Purnell ESCAPE II Double Spherion Icy Blue (with Platinum case and Icy Blue finishes)

Purnell unveils the Escape II Double Spherion Icy Blue with a platinum case and icy blue finishes.

Purnell Escape II collection, already known for its two high-velocity triple-axis tourbillons called “Spherions”, is presented in the most precious material: platinum.

Under Escape II sapphire crystal dome lays a fascinating mechanism featuring a double Spherion. The Spherion’s inner cage housing the balance wheel makes a full revolution in just 8 seconds, the second cage completes its revolution in 16 seconds, while the outer cage rotates in 30 seconds, which makes it the fastest triple axis tourbillon in the world. This spectacular tourbillon movement was developed by Master Watchmaker Eric Coudray.

The watch has a 48mm diameter case made of Platinum 950 and a sapphire dial. In addition to all, a rare and particularly seductive Icy blue finishes the watch novelty with brilliant audacity.

An arctic touch is visible on the indexes of the sapphire hour and minute dial, on the hands and on the two Spherion cages.

Purnell Escape Primo WPM

After releasing last year the fastest double triple-axis tourbillon in the world, Purnell presents in collaboration with its iconic Master watchmaker Eric Coudray the Escape Primo, a new caliber CP11 with a single Spherion and a power reserve indicator.

Escape Primo becomes the world’s fastest triple axis tourbillon with a rotation of its Spherion in 8 seconds, 16 seconds & 30 seconds. The Escape Primo is presented in a WPM case, standing for “White Purnell Microfiber”, an all-new exclusive ultra-light and extremely heat and shock-resistant material.

WPM (White Purnell Microfiber) is a 100% Swiss made material. Escape Primo WPM case is composed of 4 blocks of WPM. Produced by vacuum injection molding, WPM has a particularly homogenic and smooth off-white appearance due to a fine polishing technique using very small-scale diamond tools.

Its surface is hardened with heat and finished with an anti-UV treatment, making it very resistant to all temperature conditions. The objective of WPM is to go beyond what conventional white ceramic offers, providing a lighter material (density 1,25g/cm3) and stronger shock-resistant properties.

The watch houses the CP11 caliber with a single Spherion: the world’s fastest triple axis tourbillon: 8, 16, 30 seconds; 50-hour power reserve with power reserve indicator.

PURNELL Double Spherion Escape IIS Collection – Escape IIS Treasure and Escape IIS Treasure Baguette

The Swiss watch brand, Purnell, specialized in high-velocity tourbillons, presents the Escape IIS Treasure, the latest addition to its Double Spherion Escape collection, and the brand’s first-ever grand complication designed for women.

The Escape IIS Treasure is driven by Purnell’s ground-breaking double-Spherion movement, designed and developed in collaboration with master watchmaker Eric Coudray. To adapt what is today the world’s fastest triple-axis tourbillon to a feminine wrist without giving up any of its power, Purnell redesigned its Escape II, the world’s first double Spherion movement.

What is more, Purnell added to its exceptional new timepiece, a feature that is a world premiere: a pair of tourbillon cages set with gemstones. This extraordinary feat of nanotechnology combined with precision gem-setting know-how has never before been achieved in watchmaking history.

The new Escape IIS Treasure collection offers a choice of four new versions, each customizable upon request. Each version comes with a skeletonized movement, a 32-hour power reserve, and a 44mm case made smaller for a feminine wrist. Two versions, the Treasure Diamond and the Treasure Rainbow are set with diamonds or “rainbow” gemstones on their tourbillon cages, while two more versions also feature a case and dial fully set with baguette-cut diamonds or “rainbow” gemstones.

Purnell Escape IIS Treasure Rainbow: Case in 18k Rose gold; Cages set with 304 brilliant-cut sapphires, rubies and emeralds

Across this collection, the sparkle of gemstones enhances the visual spectacle of the double Spherions visible through a custom-crafted monobloc sapphire glass, setting a new standard for grand complications for women.

Specialized in gravity-defying tourbillons since it was founded in 2006, Purnell introduced its “Spherion” – a triple-axis tourbillon – in 2017 in the Escape I model. That Spherion construction, designed by Purnell in collaboration with Eric Coudray, featured a triple-axis tourbillon mechanism rotating at higher velocities than any existing triple-axis tourbillon. Its movement relied on the Potter Escapement which Eric Coudray modified in part by adding “internal teeth” to its escapement wheel, to improve performance and reduce energy consumption. Purnell’s Spherion became then the world’s fastest triple-axis tourbillon.

Two years later, Eric Coudray and his team successfully developed the Escape II, the next iteration of Purnell’s Escape collection. The Escape II unveiled in late 2019 offered Purnell’s clients something completely unexpected: an intricately-designed movement powered by not one, but two counter-rotative Spherions inside two tourbillon cages rotating in opposite directions on exactly the same path.

Fitting the double-Spherions into the movement required two years of development for the watchmakers to rethink the caliber construction and 386 components in their entirety. Fourteen months were required to develop the single-piece sapphire glass and side-viewing windows positioned by the lugs at 6 o’clock, to enhance the experience of full visibility onto the two high-speed Spherions.

With its own sophisticated, female collector-base in mind, Purnell has designed the Escape IIS Treasure as the quintessence of the spectacular, powered by its high velocity Spherions that come alive in a mesmerizing dance inside their gem-set tourbillon cages.

For the first time in watchmaking history, the Escape IIS Treasure features tourbillon cages with arms set with gemstones. The task of gem-setting the tiny arms raised its own set of challenges. First, the surface on the arms of the tourbillon cages had to be increased to create enough space to set 152 brilliant-cut gemstones on each outer cage. For that, Purnell redesigned the tourbillon cages with a wider arm architecture without compromising either the precision or the function of the Spherions, or reducing the 32-hour power reserve.

Purnell Escape IIS Treasure Baguette Diamonds: Case in 18k white gold, and outer and inner case with crown set with 326 baguette diamonds (totaling 20.26 carats); Cages set with 304 brilliant-cut diamonds; Dial in 18k white gold set with 46 baguette diamonds and 11 baguette blue sapphires (for Indexes) (totaling 1.04 carats)

In its feminine iteration, the new model had to be imminently wearable. For that, the case size of the Escape IIS Treasure – the “S” standing for “small” – was reduced to 44mm, down from the 48mm of the Escape II, its predecessor. Next, the overall weight of the cages was re-balanced, given the added weight of the diamonds. The weight of the movement was maintained at just 15.7 grams with each Spherion weighing a mere 0.831 grams.

Finally, gem-setting on the robust titanium for the cages posed a significant challenge, yet it was one that Purnell overcame by calling upon the skills of its talented gem-setting artisans using extreme precision to apply special technique adapted to titanium.

Four variations of the Escape IIS Treasure are now available, with identical technical specifications but varying case materials and gem-setting options. The double Spherion outer cages, made of blue titanium, are set with 304 gemstones, in a choice of either brilliant-cut diamonds or a rainbow-setting of sapphires, rubies and emeralds. The case materials include black DLC-coated grade 5 titanium, 18kt rose gold, or 18kt white gold. Each model may be custom-designed upon request.

C. Purnell Spherion – The World’s Fastest Triple-Axis Tourbillon

Created in partnership with master watchmaker Eric Coudray and TEC Ebauches, the Spherion by C. Purnell incorporates a triple-axis tourbillon that rotates a full 360 degrees in just eight seconds, optimizing precision by averaging out the effects of gravity on the escapement.

The inspiration for the creative approach to the Spherion began during World War I when the brand’s namesake, Cecil Purnell, taught himself watchmaking after being injured in battle. Fascinated by Abraham-Louis Breguet and his tourbillon invention, Purnell spent years instilling his passion for the tourbillon into his grandson, Jonathan Purnell. Decades later, Jonathan founded C. Purnell in honor of his grandfather and his beloved mechanism, the tourbillon. More than a decade after founding the brand and eleven tourbillon calibers later, the idea for Spherion was born.

The Spherion concept is based around the creation of a unique, high-speed, multi-axis tourbillon pushing all existing boundaries of tourbillon capability. The intention was to upend convention by inventing a new mechanism, taking the tourbillon to new heights. Development began in 2015, and it was clear from the start that visually highlighting the mechanism was going to be a top priority. A view of the mechanism drove the aesthetic design of the movement, case and crystal, making Spherion the most demanding timepiece created by C. Purnell to date.

To develop the Spherion, C. Purnell teamed up with legendary master watchmaker Eric Coudray and TEC Ebauches. Coudray, the mastermind behind incredible timepieces such as the Jaeger-LeCoultre Gyrotourbillon and Cabestan Trapezium, worked with C. Purnell for more than two years to develop this masterpiece.

The inner tourbillon cage of Spherion’s triple-axis tourbillon makes more than seven rotations each minute (less than eight seconds);the inner, middle and outer tourbillon cages all rotate at higher velocities than previously attained in a triple-axis tourbillon: 8 seconds, 16 seconds, and 30 seconds respectively.

This sensational technical achievement is worthy of an equally spectacular case to highlight the triple-axis tourbillon. C. Purnell developed a highly complicated and unusual sapphire crystal, which added more than a year to the development of the Spherion; creation of this sapphire crystal required fourteen months of research and development to acquire the optimal shape and quality. The result is an astonishing sapphire crystal window with a vertical wall at 6 o’clock stretching all the way to the bottom of the case to provide an unimpeded view of the multi-axis tourbillon. The complex case and crystal design are both critical features for optimally displaying the tourbillon in action.

The first examples of Spherion were completed in late 2017, with very few from the first production remaining. As if creating the world’s fastest triple-axis tourbillon and a complicated sapphire crystal was not enough, Spherion is also customizable by design with five case options and myriad color choices for the dial, hands and outer tourbillon cage. The outermost tourbillon cage can be customized to the client’s color or finish preference using a variety of methods, including anodizing, hydrographics and applied lacquer. The dial and hands can also be customized to match or accent the outer tourbillon cage using applied lacquer in the client’s colors of choice. With so many available options, each Spherion becomes a unique and mesmerizing creation with the highest level of exclusivity.

Spherion’s open movement architecture makes for a very light caliber in terms of both aesthetics and weight, coming in at just 15.7 grams. When combined with the option of a titanium case, the Spherion becomes a featherweight packing a huge horological punch. A forty-hour power reserve ensures that punch lasts, and the simple, clean dial focuses attention squarely on the groundbreaking multi-axis tourbillon.

Spherion is available in a choice of polished, satin-blasted or black DLC-coated grade 5 titanium,18kt rose gold, or 18kt white gold and comes with a three-year warranty extendable to five years by registering with C. Purnell.

The compact nature of the triple-axis tourbillon makes it particularly challenging to assemble and, with its fast-rotational period, even more challenging to regulate. Assembling the caliber CP01 movement requires patience and takes weeks, not days, which is on par with very complicated movements. The difficulty varies depending on client customizations, which may require different techniques to ensure no damage comes to the customized components or their finishes and that the delicate balance of the tourbillon cages is maintained. After assembly, the movement is regulated in six positions. The entire process of regulating the movement to a high level of precision can take two weeks of slow and careful adjustment.

The triple-axis tourbillon may be the raison d’être of Spherion, but the case and crystal designs are crucial to its owner’s experience. From the beginning of development, a unique, commanding case and sapphire crystal were as equally important to C. Purnell as the movement, as the concept centers on an open, curved crystal emphasizing the multi-axis tourbillon. Interlinked, development of Spherion’s case and crystal were two of the most demanding components during the years of development.

The battle for design integrity resulted in many case manufacturers being unwilling to take up the challenge as it was said to be too difficult to create a complex sapphire crystal in the required shape. Finally, a crystal manufacturer willing to attempt such a risky design was found, and once development on the sapphire crystal began it took another fourteen months.

The case and crystal development had a profound impact on Spherion’s journey. The movement was ready after two years of research, development, and prototyping, allowing Spherion to be released in late 2016, but development of the sapphire crystal delayed the launch until the following year. As it turned out, the delay was actually a positive because it allowed C. Purnell and Coudray to further optimize design and technical integrity. The extra development time allowed any minor issues with the movement or finishes to be dealt with, ensuring Spherion would create the experience that Jonathan Purnell envisioned from the beginning.

C. PURNELL WATCHES

C. Purnell (Earlier known as Cecil Purnell) is a high luxury watch brand specialized in the manufacturing of exclusive tourbillon watches entirely made in Switzerland.

C. Purnell was unofficially founded during World War I when the brand’s namesake, Cecil Purnell, was injured on the battlefield. While recovering, he taught himself watchmaking and subsequently became fascinated by Abraham-Louis Breguet and the invention he patented in 1801, the tourbillon.

Cecil Purnell repaired watches as an amateur watchmaker for the rest of his life and instilled his passion for the tourbillon into his grandson, Jonathan Purnell, who ardently watched his grandfather while he worked. Cecil Purnell always emphasized the tourbillon as an elite mechanism, leading Jonathan to develop a profound respect for it as well.

Jonathan Purnell began his career in horology buying and selling watches in 1977. In 2006, Purnell decided to follow his dream and, together with industry professional Stéphane Valsamides, founded Cecil Purnell SA (later shortened to C. Purnell) in the Swiss Jura mountains to honor his grandfather and his beloved mechanism, the tourbillon. From the brand’s inception, every timepiece created has included a tourbillon, and the use of it has remained the driving philosophy behind C. Purnell to date. In 2009, after three years of development, C. Purnell launched its first caliber developed fully in-house, theCP3000, and transferred the company’s operations to Geneva, Switzerland.

Over the past fifteen years, C. Purnell has created 13 tourbillon calibers and sold more than 700 timepieces, winning numerous awards and accolades along the way. C. Purnell, who continues to pursue the creation of artistic horological masterpieces, typically produces up to fifty pieces a year to ensure quality and exclusivity.

C. Purnell creates exciting timepieces with unique complications, developing them in very small numbers for the most discerning and passionate collectors. The passion and ingenuity of Jonathan Purnell is as tangible in every incredible tourbillon-infused timepiece as the inspiration of his grandfather.
