Mathey Tissot x Hemel Type 20 Collaboration

New York based watch brand Hemel presents a special edition chronograph in collaboration with Swiss watchmaker Mathey Tissot.

Envisaged by Hemel’s founder and Creative Director Marvin Menke, this collaborative timepiece is a truthful homage to the historic Type 20 chronograph made by Mathey Tissot.

Mathey Tissot x Hemel Type 20 Collaboration

Mathey Tissot has an illustrious watchmaking history going back to 1886. In addition to making its own timepieces, this Swiss manufacture was well known as a direct supplier and manufacturer for many well-regarded, high end Swiss watch companies.

The Type 20 is a flyback chronograph first ordered by the French Ministry of Defense as a pilot’s watch. It was a piece of necessary equipment because pilots, at that time, navigated by carefully and accurately timing a flight between various points while in the air. The flyback chronograph enabled a pilot to quickly and easily restart the timing function while the chronograph was running.

Mathey Tissot pioneered the development and manufacture of the Type 20 in 1954 having experience with “flyback chronographs” going back to the 1934.

Mathey Tissot x Hemel Type 20 Collaboration

The Mathey Tissot x Hemel watch is powered by the Swiss made Sellita SW510MBHb hand-winding movement. Rated for a 63-hour power reserve, this 23-jewel caliber has frequency of 28,800 beats per hour. It’s a cam operated bi-compax chronograph movement with a smooth wind and incredibly pleasing clicks on the pushers.

For the 38.5 mm case size and shape as well as the screw-down back, Mathey Tissot opened the archives and made a faithful recreation of their original Type 20 for this collaboration.

Mathey Tissot x Hemel Type 20 Collaboration

The watch comes on a two piece leather strap as well as a bund strap, both hand made in Italy. A collectible box comes standard, also made in Italy.

The Sellita driven Mathey Tissot x Hemel watch is available now in limited numbers. Additionally, fans of the Type 20 aesthetic can expect a Seiko VK64 driven mecaquartz version of this watch in the coming months.

The VK64 movement incorporates a geared architecture on top of a quartz movement for a smooth second hand sweep at a more wallet friendly price point.

Hemel Airfoil Reference HF15

US watch brand Hemel presents the new “Airfoil” chronograph watch developed through the League of Microbrands Facebook group.

The dial of this new chronograph takes inspiration from the 1970s British military pilot watches. The refreshing negative spaces which come in standard black, navy blue and ivory white, hold together and bind austere typographical markers which recall vintage horology like flat threes and fours and the sharp centered M.

Hemel Airfoil Reference HF15

The port side sub dial tracks the running seconds while a starboard side sub dial records elapsed minutes. A simple ceramic bezel insert tracks a second time zone with C3 luminescent 12-hour GMT markers separated by half hour markers. As a cohesive whole, these individual elements contribute to an examination and subsequent celebration of functional minimalism.

Hemel Airfoil Reference HF15

The entire case is polished to a mirror finish from the coin edged rotating bezel to the screw down exhibition case back. Between the piston pushers is a vintage styled crown that hugs the body. The signed detail matches the double signed detail of the buckle, also finished to a high polish.

Hemel Airfoil Reference HF15

The domed sapphire crystal, a first for the HF Series, playfully distorts the chapter ring and hourly numerals in an honestly vintage manner. And of course, the engine inside is the ST19 made by Sea-Gull, a modern evolution of the Venus 175 that originally powered the mid-century flight watches that inspire the Air League.

Hemel x United States Air Force HFT20 Special Edition

On this July 4th, US watch brand Hemel announced their new partnership with the United States Air Force.

Hemel’s HFT20 meca-quartz chronograph has been the brand’s flagship time piece since it hit the market in 2017 and will lead the way for this special USAF collaboration. This watch is a reinvention of the mid-century chronographs issued to military pilots in an iconic form factor shaped out of 316L brushed stainless steel.

Hemel x United States Air Force HFT20 Special Edition

The Special Edition Hemel x USAF HFT20 is offered in a choice of four case backs. The first form has at its center an advanced pilot helmet flanked by two lightning bolts.

Hemel x United States Air Force HFT20 Special Edition

The second version features a flying F22 Raptor in silhouette.

Hemel x United States Air Force HFT20 Special Edition

The next variation of the case back declares the Air Force’s mission objectives in Air, Space and Cyberspace within the backdrop of a constellation of stars and interconnected points which also form the silhouette of a jet.

Hemel x United States Air Force HFT20 Special Edition

The final form is the Air Force’s declaration of its ethos by assembling words that describe the characteristics, spirit and culture shared by US Air Force personnel arranged in a square engraved into the steel of the case back.

Hemel x United States Air Force HFT20 Special Edition

A Special Edition Thunderbirds case back is due later this year. The Thunderbirds are the air demonstration squadron of the US Air Force. The Thunderbirds tour the world performing precision aerial maneuvers and tightly synchronized aerial formations demonstrating American skill and air power. The squadron’s name is taken from a powerful spirit in the form of a bird that appears in the history of several indigenous North American cultures.

As with all Hemel watches, the case employs short, downward curved lugs for greater comfort among more wrists. The flat sapphire crystal is anti-reflective coated and the signed crown is diamond shaped for greater ease of operation particularly with gloved hands.

Hemel x United States Air Force HFT20 Special Edition

Dressed in a 42 mm diameter stainless steel case, the watch features a 120 click uni-directional rotating bezel with ceramic insert. Both the dials and the diamond cut steel hands along with the bezel are embedded with Superluminova C3. The case back includes the watch’s specifications in an outer perimeter around the creative graphic design work. The straps are all hand crafted from Italian leather.

Hemel HF5, HF6 and HF7

Hemel reveals three exciting new references to the widely acclaimed HF (Hemel Flight) Series of aviation inspired watches. Two of the new references are a variation of Hemel’s Stratus model.

The first, reference HF6, is powered by the Seiko VH31 sweeping quartz movement that beats at 4 ticks per second. The second, reference HF7, is powered by the automatic Miyota 9039 that hacks and hand winds beating at eight ticks per second.

Hemel Stratus, Reference HF6 series
Hemel Stratus, Reference HF6 series

The sweeping quartz is identified on the dial by the word “ELECTRONIC” while the Miyota has “AUTOMATIC” printed just above the six. The different movements are also identified by inscription on the screw down case back.

Hemel Stratus, Reference HF7 series
Hemel Stratus, Reference HF7 series

The final new piece, reference HF5, was christened the Brabant. It features the Seiko VK61 movement. Similar to the Seiko VK64 powering Hemel’s HFT20, the VK61 offers a timing hand sweep by way of a geared module sitting on top of a quartz engine.

Hemel Brabant, Reference HF5 series
Hemel Brabant, Reference HF5 series

Dubbed “mecaquartz” movements, the Seiko family of VK movements continue to be popular mainstay of the Hemel brand. For the Brabant, the chronograph subdials are arranged vertically.

This adds variety and a contrasting option to the horizontal subdial arrangement found in the original HF design. The Brabant also has a secondary chapter ring nestled around the dial to create a “roulette dial” appearance. This secondary ring continues a twenty-four-hour scale, perfect for military time.

All three pieces share an identifiable form factor shaped in 316L brushed stainless steel with shaped downward curving lugs. The lug design employed by Hemel provides for greater comfort and fit to any wrist shape or size.

The flat sapphire crystal has anti-reflective coating, and the signed crown is diamond shaped for greater ease of operation, particularly with gloved hands. Both the dials and the diamond cut steel hands along with the bezel are embedded with Superluminova C3.

The straps are all hand crafted from Italian leather. As these straps age, they soften and darken while conforming to the wrist and fitting much the same way a pair of denim jeans wear-in to fit comfortably and look great.

The inclusion of a ceramic inlay instead of the usual aluminum for the 120 click unidirectional rotating bezel reasserts Hemel as an Extreme Value Proposition in the marketplace.

The dials are all informed by mid-century fighter plane cockpit dials with numerals hand drawn by Hemel’s founder and Chief Designer, Marvin Menke.

Hemel Night Ops Watch Collection – HM24 Night Ops and HM2 Night Ops Models

Introduced early this year, the Night Ops family from the US watch brand Hemel now adds two more models. The HM (Hemel Military) Series now joins the HF (Hemel Flight) and the HD (Hemel Dive) Series in this exclusive and covertly styled grouping. The two new field watches employ the 9039 movement, a true no date premium automatic caliber which moves at 28.8 beats per hour.

This caliber which hacks and hand winds is housed in a fluidly curved case and held in place with a brass retaining ring. C3 lume and a curved sapphire lens with an anti-reflective coating top off the dial.

HEMEL 24 NIGHT OPS - Reference HM1NO series
HEMEL 24 NIGHT OPS – Reference HM1NO series

The HM1, simply called the Hemel 24, is based on the military field watches of the late 60s and early 70s with their 24 hour delineated dials. The HM2, or the Hemel Track, recalls the field watches of the mid twentieth century and around the time of the second World War with its simply appointed “railroad track” chapter ring.

Stylish accents like the whisper of a coin edge, the pop of orange in the second hand and the minutely signed buckle ring bring the HM Series to a place of refinement while maintaining more rugged appointments like the 100 meters of water resistance.

The screw down crown is inspired by the treaded wheel tracks of an armored car. With this new iteration of these HM best sellers, the black IP coating further elevates the bead blasted watch from a playing field of so much sameness.

Hemel Night Ops Watch Collection

The Night Ops HFT20 and Hydrodurance models are also exactly the same as their original models save for the black coating. The entire Night Ops lineup is available now for immediate delivery. No preorder necessary.

Hemel HFT20 Night Ops Edition

Hemel unveils the Night Ops edition, a new iteration of their aviation inspired and popular HFT20 watch.

This new watch comes with two bezel options: a ceramic insert timing bezel or a naval grade, 316L stainless steel second time zone bezel. Like the original HFT20, the Night Ops edition case is also 316L stainless steel with sapphire crystal and a screw-down back. The detailed lug design incorporates a subtle bevel and provides an undeniable touch of elegance.

Hemel HFT20 Night Ops Edition watch

The VK64 mecha-quartz movement featuring the sweeping second hand offers the same exact feel of a mechanical time piece.

The Hemel Flight Series HFT20 is a true homage to the legendary timepieces issued to pilots of different Air Forces beginning in the 1950s. With subdials at 3 and 9 o’clock, the dial and bezels provides an uncluttered reading interface with Superluminova C3 for low light conditions. A diamond shaped crown and gridded traction pushers round off the case side. Getting the controls just right was worth the extra time and effort.

Hemel HFT20 Night Ops Edition watch

Engraved onto the solid steel screw down caseback is the watch’s designation and specs. The 42mm case size makes it very wearable and the action of the pushers is absurdly satisfying. A signed crown and buckle come standard. The bezels rotate unidirectionally with 120 clicks for a very engaging ratchet feel.

Since 2017, Hemel has been donating a percentage of its proceeds to the Bob Woodruff Foundation, a nonprofit organization that benefits military veteran and their families.

Hemel Flight Series HFT20

New York based watch brand Hemel expands its watch collection by presenting HFT20, a solid pilot’s chronograph watch with the option of buying up to two different versions of additional rotating bezels.

The 60 minute bezel is black ceramic while the 12 hour GMT and standard bezels are made of naval grade, 316L stainless steel. The HFT20 case is 316L stainless steel with sapphire crystal and a screw-down back. Its detailed lug design incorporates a subtle bevel and provides an undeniable touch of elegance to the watch.

The HFT20 is a true homage to the legendary timepieces issued to military pilots beginning at the dawn of the jet age in the1950s. With subdials at 3 and 9 o’clock, the dial provides an uncluttered reading interface bolstered by Superluminova C3 for low light conditions.

A diamond shaped crown and gridded traction pushers round off the case side. Getting the controls just right was worth the extra time and effort. The treads on the pushers are a practical detail that one doesn’t see often, and it gives the HFT20 the feel of a classic tool watch.

Hemel Flight Series HFT20

Engraved onto the solid steel screw down caseback is the watch’s designation and specs. The 42mm case is comfortable to wear and the action of the pushers is extremely satisfying. Other exterior features include the signed crown and the unidirectional 120-click bezel.

The autonomic model houses the Seiko NE88 automatic movement which is a triple hammer tipped, vertical clutch, column wheel engineering marvel that beats at 28,800 beats per hour (bph). Second version comes equipped with the VK64 mecha-quartz movement.

Hemel Flight Series HFT20

These timepieces can be purchased at a very competitive MSRP of $999 for the NE88 automatic model and $449 for the VK64 mecha-quartz version. Early birds who preorder will get the better deals at the Hemel Watches website starting July 12th, 2017.

After a rewarding collaboration earlier this year with Manhattan based Maison 10 where 10% of every purchase was donated to Toys For Tots, Hemel broadens its altruistic efforts by allowing consumers to choose to which charity Hemel donates. Choices are Toys For Tots, Wounded Warriors and the Bob Woodruff Foundation.
