GoS Norrsken – Northern lights for Ukraine

Swedish watch brand created a unique timepiece to show its support to Ukraine.

The Northern lights for Ukraine project started in the first days of March 2022 after a discussion between Patrik Sjögren from GoS and the artist Sunflowerman (Matthew Miller).

Patrik selected a special dial for the project – a guilloche dial that has been through a lot in the GoS workshop, with microscopic battle-scars as evidence. After many attempts, he was finally able to apply the northern-light blue tone with a clean and horizontal line across the irregular guilloche pattern.

The yellow tone was then created by gold plating the other half of the dial. Mathew finished the art-piece with his trademark Sunflowerman color-wash technique in the colors of the Ukranian flag.

The art-piece and watch were both finalized just three weeks after the project was started thanks to hard work and support by movement manufacturer Schwarz Etienne who provided the movement with its special engraving.

The set will be auctioned as a combined lot during Sotheby´s “Important Watches: Part II” with bidding opening on April 27th in Geneva. All proceeds will be provided to Red Cross Ukraine.

GoS Norrsken Limited Edition

Swedish independent watch brand GoS presents its new model, the Norrsken. Named after the Northern Lights, this timepiece captures the appearance of swirling green lights dancing across northern skies.

The watch draws upon the expertise of various artisans and encompasses a choice of a Damascus steel dial or a hand-guilloché dial. A hand-blown index ring, formed of Swedish crystal, allows an extraordinary degree of luminescence to pass through its clear surface, flooding the dial with vivid green tones.

The Norrsken is available with a choice of case rings, dials and bezels. At the heart of the watch is the Calibre GoS03, featuring premium finishing and a customised micro-rotor hand-forged in Damascus steel. GoS, based in Linköping, Sweden is proud of its Scandinavian heritage.

Over the years, the company has created watches inspired by Scandinavian history and nature. Its latest watch, the Norrsken, the Swedish term for the Northern Lights, emulates the appearance of this natural phenomenon.

The Norrsken, housed in a 41.5mm stainless steel case, encompasses an array of materials. It is available with a Damascus steel dial, a material synonymous with GoS, or a hand-guilloché dial. This latter option is produced in collaboration with the renowned guilloché specialist, Jochen Benzinger. Both dial options evince the same captivating green hue. GoS can also manufacture the case in precious metals upon request.

The Damascus steel dial is hand-forged and features a unique Northern Lights motif. It combines matte black and high-gloss polished emerald green tones and depicts the animated motion of the Northern Lights swirling colours. An index ring, encircling the dial, is produced by Swedish master craftsman, Mikael Kenlind of Vas Vitreum.

This clear index ring is hand-sculpted and hand-blown in Swedish crystal, a rare form of glass seldom seen outside of the country. Twelve small fixation points hold the index ring in place, allowing a degree of flex and thereby mitigating the risk of damage should the watch be subject to impact.

James Thompson and his company, Black Badger, again based in Sweden, provide an insert ring cast from solid Badgerite. This solid lume material, developed in collaboration with Swiss firm, RC Tritec, the makers of Super- LumiNova, is positioned behind the glass index ring.

The clear glass ring refracts light into the case, creating a mesmerising green shimmer. A further application of lume is positioned below the index ring near the exposed dial area, enhancing the readability of the indexes. A special colour of lume and method of application were developed specifically for this watch.

Spear-shaped hour and minute hands convey the prevailing time, while the GoS triskele indicates the running seconds. Both the index ring and seconds display are recessed within the dial which is filled with SuperLumiNova. With the Northern Lights Damascus steel dial, a series of Super-LumiNova dots are positioned below the GoS triskele seconds hand, producing an animated effect as the hand rotates.

Like the dial, the case of the Norrsken is also available in two variants. One option features a highly polished stainless-steel case ring, while a second version is endowed with a Damascus steel case ring. Another option is to request Black Damascus treatment of the damascus steel case parts. The bezel and the caseback are facetted, accentuating the appearance of the fluted case ring.

The bezel is available in a choice of highly polished stainless steel or Damascus steel, both finished in the GoS workshop. Furthermore, all pin buckles are forged of Damascus steel, produced by GoS, and feature the brand’s triskele logo.

The caseback is fitted with a pane of sapphire crystal allowing the wearer to view the automatic movement within. The Calibre GoS03 is made by movement specialist Schwarz Etienne and customised by GoS. It encompasses premium finishing, including hand-polished bevels and specific modifications requested by GoS, including a dedicated escape wheel bridge.

GoS has equipped the movement with its own micro-rotor, hand-forged in Damascus steel. Its upper surface is suffused with shades of green and black, matching the appearance of the dial. The micro-rotor sits flush with the neighbouring bridges, mitigating the height of the movement and providing unrestricted views of numerous beautifully finished components. The ratchet wheel is adorned with the GoS triskele emblem. When the mainspring is fully wound, the watch will run autonomously for 86 hours.

The Norrsken is supplied on a sumptuous strap, handmade in Stockholm from high-gloss, polished salmon leather. Finally, the watch is presented in a hand-blown Swedish crystal presentation box, once again, handcrafted by Mikael Kenlind of Vas Vitreum.

GoS Skadi – Limited Edition Watch Paying Tribute to the Norse Goddess of Winter

This new limited edition watch model from Swedish watchmaker GoS combines black damascus steel with red gold and glacier blue luminous Mother of Pearl to illustrate the landscape ruled by Skadi – the Winter Goddess in Norse Mythology. Skadi is pronounced Skah-dee and she personifies strength, courage, and endurance. Her most mentioned attributes are her bow and skis as she is very skilled at using them both to hunt and to engage in battle.

GoS hands and movement components in Johan Gustafsson´s damascus steel have been featured in previous GoS models but they are re-introduced with further refinement in Skadi. The engraving on both case lugs and movement is done by master knifemaker Anders Hedlund, who also does the outstanding engraving work on Sarek Trollius. GoS introduce another master craftsman to the GoS collective as master goldsmith Peter deWit cast the gold parts for the case and also fit the premium quality blue sapphires in all indexes and the Damascus steel crown.

GoS developed the black damascus steel during 2018 and it was first introduced in the collaboration with Singer Reimagined and the unique piece Track1 Black Damascus for OnlyWatch 2019. A damascus steel pattern can become less visible when coated and the contrasts within the pattern is lost. However, the qualities of the industry strength PVD coating that GoS use beautifully show the contrasts of the pattern. The black polished elements of the patterned steel are indeed deep black but also sparkle with light reflections.

The dial is made from white Mother of Pearl, which is both colored and backlit through clever use of modern Swiss Super-Luminova. This technique was developed by Patrik Sjögren during 2018 and was first introduced in Sarek Glacier during Baselworld 2019. The icy blue glow has a close resemblance to the light reflections in a snowy landscape during a moonlit night.

The collaboration with Master knifemaker Anders Hedlund continues as he engraves both the sides of the lugs with a viking knot pattern and the Damascus steel bridges of the movement.

The movement bridges are manufactured from one solid piece of Johan Gustafsson´s artistic damascus steel. The finishing is done by Patrik Sjögren who has further refined the finishing from damscus steel movements GoS introduced in 2012. The goal is to achieve a maximum contrast of the damascus steel pattern and to combine that with high gloss polished bevels. Anders suggested to draw inspiration from Viking shield decoration and to fill the engraving with gold for maximum contrast to the damascus steel.

During 2018, Anders Hedlund received “Best in Show” award at the Solvang Invitational custom Knife show and also received the “Wooden Sword award” presented by the book “Knives 2018”. That award is widely regarded as being acknowledged as the world’s best knifemaker.

GoS watch straps are normally made from moose leather sourced by GoS and the strap for Skadi is no exception. However, the brand offers alternatives to further personalize the watch with straps in different leather qualities and stitching. The Swiss made deployant buckle is in solid 18k gold and the supplier´s patented and elegant snap lock mechanism has been proven to be flawless by major premium watch brands.

GoS Sarek Trollius

GoS presents Sarek Trollius watch in partnership with Swedish artisan Anders Hedlund, who is regarded to be one of the world´s best knife makers and engravers.

Anders suggested the use of polished 24k gold pins, which is something premium knife makers use to embellish their work. The working-name of the new watch became Sarek Trollius as Trollius Europaeus is a flower with yellow buds that is common in the Sarek National Park of northern Sweden. The scrollwork for the watch is similar to the petals of the Trollius flower and the gold pins emulate the yellow buds. Patrik Sjögren learned the technique to be able to introduce gold pins onto the dial as well.

GoS introduced the Sarek collection in 2016 with dial patterns that emulated the elaborate and ever-changing waterways in the Sarek National Park. A number of variations and bespoke elements have since then been introduced as well as dials that resemble the famous northern lights of Lapland. For Sarek Trollius, both the dial and the rotor counter weight are made from Johan Gustafsson´s dense and organic damascus steel. The dial is in Johan’s wildflower pattern and the rotor is a cutout from a traditional ladder woodgrain damascus. Sarek Trollius is the first GoS watch to feature engraved movement parts.

GoS watch straps are normally made from moose leather sourced by GoS. However, the Sarek collections dress watch qualities are sometimes better matched with a tapered strap in a more glossy leather. The brand now offers alternatives to further personalize the watch in both leather qualities and stitching to match or contrast the dial´s color range. The deployant buckles are Swiss made and supplier´s patented and elegant snap lock mechanism has been proven to be flawless by major premium watch brands.

The Sarek chapter ring and the case ring both draw inspiration from authentic Viking bracelets and brooches. Sarek is also the first GoS model to feature the new GoS crown, which is shaped much like the form of a Viking sword hilt. The neck of the GoS crown is deeply recessed into the case, thereby securing the crown and mechanism from side impacts. The hands are high gloss polished in a Dauphine finish with a center ridge which bears a closer resemblance to the Viking arrow and spearheads that inspired the first GoS hands. GoS can also manufacture hands from Johan´s hand forged steel as a bespoke element.

The Sarek is powered by a Soprod A10 movement that has been customized with a GoS triskele rotor. The dark GoS rotor has a circular satinization as finish and is equipped with an additional counter weight handmade from either German silver or damascus steel.

GoS Watches – Sarek Glacier and Sunset

GoS introduced the Sarek collection in 2016 with dial patterns that emulated the elaborate and ever-changing waterways in the Sarek National Park. A number of variations and bespoke elements have since then been introduced as well as dials that resemble the famous northern lights of Lapland. Northern lights are by far the most famous light phenomenon of the north, but the colorful Autumn Sunsets can be just as spectacular.

GoS tempered damascus steel dials have deep and dynamic colors, but one limitation is that they do not emit any light. Mother-of-pearl is translucent and let both color and light through the material. GoS is the first watch brand to use this property to present mother-of-pearl dials that glows in colors. Patrik Sjögren has developed the combination during two years to perfect two favorite themes, sunset orange and ice blue, as seen in glaciers and thick ice. The elegant and colorful dials are framed with a bezel made from Swedish stainless damascus steel.

GoS watch straps normally are made from moose leather sourced by GoS. However, the Sarek collections dress watch qualities are sometimes better matched with a tapered strap in a more glossy leather. We now offer alternatives to further personalize the watch in both leather qualities and stitching to match or contrast the dial´s color range. The deployant buckles are Swiss made and supplier´s patented and elegant snap lock mechanism has been proven to be flawless by major premium watch brands.

The elegance of the unique dials in mother-of-pearl is matched with new GoS presentation boxes in Swedish crystal. The manufacturer Vas Vitreum is a family owned company that is now run by the 4th and 5th generation of glass craftsmen. GoS and Vas Vitreum collaborated in designing a multi-functional crystal box that serves equally well for display as elegant protection of the watch inside.

The Sarek is powered by a Soprod A10 movement that has been customized with a GoS triskele rotor. The dark GoS rotor has a circular satinization as finish and is equipped with an additional counter weight made from German silver. The counter weight is finished for maximum contrasts between the satinized surface and high gloss polished bevels.

GoS Watches – Sarek Akka (New Bespoke Edition)

Sarek Akka marked a return to traditional uncolored Damascus steel in the GoS Sarek collection when it was introduced in 2017. It was also the first model to feature a counter weight in damascus steel and is now the first to feature two new options of bespoke elements, a handsculped damascus steel crown and made-to-order straps with a new GoS deployant buckle.

GoS has made crowns in handsculpted damascus steel ever since the first GoS watches more than 10 years ago. The Sarek collection introduced a new crown shape in 2016 which was inspired by Viking sword hilts. This design has been further developed into the damascus steel crowns of the Viking watch Väring and is now also available as an option for the Sarek collection. The crown is handsculpted from stainless damascus steel that has been forged to a density which results in a pattern with lines thinner than those of a fingerprint.

GoS watch straps normally are made from moose leather that we source ourselves. However, the Sarek collections dress watch qualities are sometimes better matched with a tapered strap in a more glossy leather. We now offer alternatives to further personalize the watch in both leather qualities and stitching to match or contrast the dial´s color range. The GoS 20mm deployant buckle is Swiss made and supplier´s patented and elegant snap lock mechanism has been proven to be flawless by major premium watch brands.

The main source of inspiration for the monochrome Sarek Akka was found in the most impressive massif of Swedish Lapland – Akka. Akka is located just north of Sarek and is often referred to as “The Queen of Lapland” since Akka means “grandmother” or “goddess” in Saami language. The massif is surrounded by low growing mountain Birch, which is illustrated by scroll engravings on the watch bezel. This detailed engraving is made by master engraver Stanley Stoltz who is a legend among knife and rifle collectors.

The hands are high gloss polished in a Dauphine finish with a center ridge which bears a closer resemblance to the Viking arrow and spear heads that inspired the first GoS hands.

The Sarek is powered by a Soprod A10 movement that has been customized with a GoS triskele rotor. The dark GoS rotor has a circular satinization as finish and is equipped with an additional counter weight made from Damascus steel. The counter weight is finished for maximum contrasts on the surface and high gloss polished bevels.

GoS Watches Väring

With their first bronze watch model, Patrik Sjögren and Johan Gustafsson pay tribute to a Viking warrior named Väring, who lived 1000 years back in a village that later grew to become Linkoping, the home town of GoS watches.

The case of GoS Väring has a center ring in Stainless Damascus steel while all other parts are made of Bronze. The shape and overall design of the case is recognizable from previous GoS models but with new Viking-inspired details added. Some of the changes are subtle, like the lug shape which has been altered to better resemble the bow ornaments of Viking ships. Others are immediately identifiable as Viking elements such as the Viking loop knot patterns on the lugs, for example.

The chapter ring and hands are also made of Bronze and share the same finishing elements with rich contrasts between pre-patinized slightly darkened surfaces and polished chamfers. GoS has always aimed to create rich contrasts in our Damascus steel finishing and bring this to the Bronze finishing too. The hands for the Väring
watch features the familiar Viking spear outline but will premiere a newly developed surface finishing that makes the surface appear to be curved, just like spear heads. It is inspired by the traditional Swiss Côtes de Genève but done in a new way.

GoS watches are presented in walnut wood boxes, handcrafted by the local sculptor and artisan Kanevad. The presentation box for Väring is adorned with a Viking knot pattern also seen in the lugs of the watch.

GoS Sarek Midnight Blue

Taking inspiration from the wonderful shades of mother nature, Scandinavian luxury watch atelier GoS is introducing the most stylish and elegant Damascus steel dial ever made – Midnight Blue. The dial colors depend on lighting and the matte dial surfaces seamlessly change from satin black to anthracite while the polished surfaces varies between deep blue and piano black.

Back in 2012, Patrik Sjögren developed the Ice Blue tempering of Johan Gustafsson’s hand-forged Damascus steel for the GoS Nordic Seasons collection. The goal was to achieve a nuance that resembles thick ice and was achieved by applying a higher temperature than what’s normal in a steel tempering process. The Ice Blue tempering has then been continuously improved on and reoccurring in other models of the GoS collection.

This year, Patrik has developed a new finishing method with the goal to introduce a dark and elegant dial. The separate nuances of black and blue in the Damascus steel pattern are a result of combining a contrast finishing with tempering in multiple steps. The colors of tempered steel are created when light is reflected on the surface. Different nuances are experienced when light source or reflection angle changes.

Sarek – Midnight Blue is delivered with strap made from Swedish Moose leather and GoS offers four different choices of which the lighter Khaki or the glossy black are expected to be the most popular alternatives.

The Sarek houses a Soprod A10 movement with a customized GoS triskele rotor. The triskele design is the GoS version of the famous Viking symbol with three interlocked horns and has been present on GoS watches since GoS was founded 10 years ago. The dark rotor is finished with a circular satinization and is equipped with an additional counter weight made from German silver. The counter weight is hand-finished with polished bevels and circular satinization on the top for maximum contrasts.

The chapter ring and the case ring both draw inspiration from authentic Viking bracelets and brooches. Sarek is also the first GoS model to feature the new GoS crown, which is shaped much like the form of a Viking sword hilt. The neck of the GoS crown is deeply recessed into the case, thereby securing the crown and mechanism from side impacts. The hands are high gloss polished in a Dauphine finish with a center ridge which bears a closer resemblance to the Viking arrow and spear heads that inspired the first GoS hands.

The retail price of Sarek Midnight Blue is US$9,500 + applicable taxes. Like all GoS watches, every Sarek dial has a unique pattern but all share the same character. GoS will present dials for selection when ordering a Sarek directly from the workshop.

GoS Sarek Akka

Swedish watch brand GoS presents its latest timepiece Sarek Akka, which marks a return to traditional uncolored Damascus steel. Main source of inspiration for this monochrome watch was found in the most impressive massif of Swedish Lapland – Akka.

The monochrome watch works well with colored straps and it is delivered with a chocolate brown GoS strap in premium Moose leather. However, GoS provides four different alternatives of which the lighter beige/brown also complements the monochrome Sarek Akka well.

The retail price of Sarek Akka is US$11,800 + applicable taxes. Like all GoS watches, each Sarek Akka dial has a unique pattern but all with the same character. GoS will present dials for selection when ordering a Sarek directly from the workshop.
