GoS Norrsken Limited Edition

Swedish independent watch brand GoS presents its new model, the Norrsken. Named after the Northern Lights, this timepiece captures the appearance of swirling green lights dancing across northern skies.

The watch draws upon the expertise of various artisans and encompasses a choice of a Damascus steel dial or a hand-guilloché dial. A hand-blown index ring, formed of Swedish crystal, allows an extraordinary degree of luminescence to pass through its clear surface, flooding the dial with vivid green tones.

GoS Norrsken Limited Edition

The Norrsken is available with a choice of case rings, dials and bezels. At the heart of the watch is the Calibre GoS03, featuring premium finishing and a customised micro-rotor hand-forged in Damascus steel. GoS, based in Linköping, Sweden is proud of its Scandinavian heritage.

Over the years, the company has created watches inspired by Scandinavian history and nature. Its latest watch, the Norrsken, the Swedish term for the Northern Lights, emulates the appearance of this natural phenomenon.

GoS Norrsken Limited Edition

The Norrsken, housed in a 41.5mm stainless steel case, encompasses an array of materials. It is available with a Damascus steel dial, a material synonymous with GoS, or a hand-guilloché dial. This latter option is produced in collaboration with the renowned guilloché specialist, Jochen Benzinger. Both dial options evince the same captivating green hue. GoS can also manufacture the case in precious metals upon request.

GoS Norrsken Limited Edition

The Damascus steel dial is hand-forged and features a unique Northern Lights motif. It combines matte black and high-gloss polished emerald green tones and depicts the animated motion of the Northern Lights swirling colours. An index ring, encircling the dial, is produced by Swedish master craftsman, Mikael Kenlind of Vas Vitreum.

GoS Norrsken Limited Edition

This clear index ring is hand-sculpted and hand-blown in Swedish crystal, a rare form of glass seldom seen outside of the country. Twelve small fixation points hold the index ring in place, allowing a degree of flex and thereby mitigating the risk of damage should the watch be subject to impact.

GoS Norrsken Limited Edition

James Thompson and his company, Black Badger, again based in Sweden, provide an insert ring cast from solid Badgerite. This solid lume material, developed in collaboration with Swiss firm, RC Tritec, the makers of Super- LumiNova, is positioned behind the glass index ring.

GoS Norrsken Limited Edition

The clear glass ring refracts light into the case, creating a mesmerising green shimmer. A further application of lume is positioned below the index ring near the exposed dial area, enhancing the readability of the indexes. A special colour of lume and method of application were developed specifically for this watch.

GoS Norrsken Limited Edition

Spear-shaped hour and minute hands convey the prevailing time, while the GoS triskele indicates the running seconds. Both the index ring and seconds display are recessed within the dial which is filled with SuperLumiNova. With the Northern Lights Damascus steel dial, a series of Super-LumiNova dots are positioned below the GoS triskele seconds hand, producing an animated effect as the hand rotates.

GoS Norrsken Limited Edition

Like the dial, the case of the Norrsken is also available in two variants. One option features a highly polished stainless-steel case ring, while a second version is endowed with a Damascus steel case ring. Another option is to request Black Damascus treatment of the damascus steel case parts. The bezel and the caseback are facetted, accentuating the appearance of the fluted case ring.

GoS Norrsken Limited Edition

The bezel is available in a choice of highly polished stainless steel or Damascus steel, both finished in the GoS workshop. Furthermore, all pin buckles are forged of Damascus steel, produced by GoS, and feature the brand’s triskele logo.

GoS Norrsken Limited Edition

The caseback is fitted with a pane of sapphire crystal allowing the wearer to view the automatic movement within. The Calibre GoS03 is made by movement specialist Schwarz Etienne and customised by GoS. It encompasses premium finishing, including hand-polished bevels and specific modifications requested by GoS, including a dedicated escape wheel bridge.

GoS Norrsken Limited Edition

GoS has equipped the movement with its own micro-rotor, hand-forged in Damascus steel. Its upper surface is suffused with shades of green and black, matching the appearance of the dial. The micro-rotor sits flush with the neighbouring bridges, mitigating the height of the movement and providing unrestricted views of numerous beautifully finished components. The ratchet wheel is adorned with the GoS triskele emblem. When the mainspring is fully wound, the watch will run autonomously for 86 hours.

GoS Norrsken Limited Edition

The Norrsken is supplied on a sumptuous strap, handmade in Stockholm from high-gloss, polished salmon leather. Finally, the watch is presented in a hand-blown Swedish crystal presentation box, once again, handcrafted by Mikael Kenlind of Vas Vitreum.

GoS Skadi – Limited Edition Watch Paying Tribute to the Norse Goddess of Winter

This new limited edition watch model from Swedish watchmaker GoS combines black damascus steel with red gold and glacier blue luminous Mother of Pearl to illustrate the landscape ruled by Skadi – the Winter Goddess in Norse Mythology. Skadi is pronounced Skah-dee and she personifies strength, courage, and endurance. Her most mentioned attributes are her bow and skis as she is very skilled at using them both to hunt and to engage in battle.

GoS hands and movement components in Johan Gustafsson´s damascus steel have been featured in previous GoS models but they are re-introduced with further refinement in Skadi. The engraving on both case lugs and movement is done by master knifemaker Anders Hedlund, who also does the outstanding engraving work on Sarek Trollius. GoS introduce another master craftsman to the GoS collective as master goldsmith Peter deWit cast the gold parts for the case and also fit the premium quality blue sapphires in all indexes and the Damascus steel crown.

GoS developed the black damascus steel during 2018 and it was first introduced in the collaboration with Singer Reimagined and the unique piece Track1 Black Damascus for OnlyWatch 2019. A damascus steel pattern can become less visible when coated and the contrasts within the pattern is lost. However, the qualities of the industry strength PVD coating that GoS use beautifully show the contrasts of the pattern. The black polished elements of the patterned steel are indeed deep black but also sparkle with light reflections.

The dial is made from white Mother of Pearl, which is both colored and backlit through clever use of modern Swiss Super-Luminova. This technique was developed by Patrik Sjögren during 2018 and was first introduced in Sarek Glacier during Baselworld 2019. The icy blue glow has a close resemblance to the light reflections in a snowy landscape during a moonlit night.

The collaboration with Master knifemaker Anders Hedlund continues as he engraves both the sides of the lugs with a viking knot pattern and the Damascus steel bridges of the movement.

The movement bridges are manufactured from one solid piece of Johan Gustafsson´s artistic damascus steel. The finishing is done by Patrik Sjögren who has further refined the finishing from damscus steel movements GoS introduced in 2012. The goal is to achieve a maximum contrast of the damascus steel pattern and to combine that with high gloss polished bevels. Anders suggested to draw inspiration from Viking shield decoration and to fill the engraving with gold for maximum contrast to the damascus steel.

During 2018, Anders Hedlund received “Best in Show” award at the Solvang Invitational custom Knife show and also received the “Wooden Sword award” presented by the book “Knives 2018”. That award is widely regarded as being acknowledged as the world’s best knifemaker.

GoS watch straps are normally made from moose leather sourced by GoS and the strap for Skadi is no exception. However, the brand offers alternatives to further personalize the watch with straps in different leather qualities and stitching. The Swiss made deployant buckle is in solid 18k gold and the supplier´s patented and elegant snap lock mechanism has been proven to be flawless by major premium watch brands.

GoS Sarek Trollius

GoS presents Sarek Trollius watch in partnership with Swedish artisan Anders Hedlund, who is regarded to be one of the world´s best knife makers and engravers.

Anders suggested the use of polished 24k gold pins, which is something premium knife makers use to embellish their work. The working-name of the new watch became Sarek Trollius as Trollius Europaeus is a flower with yellow buds that is common in the Sarek National Park of northern Sweden. The scrollwork for the watch is similar to the petals of the Trollius flower and the gold pins emulate the yellow buds. Patrik Sjögren learned the technique to be able to introduce gold pins onto the dial as well.

GoS introduced the Sarek collection in 2016 with dial patterns that emulated the elaborate and ever-changing waterways in the Sarek National Park. A number of variations and bespoke elements have since then been introduced as well as dials that resemble the famous northern lights of Lapland. For Sarek Trollius, both the dial and the rotor counter weight are made from Johan Gustafsson´s dense and organic damascus steel. The dial is in Johan’s wildflower pattern and the rotor is a cutout from a traditional ladder woodgrain damascus. Sarek Trollius is the first GoS watch to feature engraved movement parts.

GoS watch straps are normally made from moose leather sourced by GoS. However, the Sarek collections dress watch qualities are sometimes better matched with a tapered strap in a more glossy leather. The brand now offers alternatives to further personalize the watch in both leather qualities and stitching to match or contrast the dial´s color range. The deployant buckles are Swiss made and supplier´s patented and elegant snap lock mechanism has been proven to be flawless by major premium watch brands.

The Sarek chapter ring and the case ring both draw inspiration from authentic Viking bracelets and brooches. Sarek is also the first GoS model to feature the new GoS crown, which is shaped much like the form of a Viking sword hilt. The neck of the GoS crown is deeply recessed into the case, thereby securing the crown and mechanism from side impacts. The hands are high gloss polished in a Dauphine finish with a center ridge which bears a closer resemblance to the Viking arrow and spearheads that inspired the first GoS hands. GoS can also manufacture hands from Johan´s hand forged steel as a bespoke element.

The Sarek is powered by a Soprod A10 movement that has been customized with a GoS triskele rotor. The dark GoS rotor has a circular satinization as finish and is equipped with an additional counter weight handmade from either German silver or damascus steel.

GoS Watches – Sarek Glacier and Sunset

GoS introduced the Sarek collection in 2016 with dial patterns that emulated the elaborate and ever-changing waterways in the Sarek National Park. A number of variations and bespoke elements have since then been introduced as well as dials that resemble the famous northern lights of Lapland. Northern lights are by far the most famous light phenomenon of the north, but the colorful Autumn Sunsets can be just as spectacular.

GoS tempered damascus steel dials have deep and dynamic colors, but one limitation is that they do not emit any light. Mother-of-pearl is translucent and let both color and light through the material. GoS is the first watch brand to use this property to present mother-of-pearl dials that glows in colors. Patrik Sjögren has developed the combination during two years to perfect two favorite themes, sunset orange and ice blue, as seen in glaciers and thick ice. The elegant and colorful dials are framed with a bezel made from Swedish stainless damascus steel.

GoS watch straps normally are made from moose leather sourced by GoS. However, the Sarek collections dress watch qualities are sometimes better matched with a tapered strap in a more glossy leather. We now offer alternatives to further personalize the watch in both leather qualities and stitching to match or contrast the dial´s color range. The deployant buckles are Swiss made and supplier´s patented and elegant snap lock mechanism has been proven to be flawless by major premium watch brands.

The elegance of the unique dials in mother-of-pearl is matched with new GoS presentation boxes in Swedish crystal. The manufacturer Vas Vitreum is a family owned company that is now run by the 4th and 5th generation of glass craftsmen. GoS and Vas Vitreum collaborated in designing a multi-functional crystal box that serves equally well for display as elegant protection of the watch inside.

The Sarek is powered by a Soprod A10 movement that has been customized with a GoS triskele rotor. The dark GoS rotor has a circular satinization as finish and is equipped with an additional counter weight made from German silver. The counter weight is finished for maximum contrasts between the satinized surface and high gloss polished bevels.

GoS Watches – Sarek Akka (New Bespoke Edition)

Sarek Akka marked a return to traditional uncolored Damascus steel in the GoS Sarek collection when it was introduced in 2017. It was also the first model to feature a counter weight in damascus steel and is now the first to feature two new options of bespoke elements, a handsculped damascus steel crown and made-to-order straps with a new GoS deployant buckle.

GoS has made crowns in handsculpted damascus steel ever since the first GoS watches more than 10 years ago. The Sarek collection introduced a new crown shape in 2016 which was inspired by Viking sword hilts. This design has been further developed into the damascus steel crowns of the Viking watch Väring and is now also available as an option for the Sarek collection. The crown is handsculpted from stainless damascus steel that has been forged to a density which results in a pattern with lines thinner than those of a fingerprint.

GoS watch straps normally are made from moose leather that we source ourselves. However, the Sarek collections dress watch qualities are sometimes better matched with a tapered strap in a more glossy leather. We now offer alternatives to further personalize the watch in both leather qualities and stitching to match or contrast the dial´s color range. The GoS 20mm deployant buckle is Swiss made and supplier´s patented and elegant snap lock mechanism has been proven to be flawless by major premium watch brands.

The main source of inspiration for the monochrome Sarek Akka was found in the most impressive massif of Swedish Lapland – Akka. Akka is located just north of Sarek and is often referred to as “The Queen of Lapland” since Akka means “grandmother” or “goddess” in Saami language. The massif is surrounded by low growing mountain Birch, which is illustrated by scroll engravings on the watch bezel. This detailed engraving is made by master engraver Stanley Stoltz who is a legend among knife and rifle collectors.

The hands are high gloss polished in a Dauphine finish with a center ridge which bears a closer resemblance to the Viking arrow and spear heads that inspired the first GoS hands.

The Sarek is powered by a Soprod A10 movement that has been customized with a GoS triskele rotor. The dark GoS rotor has a circular satinization as finish and is equipped with an additional counter weight made from Damascus steel. The counter weight is finished for maximum contrasts on the surface and high gloss polished bevels.

GoS Watches Väring

With their first bronze watch model, Patrik Sjögren and Johan Gustafsson pay tribute to a Viking warrior named Väring, who lived 1000 years back in a village that later grew to become Linkoping, the home town of GoS watches.

The case of GoS Väring has a center ring in Stainless Damascus steel while all other parts are made of Bronze. The shape and overall design of the case is recognizable from previous GoS models but with new Viking-inspired details added. Some of the changes are subtle, like the lug shape which has been altered to better resemble the bow ornaments of Viking ships. Others are immediately identifiable as Viking elements such as the Viking loop knot patterns on the lugs, for example.

The chapter ring and hands are also made of Bronze and share the same finishing elements with rich contrasts between pre-patinized slightly darkened surfaces and polished chamfers. GoS has always aimed to create rich contrasts in our Damascus steel finishing and bring this to the Bronze finishing too. The hands for the Väring
watch features the familiar Viking spear outline but will premiere a newly developed surface finishing that makes the surface appear to be curved, just like spear heads. It is inspired by the traditional Swiss Côtes de Genève but done in a new way.

GoS watches are presented in walnut wood boxes, handcrafted by the local sculptor and artisan Kanevad. The presentation box for Väring is adorned with a Viking knot pattern also seen in the lugs of the watch.

GoS Sarek Midnight Blue

Taking inspiration from the wonderful shades of mother nature, Scandinavian luxury watch atelier GoS is introducing the most stylish and elegant Damascus steel dial ever made – Midnight Blue. The dial colors depend on lighting and the matte dial surfaces seamlessly change from satin black to anthracite while the polished surfaces varies between deep blue and piano black.

Back in 2012, Patrik Sjögren developed the Ice Blue tempering of Johan Gustafsson’s hand-forged Damascus steel for the GoS Nordic Seasons collection. The goal was to achieve a nuance that resembles thick ice and was achieved by applying a higher temperature than what’s normal in a steel tempering process. The Ice Blue tempering has then been continuously improved on and reoccurring in other models of the GoS collection.

This year, Patrik has developed a new finishing method with the goal to introduce a dark and elegant dial. The separate nuances of black and blue in the Damascus steel pattern are a result of combining a contrast finishing with tempering in multiple steps. The colors of tempered steel are created when light is reflected on the surface. Different nuances are experienced when light source or reflection angle changes.

Sarek – Midnight Blue is delivered with strap made from Swedish Moose leather and GoS offers four different choices of which the lighter Khaki or the glossy black are expected to be the most popular alternatives.

The Sarek houses a Soprod A10 movement with a customized GoS triskele rotor. The triskele design is the GoS version of the famous Viking symbol with three interlocked horns and has been present on GoS watches since GoS was founded 10 years ago. The dark rotor is finished with a circular satinization and is equipped with an additional counter weight made from German silver. The counter weight is hand-finished with polished bevels and circular satinization on the top for maximum contrasts.

The chapter ring and the case ring both draw inspiration from authentic Viking bracelets and brooches. Sarek is also the first GoS model to feature the new GoS crown, which is shaped much like the form of a Viking sword hilt. The neck of the GoS crown is deeply recessed into the case, thereby securing the crown and mechanism from side impacts. The hands are high gloss polished in a Dauphine finish with a center ridge which bears a closer resemblance to the Viking arrow and spear heads that inspired the first GoS hands.

The retail price of Sarek Midnight Blue is US$9,500 + applicable taxes. Like all GoS watches, every Sarek dial has a unique pattern but all share the same character. GoS will present dials for selection when ordering a Sarek directly from the workshop.

GoS Sarek Akka

Swedish watch brand GoS presents its latest timepiece Sarek Akka, which marks a return to traditional uncolored Damascus steel. Main source of inspiration for this monochrome watch was found in the most impressive massif of Swedish Lapland – Akka.

The monochrome watch works well with colored straps and it is delivered with a chocolate brown GoS strap in premium Moose leather. However, GoS provides four different alternatives of which the lighter beige/brown also complements the monochrome Sarek Akka well.

The retail price of Sarek Akka is US$11,800 + applicable taxes. Like all GoS watches, each Sarek Akka dial has a unique pattern but all with the same character. GoS will present dials for selection when ordering a Sarek directly from the workshop.

GoS Sarek

The latest model from Swedish watch brand GoS is named after the most famous National Park in Sweden – Sarek. The GoS Sarek was introduced as a prototype during Baselworld 2016 and has since been produced in a limited pre-production series this past summer. The new Sarek has the largest damascus steel dial the brand has made to date, and is the first GoS watch to feature several new design elements with a subtle Viking inspiration.

The final design presented in this press release displays refinements in the case with an added curved chamfer of the lugs and a curved shape to the case ring. Both the chapter ring and the case ring draw inspiration from authentic Viking bracelets and brooches. This becomes more apparent with the refined case ring. Sarek is also the first GoS model to feature the new GoS crown, which is shaped much like the form of a Viking sword hilt.

The neck of the GoS crown is deeply recessed into the case, thereby securing the crown and mechanism from side impacts. The new GoS hands are high gloss polished in a Dauphine finish with a center ridge which bears a closer resemblance to the Viking arrow and spear heads. Sarek leather straps are made from select Moose leather that has received a special treatment to shrink the grain.

Moose leather is known to be very durable and the treatment adds a nice lustre to the highly visible grain. The Sarek is powered by a Soprod A10 movement that has been customized with a GoS triskele rotor. The dark GoS rotor has a circular satinization as finish and is equipped with an additional rhodinated counter weight, which has polished bevels and satinized surface.

The pattern and natural tempered coloring of the Sarek dial is inspired by the landscape of a valley in Sarek National Park in Swedish Lapland. The Sarek National Park is regarded to be a national treasure of Sweden and often referred to as Europe’s last true wilderness area. It hosts the largest Moose (Älg) in Europe and is also home to 100 glaciers and six of Sweden’s 13 highest peaks. The park is 2000 square kilometers of majestic and untouched wilderness and its remoteness are matched only by the breathtaking beauty of its peaks, valleys and fast-flowing mountain rivers.

The retail price of Sarek is US$7,800 + applicable taxes. Like all GoS watches, the Sarek dial has a unique pattern and coloring but all with the same character. GoS will present dials for selection when ordering a Sarek directly from the workshop and it is also possible to request color alternatives.

GoS Sarek Ladies

GoS, the Swedish watch brand specialised in the production of unique timepieces incorporating Damascus steel, announces their first ladies watch.

The Sarek Ladies is the first ever women’s watch with a Damascus steel dial. Johan Gustafsson has a unique ability to extract natural vibrant colors from his hand forged steel. The idea of making watches based on a National Park was initiated and developed by Patrik Sjogren and Johan Gustafsson during the winter of 2015/2016 and introduced with a prototype of a Sarek men’s watch during Baselworld 2016.

GoS then continued to develop the men’s watch but also started to work on a ladies model. The ladies model shares some of the Viking inspired details that were introduced with the men’s Sarek while adding new details such as the strap screws. The elliptic grooves on the case ring which GoS premiered on the men´s Sarek have been made more elegant and the whole case is high gloss polished. Another striking difference is the index markers of Sarek Ladies, which opened to show the colored steel below. The slightly sloped case interior provides more light to the indexes and provides a surface on which the colored Damascus steel is reflected.

The patterns and tempered natural coloring of the Sarek Damascus steel dials are inspired by the landscape of a valley in Sarek National Park in Swedish Lapland. Sarek National Park is regarded as a Swedish national treasure and is often referred to as Europe’s last true wilderness area. It hosts the largest Moose (Alg) in Europe and is also home to 100 glaciers and six of Sweden’s 13 highest peaks. The park is 2000 square kilometers of majestic and untouched wilderness and its remoteness is matched only by the breathtaking beauty of its peaks, valleys, and fast-running mountain rivers.

The hands of the Sarek Ladies are high gloss polished in a Dauphine finish with a center ridge to emphasize the brand’s inspiration from Viking arrow and spear heads. Sarek is powered by a Soprod A10 movement, which is equipped with a custom GoS triskele rotor, finished in satinized dark grey with an additional rhodinized counter weight.

The Sarek Ladies is available with black Sarek Moose leather strap or optional pastel colored straps in high quality leather, all fitted with a stainless steel folding clasp. Shapes from Viking sword handles were the main source of inspiration when the brand designed the new GoS crown.  The result is a unique crown that is highly ergonomic.

The retail price of Sarek is US$7,800 + applicable taxes and the first deliveries are estimated to mid November 2016. Like all GoS watches, every Sarek dial has a unique pattern and coloring but all will share with the same character. Clients can also request alternative colors when ordering directly from GoS.

GoS Nordic Seasons Gold with New Damascus Steel Caliber Based on Technotime TT718 Manual Wound Movement

The brand has announced both a new GoS movement collaboration and the updated specification of the first bicolor GoS watch, Nordic Seasons – Gold. GoS has an agreement with Technotime, of La Chaux-de-Fonds, to use their COSC calibers as a basis for future GoS movements.

Nordic Seasons – Gold will be the first GoS model to be fitted with the new GoS damascus steel movement, which is based on the manually wound TT718. This movement beats at 4Hz (28,800) and has a double barrel to provide the long power reserve of 120 hours, or five days. GoS will modify the movements by manufacturing and finishing damascus steel bridges from Johan Gustafsson’s hand forged Damascus steel.

The Nordic Seasons case is designed to provide reflections between the two different materials. The reflections of red gold onto the polished damascus steel is striking and  the Swedish red gold is a perfect companion to the natural contrasts of the hand forged damascus steel. The dial is manufactured from two different Swedish tool steels that are forged together and folded to reach a total of 192 layers before Johan Gustafsson applies his trademark techniques to create the wildflower pattern. Given the nature of damascus steel, every Nordic Season – Gold is a unique piece and is numbered in production sequence.

Patrik Sjögren receives the dial and other damascus steel parts for machining and further work in the GoS workshop where also the hands and dial details in gold are made by hand. GoS has improved upon the finishing of the damascus steel movement parts in comparison to the previous GoS models to provide more contrasts. The bridges are made from one solid piece of woodgrain patterned damascus steel and Patrik’s goal with the finishing is to optimize the contrasts within the pattern itself and also between the seemingly raw steel and the high gloss polished bevels and holes.

File worked crown
File work is used by the most skilled knife makers to enhance their work and a knife with handmade file work transcends the tool from a utility to functional art. The first two GoS watches manufactured in 2008 had file work applied to the Titanium case back. GoS decided to re-introduce this technique to the watches by applying it to the damascus steel crown. The numbers three and nine are both significant numbers in Norse mythology, which is why we designed the pattern to consist of nine indentations on each side. The file work not only adds new details and reflections but also improves the grip.

GoS Watches Nordic Seasons Gold

The partnership between master blade smith Johan Gustafsson and watchmaker Patrik Sjogren was forged to provide truly unique watches, inspired by the beauty of northern Scandinavia and the ancient Swedish tradition of metallurgy.

Now, the Swedish watch brand GoS introduces their first bicolor watch, Nordic Seasons – Gold. It combines hand-forged damascus steel with solid 18K gold details in the Swedish red gold nuance, also known as pink gold.

The Nordic Seasons case is designed to provide reflection between the two different materials. The reflections of red gold onto the polished damascus steel is striking and we believe that the Swedish red gold is a perfect companion to the natural contrasts of the hand-forged damascus steel. The dial is manufactured from two different Swedish tool steels that are forged together and folded to reach a total of 192 layers before Johan Gustafsson applies his trademark techniques to create the wildflower pattern.Given the nature of damascus steel, every Nordic Season – Gold is a unique piece and is numbered in sequence with a 12 piece limitation.

Patrik Sjögren receives the dial and other damascus steel parts for machining and further work in the  GoS workshop where he also manufactures the hands and dial details in gold. The finishing of the damascus steel movement parts has been further improved in comparison to the previous GoS models  such as the Aurora. The bridges are made from one solid piece of woodgrain patterned damascus steel and Patrik’s goal with the finishing is to optimize the contrasts within the pattern itself and also between the seemingly raw steel and the high gloss polished bevels and holes.

GoS Watches Bifrost Isblå

Scandinavian luxury watch maker GoS unveils, Bifrost Isblå – the first model from its Bifrost collection that features Johan Gustafsson’s newly developed “high contrast” stainless Damascus steel.

Bifrost is the poetic name of the sacred rainbow bridge in Norse mythology. The rainbow bridge was thought to connect the earth (Midgård) and the realm of the gods (Asgård). GoS tempered Damascus steel dials require natural light to generate their dynamic colours, much in the same way that a rainbow appears only when light shines through the moist air.

Isblå is the first model to be featured in the Bifrost collection and captures the blue nuances that can be found in thick ice. Every watch is a unique piece and is numbered in sequence and every Bifrost model is limited to 25pcs and will be followed by further colour themed models.

Johan Gustafsson invented the “high contrast” stainless Damascus steel and refined the creation process during the autumn of 2013. There are only a handful of blade smiths who have succeeded in making pattern-welded stainless steel. However, Johan has taken it to the level where he is now able to create the same kind of dense and expressive patterns in his new stainless Damascus steel as when he is working in carbon based steel.

The Bifrost collection uses the new steel in both the case and the rotor, which is shaped as the GoS triskele symbol. The design of the case and case back is such that the weight of the rotor will be hidden, showing only the movement and the triskele Damascus steel rotor. The GoS triskele is a triple blade shape with a design that is loosely based on triskele symbols that are common in ancient Nordic and Celtic symbols. One of the most famous of these symbols is the interlinked triple horn that symbolise the god Oden (and his drinking habits).

One unique feature of the GoS cases is the larger diameter of the case back and bezels, which we use to highlight the curved surface of the Damascus steel case core as the steel pattern is mirrored in the high gloss, polished finish.

The hands of the Bifrost Isblå are made in solid white gold and have the GoS sword shape that premiered in the Stockholm model. All hands and index rings are hand finished with polished bevels.

The Bifrost Isblå comes with a strap in soft, black nubuck. The matte surface of the straps blends well with the Damascus steel finish of the case. These handmade GoS straps are fitted with screwed lugs and are paired with a stainless steel GoS buckle.

Bifrost Isblå No2-No8 will be available for delivery in June 2014, at an estimated retail price of US$12,600.

GoS Watches Aurora

The partnership between master blade smith Johan Gustafsson and watchmaker Patrik Sjogren was forged to provide truly unique watches, inspired by the beauty of northern Scandinavia and the ancient Swedish tradition of metallurgy.

GoS proudly presents Aurora, a strictly limited edition watch inspired by the Northern Lights of Lapland. The Northern Lights or Aurora Borealis, named after a Roman goddess, is a natural phenomenon where colorful lights swirl around the sky in a dramatic dance, leaving different patterns and shapes. Sometimes the shapes appear as fold upon fold of luminous draperies that majestically move across the sky. Other times they are like gigantic flaming swords furiously slashing at the heavens.

Aurora’s Damascus steel dial has been tempered to a blue-green color and the flowing colored lines are framed by bright streaks. The white gold dial details and hands match the highlights on the dial.

The movement is based on a chronometer grade Unitas 6498 that has been modified with 3/4 bridges made from one solid piece of hand forged Damascus steel. The steel pattern is similar to the wood-grain pattern that is used for the GoS caliber. Both Johan and Patrik appreciate contrasts in designs and patterns, which is why Patrik chose to give the bridges a combination of traditional movement finishing on some surfaces and a rawer Damascus steel on others.

Traditional high end movement finishing is time consuming. A similar amount of work is required to achieve the raw Damascus steel surface. The bridges are mirror polished before the pattern is made visible by dipping the part in hot acid. The acid eats away from the surface of some steel types that has been forged into the patterned steel while others are not affected. This means that all surfaces where tolerances must be kept also have to be protected from the acid. The finishing continues after the etching procedure to give back some brightness to the pattern and increase the contrasts in the pattern itself. The polished bevels and holes are then finalized after the Damascus steel surface is done.

The Aurora case features the same finishing improvements on the Damascus steel case that GoS developed for the Midnight Sun model. It has the familiar curved surface of the Damascus steel case core, which pattern is mirrored in the high gloss, polished large case back and bezel. The curved lugs and a low height make the watch comfortable to wear even though it is 45mm in diameter.

The Damascus steel cases are individually finished in a process Patrik initially developed for Nordic Seasons and Winter Nights. It involves two etching procedures in hot acid and refinishing in between. It is only the visible parts of the case that are exposed to the acid to ensure that the case will have the same water protection as before the treatment.

The hands of the Aurora are made in solid white gold and have the GoS sword shape that once premiered in the Stockholm model. All hands and index rings are hand finished with polished bevels and satinized top. These handmade GoS Nubuck straps are fitted with screwed lugs and are paired with a stainless steel GoS buckle.

GoS Watches Midnight Sun Limited Edition – In Association with Jochen Benzinger

Swedish watchmaker GoS unveils their latest timepiece – Midnight Sun – a strictly limited edition inspired by the Lapland summers when the sun never sets. The bright summer nights have a different kind of gentle light, which is sometimes referred to as “the golden light”.

GoS has captured the golden light by using a solid gold dial and applying several steps of radial finishing achieving the sunray effect. The abstract shape of the sun is captured in the Damascus steel chapter ring. The chapter ring and the hands are made from Johan Gustafsson’s hand forged steel, which has been shaped, polished, etched and then beveled to create the rough patterned surface and sparkling beveled edges.

The Midnight Sun model is produced in collaboration between GoS Watches and master watchmaker Jochen Benzinger who has developed his own style in movement skeletonization. The chronometer grade 6498 movement has received a custom sunray-skeletonization to complement the Midnight Sun theme. The blued main plate and wheels also feature some of his beautiful guilloche work.

The Midnight Sun is crafted from the same (stainless) Damascus steel that was first featured in the Nordic Seasons series. The finishing work on the case has been further developed with Midnight Sun to increase contrasts in the Damascus steel pattern.

One unique feature of the GoS case is the larger diameter of the case back and bezels, which we use to highlight the curved surface of the Damascus steel case core as the steel pattern is mirrored in the high gloss, polished finish. Another unique feature is the Damascus steel bezel inset that frames the dial. The trademark oversize crown in Damascus steel has a larger diameter than previous GoS models but the height has been reduced to increase overall wearability as the case core is 45mm.

The hands of the Midnight Sun are made in Damascus steel and have the GoS sword shape that premiered in the Stockholm model. All hands and index rings are hand finished with polished bevels. Making Damascus steel parts in this reduced scale requires different qualities from the steel than when its used in knives. The Damascus steel of watch hands requires the pattern to be very sharp and rich of contrasts to be at all visible.

The Midnight Sun comes with a strap in soft, black nubuck. The matte surface of the straps blends well with the Damascus steel finish of the case. These handmade GoS straps are fitted with screwed lugs and are paired with a stainless steel GoS buckle.

GoS Watches – Winter Nights Limited Edition in Collaboration with PuristSPro

Swedish mechanical watch brand Gustafsson & Sjögren(GoS) Watches has announced their new series – Winter Nights – a 10 piece limited collection of watches that are produced in collaboration with PuristSPro. These are the first GoS watches to feature the brand new manually wound manufacture Braun/GoS movement with a 4/5 bridge in solid hand-forged Damascus steel. The partnership between master bladesmith Johan Gustafsson and watchmaker Patrik Sjögren aims to provide truly unique watches, inspired by the cold north of Scandinavia and the ancient Swedish tradition in metallurgy.

The new GoS movement featuring intricate Damascus steel pattern has been developed in collaboration with Martin Braun (of Antoine Martin/MHO). They have created a 4/5-bridge and a balance cock made from one piece of solid hand-forged Damascus steel. This movement combines Martin Braun’s attention to detail and long experience as a movement manufacturer with the craftsmanship and aesthetics of the GoS team. The caliber includes Martin Braun’s HPE innovation in the use of Silicium in the escape mechanism to not only extend the service intervals but also increase the overall effectiveness of the mechanism compared to a conventional design.

Patrik Sjögren finishes the movement parts made from Damascus steel to give a good balance between the raw Damascus steel surface and the traditionally high-gloss polished bevelled edges. Finishing Damascus steel is very labour intensive as every part is polished, bevelled and etched several times to achieve the final result. The Damascus steel in the Winter Nights GoS movement is forged into the traditional woodgrain pattern, also known as the ladder pattern. This is one of the oldest known damascus steel patterns and is still considered to be one of the most beautiful and expressive patterns.

GoS draws inspiration from Nordic nature and traditions and the Winter Nights is no exception – as it is connected to both sources of inspiration. During the cold and clear winter nights the chances of seeing the spectacular northern lights are the highest and the swirling patterns of the Winter Nights dial is reminiscent of the rapidly changing shapes of the northern lights.

Winter Nights – Uncolored dial with 18K gold hands
Winter Nights, “Vinternätter” in Swedish, is also the name of an ancient festival that was first celebrated in pre- Christian Scandinavia. The festival marked the end of summer, the start of the winter, and the beginning of a new year. It was a harvest feast and also a time for honoring the ancestral spirits, the spirits of the land, and the powers of fruitfulness, wisdom, and death. The exact dates varied with the regional weather but it usually occurred during the month of October. This heathen tradition was later transformed into what is now called the “All Hallows’ Eve” and “All Saints’ Day”.

The basic element of all watches from Gustafsson & Sjögren is the hand-forged pattern welded steel, also known as Damascus steel. Johan Gustafsson applies a true folded Damascus steel technique to layers of high grade Swedish tool steels. They use 128 layers in most GoS dials. The Winter Nights dials are hand forged into a pattern which Johan Gustafsson in 2010 and named Wildflower. Wildflower is semi-symmetrical and has a definite center point, which makes it very suitable for watch dials. Customers can select a dial in natural steel or tempered coloured to a blue/purple nuance. Furthermore, the hands can be either white gold or yellow gold.

GoS Watches Nordic Seasons

Swedish mechanical watch brand GoS presents – Nordic Seasons – a new series of watches that are designed with inspiration from the rich contrasts of the Nordic seasons. This is the first GoS series to feature a case in stainless Damascus steel.

The design of the case is based on the previous distinctive GoS cases to accentuate the the Damascus steel features. One unique feature of the GoS case is the larger diameter of the case back and bezels, which highlight the curved surface of the Damascus steel case and mirrors the pattern on the polished surfaces. A Damascus steel bezel inset frames the dial. The trademark oversize crown in Damascus steel has a larger diameter than previous GoS models but the height has been reduced to increase overall wearability as the case diameter is 45mm.

The hands of the Nordic Seasons are in the GoS spear shape, which premiered with the Stockholm model. Johan Gustafsson and Patrik Sjögren have designed an index ring with similarly shaped hour markers to complement the hands. All hands and index rings of the Nordic Seasons watches are made in solid 18 carat gold with a nuance
selected to match the colour scheme of the season dial.
Nordic Seasons will be produced in a limited edition of 20 pieces with 5 pieces for each season. The Nordic Seasons watches are the first GoS watches with a Damascus steel movement as an option. Four movements are currently planned for the series and the first movement has been fitted into the first version of the Autumn model, No 1/5. The finishing that Patrik achieves is unlike anything else in the watch industry as it combines a raw Damascus steel finish with traditionally finished bevelled edges and holes. To our knowledge, this is the first time watch movements with bridges in solid Damascus steel have been produced.

Johan Gustafsson and Patrik Sjögren have fitted the Nordic Seasons watches with a strap in soft and velvety Nubuck leather. The natural-looking surface of the straps blends well with the Damascus steel finish. These GoS straps are handmade in Switzerland by a Swedish artisan and are fitted with screwed lugs.

GoS Watch & Knife Set (Vile watch & Oden Knife)

In 2011, Swedish watch maker GoS presented a new concept with a matched set with a GoS watch and knife. The watch and knife share a new damascus steel pattern that has been invented and developed by the master bladesmith Johan Gustafsson. The knife and watch are named Oden and Vile, after two brothers in Nordic mythology.

The Vile watch case has lug screws in damascus steel that match the GoS trademark oversized damascus steel crown. Prehistoric Baltic coral has similar patterns to the new damascus steel pattern and was the material that Johan choose for the knife handle. The newly developed pattern is named as wildflower, which characteristics is especially prominent in the watch dial.

The GoS watch and knife set with Vile and Oden will be produced on order and limited to 5pcs. Some customization, e.g. applying Johan’s skills in steel coloring to the damascus steel parts will also be possible.

The Vile watch and Oden knife is the first watch and knife pair to be delivered in the new GoS Watch & Knife set presentation box. The boxes are individually crafted by Sture Nyberg, a local woodcraft artisan who is well known for his work which he regularly exhibit. The box is crafted in an ancient technique called “svepask” in Swedish and is so specific to the Baltic region that it does not have an English name. The material is thin birch wood that is moisturized and bent over a round template. Birch root is then used to lock the shape with a seam. The box receives a darker tone by adding color pigments to linseed oil. An additional wax coating is then added after the oil has dried. The wax is then polished to a deep finish after being left to harden for a week.

Gustafsson & Sjögren will continue to present new watch and knife combinations, which will then be available and produced on order. It is also possible to order customized sets in the same manner as GoS provide custom watches.

GoS Stockholm Limited Edition

GoS, the Swedish independent watch brand founded by Patrik Sjögren and Johan Gustafsson presents their new limited edition model Stockholm, which has been designed in corporation with the owners of the exclusive watch store Fredmans Ur, the GoS retailer in Stockholm. The brand name GoS stands for Gustafsson & Sjögren watches.

The new model Stockholm will be produced in a limited quantity of five watches of which four pieces with a mother of pearl dial and a single piece with a dial in blue Lapis Lazuli. The dials in natural materials highlight the rich details within the hand-forged Damascus steel. Johan Gustafsson has achieved a very fine grained steel, which pattern is made visible through careful and time consuming hand finishing techniques.

The movement ticks inside the Stockholm model is the hand wound Alpina 592R from the 1950s, a NOS movement that has been thoroughly serviced and adjusted before the assembly in the GoS workshop. The Alpina movement beautifully displays the characteristics and overall quality of watch movements from that era and has been kept in the original finishing. The deep beveling and the bridge shapes perfectly match the designs and shapes of the Damascus steel parts.

The Stockholm watch is the first model to be delivered in the new GoS presentation box. The boxes are individually crafted by Sture Nyberg, a local woodcraft artisan who is well known for his work which he regularly exhibit. The box is crafted in an ancient technique called “svep” in Swedish and is so specific to the Baltic region that it does not have an English name. The material is thin birch wood that is moisturized and bent over a round template. Birch root is then used to lock the shape with a seam.

GoS Watches – Lapland Ice & Lapland Sky

GoS presents the Lapland watches, Lapland – Ice and Lapland – Sky, two new designs based on a Damascus steel ladder pattern and Damascus steel index markers. The production is limited to five (5) watches of which two are of the uncolored Ice edition and three in the colored Sky edition. The Lapland dials are etched to enrich the contrasts but while the Lapland Ice dials are uncolored, the dials of the Lapland Sky watches have been given a lustrous blue-purple color to resemble the autumn skies of Lapland.

Lapland – Ice

All Lapland watches are delivered with reindeer leather straps. The straps are made by the highly regarded Sami artisan Christine Utsi who lives in Porjus Lapland, i.e. the northernmost parts of Sweden. She is true to the traditional methods and at the same time embrace new ideas such as applying the ancient techniques into the making of watch straps.

Lapland – Sky

The watches are equipped with a beautifully finished Unitas/ETA 6498 pocket watch movement with Geneva stripe decoration on the bridges. The finishing has been done by the Swiss company Soprod, which also improved the movement to chronometer grade standard with a screw balance and a swan neck regulator.
