Jacob & Co. Opera God Father

The Opera masterpiece from Jacob & Co. integrates The Godfather film’s iconic music, the logo of the film and even a miniature Godfather figure, hand-engraved and hand-painted, into this extraordinary timepiece.

Introduced last year, the Opera musical timepiece combines two traditional Swiss crafts: a mechanical music box boasting two cylinders and combs and an exclusive Jacob & Co. JCFM02 manual-winding caliber. This breakthrough timepiece was challenging for the brand’s engineers and watchmakers, and as a result the Opera was in development for more than two years.

In this highly complicated timepiece, the two cylinders and combs are mounted on the movement and rotate around the dial each time they play the iconic theme from The Godfather. This works together with the triple-axis tourbillon and the hour and minute dial.

The making of music boxes has been a traditional Swiss craft for hundreds of years. In the Opera Musical Watch, Jacob & Co. has combined this artisanal work with high watchmaking for the very first time. The watch is able to play the haunting 120-note melody never-before-heard in a musical watch.

Using a sophisticated one-piece sapphire crystal that encircles the whole timepiece, the mechanics of the Opera are put on display for all to see, at the same time allowing the movement to deliver the purest sound.

A central flywheel drives the two cylinders, which was a real challenge for the watchmakers, due to the weight of the cylinders. A pusher located at two o’clock activates the rotation of the entire movement and simultaneously plays The Godfather melody. Each note is played as the tiny pins on the cylinder make contact with the individual teeth of the comb. As the cylinders turn to play the melody, the entire assembly on which they are fixed, including the triple axis tourbillon and the hour and minute dial, rotates 120 degrees around the dial.

The tourbillon rotates around its inner cage once in 40 seconds, while its intermediate cage rotates in three minutes and its outer cage in eight minutes.

Finally, in order to display the time with 12 o’clock always in its correct position, a patented differential gear system is used; the dial turns counter clockwise, while the hands keep time.

The manually wound caliber JCFM02 has been developed specifcally for this complication, using titanium for excellent sound. The movement, which is made up of 650 components, fits into a diameter of just 43mm.Jacob & Co. Regardless of whether or not the melody is playing, the triple axis tourbillon dances its round-the-clock mechanical ballet.

Jacob & Co. has the exclusive rights, awarded by Paramount, to use The Godfather logo and music in the amazing Opera timepiece.

Jacob & Co. Opera

The JACOB & CO. OPERA Musical Watch proudly houses two traditional Swiss crafts: a mechanical music box basting two cylinders and combs, and an exclusive Jacob & Co. JCFM02 manual-winding caliber.

In this new complication, the two cylinders and combs are mounted on the movement and rotate around the dial each time they play their melody. This works together with a triple-axis tourbillon and the subsidiary hour and minute dial.

The making of music boxes has been a traditional Swiss craft for hundreds of years. In the Opera Musical Watch, Jacob & Co. has combined this artisanal work with high watchmaking for the very first time, incorporating two cylinders and combs. Finally, in order to display the time with 12 o’clock always in its correct position, a patented differential gear system is used; both the dial and the hands have to turn counter-clockwise. The manually wound caliber JCFM02 has been developed specifically for this complication, using titanium components for excellent sound propagation. The movement, which comprises 650 components, fits into a diameter of just 43mm. A pusher based at two o’clock on the middle of the case triggers the melody and thus the rotation of the movement. Regardless of whether or not the melody is playing, the triple axis tourbillon dances its round-the-clock mechanical ballet.

The Jacob & Co. Opera Musical Watch comes in two different versions: one 18-piece limited edition that is minimalist in its presentation with black and gold high end finishes showing the mechanical workings. The other is a unique version, which allows decorations on the cylinders. These decorations depict a romantic gala night with an orchestra.

Ulysse Nardin Vivaldi

Swiss luxury watch manufacture Ulysse Nardin delighted high horology enthusiasts in 2013 with the introduction of “Stranger”. A marvel timepiece, it married movement and design with music, playing a rendition of Strangers in the Night.

In its second release, the in-house developed, self-winding, musical mechanical watch performs the Vivaldi melody, Violin Concerto in E. Best known for his violin concertos, Four Seasons, famed Baroque composer Vivaldi’s brilliance is bestowed on this limited edition of 99 pieces crafted from 18-karat rose gold 5N. This new timepiece is a symbol of the harmonious melding of tradition and technology.

Based on the Ulysse Nardin caliber 690 using silicium technology, the timekeeper is not only easy to operate, but it also takes wearers down the reminiscent road of childhood. Its muse: a classical music box. Within, it’s as if a music box has been whittled down and flattened to supercharge this superb timepiece. On the hour and on request, owners can enjoy listening to this cheerful and soothing Vivaldi melody.

By simply pressing the on/off pusher at the 10 o’clock position, the musical mechanism can be activated or deactivated. Press the melody-on-call pusher at 8 o’clock and instant pleasure comes to those who seek a melodic lift throughout their day.

Unique to this collection, as well, is how to wind the wristwatch, correct the time and set the date. These actions are completed by triggering the crown functions over a pusher instead of the customary action of pulling the crown. A prime advancement in watchmaking, the movement enables adjustments with significant ease, as each manipulation happens by a forward or backward turn of the crown.

As revolutionary as it is in engineering, it is equally stylish. Exhibiting a modern appeal, sleek lines are tempered by a repetitive circle motif. Large Roman numerals mark the hours, adding a casual air. Its aesthetic is further warmed by an original medallion on the back denoting its authenticity as a Ulysse Nardin musical masterpiece. Currently crafted in rose gold, this exclusive item would be just as alluring in other colors, too. It may simply be a matter of time.

A renowned manufacturer of musical timepieces, such as Stranger, and Genghis Khan and Alexander the Great Westminster tourbillon minute repeaters, Ulysse Nardin continues its storytelling of function, sound and aesthetic playing in perfect concert through this latest addition to its musical family of watches.

Ulysse Nardin Stranger Limited Edition

Swiss luxury watch brand Ulysse Nardin introduces a new, in-house developed musical mechanical watch based on caliber UN-690 using silicium technology. The first in this series of limited edition timepieces plays the melody “Strangers in the Night” — the legendary song made in 1966.

Ulysse Nardin, a veteran manufacturer of groundbreaking timepieces with musical soul, such as the Genghis Khan or Alexander the Great Westminster tourbillon minute repeaters, goes a step further with its latest mechanical, self-winding musical watch incorporating silicium technology in the escapement and anchor of its in-house UN-690 movement. Uniquely, the time is set by activating the crown functions over a pusher instead of the traditional action of pulling the crown. This important advancement allows the owner to adjust the time with significant ease.

Complementing the degree of engineering and other highly skilled expertise necessary to bring this watch to life is a playful side. The Ulysse Nardin Stranger was inspired by the classical music box; it’s as if an actual music box was whittled down and flattened to become this superb timepiece. In development for more than five years, it is a watchmaking marvel: a marriage of movement, design and music.

Breguet Classique La Musicale 7800 Rose Gold

The reference 7800 Classique “La Musicale” watch aroused a great deal of comment when it first came out, because apart from telling the time, it also houses a remarkable patented musical mechanism. This year, Breguet is introducing a new version of this outstanding timepiece.

This rose-gold watch is still fitted with Breguet’s self-winding 777 caliber with a silicon escapement and balance spring. Yet when the button at 10 o’clock is pressed or when a set time has come, this Classique model plays Badinerie, composed by Johann Sebastian Bach as the final movement of his orchestral suite N°2 in B minor.

This has been achieved with a mechanism similar to that of a musical box, except that instead of the traditional cylinder it has a disc with pegs that act successively on the 15 blades of the keyboard. A second innovation amplifies the sound so that the tune can be heard without sacrificing water resistance. It is an engine-turned membrane in metallic glass fitted under the movement.

Constant developments in acoustics at Breguet have enabled the intense research into the materials for the keyboard and membrane that would produce the best sound. The membrane allows the gold caseback to have a number of openings so as to create a Helmholtz resonator to broadcast the sound, while maintaining water resistance at 3 bar (30m).

Finally, research progress in magnetism has led to Breguet fitting a magnetic governor for the melody. This patented system, which consists of isolated magnets in a cage, reduces unwanted sound while avoiding the wear found in conventional centrifugal governors. Above all it ensures that the melody proceeds at the right tempo.

Breguet Classique La Musicale 7800 Rose Gold watch

The dial of this Breguet “La Musicale” Classique model shows the hours, minutes and seconds in the centre, with a power-reserve indicator at 3 o’clock and a visible indicator that the melody is playing between 9 and 10 o’clock.

Such a work of art has to be immaculately turned out. Which is why the hands in traditional blued steel are open tipped in the Breguet style for the hours and minutes, while the seconds hands are in the “key of G” pattern.

The dial is diamond-polished by hand to capture the light at different angles. While the music is playing, the dial, which is connected to the disc of pegs, rotates completely.

During the 20 to 25 seconds of music, the engine-turned finishes make the dial come alive in shimmering colours. Furthermore an ingenious blocking system developed by Breguet ensures that there is always enough energy to play the entire tune.

As it did for the previous model, Breguet supplies the reference 7800 with a special box made of resonant wood. The alpine spruce, selected as the ideal tonewood by makers of stringed instruments, acts as a vibrant soundboard. This wood, which is found in the Risoud forest in the Joux Valley where the Breguet Company is located, noticeably amplifies the music played in the watch.

As a work of art the “La Musicale” Classique model is in perfect keeping with Breguet’s values of elegant understatement, innovation and advanced methods. In addition, Breguet has been involved for a number of years in musical events such as the Lucerne Festival im Sommer, the Geneva Concours or New York’s Carnegie Hall. This timepiece thus underlines the brand’s connection with music in particular and European art and culture in general.

Girard-Perregaux Opera Three

Girard-Perregaux Opera Three is an extremely refined musical watch capable to remind the passing time with a melody. Its mechanism works on the principle of a music box. Its heart is a miniature carillon with a keyboard of 20 blades and one drum set with 150 hand-assembled pins. When it turns, the drum lifts the keyboard keys, to play a complete melody.

As a delicate detail, Opera Three has a small lever on the side of the case for choosing between two melodies: Mozart’s A Little Night Music or Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake. Or, according to the client’s preference, a more personal piece of music… Another lever with three positions can disconnect the sound, make the melody play upon demand or activate it for each hour.

Girard-Perregaux Opera Three

The dial is characterized with a small second at 6 o’clock and two indicators: the power reserve of the carillon and the selected melody.

Girard-Perregaux is the only brand proposing mechanisms of this sort in the dimensions of a wristwatch. Opera Three is one expression of the Brand’s savoir-faire in terms of musical watches.

At the start of the 19th Century, the prestigious Genevan watchmaker Jean-François Bautte, with whom the origins of Girard-Perregaux are associated, was making “de luxe” pocket watches with repeater chimes. This expertise has passed down the centuries, and has been enhanced with new levels of performance, to give rise to modern interpretations like Opera Three.

Girard-Perregaux Opera Three

Only the most talented watchmakers master the development of the miniature mechanism. They devote months to crafting these unique pieces, from the machining of the components to the final control, via bevelling of the parts, polishing, movement decoration, assembly, mounting the dial and hands and then fitting the case.

The Girard-Perregaux Opera Three watch is available in gold and platinum versions. Its case measures 43mm in diameter. The mechanical manual-winding movement has a power reserve of 50 hours.
