Jaquet Droz Petite Heure Minute Smalta Clara Hummingbird Limited Edition

With this artistic timepiece, Jaquet Droz demonstrates its mastery of the ancestral plique-à-jour enameling technique which first appeared 1500 years ago. This ladies’ wristwatch features a diamond-set gold case.

Jaquet Droz Petite Heure Minute Smalta Clara Hummingbird Limited Edition

Different to the art of cloisonné or champlevé, the plique-à-jour enamelling technique consists of applying the enamel to bottomless molds. A gold dial with partitions of different shapes and sizes is created.

Each empty space is filled with different colors of enamel before undergoing several successive firings. Each passage in the oven gives the enamel its color and density. Just like a miniature stained-glass window, this plique-à-jour process results in a perfectly transparent enamel which plays with light, shadows and reflections, and which gives the motif featured as much volume as it does life. Crafted using this decorative motif, the hummingbird on the white gold dial boasts a subtle gradient of green.

Jaquet Droz Petite Heure Minute Smalta Clara Hummingbird Limited Edition

Jaquet Droz created no less than seven different shades to express its summery and joyful vision of this famous bird. By choosing the Petite Heure Minute as its canvas and with an off-centered dial at two o’clock, the House offers the hummingbird a large space where it can express the richness of its tones and the virtuosity of the plique-à-jour (smalta clara in Latin).

Jaquet Droz Petite Heure Minute Smalta Clara Hummingbird Limited Edition

The self-winding movement featuring platinum oscillating weight with 18-karat red gold applique is visible through the sapphire crystal window on the case-back side.

Part of a numerus clausus limited edition of only eight pieces, this 18-carat red gold watch is set with 100 diamonds on the bezel and pallet lugs. It features a white mother-of-pearl subdial with 18 carat red gold hour and minute hands. Measuring 35 mm, the case sits on a hand-embroidered green satin strap.

Jaquet Droz Grande Seconde Skelet-One Tourbillon, Red Gold

The new Jaquet Droz Grande Seconde Skelet-One Tourbillon watch in red gold displays its watchmaking precision, pushing the founding principal of the skeleton movement to the extreme: a minimum amount of material for the maximum amount of rigidity and light. It has a new skeleton structure design that focuses on straight lines, angles, modernity and perfect symmetry.

Jaquet Droz Grande Seconde Skelet-One Tourbillon, Red Gold

The bridges, finished in black, confer a powerful matte appearance. The tourbillon cage follows the geometry of the skeleton movement, with a triple cross shape which, once a minute, aligns perfectly with its bridges.

Jaquet Droz Grande Seconde Skelet-One Tourbillon, Red Gold

The hands, including the seconds hand that is attached to the tourbillon cage, have been redesigned to be more slender and majestic. They sweep over the two “multi-tier” dials, of which the first is crafted from sapphire and displays the seconds, minutes and hours ring, and is adorned with gold indexes.

Jaquet Droz Grande Seconde Skelet-One Tourbillon, Red Gold

The second dial in Swiss smoky quartz plays with light and empty spaces that contrast with the figure eight shape – the aesthetic signature of the Grande Seconde collection.

To support the body of the watch, the bottom plate has been completely reworked with three objectives in mind: to distribute the circulating forces around the movement, thus ensuring it is sturdy and allowing as much light to pass through as possible.

Jaquet Droz Grande Seconde Skelet-One Tourbillon, Red Gold

It is housed in a red gold 41 mm case and its large opening offers a complete view of the movement. In this creation, Jaquet Droz has worked on down to the smallest detail, with special attention given to the finishes of the bridges and screws.

Jaquet Droz Grande Seconde Skelet-One Tourbillon, Red Gold

The red gold 18K skeletonized oscillating weight, visible from the back yet invisible from the dial, provides the Skelet-One Tourbillon with a 7-day power reserve.

Jaquet Droz Skelet-One Tourbillon “Only Watch”

For the ninth consecutive time, Jaquet Droz is donating a unique piece for Only Watch, a charity sale to benefit the Association Monégasque contre les Myopathies (Monegasque Association against Muscular Dystrophy). This one of a kind Grande Seconde Skelet-One Tourbillon watch is adorned with a plique-à-jour enamel dial.

The tourbillon of the new Grande Seconde Skelet-One Tourbillon “Only Watch” was born of Jaquet Droz’s in-house expertise, but entirely reworked in the purest chronometric approach. Thanks to its realization in titanium and the elimination of the sapphire bridges, the cage has been lightened and optimized with regards to its chronometric functions.

Jaquet Droz Skelet-One Tourbillon “Only Watch”

The balance spring and pallet lugs are made of silicon. Highly open to let light pass through, the tourbillon gives the illusion of being both large and lightweight all at once. Completely revised and placed at noon, it accords the piece a dedicated identity of strength and technicality.

The underlying aesthetic architecture is as technical as it is unique. The skeleton structure is brand new: while the original Skelet-One favored soft and supple curves, the Grande Seconde Skelet-One Tourbillon “Only Watch” focuses on straight lines, angles, modernity and perfect symmetry.

Jaquet Droz Skelet-One Tourbillon “Only Watch”

This very contemporary skeletonization is as technical as its highly precise tourbillon movement can be, furthering the technical and aesthetic consistency of the piece. Its bridges, finished in black, confer a powerful matte appearance. The tourbillon cage follows the geometry of the skeleton movement, with a triple cross shape which, once a minute, aligns perfectly with its bridges.

For Only Watch, Jaquet Droz put to work its Ateliers d’Art as well, in order to produce a highly exclusive plique-à-jour dial, made specially for the famous charity sale.

Once again, whereas the Maison’s most recent plique-à-jour creations featured curves and soft, slightly domed lines, the Skelet-One Tourbillon “Only Watch” is made up of various straight and geometric sections separated by white gold, thus forming a dial which has been entirely polished flat.

The Maison achieved this unprecedented result by applying an extremely fine diamond powder polish to each area of the enamel, the only kind capable of achieving this thickness.

Jaquet Droz Skelet-One Tourbillon “Only Watch”

Every tone of enamel has been painstakingly selected for the model and fired at a very high temperature several times in a row. The choice of these colors therefore owes nothing to chance: a color chart was proposed by Only Watch associating different tones with certain characteristics. The Maison thus translated these variations of red, orange and yellow into an expression of happiness, passion, optimism and even energy—all values that support the cause championed by Only Watch.

Jaquet Droz Bird Repeater 300th Anniversary Edition

Issued in eight pieces to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the founder Pierre Jaquet-Droz, the Bird Repeater, an automaton with a minute repeater, embodies the essence of the House. Its dial in white mother-of-pearl and black onyx features appliqués in 18K red gold.

Multiple bird animations, eggs hatching and the river in the background breathe life into this creation. This weave of elaborate animations, completely engraved and painted by hand, resonates with a minute repeater, which is housed at the heart of its 18K red gold case in 47mm.

Jaquet Droz Bird Repeater 300th Anniversary Edition

In 2012, Jaquet Droz revolutionized wristwatches by creating the Bird Repeater collection. These Haute Horlogerie innovations are the culmination of all the House’s Ateliers d’Art techniques in a single piece, combining traditional watchmaking aesthetic with their one-of-a-kind automaton expertise, in the same movement.

Jaquet Droz Bird Repeater 300th Anniversary Edition

For this anniversary edition, Jaquet Droz returns to the theme of nature to animate its automatons. In the foreground are two robins, one male and one female, like those that can be seen and heard all around the Swiss Valleys. In the background, to the right, is a replica of the farmhouse where Pierre Jaquet-Droz was born exactly 300 years ago.

Jaquet Droz Bird Repeater 300th Anniversary Edition

This historical nod is coupled with a verdant valley and river flowing through it on the left. Again, this is La Ronde, encircling the La Chaux-de-Fonds valley. There is also a Gentian flower in the foreground, whose especially fine wood grain is used by watchmakers for the ultimate polishing of their components. The plant is also used for its medicinal values and alcoholic beverages that have contributed to the region’s success.

Jaquet Droz Bird Repeater 300th Anniversary Edition

Left, right and center, the natural characteristics of La Chaux-de-Fonds are present: red berries and holly leaves, a blue butterfly announcing the arrival of summer and other animals hidden in the scene. A dragonfly and a grasshopper are also featured.

Jaquet Droz Petite Heure Minute “Dragon”

Jaquet Droz has launched the limited edition Petite Heure Minute “Dragon” timepiece created in collaboration with John Howe, the artist best known for his artistic direction of The Lord of the Rings.

John Howe is a legend of fantasy art, as well as the illustrator and conceptual artist of Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies. He has shaped the Dragon in our collective imagination and placed the mythical creature in the context of its millennial history, revealing its past richness as well as its various contemporary dimensions.

Jaquet Droz and John Howe revealed the first signs of this unique partnership in late 2020. The Petite Heure Minute “Dragon” is the fruit of this union. Jaquet Droz gave John Howe the wide-open dial of its model with off-centered hours for the artist to leave his own style, mark and inspiration. On a dark blue Grand Feu enamel backdrop, the Dragon comes to life as its body nestles into the hollow of the 41 mm case, which is available in red gold or white gold.

Jaquet Droz Petite Heure Minute “Dragon”

Born in Canada, 62-year-old John Howe has lived in Neuchâtel for 30 years. His creation reveals a very simple Dragon that returns to the essence of his early designs. It has required the full range of Jaquet Droz decorative techniques to reproduce each relief, contour and volume – a true work of art with unique dimensions and a monochrome pictorial masterpiece, which emerges from a dial with shared dominant tones thanks to the finesse of its features.

Jaquet Droz Petite Heure Minute “Dragon”

The red-tongued Dragon holds a luminous pearl in its claws known as the Dragon Pearl. It is traditionally associated with happiness, abundance, wisdom and knowledge for its owner. In Chinese imperial symbolism, it represented the Emperor’s wisdom and the perfection of his mind. This is both the sacred essence of the Dragon as well as its power.

Jaquet Droz Petite Heure Minute “Dragon”

Today, it enhances these two very limited series of 18 pieces, which are powered by a self-winding movement. The precise attention to detail, in keeping with the Art of Astonishment so cherished by Jaquet Droz, extends to the gold oscillating weight, which has been meticulously hand-engraved to depict the dragon’s tail with its countless scales.

Jaquet Droz Grande Seconde Skelet-One New Versions

Jaquet Droz unveils three new unique versions of its Grande Seconde Skelet-One watch. Each of these exclusive variations is limited to 28 pieces.

Each timepiece boasts a large figure “8” formed by an entirely sapphire dial along with indexes and hands in 18K gold suspended above a brushed hours and minutes ring. At 6 o’clock, the large seconds hand that soars over the sapphire creates the illusion that it is floating, while directly below the tiniest details of a hand-crafted movement can be admired.

Jaquet Droz Grande Seconde Skelet-One Ceramic, Reference J003525545

It is powered by a silicon balance spring and pallet lugs, a double barrel with nearly three days of power reserve (68 hours), including an openwork oscillating weight in 18K white gold which is nestled in the rim of the 41.5 mm case.

Jaquet Droz Grande Seconde Skelet-One Ceramic, Reference J003525545

The Grande Seconde Skelet-One collection is enriched with three new variations: green, sky blue and yellow. Limited to only 28 pieces each, these new color variations can be found on the handmade straps, the watch’s hands and each of the dial’s rail-track.

Jaquet Droz Grande Seconde Skelet-One Ceramic, Reference J003525546

The index and screws on both the green and sky blue versions are made from 18K white gold. For a contrasting effect, the hours and minutes ring as well as the case have been crafted from black ceramic.

The yellow version on the other hand plays with warmer tones. It is unique for its red gold index and screws, its white gold hours and minutes ring and its plasma ceramic case.

Jaquet Droz Grande Seconde Skelet-One Plasma Ceramic, Reference J003525547

Forged in a high temperature oven, the case is embellished with a metallic glow, avoiding the addition of any metal particles. This transformation in color that occurs at a molecular level helps to maintain all the inherent properties of ceramic while simultaneously adding an optimal and harmonious chromatic contrast.

Jaquet Droz Petite Heure Minute Buffalo, the Chinese New Year Editions

Swiss luxury watch brand Jaquet Droz presents four limited edition timepieces as a tribute to the zodiac sign for the 2021 Chinese New Year: the ox.

There are three limited edition pieces in red gold and one in white gold. The Maison selected two distinctive artisanal techniques to represent the new zodiac sign. First, miniature painting, which appears on two 35 mm x 41 mm timepieces with a majestically peaceful ox against a background of mist-covered mountains.

Jaquet Droz Petite Heure Minute Buffalo, the Chinese New Year Editions

This pair of Petite Heure Minute watches provide an ample canvas for micro-painting, both in a 35 mm ladies’ version with a gem-set bezel and lugs, and a 41 mm version without gems.

J005003228_JAQUET DROZ_PETITE HEURE MINUTE PEINTURE BUFFALO_BACK

As for the case-back, the first one’s oscillating weight is personalized with a red gold appliqué. The second one has an 18-karat open-worked rotor that is hand-engraved.

J005023295_JAQUET DROZ_PETITE HEURE MINUTE RELIEF BUFFALO_BACK

The other two feature relief engraving, an artisanal technique cherished by Jaquet Droz. This method is used to create an ox that literally seems to be coming out of the dial as it calmly saunters on to the pitch-black onyx face towards a gold plum tree with red ruby blossoms. The plum tree symbolizes the harmony between humans and nature, the earth and the sky. Rubies stand for bravery and victory, values close to the ox’s heart.

J005024286_JAQUET DROZ_PETITE HEURE MINUTE RELIEF BUFFALO_BACK

The stunning raised tableau is made possible by hand-engraved gold appliqué on these two 41 mm Petite Heure Minutes hour rings. One is crafted in red gold and the other in white gold with a gem-set bezel and lugs. Like on the dials, the Ateliers d’Art also engraved the oscillating weights with the head of an ox on an onyx background.

Jaquet Droz Petite Heure Minute Relief Dragon

Swiss luxury watch brand Jaquet Droz presents a very exclusive interpretation of the Earth Dragon, the fifth element in the 60-year cycle of the traditional Chinese calendar. For this new creation, in a series strictly limited to 8 pieces (Numerus Clausus), Jaquet Droz has chosen its Petite Heure Minute as its canvas. With its off-centered dial at noon, it offers a large surface on which Jaquet Droz has skillfully deployed the magic of its Ateliers d’Art.

Jaquet Droz Petite Heure Minute Relief Dragon

The dial of this “Petite Heure Minute Relief Dragon” was carved from so-called “Spiderman” jasper, named after its web-like mineral veining. The dial, that juxtaposes brown, ocher and burgundy, is entirely cut, softened and polished by hand, making each piece unique in its nuances. It features a smaller dial in absolute black onyx, with two red gold hands. Like a precious treasure in perfect harmony with the dial, we find an onyx bead underneath it, a symbol of well-being, luck and prosperity.

Jaquet Droz Petite Heure Minute Relief Dragon

At the center of the dial, the Earth Dragon appears as a relief appliqué, emerging from the watch’s surface. Hand-engraved in 18-karat solid yellow gold, the mythological animal seems to go over and under the jasper dial in several places, encircled in the fire details of its 41 mm case, made in 18-karat red gold. Each scale and claw, as well as the Dragon’s eyes and tongue, are chiseled by hand.

Jaquet Droz Petite Heure Minute Relief Dragon

Rare among the Jaquet Droz limited series, the creation on the dial side continues on the caseback side, with an oscillating weight also made of Spiderman jasper, and adorned with a gold engraving of the body of the Dragon on the dial side. The watch’s movement is therefore intertwined with the creature’s reptilian body, giving the illusion that they are one and share the same heart.

Jaquet Droz Anthracite Grande Seconde Moon

The Grande Seconde Moon by Jaquet Droz currently has one of the largest followings out of the Maison’s collections. After the Silvery version of the Grande Seconde Moon, the Swiss watch manufacture is now unveiling a new anthracite dial version of this highly sought-after timepiece.

The anthracite dial of this new watch is sandblasted, which makes it more vivid and striking. The dial also casts a striking resemblance to the surface of the moon. The lunar display sits poised at 6 o’clock as the large seconds hand and perpetual date hand fly over it. The hands are blued, as are those marking the hours and minutes. Thus, the hands boldly and seamlessly blend into the cosmic backdrop with a blue reminiscent of outer space.

Jaquet Droz Anthracite Grande Seconde Moon watch

Six white gold stars strike forth against this solid background as a subtle nod to the Jaquet Droz two-star emblem. They are joined by the white gold moon, which was drawn by hand to capture its naturally cratered surface, moved by a so-called ‘astronomical’ Moon Phase. It is powered by a new movement called Mechanism 135 that runs with a 135-tooth wheel.

While a traditional 59-tooth movement accumulates an error of one day every 2 years, 7 months and 20 days, the Jaquet Droz Moon Phase only requires a single adjustment every 122 years and 46 days. The movement’s precision is thus closer to the actual lunar month: 29 days, 12 hours, 44 minutes, 2.8 seconds.

Jaquet Droz Anthracite Grande Seconde Moon caseback

The 43 mm steel case features a sapphire crystal back designed for admiring the movement’s Côtes de Genève finishes and openwork Sunray finished oscillating weight.

With a double barrel enabling the 68-hour power reserve, this Jaquet Droz 2660QL3 self-winding mechanical movement has a silicon balance spring and pallet lugs, making it virtually impervious to magnetic fields and temperature fluctuations.

Jaquet Droz Petite Heure Minute “Tiger”

The Jaquet Droz Petite Heure Minute “Tiger” timepiece evokes the power and grace of the most respected feline in the world.

Jaquet Droz Petite Heure Minute Tiger 18-karat whitegold case with Black Grand Feu enamel dial with miniature painting

Released in two limited series of 28 pieces (a rose gold version featuring ivory Grand Feu enamel dial and a white gold version with black Grand Feu enamel dial), the Petite Heure Minute “Tiger” model displays the full intensity of the Tiger’s glaze in the miniature painting.

Jaquet Droz Petite Heure Minute Tiger 18-karat whitegold case with Black Grand Feu enamel dial with miniature painting

The Ateliers d’Art craftsmen have also been able to express their quintessential expertise by representing (on a black or ivory Grand Feu enamel dial) the intensity of the feline’s gaze.

Jaquet Droz Petite Heure Minute “Tiger”

On a black dial (with case in white gold), a white Tiger with ice blue eyes has delicately been painted using fine brushes, some as thin as a strand of hair. On the ivory dial (with case in red gold), the Tiger displays its famous black and orange fur with green eyes, the most famous characteristics of its species.

Jaquet Droz Petite Heure Minute “Tiger”

The ultimate precision of Jaquet Droz’s Ateliers d’Art enables the fine detail of the gaze in its entirety to appear almost lifelike. The Tiger’s fur is painted with the aid of a microscope. Each hair is individually painted to reproduce the feline’s thick and silky fur. The great care taken in creating the iris and pupil give the illusion that the Tiger’s gaze follows whoever looks upon it, wherever they are.

Jaquet Droz, The Art Of Paillonné Enameling Limited Editions: The “Fleur de Lys” Grande Seconde Paillonnée and the “Fleur de Vie” Petite Heure Minute Paillonnée

This year, Jaquet Droz adds two new limited edition timepieces to its The Art of Paillonné Enameling watch family, which belongs to the brand’s Ateliers D’art Collection. In this new edition, Jaquet Droz welcomes two new motifs: Fleur de Lys and Fleur de Vie.

Joining this year to the Jaquet Droz Ateliers d’Art collection are two masterpieces: the “Fleur de Lys” Grande Seconde Paillonnée and the “Fleur de Vie” Petite Heure Minute Paillonnée.

Jaquet Droz, The Art Of Paillonné Enameling Limited Editions: The “Fleur de Lys” Grande Seconde Paillonnée and the “Fleur de Vie” Petite Heure Minute Paillonnée

What sets these two red gold timepieces apart is the art of paillonné enameling, an age-old decorative technique. The concept is based on another decorative art special to Jaquet Droz, the one used in the Grand Feu enamel dials. First, guilloché work is done on a gold dial. It is then covered in translucent colored enamel that lets the guilloché patterns shine through.

Next, several layers of enamel are applied, each one individually fired in the oven. Then comes the phase that demands the dexterity of Jaquet Droz artisans because every new layer of enamel and firing can introduce cracks or flaws, which would mean starting from scratch. At this stage, the piece still shows slight variations in color. It also depends on each firing process.

Jaquet Droz, The Art Of Paillonné Enameling Limited Editions: The “Fleur de Lys” Grande Seconde Paillonnée and the “Fleur de Vie” Petite Heure Minute Paillonnée

It isn’t until the next phase that dainty motifs cut from a thin gold leaf, the paillons (or strips), are placed by hand one by one to create a figure. Once the design is done, the figures are also covered with another layer of enamel and fired in the same oven. This translucent coat will protect the paillonné motif for centuries to come, as if freezing it in place for all eternity.

Each of these new pieces is extremely limited to a Numerus Clausus series of eight, and Jaquet Droz opted for two distinctive ornamental designs: Fleur de Lys and Fleur de Vie. The former symbolizes kings and emperors. Emblems of a very long heraldic tradition, fleurs de lys are still found from France to Missouri, by way of England, Finland, Germany and Spain.

Model: Grande Seconde Paillonnée “Fleur de Lys”, Reference: J003033437

The latter, the fleur de vie, is a geometric design that has traveled through millennia and across cultures. It’s a beautiful image representing the birth and growth of all living things on Earth. A cluster made of the golden ratio (a design formula for obtaining perfect proportions), it is comprised of overlapping interwoven circles.

Jaquet Droz Grande Seconde Off-Centered Chronograph with Onyx Dial

Introduced by Jaquet Droz in 2019, the Grande Seconde Off-Centered Chronograph is now available with an onyx dial for the very first time.

The perfect black color of onyx allows Jaquet Droz to design a composition from which the smallest detail and slightest reflection can be admired. Such is the case with the hour markers, off-center at 1 o’clock, whose fine white gold appliqué features a circular satin finish.

Jaquet Droz Grande Seconde Off-Centered Chronograph with Onyx Dial

The hands are mirror polished, while those of the chronograph and date are polished. The large central seconds is equipped with an openwork counterweight, and the date with a solid counterweight, evoking a full moon or new moon against a black backdrop like the vastness of space itself.

Jaquet Droz Grande Seconde Off-Centered Chronograph with Onyx Dial

The next highlight of this beautiful “off-center” dial lay-out is the retrograde date display at 7 o’clock that also houses the chronograph’s 30-minute counter.

The Jaquet Droz 26M5R caliber, an automatic monopusher chronograph with column wheel, can be admired through a sapphire crystal case back. This movement features an openwork oscillating weight in red gold and Cotes de Genève decorations on each bridge. These traditional Fine Watchmaking finishes, which today combine with advanced technologies such as the silicon escapement, guarantee increased precision, unaffected by magnetism and temperature variations.

Jaquet Droz Grande Seconde Off-Centered In Black Jade Limited Edition

Jaquet Droz presents a new version of the Grande Seconde Off-Centered in a red gold case with black jade dial.

Marrying the depth of mineral with the warmth of red gold, this new composition of the
Grande Seconde Off-Centered offers a pure, atypical vision of Fine Watchmaking as dreamed up by Jaquet Droz. Its new theme of gold and black jade brings together the principal codes of the Maison in a 43 mm timepiece that breaks with conventions.

Jaquet Droz Grande Seconde Off-Centered In Black Jade Limited Edition

The design of the Grande Seconde was created by Pierre Jaquet-Droz almost three centuries ago. The alignment of the hours and minutes with the independent large seconds is respected but along a slightly slanted axis, from 1 o’clock to 7 o’clock.

Jaquet Droz Grande Seconde Off-Centered In Black Jade Limited Edition

Black jade is an extremely hard stone, thanks to the presence of metal in its composition, and requires lengthy polishing to reveal the tiny silver inclusions that are its hidden secret. Almost imperceptible to the naked eye, they enrich black jade with a unique reflection that allows knowledgeable collectors to distinguish it from onyx.

For their new Grande Seconde Off-Centered model, Jaquet Droz has opted for an elegant dial made from this valued stone.

Worked by hand as a mineral sheet just 1mm thick, it is paired with a red gold case featuring warm, coppery highlights. The two circles and fine hands are also in red gold.

Jaquet Droz Grande Seconde Off-Centered In Black Jade Limited Edition

The black jade dial version of the Grande Seconde Off-Centered watch is limited to 88 pieces.

Jaquet Droz Grande Seconde Quantième New 41mm Models

The iconic Jaquet Droz Grande Seconde Quantième watch, whose off-center display combines a seamless view of the hours and minutes with the precision of a large second hand, is now available in a 41mm version.

In this new size, Jaquet Droz has taken a fresh approach to several design elements. This makes the Grande Seconde Quantième 41 mm an authentic creation, and by no means is it simply a smaller version of an existing model.

Everything, or almost everything, has been given a second look. The redesign begins with the case itself, which is now 41 mm. It was thinned down slightly to make it lighter on the wrist and more compatible with its new diameter. This serves to preserve the proportions, and most remarkably the original piece’s balance and modern feel.

New finishes were also specially developed for this collection. There is a wide range of Grande Seconde Quantième 41 mm watches with Grand Feu enamel dials, a long-practiced art Jaquet Droz has mastered and one of its most recognizable signatures.

The dials now come in ivory tones as well as and deep blue, burgundy and anthracite. Each shade was specially crafted for this latest collection, the result extensive research on enamel powders and hand-firing techniques to produce the exact color variations desired.

The date is displayed at 6 o’clock with an 18-carat red gold applique. In addition to these four colors, there is also a matte black dial, a titanium gray sandblasted version and a last one in sandblasted silver. No fewer than seven models in all are being unveiled at once, forming an entire collection of Grande Seconde Quantième 41 mm timepieces.

Each distinctly different variation gives collectors a chance to satisfy their personal tastes. The first four versions with classic watchmaking aesthetics are on offer with the case, appliques and oscillating weight in red gold on an alligator strap matching the Grand Feu enamel dial.

Jaquet Droz GRANDE SECONDE QUANTIEME IVORY ENAMEL watch caseback view

The other three models feature a contemporary steel case suited for more modern finishes such as matching velvety soft calfskin straps and gold, rhodium-plated or colored appliques that strike dramatic contrasts. They include an open-worked oscillating weight for optimal rewinding and an unobstructed view of the hand-assembled Jaquet Droz self-winding movement that ensures a nearly three-day power reserve (68 hours).

Like almost all of Jaquet Droz’s modern-day creations, a silicon balance spring is used to control the isochronism and make the timepiece resistant to temperature changes, magnetic fields and shock.

Jaquet Droz Grande Seconde Skelet-One New Models in Red Gold (Reference J003523241) and Plasma Ceramic (Reference J003525542)

Jaquet Droz unveils two new versions of its Grande Seconde Skelet-One and each has a unique way of honoring two very complementary stylistic approaches.

Jaquet Droz Grande Seconde Skelet-One New Models in Red Gold (Reference J003523241)

The traditional model features a 41mm diameter case made of red gold. Worn on a leather strap with a novel rubber-like finish, it supplements the watchmaker’s semi-mat alligator straps. It perfectly matches the gray of the bridges suspending the Grande Seconde’s delicate movement.

Jaquet Droz Grande Seconde Skelet-One New Models in Red Gold (Reference J003523241)

Inside the case beats an exclusive Jaquet Droz caliber. Every component of this mechanical movement is meticulously stripped down to its minimum point of resistance. The fully suspended gear train is attached to the movement’s skeletonized bridges raised by an open-worked oscillating weight that lets light shine clearly through.

Jaquet Droz Grande Seconde Skelet-One New Models in Plasma Ceramic (Reference J003525542)

The modern version, on the other hand, is the first time Jaquet Droz has used plasma ceramic on one of its timepieces. This plasma ceramic is just as hard, lightweight and scratch-resistant as high-tech ceramic, a material that has widely stood the test of time.

Jaquet Droz Grande Seconde Skelet-One New Models in Plasma Ceramic (Reference J003525542)

The gray anthracite theme carries over to the new plasma ceramic case held by a sleek and modern gray textile strap.

Jaquet Droz Loving Butterfly Automaton Opal, Unique Pieces

Jaquet Droz unveils two new unique timepieces devoted to opal carrying on the art of mineral dials, a rare artisanal skill it applies to breathe life into Earth’s treasures.

Crafted for both men and women, the mineral dials are made in a number of diameters, but never in great number. Solely released as a solitary piece or limited series, these exceedingly exclusive specimens are unique to Jaquet Droz.

Jaquet Droz paints its timepieces with onyx, jade, serpentinite, jasper, petrified wood, meteorite and opal, using them like pigments on a watchmaking canvas.

Jaquet Droz Loving Butterfly Automaton Opal, Unique Pieces

No two pieces are ever alike. The only thing that stays the same is the process that breathes life into the dials. It begins by selecting the rare mineral. At Jaquet Droz, this happens through a partnership with one of the greatest artisans of semi-precious stones. The stones are collected from the four corners of the globe, from Asia to Europe to the Americas. Then they are brought to Switzerland to start the painstaking cutting process. The most breathtaking sections of the rocks are chosen. They are carefully polished by hand and sliced into disks that are about the size of the final piece. Done with traditional saws and grinders, this simple cut alone takes an hour to obtain an initial dial form.

Every dial is then polished once again and drilled to create tiny openings for the hands, apertures and appliqués. This is a crucial step because the pressure of the hole-making tools can still crack the mineral, depending on how hard it is.

Extreme care must also be taken during the final hand-polishing step when the artisan gradually pares down each dial until it is 0.8 mm thick. Some stones, even the most opaque, become translucent when they are this thin. A miniature burr is used to deburr all around the edge, and then the outer rim is smoothed. This step is equally precarious because the thinnest parts of the stone can still break. It is now almost a perfect circle, entirely done by hand. The mineral dial is polished one last time, and then come the adornments: gold hands, round bands, appliqués or moving parts for automatons.

Throughout this long process, the artisan only uses his own instruments that he usually makes himself. Like expressive extensions of his fingers and artistic dexterity, these tools can send the slightest vibration from a stone right to the artisan’s hand. These are the tools that reveal every dial’s radiance, beauty and subtle reflections.

In the last few months, Jaquet Droz has unveiled a few very limited series that showcase this elaborate work. It can be seen in the Grande Seconde Off-Centered in Black Jade. This very minimal piece is solely adorned with three hands and two gold circles so the power of the jade shines through on a deep black 43 mm dial. It is featured with Chinchilla Red petrified wood on the Loving Butterfly Automaton where warm coppery tones lend an autumnal touch to the Cherub’s animated flight and the chariot pulled by a butterfly. Then there is the Spiderman jasper on the dial of an exquisite Petite Heure Minute issued in a limited series of eight. A hand-carved gold dragon literally moves across this mineral dial.

Opal is exclusively found in Australia. This mineral stone is well-known for its distinct look. The “crystal” opal has a very unique iridescence where it changes colors depending on the viewing angle. For opal with a translucent background, the word “opalescence” was coined to describe the optical diffraction phenomenon.

Jaquet Droz Loving Butterfly Automaton Opal, Unique Pieces red gold model

Jaquet Droz has created two Opal Loving Butterfly Automaton watches with a red gold or white gold case. They are each a one-of-a-kind specimen of opal’s optical properties, an interplay of blue, green, yellow, and pink crystals and the thousands of mid-tones between each color.

Jaquet Droz Loving Butterfly Automaton Chinchilla Red Limited Edition

This new version of Jaquet Droz Loving Butterfly Automaton watch comes in a limited series and features an exquisite mineral dial made of Chinchilla Red, a wood petrified 150 million years ago. This newest chapter in the company’s 300- year exploration of natural fibers showcases its watchmaking mastery and artistry in a series strictly limited to 28 timepieces.

Jaquet Droz Loving Butterfly Automaton Chinchilla Red Limited Edition

The animated objet d’art is inspired by a drawing titled Le papillon conduit par l’amour (Butterfly Driven by Love), which was sketched in 1774 by The Draughtsman, an automaton created by Henri Louis Jaquet-Droz. Today, it is transformed into a three-dimensional journey of ancient mineral. Set against a backdrop of a forest of gold, the piece features a dial made from wood petrified 140-180 million years ago called Chinchilla Red, named after the far-eastern locale in Australia where it is found.

Jaquet Droz Loving Butterfly Automaton Chinchilla Red Limited Edition

Chinchilla Red was formed by fir trees covered in volcanic ashes that were swept away by lava. The product is an exceedingly rare and dense mineral. It takes countless hours of manual work just to make the surface smooth.

This new rendition magnifies the Cherub and the Butterfly, a classic metaphor for labors of love. The chariot symbolizes victory and the butterfly represents Cupid. Like the chariot, the butterfly comprises several dozen stationary and moving appliqués hand-etched by Jaquet Droz artisan jewelers. The scene unfolds on a veritable stage of nature with a set that actually rises up all around the dial. Multiple levels lend the piece a unique depth of perspective that invites the gaze to wander, drift and stray. A striking realism takes shape, proliferating with details that bring the scene to life.

Jaquet Droz Loving Butterfly Automaton Chinchilla Red Limited Edition

The artful watch complication breathes life into an animated nature scene. The butterfly’s wings flutter in time, placed close against the sapphire crystal to make it seem like the butterfly is about to break free and fly out of the scenery. Even the wheels on the chariot turn, but not all of the spokes rotate, which creates an optical illusion that Pierre Jaquet-Droz began using nearly three centuries ago.

The figures are surrounded by a gold backdrop entirely crafted by hand. Each tree spans a mere 0.2 mm – its slender grooves carved one by one using purpose-designed tools– and is individually placed in its very own setting.

Jaquet Droz Loving Butterfly Automaton Chinchilla Red Limited Edition

The autumnal hues of the stone blend with the warmth of the 18-carat red gold. Each of these one-of-a-kind timepieces has a slightly different mineral dial, a full glimpse into the exquisite workmanship of the Jaquet Droz Ateliers d’Art and the art of astonishment created in 1738.

Part of the proceeds from the sales of the Loving Butterfly Automaton will go towards reforestation. Deeply affected by global deforestation and in particular by the fires that have devastated Australia in recent months, Jaquet Droz has announced that part of the sales from the Loving Butterfly Chinchilla Red automaton will be donated to associations dedicated to reforestation and the preservation of endemic species such as “Plant a Tree for Me” or “One Tree Planted”.

Jaquet Droz Chinese Zodiac Collection – Petite Heure Minute Rat and Petite Heure Minute Relief Rat

Jaquet Droz expands their Ateliers d’Art by presenting four variations of its Petite Heure Minute watch that celebrate the sign of the Rat.

Representing renewal, the Rat is the first sign in the Chinese Zodiac calendar. A symbol of passion and ambition, the sign of the Rat will take center stage in 2020 according to the age-old Chinese calendar. To celebrate this special year, four limited series have been created by Jaquet Droz.

In each of these creations, Jaquet Droz has paired the Rat with the pomegranate, which has been regarded as a symbol of life and fertility since ancient times because of the many seeds contained within it. Fertility and continuous renewal are thus the benefits of the pomegranate, the fruit of power and a symbol of life.

Jaquet Droz Chinese Zodiac Collection - Petite Heure Minute Rat and Petite Heure Minute Relief Rat

Four highly exclusive models have now been revealed which celebrate the pairing of the Rat and the pomegranate. They showcase Jaquet Droz’s Ateliers d’Art, whose work brings naturalistic scenes to life in the true spirit of the brand.

The first two models (Petite Heure Minute 35 mm and 39 mm) depict two rats on a bed of leaves dotted with pomegranates, set on a Grand Feu enamel dial. Both variations are produced in red gold, and the 35 mm model is set entirely with diamonds (case and pallet lugs).

Jaquet Droz Chinese Zodiac Collection - Petite Heure Minute Rat and Petite Heure Minute Relief Rat

The case back of both models houses an oscillating weight designed especially for this limited series of 28 pieces. A second scene, engraved in red gold, depicts two rats reveling in a basket of pomegranates, continuing the metaphor of prosperity, abundance and intelligence.

For the 41 mm version, the Petite Heure Minute is available in two other animal-inspired variations that explore the same theme yet feature an onyx dial in a shade of black that is as pure as it is intense.

This incredibly deep black serves as the backdrop for a Rat holding a pomegranate in its hands. These two prestigious pieces are crafted in either red gold or white gold (case, rat, hands, and oscillating weight engraving). In addition, the white gold version is set with 272 diamonds that illuminate its ring and pallet lugs with radiant sparkle while creating contrast with the dark intensity of onyx.

For each of these versions set with jewels, pomegranates are symbolized by rubies, which are arranged in a snow setting to depict multiple arils at the 9 o’clock position, while one larger ruby is used for the seed in the Rat’s hands.

This combination of precious materials (diamonds, gold and rubies) reinforces the natural qualities of the Rat, a passionate, ambitious, creative animal, and a symbol of prosperity.

Each of these creations has been issued in a strictly limited edition of eight pieces, in keeping with the purest tradition of Jaquet Droz’s Numerus Clausus artistic creations.

Jaquet Droz Grande Seconde Quantième Satin-Brushed Blue

The Grande Seconde Quantième watch from Jaquet Droz now features a modern, tasteful and spirited satin-brushed sunray finish, and is available in a diameter of 39 mm or 43 mm.

With the novel color on an up-to-the-minute model, the Grande Seconde Quantième is back with a new blue dial that is perfectly on trend. This exclusive new version was crafted to cast multiple reflections and a new light, creating a unique and unmistakably 21st century sensation.

The innovative blue-gray dial is nothing short of intensely avant-garde. Outstretched beams created using the decorative sunray technique radiate the dial towards the edges of the timepiece, giving it a fresh glow.

This iconic piece for the brand stands out with the distinctive off-center display showing the hours and minutes at 12 o’clock, and the grande seconde at 6 o’clock coupled with a date calendar. The dial’s sunrays originate here and reach out towards the bezel. The sunrays offset at 6 o’clock cast a bluish light on the dial.

Jaquet Droz has expanded this new look to include a version with indexes in 18 carat white gold that curve toward the outside of the dial. It has a slightly different reflection than the steel on the case. This juxtaposition of material accentuates the new Grande Seconde’s nuanced shades and turns it into a source of light.

The final stroke of design ingenuity is the red tip on the date calendar’s hand, which makes it easier to read. Jaquet Droz has also created a separate space for it on the dial.

Modernized yet steeped in legacy, the Grande Seconde Quantième Satin-Brushed Blue is powered by a movement with a silicon balance spring and pallet lugs. It is impervious to both shocks and temperature fluctuations. This timepiece comes in two diameters: The 39 mm combines timeless style and refinement, and the 43 mm creates a bolder contemporary look.

Jaquet Droz Petite Heure Minute Mother-of-Pearl

The Petite Heure Minute Mother-of-Pearl timepiece harks back to its signature off-center displays with a single circle for the hours and minutes positioned at 12 o’clock. The two soft-tinted midnight blue hands swinging inside match the hand-made rolled-edged alligator leather strap.

White mother-of-pearl fills in the dial with iridescent gray and white reflections that add to the look of the moon’s nocturnal glow. It is the perfect luminescence for the surprisingly thin 35 mm steel case.

Finished with a white gold ring, it is an aesthetic expression of the meticulous attention to detail Jaquet Droz lavishes on its creations. The metals shine with slightly different intensities that complement one another to accent the distinctive properties of the mother-of-pearl on the dial.

This latest Petite Heure Minute Mother-of-Pearl exists in two versions with one featuring a bezel studded with 160 diamonds (0.97 carat). As a final touch for the white gold, steel and mother-of-pearl, the diamonds cast flecks of light on the case’s contours for a piece with rare radiance.
This sleekly finished studded model is a classy alternative to the gold and steel version that is more modern and streamlined.

Both versions are powered by a self-winding mechanical movement with double barrels that provide up to a 68-hour power reserve.

Jaquet Droz Grande Seconde Skelet-One Ceramic Unique Piece for Only Watch 2019

Jaquet Droz is donating a very special one-of-a-kind Grande Seconde Skelet-One timepiece to the 2019 Only Watch auction.

Jaquet Droz has been a sponsor of Only Watch since the beginning and donated to all seven editions. The proceeds of the auction go to fund research into Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a degenerative condition with genetic causes that affects thousands of children and young adults worldwide.

In recent years Only Watch has spearheaded fundraising efforts to fight the condition. Of almost $40 million raised by the charity, 99% has gone to fund research. The auction is held every two years and has been a huge success time and again thanks to the generous sponsorship of watchmaking brands. Jaquet Droz is among the prestigious Fine Watchmaking brands that pledge one-of-a-kind timepieces to the Only Watch auction, time after time.

In 2019, Jaquet Droz has chosen to donate an exclusive variation of its new Grande Seconde Skelet-One Ceramic—a piece that marks a watershed in the centuries-old history of the Grande Seconde.

In this one-of-a-kind edition, the rail-track, the gold hour, minute and seconds hands, and the rolled-edge hand-made strap are all reinterpreted in red. Contrasting with the black ceramic of the case and hour ring, red has been chosen as the color of love—and the flag of Monaco, where the charity is based.

Jaquet Droz Celebrates the Opening of Its New Boutique in Harbour City, Hong Kong

Located along the bay of Hong Kong, in the heart of the luxurious Harbour City shopping mall, the new Jaquet Droz boutique features an entirely new design, blending tones of black, beige and gray. A special meeting place for collectors and enthusiasts of Fine Watchmaking, who can now discover the Jaquet Droz universe in an atmosphere marked by modernity and elegance, just like its creations.

The new boutique’s inauguration was celebrated on June 14 in the presence of Mr. Christian Lattmann, the brand’s CEO, Mr. Kevin Rollenhagen, Managing Director of The Swatch Group (Hong Kong) Limited, Ms. Sylvia Yau, Vice-President of Jaquet Droz Hong Kong & Macao and Ms. Veronica Chan, General Manager (Retail & Leasing Business Development) of Harbour City Estates Limited. Film actor Moses Chan, friend and enthusiast of the brand, also figured among the prestigious guests.

Over the course of the ceremony, guests had the opportunity to discover the new Jaquet Droz watchmaking releases as well, including the exceptional Magic Lotus Automaton. The brand’s latest creation is an ode to life and its eternal renewal.

A new development that was designed and assembled in house, this automaton features an exceptionally long animation, lasting more than four minutes. In this time, a naturalist fresco unfolds with all the grace and serene beauty of a Zen garden.

Boasting a heritage of more than 280 years, Jaquet Droz built its reputation with Chinese royalty, especially with the Qing Dynasty. Indeed, it was Emperor Qianlong himself who was the first to translate the name of the “Jaquet-Droz” family into Mandarin – a translation still used today.

Jaquet Droz Lady 8 Petite Collection, New Models: Lady 8 Petite Mother-Of-Pearl and Lady 8 Petite Malachite

Jaquet Droz has unveiled two new versions of the Lady 8 Petite watch, which channel watchmaking elegance into a mere 25 mm of case, while playing with their unique figure 8 design.

The Lady 8 is the exclusively women’s collection by Jaquet Droz, formed around a case in the shape of a figure 8, the symbol of perfection. It’s a geometry dear to Jaquet Droz, also evocative of the Maison’s famous Grande Seconde, whose design is likewise inspired by the soft curves of the emblematic number. In 2018, Jaquet Droz adapted the Lady 8 into the Lady 8 Petite, a precious version that channels the essence of its predecessor into a minimalist diameter.

Cloaked in malachite, the new Lady 8 Petite features a summery, lively, mineral green displayed on a matching leather strap. Malachite is one of the oldest decorative stones used by man and is often associated with luck, wealth and protection. It’s unique for slight variations in hue that stem from the presence of copper in its composition.

At the heart of the Lady 8 Petite collection, the unique brilliance of this dial finds its perfect match in an 18-carat red gold case, specially set with 68 diamonds to highlight its bezel. As a finishing touch to this intensely radiant composition, a moving bead of malachite slides and spins between the fingers, like an allegory of time elusive.

By its side comes a second, equally modern variation of the Lady 8 Petite by Jaquet Droz, featuring mother-of-pearl in top billing. The precious material’s iridescence washes over the dial, which is embellished with a delicate railway that marks the hours and minutes. At 12 o’clock, the piece displays an authentic pearl, whose brilliance is reflected in the 41 diamonds of the gem-set dial.

For the first time, Jaquet Droz gifts its Lady 8 Petite with a caramel-color double-wrap strap, crafted from calfskin. Its white top-stitching recalls the sparkle of the diamonds, lending this mother-of-pearl version a chic, modern allure.

Jaquet Droz Grande Seconde Skelet-One Ceramic

Designed over two and half centuries ago, the Grande Seconde by Jaquet Droz never ceases to amaze. Marrying every facet of its time and era, this ever-evolving piece reinvents details and finishes with each variation, to both surprise and astound.

Its “Skelet-One” skeleton version, presented in 2018, marked yet another break: it was the first time the Grande Seconde did away with its dial. In its place: light, lightness and transparency. The Grande Seconde saw both its architecture unveiled and its power laid bare. Sculptural and enhanced, the Grande Seconde Skelet-One began a new chapter in the history of time as told by Jaquet Droz.

Today, the piece returns with a new ceramic case. With a diameter of 41.5 mm, it’s in perfect harmony with the Grande Seconde Skelet-One’s open movement structure, featuring a black coating that intensifies its power and modern, masculine character. Its straight lines contrast with the ceramic case’s skillful finishing, with a satin-finished top just like its lugs.

In contrast, its polished sides foster a play of light that is amplified by a double sapphire “glass box” on the top and bottom, offering the largest possible opening onto the skeleton movement. Watch lovers will notice that the movement plate stretches all the way around the case, which itself does away with the casing ring. With this new construction, the gear train is entirely suspended and fixed to the skeletonized bridges that cross over the movement.

The latter has been the subject of many finishing details that are evocative of the Fine Watchmaking category to which the Grande Seconde Skelet-One Ceramic belongs. In pure watchmaking tradition and a clear nod to its heritage, the skeleton movement features blued steel screws that fix together the 18-karat white gold hour circle and the sapphire dial. Each of these screws is “indexed,” meaning they are turned towards the center of the dial.

For this new Skelet-One Ceramic version, the indexes are also made of 18-karat white gold. Vertically brushed, the hour circle catches every ray of light, ensuring perfect readability. As for the Grande Seconde dial, it is made from sapphire to offer an unobstructed view of each of the movement’s details.

With the same objective of total transparency, the 18K white gold oscillating weight has been entirely skeletonized to avoid masking the slightest detail of the caliber, which makes a circular revolution around the case. The watch is worn on a blue canvas bracelet.

Jaquet Droz Grande Seconde Dual Time

The Grande Seconde Dual Time presents a stylish and contemporary new look that ushers the centuries-strong aesthetic of the Grande Seconde toward new horizons.

Any travel watch must display dual times zones (local and home time) and the date. Jaquet Droz met this technical prerequisite with panache, in keeping with the immutable aesthetic codes of the Grande Seconde, and so its Dual Time has stood the test of time in accompanying globetrotters on their adventures.

Travel has a historical significance for Jaquet Droz. Some three centuries ago, Pierre Jaquet-Droz, his son Henri-Louis, and Jean-FrédéricLeschot, crossed seas and continents to share their mechanical marvels with the world. From Switzerland to Spain, and from France to China via England, the Jaquet-Droz family from 1758 onward were pioneers of the international clockmaking trade.

The evolution of a piece as iconic as the Grande Seconde Dual Time therefore has a particular significance for the heritage of the brand. In this latest version, the aesthetic has been thoroughly revised. Starting with the same self-winding mechanical caliber (with silicon balance spring and pallet lugs) Jaquet Droz finds a new home for its travel complication, nestled in the bottom half of the Grande Seconde’s signature figure 8 dial.

At its heart the continents are seen flat from the North Pole in an azimuthal projection. The powdery finish chosen by the brand brings the modern-day mappemonde to life with the realism and volume of the Earth’s texture. The continents are depicted on a mirror polished backdrop in a choice of black or anthracite.

In another standout new feature of this new Dual Time collection, the 24-hour home time display is split into two distinct 12-hour segments: white for daytime and black for night, making the reading of the home time more immediate and intuitive. The local time, on the top half of the Grande Seconde dial, is regulated by jumping an hour, which makes it quicker to set the time on arrival at the destination. The date adjusts automatically to this change, and is indicated by a red-tipped hand that sweeps around a circular satin-finish applied ring.
