benoît Mintiens, the founder of Ressence, concentrates on the user experience rather than on creating a showcase for the workings of a watch. Traditional hands are replaced by convex discs set in a convex dial, providing an abstract representation of pared-down and poetic time. Lines painted on the hours, minutes and seconds discs indicate the time just like traditional hands, but unlike traditional hands, they do not overlap so less space is required between the dial and the crystal.

RESSENCE TYPE 3 Limited Edition

The Type 3 is a mechanical watch; however the illusion of seeing indications appear on the sapphire crystal as if they were on a computer screen is reinforced by the pronounced curve of the glass and a “water drop” effect that accentuates the black/white contrast of the dial.

The indications and their mechanisms are mounted inside a bubble crafted from extremely tough, anti-reflective sapphire crystal. The complication and indications follow the shape of the crystal. The mechanism (28 gears, 57 jewels) is enclosed in an upper compartment filled with a naphtha-type liquid that has a more similar index of refraction to the sapphire crystal than air does.

RESSENCE TYPE 3 Limited Edition

Refraction bends light when it passes from one material to another, e.g. air-to-glass or glass-to-air. With the fluid-filled dial indications, refraction is greatly minimised, which tricks the brain into eliminating the impression of depth. A thermal valve automatically adjusts for any expansion or contraction of the fluid.

An unbroken hermetic titanium membrane between the upper section housing the complication module and indications and the movement prevents any physical connection, so the information is transmitted magnetically. The automatic winding movement is protected by a Faraday cage to minimise the effects of magnetic fields on timing.

RESSENCE TYPE 3 Limited Edition

The name Ressence is a portmanteau assimilating the words renaissance and essence, and stands for the rebirth of what is essential to a watch, to displaying time. Ressence’s quest for “the essential”, which began with the replacement of traditional hands by flat discs, has taken another step forward in the Type 3 with the absence of a crown as well. The complete sapphire case back rotates and takes the role of the crown. A gravitational gearing system allows the indications to be adjusted separately: with the dials facing up, it is possible to change the time and date; with the back up, the watch can be wound.

Like the dial side, the back is curved convexly so that its centre touches the wrist between the bones, ensuring that the Type 3 is a very comfortable watch to wear. The Ressence Type 3 is a limited edition of 50 pieces.

RESSENCE TYPE 3

One of the most striking features of the Type 3 is its surface time display that, while not using traditional hands, uses the concept of hands to display the time. The Type 3 displays time as if it were projected onto a screen.

Unlike watches with hands, where several layers of information are superimposed, the Ressence display system projects the information onto the outside of the sapphire crystal, eliminating the last perceptible barrier between the dial and the eye –the refraction of the glass. The brain uses reflection and refraction to understand shape and depth. Filling the display with fluid removes the visual reference points that the brain uses to perceive the shape.

The effect is amplified by the play of shadows on the spherical dial. This unique concept of a projected display would be impossible with traditional overlapping hands. However, the indications are still read in the same way as traditional hands, because we have learnt to tell the time using hands and once the skill has been mastered, the eye no longer reads the hour but interprets the angle between the two hands.

RESSENCE TYPE 3 Limited Edition watch lume shot

The TYPE 3 uses the whole surface of the crystal to display the indications so they can be read from very shallow angles – submerging the display module in liquid increases the contrast between the white indicator ‘hands’ and the black dial. The black DLC becomes even darker in fluid, appearing to absorb light. The high contrast of the white indications against the jet-black dial deconstructs time and pares it back to its essence.

Setting the time without a crown

Ressence design is characterised by purity and minimalism. This quest for pared-down design includes the process of deconstructing the timepiece; a process illustrated by the elimination of traditional hands and by the invisible fluid technology used to project the indications. And by removing the crown, the TYPE 3 opens up a whole new chapter in this quest for simplicity.

The sapphire case back fulfils the functions of the crown with quadrants on the case back replacing different crown positions. The Type 3 is wound up by turning the case back. To change the date, it is simply necessary to make a longer rotation through 200° in order to arrive at the date quadrant. The hour is set by starting from the neutral position and turning in the direction indicated. A gravitational gearing system allows time setting to be disconnected by simply inverting the watch.

Architecture and system

The TYPE 3 consists of three basic elements: a central section is made from a 2mm titanium plate that integrates the lugs for the bracelet; an upper liquid-filled capsule with the complication and indications submerged in naphtha; and a lower section housing the movement (inside a Faraday cage) and winding/time-setting functions. The upper display module is completely sealed and physically separate from the movement. The indications are transmitted from the movement to the upper display via micro-magnetic fields.

Time display module

The dial and indications are curved (radius 125mm) and treated with DLC (diamond-like carbon). All the components are titanium with the exception of the gears. The indications, engraved in the discs are filled with Super-LumiNova (white, grey and orange). The display system has been invented developed and patented by Ressence and comprises 28 gears and 57 jewels (out of 82 jewels in total), three offset bi-axial satellites and an exterior date ring.

The upper module also includes a gimbal, a shock absorption system and is totally filled with fluid. A thermostatic valve system allows for any expansion or contraction of the liquid due to the ambient temperature. By virtue of the convex curve of the dial, the angle of the satellite indications is approximately 3° for the hours and 4.75° for the seconds.

Ressence Platform Watch Zero Series

About Ressence Platform Watch: Unique Timepiece with Rotating Dial Plate

At the Basel World 2010 show, the brand Ressence presented its watch with rotating dial plate, the “platform watch”. Time is displayed by a flush mounted revolving dial that embodies all the graphical elements in one plane.

Ressence Platform Watch Zero Series

This innovative way to present time avoids superimposed information like hands covering an underlying dial, it visually prioritises time scales and enhances interface readability based on traditional cognitive patterns applied in watches with hand dials. Graphically, time seems to be displayed on the outer skin of the watch.

Ressence Platform Watch Zero Series

The patented display system features a revolving module driven by a modified automatic Swiss caliber. The revolving dial plate points out the minutes, the lunatic sub-dials inside the main dial plate indicate the hours, seconds and am-pm. The sub-dials orbit around a virtual axis similar to the moons around Saturn.
