Cuervo y Sobrinos Vuelo Emilio Carranza Series

By introducing three new timepieces from its Vuelo collection, Swiss luxury watch brand Cuervo y Sobrinos pays tribute to the legendary Mexican aviator, Emilio Carranza.

The new Emilio Carranza edition from the Cuervo y Sobrinos Vuelo series consists of three references boasting a vintage pilot watch theme.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Vuelo Emilio Carranza Series

Emilio Carranza

Emilio Carranza was born in 1905. He was one of the most respected aviation pioneers from the early 20th century. He carried out many successful flying missions, including a record-breaking flight from Mexico to New York City in 1928.

In 1926, Carranza participated in the “National Air Race” in Mexico City, where he won first place in the “Cabin Planes” category. This victory earned him national recognition and led to his appointment as the chief pilot of the Mexican military’s aviation division.

In the first transnational flight between the United States and Mexico in 1927, he flew 1,575 miles (3000 km) from San Diego, California to Mexico City in 18.5 hours. In 1928, Emilio Carranza died in a plane crash while returning from a goodwill mission.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Vuelo Emilio Carranza Series

The new Vuelo Emilio Carranza watch collection by Cuervo y Sobrinos pays tribute to this brave aviator and his love of flying. Moreover, this series draws inspiration from the aviation instruments of the 1920s and selected vintage-inspired shades and materials that would have been familiar to Emilio during his time in the air.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Vuelo Emilio Carranza Automatic

These automatic wristwatches feature a striking black dial with luminescent hands, which offers exceptional legibility both day and night a plane illustration on the dial. In addition, the Emilio Carranza portrait has also been engraved on the back case.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Gran Premio de Cuba “1957” Limited Edition

With this limited edition watch series, Cuervo y Sobrinos takes us back to 1957, a time when Cuba hosted the action-packed Cuban Grand Prix. Limited to 162 pieces, the Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Gran Premio de Cuba “1957” chronograph takes inspiration from the historical race, but crafted with modern day specifications.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Gran Premio de Cuba “1957” Limited Edition

History of Cuban Grand Prix

The inaugural Cuban Grand Prix, the Gran Premio de Cuba was held in 1957. In this race, the famous Argentinean driver Juan Manuel Fangio secured victory in his Maserati 300S. The following year, on the eve of the race, antigovernmental revolutionaries kidnapped Fangio, however, the race still went ahead and Stirling Moss was victorious in his Ferrari 335S.

Unfortunately, the 1959 race was cancelled due to political instability, however, it returned for one last time in 1960, when the British driver, Stirling Moss, was once again, triumphant, albeit this time in a Maserati Tipo 61.

Dial

The vibrant red dial evokes motor racing spirit. The cream hours and minute hands are leaf-shaped, luminescent and plump, while their colour bestows the dial with a bygone charm.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Gran Premio de Cuba “1957” Limited Edition

The central chronograph seconds hand and counter hands are in baton shape. Two chronograph registers, 30 minutes and 12-hours, once again encompass cream hues, while the small seconds display at 9 o’clock has a vivid shade of red.

The bold, cream Arabic numerals offer better clarity. The hour markers are treated with Super-LumiNova, enhancing readability in dim light.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Gran Premio de Cuba “1957” Limited Edition

The red tones of the central dial area are framed with a cream circlet that serves as a telemeter scale. Beyond the telemeter scale is a black ring, hugging the interior of the case which plays host to a tachymeter. This feature allows the wearer to determine the speed of a vehicle over a known distance.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Buceador Caribe ‘Pipin’ Edition

At SIAR 2022 (Salón Internacional Alta Relojería México), Cuervo y Sobrinos unveiled a limited edition diving watch designed in collaboration with Pipin Ferreras, the legendary Cuban free-diver, and friend of the brand. This new addition to the Buceador collection is dressed in green tones and enlivened with black, cream and orange accents.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Buceador Caribe ‘Pipin’ Edition

In 2021, Cuervo y Sobrinos signed a partnership with Pipin Ferreras. Shortly thereafter, Pipin began working with the creative team at Cuervo y Sobrinos, developing a divers’ watch imbued with their shared appreciation of Cuban style.

Already impressed by the brand’s Buceador model, Pipin was keen to use this as the basis for his inaugural collaboration with the Cuban-Swiss company. The CyS Buceador Caribe ‘Pipin’ Edition watch encompasses several design elements that are personal to the legendary free-diver.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Buceador Caribe ‘Pipin’ Edition

Buceador is the Spanish word for ‘diver’, an apt name for a watch inspired by the Caribbean waters encircling the sun-kissed island Pipin calls home. This new version of the brand’s divers’ model shares all the features of the standard model including its highly complex 43mm case, water resistant to 200m. However, this latest model is appointed with a distinctive green dial, enlivened with black, cream and orange accents.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Buceador Caribe ‘Pipin’ Edition

An ingenious pusher system, positioned at 4 o’clock, unlocks the orange-coloured crown at 2 o’clock. The crown is used to adjust the internal rotating bezel, allowing the wearer to monitor their dive time. A silver-toned crown, located at 9 o’ clock, is used to adjust the indications as well as wind the mainspring.

The Buceador Caribe ‘Pipin’ Edition features bold hour and minute hands which engage with highly legible indices. Both the hands and indices are treated with Super-LumiNova, enhancing readability in dim light. A central sweep seconds hand and date display complete the inventory of functions.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Buceador Caribe ‘Pipin’ Edition

The case is composed of both straight and curving lines, while diving tanks and snorkels have provided inspiration for the design of the crowns and the aforementioned pusher.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Buceador Caribe ‘Pipin’ Edition watch case-back

Upholding divers’ watch convention, the Buceador Caribe ‘Pipin’ Edition is fitted with a solid case back. In this instance, it is engraved with the signature of the diving legend anda depiction of a diver swimming underwater, surrounded by a shoal of tropical fish.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Buceador Caribe ‘Pipin’ Edition watch with leather strap

The watch is supplied with two straps, one in green leather and a second executed in orange rubber. Moreover, the watch is presented in a special edition humidor with sections to accommodate the watch and up to two additional straps.

Eight silver spear-shaped and faceted hour markers, along with the Roman numerals at 3, 6 and 9 and the brand logo at noon, are applied to the surface of the dial providing additional depth and volume. At 6 o’clock, there is a recessed small seconds counter with a snailed interior and the word ‘Flameante’. The elegant lance-shaped hands have luminescent coating at their tips.

The vintage-inspired double-curved sapphire crystal front glass ensures excellent dial legibility and showcases the beautiful pattern. The thin bezel offers a generous panorama of the dial.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Flameante British Green

Available in stainless steel, the case of the Historiador Flameante has a diameter of 40 mm and an ultra-thin height of just 6.2 mm. Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Flameante British Green

The CYS Historiador Flameante watch is equipped with the ultra-thin (2.5 mm) Swiss hand-wound movement (base ETA 7001). Visible through the sapphire crystal window on the caseback, the movement is finished to the highest standard of craftsmanship.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Asturias Pequeños Segundos Montegrappa Set

Swiss luxury watch brand Cuervo y Sobrinos has launched a special Historiador Asturias Pequeños Segundos edition with a montegrappa pen as a set. This timepiece is a tribute to the founding members of the company.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Asturias Pequeños Segundos Montegrappa Set

Ramón Fernández Cuervo migrated from his home in Pravia, a town in Asturias in northern Spain, and settled in Cuba. He established a jewellery store in Havana in 1862 and later he invited family members to join him. In 1882, Don Cuervo established a new company with his nephews (sobrinos), the aptly named firm ‘Cuervo y Sobrinos’.

Last year, the brand released the CYS Historiador Asturias watch as a tribute to Ramón and his nephews. Endowed with a sunray dial and offered in a choice of eye-catching hues, it imparts information in a highly legible format. The model has proved incredibly popular, courtesy of its distinctive style, notable quality and impressive value.

Now, building on the success of the Historiador Asturias, Cuervo y Sobrinos has launched a new model, the Historiador Asturias Pequeños Segundos.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Asturias Pequeños Segundos Montegrappa Set

This latest creation eschews the centre seconds and date function found on last year’s model in favour of small seconds display, positioned at 6 o’clock.

The Historiador Asturias Pequeños Segundos is available in two dial variants, blue or ivory. The sunray-motif dial transitions from mid-tones at its centre to deep shades near the perimeter. Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Tradición ‘San Rafael’

Swiss luxury watch brand Cuervo y Sobrinos presents Historiador Tradición ‘San Rafael’, a modern interpretation of a 1950s timepiece named ‘Tradition’.

Following its inception in 1882, Cuervo y Sobrinos enjoyed years of continuous growth. On several occasions it moved to ever-larger premises in order to meet the growing demand for its jewellery and watches. Ultimately, the company moved to a new boutique on Calle San Rafael, a prestigious boulevard in Havana. Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Tradición ‘San Rafael’ series honours this exceptional retail establishment.

During the 1950s, Cuervo y Sobrinos produced a watch named ‘Tradition’. The dial of the Tradition was enlivened with a grid-shaped motif termed ‘frappage’.

Dauphine-style hour and minute hands conversed with circular indexes, save for 3 and 9 o’clock which featured trapezoidal indexes and 12 o’clock which was denoted with Arabic numerals. The central seconds hand was equipped with a bold, red arrow-shaped tip, while two apertures revealed the prevailing day and date.

Examples of the original Tradition watch are highly-prized by collectors who often appreciate the fusion of Latin style and Swiss watchmaking expertise.

Recently, Cuervo y Sobrinos revisited the ‘Tradition’ of the 1950s, eager to capture some of its period charm. The modern-day Historiador Tradición ‘San Rafael’ is offered in two variants, Champagne or silver.

Each dial is adorned with a ‘frappage’ motif and features dauphine-style hands which emulate those found on the original Tradition of the 1950s. Likewise, the prominent central sweep seconds hand, with its ebullient red tip, references the hand found on the original. The watch features circular and trapezoidal indexes to denote the hours.

Unlike the vintage Tradition, this new model eschews Arabic numerals at 12 o’clock in favour of an applied CyS emblem. The company’s name and the word ‘Tradición’ are presented on two prominent cartouches, imbuing the dial with a three-dimensional allure.

Measuring 40mm in diameter, the stainless steel case is optimally sized for a modern-day audience. Consistent with other Historiador models, the lugs feature an ergonomic design, optimising wearer comfort.

The case back is engraved with a depiction of the brand’s former boutique on Calle San Rafael in Havana and the company’s nomenclature in cursive text. In the past, this portrayal of the boutique was used as a seal applied to the brand’s documents.
