GIULIANO MAZZUOLI WATCHES

GIULIANO MAZZUOLI is a ‘Swiss Made’ luxury watch brand based in Firenze, Italy. It was founded by Giuliano Mazzuoli, the world renowned designer and Florentine entrepreneur.

The creativity of Giuliano Mazzuoli is rooted in the bond he feels with his origins and with the traditional family values that when combined with his passion for design, become the source of inspiration for exclusive creations that have a stylish and qualitative value recognized by people all over the world.

His fascination with the sketches of watch movements left by his ancestor that have withstood the test of time by remaining inscribed in the walls of an attic, his curiosity for the workshop tools of his grandfather that he jealously kept in a box like they were something precious, and the versatility of the paper from his father’s print shop that in Giuliano Mazzuoli’s mind took on a different meaning as the years went on contributed to the innovative product that he has created.

As a child he observed with astonishment genuine and simple moments from every day life that later he elaborated in his mind until they became creative inspirations. When he combines this inspiration with his experience and research, he transforms common objects from yesterday into contemporary jewels of art. Giuliano tends to often say that the writing instruments, agenda books, notebooks and watches created by Giuliano Mazzuoli are something encountered and not developed through study and research.

His “encounter” with a box of workshop tools brought back memories from the old family workshop that served as the inspiration for the first collection of writing instruments called Officina (Officina in Italian means workshop).

The Moka pen takes its inspiration from the silhouette of the historic Italian coffee-machine that has become a symbol of Italian design and an object found in almost every home. The agenda books express the logical creativity of their creator by proposing graphical and solutions and unique functions. MoMA in New York customizes the cover and orders thousands of them every year.

His passion for design extended itself to the world of watch making in an effort to recapture the legacy passed down to him from an ancestor who was a master watchmaker who constructed tower clocks in the Chianti area of Tuscany. Yet again the creation of his first timepiece came from the observation of an every day object that measures pressure.

The Manometro (which means pressure gauge in Italian) watch was born from this inspiration and in a short time becomes a sought after watch by many collectors. The Contagiri watch is a combination of technology and style. It interprets the spirit of sports and the sophistication of competitive automobiles and honors the passion the designer has for auto racing.

Every collection created by Giuliano Mazzuoli is a testament of his creative genius. His interpretation of an object captures the innovative spirit of the traditions that are part of the land where he is from. Simplicity, harmony, essential and qualitative excellence become the common element of all his creations and express a real creative philosophy that does not compromise the expectations of the market. The entire production is handmade in Tuscany.

History of Giuliano Mazzuoli watches

In the early seventies Giuliano Mazzuoli began to manage the company founded by his father in 1953. The company’s core business was the production of notebooks and address books for Florentine leather workers. Under his direction, the company became a leader in the production of catalogs specializing itself in the interior design field.

In 1993, Giuliano Mazzuoli began to develop a new idea. The idea was simple but innovative. It was an agenda book different than any other agenda book available on the market. It had a weekly format with a “turn-page” system that allowed for the keeping of notes and ideas. With the success of this idea, the company started expanding its collection of products and took on the name 3.6.5.

An early innovation was a notebook with a stiff cardboard cover that with some technical adjustments became flexible (Stif-flexible) so it was easy to flip the pages. Subsequently, spiral notebooks that appeared common but had irregular lines or lines in wave patterns that successfully challenged established conventional parameters of printing were introduced.

Thanks to the increase in demand for his products, the first orders from prestigious clients like the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) of New York start coming in and special edition agenda books were created.

During the period that Mazzuoli was involved in developing an idea of a limited edition agenda book for the new millennium, a friend suggested him to create a pen. After finding the right inspiration he created his first writing instrument.

In 2000, Mazzuoli found some tools in a mechanical workshop that remind him of the instruments that he used to play with as a child in his grandfather’s laboratory (Cicli Bacci) where bicycles were built. The Officina, Writing Utensils were created in a series of pens that are inspired by mechanical tools.

After creating his first pen collection, the desire to transform everyday objects into objects of design grew in Mazzuoli. He created the Moka pen inspired by the famous coffee-machine and then Manipolo that has an ergonometric grip.

For years he dreamed of designing a timepiece different than any other timepiece already on the market.

In 2005, he founded the Giuliano Mazzuoli srl company for the development of fine timepieces that distinguish themselves for their design, technology and the materials used.

Manometro was the most ambitious project ever undertaken by the Florentine entrepreneur and the collection is named after the instrument that measures pressure. In the spring of 2008, he introduced Contagiri. The watch has a unique and sophisticated Swiss movement and complication and it celebrates the world of auto racing.

Giuliano Mazzuoli’s watches are sold in the finest watch shops in the world. Pisa Orologeria in Milan, Hausmann in Rome, Cellini in New York, Chronopassion in Paris, and The Watch Gallery in London are some of the places where the watches can be found.

Giuliano Mazzuoli Trasmissione Meccanica

The Trasmissione Meccanica is the latest mechanical timepiece from the house of Italian watch making brand Giuliano Mazzuoli. This extra ordinary timepiece has been inspired by the mechanical parts of a gear. The gear became the case of the watch. I transformed the disc of the clutch into an original dial while the crown of the watch is identical to the spline shaft (Tuscan mechanics call it “sedano” (the celery stick)) that transmits the rotations of the engine to the gear shift. The hands of the watch are like the ones on the compass found on the mechanic’s bench.

Italian luxury watch brand Giuliano Mazzuoli presents their new watch collection: Manometrino. The “Manometrino” concept is dedicated to all the people, especially women who admired the Manometro timepiece despite its large dimensions. “Manometrino” was conceived in a smaller size (27 mm diameter) respecting the design and the form of the original timepiece.

Inspired from the trend of the1960s and 1970s, “Manometrino” does not have the aim of re launching a trend in small watches, but to transmit a feeling of renewal from its small dimensions. Besides the classic leather strap, a series of suede leather straps in various colors are available.

The carbon fiber case and the rubber strap give the watch a bold look while the titanium underlines its elegance. The materials used create a unique look to the case that houses the Swiss movement. The carbon fiber case is made without a metal skeleton utilizing Formula 1 technology.

In the second version, the 18 carat rose gold on the brushed or polished bezel, the caseback, and the grooved crown add a rich glamour to the boldness of the carbon fiber case. Giuliano Mazzuoli Contagiri 8C Limited Edition

In 2007, Italian car manufacturer Alfa Romeo commercially launched its 8C Competizione sports car.

Giuliano Mazzuoli has dedicated a version of its innovative Contagiri watch to the 8C Competizione in a limited edition series of 500 + 1 pieces reserved for the privileged owners of the sports car. The dial of the watch is inspired by the rev counter in the automobile.

Giuliano Mazzuoli Contagiri 8C Limited Edition

Like all watches from this collection, this limited edition model features a highly legible dial inspired by the rev counter (RPM gauge) in the automobile. The black dial of the Contagiri 8C watch has a retrograde scale and the hand that indicates time placed on the centre.

This hand follows the arc-shaped scale featuring hour-markers and minute scales. At 12 o’clock the hand goes back employing 1/10 of a second repositioning itself always at the 0 (in reality it’s 12 o’clock) with the historic green four-leaf clover symbol representing Alfa Romeo Quadrifoglio. The numbering on the dial offers maximum legibility.

The indicators between one hour and another indicate the minutes as follows: the first short line indicates 15 minutes, the long line at the center indicates the 30 minutes, and the other short line indicates the 45 minutes. The small hand that completes an arc of 360° does not indicate the seconds but confirms that the watch is running.

The Contagiri 8C Competizione is a limited edition of 500+1 pieces in white gold and carbon fiber. The case back and the watch box will have the same personalization as the automobile with the same limited edition serial number.

The Contagiri watch does not feature any crown for winding the movement and setting the time. Instead, it has a function lever and through the lunette of the watch you can carry out the functions usually done through the crown.

Winding the watch

  • By pushing the lower part of the lever (the gear shift) towards the watch, the upper part of the lever will come out allowing you to push it out a few millimeters.
  • The four-leaf clover will disappear and in its place the number 1 will appear. In this position the watch is in winding position. With the lever in this position the watch can be wound by turning the lunette clockwise or counter clockwise like you would through a normal crown.
  • Pushing the lever back towards the watch, the four-leaf clover reappears and the small hand in motion indicates that the watch is running normally and the “automatic” watch if worn will continue running.

Setting the time

  • By pushing the lever out a few more degrees from the winding position (the watch indicates the number 1) the number 2 will appear.
  • By turning the lunette clockwise or counter clockwise the time can be set.
  • By pushing the lever towards the watch until the four-leaf clover reappears, the small hand on the watch will start to move and the watch will start running again.

Giuliano Mazzuoli Contagiri Alfa Romeo Limited Edition

Launched in a limited edition of 1050 pieces, the Giuliano Mazzuoli Alfa Romeo Contagiri watch features a stainless steel case with black DLC coating.

Inspired by the RPM Gauge, the black dial of this special edition Contagiri features a 270 degree retrograde scale with Arabic numerals and two central hands.

Giuliano Mazzuoli Contagiri Alfa Romeo Limited Edition

A one-hand retrograde that moves in an arc of 270°. At 12 o’clock the hand goes back employing 1/10 of a second repositioning itself always at the 0 (in reality it’s 12 o’clock) with the historic green four-leaf clover symbol on the dial. The numbering on the dial offers immediate legibility.

This creation can be identified by the Alfa Romeo inscription below the Giuliano Mazzuoli brand name. In addition, this limited edition timepiece highlights the four-leaf clover symbol of Alfa Romeo Quadrifoglio cars.

Driven by an automatic movement, the “Contagiri” watch does not use a crown to wind the watch or to set the time. The watch has a lever similar to a “gear shift” and through the lunette of the watch you can carry out the functions usually done through the crown. In the triangular aperture the four-leaf clover marks the position of the gear with number 1 indicating the position to wind the watch, and number 2 indicating the position to set the time.

Giuliano Mazzuoli Contagiri Alfa Romeo comes with a 44mm diameter black DLC case topped with a curved sapphire crystal glass. Its case back, lunette and function lever are in polished stainless steel. The watch can be personalized on the case back and the certificate with the serial number of the Alfa Romeo automobile.

The exclusive self-winding movement provides a power reserve of 42 hours.

Giuliano Mazzuoli Contagiri Limited Editions

Giuliano Mazzuoli presents the Contagiri watch in two limited editions: a Black DLC Stainless steel version in 999 pieces and a Carbon Fiber with 18K White Gold version in 365 pieces.

Driven by an exclusive mechanical automatic movement, Contagiri hosts a number of innovations. Firstly, the watch does not have a crown for setting the time or winding the movement. For this purpose, it uses some interesting methods as explained below.

How to wind the movement/set the time of the Giuliano Mazzuoli Contagiri watch?

Winding

The Contagiri watch does not use a crown to wind the watch or to set the time. Instead, it has a lever similar to a “gear shift” and through the lunette of the watch you can carry out the functions usually done through the crown. In the circular aperture the Giuliano Mazzuoli logo marks the position of the gear with number 1 indicating the position to wind the watch, and number 2 indicating the position to set the time.

Giuliano Mazzuoli Contagiri Limited Edition

By pushing the lower part of the lever (the gear shift) towards the watch, the upper part of the lever will come out allowing you to push it out a few millimeters.

The Giuliano Mazzuoli logo will disappear and in its place the number 1 will appear. In this position the watch is in winding position and the watch can be wound by turning the lunette clockwise or counter clockwise like you would through a normal crown. Pushing the lever back towards the watch, the Giuliano Mazzuoli logo reappears and the small hand in motion indicates that the watch is running normally and the “automatic” watch if worn will continue running.

Setting the time

From the winding position (the watch indicates the number 1), by pushing the lever out a few more degrees the number 2 will appear. By turning the lunette clockwise or counter clockwise the time can be set. By pushing the lever towards the watch until the Giuliano Mazzuoli logo reappears, the small hand on the watch will start to move and the watch will start running again.

Dial display

The dial layout of Contagiri is also unique in nature. The dial hosts a 270 degree retrograde scale instead of traditional layout for representing 1 to 12 hour markers and minute scale. The large center-hand indicating the time follows this scale.

Giuliano Mazzuoli Contagiri Limited Edition

The indicators between one hour and another indicate the minutes as follows: the first short line indicates 15 minutes, the long line at the center indicates the 30 minutes, and the other short line indicates the 45 minutes. The red-tipped small hand that completes an arc of 360° does not indicate the seconds but confirms that the watch is running.

Giuliano Mazzuoli Manometro Chronograph

Equipped with a Swiss movement and complication, the chronograph version of Manometro is faithful to the form and design of the original Manometro: a large dimension polished stainless steel case, the crown positioned at 2 o’clock and the chronographic buttons on the left side of the case. The silver-colored brushed sub-dials are positioned at 2 o’clock and at 8 o’clock.

Giuliano Mazzuoli Manometro Chronograph

Maintaining the same case dimensions of the Manometro watch, the chronograph model houses Swiss made Dubois-Dépraz 2030 Luxe automatic movement. The classic Manometro crown positioned at 2 o’clock is inscribed with the Giuliano Mazzuoli logo. The chronographic buttons positioned on the left-side of the case are slightly protruding and reflect the design of the crown

The Giuliano Mazzuoli Manometro Chronograph is available in two dial versions: ivory and black. The unique positioning of the two sub-dials contributes to the congenial positioning of the text on the dial while the classic positioning of the numbering is maintained; the chronograph hands are red. Its crown, sub-dials and start-stop buttons are positioned in a diagonal line.

Giuliano Mazzuoli Manometro

The Manometro watch was introduced in 2005 as the debut collection of Giuliano Mazzuoli.

Like in every object by Giuliano Mazzuoli, Manometro is inspired by an everyday object (manometro in Italian means pressure gauge) that the designer gives a new interpretation to while safeguarding the sober and harmonious aesthetics highlighted by qualitative excellence.

Sought-after and unique, the Manometro collection features different versions ranging from the more “classical” stainless steel case with leather or rubber strap to the precious 18 carat gold version to the sportier models in 40 layers of carbon fiber.

In every watch, the high-quality materials compliment the technical aspect of the case that houses an automatic Swiss movement. The position of the crown at 2 o’clock gives the time piece an additional touch of design.

Elegantly harmonic lines and quality excellence are always present in Giuliano Mazzuoli’s watch creations. The watches are completely handcrafted by Italian craftsmanship and they are presented in a handmade leather watch box.
