Michel Herbelin Carbon Newport Regatta Limited Edition

French watch brand Michel Herbelin presents Carbon Newport Regatta, a rugged nautical sports watch created in partnership with Aurélien Ducroz, two-time free ride skiing world champion and sailor.

Aurélien is a brand ambassador of Michel Herbelin, a French watch making company with a history of almost 75 years.

This new timepiece features a massive 46.5 mm diameter forged carbon case, which has been paired with a stainless steel container with DLC coating to make it fully watertight, all secured by five screws visible on the bezel. Renowned for being ultra-resistant to both shocks and temperature differences, this top of the range material is being used for the first time by Michel Herbelin, ensuring the watch is robust, while being light and comfortable to wear, as well as striking to look at.

Also made from forged carbon, the black marbled background of the dial enhances the dynamic data display. Coordinating with the stylised hour and minute hands, imposing black plated hour markers coated with white luminescent material punctuate a highly precise minutes scale, highlighted by a circular brushed blue flange. Completing the ensemble, a double aperture positioned at 3 o’clock indicates the day against a black background and the date against a red background.

Michel Herbelin Carbon Newport Regatta Limited Edition chronograph watch

Combining carbon with the Newport DNA – the strap’s central lugs, porthole-style bezel adorned with five screws modelled on yacht winches, ship’s wheel stamped on the crown, hands in the shape of floating pavilions and hour markers inspired by a boat’s hull – enhances the technicality of the range and truly immerses it in the world of competitive sports.

Produced in close collaboration with Aurélien Ducroz, this chronograph is equipped with a regatta countdown function. Useful for setting a race start timing within a predefined period of time, this shows up in the Newport azure blue counter at 12 o’clock. Comprised of three different levels for ease of reading, the centre reveals a red plated compass shaped hand with a luminescent white coating. Triggered at the first firing of the starting gun by pressing on the push-piece at 2 o’clock, it sweeps through three five-minute zones. While the first two are differentiated by the colour of the markers, the third informs of the imminence of a start signal by the addition of a red line, clearly visible at a glance.

A precision instrument, the counter located at 6 o’clock adds the final sporty touch to this finely-tuned watch. Complete with white central seconds hand, it can record elapsed times up to 12 hours.

Powered by a Swiss-made Sellita SW501 automatic mechanical movement exclusive to Michel Herbelin, oscillating at 28,800 vibrations per hour and incorporating 25 jewels, the Carbon Newport Regatta offers a 48-hour power reserve. Its smoky transparent caseback reveals a Michel Herbelin engraved oscillating weight.

Water-resistant to 300 metres, this limited edition is adorned with a Newport blue strap in high-performance FKM elastomer and features a deployant clasp with DLC coated steel securing buckle. Specially designed to fit the contours of the watch, it is guaranteed for 10 years thanks to the extremely resistant and high performance material.

As with all of the brand’s timepieces, the Carbon Newport Regatta was drawn, designed, assembled, adjusted and inspected at the Michel Herbelin studio in the Jura Mountains of the Franche-Comté region.

Michel Herbelin Newport Automatic Thirty Year Anniversary Edition

The iconic Newport watch, created in 1988 by the Michel Herbelin French Watchmaking Studio, is celebrating its 30th birthday this year. To mark the occasion, the brand is issuing a Newport automatic with three hands and date, in a numbered limited series of 500 pieces worldwide. This exclusive special edition timepiece is a modernist reinterpretation of the Newport.

The new-generation Newport harbours elements of both the original Newport watch, released in 1988, and the Newport Connect, the first French-made smart watch, launched in 2017.

Faithful to the Newport codes, it is instantly recognisable thanks to central horns, the wide-berth bezel, the ship’s wheel on the crown, and tapered hour markers in the form of stylised hulls. As always anchored at sea, this incarnation of the timepiece is inspired by stealth ships.

The polished steel case is faceted and at 41 mm measures a fraction larger than the previous 40.3 mm diameter. Coated in anthracite grey PVD, the case has a distinguished air suggestive of the watch’s high tech influences. The bezel, also in anthracite grey PVD-coated steel, is discreetly engraved “Newport”. Five bezel screws, inspired by yacht winches, punctuate a functional, no-nonsense dial. Framed by the minute track on a circular brushed blue flange, the black carbon backdrop showcases black nickel hands specially designed for Michel Herbelin. Adding a dynamic dimension to the ensemble, the hands are partially finished with a luminescent coating, as are the imposing hour markers, for optimal readability. A date aperture is discreetly positioned at 3 o’clock. The notched crown, taking a conical form here, is the finishing touch to this timepiece.

The watch is built to last with a sturdy FKM rubber strap, and meticulously finished to ensure comfortable wear. The smooth, shiny finish stunningly sets off the modern-day elegance of this limited edition.

Only 500 pieces will be issued worldwide. Not to leave any client disappointed, Michel Herbelin has lined up a new-generation steel Newport with three hands and date for general release. Distinct from the anniversary edition, the watch has a blue sunburst dial and leather strap.

Fitted with a Swiss-made ETA automatic mechanical movement that clocks 28,800 vibrations per hour, this watch is water-resistant to 100 metres and offers a 42-hour power reserve. Showcasing impeccable attention to detail, the transparent caseback reveals an oscillating mass engraved “Michel Herbelin” and decorated with a Côtes de Genève pattern, proffering a glimpse of the circular-grained bridges and frame.

As with all of the brand’s timepieces, this Newport was drawn, designed, assembled, adjusted and inspected at the Michel Herbelin studio in the Jura Mountains of the Franche-Comté region.

Newport : Three Decades of History
In the early 1980s, when Jean-Claude Herbelin took over the reins of the company his father founded, he set his sights on launching a new collection that would encapsulate the core values and French watchmaking heritage of the Michel Herbelin brand. This collection would go on to become a figurehead of the Michel Herbelin style.

The Newport collection honours the family’s passion for sailing and the sea. Inspired by the yachts competing in the America’s Cup Race in Newport, Rhode Island, these timepieces have anchored the brand’s reputation in the world of sailing, where watchmaking played a key role in keeping seafarers safe from the late 18th century onwards. With a watch that takes its shape from the portholes of transatlantic yachts, the Newport captures a spirit of adventure, charting a course for freedom and far-flung destinations.

Immediately identifiable by its central horns, the Newport displays its nautical affiliations with a ship’s wheel on the dial and crown, and hull-shaped hour markers. The first men’s model released in 1988 was water-resistant to 50 metres and fitted with a quartz movement. The gold-plated brass case was protected by a mineral crystal and measured 34 mm in diameter.

At the time of its release the Newport watch was immediately welcomed into the Michel Herbelin family worldwide. In addition to the atypical design characterised by its central horns, this distinctive model offered striking combinations of colours and materials: a deep blue dial decorated with gilt hour markers and a ship’s wheel, a blue sharkskin strap, and a yellow-gold-plated brass case complemented by an imposing rhodium-plated brass bezel. Over the years an array of new men’s and women’s models featuring quartz and automatic movements have been added to the Newport collection. The case has appeared in stainless steel and titanium-treated steel, and the dial has taken on a unique indigo blue hue.

A firm favourite since its initial release, buoyed by international advertising campaigns, the Newport watch has become an icon of the Michel Herbelin French Watchmaking Studio and cemented the brand’s reputation around the globe. The Newport broke records with two-figure growth in sales between 1991 and the 2000s.

In the early years of the 21st century Michel Herbelin added two new lines to the Newport collection, both of which were distinguished by the absence of the signature central horns from the strap. The Newport Royale line was designed with women in mind. These quartz watches feature genuine mother-of-pearl dials decorated with diamonds, and are available in a choice of steel or 18K yellow gold. The Newport J-Class line was inspired by the company’s watchmaking heritage. These automatic timepieces are assembled by hand using the calibre of artisan craftsmanship and skill associated with J-class yachts. Available in a choice of steel or 18K yellow gold, the complications aboard these movements include flyback, GMT, and power reserve.

So far, any deviations from the original Newport watch had been slight. But in 2007 Michel Herbelin treated the Newport to a full makeover, presenting an updated quartz chronograph in a chestnut hue. It was a new era for the Newport collection. A year later the Newport Trophy Grand Sport line was launched, comprising chronograph sports watches and diving watches in ceramic, rubber and stainless steel.

In 2010, the French watchmaker brought the Newport back to its roots with a redesign that anchored the timepiece firmly in its time. The redesign was an instant hit. More faithful to the original Newport created in 1988, the new collection featured ladies’ and men’s watches that were practical yet refined. The Newport stayed its course as it evolved into a three-handed model with date, a chronograph and a limited-edition skeleton model.

Michel Herbelin French Watchmaking Studio celebrated its seventieth anniversary in 2017, but was as always turned resolutely towards the future. The Newport Connect watch, unveiled at Baselworld, stays true to traditional watchmaking codes, integrating smart functions in a classic analogue dial. A distillation of innovative technology showcased in a watch inspired by the iconic Newport collection, the Newport Connect by Michel Herbelin is the first smart watch made in France, marking a milestone in French watchmaking history.

In keeping with the success the Newport collection has brought the brand since 1988, Michel Herbelin has a buoyant presence in the nautical world. The brand is a proud patron of enterprising sailors, and since 2015 has sponsored the Porquerolles Classic yacht regatta, a race around the islands off Hyères in the south of France, which takes place in early June.

Three decades since it was created in 1988, the Newport watch continues to be the brand’s number one best-seller. It is made in Charquemont, France, in the same small town near the Swiss border where watchmaking enthusiast Michel Herbelin set up shop in 1947 to produce his first Impec watches, timepieces of simple, elegant design. The brand now retails in some 50 countries and continues to grow thanks to the Newport’s enduring popularity.

MICHEL HERBELIN

MICHEL HERBELIN is an Independent, Family-Run, Traditional French Watchmaking Company that manufactures exceptional timepieces. As well as a name and a brand, Michel Herbelin is also a durable and reliable design and quality: a brand which represents 30% of the French watchmaking market within its price range.

Michel Herbelin has been established in Charquemont, in Haut-Doubs, on the Swiss border for more than 60 years. It is a small town with a strong watchmaking tradition where only 50 years ago there were no less than 30 watchmaking businesses. Today, only a few continue to uphold the watchmaking tradition. Michel Herbelin makes use of only Swiss movements in their timepieces to which they then add the luxury and the refinement of French art de vivre.

A post second world war export boom in the watchmaking industry led often to the erosion of quality. Michel Herbelin, a shopkeeper’s son, had a passion for watchmaking. He decided to embark upon further studies and to abandon his parents’ plan for taking over the family business.

After a few years spent working as a foreman for a local company, whose quality of workmanship was not up to his standards, he refused to carry on working in these conditions, aspiring to restore prestige to traditional French watchmaking. Michel Herbelin started out with vigour and enthusiasm by setting up his own, eponymous business. He wanted to build his business on strong, distinctive values which his staff could share and aspire to: creativity, high quality, humanity, stylishness, and rigorous management. Michel Herbelin soon acquired a reputation for his universally applied high standards.

By way of an anecdote, the first watches to be sold were named “impec”, the founder’s way of promoting their impeccable quality and reliability. It was the beginning of the Michel Herbelin story or of that of timepieces made in France.

It’s a great anniversary for a company that has been crowned with some great successes, and is still supported by the Herbelin family, which continues the tradition and is involved in the company’s development. This development is guided by family values and a passion for traditional watchmaking.

Michel Herbelin, has passed on his passion and the brand to his sons Pierre-Michel, the Chairman of the company, and Jean-Claude, its CEO. 65 years later, the 3rd generation is now also represented in the company, since two of Michel’s grandchildren have started working in its marketing department.

The company has produced over 10 million watches since 1947 and the brand is now available through 3,000 outlets in 50 countries. The company employs 80 people and 500 watches produced in their facilities in France every day.

The Fifties/Sixties: Michel Herbelin became known as the French specialist in mechanical watches. His name became a brand synonymous with technical prowess, high quality and precision. The first Michel Herbelin logo was created in 1965.

The Seventies: Jean-Claude Herbelin joined the company. His eye for aesthetics enabled the business to make considerable progress on the world market. The brand began to distinguish itself and to flourish, particularly with its subtly designed quartz watches. It was one of the pioneers of the dress watch. The Scandinavian range was one of the first in the category of “jewellery” creations by Jean-Claude. The following anecdote recounts one of the great successes of the company: Tommy Nilson, a young Swedish 6 novice watchmaker went to Bijorhca, in Paris, a trade fair which was normally reserved for French jewellers. His appearance did nothing to portray his talents as a businessman. He decided to establish the brand in Sweden by opening the “Tic Tac Tommy” shop in Göteborg. It was an instant success. Extremely fashionable, the models of the Scandinavian range were in great demand: the fashion-conscious all wore a Michel Herbelin watch with a solid strap. They became famous throughout the whole of Scandinavia and beyond: in Germany, in the United Kingdom and in Switzerland.

The Eighties: Jean-Claude Herbelin succeeded his father at the head of the company. Pierre-Michel, his brother, came to join him then, to be responsible for the technical aspects as well as production.

1987 – Birth of The First Newport Watch: The Herbelins’ passion for the maritime world, its seascapes and sailing ships, came to life through the creation of the Newport range. This elegant, sporty collection drew attention because of its unusual design, which is characterised by its central strap attachment. Several different variations followed: ladies’, men’s, quartz, automatic… Today it is still highly successful with customers. It has become the brand’s flagship product.

Newport Automatic

The Nineties: Constructed a hundred meters from the family home, where the first workshops were housed, the factory, built in 1977, tripled in size.

The Beginning Of The 21st Century: Launch of the Newport J-Class range. The different models proposed were equipped with automatic movements, fashioned by hand with casings and bands in stainless steel and gold. Accompanying this collection, the Newport Royale range, aimed particularly at women, with its finish in stainless steel, gold and diamonds was also launched.

2008: The brand launched the Newport Trophy Grand Sport range, solid yet elegant, designed to withstand extreme conditions.

2012: After 65 years of history, Michel Herbelin is still innovating in terms of its design and techniques, creating timeless quality models to appeal to both collectors and followers of fashion alike. In December 2012, Michel Herbelin worked together with Les Rhabilleurs and Vincent Daveau to design a new collector’s watch: the Newport Yacht Club Regatta (limited edition of 25 watches).

In 2013, the collections further developed within the brand’s flagship series (Newport Yacht Club, Interchangeable Antares and Heritage), which have contributed to the prestige of the Michel Herbelin brand and its international renown. Various inspired projects are currently in the preparation stages at the Charquemont workshops with the aim of offering quality ‘Made in France’ watch-making with ‘Swiss made’ movements.

After sales service
The after sales service, provided by the Michel Herbelin team at the French site, is one of the company’s other strong points and is considered to be one of the best in the world for reliability, price and also turnaround. In the workshops, qualified and experienced watchmakers carry out very high quality work and requests are dealt with within 8 working days. The workshops of the Michel Herbelin Company guarantee a restoration of watches, which is less than ten years old. Beyond this period, repair is done depending on parts still available.

Michel Herbelin Inspiration 1947, Anniversary Watch Limited Edition

1947 saw the foundation of French Watchmaking company Michel Herbelin, which this year celebrates its 70th birthday. An anniversary watch commemorating those seven decades of watchmaking passion is to be issued in a numbered limited series of 500 worldwide. Paying tribute to the past, this new timepiece christened Inspiration 1947 also brings beauty into the present moment, beating to the rhythm of its manually wound mechanical movement.

While naturally drawing inspiration from the watch designs of its earliest years – 1947 to 1950 – Michel Herbelin has taken painstaking care over every detail of its anniversary model to anchor it in the 21st century.

The case measures 40 mm in diameter, its design a ubiquity of rounded curves extending into refined, plain lugs. A domed dial shelters beneath an answering curve of sapphire crystal, set off by the polished yellow gold that plates the steel case. Patterned with a matte silver sunburst, the dial heightens this model’s understated aesthetics with two hands in finely curved dagger shapes that sweep around a clearly set out minute track punctuated by gilded applique hour-markers. With a date aperture discreetly set at 3 o’clock, the classicism of the overall design is subtly roused by the graphic starkness of the dial’s small seconds counter.

Lovers of beauty will appreciate Michel Herbelin’s single-minded attention to the finish of each tiny detail. Like the ribbed, ball-shaped crown set with a blue cabochon, or the watch strap made from gold leather, artisanally hand-finished for a patina that brings the final touch of elegance to the timeless design of this commemorative timepiece.

True to the watchmaking conventions of the 1950s, Inspiration 1947 is fitted with a manually wound mechanical movement – the first seen at Michel Herbelin since 1970. As ever, a Swiss-made calibre was selected to guarantee reliability and sturdiness: the 24-jewelled Sellita 11 ½ SW216-1 oscillates at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour and offers a 42-hour power reserve. The circular graining and Côtes de Genève pattern of its workings can be admired through a transparent caseback.

Founded in Charquemont in the Haut-Doubs region, French Watchmaking Atelier Michel Herbelin has been designing timepieces that highlight French watchmaking expertise for 70 years. The family-run business takes pride in producing quality watches of refined design, and making them widely accessible through its reasonable price range. In keeping with this philosophy laid down in 1947, the Michel Herbelin anniversary watch was conceived, designed, assembled, calibrated and inspected within the Maison in the Jura.

Michel HERBELIN Newport Yacht Club Automatic Chronograph

The French watchmaker Michel HERBELIN presents a new interpretation of its automatic chronograph from the Newport Yacht Club collection. Sporting hours and moments, elegant in all circumstances, this timepiece sets the tone of urban sophistication.

With a generous diameter of 43.5 mm, the case in steel coated with grey anthracite PVD reveals a black dial, vertically hand-brushed. Protected by an anti-reflective sapphire glass, with luminescent bevelled markers, paced by the hour and minute hands, also coated in a white luminescent material, provide optimum visibility, even in low lighting conditions. Orchestrating the ensemble, the “hour”, “second” and “minute” counters, positioned respectively at 6, 9 and 12 o’clock, count the passing of time up to 12 hours, while a tachymeter scale measures speeds ranging from 50 to 400 kmph.

Coupled with a date aperture at 3 o’clock and a timer discreetly located on the ring flange, this Michel Herbelin chronograph combines, finely balanced together, a large number of practical functions for everyday use. With contrasting effect, the rose gold PVD, enhancing the steel bezel, covering the buttons and subtly highlighting the dial finishes, provides ease of reading for the information displayed.

Distinctive with its central clasp, which is emblematic of the collection, the strap in elastogator – rubber with a crocodile imprint, lined with a synthetic material – which is gentle to wear, completes the chic sports allure of this timepiece.

Designed, conceived, assembled, regulated and checked in the workshops of the Michel Herbelin brand, the Newport Yacht Club automatic chronograph inherits a legacy of French watch-making expertise, with its roots established in the Jura massif in Franche-Comté since 1947. Water resistant to 100 metres, it contains an automatic self-winding mechanical movement of Swiss manufacture (Sellita SW500), the guarantee of quality and precision.

Oscillating at 28,800 vibrations an hour, and with 25 rubies, it can be admired through a transparent case back revealing a “Geneva waves” decorated oscillation weight. With a comfortable power reserve of 42 hours, this Tricompax “C” chronograph boasts every asset required to accompany a man in his day to day activities.

On sale from March, this new version is an addition to the Newport Yacht Club collection, created in 1988. Inspired by the portholes of transatlantic sailing ships, it owes its name “Newport” to the Rhode Island marina that has for many years hosted the America’s Cup.

Michel Herbelin Odyssée Chronograph on Leather Strap

The French watchmaking brand Michel Herbelin expands its Odyssée Chronograph collection with a new version on a leather strap. The sporty 70’s-inspired timepiece has a distinctive allure with its singular decagonal bezel.

In timely step with the vintage trend, this new Michel Herbelin model has its own self-assured style. The bezel of the Odyssée chronograph is enhanced by a blend of materials beginning with the brushed steel of its 43 mm case. Studded with ten screws in polished steel, its design relinquishes traditional shapes in favor of the 70’s-style decagon. With a black PVD coating in DLC (Diamond-Like Carbon) offering an increased resistance to the test of time, the colour and finish of the bezel surface continues along the crown – protected by the case – and the push-pieces, which are grooved for easy grip. To complete this look with a tasteful touch, the bracelet in matte black alligator grain cowhide picks up the sportive spirit of the watch with double red overstitching.

With its Swiss-made quartz chronograph movement (Ronda 5040 B) guaranteeing precision to the second for fifty-four months, this new Odyssée on leather strap with its black lacquered dial is truly built for speed. With a large date calendar at 12 o’clock, the dial discreetly displays “continuous seconds” at 3 o’clock, “tenths of the second” at 6 o’clock and a “thirty minute” counter at 9 o’clock. Protected by a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal, the tachymeter scale on the flange edge enables the red seconds hand to indicate speeds of between 60 to 400 km/h. The luminescent hands and indexes ensure optimal visibility even in dim lighting conditions. This vintage chronograph with just two push-pieces is simple to use, and its screwed case back offers water resistance up to 100 metres.

Heir to the French watchmaking expertise tradition, Michel Herbelin has been rooted in the Franche-Comté area of the Jura Mountains since 1947. The Odyssée chronograph was developed, designed, assembled, adjusted and checked within the Michel Herbelin workshops.

Michel Herbelin Yacht Club Régate Automatic

For over 65 years, the Michel Herbelin workshops in Charquemont, Franche-Comté near the Swiss border, have been designing, manufacturing and selling French-made watches all over the world. The Herbelin family are huge fans of sailing and the sailing world which has inspired their creativity for 3 generations.

A testimony to this passion: the Newport Yacht Club watch, the brand’s emblematic timepiece inspired by the portholes on transatlantic yachts and which has appeared in many variations like Newport Trophy, Newport Yacht Club, Odyssée, and Newport Yacht Club Squelette.

Naturally, the Herbelin family has been involved in major sailing races and many sailors wear the brand’s watches. Michel Herbelin was partner to the 2014 Route du Rhum race which left Saint-Malo in Brittany on 2nd November for Point-à-Pitre in Guadeloupe with over 90 yachts in the race.
