Cuervo y Sobrinos Buceador Caribe ‘Pipin’ Edition

At SIAR 2022 (Salón Internacional Alta Relojería México), Cuervo y Sobrinos unveiled a limited edition diving watch designed in collaboration with Pipin Ferreras, the legendary Cuban free-diver, and friend of the brand. This new addition to the Buceador collection is dressed in green tones and enlivened with black, cream and orange accents.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Buceador Caribe ‘Pipin’ Edition

In 2021, Cuervo y Sobrinos signed a partnership with Pipin Ferreras. Shortly thereafter, Pipin began working with the creative team at Cuervo y Sobrinos, developing a divers’ watch imbued with their shared appreciation of Cuban style.

Already impressed by the brand’s Buceador model, Pipin was keen to use this as the basis for his inaugural collaboration with the Cuban-Swiss company. The CyS Buceador Caribe ‘Pipin’ Edition watch encompasses several design elements that are personal to the legendary free-diver.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Buceador Caribe ‘Pipin’ Edition

Buceador is the Spanish word for ‘diver’, an apt name for a watch inspired by the Caribbean waters encircling the sun-kissed island Pipin calls home. This new version of the brand’s divers’ model shares all the features of the standard model including its highly complex 43mm case, water resistant to 200m. However, this latest model is appointed with a distinctive green dial, enlivened with black, cream and orange accents.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Buceador Caribe ‘Pipin’ Edition

An ingenious pusher system, positioned at 4 o’clock, unlocks the orange-coloured crown at 2 o’clock. The crown is used to adjust the internal rotating bezel, allowing the wearer to monitor their dive time. A silver-toned crown, located at 9 o’ clock, is used to adjust the indications as well as wind the mainspring.

The Buceador Caribe ‘Pipin’ Edition features bold hour and minute hands which engage with highly legible indices. Both the hands and indices are treated with Super-LumiNova, enhancing readability in dim light. A central sweep seconds hand and date display complete the inventory of functions.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Buceador Caribe ‘Pipin’ Edition

The case is composed of both straight and curving lines, while diving tanks and snorkels have provided inspiration for the design of the crowns and the aforementioned pusher.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Buceador Caribe ‘Pipin’ Edition watch case-back

Upholding divers’ watch convention, the Buceador Caribe ‘Pipin’ Edition is fitted with a solid case back. In this instance, it is engraved with the signature of the diving legend anda depiction of a diver swimming underwater, surrounded by a shoal of tropical fish.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Buceador Caribe ‘Pipin’ Edition watch with leather strap

The watch is supplied with two straps, one in green leather and a second executed in orange rubber. Moreover, the watch is presented in a special edition humidor with sections to accommodate the watch and up to two additional straps.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Tradición ‘San Rafael’

Swiss luxury watch brand Cuervo y Sobrinos presents Historiador Tradición ‘San Rafael’, a modern interpretation of a 1950s timepiece named ‘Tradition’.

Following its inception in 1882, Cuervo y Sobrinos enjoyed years of continuous growth. On several occasions it moved to ever-larger premises in order to meet the growing demand for its jewellery and watches. Ultimately, the company moved to a new boutique on Calle San Rafael, a prestigious boulevard in Havana. Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Tradición ‘San Rafael’ series honours this exceptional retail establishment.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Tradición ‘San Rafael’

During the 1950s, Cuervo y Sobrinos produced a watch named ‘Tradition’. The dial of the Tradition was enlivened with a grid-shaped motif termed ‘frappage’.

Cuervo y Sobrinos ‘Tradition’ of the 1950s
Cuervo y Sobrinos ‘Tradition’ of the 1950s

Dauphine-style hour and minute hands conversed with circular indexes, save for 3 and 9 o’clock which featured trapezoidal indexes and 12 o’clock which was denoted with Arabic numerals. The central seconds hand was equipped with a bold, red arrow-shaped tip, while two apertures revealed the prevailing day and date.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Tradición ‘San Rafael’

Examples of the original Tradition watch are highly-prized by collectors who often appreciate the fusion of Latin style and Swiss watchmaking expertise.

Recently, Cuervo y Sobrinos revisited the ‘Tradition’ of the 1950s, eager to capture some of its period charm. The modern-day Historiador Tradición ‘San Rafael’ is offered in two variants, Champagne or silver.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Tradición ‘San Rafael’

Each dial is adorned with a ‘frappage’ motif and features dauphine-style hands which emulate those found on the original Tradition of the 1950s. Likewise, the prominent central sweep seconds hand, with its ebullient red tip, references the hand found on the original. The watch features circular and trapezoidal indexes to denote the hours.

Unlike the vintage Tradition, this new model eschews Arabic numerals at 12 o’clock in favour of an applied CyS emblem. The company’s name and the word ‘Tradición’ are presented on two prominent cartouches, imbuing the dial with a three-dimensional allure.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Tradición ‘San Rafael’

Measuring 40mm in diameter, the stainless steel case is optimally sized for a modern-day audience. Consistent with other Historiador models, the lugs feature an ergonomic design, optimising wearer comfort.

The case back is engraved with a depiction of the brand’s former boutique on Calle San Rafael in Havana and the company’s nomenclature in cursive text. In the past, this portrayal of the boutique was used as a seal applied to the brand’s documents.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Tradición ‘San Rafael’

Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Asturias

Cuervo y Sobrinos was founded in 1882 by Cuervo and his nephews. This group of remarkable entrepreneurs and highly skilled goldsmiths originated from Asturias, a region in northwest Spain. The Historiador Asturias honours those courageous emigrants who, in the 19th century, sailed to the Americas in the pursuit of fortune. Cuba proved a popular choice for the intrepid Asturians, eager to discover a new world and make a better life.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Asturias

Asturias is a principality located in northwest Spain. Ramón Fernández Cuervo an immigrant from Pravia, a town in Asturias, established a jewellery store in Havanain 1862. Many of the Asturians were entrepreneurial and some returned to their home in northwest Spain as wealthy individuals, however, Ramon remained in Cuba and when his business was on a sound footing, he invited many of his family members to join him in Havana.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Asturias

Later, in 1882, Don Ramón established a new company with his nephews (sobrinos), the aptly named ‘Cuervo y Sobrinos’. The extraordinary business acumen of Don Ramón and his family proved instrumental to their success. Over subsequent years, the firm repeatedly moved to larger premises and also became a jewellery wholesaler. The company was held in high esteem. Indeed, several watch brands chose to apply the retailer’s name to their products. Such companies included Longines, Patek Philippe and Rolex.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Asturias

During the 1920s, Cuervo y Sobrinos opened offices in Paris and Pforzheim. In 1928, the company also opened a watch workshop in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. Over the years, Cuervo y Sobrinos has witnessed much change, but its success can be traced back to one man, Cuervo, an immigrant from Asturias.

The Historiador Asturias watch collection honours the Cuervo family birthplace. These new watches join the Historiador collection, a range of classical models that celebrate the history and traditions of Cuba.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Asturias

History has always been at the heart of the Cuervo y Sobrinos brand. In 2009, Cuervo y Sobrinos reopened its Havana boutique. Dr Eusebio Leal Spengler, Havana’s official Historian, proved instrumental to the restoration of the boutique as well as many other glorious buildings within the capital city.

Cuervo y Sobrinos chose to recognise Dr Leal’s contribution to Havana’s architectural renaissance by naming its classical collection of watches Historiador (Historian).

Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Asturias

The Historiador Asturias perpetuates the company’s passion for history. Offered in four variants, each option features a dial that exhibits a slightly mysterious, smoky appearance. The dial transitions from mid-tones at its centre to deep shades near the perimeter. Prospective wearers can choose from one of four dial colours, namely, Agua Blue, British Green, Negroni Red or Tropical Tobacco.

The new Asturias models have a price of approximately € 2000 (retail), a figure which reflects the company’s recent strategic decision to reposition itself more aggressively within the € 2000 and € 3000 (retail) price segment.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Asturias

Graceful Lozangé-style hands collaborate with applied baton-style indexes, presenting the prevailing time in a highly intelligible format. A rectangular date aperture, positioned at 6 o’clock, reveals white numerals atop a black disc. Other details include a lithe central seconds hand and an applied CyS emblem positioned at 12 o’clock.

Cuervo y Sobrinos has equipped the Historiador Asturias with the CyS 5104 calibre, an automatic Swiss movement based on the Peseaux 224. The oscillating weight is decorated with Côtes de Genève and features the brand’s emblem.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Asturias

When designing the Historiador Asturias, Cuervo y Sobrinos delved into its vast archives and took inspiration from some of its former models produced in the 1940s. The resultant case design echoes the styling of this era, but also subscribes to modern tastes with its generous diameter of 40mm.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Asturias

The steel case is highly polished, accentuating its gently arcing contours. The elongated lugs project from the case, resulting in the watch sitting squarely and comfortably upon the wrist. The model features a double curved sapphire crystal enticing light to flood the dial surface, thereby augmenting readability.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Asturias

The Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Asturias celebrates Cuervo, the founder of the company, his nephews and the many citizens from Asturias who chose to make Cuba their home. Collectively, these individuals have enriched Cuban society and helped make it what it is today.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador 1519

Swiss luxury watch brand Cuervo y Sobrinos celebrates its birthplace, Havana, with the release of the new Historiador 1519.

The history of Cuervo y Sobrinos is intertwined with that of Cuba. The watch brand chose the name ‘Historiador’ in recognition of Dr Eusebio Leal Spengler, Havana’s official Historian, demonstrating the importance the watch firm places on history and traditions.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador 1519

Established in 1882, Cuervo y Sobrinos began life on Calle de la Amistad in the heart of Havana. As the firm enjoyed increasing prosperity, it moved to larger premises and also established offices in Europe. However, while Cuervo y Sobrinos has witnessed change over the years, it has always remained inextricably linked to Havana, a city that was founded in 1519.

Originally called San Cristóbal de La Habana, the city is known for its cornflower blue skies, the rich aroma of Cuban cigars and the hypnotic sounds of Latin music. Havana is the spiritual home of Cuervo y Sobrinos and for this reason the company has chosen to celebrate the year the city was born with the release of the Historiador 1519.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador 1519

Classical Breguet-style hands converse with applied faceted indexes, conveying the hours and minutes in highly lucid form. The baton-type central seconds hand and date complete the inventory of functions. Everything is clear and succinct and no information is superfluous.

The central area of the dial is enlivened with a guilloché motif, presented in art deco style, imbuing the dial’s surface with a bewitching, sumptuous texture. The ‘Key of the New World’ is part of Cuba’s coat of arms and has been depicted beneath the fulcrum of the dial. Cuervo y Sobrinos has also adorned the movement’s oscillating weight with the three castles that feature on Havana’s flag.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador 1519

The dial encompasses numerous tasteful details, each enriching the overall appearance. For example, the minute track is presented on a fluted circlet, while an applied CyS emblem, incorporating shades of gold and red, is positioned at noon.

Cuervo y Sobrinos has equipped the Historiador 1519 with the CYS 5104 calibre, an automatic Swiss movement based on the Peseaux 224. The movement is decorated with Côtes de Genève and perlage.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador 1519

When designing the Historiador 1519, Cuervo y Sobrinos delved into its vast archives and took inspiration from some of its former models produced in the 1940s. The resultant case design echoes the styling of this era, but subscribes to modern tastes with its generous diameter of 40mm.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador 1519

The steel case is highly polished, accentuating its gently arcing contours. The elongated lugs project from the case, causing the watch to sit squarely upon the wrist, thereby delivering impressive levels of wearer comfort. The model features a double curved sapphire crystal enticing light to flood the dial surface, augmenting readability.

The Historiador 1519 is available in three dial variants, including dark blue, silver with a blue circlet and silver with a brown circlet. All models are presented on a high-gloss Louisiana alligator strap.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Announces Partnership with Cuban Free Diver Francisco ‘Pipin’ Ferreras

Swiss luxury watch brand Cuervo y Sobrinos has announced a new partnership with legendary free-diver Francisco ‘Pipin’ Ferreras, the free-diving and spear-fishing specialist.

This news follows the successful launch of the Buceador Caribe, a range of masculine divers’ watches featuring an impressive water resistance of 200m. Each of these models celebrates Cuba’s aquatic world where cyan coloured seas, pastel sands and black corals coexist.

Cuban Free Diver Francisco ‘Pipin’ Ferreras

Pipin was born in Matanzas in Cuba and is clearly very aware of the region’s notable aquatic charms. He began diving at just 8 years of age, descending 4 or 5 metres without the aid of bottled air. Furthermore, at the tender age of 12, he would go spear-fishing, submerging over 15 metres and spending prolonged periods underwater. Clearly, he had an innate capacity to dive.

Ultimately, Pipin embarked on a career in free diving and established his first world record, aged just 27. This impressive achievement was merely a foretaste of what was to come. Indeed, throughout his career, Pipin has repeatedly enjoyed the sweet taste of success, having set more than 40 world records, albeit based on his track record, this tally may well increase.

Cuban Free Diver Francisco ‘Pipin’ Ferreras

He has toured the globe in his role as an underwater producer and photographer, swimming in virtually all of the world’s seas. However, despite travelling extensively, he remains a firm fan of Cuba’s warm waters and diverse marine life.

Massimo Rossi, CEO of Cuervo y Sobrinos, explains, “Our company was established in Havana, Cuba and since its foundation in 1882, it has always celebrated Latin culture and the nation’s love of life. Today, our watches are made in Switzerland, but our love for Cuba has never faltered. Each of our models tells a different story, celebrating the company’s captivating history while remaining relevant to the present and beyond.

“We were attracted to Pipin for a number of reasons. He epitomises the Cuban spirit, demonstrates a thirst for adventure and is incredibly courageous. Indeed, both parties to this agreement share the same mindset and a love for Cuba.”

However, the partnership between Cuervo y Sobrinos and Pipin Ferreras extends beyond mere marketing. Pipin will contribute to the technical specification of future divers’ models, highlighting potential technical improvements and testing them under the most adverse, ‘real world’ conditions. In addition, Pipin will be working closely with Cuervo y Sobrinos helping to create a new watch that will deliver excellent underwater performance, but with a high quotient of style.

This new partnership perfectly illustrates the watch company’s desire to engage with new audiences. It comes on the back of the firm’s partnerships with CWSC and Scott Jacobs. Furthermore, it represents a taste of what’s to come as the brand intends to announce additional partnerships in the near future.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Robusto Churchill ‘Sir Winston’ Limited Edition

Churchill first visited Cuba in 1895 aged just 21. As young officer in the 4th Hussars, based in London, he was keen to take part in military action. He decided to join the Spanish Army and fight against Cuban forces in what became known as the ‘Cuban War of Independence’ (1895 – 1898). Having trekked to Arroyo Blanco, some 400km east of Havana, he faced enemy fire. His first taste of Cuba lasted only a few weeks, but it would not be the last time that he would visit the sun-kissed Caribbean island.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Robusto Churchill ‘Sir Winston’ Limited Edition

In the early part of 1946, clearly exhausted after undertaking his onerous role in the Second World War, Churchill travelled across the Atlantic Ocean at the invitation of President Truman. He lobbied America for a reconstruction loan for his home nation and made a series of speeches, but he also spent time seeing old friends, painting and swimming. Most notably, he took the opportunity to visit Cuba for a second time, albeit on this occasion as an elder statesman.

President Truman offered Churchill the use of a US plane, something he accepted. He travelled with his wife, Clementine, from Florida to Havana and stayed at the prestigious Hotel Nacional. While on the island, he visited the Cuervo y Sobrinos boutique.

It is obvious that many Cubans were delighted to see Churchill during his time on the island. Likewise, Churchill seemed to enjoy his time in Cuba, especially when smoking his favourite Havana cigars. Indeed, when the former Prime Minister received a gift of 500 Romeo y Julieta cigars, his favourite brand of cigars, he was reportedly delighted. The name Robusto is used to describe a short and ‘robust’ cigar, making it an apt moniker for this new Churchill-inspired, limited-edition model.

CUERVO Y SOBRINOS

Cuervo y Sobrinos is a Swiss luxury watch brand that proudly boasts its historic connection with Latin creativity. Cuervo y Sobrinos was established in 1882 in Havana.

Founded by the Spanish in the 16th century, Havana, the capital city of Cuba has been known Latin glamour, hedonism, luxury, cigar smoke filled casinos, elegance and exoticism. In 1862, Ramon Fernandos Cuervo, an immigrant from northern Spain, founded a jewellery store Calle de la Amistad in Havana.

The Cuervo family started by importing Swiss watches before developing their own Swiss made collection which became must have stylish timepieces. Many famous people of the 20th century visited the Cuervo y Sobrinos Havana boutique including Hemingway, Churchill, Pablo Neruda, Einstein and Caruso.

Armando Rio y Cuervo and his brothers ran their jewelry and watchmaking business founded by their uncle Ramon which is why the brand has Sobrinos (nephews) in the name. The boutique known as ‘La Casa’ was on the prestigious Avenida Quinta.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Vintage Boutique

The company prospered and in a short time, “La Casa” became the jeweler and watch shop in the Cuban capital. Its reputation crossed borders and the name became known in Europe and North America. In order to satisfy the growing demand and ensure consistent quality three sites were opened in Europe. First one in Pforzheim, Germany, where the precious stones were selected and next in Rue Melzy, Paris where the stones were cut and polished. Lastly, a production facility was opened at La Chaux-de-Fonds, the cradle of Swiss watchmaking.

The brand became known for representing a unique and glamorous Latin lifestyle and the Cuervo y Sobrinos sales reached their peak at the end of the 50’s. Due to a changing political situation part of the Cuervo family left and the brand lay dormant till it was bought by Europeans in the early 2000’s.

The brand was relaunched in the early 2000’s and collectors continued showing interest in the Swiss made brand with a Latin soul. In 2018, Cuervo y Sobrinos came under new ownership with shareholders and the management team having a wealth of experience in the watchmaking industry. The brand’s current CEO is Massimo Rossi .

As the Managing Director, Massimo Rossi had been in charge of the brand’s successful development from 2004-2014 and knows the international watch market inside out. In Sep 2008, he was appointed as CEO of the brand.

The brand’s Creative Director is Mario Girardi, who has a truly solid background in the watchmaking industry. All partners share the same passion for quality watchmaking. Their vision is to develop a dynamic and innovative brand that stands for Latin heritage, creativity and luxury. Watches will always remain the core business.

CUERVO Y SOBRINOS headquarters and atelier

The headquarters and atelier are still located on the shore of the Capolago Lake in the canton of Ticino.

The key values running though the brand are tradition, quality, joie de vivre, and exoticism. The value of tradition can be traced back to 1882, the year the brand was established. The products are ‘Swiss made’ which is a guarantee of the highest quality when it comes to watchmaking. The design philosophy is to combine elegance and Latin creativity to communicate a certain joie de vivre, hedonism and exoticism.

This is very much part of the unique heritage which can be traced back to the city’s glorious past, when the Cuban capital was the center of an extraordinary international social scene that was elegant, refined and glamorous. These values associated with Swiss savoir-faire give Cuervo y Sobrinos a unique and inimitable positioning that gives it the tagline ‘Swiss manufacture, Latin Heritage’.

The highly skilled designers get their inspiration from models in collections around the world or from the brand’s extensive archives. The original spirit of the brand is very much inspired by Art Deco, a combination of refined details and discreet elegance. Different experts are brought together under one roof in Le Noirmont and they look after all the stages from design to assembly. Cuervo y Sobrinos keeps abreast of all the latest technological breakthroughs ensuring clients have the most reliable and technologically advanced products.

Since the early 2000’s Cuervo has successfully positioned itself as the new vintage watch brand. The historical models the Esplendido, Prominente and Historiador have been created in the spirit of the brand driven by an Art Deco aesthetic that is elegant, discrete and yet stylish. Besides the historical collections Cuervo y Sobrinos proposes contemporary and innovative timepieces like the Vuelo and the Pirata.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Luna Negra & Historiador Doble Luna

Cuervo y Sobrinos unveils two new Historiador models, each providing a different perspective of the moon yet sharing many elements in common.

In the Southern Hemisphere, the moon appears upside down with its sunlit side opposite to how it appears in the Northern Hemisphere. The new Historiador Luna Negra is intended for use in the Northern Hemisphere, while the Historiador Doble Luna is suitable for all geographic locations.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Luna Negra

The Historiador Luna Negra is offered with a choice of anthracite or sand-coloured dials and features colour-coordinated hands and indexes. The moon-phase is shown via a large crescent-shaped aperture, designed to show the age of the moon as viewed within the Northern Hemisphere.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Luna Negra

Another key difference with this model is that some areas of the dial are open-worked; revealing an array of movement parts normally hidden from view.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Luna Negra

The model also displays the date, day, month and includes a central sweep seconds hand.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Luna Negra

Two versions of the Historiador Doble Luna are available, each endowed with a blue dial. This model simultaneously shows the age of the moon in both the Northern Hemisphere and Southern Hemisphere. However, this model’s list of functions is not limited just to its stylish moonphase indications.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Doble Luna

Colour-coordinated Breguet hour and minute hands float above a sea of blue Clous de Paris guilloche, interacting with diamond-shaped indexes and elongated Roman numerals.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Doble Luna

A hand, endowed with a red crescent-shaped tip, circumnavigates the dial, pointing to the prevailing date. A brushed steel circlet occupies the central area of the dial and features two apertures, one revealing the day and a second disclosing the month. The brand’s name adorns the upper section of the brushed circlet. A central sweep seconds hand completes the inventory of functions.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Doble Luna

Both the Historiador Luna Negra and the Historiador Doble Luna are housed in a 40mm highly polished stainless steel. The style of the case bears a close resemblance to a former design seen on one of the Maison’s vintage models, circa 1946. This case features an ergonomic lug design.

The automatic Calibre CYS 6331 incorporates a colored and decorated oscillating weight.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Flameante New Model with Salmon “Flameante” Dial

Cuervo y Sobrinos presents a new edition of its classic Historiador Flameante timepiece with a fascinating salmon dial. Inspired by an original model produced by Cuervo y Sobrinos in the 1950s, the latest Historiador Flameante flaunts an ultra-slim, vintage-style case and an original salmon ‘flameante’ or ‘flaming’ dial.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Flameante (New Model with Salmon “Flameante” Dial)

Made with stainless steel, the case of the Historiador Flameante has a diameter of 40 mm and an ultra-thin height of just 6.2 mm, a perfectly proportioned dress watch that will glide discreetly under a shirt cuff.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Flameante (New Model with Salmon “Flameante” Dial)

Inspired by the tailfins of American cars popular in Havana in the 1950s, the bold jutting legs are ergonomically designed and extremely comfortable on the wrist. Modest yet easy to manipulate, the crown sits close to the caseband, and the thin bezel offers a generous panorama of the dial.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Flameante (New Model with Salmon “Flameante” Dial)

The swirling guilloché flame motif engraved on the dial reveals the brand’s devotion to craftsmanship. The dancing flames emanating from the centre endow the dial with a fluid, mesmerising spectacle. Evocative of the sunsets over the Bay of Havana, the elegant salmon dial provides a marked contrast with the polished case.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Flameante (New Model with Salmon “Flameante” Dial)

Eight silver spear-shaped and faceted markers, along with Arabic numerals at 3, 6 and 9 and the brand logo at noon, are applied to the surface of the dial providing additional dimension and volume. Animating the dial at 6 o’clock is the recessed small seconds counter with a snailed interior and the word ‘Flameante’.

To consolidate the vintage identity of the watch, a double-curved sapphire crystal protects the dial. Not only is it a historically accurate feature of watches from the 1950s, but it also allows light to flood the dial plane enhancing legibility and showcasing the beautiful pattern. In tune with contemporary standards, the elegant lance-shaped hands have a touch of luminescence at their tips to consult the time in low light conditions.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Flameante (New Model with Salmon “Flameante” Dial)

The Historiador Flameante houses an ultra-thin (2.5 mm) Swiss hand-wound movement. Visible through the sapphire crystal window on the caseback, the finishes pay homage to traditional watchmaking: the bridges are decorated with Côtes de Genève, the main plate is embellished with circular graining, and there is a profusion of blued screws. The caseback is engraved with ‘Testimony of Style since 1882’, a reference to the foundation of the Cuervo y Sobrinos brand.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Señora Sol y Estrellas

Swiss luxury watch brand Cuervo y Sobrinos presents Señora Sol y Estrellas, a new lady’s watch inspired by the natural beauty and lifestyle of Cuba. The Señora Sol y Estrellas refers to the sun and stars which look down on Havana’s inhabitants. The model was designed by female watch designer, Annick Woungly, who was born in Havana, close to Cuervo y Sobrinos’s inaugural boutique.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Señora Sol y Estrellas watch blue dial

With the advent of the Señora Sol y Estrellas, Annick has sought to reference the clear skies of Cuba and capture the vibrant hues synonymous with life on this idyllic Caribbean island. The Señora Sol y Estrellas is available in a selection of dial colours and is offered with a coordinating Palmelatto strap or a refined steel bracelet.

Annick Woungly
Annick Woungly

Annick Woungly, a female watch designer, was born in Havana, close to San Rafael Avenue where Cuervo y Sobrinos opened its first boutique in 1882. Today, she lives in the Jura, close to the Swiss Manufacture. One day a friend told her about a Swiss watch firm with Cuban heritage and she wanted to know more, culminating in her making contact with Massimo Rossi, the CEO of Cuervo y Sobrinos.

The meeting of both parties was fortuitous as Massimo wanted to create a new lady’s watch designed by a female designer. Moreover, like Cuervo y Sobrinos, Annick has a deep understanding of both Cuban culture and Swiss watchmaking. The synergies were clear to see.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Señora Sol y Estrellas

The Señora Sol y Estrellas is offered in four dial variants, some more vibrant than others. Each version features a depiction of the sun at the centre of the dial, a reference to the orange orbe in the sky that influences life on the Caribbean island.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Señora Sol y Estrellas

A series of shimmering stars encircle the sun, representing the transition from day to night. The outer row of stars, formed of full cut diamonds, serve as indices, denoting each hour. The curvaceous leaf-shaped hands impart information lucidly, making the watch a very practical ownership proposition.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Señora Sol y Estrellas

Measuring 34mm in diameter, with a modest height of 7.1mm, the Señora Sol y Estrellas sits neatly upon the wrist while simultaneously granting an imposing presence on the wearer’s arm. The stainless-steel case is paired with an elegant double curved sapphire crystal, a successful combination employed on other Cuervo y Sobrinos models. A Swiss quartz movement delivers high-precision with minimal user-input, making it ideal for busy professional women.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Señora Sol y Estrellas

The four dial options replicate different scenes, typical of life in Cuba. The midnight blue mother-of-pearl dial is inspired by the clear, night sky, whereas the white mother-of-pearl dial references the brilliant daylight that energises Havana’s citizens.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Señora Sol y Estrellas

A red and yellow dial recreates the appearance of the burning sun, while the green and blue dial imitates the reflections of the Caribbean Sea, basking beneath the sun. The Señora Sol y Estrellas is available on a Palmelatto strap or a stainless steel bracelet.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Señora Caramelo

The Señora Caramelo watch by Cuervo y Sobrinos embraces some of the lively colours capturing the exotic character of Cuban life.

“Caramelo” is the Spanish translation of candy. This model, inspired by a historic Cuervo y Sobrinos watch of the 1950s, is available in a choice of vibrant colourways including, blue, green, orange, red and yellow.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Señora Caramelo watch with blue dial

Vintage-style hour and minute hands infuse the dial with a touch of nostalgia. Neat hour markers tastefully augment readability, while a central sweep seconds hand engages with two, rectangular chemins de fer. Cuervo y Sobrinos repeatedly demonstrates an impressive attention to detail, even ensuring the date display is presented in the same shade as the main dial. At the centre of the dial is a series of vertically-aligned stripes, while an applied CyS sits below noon.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Señora Caramelo watch green dial

The case of the Señora Caramelo encompasses both gentle curves and straight lines which wonderfully engage with the light. The sides of the case are stepped, a characteristic which is obvious when viewed from the front. However, when viewed from the side, the smooth curving profile of the case comes to the fore. The sapphire crystal echoes the shape of the caseband and invites ambient light to flood the dial plane, enhancing legibility.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Señora Caramelo watch orange dial

Housed within the handsome case of the Señora Caramelo is the CYS 5102 calibre. This Swiss automatic movement proves highly convenient, eliminating the need for the wearer to wind the watch, except when it has been left unworn for extended periods. The rotor is embellished with a fan decoration and CyS engraving.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Señora Caramelo watch red dial

Each version of the Señora Caramelo is supplied on a matching leather strap, paired with a stainless-steel folding buckle. Consistent with the elegant styling of the watch, the strap neatly integrates into the case.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Robusto Churchill “Yalta Edition”

In 2020, Swiss luxury watch brand Cuervo y Sobrinos created a limited-edition model, the Robusto Churchill, to mark the 75th anniversary of the Yalta conference and, in particular, the close relationship between two great nations, the UK and the US. The Robusto Churchill features a guilloché dial, innovative crown design, 3-part modular case construction and a Swiss automatic movement. Limited to just 500 pieces, scarcity is assured.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Robusto Churchill “Yalta Edition”

In February 1945, Churchill, Roosevelt and Stalin met near Yalta in Crimea. Over a number of days, the three leaders, often termed the ‘Big Three’, discussed the future of a post-war Europe. It was agreed that post-war Germany would be demilitarised and divided into four post-war occupation zones controlled by France, the UK, the US and the Soviet Union.

A consequence of the conference was that some borders would eventually be redrawn. Moreover, the citizens of some nation states would ultimately benefit from free elections and self-determination while, sadly, others would be denied such democratic privileges. It is now the 75th anniversary of the Yalta conference and the world is now a very different place.

The Swiss Manufacture with Cuban heritage, celebrates this momentous period in 20th century history with the release of a new limited-edition watch, the Robusto Churchill.
