Grand Seiko Kodo Constant-Force Tourbillon SLGT001 Unique Piece

Grand Seiko presents the Kodo Constant-Force Tourbillon #SLGT001, a unique piece which will be auctioned in December as part of The New York Watch Auction: SEVEN at Phillips Watches.

Grand Seiko Kodo Constant-Force Tourbillon SLGT001 Unique Piece

Early this year, the Japanese premium watchmaking brand reached a new milestone with the introduction of the Grand Seiko Kodo Constant-force Tourbillon.

Its uniquely innovative movement that delivers a level of stable accuracy unprecedented for Grand Seiko by combining a tourbillon and a constant-force mechanism as one unit on a single axis for the very first time in horological history.

Kodo is the Japanese word for heartbeat. With its unique appearance when in motion and with its carefully designed sound, this revolutionary watch reveals its vitality both audibly and visually, thanks to the open-work design and the sapphire case back.

In this horological masterpiece, the constant-force mechanism and the tourbillon have been integrated together to allow the creation of an overall design that is perfectly in harmony with the values of Grand Seiko and whose technical ingenuity is encased in a watch of great elegance and wearability.

In 2020, Grand Seiko introduced the “T0 Constant-force Tourbillon”, a concept movement incorporating a constant-force mechanism and a tourbillon as one unit on a single axis.

To bring the concept to life in a finished watch required the complete dedication of a team comprising designers, engineers, and craftsmen and women entrusted with the assembly and finishing of the movement and the case.

Each of the 340 components of the caliber was re-examined and, where necessary, re-designed and re-engineered for production. The result is Caliber 9ST1. Not only is Caliber 9ST1 smaller than its concept movement predecessor, but its high accuracy remains stable for longer thanks to the constant-force mechanism.

Furthermore, Caliber 9ST1 sets a new standard of accuracy, verified in a testing procedure during which each movement is tested for a full 48 hours in each of six positions and at three temperatures. This is twice as long as the Grand Seiko Standard.

Each movement is assessed over 34 days to verify its accuracy. When the tests are completed and this new standard has been met or exceeded, the performance characteristics of each movement are defined in the individual certificate provided with every watch.

For the Kodo model unique piece to be sold exclusively by Phillips Auction, SLGT001, the concept was based on musō 無双. Musō roughly translates to “one and only” or “second to none,” a fitting term for the unique piece exclusive to the auction.

Grand Seiko Kodo Constant-Force Tourbillon SLGT001 Unique Piece

This unparalleled model is unique in several ways compared to the global model limited to 20 pieces, reference SLGT003.

First, the multi-component case structure is made entirely of Grand Seiko’s proprietary alloy, Brilliant Hard Titanium. This material, which is used on only the outer case and outer construction of the bezel of SLGT003, is used for both the inner and exterior case components to thoroughly reduce weight and achieve a comfortable feel unique to this model.

Brilliant Hard Titanium is as light as pure titanium but twice as hard as stainless steel and, therefore, highly resistant to scratches. Its color is brighter than the other forms of titanium used for Grand Seiko, allowing the Zaratsu polished surfaces to stand out more prominently.

The bridges, mainplate, and many of the components of the movement are plated in a silver color to create an entirely new aesthetic for the Kodo. A yellow-gold accent for the power reserve and seconds track of the carriage inherits the aesthetic of the T0 concept movement.

The design of the screws for the Kodo model has the appearance of the six arms of the carriages, a trait that cleverly enhances the design but also is pleasant for assembly.

The special screwdriver and screws used have an even application of torque, which the designer of T0 and Kodo, Mr. Takuma Kawauchiya, enjoys greatly. For the unique piece SLGT001, the screws are tempered blue by hand instead of being mirror polished as they are on reference SLGT003.

The carriages for the constant-force tourbillon mechanism are titanium to help reduce weight and improve efficiency. They are blue as well, which is executed through anodic oxidation.

Anodic Oxidation is a surface treatment in which the titanium carriages are subjected to electrolysis to generate an oxide film artificially. Titanium oxide film produces color according to the light refraction index, enabling the production of different colors by varying the thickness of the oxide film. This once again emulates the styling of the original concept T0.

The GS letters are specially engraved by hand on the Brilliant Hard Titanium clasp by Grand Seiko’s very best engravers. The watch is offered with a calf strap specially treated in the same traditional way as was used to create the high-durability material once used in the armor of the Samurai.

Grand Seiko Kodo Constant-Force Tourbillon SLGT001 Unique Piece

The strap’s surface is painted by hand with Urushi lacquer in a multi-coating process that gives the strap a delicate sheen. It is in a brown color specially for this unique piece.

The Grand Seiko Kodo Constant-Force Tourbillon SLGT001 Unique Piece will be auctioned in the upcoming Phillips The New York Watch Auction: SEVEN on December 10-11, 2022 in New York City.

For the future owner of the unique piece Kodo SLGT001, the brand is offering an exclusive trip to Japan to meet its creators at the Grand Seiko Studio Shizukuishi.

A portion of the sale of this unique timepiece will be donated to the Children’s Heart Foundation, a leading organization dedicated to funding congenital heart defect research.

Grand Seiko 44GS 55th Anniversary Limited Edition, Reference SBGP017

Grand Seiko has expanded its Heritage collection by launching a limited edition model commemorating the 55th anniversary of the iconic 44GS watch.

Introduced in 1967, 44GS was the first watch to embody the design code known as the Grand Seiko Style. Now, as part of the year-long celebration of the 55th anniversary of the 44GS, the brand presents a quartz watch that embodies the spirit of this icon.

Grand Seiko 44GS 55th Anniversary Limited Edition, Reference SBGP017

This limited edition stainless steel watch features a remarkable light blue color dial boasting the texture of the sea of clouds that form around the mountains on some mornings in the Shinshu region where this and all Grand Seiko quartz watches are made.

Grand Seiko SBGP017 is powered by a specially enhanced version of Caliber 9F85 that is accurate to +5 to -5 seconds a year. The five-pointed star at the six o’clock position on the dial stands for the watch’s high accuracy.

Grand Seiko 44GS 55th Anniversary Limited Edition, Reference SBGP017

It also has a time difference adjustment function that allows the hour hand to be moved without stopping the seconds hand, thus preserving its high precision when the wearer changes time zones. A backlash auto-adjust mechanism eliminates any shudder in the seconds hand. The date changes in the blink of an eye. A twin-pulse control system allows the minute and seconds hands to extend right to the edge of the dial so that the exact time can be read with ease.

The 40mm diameter case in steel offers the combination of Zaratsu polished and hairline finished surfaces. The fine finish of the movement with its tempered blue screws can be admired through the sapphire case back.

Grand Seiko 44GS 55th Anniversary Limited Edition, Reference SBGW289

The Grand Seiko 44GS 55th anniversary limited edition watch combines the iconic “Grand Seiko Style” with a stunning dial design inspired by the beauty of spring in northern Japan, where all Grand Seiko mechanical watches are made.

Introduced in 1967, 44GS was the watch to embody the design code known as the “Grand Seiko Style”, the set of nine principles which gave Grand Seiko its distinctive look and which still inspires every new creation. Celebrating its 55th anniversary, the 44GS design is commemorated with a limited edition manual-winding watch whose slender case profile pays tribute to the “Grand Seiko Style”.

Grand Seiko 44GS 55th Anniversary Limited Edition, Reference SBGW289

Sakura-kakushi is a brief moment in spring when, in northern Japan, snow and cherry blossom co-exist. The dial of this new creation is a delicate pink with a slight silver hue that, together, perfectly capture the moment when the cherry blossom peeks through the snow as it shimmers and begins to melt in the spring sunshine.

The unique quality of this watch is that it combines a slim 36.5mm profile with all the characteristics that made the 44GS such a memorable and lasting design. The case was designed to take full advantage of the slimness of Grand Seiko’s manual-winding Caliber 9S64, while retaining the flat surfaces and sharp angles of the original 44GS. The bezel, indexes and hands are slender to match the case design, creating a fresh yet classical Grand Seiko look.

Grand Seiko 44GS 55th Anniversary Limited Edition, Reference SBGW289

The movement is assembled by hand by the craftsmen and women in the Grand Seiko Studio Shizukuishi, and the case is Zaratsu polished, also by hand, to give the distortion-free surfaces that have always been a defining characteristic of the “Grand Seiko Style.”

The box-shaped sapphire crystal allows the light to flood in and illuminate the subtle texture of the dial. The individual serial number is engraved on the case back below the lion emblem.

Belongs to the Heritage Collection, this timepiece will be available in June as a limited edition of 1,200 at the Grand Seiko Boutiques and selected retailers worldwide.

Grand Seiko Kodo Constant-force Tourbillon

Grand Seiko presents its first mechanical complication watch that combines a constant-force mechanism and a tourbillon as one unit on a single axis.

Known as Kodo (the Japanese word for heartbeat), this revolutionary watch reveals its vitality both audibly and visually, thanks to the open-work design and the sapphire case back.

Grand Seiko Kodo Constant-force Tourbillon

In 2020, Grand Seiko introduced the “T0 Constant-force Tourbillon”, a concept movement which incorporated this patented mechanism. To bring the concept to life in a finished watch required the complete dedication of a team comprising designers, engineers and craftsmen and women entrusted with the assembly and finishing of the movement and the case.

Each and every one of the 340 components of the caliber was re-examined, and, where necessary, re-designed and re-engineered for production. The result is Caliber 9ST1. Not only is Caliber 9ST1 smaller than its concept movement predecessor but its high accuracy remains stable for longer thanks to the constant-force mechanism.

Furthermore, Caliber 9ST1 sets a new standard of accuracy, in which each movement is tested for a full 48 hours in each of six positions and at three temperatures. This is twice as long as the Grand Seiko and industry standard.

Each movement is assessed over the course of 34 days to verify its accuracy, and when the tests are completed and this new standard has been met or exceeded, the performance characteristics of each movement are defined in the individual certificate provided with every watch.

Grand Seiko Kodo Constant-force Tourbillon

From the inception of the project to the realization of Kodo in its finished form required ten years of skill, dedication and hard work.

Caliber 9ST1 is complex in its engineering and design but is based on the simple insight that the integration of a constant-force mechanism and a tourbillon as one unit on a single axis would deliver practical benefits.

Because there are no wheels or other components between the two mechanisms, there is no loss or change in the torque transmitted from the constant-force mechanism to the balance wheel.

This leads to an increased duration of 50 hours for the constant-force mechanism and a more stable amplitude of the balance. Together, these characteristics deliver the very stable accuracy of the movement. In addition, and crucially for Grand Seiko, the volume of the movement could be reduced, allowing the aesthetics of Grand Seiko to be respected and the watch to be eminently wearable and perfectly comfortable on the wrist.

The integration of the two mechanisms creates a dazzling visual effect. The inner tourbillon carriage rotates smoothly as the balance steadily vibrates at 8-beats per second and the outer constant-force carriage follows its rotation at exact one-second intervals.

The sounds of the escapement and of the once-per-second impulse of the constant-force mechanism harmonize with this regular visual rhythm to create, for both the eye and the ear, a deeply satisfying and re-assuring heartbeat.

There is a powerful yet gentle charm to the sound that is set to a 16th note or semi-quaver which is made possible by 9ST1 being the movement with the highest frequency ever to incorporate a constant-force mechanism.

The constant-force carriage has a ruby on one of its arms, which acts as a small seconds hand. The watch incorporates a hacking function so that the rotating tourbillon carriage can be stopped when the crown is pulled out, allowing the time to be adjusted to the precise second. The hour hand has an extra facet at its tip to enhance its readability. In addition, Kodo offers 10 bar water resistance.

Grand Seiko Kodo Constant-force Tourbillon

The sapphire crystal case back reveals the beauty of the movement’s finishing and its intricate construction.

Thanks to the integration of the two key mechanisms, Caliber 9ST1 has room to breathe within the case and there is sufficient space for light to penetrate, through both the front and back of the case, revealing the beauty of the hand finishing. For the same reason, the delicate interplay of light and shadow that is central to the Grand Seiko aesthetic is there to be enjoyed in the subtle shade gradations, angles and textures. Each major component is painstakingly finished by hand using a variety of techniques to endow the overall movement with the quiet yet enduring sparkle that is the hallmark of Grand Seiko.

The case is constructed from both Platinum 950 and Grand Seiko’s Brilliant Hard Titanium to achieve a long-lasting beauty. Some case parts of both materials are Zaratsu polished and others have a hairline finish; both processes are completed by hand by highly skilled craftsmen and women to ensure that, from every angle, a visually pleasing harmony is revealed. The two case materials combine most evidently at the tapered end of the lugs where a small open space between each lug adds a lightness and unique aspect to the overall design.

Grand Seiko Kodo Constant-force Tourbillon

Grand Seiko’s expertise in hand polishing is evident in the way that the Platinum 950 and Brilliant Hard Titanium surfaces are perfectly harmonized.

The watch is offered with a calf strap specially treated in the same traditional way as was used to create the high-durability material once used in the armor of Samurai. The strap’s surface is painted by hand with Urushi lacquer in a multi-coating process that gives the strap a delicate sheen. The watch also comes with an alternative crocodile strap.

The watch was designed by an elite group of Grand Seiko’s watchmakers and designers who will be a part of the new studio, the Atelier Ginza, to be situated in Ginza, Tokyo, where Kintaro Hattori started his business in 1881. The studio’s aim is to create truly unique watches that reflect the determination of Kintaro that his company should always strive to make the world’s finest watches.

The Grand Seiko Kodo will be available as a limited edition of twenty in October 2022.

Grand Seiko Spring Drive 8 Day Jewelry Watch SBGD209 “The White Lion”

Grand Seiko has unveiled a Spring Drive 8 day jewelry watch from its Masterpiece Collection. Made of platinum and adorned with diamonds, black spinels and white gold, this sparkling wristwatch evokes the beauty and power of the white lion.

Grand Seiko Spring Drive 8 Day Jewelry Watch SBGD209 “The White Lion”

The texture of centre dial is inspired by the male white lion’s mane. The strong and angular lugs speak of the power of the lion. 112 diamonds are embedded in the upper surfaces of the case and a further 60 baguette diamonds surround the dial on the bezel. No fewer than 94 diamonds are set in the dial, contrasting with the 26 black spinels to create a stunningly intricate effect. The seconds hand is tempered to a perfect grey color to match the overall tone and a single brilliant-cut diamond is set into the crown.

On the dial, the carefully selected spinels and baguette diamonds are tapered and serve as minute and hour markers. All these gems are set by hand between a very thin pair of 18kt white gold rails.

Grand Seiko Spring Drive 8 Day Jewelry Watch SBGD209 “The White Lion”

The diamonds on the bezel are also set by hand with a precision that allows the light on their table surfaces to flow evenly, as if the bezel were a single surface. The same high level of jewelry expertise is to be seen on the lugs where the diamonds are set so exactly that they also seem to create a single, flat surface.

The case is made of Platinum 950 and has the sharply defined edges and prominent ridges that are among the central characteristics of Grand Seiko. This is achieved by the cold forging of the case and by a special kind of Zaratsu polishing that was designed especially for Platinum 950.

Grand Seiko Spring Drive 8 Day Jewelry Watch SBGD209 “The White Lion”

The watch is powered by the Spring Drive 8-day Caliber 9R01 which delivers an accuracy rate of ±10 seconds per month and offers a power reserve of eight days.

The movement incorporates three barrels arranged in sequence to deliver the extended power reserve which is shown by an indicator visible through the sapphire crystal case back along with the exquisite finishing of the one-piece bridge, designed in the image of Mt. Fuji.

Grand Seiko Caliber 9F 25th Anniversary Limited Edition, Reference SBGN007

In 2018, Grand Seiko introduced its first quartz GMT watches from the sports collection. It was comprised of the limited edition SBGN001 and two regular production models (SBGN003 and SBGN005). In the same year, the brand also presented SBGN007, a limited edition quartz GMT watch from its Heritage Collection.

Grand Seiko’s ultimate quartz family, the 9F series was launched in 1993. In 2018, a newly developed GMT movement (9F86) was added. The limited edition SBGN007 commemorates the 25th anniversary of the quartz 9F collection from the Japanese premium watch brand. This timepiece belongs to the Grand Seiko Heritage Collection.

An ideal timepiece for the international traveler, Grand Seiko SBGN007 features a stainless steel case. Measuring 40mm diameter and 12.2mm thickness, it is slightly larger than SBGN001. It is topped with a dual-curved sapphire crystal glass. This model does not feature the external GMT/24H bezel. The watch features a date window at 3’o clock.

Grand Seiko Caliber 9F 25th Anniversary Limited Edition, Reference SBGN007

Limited edition of 1,200 pieces, Grand Seiko SBGN007 boasts a green dial adorned with the quartz symbol pattern. It features an arrow-shaped, vivid yellow color hand for the second time-zone display. As this model does not have an external bezel, the main dial features the 24-H scale by employing indices for even numbers and Arabic numerals for odd numbers.

The Caliber 9F 25th Anniversary Limited Edition watch is equipped with a special Caliber 9F86 movement in which the normal ±10 seconds per year average is enhanced to ±5 seconds per year. A gold 5-pointed star is embellished above the 6 o’clock marker as a symbol of the high precision rate. The movement allows the owner to move the hands without stopping the watch when setting it to local time.

Secured with a screw-lock crown and screw case-back, the watch offers a water resistance of 100 meters. In addition to the Grand Seiko lion emblem, the letters “Caliber 9F 25th Anniversary Since 1993” and a serial number 001/1200-1200/1200 are displayed on the case back.

The “Edo purple” shade of the GMT hand is also famous as the color of the headband wrapped by Sukeroku, in “Sukeroku Yuen Edo Sakura”, one of the celebrated Kabuki Jūhachiban (“Eighteen Great Plays”).

Grand Seiko Steiff Teddy Bear Watch (SBGX00C1)

In 2001, Seiko Watch Corporation created a special Grand Seiko watch in collaboration with Steiff, the iconic German luxury toy brand. This special timepiece was exhibited at the 12th International Jewelery Tokyo in 2001 along with STEIFF’s Platinum Teddy Bear.

Established by Margarete Steiff in Giengen in 1880, STEIFF has been known for its luxurious animal-themed toys for children, especially the teddy bears. The iconic “Bear 55 PB” was launched in 1902. Designed by Margarete’s nephew Richard Steiff, it was the world’s first plush teddy bear with movable arms and legs. In 2002, the company celebrated the 100th anniversary of the original teddy bear.

In the Grand Seiko Teddy Bear Watch project, Seiko Watch Co. and Margarete Steiff GmbH partnered with Japanese Toy Company Takara Co., Ltd. and Platinum Guild International.

Founded in 1955, Takara Co., Ltd. was the sole distributor of STEIFF in Japan. In March 2006, the company merged with Tomy Co., Ltd. to form Takara Tomy. Today, it is one of the world’s leading toy manufacturers.

The 12th International Jewelery Tokyo was held from 24 to 27 January, 2001. During this event, STEIFF displayed its “Platinum Teddy Bear”, sporting a platinum tiara and a cloak made of platinum cloth. Two “Platinum Teddy Bears” and Steiff Teddy Bear Watches were produced.

One set was created for Platinum Guild International for promoting platinum jewelry at the organization’s exhibitions nationwide. The second set was dedicated to the “Teddy Bear Collection Exhibition” to mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of Steiff teddy bears. Later, it was put up for a charity auction and the proceedings were donated to the Japanese Red Cross Society.

The Steiff Teddy Bear Watch was based on Grand Seiko SBGX017. This Platinum GS quartz model was introduced in 1997. Equipped with the 9F61 movement, it features 35.5mm diameter case, silver dial and alligator leather strap with platinum buckle. The company selected this model to create the Grand Seiko Steiff Teddy Bear Watch (reference SBGX00C1).

The Grand Seiko SBGX00C1 timepiece has a silver dial with the inscription “Steiff Teddy Bear” just above the 6 o’ clock. The case back features the “Steiff Teddy Bear” text and an engraving of a teddy bear.

During the 12th International Jewelery Exhibition Tokyo, one SBGX00C1 platinum watch was worn on the arm of STEIFF Platinum Teddy Bear. The total amount of platinum jewelry and costumes, including watches, was equivalent to 4.8 million yen.

Grand Seiko 44GS 55th Anniversary Limited Edition: High Beat (reference SLGH009) and Spring Drive (reference SLGA013) Models

To mark the 55th anniversary of the iconic 44GS watch, Grand Seiko has released two limited edition timepieces. The first one is a High Beat model (reference SLGH009). The second creation in this series is a Spring Drive watch (reference SLGA013).

These horological marvels belong to Grand Seiko’s Heritage Collection. Both timepieces are made of Ever-Brilliant Steel, which is more corrosion resistant and therefore better durable than the grade of steel used in most high-end watches. Its brilliant white hue is an appropriate choice for the much-admired Grand Seiko Style.

Grand Seiko 44GS 55th Anniversary Limited Edition: High Beat (reference SLGH009) and Spring Drive (reference SLGA013) Models

Both anniversary models feature identical motifs on their dials. Deeply etched, this distinct pattern evokes the elliptical orbit of celestial bodies. The sharp edges of the dauphine style hour and minute hands provide a pleasing contrast with the gentle curves of the dial pattern. The gold-toned centre-seconds hand captures the serene passage of celestial time.

These watches will be available at the Grand Seiko Boutiques and selected Grand Seiko retail stores worldwide in February 2022.

Grand Seiko Hi-Beat 36000, Reference SLGH009

Celebrating the 55th anniversary of the Grand Seiko Style, which was established in 1967, this commemorative automatic watch houses Caliber 9SA5. The Hi-Beat 9SA5 movement offers a power reserve of 80 hours.

Grand Seiko 44GS 55th Anniversary Limited Edition High Beat (reference SLGH009) watch

The Hi-Beat model was created by the Grand Seiko Studio Shizukuishi studio. Through the transparent sapphire crystal back, one can admire the beautifully finished bridges of Automatic caliber 9SA5. The finishing technique used in this graceful movement is called Shizukuishi River Finish, naturally inspired by the breathtaking beauty of the river in Iwate Prefecture.

Grand Seiko 44GS 55th Anniversary Limited Edition High Beat (reference SLGH009) movement

The reference SLGH009 features a 40mm diameter and 11.7mm thick case made of Ever-Brilliant Steel. The dial color is blue. It displays centre hour, minute and seconds. The date window is positioned at 3 o’clock.

This timepiece is limited to 550 pieces.

Grand Seiko Spring Drive, Reference SLGA013

Grand Seiko’s SLGA013 is a brand-new Spring Drive timepiece with Caliber 9RA2, a new spring drive movement introduced in 2021. It has the same high functionality as Caliber 9RA5 but with a slimmer size.

Thanks to the repositioning of the power reserve indicator to the back of the movement and the reduction of the height of the hands above the dial, this caliber allows a slimmer case profile.

Grand Seiko 44GS 55th Anniversary Limited Edition Spring Drive watch (reference SLGA013)

The watch marks the 50th anniversary of the acclaimed Grand Seiko Style. The Caliber 9RA2 offers a power reserve of 120 hours with a precision rate of +/- 10 seconds per month.

The see-through sapphire crystal back reveals the beautifully finished bridges. Named Shinshu Frost Finish, this pattern is inspired by the beautiful winter scenery around the Shinshu Watch Studio, the birthplace of all Grand Seiko Spring Drive watches.

Grand Seiko 44GS 55th Anniversary Limited Edition Spring Drive watch (reference SLGA013) movement

Made of Ever-Brilliant Steel, its case has 40mm diameter and 11.7mm thickness. The dark grey dial boasts a “centre three-hand” layout with a date widow at 3 o’clock. The new Grand Seiko Spring Drive watch (reference SLGA013) is limited to 550 pieces.

Grand Seiko Spring Drive ‘White Birch’, Reference SLGA009

Introduced in 2021, the Grand Seiko Heritage Hi-Beat 36000 Automatic reference SLGH005 is one of the most talked-about creations in the recent history of the prestigious Japanese brand. Nicknamed ‘White Birch’, it boasts a captivating textured dial design inspired by the beautiful white birch forests of Japan. This extremely popular watch also won the Men’s Watch prize at the 2021 Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève.

Following this legacy, Grand Seiko now presents a new Spring Drive watch with the same dial design. Powered by the latest and finest Spring Drive Caliber 9RA2, the new model is inspired by the atmosphere of a white birch forest but in a subtly new way. It particularly echoes the feeling of the forests of Shinshu, home to the studio where all Grand Seiko Spring Drive watches are made.

Grand Seiko Spring Drive ‘White Birch’, Reference SLGA009

Meticulously crafted by master artisans, the delicately textured dial and the tempered blue seconds hand of the new ‘White Birch’ watch reveal an artistry that is matched by the ‘frost’ finishing of the movement. This exquisite spring drive calibre is clearly visible through the sapphire case back.

Grand Seiko Spring Drive ‘White Birch’, Reference SLGA009

The delicate texture of the movement’s finish reflects the frost that winter brings to the trees in Shinshu. The bridge lines and hole edges are diamond-cut to reflect light from all angles and the jewels and the tempered blue power reserve indicator add a quiet sparkle that is a delight to behold. Caliber 9RA2 delivers a power reserve of up to 120 hours and is accurate to ±10 seconds per month.

The watch’s design evokes the Grand Seiko Style defined back in 1967 with the celebrated 44GS. However, it also announces an important step forward in Grand Seiko design. To be known as the Grand Seiko Evolution 9 Style, this new grammar of design takes Grand Seiko’s ideals of beauty, legibility and wearing comfort to new levels.

Grand Seiko Spring Drive ‘White Birch’, Reference SLGA009

Its Zaratsu polished, distortion-free mirror finish and delicate hairline finish alternate to give the case a quiet and harmonious glow. Its powerful hands and grooved, prominent markers ensure perfect legibility. The case’s center of gravity is lower, and the bracelet has just the right width and depth to ensure that the watch sits easily and securely on the wrist.

Grand Seiko Spring Drive ‘White Birch’, Reference SLGA009

Starting from February this year, both High-Beat and Spring Drive ‘White Birch’ timepieces will be the part of the new Grand Seiko Evolution 9 Collection.

The Spring Drive ‘White Birch’ watch will be available at the Grand Seiko Boutiques and selected retail stores worldwide in February 2022.

This new Spring Drive watch from the Elegance collection takes inspiration from the winter scenery of Shinshu region, the home to the Shinshu Watch Studio where all Grand Seiko Spring Drive watches are created.

Shizuri-yuki is a Japanese term used to describe a winter season view when snow spills down from the branches of trees, creating a shimmering cascade of light. With its 18k rose gold case graced by lines of diamonds and with the glide motion seconds hand that moves silently and continuously across the white textured dial, this new Grand Seiko Elegance Spring Drive model evokes the gentle winter landscape of Shinshu and the transient beauty of Shizuri-yuki.

The 18k rose gold case carries a total of 53 diamonds delicately set by hand by the highly skilled craftsmen and women in the Shinshu Watch Studio. The diamonds are arranged so that they gradually decrease in size from the center of the case to the lug ends, creating a beautiful, flowing effect. Furthermore, the surfaces of the diamonds are perfectly aligned so as to create a quiet sparkle that exemplifies the high level of craftsmanship for which Grand Seiko is renowned.

Grand Seiko Heritage Watch with Tree-Rings Dial (reference SLGA008), Seiko 140th Anniversary Limited Edition

As part of the 140th anniversary celebration of SEIKO Watch Company, Grand Seiko has recently released a high-beat watch boasting a tree-rings inspired dial.

Now a new rose gold model with the same design theme joins the exclusive 140th Anniversary collections. The new creation (reference SLGA008) is powered by a new Spring Drive movement, Caliber 9RA2.

Grand Seiko Heritage Watch with Tree-Rings Dial (reference SLGA008), Seiko 140th Anniversary Limited Edition

The new Grand Seiko Spring Drive 5 Days Caliber 9RA2, which inherits all the performance characteristics of the Spring Drive Caliber 9RA5 introduced last year in celebration of the 60th anniversary of Grand Seiko.

The new setting of the watch hands and the power reserve indicator moved to the movement’s back gives the watch a slender and elegant feel upon observation of the dial and enhances the dial’s exquisite craftwork signature to Grand Seiko.

Grand Seiko Heritage Watch with Tree-Rings Dial (reference SLGA008), Seiko 140th Anniversary Limited Edition

The beauty of the movement and its spectacular Shinshu Frost Finish are revealed through the sapphire crystal case back. The delicate texture of the movement’s finish reflects the frost that winter brings to the forests in Shinshu where all Spring Drive watches are made. The bridge lines and hole edges are diamond-cut to reflect light from all angles and the jewels and tempered blue power reserve indicator add a quiet sparkle that is a delight to behold.

Caliber 9RA2 allows the new timepiece to be slimmer than any other current automatic Spring Drive creation. The movement achieves its slimness thanks to the re-design and re-positioning of the Magic Lever. This Offset Magic Lever is positioned away from the center of the movement to reduce its thickness. The new setting of the hands also contributes to the slender profile of the watch.

The movement may be slim but it has enhanced rigidity and shock resistance thanks to the new layout of the gear train towards the center of the movement and the One-Piece Center Bridge that holds them together.

Caliber 9RA2 incorporates two barrels, one larger and one smaller, that deliver a power reserve of up to 120 hours. The ±10 seconds per month accuracy rate is made possible by a new IC with a built-in temperature sensor, and to the selection of highly stable quartz oscillators that have gone through a three-month aging process.

The quartz oscillator and temperature sensor are vacuum-sealed into a single package to eliminate even the slightest temperature difference between the two to maintain the watch’s accuracy at the highest possible level.

The miniscule but visible variations in the dial’s depth reveal the subtlety of the dark and light tones of the wood grain. The brown tone of the dial perfectly matches the 18k rose gold case to give the watch a gentle and warm feel.

Grand Seiko Heritage Watch with Tree-Rings Dial (reference SLGA008), Seiko 140th Anniversary Limited Edition

The watch’s design is true to the Grand Seiko Style defined back in 1967 with the celebrated 44GS but its heritage is combined with a contemporary feel that perfectly expresses the quiet but strong character of Grand Seiko. Its powerful hands and grooved, prominent markers ensure perfect legibility. The Zaratsu polished, distortion-free mirror finish and the delicate hairline finish alternate on the case to create a quiet and harmonious glow.

As is Grand Seiko’s tradition, the star mark at six o’clock indicates that the indexes are solid gold, as are the GS letters, the calendar frame and the clasp. The hour hand is large in volume and crafted to align exactly with the grooved and prominent hour markers, enhancing the legibility of the time.

The watch will be available as a limited edition of 140 at the Grand Seiko Boutiques and selected Grand Seiko retailers worldwide in November 2021.

Grand Seiko Masterpiece Spring Drive SBGZ007 (Seiko 140th Anniversary Limited Edition)

Celebrating Seiko’s 140th Anniversary, Grand Seiko presents a limited edition Spring Drive watch from its Masterpiece collection. Featuring a platinum case, this elegant timepiece has a deep blue, star speckled dial inspired by the spectacular night skies of Achi, a mountainous village located in the southern part of Japan’s Shinshu region.

This masterpiece watch was made by the elite team of watchmakers at the Micro Artist Studio in Grand Seiko’s manufacturing facility in Shiojiri, located in the same Shinshu region as Achi. It is equipped with the Spring Drive manual-winding caliber 9R02, which was first presented in 2019 to mark the 20th anniversary of Spring Drive.

Grand Seiko Masterpiece Spring Drive SBGZ007 (Seiko 140th Anniversary Limited Edition)

The blue dial has a remarkable depth that is accentuated by the quiet and delicate sparkle of what appear to be distant stars. A unique manufacturing and finishing technique combining stamping, plating and painting gives the dial a different aspect at each and every viewing angle, just as does the sky above Achi. The Platinum 950 case is carefully engraved with a pattern which is replicated in different directions on the Zaratsu polished case, again capturing the exquisite order and ever changing aspect of Achi’s starry skies.

Refined and slim, its case has a diameter of 38.5mm and depth of 9.8mm.The hour and minute hands and hour markers are made of 14k white gold to ensure that their brilliance endures for decades. The Grand Seiko name, the minute markers and all the other markings are etched into the dial.

The power reserve indicator is on the back side of the movement next to the barrel whose shape echoes that of the bellflower that is the symbol of Shiojiri. The rims of the bridges, the holes for the rubies and the screws are all expertly hand polished to a perfect mirror finish and the tempered blue screws stand out in contrast to the hairline finish of the bridges to heighten the perception of the perfection of the engineering.

Grand Seiko Masterpiece Spring Drive SBGZ007 (Seiko 140th Anniversary Limited Edition)

The caliber also incorporates an 18k yellow gold plaque on the lower bridge, which carries the engraved words “Micro Artist”. If the owner wishes, this inscription can be replaced with a word of his or her choice.

The movement is assembled and adjusted by the craftsmen and women in the studio including Katsumi Nakata, who has been recognized as a Contemporary Master Craftsman and is now the third member of the Micro Artist Studio team to have received the Medal with Yellow Ribbon from the Japanese government.

The outstanding 84 hour power reserve of Caliber 9R02 is realized thanks to the Dual Spring Barrel, in which two mainsprings are set in parallel within a single barrel, and the Torque Return System. When the mainspring has been fully wound and the torque output is at its highest, approximately 30% of the available power is not needed to maintain the precision of the watch and is in effect wasted in a normal movement. The Torque Return System uses this energy to rewind the mainspring, resulting in an increase in the power reserve. In Caliber 9R02, this system is activated for 48 hours after the mainspring has been fully wound.

The watch will be available as a limited edition of 50 at the Grand Seiko Boutiques in August 2021.

Grand Seiko Spring Drive 8 Day Jewelry Watch, Reference SBGD207

In 2020, Grand Seiko released its first jewelry masterpiece, a platinum cased Spring Drive watch whose design took inspiration from the winter mornings in the Shinshu region which is home to the Micro Artist Studio where the watch was created. Now Grand Seiko has chosen another unique aspect of the studio’s stunning and varied natural surroundings as the motif of another jewelry watch to celebrate the 140th anniversary of the company’s establishment.

This new jewellery masterpiece takes inspiration from the infinite shades of green on the pristine, crystal clear water of Mishaka Pond, which is near to Shiojiri where the Micro Artist Studio is located. Japanese painter Kaji Higashiyama’s famous 1982 work “Vibrant Green” perfectly depicts the pond’s green beauty. Inspired by the Mishaka Pond’s enchanting beauty and serenity, this new Spring Drive timepiece boasts a green mother-of-pearl dial and the green garnet indexes.

Grand Seiko Spring Drive 8 Day Jewelry Watch, Reference SBGD207

The carefully selected green garnets and tapered baguette diamonds that accompany them act as minute and hour markers. They are set into an 18k white gold base and are separated by 48 additional diamonds and 12 garnets that are individually set around the markers to further enhance the depth and beauty of the dial. The gems are placed exactly horizontally so that they catch the light evenly. The garnet at twelve o’clock is slightly wider than the rest to ensure the perfect legibility of the time.

Grand Seiko Spring Drive 8 Day Jewelry Watch, Reference SBGD207

The Spring Drive 8 day Caliber 9R01 delivers an accuracy rate of ±10 seconds a month. It offers a power reserve of 192 hours when fully wound. Caliber 9R01 incorporates three barrels arranged in sequence to deliver the extended power reserve which is shown by an indicator visible through the sapphire case back along with the exquisite finishing of the one-piece bridge, designed in the image of Mt. Fuji, and the rubies, which evoke the lights of Suwa City below Shiojiri.

Grand Seiko Spring Drive 8 Day Jewelry Watch, Reference SBGD207

The case is made of Platinum 950 and is finished with a form of Zaratsu polishing that is specially adapted for platinum and makes possible the distortion-free surfaces and sharp ridges that are an intrinsic part of the Grand Seiko aesthetic.

This Grand Seiko masterpiece is offered in a limited edition of 15 and will be available in the Grand Seiko Boutiques in May 2021.

This stunning wristwatch is powered by the innovative mechanical hi-beat Caliber 9SA5, which offers a power reserve of 80 hours. First presented in 2020, Caliber 9SA5 incorporates the entirely new Dual Impulse Escapement, the Grand Seiko free-sprung balance, and the horizontal gear train.

This Hi-Beat 36000 watch will be available in March 2021 at the Grand Seiko Boutiques and selected retail stores worldwide.

Grand Seiko Limited Edition Seiko 140th Anniversary – A Re-Creation of the First Grand Seiko in 18k Rose Gold

In 1881, Seiko’s founder Kintaro Hattori established his own company, “K. Hattori”, to wholesale and retail imported timepieces and, just twelve years later, he established a factory which he called Seikosha, to produce his own clocks and, later, watches. Seiko will be celebrating its 140th anniversary in 2021.

To mark the 140th anniversary of its foundation, the Japanese watch maker has proposed a new re-creation of the first Grand Seiko from 1960. This commemorative timepiece will be released in January 2021.

Grand Seiko Limited Edition Seiko 140th Anniversary - A Re-Creation of the First Grand Seiko in 18k Rose Gold

This ultra-thin watch features an 18k rose gold case with 38mm diameter and just 10.9mm thickness. The hand-winding Caliber 9S64 provides a power reserve of 72 hours with an accuracy rate of +5 to -3 seconds per day. The “S” trademark is visible through the sapphire crystal set into the 18k rose gold case back.

The case and indexes are in 18k gold and the anniversary is marked by the trademark “S” engraved on a gold plate set into the movement’s bridge. Kintaro Hattori registered this mark in 1900 as the symbol of the Seikosha factory. The watch will be presented in January 2021 as a limited edition of 350 in the Grand Seiko Boutiques worldwide.

Grand Seiko Kintaro Hattori 160th Anniversary Limited Edition

Grand Seiko pays tribute to Seiko’s founder Kintaro Hattori on his 160th birth anniversary with a limited edition timepiece.

Seiko’s founder Kintaro Hattori was born in central Tokyo in 1860. In 1881, at the age of just 21, he set up his own company, “K. Hattori”, to wholesale and retail imported timepieces and, just twelve years later, he established a factory which he called Seikosha, ‘The house of precision’, to produce his own clocks and, later, watches.

To mark the 160th anniversary of his birth, Grand Seiko created a limited edition Spring Drive watch. It was made by the elite team of watchmakers at the Micro Artist Studio. The watch features a softly rounded case made of Platinum 950 and it is Zaratsu polished to a perfect distortion-free finish. The sapphire crystal glass is dual-curved and each surface is shaped to ensure perfect legibility. With a thickness of just 9.6mm, the platinum case of the watch measures 37.5mm diameter.

The intricate pattern on the delicate dial surface offers varying depths. A tradition since the 1960’s, a star mark located at six o’clock denotes that the indexes are of solid gold. The interplay of light and shadow is an essential part of the signature of every Grand Seiko. The application of seconds markers enhance the legibility. The indexes and the hour and minute hands are in 14K white gold and are specially cut to create a sharpness that amplifies the enduring beauty of the gold.

The watch is powered by Caliber 9R02 which is assembled, adjusted and finished by hand by the craftsmen and women of the Micro Artist Studio. It delivers a power reserve of 84 hours thanks to the Dual Spring Barrel in which two independent thin, long mainsprings are set in parallel in a single barrel, and the Torque Return System.

When the mainspring has been fully wound and the torque output is at its highest, approximately 30% of the available power is not needed to maintain the precision of the watch, and is in effect wasted in a normal movement. The Torque Return System uses this energy to rewind the mainspring, resulting in an increase in the power reserve. In Caliber 9R02, this system is activated for 48 hours after the mainspring has been fully wound.

The barrel shape echoes the bellflower that is the symbol of Shiojiri where the studio is located. The caliber also incorporates an 18k yellow gold plaque which carries the engraved words “Micro Artist”. These words can be replaced with any other words on request.

The Grand Seiko Kintaro Hattori 160th anniversary watch will be available in January 2021 as a limited edition of 50 in the Grand Seiko boutiques worldwide.
