Czapek & Cie Faubourg de Cracovie Aventurine

Czapek & Cie introduces a new Faubourg de Cracovie chronograph model, for the first time featuring a stunning aventurine dial. Unveiled at the Watch Time New York show, this timepiece is limited to 50 pieces.

Czapek & Cie Faubourg de Cracovie Aventurine

The Faubourg de Cracovie Aventurine, like all other models in the Faubourg de Cracovie line, has a 41.5- millimeter steel case with crown protectors serving as pushers.

Czapek & Cie Faubourg de Cracovie Aventurine
The new Faubourg de Cracovie features three aventurine dials, as each of the chronograph counters is rapporté, i.e. fixed inside the hours and minutes dial. The choice of applied markers on the dark blue dial is aesthetic, aimed at giving the timepiece a sportier look.

Czapek & Cie Faubourg de Cracovie Aventurine

The case hosts the SXH3 calibre, a best-in class COSC-certified automatic integrated chronograph movement delivering 65 hours’ power reserve from a single barrel that drives the balance wheel at 36,000 vph / 5 Hertz.

Czapek & Cie Quai des Bergues Guilloché “Ricochet” Sapphire Blue L and Emerald Green L

Czapek & Cie has announced the release of two new models from its Quai des Bergues guilloché “Ricochet” line: Sapphire Blue L and Emerald Green L. In addition to the striking new enamel dials, they come with a redesigned mechanical movement.

Czapek & Cie Quai des Bergues Guilloché “Ricochet” Sapphire Blue L and Emerald Green L

The Quai des Bergues’ original SXH1 calibre had been designed in the spirit of the traditional Genevan craftsmen known as the cabinotiers. It was very technical and sober. Transforming an existing movement can be more difficult than developing a new one.

The most visible change on the SXH1 is the extensive openwork, which clearly delineates a full-fledged three-quarter plate and exposes the geartrain. The bridge plate and balance bridge have also been hollowed out and seem to face each other like two shooting stars about to cross paths.

This gives the movement a more dynamic look. The mainplate now has a small triangular hole cut in the middle, a cursory distraction on the rhodium-plated, matt grey surface, like a beauty mark on a pale face.

Czapek & Cie Quai des Bergues Guilloché “Ricochet” Sapphire Blue L and Emerald Green L movement

The reworked calibre differs from its predecessor in other ways, too. The original balance had a classic rack and index for regulation, for example. The new SXH1, on the other hand, has an annular balance wheel with weights for variable inertia and a Breguet terminal curve balance spring. The balance cock has also been finely skeletonised and streamlined to give the whole balance greater transparency.

Moreover, all the edges of the movement have been softened by deeper chamfering. The regular jewels were replaced with “mi-glace” rubies. These have a rounded relief that improves lubrication on the point of contact with the axes. They also give the movement a more fluid look and can, occasionally, catch incoming rays of light.

Czapek & Cie Antarctique Rattrapante Ice Blue Limited Edition

Swiss luxury watch brand Czapek & Cie has released a new edition of its Antarctique Rattrapante. The sportive, open-worked split-second chronograph now appears with a touch of blue that enhances the hands and rings on its dial.

Czapek & Cie Antarctique Rattrapante Ice Blue Limited Edition

The Antarctique Rattrapante Ice Blue watch features a brilliant open-worked architecture offering magnificent view of a very complex grande complication. By doing away with the traditional dial and removing material from the plates and bridges, the mechanism is revealed. This technique requires great care with the decorating, the beveling, the polishing, and the various types of finish.

Furthermore, as material is removed from structural parts, invisible tensions in the metal can lead to deformation of the now filigree bridges. These have to provide stable support for a running engine. It’s more challenging if that engine is driving a split-second mechanism activated by clutches, which requires stable anchoring.

Czapek & Cie Antarctique Rattrapante Ice Blue Limited Edition

The sapphire crystals in the front and on the exhibition case back reveal the intricate choreography of the dial-side mechanism.

Immediately recognizable are the two “Czapek” subdials. At 4 o’clock is a 30-minute totalizer, at 7 o’clock tick the small seconds.

In the center of the watch is the tripod bridge that holds down the patented satellite minute train and the split seconds-mechanism. Also clearly visible are the two column wheels needed for the chronograph and the split-seconds mechanisms respectively.

This latest iteration of the Antarctique is named “Ice Blue.” This model features traditionally blued hands that harmonise well with the weave of metallic greys inside the open-worked watch. A closer look reveals a fumé blue shimmer emanating from the minute track and the two totalizer tracks.

Czapek & Cie Antarctique Rattrapante Ice Blue Limited Edition

The effect is produced by the use of sapphire crystal rings that have been treated with metal oxides applied by an evaporation process. Adding to the visual dynamism of the dial is the red chrono hand, and the small red “60” at 12 o’clock.

Another salient visual aspect, though, is the dance of levers and cams on the dial of this split-second chronograph and the clamp, which instantly immobilizes one of the chrono wheels when the split-second pusher is activated. The other chronograph hand must then continue its time-counting undisturbed.

Czapek & Cie Antarctique Rattrapante Ice Blue Limited Edition

When the clamp is released, the immobilized hand will “catch up” (rattraper in French) to its companion. Each part must be manufactured to the highest specifications to ensure absolute precision.

Czapek & Cie Antarctique Rattrapante Ice Blue Limited Edition

Driving the Rattrapante Ice Blue is the Czapek’s high-performance proprietary caliber SHX6. It was created in collaboration with Chronode and is both a mechanical and aesthetic work of art. The split-second runs on energy tapped from the second wheel. It has a horizontal clutch rather than a vertical one to highlight the aesthetics of the transmission.

Czapek & Cie Antarctique Rattrapante Ice Blue Limited Edition

Furthermore, to ensure the streamlined look of the watch, the number of parts and their thickness was reduced to a minimum. Everything had to fit in the 42.5-millimeter case.

The Antarctique Rattrapante Ice Blue comes on Czapek’s own stainless steel case bracelet, whose links are shaped like the letter C.

It is a limited edition of 99 pieces.

Czapek & Cie Antarctique S

At Watches & Wonders 2022 event in Geneva, Czapek launched the Antarctique S – a reinterpretation of its sporty-chic Antarctique watch in a new 38.5mm case.

Czapek & Cie Antarctique Passage de Drake Glacier Blue S

To create this moderately sized Czapek watch, the case had to be totally re-engineered and the codes rewritten to ensure that all of the proportions work perfectly.

Czapek & Cie Antarctique Passage de Drake Salmon S

The 38.5mm case is defined by the same taut lines that characterize the original Antarctique but now the sides are flat, rather than cut away, and the shoulders protecting the crown have been subtly pared back – simplifications that achieve better visual balance in the smaller dimensions. And Czapek’s attention to detail went beyond just the visual: the weight of the watch on the wrist had to feel appropriate to its reduced size.

Czapek & Cie Antarctique Passage de Drake Salmon S

Czapek has also enhanced the design of the integrated bracelet. With less space between the lugs at the attachment point, the long, subtly curving line that tapers from the widest point of the case to the narrowest point of the bracelet had to be carefully studied and adjusted to achieve perfect harmony.

Czapek & Cie Antarctique Passage de Drake Salmon S
Czapek & Cie Antarctique Passage de Drake Salmon S

The bracelet of Antarctique S incorporates brushed steel links connected by highly polished links in the form of a stylized “C” for Czapek. Like its predecessor, it also features a quick-change system that enables owners to quickly and easily switch to the additional rubber or leather strap that comes with the watch.

Czapek & Cie Antarctique Passage de Drake Glacier Blue S
Czapek & Cie Antarctique Passage de Drake Glacier Blue S

On the dials, atypical colors and intriguing textures provide a perfect backdrop for strongly sculptured indexes. The Antarctique S will initially be offered with a choice of three dials, all created in partnership with the dial specialist Metalem.

Czapek’s signature ‘Stairway to Eternity’ pattern is presented in the Passage de Drake Glacier Blue and Salmon, the three-dimensional stamped surface of the trapezoidal motif creating a play of light and shadows across the dial. The former appears to alternate between pale blue and silver with the movement of the wrist, and latter from a soft peachy tone to a richer, almost honeyed shade of salmon.

Czapek & Cie Antarctique Frozen Star S
Czapek & Cie Antarctique Frozen Star S

The ‘Frozen Star’ dial is made from the rarest precious metal on Earth – osmium. Very hard, dense and heavy, and one of the six platinum group metals, it was discovered in 1803 by British chemist Smithson Tennant.

Czapek & Cie Antarctique Frozen Star S

Shimmering as the light catches it – from a deep bluish-grey to almost white-blue – the osmium dial of the Antarctique S creates a dramatic contrast to the cool silvery tones of the steel case and bracelet.

Czapek & Cie Antarctique Frozen Star S

The Antarctique S is powered by the SXH5 caliber, the first movement to be entirely conceived in-house by Czapek and launched in the original Antarctique in May 2020.

Czapek & Cie Antarctique Passage de Drake Salmon S watch case back

Inspired by the 19th century pocket watches of François Czapek, its distinctive architecture of seven skeletonised bridges is immediately recognizable.

Czapek & Cie Antarctique Passage de Drake Glacier Blue S

Taking the best from both the past and present of watchmaking, it features a free-sprung balance and an elegant and highly efficient micro-rotor of recycled 950 platinum; the haute horlogerie finishes combine hand-bevelled internal angles with state-of-the-art laser engraving to create a beautiful play of contrasts: light and dark, textured and smooth, matte and polished.

The Antarctique S watch is available on Czapek.com, from the flagship Czapek boutique in Geneva, at 18 rue de la Corraterie, and from all Czapek & Cie official retailers.

Czapek & Cie Faubourg de Cracovie Collection: The Purple Panda and the California Blue

Swiss luxury watch brand Czapek & Cie has added two new limited editions to the Faubourg de Cracovie chronograph family: the Purple Panda and the California Blue.

Czapek & Cie Faubourg de Cracovie Purple Panda

The Purple Panda edition features the exclusive registered “Résonance” guilloche pattern has been tinged with a magnificent deep purple color, contrasting with the white of the chronograph’s minute and hour counters.

Czapek & Cie Faubourg de Cracovie Purple Panda

The California Blue variant has a deep and intense blue grainé dial, and echoes the numbering called “Californian” already used for the Faubourg de Cracovie California Dreamin’ model – half in Roman and half in Arabic numerals. In turn, the California Dreamin’ was inspired by the very first watch in the brand’s modern history, created to raise the initial funds to relaunch the Czapek & Cie name.

Czapek & Cie Faubourg de Cracovie California Blue

Both timepieces are powered by the Czapek SXH3 caliber, made by Vaucher Manufacture Fleurier in a bespoke execution for Czapek. It is a COSC certified, integrated column-wheel chronograph with vertical engagement and high frequency – 36,000 vibrations per hour or 5 Hertz. This automatic haute horlogerie movement comes with excellent finishes such as sandblasting and snailed finish.

Czapek & Cie Faubourg de Cracovie California Blue

Made in just 18 pieces each, the two new timepieces will be available in official Czapek & Cie retailers worldwide and on Czapek.com from March 2022.

Czapek Antarctique Passage de Drake Glacier Blue & Antarctique Passage de Drake Salmon

Czapek expands its Antarctique Passage de Drake family of watches by launching the Passage de Drake Glacier Blue, which will be part of the regular collection, and the Passage de Drake Salmon, a limited edition of 99 pieces.

Czapek Antarctique Passage de Drake Glacier Blue

Both the Passage de Drake Salmon and Glacier Blue dials feature the Czapek “Stairway to Eternity” registered pattern, an atypical trapezoid motif whose three-dimensional stamped surface creates a play of shadows across the dial. While the salmon color is created by “galvanoplastie”, galvanic treatment, the Glacier Blue hue could only be produced with a PVD (physical vapor deposition) treatment. In both cases, Czapek collaborated with its Swiss-based longtime partner Metalem.

Czapek Antarctique Passage de Drake Salmon

Both timepieces are powered by the 30mm SXH5 automatic caliber, the first Czapek in-house movement. Its powerful microrotor, made of fully recycled platinum 950, is placed off-center to allow a plunging view into the mechanism.

Czapek Antarctique Passage de Drake Salmon

The gear train is held in place by a series of seven skeletonized bridges whose shape is inspired by both the XIX century pocket watches, and by the very modern Czapek Faubourg de Cracovie chronograph’s rotor. The movement has superlative finishing on the bridges merging Haute Horlogerie angling techniques with state-ot-the-art laser engravings.

Czapek Antarctique Passage de Drake Glacier Blue

The Passage de Drake Glacier Blue and Salmon are equipped with the new micro-adjustment system for the Antarctique stainless steel bracelet, introduced in December 2021.

Czapek Antarctique Passage de Drake Salmon

Customers purchasing these new references – as well as any other Antarctique Passage de Drake – now have the possibility to choose between the “12” in Arabic numerals or the double index “II” at twelve o’clock on the dial.

Czapek Antarctique Passage de Drake Glacier Blue

Additionally, Czapek offers other customization options, such as the second hand – which can be either fully red, plain, or with a red tip -, a personalized engraving on the case back, a fully brushed metal bracelet for a sportier feeling, and a complimentary additional strap in rubber or leather.

All the steps are done by hand, so that each dial is unique.

Czapek & Cie Antarctique Emerald Iceberg Limited Edition

Czapek & Cie Antarctique Rattrapante Limited Edition

Swiss luxury watch brand Czapek & Cie presents Antarctique Rattrapante, the latest model in its Antarctique family, the modern and sportive line introduced in 2020.

The Czapek & Cie Antarctique Rattrapante is the first split-second chronograph whose fascinating mechanism is visible from the dial side.

Czapek & Cie Antarctique Rattrapante Limited Edition

A split-second chronograph is one of the most complex horological mechanisms. The Calibre SHX6, Czapek’s proprietary movement created in collaboration with Chronode, is a work of art from the mechanical and aesthetic standpoint. For one, the number and thickness of the main components had to be reduced to make sure the timepiece would keep its streamlined look and feel and fit well into the 42.5-millimeter case.

Czapek & Cie Antarctique Rattrapante Limited Edition

The focus of the movement is the tripod bridge in the centre that holds down a patented satellite minute train and the patent-pending split-second mechanism just below.

The two column wheels, one at the top (for the chronograph) and the bottom (for the split-second mechanism) divide the movement into two halves. The minute totaliser at four o’clock and the small seconds at seven o’clock serve as visual anchors to this high flying, modern and dynamic timepiece, and maintain the link to the company’s spiritus rector, the great nineteenth-century watchmaker, François Czapek, who was using vertical symmetry as an aesthetic guide.

Czapek & Cie Antarctique Rattrapante Limited Edition

The Antarctique Rattrapante comes with Czapek’s bespoke stainless-steel bracelet, whose links are shaped as a stylized letter C. It will be available at the brand’s boutique in Geneva, official retailers and online at Czapek.com as a subscription in a limited edition of 77 pieces.

Czapek & Cie Antarctique Rattrapante “Sunrise”, Unique Piece for Only Watch 2021

Swiss luxury watchmaker Czapek & Cie supports Only Watch for the third time with a unique piece, inspired by this year’s Only Watch official hues.

This year the Geneva-based brand will donate a truly fascinating unique piece, the Antarctique Rattrapante “Sunrise”. A split-second monopusher chronograph with a unique open-worked dial, the Antarctique Rattrapante “Sunrise” combines the bright Only Watch 2021 official colours – yellow, orange and red.

The partners involved in this project are Chronode (the movement specialist) and Positive Coating, the CVD ‘NanoDeCo’ technology experts in La Chaux de Fonds.

Czapek & Cie Antarctique Rattrapante “Sunrise”, Unique Piece for Only Watch 2021

The Antarctique Rattrapante “Sunrise” is based on Czapek’s sport-chic collection Antarctique, released in 2020. The Czapek proprietary split-second module, created in collaboration with Chronode, brings the line to the next generation, entering the ‘grande complication’ universe.

It is the first open-work dial side split-second chronograph with a patented satellite minute wheel train and a patent-pending split-second mechanism. The CVD-coated orange split-second main plate, minutes ring and subdials in sapphire glass with fumé coating, as well as the Czapek signature “Courage every second” inscription visible on the dial side between 12 and 2 o’clock, make the watch even more unique.

The Antarctique Rattrapante “Sunrise” will be auctioned at the Only Watch 9th edition, which will take place on Saturday November 6th 2021.

Czapek & Cie Place Vendôme Tourbillon “Dark Matter” Limited Edition

Inspired by the Place Vendôme ‘Ombres’ in titanium, the new Czapek & Cie Place Vendôme Tourbillon ‘Dark Matter’ watch features a black titanium case with ADLC coating and dark bridges with PVD treatment.

Czapek & Cie Czapek Place Vendôme Tourbillon "Dark Matters" Limited Edition

Among the three families of Czapek & Cie watches, the Place Vendôme is the most refined and complex. Launched in 2017 with two models in limited edition in platinum and red gold, the collection boasts a proprietary caliber with a ‘suspended’ tourbillon, a GMT function and the indication of day and night in the second time zone, as well as of the power reserve.

Czapek & Cie Czapek Place Vendôme Tourbillon "Dark Matters" Limited Edition

At Baselword 2019, Czapek presented two new entries in the collection: a sumptuous version in platinum with a baguette-cut diamonds setting, ‘Etincelles’, and a sporty model in titanium with a black enamel ring, ‘Ombres’.

Czapek & Cie Czapek Place Vendôme Tourbillon "Dark Matters" Limited Edition

During the Geneva Watch Days 2020 luxury watch exhibition, the Geneva based brand unveiled the ‘Dark Matter’ edition. This new timepiece is not only inspired by the Ombres tourbillon in titanium, but takes elements from other watches in the Czapek portfolio.

Czapek & Cie Czapek Place Vendôme Tourbillon "Dark Matters" Limited Edition

The 43.5mm case, in 5- grade titanium, features a black ADLC coating as the Faubourg de Cracovie ‘Courage every second’ chronograph – the unique piece donated by Czapek to the Only Watch charity event and auctioned off by Christies for 110’000 CHF on November 9th 2019.

Czapek & Cie Czapek Place Vendôme Tourbillon "Dark Matters" Limited Edition

The fine-looking black bridges of the Dark Matter have been treated with PVD coating, ensuring the conservation of the colour over time, by the same company that crafts the blued gold Fleur-de-Lys hands in the Quai des Bergues collection.

Manufactured in a limited edition of 10 pieces, the timepiece will be only available at the brand’s official retailers and on czapek.com.

Czapek & Cie Quai des Bergues “Sursum Corda”

Czapek & Cie presents the new Quai des Bergues “Sursum Corda” – a unique piece created to celebrate the 175th anniversary of the company.

The timepiece is based on the Quai des Bergues calibre and gold case – the company’s first collection. The Sursum Corda dial features a world map in cloisonné enamel enclosed within a brushed white gold ring, and an outer hour ring with beautiful hand engraved waves. Laser blasting, cutting and soft sand blasting are employed to create a velvet effect.

Czapek & Cie Quai des Bergues “Sursum Corda”

The base plate of the dial was cast by Precinox in La-Chaux-de-Fonds, and is made from a special white gold alloy in order to facilitate all these techniques. The cloisonné world map is made by Donze Cadrans.

Czapek & Cie Quai des Bergues “Sursum Corda”

The continents are displayed in a blue/grey finish and softly blasted to feature the terrain. Each continent is then contained within thin (0.1 mm) walls of white gold, barriers against the five seas which are finished in turquoise. The ring encompassing the world bears the Latin inscription “Sursum Corda” – along with its English translation “Lift Up your Hearts”. Additionally, the motto is also shown in the three main Swiss languages, French, German and Italian.

Czapek & Cie Quai des Bergues “Sursum Corda”

Finally, hand-engraving of the outer ring was executed by master engraver Michele Rothen, following a design by Adrian Buchmann. The hand-engraving of the dial took more than 40 hours to complete. Other dial features – such as the small seconds sub-dial, inscriptions ring and hour ring, were manufactured by Metalem.

Czapek & Cie Quai des Bergues “Sursum Corda”

This unique watch is powered by the Czapek manually wound proprietary SXH calibre, which features: hours, minutes and small seconds functions, along with an impressive 7-day power reserve.

Czapek & Cie Antarctique

The Geneva based luxury watch brand Czapek & Cie announces Antarctique, an extra ordinary Swiss made luxury sports-watch that combines sophisticated style with an exceptional in-house movement.

The Czapek & Cie Antarctique is a powerful automatic sports watch that is thin enough to slip comfortably under a cuff, and with a carefully-honed, edgy look. The transparent case back reveals the powerful, 30-millimeter SXH5.01 automatic caliber, conceived exclusively by Czapek’s concepteur, Daniel Martinez. Special attention was given to both performance and appearance, so the movement’s parts are arranged for visual harmony and transparency.

Czapek & Cie Antarctique Watch Collection, The Terre Adélie Limited Edition

The architecture of the movement is also exceptional. At the root is a free-sprung balance wheel with variable inertia provided by four gold masselotte weights, which enables the highest level of precision tuning for a mechanical watch.

Czapek & Cie Antarctique Watch Collection, The Terre Adélie Limited Edition

The micro-rotor was manufactured in La-Chaux-de-Fonds out of a very special ‘fully recycled’ 18-kt gold supplied by AGOSI. It was placed off-centre to allow a plunging view into the mechanism. The SXH5.01 beats at 28,800 vph. The single barrel harbours a flat spring wound via the traditional Czapek ratchet wheel with five arms. The timepiece has a power reserve of at least fifty-six hours, a truly remarkable feat for a micro-rotor.

Czapek & Cie Antarctique Watch Collection, The Terre Adélie Limited Edition

Every part of the Antarctique has been made with a level of care to detail close to obsession. For instance, the gear train is held in place by a series of seven handsome skeletonized bridges inspired by nineteenth-century pocket watches.

Czapek & Cie Antarctique Watch Collection, The Terre Adélie Limited Edition

Their unique shape, which has been added to the Swiss design register, does recall the Czapek Faubourg de Cracovie chronograph rotor. It proves that stringent watchmaking craftsmanship can be further enhanced with a hint of free-floating creativity, as if form were an equal party to function. The straight-grained sides and the six chamfered inward angles are other hallmarks of a high-end timepiece.

Czapek & Cie Antarctique, The Terre Adélie Model with Steel case, Black Ink Dial and Integrated stainless steel bracelet
Czapek & Cie Antarctique, The Terre Adélie Model with Steel case, Black Ink Dial and Integrated stainless steel bracelet

The Antarctique’s dial was designed and manufactured by Metalem, a Czapek & Cie cooperation partner, using a unique lamé technique, invented by them 30 years ago and revamped today for this project. This technique consists in creating a series of traits on the dial with a comb. These characteristic striations give the colours more depth and starker reflections.

Edgy three-dimensional indexes are applied on this handcrafted pattern as if they were bridges over the ocean. On the dial, the date window is positioned at 6 o’clock to maintain the Czapek aesthetics based on vertical symmetry. The hands design is reminiscent of a sword, sporty and easy-to-read, as well as the indexes.

The 40.5mm stainless steel case is integrated with an original double ‘trompe l’oeil’ curve, another unconventional design choice making this timepiece unique and exclusive. It is rounded off by an ergonomic brushed integrated bracelet, whose links mesh to form a highly polished “C” for Czapek.

A great deal of attention was put on the bracelet, its feeling when placed on the wrist, comfort, lightness and its capability to be forgotten by its wearer and suddenly reveal its stunning beauty creating an intense pleasure.

As Czapek has developed an exclusive quick-change system, an additional strap is provided. Customer can choose between a soft and elegant calf bracelet and a sportier-looking rubber strap. The watch is water-resistant up to 120 meters.

About the SXH5 Caliber

Czapek & Cie SXH5.01 Caliber is a self-winding micro-rotor movement that drives hour, minutes and central seconds as well as calendar function. This high-end movement was conceived in-house and “from scratch” by the Czapek team.

This horological engine boasts an exceptional architecture with 7 bridges cut out like lace allowing a clear view of the finishing (the gear train). The original bridges’ shape ia inspired by 19th century movements and by Czapek Faubourg de Cracovie chronograph’s rotor.

The movement features superlative finishes with hand chamfering of 6 inward angles and drawing of the flanks. Its 8.8 Newton mm single barrel loaded by a micro-rotor in certified 100% recycled 18k gold to free up the view on the movement and let it remain reasonably flat and thin (4.5mm). The SXH5.01 caliber provides an impressive power reserve of 56 hours.

The movement is 100% Swiss made (gold excepted) with a majority of components exclusive to Czapek. The 8 mg.cm² variable inertia balance wheel allows precise adjustment and excellent chronometry. The SXH5.01 is a powerful movement with an optimal balance of inertia and torque to achieve perfect isochronism and power horse versatility,

The exclusive date indication positioned at 6 o’clock stays true to Czapek’s aesthetics based on vertical symmetry. The movement was realized with the involvement of at least 15 partners and co-creators such as the prototype maker Emmanuel Bouchet, Atokalpa, Générale Ressort and many others.

Czapek & Cie Quai des Bergues Aurora Borealis and Blue Aurora

Czapek & Cie unveils two new timepieces from its Quai des Bergues series: the Aurora Borealis and the Blue Aurora. Both models boast a unique guilloché pattern dial created by Czapek’s partner Metalem SA.

Czapek & Cie Quai des Bergues Aurora Borealis

The Quai des Bergues Aurora Borealis comes with a 42.5 mm steel case and the bombé guilloche dial is handcrafted on Czapek’s ‘secret alloy’, made of gold, silver, palladium and platinum. The dial is available in two different colours, both refined and sophisticated: silver, for the Aurora Borealis, and dark blue for the Blue Aurora.

Czapek & Cie Quai des Bergues Aurora Borealis

Both are equipped by Czapek SXH1 proprietary caliber, with two barrel springs delivering a 7-days power reserve, developed in collaboration with Chronode.

Czapek & Cie Quai des Bergues Aurora Borealis

Unveiled for the first time in Baselworld 2017, Czapek exclusive Ricochet® guilloché is inspired by an original design created by Francois Czapek in the 1850s. Its uniqueness is in the presence of two focal points corresponding to the signature Czapek subdials – indication of small seconds and power reserve. The intersecting lines create a mesmerizing ‘wave interference’ effect on the dial.

Czapek & Cie Quai des Bergues Blue Aurora

The guilloché Ricochet® pattern, registered by Czapek & Cie, has been developed by the Geneva-based Maison in collaboration with its partner Metalem, one of the best Swiss ateliers for handmade engine-turned dials. The dials of the Quai des Bergues Aurora Borealis and Blue Aurora are an evolution of the guilloché Ricochet®.

Czapek & Cie Quai des Bergues Blue Aurora

The two new models are limited to 10 pieces each. The 1/10 of the Blue Aurora has already been acquired by a watch collector on the occasion of a special event.

Czapek & Cie Quai des Bergues Midnight in Geneva S Limited Edition

In January 2019, on the occasion of the opening of its first boutique in Geneva, Switzerland, Czapek & Cie launched the limited-edition “Midnight in Geneva”, part of the Quai des Bergues collection. This model features a 42.5mm stainless steel case and a fascinating dark blue aventurine dial that inspired its name.

Following the successful launch of the Midnight in Geneva, Czapek received many requests from fans and collectors to create a smaller version of the timepiece. However, due to the tiny space between the external edges of the subdials at 4:30 and 7:30 and the bezel, this seemed to be impossible. One year and many attempts later, the goal has been accomplished and the new unisex timepiece is released in a limited edition of 18 pieces.

Czapek & Cie Quai des Bergues Midnight in Geneva S Limited Edition

Besides its rare and stunning dial, the Midnight in Geneva S features titanium Fleur-de-Lys hands finished with silver powder, matching with the rail track and the hour markers.

Like all the models in the Quai des Bergues collection, this watch is powered by Czapek SHX1 proprietary calibre, a hand-wound movement with two spring barrels and a power reserve of 168 hours (7 days). Developed in collaboration with Chronode, the movement is finely decorated with open ratchets, blued screws, bevelled edges and sand-blasted bridges.

The Quai des Bergues Midnight in Geneva S is available at Czapek official retailers, at the brand’s flagship boutique in Geneva, rue de la Corraterie 18, and on Czapek.com.

Czapek & Cie. Faubourg de Cracovie Only Watch 2019 ‘’Courage every second’’

For the second time, Czapek & Cie. supports the fight against muscular dystrophy with a one-of-a-kind piece, the Faubourg de Cracovie Only Watch, a black onyx and striped chalcedony dial version of its audacious and charming sporty chronograph. Chalcedony is a light blue rare semi precious stone with natural stripes.

The light blue hue pays tribute to the Only Watch 2019 official colour. The dial of the watch hosts the inscription ‘’Courage every second’’, the same sentence that was secretly engraved on the enamel dial of the unique piece created by the Geneva based brand for Only Watch 2017.

Czapek & Cie. Faubourg de Cracovie Only Watch 2019 ‘’Courage every second’’

The 41.5 mm grade-5 titanium case with black ADLC coating is fitted with a sapphire crystal glass box.

The watch is powered by the SXH3 caliber, a 5Hz, column-wheel, automatic chronograph movement that makes use of some of the most advanced and effective mechanical elements, like the linear hammer, which reduces wear and tear on parts and resets all the associated dials in one easy movement. A modern solution, the vertical clutch, ensures a perfect start for the chronograph hand.

Czapek & Cie Quai des Bergues Sapphire Blue S

This 38.5mm Quai des Bergues S watch made by Czapek & Cie features a striking blue ‘flinqué’ enamel dial, a technique combining geometric patterns with enamelling. The pattern used with the ‘flinqué’ technique was so recognizable that it gave it its name. Nowadays any pattern can be used in a flinqué dial.

Czapek & Cie Quai des Bergues Sapphire Blue S

Czapek had its partner Metalem recreate its own Ricochet® design – a motif inspired by the ripples of a stone skipped on a lake – on a stamping tool. Once the décor is stamped on a silver plate, an intense ‘moiré’ blue enamel is applied by another Czapek partner, Donzé Cadran. It is fired in a kiln to harden the enamel. The process is repeated several times until the right hue is achieved.

The sapphire blue was created after months of research, countless iterations and following the advice of a panel of Czapek shareholders and collectors. It took a year to Czapek to develop this blue dial with its partner, the enamel dial specialist Donzé Cadran.

Czapek & Cie Quai des Bergues Sapphire Blue S

The Czapek Quai des Bergues Sapphire Blue S is powered by the hand-wound caliber SXH1, a proprietary movement boasting seven days of power reserve. A 100-piece limited edition, it will be available in Czapek’s boutique in Geneva, rue de la Corraterie 18, through the brand’s official retailers and on czapek.com.

Czapek & Cie New Enamel Dial Watches

Following the release of new dial variants in January, Swiss luxury watch brand Czapek & Cie has presented four of the company’s tried-and-true models at Baselworld 2019 as a special series: They have received new dials in brilliant enamel variations, thanks to collaborations with Czapek’s shareholders and manufacturing partners.

The Quai des Bergues 25ter, for example, has a brilliant Grand-Feu white dial, which harmonises well with the keen edged 42.5-millimeter steel case. It gives the watch a natural lightness and clarity. Another Quai des Bergues, this time an S model in 38.5mm, was used to try out a new approach to the “flinqué” technique, which combines guilloché with enamel.

In this case, Czapek partner Metalem recreated the company’s own Ricochet design on a stamping tool which was then applied to a silver plate. A blue enamel with an exclusive sapphire tone was then added by Donzé Cadrans. The hue was created following the inputs of a panel of Czapek shareholders and collectors.

The grand-feu technique, which bakes the enamel at over 800°C will give brilliance and exuberance to a white dial. Black enamel, on the other hand, becomes ocean-deep and mysterious. To achieve this effect perfectly for the Quai des Bergues Black Enamel S, the normally vaulted dial plate had to be flattened to ensure the even spread of the enamel application.

Finally, Czapek decided to use enamelling to create the 41.5-millimeter Faubourg de Cracovie Tao, an unprecedented black and white Grand-Feu enamel “panda” watch. The two subdials at 9 and 3 o’clock have been slightly sunken into the striking white dial and appear in shiny black, like the eyes of a panda – the famous analogy used to describe such chronographs.

The subsidiary seconds dial at 6 o’clock has remained white, with the date almost incorporated creating a kind of mouth for the panda. Finally, the 12 in Roman numeral is still red as a focal point of the watch.

Czapek & Cie Place Vendôme Collection, New Models: Etincelles and Ombres

During the Baselworld exhibition, Czapek & Cie has launched two special luxurious editions of its Place Vendôme watch, featuring a tourbillon and a GMT function.

The model called “Ombres,” or “shadows,” comes in a grade 5 titanium. It is not only lighter on the wrist, but has a rugged, faintly greyish tint that creates an elemental feeling. The case stretchers have been carefully machined and sandblasted.

The watch face, delicately framed by a thinner bezel, is anchored at the lower end by the suspended tourbillon at 8 o’clock and the second time zone at 4 o’clock. Between the two is the day/night indicator in the second time zone. At 12 o’clock, the time giving dial stares from a sombre dial, justifying the name of the model.

The second watch in this special edition is as different in style as day and night. “Etincelles,” or sparks, earns its name from a train of seventy-two baguette diamonds that grace the bezel and cascade onto the lugs.

They illuminate the watch and highlight the alabaster whiteness of the enamel dial, further accentuating the light that sparkles at each movement of the wrist. They also turn the watch into an elegant dress timepiece for special occasions.

The 43,5-millimeter model comes in a platinum case that has retained all the features of the original Place Vendôme, notably the refined Fleur de Lys hands on the main watch dial.

Etincelles and Ombres are driven by the tried-and-true, hand-wound SXH2 Czapek proprietary movement developed with Chronode. This elegant engine can be seen through the transparent case back. Ombres will be in a limited edition of 25 pieces, whereas Etincelles will come in a limited edition of 10 pieces.

Czapek & Cie – The Sands of Time (The Hourglass Created In Partnership with Czech Luxury Crystal Brand Moser Glassworks)

The Swiss luxury watch brand Czapek & Cie has joined forces with Moser Glassworks, a historic Czech glass manufacturer, to create an outstanding sculpture of Bohemian crystal that doubles as a device to measure time.

The hourglass is one of the first instruments invented by man to measure the passage of time. And like all time-tellers, it has its own way of expressing itself. It represents the inexorable flow of time, and also balance. The hourglass invites us to watch each moment slip by and to seize it.

Czapek and Moser Glassworks, two companies with roots combining a mid- 19th century birth with a Czech-born founder, chose this emblematic object to launch an unusual collaboration imagined by a common friend and shareholder.

The dialogue between the two brands began with the idea of exploring the concept of the beauty of time. The initial thought of producing a collection of crystal clocks blossomed into a collaboration on an hourglass, a pure, original and refined product. Czapek and Moser designers worked closely to create this crystal marvel whose very shape appears timeless. Various elements are conjoined to make this fine 20-centimeter tall object of eternal beauty.

Earth is represented by the glassmaking sand, the silica crystals (Si O₂) in their purest form, quartz, which Moser is famous for and remains among the very few to use it in the world. A combination of oxides are used to colour the Moser crystal, which is not leaded and therefore ecologically sound. The base mixture is then fired, melted into enamel, and then cast into hand-crafted wooden moulds. The final object is shaped by air blown by Moser’s skilled Masters. Water, finally, is used to cool down the mould and the hands of the glassmaker. The hourglass was built to count out five minutes that flow with a slight whisper from top to bottom.

The Czapek & Cie and Moser Glassworks “Sands of Time” hourglass will be produced in 18 pieces only and will be on sale in the two brands’ boutiques and exclusive retailers at a price of CHF 5’000 from May 2019.

Technical details

• Hand-made by Moser Glassworks master glassmakers
• Mouth blown from the pure unleaded ecological crystal glass
• Hand cut and hand polished to a high gloss
• Pure un-leaded crystal glass, silica crystals (Si O2)
• Height: 22,5 cm
• Time measured: 5 mins

About Moser Glassworks
The luxury crystal brand is named after Ludwig Moser, who established his own engraving workshop and glass shop near the famous Market Colonnade in Karlovy Vary, in March 1857. Within a quarter-century, he had laid the foundations for glassworks, where master glass-blowers, cutters, painters and engravers created unique art works from pure, un-leaded crystal. Luxury beverage sets, decorative objects and Moser master-engravings are popular items among fans of original crystal objects the world round. In the Czech Republic, Moser is perceived as the most luxurious Czech brand.

Czapek & Cie Faubourg de Cracovie – New References: Chinook, Coho, Sockeye and King

Czapek & Cie’s first chronograph series, the Faubourg de Cracovie, now comes in salmon, silver and blue models.

The first Czapek chronograph Faubourg de Cracovie was unveiled at Baselworld 2018. The four new Faubourg de Cracovie references were unveiled for the opening of Czapek & Cie’s first boutique, located on Geneva’s emblematic rue de la Corraterie.

The timepieces are ironically named after the finest and most famous salmon species from the Pacific Ocean: Chinook, Coho, Sockeye and King. Inspiration for these models came from a unique piece created by the company for a collector who had requested a bespoke Quai des Bergues with a salmon guilloché dial and blue hands and numerals.

The salmon and blue Faubourg de Cracovie features a hand-engraved guilloché dial made by the craftspeople at Metalem, Czapek’s partner in Le Locle. The special pattern, called “Résonance,” is derived from the “Ricochet” pattern of the Quai des Bergues collection: concentric circles originating from the two subdials at 3 and 9 o’clock intersect and form bas-relief squares. The dial and the subdials, a trademark of the Czapek brand, are made of “alloy 401,” a combination of 55% gold completed by a mixture of platinum, palladium and silver.

The salmon finish, with its golden hues, is done by electroplating. The colour is unique and gives a special feel to the engraving and the “shadows” at the edges of the engine-turned pattern. The 41.5-millimeter steel case recalls the distinctive “Revolution” case of the Quai des Bergues collection, where the crown protectors serve as pushers for the chronograph functions.

Like all the references in the collection, these four new models are animated by the proprietary Czapek SXH3 calibre. This integrated column-wheel chronograph movement was built by Vaucher Manufacture Fleurier. It delivers 65 hours of power reserve from a single barrel that drives the balance wheel at 36,000 vph. The movement employs some of the most advanced and high-performing mechanical elements, like the linear hammer and the vertical clutch, ensuring a perfect start for the chronograph hand.

Finally, the diamond-blasted anthracite bridges give the final contemporary and sporty aesthetic twist to the movement visible through the transparent case back.

An expression of casual elegance and strong personality, these models will be available as of March at a retail price of CHF 24,000 (recommended international price excluding taxes).

Czapek & Cie acquires a historic reference No. 535 pocket watch

Swiss luxury watch brand Czapek has announced the acquisition of watch No. 535 at Sotheby’s Important Watch auction.

The timepiece, made by Patek, Czapek & Cie in 1842, is a very rare and early yellow gold open faced stem winding cylinder watch. Purchase was made possible by the joint efforts of twenty Czapek & Cie shareholders. It represents a historic moment for the company on its way to re-establishing Francois Czapek’s name and fame and contribute creatively to the world of independent high-end watchmaking.

The auction took place on May 13 at Sotheby’s in Geneva. The lot was bought for 65,000 Swiss Francs (many times more than the estimated value of 7,000-10,000 Swiss Francs).

Patek, Czapek & Cie reference No. 535 pocket watch

Patek, Czapek & Cie’s Reference No. 535 is a rare horological treasure. In 1839, Francois Czapek and Anton de Patek launched a six-year-long joint watchmaking business. Patek, Czapek & Cie is thought to have produced approximately two hundred watches per year.

Watch No. 535 is one of only forty-two pieces that was made with the stem winding system, otherwise known as keyless watches. This makes it one of the earliest surviving pieces. To the best of Sotheby’s knowledge, it has never before been offered at auction (the earliest number with a stem winding system is No. 171).

Patek, Czapek & Cie reference No. 535 pocket watch

Patek, Czapek & Cie used stem winding systems made by Louis Audemars of Le Brassus from 1839 to 1845. Audemars was considered one of the pioneers of the keyless watch and sold unfinished movements to many firms in Geneva including Patek, Czapek & Cie.

Though Jean Adrien Philippe is known as the inventor of the modern keyless stem-winding mechanism for watches, his stem-winding system only got patented in 1845 (French patent No. 1317).

Patek, Czapek & Cie reference No. 535 pocket watch

The reference No 535 has a diameter of 47.5 millimetres. It is also atypical for its large size, which was likely due to the space needs of the stem winding system.

It features a pendent winding mechanism, an exquisite engraved dial, and an engraved damask-style yellow-gold case with a lion in the center. The watch comes with archival documents confirming the year of manufacture as 1842 and date of sale on April 29, 1844.

Patek, Czapek & Cie reference No. 535 pocket watch

Watch No 535 is a major acquisition for Czapek& Cie. It follows the purchase in 2017 of a Czapek & Cie women’s pocket watch from 1850’s.

Czapek & Cie Faubourg de Cracovie

Presented at the Baselworld watch fair in 2018, the Faubourg de Cracovie chronograph collection from Swiss luxury watch brand Czapek & Cie combines traditional refinement with the sportive function.

The Faubourg de Cracovie comes in a slightly modified 41.5-millimeter Quai des Bergues Revolution case in steel. The famous crown protectors are still in place and now serve, ingeniously, as pushers. The dial, under an edgy sapphire crystal, is also unmistakably Czapek: The two signature subdials have been enlarged and moved up to 3 and 9 o’clock positions, where they now display the chronograph’s minutes and hours respectively.

A small seconds subdial shares the date spot at 6 o’clock. The razor fine “trotteuse” chronograph hand stands out thanks to its bright red tip, which homes in on an equally visible red Roman “12” or “60” at the top of the hour, depending on the model.

The Faubourg de Cracovie employs two different dial crafts. One style reintroduces the fascinating guilloché “Ricochet” of the Quai des Bergues collection. Intersecting circular lines form a pattern of bas-relief squares that make the dial come alive, recalling the wave interference pattern a stone might make when ricocheting on water. This traditional technique was made possible by the rose engine lathe, which was devised in the late Eighteenth century and became a key machine in fine dial-making.

The other dial, coated with brilliant grand-feu white enamel, is perhaps the most unexpected in a modern chronograph. It provides a contrasting backdrop for the various functions displayed and the watch’s delicately skeletonized hands. The two welded subdials have been enlarged to the maximum technically possible for greater visual balance. The dial shape is “bombé”, another technical prowess of Donzé Cadrans and at the same time the illustration of Czapek & Cie spirit. Finally, the brand’s “secret signature” adorns once again the enamel.

The three new models are called “Grand Feu”, “L’Heure Bleue” and “Dioné & Rhéa”. The watch is driven by the SXH3 integrated column-wheel chronograph movement built by Vaucher Manufacture Fleurier. This automatic movement delivers 65h power reserve from a single barrel that drives the balance wheel at 36,000 vph.

The movement features a linear hammer, which reduces wear and tear on parts and resets all the associated dials in one easy movement. A modern solution, the vertical clutch, ensures a perfect start for the chronograph hand. Finally, the diamond-blasted anthracite bridges give the final aesthetic twist to the movement visible through the transparent case back.

The Faubourg de Cracovie chronograph is the company’s third collection and was named after the location of Czapek third boutique, which he opened in 1850 in Warsaw, Poland.

Czapek & Cie Engine-Turned Dials Collection – Black Prince, Havana Brown, Slate Grey, Red Rhubarb and Rainforest Green Versions

During last autumn, Czapek & Cie released its first engine turned dial series in Aqua Blue and Sea Salt Grey versions. In the first two new models, the Sea Salt Grey version shows off the detail of the engine turning and the distinctive angle of depth of the grooves that can only be achieved by hand turning on a rose engine. On the Aqua Blue version, however, the colour hue changes with the reflection of light, allowing aesthetics to get the upper hand over the technical finish of the engine-turned pattern.  In 2018, Czapek & Cie takes this even further with the introduction of some colours rarely seen on engine turned dials.

The “Black Prince” model pairs a black ADLC titanium case with a galvanised black engine-turned dial. The limited edition of 15 pieces is distinctive enough by day, but applications of SuperLuminova on the hands and hour markers add an extra sporty touch that differentiates it from the rest of the collection.

The new “Havana brown” and “Slate Grey” models are equally distinctive with the warm tones of their dials and will be available as a strictly limited edition of just 15 pieces in a rose-gold case for the former and ten pieces in stainless steel for the latter. For these three models, the bold colours of the dial are enhanced with a galvanic coating that plays with light reflections, meaning that the tone of the dial can change according to different light conditions.

The “Red Rhubarb” and “Rainforest Green” version will be available as limited editions of just 10 pieces. In this case the colours are so bold that a galvanic treatment would have been impossible, so Czapek & Cie opted for a lacquer coating on the hand engine-turned finish.

These new watches offer a range of dial colours that subordinate the notion of gender to that of style. The first two new models, the Aqua Blue and Sea Salt Grey, are available in the 42.5mm and 38.5mm case sizes, the Black Prince, Havana Brown and Slate Grey models are only available in the original Czapek & Cie 42.5 mm case.

The Red Rhubarb and Rainforest Green models are only available in the new 38.5mm case. Given that these engine-turned dials are all handmade, they are only available as strictly limited series of between 10 and 25 pieces. Each series is unique and identified by a letter of the alphabet.

Czapek & Cie has chosen to keep these new models engine-turned dials at the same price as those with the grand feu enamel dials, with retail prices starting at 14,800 Swiss francs for the stainless-steel models, rising to 18,000 for the titanium and 25,900 Swiss francs for the gold.

Czapek & Cie Quai des Bergues Guilloché Collection: Aqua Blue, Sea Salt Grey and Emperor Blue

Swiss luxury watch brand Czapek & Cie unveils three new references of its iconic Quai des Bergues collection, featuring a new dial beautifully decorated with a unique handcrafted guilloché pattern.

The Czapek exclusive “Ricochet” guilloché pattern takes the inspiration by an ancient design created by Francois Czapek in the 1850s. Its main characteristic and unique feature is the presence of a double focal point, unlike traditional guilloche patterns with only one focal point at the centre of the dial. The two focal points, corresponding to the two iconic Czapek subdials – indicating small seconds and power reserve – create a fascinating “wave interferences” in the dial.

Unveiled for the first time in Baselworld 2017, the Guilloché “Ricochet” features a bombé guilloché dial in a special gold, silver, palladium and platinum alloy handcrafted by one of the best Swiss ateliers, Metalem. It blends both modern and traditional approaches. For example “Czapek” has been printed directly on the dial rather than engraved in a “cartouche”, to give a touch of modernity together with indexes and one Arabic numeral, while the dial has been “bombé” like the pocket watches’ cases.

The Quai des Bergues Guilloché 2017 collection comes in 3 different colours: Aqua Blue, Sea Salt Grey and the unique piece Emperor Blue.

Czapek & Cie Quai des Bergues Guilloché Aqua Blue
Czapek & Cie Quai des Bergues Guilloché Aqua Blue

The Aqua Blue guilloché dial is proposed in a 42,5 mm XO steel case breaking the rules of traditional watchmaking: usually handcrafted Guilloché, one of the pinnacle of watchmaking craftsmanship, is reserved for Grandes Complications and precious material preventing many watch lovers to access to it.

Czapek & Cie Quai des Bergues Guilloché Sea Salt Grey

The Quai des Bergues Guilloché Sea Salt Grey with its 1N White Gold case combined with the light grey guilloché dial is the most sophisticated and purest model in the line.

The unique piece Quai des Bergues Guilloché Emperor Blue features an original nuance of the blue colour which perfectly matches with the 42.5 mm diameter 5N Rose Gold Case and the Fleur-de-Lys hands. This model features an exquisite blue alligator strap with a special “two-tone patina” treatment giving the look of a shoe patina.

As with every Czapek Quai des Bergues time piece, the movement of the Guilloché models is the Calibre SXH1, a high luxury proprietary mechanical hand-wound movement developed by Czapek in collaboration with Chronode. The movement is magnificently finished with double open ratchets, sandblasted bridges, manual anglage and blued screws.

26 Quai des Bergues Guilloché pieces will be manufactured in 2017.

Czapek & Cie Quai des Bergues N°25ter « Courage Every Second » Only Watch 2017

Swiss luxury watch brand Czapek & Cie has created a unique piece with a very special dial to pay tribute to the children and their families fighting against muscular dystrophy.

The brand has a rich history that dates back to 1832 when a Czech-born Polish watchmaker named François Czapek settled in Geneva and started his own atelier. In 1839 he entered into a partnership with Antoine Norbert de Patek. In 1845, at the end of their partnership, he created Czapek & Cie and achieved considerable success. He became the official watchmaker of Napoleon III and opened what was most likely the first watchmaking boutique on the Place Vendôme in Paris. He wrote a book about watchmaking, one of the first ever written in Polish.

Czapek & Cie has been revived in 2015 with an exceptional collection, whose leading model won the Public Prize in the Grand Prix de l’Horlogerie in Geneva in November 2016. This collection takes its inspiration from a 1850s Czapek timepiece. It features a beautiful enamel dial and is powered by a 7-day proprietary movement, perfectly combining craftsmanship, design, exclusivity and rarity.

The uniqueness of the timepiece dedicated to Only Watch 2017 lies in its enamel ‘Grand Feu’ dial featuring a secret sentence: « Courage every second ». The sentence remains invisible and hence secret until its owner reveals it with a ray of light, for example when the sun is bouncing off the dial at a certain angle.

Technical details
Model: Quai des Bergues N°25ter « Courage every second »

Case
XO Steel: a secret stainless steel alloy unique to Czapek, normally used in the North Sea’s extremely corrosive conditions.
Dimensions: Ø 42.5mm – Thickness 11.8mm

Dial
Immaculate white enamel ‘Grand Feu‘ dial of 36.7mm ø with two welded sub-dials. The large size of the dial reveals a very rare bombé shape created by capillarity, and a ‘secret sentence’ created using a rare enamel making technique. It also boasts a secret signature by Francois Czapek in the small seconds sub-dial.

Movement
The SXH1 is a 3 hertz Czapek proprietary, double- barrel, 7-day, manually wound movement. It is an unusual re-interpretation of the original movement of Czapek model 3430 made in 1850. The movement’s bridges have been finely sandblasted to recall the original frosted nish of the nineteenth century movements. Angles are all nished by hand (bevelling) and ratchets are open as in the original version.

Alligator Mississippiensis « Emperor blue » strap with a stainless steel ardillon buckle

Czapek & Cie Place Vendôme Tourbillon suspendu «Ici et Ailleurs» Limited Edition

Re-launched in 2015, the legendary Swiss watch brand Czapek & Cie presents its new line of haute-horlogerie collection this year as a tribute to Place Vendôme, the famous square in Paris where François Czapek, spiritus rector of the brand, opened a high end luxury watch boutique in the mid-nineteenth century.

Unveiled at this year’s edition of prestigious Basel Fair, the first line of watches in the collection features a one-minute suspended tourbillon. It comes together with a second time zone for today’s world travelers, a day/night disk, and a classic power reserve indicator.

Even with the new functionalities, lovers of the brand will easily recognize the watch’s unusual look with the two subdials at 7:30 and 4:30. On the Place Vendôme, a third has been added at 12 o’clock to display the time. The first series, which will come in a limited edition of ten pieces in platinum and fifteen in Rose Gold, was named “Lumières.” It refers to both the reflections flashing off the beveled edges of the bridges visible on dial side as well as to the Age of Enlightenment, which ultimately produced the tourbillon, the ultimate balance between science and mechanical poetry.

For the 2016 winners of the Public Prize of the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève, the Place Vendôme goes further into channeling the spirit of François Czapek. The characteristic grand-feu enamel of the Quai des Bergues is still used for the dial, as are the fine “fleur de lys” hands pointing to sleek Roman numerals. They are now joined by an anthracite bead-blasted mainplate and suspended bridges of polished steel.

From a technical standpoint, the watch represents an evolution from the more staid, romantic Quai des Bergues. A day-night disc turning counterclockwise has inserted itself between the two subdials, which now carry the tourbillon on the left and the second time zone on the right. The power reserve indicator migrated and now peers out of the clock face at 12 o’clock.

The Place Vendôme “Lumières” is driven by the proprietary, manually wound SXH2 movement beating at 21,600 vph (3 Hz). The single barrel spring delivers a solid 60 hours of power. The 34.8-millimeter diameter is relatively large, but the height of 9.8 millimeters allows the watch to be discreet and elegant in spite of the many functions. The traditional satin-brushed bridges and open-worked ratchet are back again. In the back of the watch is an inscription: Tourbillon suspendu – Ici et Ailleurs.

Czapek & Cie Quai des Bergues Collection

In November this year, Switzerland’s traditional watchmaking industry welcomes revival of the legendary Czapek & Cie brand name. A well established horology brand since nineteenth-century, Czapek & Cie is making a comeback in the industry by launching Quai des Bergues, first contemporary collection of mechanical timepieces from the historic brand. The Quai des Bergues collection, the first family of six models from the brand, will perpetuate the Czapek style and will be perfectly integrated into the haute horlogerie segment.

Czapek & Cie was founded by François Czapek, one of the great figures of nineteenth-century watchmaking. Born in Bohemia (Czech Republic today), Czapek was an associate of Antoine Norbert de Patek, a fellow Pole. Both men lived in Switzerland. But Czapek’s name, while no longer widely known, was uttered in the most prestigious circles in its day. His prized timepieces were hard to come by and were much coveted by the nobility back then. Napoleon III, Emperor of France, even granted him the title Horloger de la Cour Impériale (Court Watchmaker). To this day, Czapek watches are much sought after by collectors.

The revival began when three entrepreneurs in Switzerland received some intelligence from a group of passionate watch enthusiasts in 2013. They were convinced that what they had before them was a genuine historic monument and they decided to organise the Czapek comeback. They hired a well-known historian, fully aware of the fact that the digging work would set the pace for upcoming developments. They also tracked down Czapek timekeepers that had been sold at auctions. The more they researched, the greater their sense of humility and determination became. The first proactive step was to constitute Czapek & Cie, a limited company that respectfully took the name of the company created by François Czapek & Cie on May 1, 1845.

Harry Guhl and Xavier de Roquemaurel, the current owners of Czapek & Cie brand

When gazing at the pocket watch with the reference number 3430, manufactured by François Czapek in Geneva around 1850, the three associates, Harry Guhl, Xavier de Roquemaurel and a watchmaker who prefers to remain unnamed, were fascinated by the timepiece’s sheer elegance and highly identifiable lines: the classy elongation of the Roman numerals, the slimness of the forged hands, and, above all, the unusual positioning of the two subdials, one at 4:30, the other at 7:30.

Pocket Watch Reference Number 3430 by François Czape, Circa 1850

The first collection is named Quai des Bergues, in memory of the spot where François Czapek had his workshop. The knowledge of subcontracted watchmakers converges in this piece, the way one might cite sources. To finance the project, the three company leaders found private investors.

They also sold the Czapek Design Study Chronograph to a small circle of close friends. This chronograph bears an historic caliber, the C73, which dates to 1971. This permitted them to finance research into the design, the development of a proprietary caliber of high quality, as well as the first pre-series. They then chose crowd funding equity, a participative way of financing projects that lets people become investors.

Chronode, the Le Locle-based company of Jean-François Mojon, developed the Czapek SXH1, an haute horlogerie mechanical calibre with 29 jewels. It is finely decorated and remains aesthetically true to the 1850 original. This manually-wound movement has two barrel springs and runs at a rate of 21,600 vibrations per hour, which translates as 3 Hertz. It boasts a power reserve of 168 hours, or seven days.

Czapek SXH1 movement

The case, manufactured by LAB in La Chaux-de-Fonds, comes in rose gold or white gold, titanium, or in “XO” steel, a material that is ultra-resistant to corrosion and has never been used in watchmaking before.

For the classic models (rose or white god), a set of blued steel or forged fleur-de-lys hands sweep the grand feu enamel dial, which has two typically Czapek subdials: one that marks the small seconds, at 7:30, the other, at 4:30, that marks the power reserve and the calendar days at the same time.

The first phase of the project, including research, development of the first calibre, studies to design the case, and production of the first series, was financed by a sum of approximately 500,000 Swiss francs raised amongst friends and private investors. The objective now is to raise 1 Million Swiss Francs through a Crowd Funding Equity Campaign aimed at watch lovers. From now on, anyone can become an investor in Czapek & Cie and contribute to its development.

The company founders chose Raizers, the first European crowd investing platform. It favours enterprises that meet very strict eligibility criteria, innovative businesses, or ones that are growing vigorously and are led by professional teams. A second platform in the UK will be confirmed soon. Czapek &Cie is headquartered in Geneva.
