Cuervo y Sobrinos Announces Partnership with Cuban Free Diver Francisco ‘Pipin’ Ferreras

Swiss luxury watch brand Cuervo y Sobrinos has announced a new partnership with legendary free-diver Francisco ‘Pipin’ Ferreras, the free-diving and spear-fishing specialist.

This news follows the successful launch of the Buceador Caribe, a range of masculine divers’ watches featuring an impressive water resistance of 200m. Each of these models celebrates Cuba’s aquatic world where cyan coloured seas, pastel sands and black corals coexist.

Cuban Free Diver Francisco ‘Pipin’ Ferreras

Pipin was born in Matanzas in Cuba and is clearly very aware of the region’s notable aquatic charms. He began diving at just 8 years of age, descending 4 or 5 metres without the aid of bottled air. Furthermore, at the tender age of 12, he would go spear-fishing, submerging over 15 metres and spending prolonged periods underwater. Clearly, he had an innate capacity to dive.

Ultimately, Pipin embarked on a career in free diving and established his first world record, aged just 27. This impressive achievement was merely a foretaste of what was to come. Indeed, throughout his career, Pipin has repeatedly enjoyed the sweet taste of success, having set more than 40 world records, albeit based on his track record, this tally may well increase.

Cuban Free Diver Francisco ‘Pipin’ Ferreras

He has toured the globe in his role as an underwater producer and photographer, swimming in virtually all of the world’s seas. However, despite travelling extensively, he remains a firm fan of Cuba’s warm waters and diverse marine life.

Massimo Rossi, CEO of Cuervo y Sobrinos, explains, “Our company was established in Havana, Cuba and since its foundation in 1882, it has always celebrated Latin culture and the nation’s love of life. Today, our watches are made in Switzerland, but our love for Cuba has never faltered. Each of our models tells a different story, celebrating the company’s captivating history while remaining relevant to the present and beyond.

“We were attracted to Pipin for a number of reasons. He epitomises the Cuban spirit, demonstrates a thirst for adventure and is incredibly courageous. Indeed, both parties to this agreement share the same mindset and a love for Cuba.”

However, the partnership between Cuervo y Sobrinos and Pipin Ferreras extends beyond mere marketing. Pipin will contribute to the technical specification of future divers’ models, highlighting potential technical improvements and testing them under the most adverse, ‘real world’ conditions. In addition, Pipin will be working closely with Cuervo y Sobrinos helping to create a new watch that will deliver excellent underwater performance, but with a high quotient of style.

This new partnership perfectly illustrates the watch company’s desire to engage with new audiences. It comes on the back of the firm’s partnerships with CWSC and Scott Jacobs. Furthermore, it represents a taste of what’s to come as the brand intends to announce additional partnerships in the near future.

Scott Jacobs, the celebrated American artist, has a passion for vintage motorcycles and is widely known for painting Harley Davidson motorcycles, including the pre-war EL Knucklehead.

The Knucklehead was produced from 1936 – 1947, however, it is the pre-war examples which are the most desirable, coveted by legions of Harley-Davidson enthusiasts. Scott met two such enthusiasts who shared his passion for the iconic American brand, Patrick and Cris Simmons.

They owned a 1939 Knucklehead Bobber. While this motorcycle differed from its original factory specification, its vivid blue and yellow paint job, ‘bobbed fenders and knobby tyres’ attracted many admiring glances.

The dial of the Espléndidos Scott Jacobs watch has provided the American artist with a horological canvas for expressing his creativity. Initially, Scott produced an original artwork in full size. Thereafter, this artwork was replicated in miniature form using a special 4-colour laser printing technique.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Robusto Churchill ‘Sir Winston’ Limited Edition

Churchill first visited Cuba in 1895 aged just 21. As young officer in the 4th Hussars, based in London, he was keen to take part in military action. He decided to join the Spanish Army and fight against Cuban forces in what became known as the ‘Cuban War of Independence’ (1895 – 1898). Having trekked to Arroyo Blanco, some 400km east of Havana, he faced enemy fire. His first taste of Cuba lasted only a few weeks, but it would not be the last time that he would visit the sun-kissed Caribbean island.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Robusto Churchill ‘Sir Winston’ Limited Edition

In the early part of 1946, clearly exhausted after undertaking his onerous role in the Second World War, Churchill travelled across the Atlantic Ocean at the invitation of President Truman. He lobbied America for a reconstruction loan for his home nation and made a series of speeches, but he also spent time seeing old friends, painting and swimming. Most notably, he took the opportunity to visit Cuba for a second time, albeit on this occasion as an elder statesman.

President Truman offered Churchill the use of a US plane, something he accepted. He travelled with his wife, Clementine, from Florida to Havana and stayed at the prestigious Hotel Nacional. While on the island, he visited the Cuervo y Sobrinos boutique.

It is obvious that many Cubans were delighted to see Churchill during his time on the island. Likewise, Churchill seemed to enjoy his time in Cuba, especially when smoking his favourite Havana cigars. Indeed, when the former Prime Minister received a gift of 500 Romeo y Julieta cigars, his favourite brand of cigars, he was reportedly delighted. The name Robusto is used to describe a short and ‘robust’ cigar, making it an apt moniker for this new Churchill-inspired, limited-edition model.

CUERVO Y SOBRINOS

Cuervo y Sobrinos is a Swiss luxury watch brand that proudly boasts its historic connection with Latin creativity. Cuervo y Sobrinos was established in 1882 in Havana.

Founded by the Spanish in the 16th century, Havana, the capital city of Cuba has been known Latin glamour, hedonism, luxury, cigar smoke filled casinos, elegance and exoticism. In 1862, Ramon Fernandos Cuervo, an immigrant from northern Spain, founded a jewellery store Calle de la Amistad in Havana.

The Cuervo family started by importing Swiss watches before developing their own Swiss made collection which became must have stylish timepieces. Many famous people of the 20th century visited the Cuervo y Sobrinos Havana boutique including Hemingway, Churchill, Pablo Neruda, Einstein and Caruso.

Armando Rio y Cuervo and his brothers ran their jewelry and watchmaking business founded by their uncle Ramon which is why the brand has Sobrinos (nephews) in the name. The boutique known as ‘La Casa’ was on the prestigious Avenida Quinta.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Vintage Boutique

The company prospered and in a short time, “La Casa” became the jeweler and watch shop in the Cuban capital. Its reputation crossed borders and the name became known in Europe and North America. In order to satisfy the growing demand and ensure consistent quality three sites were opened in Europe. First one in Pforzheim, Germany, where the precious stones were selected and next in Rue Melzy, Paris where the stones were cut and polished. Lastly, a production facility was opened at La Chaux-de-Fonds, the cradle of Swiss watchmaking.

The brand became known for representing a unique and glamorous Latin lifestyle and the Cuervo y Sobrinos sales reached their peak at the end of the 50’s. Due to a changing political situation part of the Cuervo family left and the brand lay dormant till it was bought by Europeans in the early 2000’s.

The brand was relaunched in the early 2000’s and collectors continued showing interest in the Swiss made brand with a Latin soul. In 2018, Cuervo y Sobrinos came under new ownership with shareholders and the management team having a wealth of experience in the watchmaking industry. The brand’s current CEO is Massimo Rossi .

As the Managing Director, Massimo Rossi had been in charge of the brand’s successful development from 2004-2014 and knows the international watch market inside out. In Sep 2008, he was appointed as CEO of the brand.

The brand’s Creative Director is Mario Girardi, who has a truly solid background in the watchmaking industry. All partners share the same passion for quality watchmaking. Their vision is to develop a dynamic and innovative brand that stands for Latin heritage, creativity and luxury. Watches will always remain the core business.

CUERVO Y SOBRINOS headquarters and atelier

The headquarters and atelier are still located on the shore of the Capolago Lake in the canton of Ticino.

The key values running though the brand are tradition, quality, joie de vivre, and exoticism. The value of tradition can be traced back to 1882, the year the brand was established. The products are ‘Swiss made’ which is a guarantee of the highest quality when it comes to watchmaking. The design philosophy is to combine elegance and Latin creativity to communicate a certain joie de vivre, hedonism and exoticism.

This is very much part of the unique heritage which can be traced back to the city’s glorious past, when the Cuban capital was the center of an extraordinary international social scene that was elegant, refined and glamorous. These values associated with Swiss savoir-faire give Cuervo y Sobrinos a unique and inimitable positioning that gives it the tagline ‘Swiss manufacture, Latin Heritage’.

The highly skilled designers get their inspiration from models in collections around the world or from the brand’s extensive archives. The original spirit of the brand is very much inspired by Art Deco, a combination of refined details and discreet elegance. Different experts are brought together under one roof in Le Noirmont and they look after all the stages from design to assembly. Cuervo y Sobrinos keeps abreast of all the latest technological breakthroughs ensuring clients have the most reliable and technologically advanced products.

Since the early 2000’s Cuervo has successfully positioned itself as the new vintage watch brand. The historical models the Esplendido, Prominente and Historiador have been created in the spirit of the brand driven by an Art Deco aesthetic that is elegant, discrete and yet stylish. Besides the historical collections Cuervo y Sobrinos proposes contemporary and innovative timepieces like the Vuelo and the Pirata.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Luna Negra & Historiador Doble Luna

Cuervo y Sobrinos unveils two new Historiador models, each providing a different perspective of the moon yet sharing many elements in common.

In the Southern Hemisphere, the moon appears upside down with its sunlit side opposite to how it appears in the Northern Hemisphere. The new Historiador Luna Negra is intended for use in the Northern Hemisphere, while the Historiador Doble Luna is suitable for all geographic locations.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Luna Negra

The Historiador Luna Negra is offered with a choice of anthracite or sand-coloured dials and features colour-coordinated hands and indexes. The moon-phase is shown via a large crescent-shaped aperture, designed to show the age of the moon as viewed within the Northern Hemisphere.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Luna Negra

Another key difference with this model is that some areas of the dial are open-worked; revealing an array of movement parts normally hidden from view.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Luna Negra

The model also displays the date, day, month and includes a central sweep seconds hand.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Luna Negra

Two versions of the Historiador Doble Luna are available, each endowed with a blue dial. This model simultaneously shows the age of the moon in both the Northern Hemisphere and Southern Hemisphere. However, this model’s list of functions is not limited just to its stylish moonphase indications.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Doble Luna

Colour-coordinated Breguet hour and minute hands float above a sea of blue Clous de Paris guilloche, interacting with diamond-shaped indexes and elongated Roman numerals.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Doble Luna

A hand, endowed with a red crescent-shaped tip, circumnavigates the dial, pointing to the prevailing date. A brushed steel circlet occupies the central area of the dial and features two apertures, one revealing the day and a second disclosing the month. The brand’s name adorns the upper section of the brushed circlet. A central sweep seconds hand completes the inventory of functions.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Doble Luna

Both the Historiador Luna Negra and the Historiador Doble Luna are housed in a 40mm highly polished stainless steel. The style of the case bears a close resemblance to a former design seen on one of the Maison’s vintage models, circa 1946. This case features an ergonomic lug design.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Flameante (New Model with Salmon “Flameante” Dial)

Cuervo y Sobrinos presents a new edition of its classic Historiador Flameante timepiece with a fascinating salmon dial. Inspired by an original model produced by Cuervo y Sobrinos in the 1950s, the latest Historiador Flameante flaunts an ultra-slim, vintage-style case and an original salmon ‘flameante’ or ‘flaming’ dial.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Flameante (New Model with Salmon “Flameante” Dial)

Made with stainless steel, the case of the Historiador Flameante has a diameter of 40 mm and an ultra-thin height of just 6.2 mm, a perfectly proportioned dress watch that will glide discreetly under a shirt cuff.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Flameante (New Model with Salmon “Flameante” Dial)

Inspired by the tailfins of American cars popular in Havana in the 1950s, the bold jutting legs are ergonomically designed and extremely comfortable on the wrist. Modest yet easy to manipulate, the crown sits close to the caseband, and the thin bezel offers a generous panorama of the dial.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Flameante (New Model with Salmon “Flameante” Dial)

The swirling guilloché flame motif engraved on the dial reveals the brand’s devotion to craftsmanship. The dancing flames emanating from the centre endow the dial with a fluid, mesmerising spectacle. Evocative of the sunsets over the Bay of Havana, the elegant salmon dial provides a marked contrast with the polished case.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Flameante (New Model with Salmon “Flameante” Dial)

Eight silver spear-shaped and faceted markers, along with Arabic numerals at 3, 6 and 9 and the brand logo at noon, are applied to the surface of the dial providing additional dimension and volume. Animating the dial at 6 o’clock is the recessed small seconds counter with a snailed interior and the word ‘Flameante’.

To consolidate the vintage identity of the watch, a double-curved sapphire crystal protects the dial. Not only is it a historically accurate feature of watches from the 1950s, but it also allows light to flood the dial plane enhancing legibility and showcasing the beautiful pattern. In tune with contemporary standards, the elegant lance-shaped hands have a touch of luminescence at their tips to consult the time in low light conditions.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Flameante (New Model with Salmon “Flameante” Dial)

The Historiador Flameante houses an ultra-thin (2.5 mm) Swiss hand-wound movement. Visible through the sapphire crystal window on the caseback, the finishes pay homage to traditional watchmaking: the bridges are decorated with Côtes de Genève, the main plate is embellished with circular graining, and there is a profusion of blued screws. The caseback is engraved with ‘Testimony of Style since 1882’, a reference to the foundation of the Cuervo y Sobrinos brand.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Señora Sol y Estrellas

Swiss luxury watch brand Cuervo y Sobrinos presents Señora Sol y Estrellas, a new lady’s watch inspired by the natural beauty and lifestyle of Cuba. The Señora Sol y Estrellas refers to the sun and stars which look down on Havana’s inhabitants. The model was designed by female watch designer, Annick Woungly, who was born in Havana, close to Cuervo y Sobrinos’s inaugural boutique.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Señora Sol y Estrellas watch blue dial

With the advent of the Señora Sol y Estrellas, Annick has sought to reference the clear skies of Cuba and capture the vibrant hues synonymous with life on this idyllic Caribbean island. The Señora Sol y Estrellas is available in a selection of dial colours and is offered with a coordinating Palmelatto strap or a refined steel bracelet.

Annick Woungly
Annick Woungly

Annick Woungly, a female watch designer, was born in Havana, close to San Rafael Avenue where Cuervo y Sobrinos opened its first boutique in 1882. Today, she lives in the Jura, close to the Swiss Manufacture. One day a friend told her about a Swiss watch firm with Cuban heritage and she wanted to know more, culminating in her making contact with Massimo Rossi, the CEO of Cuervo y Sobrinos.

The meeting of both parties was fortuitous as Massimo wanted to create a new lady’s watch designed by a female designer. Moreover, like Cuervo y Sobrinos, Annick has a deep understanding of both Cuban culture and Swiss watchmaking. The synergies were clear to see.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Señora Sol y Estrellas

The Señora Sol y Estrellas is offered in four dial variants, some more vibrant than others. Each version features a depiction of the sun at the centre of the dial, a reference to the orange orbe in the sky that influences life on the Caribbean island.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Señora Sol y Estrellas

A series of shimmering stars encircle the sun, representing the transition from day to night. The outer row of stars, formed of full cut diamonds, serve as indices, denoting each hour. The curvaceous leaf-shaped hands impart information lucidly, making the watch a very practical ownership proposition.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Señora Sol y Estrellas

Measuring 34mm in diameter, with a modest height of 7.1mm, the Señora Sol y Estrellas sits neatly upon the wrist while simultaneously granting an imposing presence on the wearer’s arm. The stainless-steel case is paired with an elegant double curved sapphire crystal, a successful combination employed on other Cuervo y Sobrinos models. A Swiss quartz movement delivers high-precision with minimal user-input, making it ideal for busy professional women.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Señora Sol y Estrellas

The four dial options replicate different scenes, typical of life in Cuba. The midnight blue mother-of-pearl dial is inspired by the clear, night sky, whereas the white mother-of-pearl dial references the brilliant daylight that energises Havana’s citizens.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Señora Sol y Estrellas

A red and yellow dial recreates the appearance of the burning sun, while the green and blue dial imitates the reflections of the Caribbean Sea, basking beneath the sun. The Señora Sol y Estrellas is available on a Palmelatto strap or a stainless steel bracelet.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Señora Caramelo

The Señora Caramelo watch by Cuervo y Sobrinos embraces some of the lively colours capturing the exotic character of Cuban life.

“Caramelo” is the Spanish translation of candy. This model, inspired by a historic Cuervo y Sobrinos watch of the 1950s, is available in a choice of vibrant colourways including, blue, green, orange, red and yellow.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Señora Caramelo watch with blue dial

Vintage-style hour and minute hands infuse the dial with a touch of nostalgia. Neat hour markers tastefully augment readability, while a central sweep seconds hand engages with two, rectangular chemins de fer. Cuervo y Sobrinos repeatedly demonstrates an impressive attention to detail, even ensuring the date display is presented in the same shade as the main dial. At the centre of the dial is a series of vertically-aligned stripes, while an applied CyS sits below noon.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Señora Caramelo watch green dial

The case of the Señora Caramelo encompasses both gentle curves and straight lines which wonderfully engage with the light. The sides of the case are stepped, a characteristic which is obvious when viewed from the front. However, when viewed from the side, the smooth curving profile of the case comes to the fore. The sapphire crystal echoes the shape of the caseband and invites ambient light to flood the dial plane, enhancing legibility.

Housed within the handsome case of the Señora Caramelo is the CYS 5102 calibre. This Swiss automatic movement proves highly convenient, eliminating the need for the wearer to wind the watch, except when it has been left unworn for extended periods. The rotor is embellished with a fan decoration and CyS engraving.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Robusto Churchill “Yalta Edition”

In 2020, Swiss luxury watch brand Cuervo y Sobrinos created a limited-edition model, the Robusto Churchill, to mark the 75th anniversary of the Yalta conference and, in particular, the close relationship between two great nations, the UK and the US. The Robusto Churchill features a guilloché dial, innovative crown design, 3-part modular case construction and a Swiss automatic movement. Limited to just 500 pieces, scarcity is assured.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Robusto Churchill “Yalta Edition”

In February 1945, Churchill, Roosevelt and Stalin met near Yalta in Crimea. Over a number of days, the three leaders, often termed the ‘Big Three’, discussed the future of a post-war Europe. It was agreed that post-war Germany would be demilitarised and divided into four post-war occupation zones controlled by France, the UK, the US and the Soviet Union.

A consequence of the conference was that some borders would eventually be redrawn. Moreover, the citizens of some nation states would ultimately benefit from free elections and self-determination while, sadly, others would be denied such democratic privileges. It is now the 75th anniversary of the Yalta conference and the world is now a very different place.

The Swiss Manufacture with Cuban heritage, celebrates this momentous period in 20th century history with the release of a new limited-edition watch, the Robusto Churchill.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Robusto Churchill “Yalta Edition”

Cuervo y Sobrinos was known to the former British Prime Minister. When he travelled to Havana in 1946, he visited the luxury marque’s boutique.

The name Robusto is used to describe a short and ‘robust’ cigar, making it an apt moniker for this Churchill-inspired, limited-edition model. Hoyo de Monterrey Petit Robustos offers enthusiasts an intoxicating blend of premium tobacco and changing flavors. It’s a great choice for you if you are a smoking lover.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Robusto Churchill “Yalta Edition”

Plump, silver-toned hour and minute hands collaborate with prominent hour markers, conveying the prevailing time in a highly legible form. The hour markers comprise of faceted, triangular indexes for even values and elaborately-shaped Arabic numerals for odd-numbered values. A slither of Super-LumiNova adorns the hands, aiding legibility in restricted light.

The guilloché dial features a Clous de Paris motif, resembling a series of woven arc-shaped lines. Located above 6 o’clock, two apertures, positioned one above the other, display the day and date succinctly. A central sweep seconds hand integrates with the neat track framing the dial, augmenting readability.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Robusto Churchill “Yalta Edition”

The Robusto Churchill is housed in a 43mm stainless steel case. It employs a 3-part modular construction technique and comprises of a central body, lateral sides and case back. This allows highly polished and satin finished surfaces to sit in close proximity, bestowing the case with an abundance of eye-appeal.

A hinged lever, positioned at 3 o’clock, serves as a crown. Its unusual design imbues the watch with a near-symmetrical profile while preventing any impingement of the wearer’s wrist. The Robusto Churchill is endowed with a see-through case back, featuring a depiction of Churchill and Roosevelt together.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Robusto Churchill “Yalta Edition”

At the heart of this elegant watch is a Swiss automatic movement, the CYS 5206 calibre. The watch is supplied on a caiman leather strap paired with a stainless steel folding buckle, engraved with the CyS emblem.

The Robusto Churchill is limited to just 500 pieces, a reference to the aforementioned gift of Romeo y Julieta cigars given to the legendary statesman.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Robusto Churchill “Yalta Edition”

This stylish model pays tribute to Sir Winston Leonard Spencer-Churchill and his friend, and ally, Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Their joint endeavours quashed what seemed at times to be an unsurmountable enemy. As the British prime minister once said about his dear departed friend, “In FDR there died the greatest American friend we have ever known”.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Vuelo Domingo Rosillo Limited Edition

Cuervo y Sobrinos presents a new limited-edition collection as a tribute to Cuban aviation pioneer Domingo Rosillo del Toro.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Vuelo Domingo Rosillo Limited Edition

In late 1912 Domingo Rosillo was in Paris to train and get his international flying license at an aviation school, run by non-other than Louis Bleriot. At the same place and time was another Cuban Augustin Parlá, who was to become his bitter rival in the quest for aviation records. The City of Havana was to inflame that rivalry by offering $10,000 (around $250, 000 in today’s money) to be the first person to cross the stretch of water from Key West USA to Havana, some 90 miles of treacherous open water.

Domingo Rosillo and Augustin Parlá
Domingo Rosillo and Augustin Parlá

Flying in those days was a highly perilous undertaking, so much so that millions worldwide were captivated by the record-breaking pilots and their exploits. On May 17th 1913 Domingo Rosillo got into his rotary engine Morane Saulnier Monoplane with just 50 horsepower. His rival Parlá who wanted to take off the same day was beset with technical problems and forced to abandon.

He took off in less than ideal conditions from Key West with a monkey that had been given to him as a good luck charm. Three Cuban Navy vessels were strung along the route as navigational aids as he flew without a compass. Had he encountered problems there was no alternative but to ditch the plane in the shark infested waters of the Florida Straits where there was no guarantee of being found and picked up.

After 2 hours of flying almost blind, a three-gun salute could be heard from the Havana Fortress and a flotilla of boats could be seen. After a 2.08 flight he landed, coming perilously close to running out of fuel and oil. He was greeted by an ecstatic crowd of 50,000 people in the grounds of Camp Columbia to salute his new world record of the longest flight ever over open water. Rosillo also delivered mail from the mayor of Key West to the mayor of Havana, making him the first airmail pilot in Cuba.

Domingo Rosillo Postcard

Not to be deterred and only two days later, his rival, the gentleman pilot Augustin Parlá attempted the same feat in his Curtiss seaplane. Armed with a compass, courage and great determination Rosillo’s nemesis snatched a victory of sorts from the jaws of defeat by landing in Mariel Harbor, travelling 117 miles and spending more time in the air. He consolation prize of $5000 was half of what Rosillo had claimed just two days earlier.

However, Rosillo was the first and his achievement cannot be understated putting him into aviation’s ‘hall of fame’, though over time, his great achievement got lost in the fog of new records. Putting his name back on the map is the inspiration for the Vuelo Rosillo Collection, a fitting homage to a courageous gentleman pilot.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Vuelo Domingo Rosillo Limited Edition

As a lasting tribute Cuervo y Sobrinos has launched the new Vuelo Rosillo collection: a limited edition of 90 pieces in dial colors that symbolize the 90 miles between Key West and Havana.

The Rosillo Range is the first pilot range to be produced under the Cuervo y Sobrinos name. It’s a sport watch with features that are typical of aviator watches: large numbers, high visibility dials and a pilot’s strap that contribute to the Latin retro chic that makes the brand so unique in the world of horology.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Vuelo Domingo Rosillo Limited Edition

The Vuelo (flight in Spanish) is a name that perfectly fits this range and serves to consolidate the retro and vintage DNA of the brand. Over time more modern ranges will transport the brand values into new territories that are more contemporary and fashionable.

The sophisticated 44 mm case of the Rosillo is aged with a modern rotary vibrator. The finishing is a lengthy process that takes up to 10 hours per case. The result is remarkable: no two pieces has the same patina adding more uniqueness and individual character.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Vuelo Domingo Rosillo Limited Edition

At the back of every watch can be found engravings of Rosillo’s daring feat. The flight route, the date of the flight and a beautifully crafted image of the plane.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Vuelo Domingo Rosillo Limited Edition

Each dial bears the Rosillo inscription which underlines their rarity coupled with the period typography coming from a stamp issued in his honor. The dial comes in four different colors that have carefully been chosen. Black because it has traditionally been the pilots’ color offering high visibility when contrasted with the hands and other technical features.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Vuelo Domingo Rosillo Limited Edition

Blue symbolizes the blue of the sea that separates Key West and Havana. Cream is a stylish epoch color that is ageless and easily mixed with almost every outfit. Kaki green as Rosillo became a Captain in the Cuban Armed Forces.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Vuelo Domingo Rosillo Limited Edition

The numerals and the hands are coated with SuperLuminova pigments to assure an optimal afterglow performance and all-night legibility. Another technical feat is the Cuervo y Sobrinos mark at 12 o’clock. This has been meticulously filled allowing you to marvel at it all night. The straps are made of kangaroo leather, a highly resistant material which is used for motorcycle accessories and calfskin which completes this retro chic picture.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Prominente Tocororo Unique Edition Created for Carlos Acosta

On the occasion of the annual Latino Awards ceremony, Cuervo y Sobrinos gifted Cuban ballet dancer Carlos Acosta a personalised edition of the Prominente Tocororo watch. The ceremony presented by M. Marino Luzardo took place on the Iberostar Gran Packard Hotel terrace at 8pm on March 15th 2019 and was attended by distinguished guests.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Prominente Tocororo Unique Edition Created for Carlos AcostaThis Limited Edition of one of the most iconic Cuervo y Sobrinos timepieces is inspired by the Cuban national bird, the Tocororo: Carlos Acosta’s first performance as choreographer and star was in a dance theater piece called ‘Tocororo’.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Prominente Tocororo Unique Edition Created for Carlos Acosta

Tocororo is Acosta’s own ballet and has been touring theatres worldwide to high acclaim.  Tocororo is the story of a young Cuban boy who leaves his family and home in the Cuban countryside to find a new life in a city. It is loosely based on Acosta’s own life experiences. It is set to original music by Miguel Nuñez, which blends popular and symphonic Cuban styles and is performed live on stage by a group of five Cuban musicians.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Prominente Tocororo Unique Edition Created for Carlos Acosta

Acosta chose the 17-strong company from dancers in Danza Contemporanea de Cuba, the Cuban National Ballet and Conjunto Folklorico Nacional de Cuba. The “young protagonist” is played by Yonah Acosta, Acosta’s younger nephew, and for six performances the central role was played by José Oduardo Perez.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Prominente Tocororo Unique Edition Created for Carlos Acosta

The watch is personalised with the logo of Mr. Acosta’s dance company. Ballet and watchmaking have many similarities in that they require great precision, passion and creative flair. These are qualities that typify the work of Carlos Acosta and Cuervo y Sobrinos.

Carlos Yunior Acosta Quesada CBE (born 2 June 1973) is a Cuban ballet dancer. He has danced with many companies including the English National Ballet, National Ballet of Cuba, Houston Ballet and American Ballet Theatre. He was a permanent member of The Royal Ballet between 1998 and 2015. In 2003, he was promoted to Principal Guest Artist, a rank which reduced his commitment, enabling him to concentrate on a growing schedule of international guest appearances and tours. He celebrated his farewell after 17 years at The Royal Ballet, dancing his last performance in November 2015 in Carmen, which he both choreographed and starred in.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Torpedo Pirata Crono Day Date

Secret beaches, buried treasures: Caribbean islands such as Cuba, Tortuga and Santo Domingo were once a favourite hunting ground for famous pirates. The new Torpedo Pirata Crono Day Date watch pays tribute to the adventurous and romantic spirit of the buccaneers. This is why within the bezel the sentence “Pirata de el Tiempo de la Vida” is engraved.

All the parts are clearly reminiscent of the brazenness of the great pirates: the case is in the shape of a cannon mouth while the lugs represent the bow of a ship plundering on the Caribbean Sea. The crown subtle design in the shape of the globe and the buckle recaptures the design of the lugs.

An important feature of this masterpiece is the modular case composed of rings uniquely tailored allowing to combine the various metals which create a watch with ongoing evolution. In fact, the stainless-steel material used in the current model, is the innovation compared to its predecessors made in bronze, the material preferred at the time of the great buccaneers of the 17th century.

The Torpedo Pirata Chrono Day Date houses an automatic movement, the black velvet effect of the chronograph’s dial combines a perfect balance of two counters: 12-hour scale and 30-minute counter. In addition to a central seconds’ counter, hours and minutes and also an independent second’s counter at 9 o’clock with printed Cuervo y Sobrinos blazon and day date window at 3 o’clock.

The sapphire crystal case-back on each model reveals the details of the automatic movement. The crystal case-back features a unique logo for this model; two “swords” surround the classic CyS logo, paying a tribute to the pirate world in which the watch was inspired.

A delight to wear because of the reduced size of the case (32 x 43 mm) – perfectly in line with today’s trend of elegance and sobriety – the new Prominente collection of timepieces is a perfect example of sophisticated allure.

The Prominente houses the CyS 5101 movement on ETA2892-A2 base. It is an automatic movement with 42 hours of power reserve, water resistant to 3ATM. It offers hours, minutes, seconds and date indication. The watch is crafted in stainless steel and the movement is visible through a transparent sapphire case back.

This new model in a cream-colored dial with classic stripes finishing, transmits the warmth and the emotion of the brand unmistakably associated with its Cuban origins. The double curved sapphire crystal gives to the watch a fascinating touch of vintage style from the 40’s. Available from June 2015 in the best retail shops Worldwide.
