MANUFACTURE ROYALE

The origins of  Swiss luxury watch brand ‘Manufacture Royale’ goes back to 1770. This iconic brand name was relaunched in 2010,  almost 250 years later the foundation of “Manufacture Royale des Montres de Ferney” by French philosopher Voltaire.

History of MANUFACTURE ROYALE

The Manufacture Royale traces its origins to the Enlightenment, when the philosopher and brilliant entrepreneur Voltaire opened his watchmaking workshop near Geneva. Almost 250 years later, Manufacture Royale takes the liberty to play with its founder’s captivating past, values and horological creation to instil passion and spirit into its timepieces.

Manufacture Royale stands for a specific and different view of watchmaking. Which was already the case when it was founded in 1770. A fervent defender of liberty in all forms, Voltaire was also an entrepreneur. Often overlooked, his business activities led to the establishment of Manufacture Royale in Ferney.

Four thousand watches would come out of the Manufacture’s workshop, destined for the crowned heads and elite of Europe. Made by acclaimed master watchmakers, Jean-Antoine Lépine among them, the watches that bore the Manufacture Royale name incorporated the most challenging complications, including striking mechanisms such as repeaters.

Their exteriors were equally impressive, with gold cases embellished with elaborate engraving, enamel or set with gems.

Revival

In 2008, Arnaud Faivre founded TEC EBAUCHES SA for manufacturing watch components, high complication calibres, movement blanks as well as decoration and assembly. In 2010, he revived the Manufacture Royale brand with OPERA, a minute repeater watch model designed by Charles Grosbety and manufactured in collaboration with master watchmakers Michel Navas and Enrico Barbasini of Fabrique du Temps.

In 2013, Manufacture Royale was taken over by Gérard, David, Alexis and Marc Gouten of the Gouten family, through the GTN Luxury Holding SA.

Gouten family members have been renowned for their expertise in the luxury watch industry since decades. Promoted by the Gouten family, Gouten Distribution SA is a distributor of premium Swiss watch brands like Cartier, Breguet, Piaget, Vacheron Constantin, DeLaneau, Perrelet and Harry Winston.

Founded by Alexis Gouten (son of Gérard Gouten) in 2002, Macher SA was the leading distributor of watches made by Frederique Constant Group in Switzerland. In 2016, Frederique Constant Group acquired Macher SA.

An experienced entrepreneur, Alexis Gouten has been managing Manufacture Royale since 2013. His other business ventures are Maverick Time SA, LSD Luxury Stars Distribution SA, Saigon Venture Partners and Wobee.

Manufacture Royale has the technical and creative capacity to achieve the creative freedom envisaged by Voltaire. The brand’s watch movements are developed and made in its workshops, in the Swiss Jura. The skills and talent of master watchmakers and craftsmen are the guarantee of mechanical and decorative excellence.

Thanks to their work, thanks to the energy and experience they bring, Manufacture Royale timepieces contain an original interpretation of watchmaking, and find their balance in daring and beauty, tradition and modernity, passion and humility.

Manufacture Royale’s flagship collections are OPERA, Androgyne, 1770, 1770 Micromegas, 1770 Haute Voltige and ADN. Presently, Manufacture Royale makes bespoke timepieces only.

Manufacture Royale Micromegas with Pink Gold Case and Khaki Lacquered Dial

Like the Voltairian character of Micromegas, who advocated not hesitating to change his outlook on things, Swiss luxury watchmaker Manufacture Royale is revisiting its two-speed double tourbillon this year, daring to use colors.

A double tourbillon flying at two speeds, the left cage makes a complete rotation in only 6 seconds, while the right one rotates ten times more slowly (1 minute).

Manufacture Royale Androgyne Pink Gold Bespoke Edition

For this spring 2019, Manufacture Royale first imagined to associate the symbol of purity and majesty, represented by the material of gold as well as the symbol of infinity and wisdom represented by the blue color.

The Royale Bespoke creation is revealed, at first glance, by a 43mm case with the softness of gold to reveal a skeleton movement that dresses its components in a delicate azure blue CVD finish. To obtain this color, each component, however small, is coated with a layer of metal oxide and, thanks to a different thickness, is taken up by the play of colors.

Manufacture Royale 1770 Haute Voltige ‘Dragon’

Manufacture Royale presents an original and creative version of its iconic 1770 Haute Voltige watch, a special edition that pays tribute to freedom.

In the 1770s, Voltaire, who was involved in the foundation of the Manufacture Royale, obtained the liberation of the Pays de Gex. The colours and engraving of the watch are inspired by the uniform of the dragoons that escorted the philosopher during this time.

The 1770 Haute Voltige Dragon is nonconformist in all its aspects. Confident of its art and technical skills, Manufacture Royale has broken away from traditional constraints and codes to give free rein to its creativity and impose its style.

The contrasting colours and materials, as well as depth of volumes, are striking. Shadow and light effects transform our perception. The heart of the watch is bared. The escapement and balance wheel are unusually positioned on the dial side, producing a hypnotic spectacle and giving material form to passing time.

Manufacture Royale 1770 Haute Voltige ‘Dragon’

The ethereal large red anodised aluminium balance wheel is suspended to a bridge above the sunray brushed khaki dial and its superb reflections.

The slightly raised subsidiary second time zone dial is decorated with a sun stamp and circled with an appliquéd metal rim. The sword-shaped hands, openworked on the first time zone, seem to be suspended in mid-air.

The hours and minutes of the two time zones are perfectly independent. This rare and useful configuration is used to accurately tell the time for all geographic zones, including those whose minutes vary by 15 or 30 minutes with the GMT reference.

The second time zone is set using the crown – a very easy option. Furthermore, the absence of a traditional corrector ensures that the pure design of the watch remains intact.

The 1770 Haute Voltige watch’s case has also been personalised for this version. The two sidebars surrounding the case to define the horns and middle case band are hand-engraved. The notched crown is hand-polished and bears the brand’s initials.

The sapphire crystal caseback is held by four screws and reveals the marvellous finishing of the self-winding movement whose bridges are chamfered and decorated with Côtes de Genève. The original design draws its strength from a symmetry made possible by the fact that the balance wheel has been moved to the dial side.

The 1770 Haute Voltige Dragon watch is worn on a hand-stitched alligator strap with steel pin buckle.

The watch is also available in a rose gold version.

Manufacture Royale 1770 ‘Micromegas’ Révolution – New Editions

The Manufacture Royale 1770 ‘Micromegas’ Révolution is an invitation to travel into a spectacular mechanical world regulated by two flying tourbillons running at different rotation speeds.

True to the brand philosophy of offering rare, creative and authentic luxury, this watchmaking feat is now available in three highly exclusive editions of three watches, playing with contrasting materials and colours.

Manufacture Royale 1770 ‘Micromegas’ Révolution - New Editions (blue and silver)

The Manufacture Royale 1770 Micromégas Révolution proposes innovative and spectacular watch kinetics. Although a few rare multiple tourbillon watches do exist, it is the first to combine two cages with different rotation speeds.

One completes an exceptionally rapid rotation in just 6 seconds whereas the other opts for the traditional minute. A torque stabiliser averages out the two for enhanced precision. This hypnotic ballet is completed by the oscillations of a micro-rotor. The hours are indicated on an off-centred dial, like a regulator, whereas the minutes are indicated by a skeleton wheel.

Manufacture Royale 1770 ‘Micromegas’ Révolution - New Editions with khaki green decore and silvered dial

The sculptural 45mm case remains true to the style of the 1770 collection. Two sidebars, held by hexagonal screws, surround the middle case, forming elegant, slender horns. Its strong features are highlighted by a fluted bezel.

The sapphire crystal caseback is closed by four screws and reveals the splendid hand finishing of the MR08 calibre.

The model is now available in three exclusive limited editions of only three pieces – a rare luxury, where each version expresses a different and assertive personality. The first two elegant and original editions are available with a titanium case and intense purple décor with black dial or silvered blue dial. The third, in pink gold with khaki décor and silvered dial, plays with warmer tones.

Manufacture Royale 1770 ‘Micromegas’ Révolution - New Editions with purple decor and silvered dial

Each finish has been meticulously chosen and developed to optimise its depth and radiance. The bridges and mainplate are covered in a fine transparent metal oxide layer (CVD treatment) to obtain an even shade while maintaining the material’s texture.

The contrasting colours and materials are striking, bringing out the architectural and kinetic character of the movement.

The individual number of each watch is visible on a cartridge inserted in the mainplate at 6 o’clock. The 1770 Micromégas Révolution watch is worn on a matching coloured alligator strap with off-white hand-stitching.

Manufacture Royale ADN

The Manufacture Royale ADN watch is the heir to the Brand’s genetic code, a new expression of a bold and singular vision of watchmaking.

At its heart, the calibre MR09 is the ninth to be created by the Brand’s watchmakers. This splendid mechanism regulated by a flying tourbillon displays two time zones like never before.

Each may be independently set right to the minute while the local time is indicated by an original patented jumping-hour system. The ultimate travel companion, this aesthetic and technical masterpiece is available in different versions combining traditional or high-tech materials.

The Manufacture Royale ADN watch is a fascinating watchmaking creation, imposing its style through the Brand’s identity codes. The dynamic forms, three-dimensional architecture and strength of design highlight a singular character. Its sculptural aesthetic is animated by a perfect mechanism, reinterpreting the art of ‘skeleton’ movements in a resolutely contemporary vision.

Manufacture Royale ADN watch

The case of the Manufacture Royale ADN watch is directly inspired by the Opera and Androgyne models at the heart of the brand’s revival. Its curves have been rounded and softened, bestowing its ‘steampunk’ style with an even more modern character.

Its mobile horns pivot on the dial formed by two lateral stretcher pieces enclosing the middle whose round bezel is held by 12 screws. This technical construction (no fewer than 67 components) has been studied for optimal ergonomics which lend excellent comfort when worn despite its 46 mm diameter.

What’s more, it allows for combinations of original materials. In fact, the Manufacture Royale ADN watch is available in three versions: stainless steel – stainless steel-DLC and forged carbon – pink gold and forged carbon.

The ‘ADN’ model is built around the exclusive MR09 calibre, a new demonstration of the creativity and combined expertise of the Manufacture. This manually wound mechanical movement indicates a first time zone on a dial at noon combining an innovative ‘jumping’ hour digital display with an analogue minute display featuring a sword-shaped hand.

The periodical jump of a disc reveals the hour through an aperture at the exact place where the number is traditionally positioned on the dial. It is quick, intuitive and fun to read.

The second time zone indication is offset at 4 o’clock on a sub-dial with an open-worked centre. The minutes are independent, a rare and useful functionality suited to all  time zones, including those which vary by 30 or 15 minutes from the GMT reference.

For added sophistication, the hours and minutes of the second time zone are set using the crown without the use of traditional push-pieces or adjustment buttons. The watch is set in position 1 for local reference time and position 2 for the travel destination time.

The calibre MR09 is regulated by a one-minute flying tourbillon which fights against the effects of gravity. Mounted on ceramic ball bearings, the tourbillon cage is fixed only on one side – in order to admire its fascinating ballet and splendid hand-finishings. Its balance with regulating screws oscillates at 21,600 vibrations per hour for a power reserve of at least 80 hours.

By removing all unnecessary components, the Manufacture Royale enhances the structure of the movement in a highly technical production playing on transparency and volumes. With the brand’s customised approach, superb movement finishings are adapted to the design of each version. The finely angled bridges feature a rhodium finish for the stainless steel model and a darker NAC finish for the forged carbon models.

On the back of the watch, the sapphire crystal closed by 4 screws highlights the movement. The stainless steel-DLC version’s crystal is tinted red, reflecting the touches of colour that punctuate other elements of its design. The movement reveals its splendid architecture under a different light.

Magnified by the ‘skeleton’ execution, the functions are connected in a circle around the barrel with the tourbillon, the jumping hour mechanism of the first time zone (with its regulating spring and jumper) and the mechanism of the second time zone. Everything is perfectly finished. Hand-chamfering, circular-graining, brushed polishing or hooping highlight the attention to detail.

The Manufacture Royale ADN watch is offered on a flexible black or red rubber strap with stainless steel or stainless steel-DLC folding buckle, ensuring wearing comfort and security.

Manufacture Royale 1770 Flying Tourbillon Openwork

Swiss luxury watchmaker Manufacture Royale presents a new version of its openwork tourbillon movement combined with the more classic elegance from its 1770 collection.

The 1770 Manufacture Royale Tourbillon Openwork is a fascinating watch design that reveals its inner workings in complete transparency. Its components are open-worked to reveal a mechanical sculpture consisting of watch components, space, shadow and light. A feat of balance and strength, the structure of the movement revolves around the symmetry of the barrel at 12 o’clock and the tourbillon at 6 o’clock.

Manufacture Royale 1770 Flying Tourbillon Openwork watch rose gold version

Inspired by a contemporary and nonconformist vision of watch-making, the 1770 Tourbillon Openwork plays with volumes, contrasting materials and colour. The bridge, the mainplate, the barrel and the tourbillon cage are CVD-treated: a fine deposit of a transparent metal oxide obtains a brown shade with deep reflections.

Manufacture Royale has opted for a flying tourbillon, a cantilevered construction where the tourbillon cage is held on one side only; in fact, it features the characteristic sword. Determinedly modern, it is mounted on ceramic bearings while its pallet and pallet wheel are in silicon. True to watch-making tradition, it is meticulously hand-finished.

Manufacture Royale 1770 Flying Tourbillon Openwork watch steel version

The barrel, crowned with coat of arms struck with the initials of Manufacture Royale, is open-worked thus revealing its spring. A marking plate is added to the movement between 8 and 11 o’clock. Comprising 167 components, this manual winding calibre offers a power reserve of more than 4 days.

The smooth curves of the 1770 case are enhanced by two side lugs held by four screws which hold the middle case to form elegant horns. Its peerless finishing testifies to the care taken with each detail.

Available in steel and rose gold, it perfectly fits the wrist for optimal comfort, despite its generous 43 mm size.

The slightly domed sapphire crystal and transparent caseback give an extraordinary view of the movement. The sword-shaped skeleton hands have a slightly rounded outline and show the hours and minutes on twelve markers built into the inner flange.

The Manufacture Royale 1770 Flying Tourbillon openwork watch is available on a hand-stitched, large scaled alligator strap. Fitting seamlessly onto the case, it is closed by a steel or rose gold pin buckle.

Manufacture Royale 1770 Micromegas Revolution

Manufacture Royale presents the new 1770 Micromegas Revolution, a timepiece featuring a double flying tourbillon with two different rotation speeds named in tribute to a legendary character imagined by Voltaire.

The 1770 Micromegas Revolution is a groundbreaking timepiece featuring a dial display that is at once revolutionary and captivating, both technically and visually. Two flying tourbillons spin at two different rotation speeds, one at 6 seconds and the other at 60 seconds.

An hour hand tracks a subdial while a skeletonized turning disc indicates minutes. Together with an oscillating automatic rotor, these elements all combine to interpret the passing of time in an anthology of revolving indications.

Manufacture Royale 1770 Micromegas Revolution watch rose gold case

Manufacture Royale initially found inspiration in Voltaire’s story to develop the calibre MR04 that equips the 1770 Micromegas—their first timepiece with a double flying tourbillon rotating at two different speeds. While multiple tourbillons do already exist, it wasn’t until the 1770 Micromegas that the two tourbillon cages each rotated at a different rate.

The cage on the left side of the dial completes a rotation in only 6 seconds—quite a performance, whereas the cage on the right side of the dial moves 10 times slower, requiring a full minute to complete its rotation. Both cages are connected by a torque stabilizer directly linked to the main power source, the barrel, with no intermediaries for the regulating mechanisms.

Manufacture Royale 1770 Micromegas Revolution watch with titanium case

Building on this concept, the 1770 Micromegas Revolution has a completely new heart that makes it beat: calibre MR08. This exclusive movement reveals a medium-sized rotor on its dial. A notable exception among similar timepieces, its automatic winding system is mounted on ceramic ball bearings and features a power reserve of approximately 40 hours.

The two tourbillons will immediately capture and hold your attention while you delight in their de-synchronization. The two revolving and revolutionary cages are supported by delicately chiseled ruthenium bridges, offering a display that enthralls.

A rotor oscillates in the upper dial, flanked on the right by a subdial indicating hours, and both elements have a superimposed rotating skeletonized minute disk floating on top of them.

Manufacture Royale 1770 Haute Voltige

Manufacture Royale is enriching the 1770 Voltige line with a new version, the 1770 Haute Voltige.

The 1770 Haute Voltige encourages the freedom to travel by offering a choice of two time zones, directly adjustable by the crown. The 1770 Haute Voltige is freed from the constraint of one single time and instils a taste for adventure.

In this highly ethereal composition, Manufacture Royale has raised the balance wheel and counter on the second time zone above the dial, like a stunt-flying demonstration.

Manufacture Royale 1770 Haute Voltige

The two finely sculpted bridges of the 1770 Haute Voltige progressively rise up on either side of the dial. The first, very ethereal, bridge holds the balance wheel above the setting mechanism, whereas the second bridge harmoniously positions the second dial at a different height. These raised elements create an impression of lightness and movement with captivating shadow and light effects.

The construction offers a view of the oscillations of the ultra-light balance wheel and the motion of the escapement, the beating heart of the watch.

Positioned at 5 o’clock, the small dial of the second time zone contrasts with the sunray of the main dial through a quilted pattern and fine polished rim. Open-worked hands indicating the reference time and full hands on the second time zone complete the very characteristic architecture of the 1770 Haute Voltige, for optimal legibility.

The Calibre MR07 beats inside this timepiece is the 7th developed by Manufacture Royale since its rebirth in 2010 and thus demonstrates the creative energy and skills brought together in its manufacture. This calibre highlights a double technical feat: a central hour-and-minute display linked to an off-centre secondary time zone display.

Manufacture Royale 1770 Haute Voltige watch

This second time zone comprises an additional difficulty with a setting by the crown instead of the usual push-buttons. This offers comfortable use and pares down the case middle. Its display on an independent dial adapts to all types of time zones, including rare ones, which vary by a half hour or a quarter of an hour.

The hand-finishing of the Calibre MR07 is visible through the transparent sapphire caseback. The connoisseur will notice the three bridges including a very ethereal one whose shape, imitating that of the rotor, gives a view of the multiple movement wheels.

The 45 mm diameter steel case features the aesthetic and technical codes of the 1770 collection. It features two lateral stretcher pieces that grip the central part and form the horns at each end.

Four screws fix them to the case on the side. The lines are taut, both gentle and powerful, and give the 1770 Haute Voltige the energy and flexibility of a genuine instrument for travellers.

Manufacture Royale Voltige Black Feather (Plume Noire)

Manufacture Royale’s Voltige Plume Noire timepiece recounts the epic battle waged by Voltaire and Rousseau, two brilliant philosophers and sworn enemies of the Age of Enlightenment.

Faithful to its principles, Manufacture Royale has drawn on the hectic life of its exuberant founder Voltaire to provide an alternative illustration of courage and power. The Voltige Plume Noire is a daring feat which proves that the brand of avant-garde fine watchmaking practised by Manufacture Royale has cultivated a sense of provocation that is pertinent, subtle and stimulating.

Manufacture Royale Voltige Black Feather (Plume Noire)

Limited to 38 pieces – Rousseau’s age when this fight began – the Voltige Plume Noire presents a micro-blasted and black PVD-treated steel case and dial. The dial is crossed by vertical Côtes de Genève and presents a seconds counter at 6 o’clock featuring a mesh decoration.

A deep blue – the only colour – adorns several elements such as the hands, the screws of the dial, the minutes scale running from 12 to 8 o’clock, and the canvas heart of the strap. For once, the signature of the Voltige – the raised titanium balance – blends into the background.

The Limited edition Androgyne “Origine” is made in the audacious spirit of Voltaire, who founded Manufacture Royale 245 years ago, in 1770.

Just like other Androgyne models, Androgyne “Origine” features an eye catching, unmistakably steam punk inspired 52 part case with flexible lugs to ensure extreme wearability. This ingenious construction gives a linear frame to the circular watch dial where 12 bezel screws mark the hours.

A lot of energy went into the complete skeletonisation of the hand-wound movement, which proudly shows off the softly curved bridges. In addition the watch makers changed the technical aspects of the tourbillon escapement.

Upgrading to that of a flying tourbillon with silicon escape wheel and ceramic ball bearing is on par with blending creativity and traditional values while integrating the latest industrial advancements of modern watchmaking.

The skeletonisation of the 167 part Androgyne “Origine” movement allows one to completely follow the precise action of the flat balance spring oscillating 21,600 times per hour. With no dial obscuring the view, one can truly enjoy all the finishing executed according to strict haute horlogerie tradition.

The MR06 movement’s brass parts have gone through flank drawing, which removes any machine marks and prevents corrosion, before being chamfered. Last but not least, the parts have undergone an electrolytic treatment, which gives them the black ruthenium coating.

Androgyne “Origine” has been produced in a strictly limited edition: 20 pieces in rose gold and 45 in black PVD coated stainless steel, both editions featuring the“245 ème Anniversaire,” engraved on the back of the watch.

Manufacture Royale 1770 Rose Gold & Diamonds

Manufacture Royale presents a new diamond-set rose gold version of its 1770 watch.

Named after the year Manufacture Royale was founded, the 1770 watch embodies the daring and excellence which define the Manufacture. Its restrained and thoughtfully elaborated form is the continuation of a generous and creative style, though contours have been softened and remodelled to propose a watch that is both sober and contemporary. Entirely developed and manufactured in-house, its haute horlogerie movement incorporates a splendid flying tourbillon.

Since its creation, Manufacture Royale has devised, produced and decorated all its movements in the finest Swiss watchmaking tradition. The new MR03 calibre inside the 1770 watch is no exception to this rule.

Manufacture Royale 1770 Rose Gold & Diamonds

Developed from a blank page by the Manufacture’s engineers and master-watchmakers, it showcases one of watchmaking’s most refined technical sophistications: the flying tourbillon. This aesthetically pleasing and visually spectacular construction leaves the observer free to admire in all its splendour the movement of the escapement and the superlative finishing of its parts.

An essential component since it determines the watch’s precision, here the escapement embraces the ultimate innovation with a pallet fork and escape wheel in silicon. Thanks to its resistance to variations in temperature and to magnetic fields, among other qualities, silicon makes an important contribution to the movement’s performance. In this instance, the calibre also incorporates a screwed balance and a flat balance spring.

The flying tourbillon, which makes one revolution in 60 seconds, is positioned asymmetrically at 7 o’clock. This unconventional choice creates a unique visual tension that gives the watch all its personality. In addition to hours and minutes, the 1770 incorporates a power-reserve indicator for an autonomy of 108 hours or four and a half days. Comprising 208 parts, the MR03 is hand-wound.

This meeting of minds several centuries apart is also evidenced by the dial. Whereas previous collections by Manufacture Royale intentionally left the movement in full view, here it is entirely covered by the dial with just an opening at 7 o’clock through which to admire the pulsations of the flying tourbillon.

Opaline silvered, it is circled by hour markers which have been diamond-polished by hand. The centre of the dial is purposely free from embellishment or inscription so that its colour and texture can be fully appreciated. “Manufacture Royale” is written in capital letters around the flying tourbillon together with the name of the collection, “1770”.

Manufacture Royale 1770 Rose Gold & Diamonds

The sword-shaped hands are partly satin-finished and partly polished for easy legibility. Manufacture Royale is also known for the complexity and immediately identifiable design of its watches’ exteriors.

Comprising a great many carefully executed and hand-finished parts, they are constructed in accordance with a pre-defined principle: the movement is housed inside a case, which in turn is contained in a sometimes mobile structure.

A hallmark of Manufacture Royale, this principle is captured in its essence by the 1770. Two beautifully proportioned brancards hug the case. Secured by functional, visible screws, they extend beyond it, and then gently curve to form the lugs.

The eye is drawn along a succession of smooth curves, beginning with the domed crystal that protects the dial, whose gadrooned bezel delicately overflows to form a rim. Embodied by the brancards, the case middle shows rounded flanks. The crown is polished with the initials “MR” engraved in its centre.

The back of the case is entirely open to reveal the splendour of the movement. The exterior of the 1770 watch is a consummate example of Swiss haute horlogerie in both its aesthetic, imagined by the acclaimed watch designer Eric Giroud, and the flawless crafting and finishing of its parts.

Alternating polished, straight-grained and satin finishes, the rose gold case is set with 148 brilliant-cut diamonds delicately placed in two rows. Made from 20 separate elements, the case measures 43mm in diameter.

Manufacture Royale 1770 Micromegas

Swiss luxury watch brand Manufacture Royale pays tribute to Micromegas, the mythical hero of a short story by Voltaire, by unveiling a complication timepiece featuring a groundbreaking double flying tourbillon rotating at two speeds.

Successfully combining the height of horological technology with the Voltairean philosophical tale from which it takes its name, the 1770 Micromegas has the pleasure and the ambition to inspire.

In this short story, Micromegas was a 120,000-foot tall giant who set out to explore space after being expelled from his own planet, Sirius, as punishment for his dissenting ideas. After visiting Earth, and having observed the arrogance and ignorance of its inhabitants, Micromegas concludes that dialogue and tolerance are the keys to living in harmony.

In this new world premiere complication timepiece, Manufacture Royale chooses to redefine the principles of watchmaking with the new MR04 calibre, with spectacular results. Granted, multiple tourbillons already exist but no pair rotated at two different speeds, until now. The first cage, on the left, makes one revolution in 6 seconds.

The second, on the right, completes its rotation in 60 seconds. The two are connected by a differential which receives energy from the barrel. The regulating organs are therefore in direct contact with the source of power. In addition to its precision, the MR04 calibre delivers a long power reserve of approximately 80 hours that is maintained by automatic winding, an exception on a timepiece of this type.

In addition to its Haute Horlogerie finishes, the MR04 calibre is given NAC surface treatment. Conventional jewels are replaced by ceramic ball bearings. Such new, innovative and unexpected characteristics reflect Manufacture Royale’s uniquely enlightened approach to watchmaking.

The sight of the two tourbillons spinning at contrasting yet regular speeds inspires a strange and hypnotic sensation as to the notion of passing time. Like the giant in his musings, the 1770 Micromegas questions our perception of reality.

This impression is further accentuated by the watch’s design, and the prominence given to the two tourbillon cages. Completely unobstructed, they recall instruments on a racing car. The titanium dial, enhanced with a rubber-effect black varnish, SuperLuminova and Titalyte, underscores this sleek and sporting style, as do the blued and skeletonised titanium hands.

Manufacture Royale 1770 Micromegas

The case construction reflects the identity of Manufacture Royale, and the aesthetic and technical attributes of its 1770 collection, with two brancards that hug the central section then extend to form the lugs.

Assembled from multiple elements, it confirms a powerful, technical dimension taken from the automotive world. Angles and straight edges blend with curves while satin and polished finishes intersect at complex angles in a demonstration of technical mastery and attention to detail.

Lines are tighter, more edgy, as is the notched bezel. Like the dial, it is crafted from titanium for its qualities of lightness and resistance. The back of the case is open to show the new calibre.

Manufacture Royale 1770 Flying Tourbillon

As a tribute to the year Voltaire established his prestigious horology firm in Switzerland, the luxury watch brand Manufacture Royale launches 1770, an exceptional mechanical timepiece integrated with an in-house developed flying tourbillon.

An illustrious figure of the Enlightenment as well as an entrepreneur, Voltaire established his Manufacture Royale in 1770, close to Geneva. The new 1770 brings together this visionary spirit with its hallmark of excellence, and modern watchmaking with its respect for tradition. Wholly manufactured in Switzerland, this collector’s piece highlights the traditional expertise of a centuries-old mechanical art.

Since its creation, Manufacture Royale has devised, produced and decorated all its movements in the finest Swiss watchmaking tradition. The new MR03 calibre which powers 1770 showcases one of watch-making’s most refined technical sophistications: the flying tourbillon.

The flying tourbillon, which makes one revolution in 60 seconds, is positioned asymmetrically at 7 o’clock. This unconventional choice creates a unique visual tension that gives the watch all its personality.

In addition to hours and minutes, the 1770 incorporates a power-reserve indicator for autonomy of 108 hours or four and a half days. Comprising 208 parts, the MR03 is hand-wound. The  calibre also incorporates a screwed balance and a flat balance spring.

Manufacture Royale also cultivates the art of haute horlogerie through the care devoted to the finishing and decorating of each individual component by hand. This is expressed in the MR03 by the fine-sandblasted bridges and mainplate, which are also hand-chamfered and black-polished with satin or perlage finish, and by straight-grained flanks on the inside and outside.

Manufacture Royale 1770 Flying Tourbillon watch hand-wound movement

The back of the movement is embellished with Côtes de Genève decoration achieved by hand and measure 2.4mm wide. Whereas previous collections by Manufacture Royale intentionally left the movement in full view, here it is entirely covered by the dial with just an opening at 7o’clock through which to admire the pulsations of the flying tourbillon.

Opaline silvered or anthracite, depending on the version, it is circled by hour markers which have been diamond-polished by hand. The centre of the dial is purposely free from embellishment or inscription so that its colour and texture can be fully appreciated. “Manufacture Royale” is engraved in capital letters around the flying tourbillon together with the name of the collection, “1770”.

A second iteration proposes an open-worked, slate-coloured dial with different forms. More striking, its various levels lend a bolder technical dimension and offer glimpses of the movement. The sword-shaped hands are partly satin-finished and partly polished for easy legibility.

The 1770 watch in steel comes with an anthracite or open-worked, slate-coloured dial while the rose gold case is matched with an opaline silvered dial. All versions are proposed with an alligator strap with alligator lining and a pin buckle fastening.

Manufacture Royale Volteface 180°

Swiss luxury watch brand Manufacture Royale unveils Volteface 180°, an exceptional timepiece with two faces that can literally perform a volte-face thanks to an original turning system.

The case can be raised so as to pivot around on an axis from which it is suspended at 12 o’clock. The design evokes the spirit of the pocket-watch, not only in its design but also in its use of solid silver, that noble material of which so many timepieces were once made.

Manufacture Royale Volteface 180° watch

The Manufacture Royale style can be seen in its circle inscribed within a square and its deliberately technical aesthetic. In this model, the 40mm round case rests on a square plate with cut corners and circular-grained decoration.

The silver surfaces are protected by a palladium treatment that eliminates any risk of oxidation. The screws, with their strong presence on one side of the case and on the attachments, are made of steel.

Manufacture Royale Volteface 180°

Faithful to an established principle at Manufacture Royale that each new timepiece should follow the line of previous models while exploring a new direction, Volteface 180° shows a contrast between one face, which offers a full view of the movement as the Opera and Androgyne models, and the other, which is innovative because it is the very first that the brand has equipped with a dial.

With its cut-away circles and semi-circles and a large aperture above the tourbillion, the grey dial features a sunray satin finish and hand-polished angles. These innovative features are complemented by a bezel that is itself ground-breaking as it is entirely unencumbered by screws.

Manufacture Royale Volteface 180°
The Volteface 180° watch houses the new MR03 Manufacture calibre, which beats at 21,600 vibrations per hour and has around four days of power reserve.

This manually-wound movement, regulated by the house tourbillion with its escape wheel and anchor made of silicon, is equipped with a special module that gives a synchronised display of the hours and minutes on both faces.

The skeletonised face allows to appreciate fully the refined Haute Horlogerie finishings such as the Côtes de Genève on the plate, the fine sanding on the bridges and the polished finish of the angles.

Introducing MANUFACTURE ROYALE Watches

Manufacture Royale, headed by Arnaud Faivre, is a young & dynamic luxury watch brand that creates exceptional watches. Arnaud Faivre is the CEO and Charles Grosbety is the artist-designer of the brand.

By taking the name of Manufacture Royale, the company pays tribute to famous French writer Voltaire, who was also a remarkable businessman involved in watch making.

MANUFACTURE ROYALE Watches

“Opera “,Répétition Minute Tourbillon

This elite watch brand has set itself the objective of pushing the limits of watch-making standards so as to offer a watch to the connoisseur that will stand the test of time and become, quite simply, the reference by which all others will be judged. The brand unveiled its first timepiece “Opera “, a Répétition Minute Tourbillon model in 2010.

François-Marie Arouet Voltaire

François-Marie Arouet Voltaire (1694 – 1778) had established a thriving watch making business during his long stay in Ferney, close to Geneva. He had produced timepieces for the social elite, and which he hoped would help towards the creation of the ideal society for which the broad outlines can be found in his literary output.

November 21st, 1694 was when Voltaire, born François-Marie Arouet, of middle-class parents with some aspirations of joining the nobility after acquiring a notary’s office, first saw the light of day. He is famous for a brilliant career as a man of letters, but much less so as a successful businessman, trading in luxury items and, in particular, watches.

A brilliant student, he was very soon picked out by the more liberal-minded nobility of the age, who soon welcomed him into their circles. Turbulent, and not a little insolent and sarcastic, the author and poet was widely recognized and appreciated from around 1723 onwards. Of his prodigious output, one really only knows a very small part, and one also forgets that he demonstrated amazing business acumen from a very early age.

This ability to spot future trends was no doubt acquired during his exile in London. During the two years, starting in November 1726, that he spent there, he would meet all the eminent minds of the age including, no doubt, the astronomer and watch-maker, George Graham. He would have felt the first stirrings of the industrial revolution, and clearly he understood the enormous potential that watchmaking could have in the changing world economy.

As someone who frequented the court and as a keen observer of those who moved in those circles, Voltaire was well aware how much the aristocracy in the Age of Enlightenment were taken with philosophy and the sciences, especially the world of watch-making.

It is from Voltaire’s time that the watch became the piece of male jewelry which every member of court needed, to be worn with a certain degree of ostentation, and of which he needed several versions. In addition, such a man of letters could not but be aware that the ‘Encyclopedia, or a systematic dictionary of the sciences, arts, and crafts’ was in preparation by Diderot and d’Alembert (first publication was in 1751). And he would certainly know that the longest article in this savants’ ‘bible’ was devoted to the art of watch-making.

One knows Voltaire for his writing and his penchant for imposing his superior intellect at court, but one knows far less about his capacity as a super salesman. Such an idea is so far removed from what we think of intellectuals that this part of Voltaire’s make-up has quite simply been ignored. However, when he set off for the court of Frederic II of Prussia in 1750, he took with him a large range of those typical French products most sought after by the aristocracy of the time, with the idea of selling as much as possible or of using them to curry favor with the great and powerful.

Following his trip to the court of Frederic II, Voltaire, convinced of the need to marry the useful to the desirable, decided to settle in a place which most people thought of as a sort of retreat. However, his decision in 1758 to set up in Ferney, a village of just forty souls close to Geneva, was well thought through, since it offered several advantages.

The first of these was that the garden of his manor house marked the frontier with the then independent Geneva Republic. Thus, in dire necessity he could always escape into neutral territory. But this was certainly not the main reason for choosing such a region, considered by many as a real backwater with no future, but which had started to be thought of as an area with a potential for attracting members of acceptable society following the scientific works on the surrounding mountains by the Englishman, William Windham.

Voltaire was aware that Swiss watch-making was not up to much and that, in the 1750s, the great names in the craft were French or English. But he also knew – he was someone who kept himself well informed – that recently, in the Jura mountains, a certain number of local watch-makers had started to produce high-quality articles at prices which significantly undercut those demanded by the master craftsmen of Europe’s capitals. Clearly, the business potential offered by the possibility to buy high quality watches and to sell them on with a sizeable mark-up also helped Voltaire choose this otherwise inhospitable location.

One should not be surprised to find that, hardly had he set foot in Ferney, he concentrated his efforts in the manufacture of two items highly prized in the courts of eighteenth century Europe – silk stockings and watches. These two products had three inestimable qualities in common: they were expensive, fashionable and could be transported in quantity in a trunk without significantly increasing the weight.

And in addition, they could be made by local people since the two activities were already part of their expertise. In fact, the local craftsmen in the valleys around Cluses and in the Swiss Jura had long since become masters in the art of weaving and lace-making. As for watch-making, Voltaire was able to take advantage of a disagreement between the city of Geneva and its craftsmen, and attract a certain number of those to Ferney. Thus, with the backing of a highly qualified workforce, Voltaire was able to grow his business and the fame of the town – nowadays known as Ferney-Voltaire – but also those of the craftsmen of the little Geneva Republic.

And Geneva watched with interest the success of the watch-making in Ferney. Based on this, Voltaire was able to persuade the Genevois to concentrate their enameling activities around watch and clock making and to offer watches comprising complicated innovations such as ringing and alarm mechanisms, much in fashion during the second half of the 18th century.

From trying to transform a village into an ‘ideal society’, like other idealists tried to do some years later in Salines d’Arc and Senans in the Doubs department of France (designed by the architect Claude- Nicholas Ledoux in 1762), a now world-renowned industry was born.

It is to pay homage to one of the fathers of modern watch-making that the young Manufacture Royale presents a creation that Voltaire would certainly have appreciated as it combines the know-how of yesteryear with modern day skills married to an ultramodern design that will guarantee sustainability.

Manufacture Royale

The Manufacture Royale has a motto: “E pluribus, unum”, usually translated as “Out of many, one”, which is the very essence of this young company whose roots go back to the time of Voltaire, and where the creativity of its founding aces combine to bring to lovers of beautiful timepieces an object which is simply unique.

United in the search for perfection, these artists have pushed the limits of human creativity to deliver a work capable of increasing the fervor of those who love such objects, and even change one’s idea about time in all its forms.

“Great minds think alike”, said Voltaire, and Arnaud Faivre knows what that means. This not-so-young French entrepreneur, having already a full career behind him whilst working for the best in the industry, wished to take his art to another level and provide timepieces designed to satisfy the very demanding expectations of the real enthusiast.

Having had the responsibility within the most prestigious firms of creating delicate hand-made watch parts, he has decided to launch his own brand. Although daily able to contemplate the most beautiful of objects, he has taken up the challenge of breathing new life into an undertaking dating back to the Age of Enlightenment and which almost everyone has either forgotten or never even knew: the workshop founded by Voltaire in Ferney, a village bordering Geneva but on the other side of the frontier.

Driven by an unquenchable sense of perfection, and an equally consuming passion for the art of watchmaking, he has been joined by similar ‘pure’ spirits prepared to give their all – talent, time and technique – to a project that, in both concept and creation, takes that art to heights until now unimaginable.

The idea is not to produce the next rare, exclusive watch, but to create a work of art in the full sense of the term; to produce an instrument whose objective qualities make it stand out from the crowd. In short, the idea is to push all the relevant concepts to their limits so that, starting from scratch, one can create the ‘ultimate’.

The brand follows a purely intellectual approach to horology where the strength and beauty of the object are the very essence of its nobility, of its pertinence, and of its durability.

Nobility

Manufacture Royale’s emblem, freely derived from the anvil in the rock which, according to the legend, housed King Arthur’s sword, Excalibur, is a powerful sign for those who are capable of forming ideas from symbols. Such a symbol sets the tone for the noble ambitions that the company has fixed for itself.

Attached to these noble qualities, the creative talents of Arnaud Faivre and Charles Grosbéty are associated with the unparalleled skills of master watch-makers Michel Navas and Enrico Barbasini to offer to 12 lucky individuals the chance to possess a masterpiece such as no-one has seen before.

Each in his own sphere, these men, motivated by the idea of the ‘bienfacture’, have put all their skills towards producing something quite simply exquisite in terms of the conception of the movements and the quality of the finish.

Nobility also in the way in which the company has been founded! It’s not just a question of the Manufacture Royale leaving for posterity some one-off exotic mechanisms, but rather some extremely original, but reliable and reproducible concepts and constructs. This is the reason for choosing to combine features that improve the watch’s precision with others that enable the eye and the ear to take advantage of this new level of precision.

Durability

Decidedly innovative, although classic at first sight, the caliber is just 5.45 mm thick for its 32 mm and its ingenious openwork design for the plates and bridges can be observed through the back and front sapphire crystal windows (three mirrors for seven views).

It required three years of research at the Fabrique du Temps by Michel Navas and Enrico Barbasini, two master craftsmen who have spent a lifetime designing exceptional movements for the most prestigious names in the business.

For the Manufacture Royale, these two have created the mechanical heart with manual rewinding, regulated by a tourbillon, which is fundamentally classical, but for which the functional ideas are quite simply audacious.

In effect, if the bottom plate and the bridges have been machined traditionally in brass, rhodium plated and finished by hand, the components of the escapement oscillating at 3 Hz (i.e. 21,600 vibrations per hour) are really avant-garde. For functionality and performance reasons, the company has chosen for the assortiment of the tourbillion cage, an escape wheel and anchor sculpted in silicon.

Durability comes at this price because the components possess longevity hugely in excess of that usually found in the profession, guaranteeing a much higher degree of precision over time. But the originality employed goes far beyond the futuristic materials used.

For this exquisite object, comprising some 319 parts, including 29 rubies, has been conceived in such a way as to offer a power reserve of more than 100 hours. In addition, three significant innovations provide a powerful and clear striking mechanism (hours in A, minutes in C sharp), such as can be found in the finest examples of pocket watches made towards the end of the 19th century.

Pertinence

To be sure that the chimes of a repeater watch can be heard without the user having to put the watch to his ear, it was necessary to completely rethink the way the sound waves were to be created and to change the transmission method in the case.

In this area of acoustics, the Manufacture Royale has focused particularly on the force and regularity of sound by perfecting a very original repeater mechanism comprising three innovations – a more powerful rack spring, a striking mechanism spring longer than that used in traditional watches (6 turns instead of 3) and bells/chimes made with a single internal part using jealously guarded alloys and processes.

With an above average structural strength, the sound deserved a made-to-measure presentation. A work of art is something that has attained the ultimate balance. To be able to grant such a status to this watch, it needed a real craftsman to cast his artist’s eye over the mechanical creation.

When Arnaud Faivre first asked Charles Grosbéty to create the case middle for the watch, he refused. This from a man with 25 years’ experience in creating unique watch-cases, and having carried out several design projects for Maserati, testifies to the level of the challenge.

He is a man who works with traditional methods, i.e. without computer aid, a man whom one would call a watch sculptor. But finally, he was persuaded that the challenge of conceptualizing and producing a casing for significantly increasing the sound capabilities of an extraordinary object, was something he could not say no to.

Working with an iterative process, he conceived an articulated casing, opening and closing like the bellows of an ancient organ. This variable geometry resonance cage, tracing the Fibonacci spiral – a geometric expression linked to the golden number – resembles the exterior of the Sydney Opera House, an architectural masterpiece the artist used freely as an inspiration for creating this part.

Such a watch, with just 12 unique pieces being made, deserves a watchcase worthy of its status. Each one, made from a solid block of the most noble woods, is a reproduction of the Bastille Opera House in Paris, built on the site of the former Bastille Fortress, where the French Revolution all started, but which is also the place where Voltaire was twice imprisoned for his disrespect towards those in power at the time.

Manufacture Royale OPERA

Swiss luxury watch brand Manufacture Royale has announced that it will manufacture its first Opera model series after having unveiled it at the end of 2010. This high complication wristwatch incorporates tourbillon and minute repeater mechanisms.

Manufacture Royale OPERA

Although the first few that were made remain unique pieces reserved for the art market and the manufacturing heritage, Opera now has 5 editions in series production (rose gold, yellow gold, white gold, bicolour gold, and platinum).

Each 100% Swiss-made collection piece is numbered, designed at the Vallorbe manufacturing site, and made strictly identical to the original work of art. With its very original mechanism, Opera is the first timepiece to combine a Minute Repeater and a Tourbillon providing a 108-hour power reserve.

Manufacture Royale OPERA

The ultimate in luxury, each numbered Opera piece has a lifetime warranty from Manufacture Royale, and extra, separate clockwork parts for each piece are filed with the manufacturer’s notary along with assembly instructions.

Manufacture Royale OPERA

Now that it is in series production, Manufacture Royale can offer the Opera timepiece (Répétition Minute Tourbillon) to many amateurs, enthusiasts, and collectors at a recommended retail price of 345,600 CHF (including all applicable taxes) through a select network of the world’s best retailers in the biggest cities.

It is important to note that technical research for waterproofing timepieces while providing optimum sound diffusion of the Répétition Minute has been accomplished, which now meets the needs of well-informed collectors that live in humid areas of the world, specifically in Asia.
