This unique watch brand is was co-founded by Hermann Grieb, Jochen Benzinger and Georg Bartkowiak.

Founders: Hermann Grieb, Jochen Benzinger & Georg Bartkowiak

Hermann Grieb
Hermann Grieb masters the traditional techniques of watchmaking as very few others today. His expertise lies in the field of traditional restoration of vintage masterpieces, thus preserving and encouraging a precious centuries-old heritage. Enthusiastic collectors from all over the world appreciate his longstanding experience and impeccable craftsmanship. In every single one of the GRIEB & BENZINGER PLATINUM wristwatches beats the heart of the vintage movement freshly interpreted by Hermann Grieb. The filigreed works of art are disassembled and restored; each stage is performed with the utmost care and attention to delicate detail. The combination of old techniques and new functions constitutes the creative bedrock for the exceptional compositions of GRIEB & BENZINGER PLATINUM. The resulting exclusive unicum, the rebirth of a vintage masterpiece, is realized in cooperation with Jochen Benzinger.

Jochen Benzinger
Born, raised, and trained in Germany’s gold city, Pforzheim, Jochen Benzinger has brought his art to perfection. His apprenticeship with Pforzheim’s top engraver wasn’t enough; he has always endeavored to perform at the highest possible level. Motivated by his passion, he taught himself the craft of guilloché, which had ceased to be schooled as a skilled trade in 1961. Today, he justifiably ranks among the most experienced and knowledgeable protagonists of his trade. His profession is his vocation; technical precision and artistic beauty are of equal consequence. Together with Hermann Grieb, he bestows his sense of perfect refinement and detailed finishing upon the distinct GRIEB & BENZINGER PLATINUM timepieces. Jochen Benzinger and Hermann Grieb accomplish the perfect finishing of their movements demanded by their quality and design in collaboration with Georg Bartkowiak.

Georg Bartkowiak
Even during his college years studying economics, Georg Bartkowiak began developing remarkable wristwatch concepts and designs. Many timepiece enthusiasts all over the world have fallen for Georg Bartkowiak’s high demand on select materials, artful details and elaborate techniques. High-flying creations including exclusive designs for royal houses and international VIPs speak for themselves. An expert in technical and creative product development, Georg Bartkowiak has executed remarkable icons and put numerous companies back on the map. Georg Bartkowiak, Jochen Benzinger, Hermann Grieb: this triptych of enthusiastic timepiece connoisseurs, artists and craftsmen is grounded on a long-term friendship. Shared passion, devotion and professional expertise constitute the sound basis of the extraordinary creations labeled GRIEB & BENZINGER PLATINUM.

GRIEB & BENZINGER WORKSHOP
In their workshop, Hermann Grieb, Jochen Benzinger and Georg Bartkowiak blend their outstanding technical skills with traditional craftsmanship and innovative ideas. Come in and experience the nostalgic atmosphere of this enchanting place where time seems to stand still. Historical machines, rather than modern high-tech equipment, underscore the authenticity of their restored and refined masterpieces of watchmaking.

Authenticity
Grieb, Benzinger and Bartkowiak, three connoisseurs of the high art of fine watchmaking, embrace their obligation to conserve centuries-old arts and crafts. They are among a very few in the watch industry to continue precious vintage traditions, making high quality handcrafting and elaborate refinement techniques into contemporary witnesses for their own movement history. They employ the same type of tools their creative precursors did. Thus, Grieb, Benzinger and Bartkowiak honor and encourage the heritage of their trade as well as the original composers of these timeless masterpieces. The most miniscule detail of every GRIEB & BENZINGER PLATINUM wristwatch is lovingly restored by hand or modified and refined according to its new owner’s particular wishes. Historical tools today only found in a museum are utilized for this purpose. A time-consuming development process sees authentic and exclusive masterpieces of long-forgotten craftsmanship created in this way.

Historic Movements
The GRIEB & BENZINGER PLATINUM Edition timepieces are invariably based on historical classics and acknowledged masterpieces originating in the period between 1880 and 1930. Over the course of time, these masterly movements by Patek Philippe and Vacheron Constantin, especially selected for the GRIEB & BENZINGER PLATINUM Editions, have been widely scattered all over the world, waiting to be rediscovered. Each single piece has its own individual story. Some tell of swashbuckling adventures, others of heart-rending amours or even droll anecdotes. But they all have one thing in common: the passion with which they were created. The movements of these timeless masterpieces, their very hearts and souls, remain contemporary witnesses. Plunge into the spirit of days gone by and become part of the history of your timepiece.

The Beginning
The origin of every variation is an idea. Without an idea, the tourbillon would never have been invented. Abraham-Louis Breguet, spiritual father of the tourbillon, was a master of his trade. Hermann Grieb and Jochen Benzinger are also masters of their trade – only 200 years later. The GRIEB & BENZINGER PLATINUM Editions are characterized by variation. The idea of transforming a vintage masterpiece into a unique new timepiece inimitably unites history and craftsmanship. The utilization of contemporary manufacturing and finishing techniques allows the watchmakers to conceptionally modify vintage masterpieces without any loss of authenticity, while technically, physically and artistically redefining them. Against the backdrop of history, Hermann Grieb, Jochen Benzinger and Georg Bartkowiak thus transform their ideas into extraordinary timepieces of strong character and distinctive personality.

The Color Blue as a Source of Inspiration
The movements of the GRIEB & BENZINGER PLATINUM timepieces chiefly originate in the era spanning 1880 to 1930. This period was also known for works of art by great masters such as Pablo Picasso, Claude Monet and Wassily Kandinsky. The color blue was a source of inspiration for these artists: Picasso, for example, reduced his paintings to a minimum in respect to contour and color around 1900. The thus created works belong to the artist’s “blue period”.

Hermann Grieb and Jochen Benzinger find their source of inspiration in old masters of fine watchmaking such as Abraham-Louis Breguet and his apprentice Charles Oudin. Early on, Breguet recognized his apprentice’s talent and devotedly nurtured it. In the ensuing years, Oudin developed and constructed complicated movements for his former teacher. As early as 1820, Charles Oudin constructed blued movements — which are most rare these days. An homage to Oudin, all movements of the GRIEB & BENZINGER PLATINUM timepieces are entirely or party blue platinum-coated. GRIEB & BENZINGER PLATINUM are the only watchmakers worldwide to consistently blue all movements out of respect for this great tradition.

Restoration
The GRIEB & BENZINGER PLATINUM Editions are thus based on their own very distinct philosophy. Each and every filigreed detail of a GRIEB & BENZINGER PLATINUM timepiece is crucial to the successful resurrection of the various elements of its movement. For this reason, all parts are inspected with the utmost care, and it is not until after meticulous restoration or manufacture to specification that they are reinserted into the complete work of art. Thus, even functions and indications are modified upon request. The result is mesmerizing: historical masterpieces in shining new platinum robes, modern interpretations created by masters of their trade in perfect traditional craftsmanship embellished by precious hand engraving and guilloché.A greater tribute paid to the past masters of horology than this most respectful bow to their spectacular works of art.

Finishing
Finishing is the modern way to pay tribute to a historical movement, lending it a distinctive character. GRIEB & BENZINGER PLATINUM is a synonym for individuality with character. Hand-guilloché dials, hand-skeletonized and engraved movements embellished with blue platinum, tempered hands and screws in solid platinum cases show the singularity of these unicums at first glance. These rare masterpieces of horology are formed by a perfect blending of technical skills and the most precious materials known to mankind.

GRIEB & BENZINGER creates unique masterpieces of fine watchmaking with use unconventional tools and machines which requires countless hours. The distinctive characters of these timepieces are one-of-a-kind worldwide. Following the BLACK TULIP SABUDHA and the GREEN INSPIRATION, the masters of GRIEB & BENZINGER have created another custom-designed timepiece for one watch connoisseur in the Emirates: the PHAROS AL ARAB IMPERIAL, inspired by the Arabian Sea.

Anyone who has ever visited the Arabian Sea has certainly fallen in love with its clear water shimmering in various hues of blue and the sparkling spots of sun beams dancing on the water’s surface. Even the iconic Burj al Arab has painted its various hotel floors in shimmering blue tones, with the tinge of turquoise reflecting the beauty of the water’s sapphire hues.

Paying tribute to this, one customer located in the Emirates wished to acquire a glamorous watch that plays with various shades of azure as well as the sparkling effect the sun provides when it touches the surface of water.

Germany based luxury watch atelier The GRIEB & BENZINGER has recently created a very special timepiece for a watch connoisseur in the Middle East as personal gift for the holy month of Ramadan: the GREEN INSPIRATION.

This latest inquiry from a Middle Eastern connoisseur has honored the masterful German watch experts as the meaning of the gift was quite impressive. Paying tribute to this distinguished commission, the watch material and colors for this timepiece were very carefully chosen, putting distinct emphasis on the color green in the center of the design. Green is the traditional color representing Islam.

Grieb & Benzinger – Centurion & Centurion Imperial

Germany based luxury watch atelier GRIEB & BENZINGER presents two new bespoke platinum creations: the CENTURION and the CENTURION IMPERIAL.

As so often the case with GRIEB & BENZINGER’s masterful skeleton watches, these new creations are the result of inspiration from an ambitious watch connoisseur looking for incredible, understated skeleton watches that nonetheless proffer value and handcrafts, but in an “invisible” way. Naturally, they are imposing in a mechanical sense, but the casual observer will already be impressed with their cool looks.

The interesting collector request inspired GRIEB & BENZINGER`s CEO and creative whirlwind Georg Bartkowiak to transfer the brand’s bestseller ― the BLACK TULIP ―into a never-seen-before platinum execution. The classic BLACK TULIP already stunning as it is, has been transformed into a glamorous, yet simultaneously understated, high-end timepiece boasting an all-black appearance.

Grieb & Benzinger Centurion watch

Making it even cooler, the masters of GRIEB & BENZINGER combined this understated look with an expressive, eye-catching bezel pavé-set with 66 red diamonds in the exclusive Princess cut to create a second watch.

Grieb & Benzinger Blue Merit – Unique Watch Based on the Sensational Tourbillon Pour le Mérite by A. Lange & Söhne

Created by GRIEB & BENZINGER, the BLUE MERIT is a sensational and luxurious timepiece based on the legendary Tourbillon Pour le Mérite by A. Lange & Söhne.

A. Lange & Söhne was re-launched in 1994, and to celebrate its 20th century, GRIEB & BENZINGER has created an astonishing masterpiece to respect the prestigious German watch manufacture.

The Tourbillon Pour le Mérite is one of the original representatives of the remarkable comeback of this imperial watch brand, which was resuscitated following almost 50 years of slumber caused by Germany’s historical division.

Pour le MériteTourbillon is a highly complex and sensational timepiece, which became one of the most sought after collectors’ piece. GRIEB & BENZINGER transforms this timepiece into a breathtaking new watch by incorporating the arts of skeletonisation and engraving. It took twelve months of painstaking work by the masters of GRIEB & BENZINGER to realise this project.

Grieb & Benzinger Blue Merit – Unique Watch Based on the Sensational Tourbillon Pour le Mérite by A. Lange Söhne

The movement was completely modified to comply with the style characteristic of GRIEB & BENZINGER. This intense horological work took the artisans’ full attention. In hand-skeletonizing and guilloché the base plate, the team at GRIEB & BENZINGER journeyed to the edge of what is possible.

Since the fine guilloché on the plates and bridges necessitated moving original drillings by less than one-twentieth of a millimeter, the movement needed to be carefully reassembled, adjusted, disassembled numerous times and finally assembled in order to guarantee full, harmonious functioning of the great number of components and hidden bolts and pins.

Grieb & Benzinger Blue Merit – Unique Watch Based on the Sensational Tourbillon Pour le Mérite by A. Lange & Söhne

And as if that were not enough, one more bridge had to be created due to the skeleton works and the modified layout. Every single cock and bridge was skeletonized by hand, guilloché by hand and coated with rhodium and rose gold. Even the gear wheels were also embellished with fine guilloché. Finally, the base plate was coated with blue platinum, a signature element of every single, unique GRIEB & BENZINGER piece.

Grieb & Benzinger Blue Merit – Unique Watch Based on the Sensational Tourbillon Pour le Mérite by A. Lange & Söhne

The skeletonized Sterling silver dial was embellished with a rare Breguet frosted finish created using the classic method, which is only presently practiced in this manner at GRIEB & BENZINGER.

The rose gold-coated steel hands perfectly match the rose-gold tourbillon escapement that has also been modified in colour in tribute to the new GRIEB & BENZINGER style. With the BLUE MERIT tourbillon in solid platinum, GRIEB & BENZINGER has created another breathtaking collector’s item, confirming the brand’s special position within the world of luxury watches.

This ultra-exclusive timepiece by GRIEB & BENZINGER is a one of a kind timepiece and comes with a price of US$ 530,000 (385,000 €).

Grieb & Benzinger Special Edition “St. George” watch – Tribute to Russia’s Patron Saint to Protect the Olympic Games in Sochi

Grieb & Benzinger Special Edition “St. George” watch – Tribute to Russia’s Patron Saint to Protect the Olympic Games in Sochi

Looking closely, the fine details of St. George riding high on his steed defeating the dragon with his lance, can be recognized even without a loupe, fascinating in its fine, handcrafted perfection.

It is so unmistakable, in fact, that GRIEB & BENZINGER’s usual, meticulous two-tone, two-part, hand-guilloché, regulator-style dial is almost relegated to the background. A very special element of this watch is the dial cutaway positioned at 6 o’clock, which reveals a view of the blue platinum-coated base plate, a detail that was borrowed for this special edition from the brand’s exclusive PLATINUM line.

GRIEB & BENZINGER, the masters of skeletonization and bespoke timepieces know how to fulfill the wishes of its clients with traditional technology and exceptional design, creating a unique handmade piece with high exclusivity that allows the client to have his or her personal watch dream realized.

Recently the brand has created an alien themed skeleton watch for a customer who already owns several GRIEB & BENZINGER timepieces. As his son is a huge fan of aliens and space, his personal wish was to receive an alien-themed watch along the lines of the Area 51 legend realized for him by use of GRIEB & BENZINGER’s famous horological techniques.

Using well-known Hollywood movies featuring extraterrestrials as a model, the challenging project was realized using materials that allowed for a metalized liquid appearance.

GRIEB & BENZINGER Area 51 Bespoke Timepiece

Thanks to the extreme talent of Albrecht Bolz, master goldsmith in charge of all GRIEB & BENZINGER goldsmith needs, the final result looks unusual and amazing to say the least. Three-dimensional aliens with metalized surfaces and ruby-set eyes against a backdrop of a grey moon-surface dial with craters set with diamonds open a new era of GRIEB & BENZINGER BOUTIQUE customer design.

GRIEB & BENZINGER Area 51 Bespoke Timepiece

The back of the watch displays the mechanical movement with in-house modifications like all GRIEB & BENZINGER watches created in traditional craftsmanship using historical machines and tools: skeletonization, guilloché and engraving are all completed by hand to achieve an impressive movement with a great deal of character.

GRIEB & BENZINGER Area 51 Bespoke Timepiece

This movement is also blackened and continues the extraterrestrial theme: three-dimensional planets – of course prominently including Mother Earth – are set on the bridges providing an impression of the depths of space.

The unique Area 51 watch features a solid 18K palladium white gold case and secured using an extra-short strap with red stitching.

Grieb & Benzinger Black Tulip Sabudha Imperial

The avant-garde watchmakers of GRIEB & BENZINGER present a new signature bespoke watch to commemorate an auspicious occasion, the third anniversary of luxury magazine Simply Abu Dhabi.

Simply Abu Dhabi is the only English luxury magazine in the emirate of the same name. The BLACK TULIP SABUDHA IMPERIAL, is an exceptionally decorated wristwatch inspired by the majesty, mystery and magic of the Middle East, and prominently spotlights a re-imagination of the most mythical jewel in the world.

This watch is the quintessence of GRIEB & BENZINGER`s singular philosophy: limited to a single, never-to-be-repeated piece, it is decorated using irreplaceable nineteenth-century guilloché tools and handmade with skills that cannot be found beyond GRIEB & BENZINGER`s workshop in Germany. What’s more, it is significant to the publication, tightly wrapped as it is in Middle Eastern culture and the mythology of Europe’s storied imperialism.

Grieb & Benzinger Black Tulip Sabudha Imperial watch

Estimated to fall well within the six-digit US dollar spectrum, BLACK TULIP SABUDHA IMPERIAL is a sumptuous hand-wound watch, whose open-worked design is influenced by Arabic style and in particular inspired by the artistry of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi.

The brilliance and sheer desirability of this solid rose gold wristwatch does not stop there: attention is drawn to the bezel set with black gemstones, which are not black diamonds, contrary to what might be expected.

Black diamonds are actually very commonplace nowadays, so instead of black diamonds, the bezel is set with incredible black spinel gemstones, aligned perfectly with invisible settings and glittering with a deep, ethereal intensity. These very jewels, which are rarely if ever used in watchmaking, have a wonderfully smooth, clean surface.

Grieb & Benzinger Black Tulip Sabudha Imperial watch

But what makes this gemstone even more precious, and what elevates the BLACK TULIP SABUDHA IMPERIAL wristwatch to even greater heights of wonder is the mythology surrounding spinel and the many priceless stones chronicled throughout history.

The Black Prince’s Ruby is one of the most famous gemstones in the world. It is currently mounted, pride of place, upon Great Britain’s Imperial State Crown. And it is not a ruby, it’s a spinel.

As Simply Abu Dhabi is one of the only publications to be distributed to the Royal Palatial Homes and Offices of the ruling families of Abu Dhabi, it made sense to use gemstones with a royal association.

Grieb & Benzinger Blue Whirlwind

GRIEB & BENZINGER presents the BLUE WHIRLWIND, the world’s first watch powered by a visible tourbillon movement by Patek Philippe based on a rare skeletonized tourbillon minute repeater caliber.

Grieb & Benzinger Blue Whirlwind watch

The rare Patek Philippe tourbillon movement found its way to GRIEB & BENZINGER thanks to a hardcore watch collector and a happy coincidence.

It took more than fifteen months from first touching Caliber RTO 27 PS for it to take on its final form – without knowing the kind of hype that this movement would create in 2011: this very same movement caused a giant sensation as it sold within a one-of-a-kind Patek Philippe Tourbillon Minute Repeater in stainless steel, which was donated to the ONLY WATCH charity auction in Monaco 2011. The result was literally sensational: the hammer fell at 1.4 million Euros.

This sensational auction result inspired the masters at GRIEB & BENZINGER to create a breathtaking new wristwatch. This intense horological work took the artisans’ full attention since the fine guilloche on the plates and bridges necessitated moving original drillings by less than one-twentieth of a millimeter, and the movement needed to be carefully reassembled, adjusted, disassembled, and reassembled in order to guarantee full harmonious functioning of the great number of levers.

This movement with 336 individual components not only includes a tourbillon, but additionally a minute repeater mechanism – making it one of the most complicated movements in the world.

This movement was completely modified in the style characteristic of GRIEB & BENZINGER: fully skeletonized, guilloché and engraved by hand. Even gear wheels were embellished with guilloché and the 12 finely guilloché bridges and cocks coated with rhodium and rose gold. As if that were not enough, an additional mysterious wheel, visible on the back side, replaces the original gold drive wheel for the tourbillon.

In hand-skeletonizing the base plate, the team at GRIEB & BENZINGER journeyed to the edge of what is possible and is proud to have created the world’s first visible skeletonized tourbillon based on a Patek Philippe movement. After the skeletonization and guilloché, the base plate was coated with blue platinum, a signature element of every single unique GRIEB & BENZINGER piece that was developed by the firm.

The skeletonized Sterling silver dial in striking regulator style was embellished with a rare Breguet frosted finish created using the classic method, which is only presently practiced in this manner at GRIEB & BENZINGER.

Grieb & Benzinger Blue Whirlwind

These numerous details once again show that the complicated masterpieces of GRIEB & BENZINGER are more objets d’art than watches.

The artisanal crafts carried out by hand here cannot be copied in an industrial way and are thus only to be achieved by the talents of the masters at work at GRIEB & BENZINGER, who work with these long-forgotten techniques every day. Months, at times even more than a year, have been spent by the time a one-of-a-kind GRIEB & BENZINGER Platinum piece has been completed.

With the BLUE WHIRLWIND skeletonized tourbillon minute repeater, GRIEB & BENZINGER has created another breathtaking collector’s item that proves its special position within the industry.

With its solid 43 mm platinum case created in typical GRIEB & BENZINGER style, BLUE WHIRLWIND costs US$ 850,000 net (650.000 € net; 775.000 € incl. 19% VAT).

REGULATOR PHAROS

The REGULATOR PHAROS catches the eye alone by virtue of its unusual visuals. There has never been a regulator that has arranged its hour and minute hands in just this way, and thus it would be very interesting to observe the watch without its dial in order to view the elaborate design of the regulator display. That, however, would be a shame, for this dial comprising various parts decorated in typical Benzinger style is also a work of art that captures the eye.

The hand-guilloché base dial crafted in solid Sterling silver shines with a white Breguet frosted finish, a finishing technique that is currently only in use by Jochen Benzinger. The functional skeletonized part of the dial is crafted in 18-karat red gold, as is the solid 43 mm case. Suggested retail price is 31,000€.

POLARIS

The POLARIS will certainly delight fans of visible technology. The guilloché base dial is crafted using the same methods as the dial of the REGULATOR PHAROS.

GRIEB & BENZINGER Blue Sensation Split-Seconds Skeleton Regulator Chronograph in Solid Platinum

Germany based custom watch brand GRIEB & BENZINGER presents The Blue Sensation, a new unique piece in solid platinum based on a historical Patek Philippe split-seconds chronograph movement.

Hermann Grieb, watchmaking genius and one of the three partners of GRIEB & BENZINGER, has yet again opened his horological treasure chest to charm out a valuable, historical, rare chronograph movement made in 1889 by Patek Philippe and delivered in 1890 to Tiffany.

Countless hours of detailed restoration, hand-skeletonization, hand-engraving, and guilloché were invested.

The fine guilloché work of the plates and bridges necessitated moving original drilled holes by less than one-twentieth of a millimeter, and the movement needed to be continuously reassembled, adjusted, disassembled, and reassembled in order to guarantee full functioning of the great number of levers and wheels despite their elaborate treatment.

The movement was disassembled more than 20 times before being reassembled in order to guarantee all functions, even those applying to the additional modifications.

GRIEB & BENZINGER Blue Wave

Grafenau (Germany) based Luxury Workshop GRIEB & BENZINGER presents a new bespoke watch: The Blue Wave, a Skeletonized Chronograph.

As the worldwide demand for rare, high-quality chronographs has increased, Hermann Grieb —watchmaking genius and one of the three partners comprising GRIEB & BENZINGER — has opened his treasure chest to conjure up a masterpiece of watchmaking: a rare Minerva column wheel chronograph movement estimated to be from about 1925.

GRIEB & BENZINGER Blue Wave Skeletonized Chronograph

In its heyday, Minerva was one of the finest and best chronograph makers in the world. Chronographs had already been in existence since around 1800, however Minerva was one of the first chronograph makers to incorporate a minute counter.

Minerva named its company after the Roman goddess Minerva. Traces of this Roman deity can be found again and again in fine watchmaking—even A. Lange & Söhne has immortalized various depictions of the goddess as a motif or symbol on its most exclusive pocket watch cases.

GRIEB & BENZINGER Blue Wave Skeletonized Chronograph

After countless hours of total restoration, hand skeletonization, hand-engraving and guilloché, the vintage base Minerva movement awakens to new life to become a characteristic new horological piece of art in typical GRIEB & BENZINGER style: the 18-karat gold monopusher skeletonized chronograph christened The Blue Wave.

The company’s typical blue platinum coating of the base plate has also found its way into the new unique piece. The base plate was first hand-skeletonized to its barest minimum in characteristic wave style and the case back hand-guilloché.

All 34 steel screws were polished by hand and classically tempered a cornflower blue over an open flame. Today, steel screws are generally blued by use of galvanic coating.
