CABESTAN

Founded by Jean-François Ruchonnet in 2013, Cabestan stands as a major independent fine watchmaking brand in the modern era.

Lively by passion of creation, the avant-garde watchmaker transcends all contemporary watchmaking metrics. History, Craftsmanship, and Innovation are the three core values Cabestan relies upon. These are the DNA of the brand identity. All Cabestan timepieces reflect and respect the entire watchmaking cultural legacy, through their process creation, carried out in the Vallée de Joux.

All movements are engineered and in-house developed with ancestral elements paying tributes to horological history, such as the Nickel Silver material, for new creations. The core technology of the Cabestan watches relies on the premises of watchmaking, back to the early beginning of the 15th century, when the mechanical fusée-and-chain concept was invented.

Always in the pursuit of perfection, Cabestan allies innovation with know-how in order to reach the uniqueness of extreme time precision. Defying all gravitational attraction properties and mechanical conventions, Cabestan timepieces are among the finest mechanical arts to be made. Through its brand identity and exceptional team of watchmakers, the Cabestan’s work signature itself, remains as a pledge of guarantee to its owner.

Back to the early third millenary, in 2003, the Cabestan brand was created, with a new and exceptional design and a unique identity. After years of development on creating an innovative yachting-influenced watch, the Winch Tourbillon Vertical concept saw the light and Cabestan started to make its mark over history.

Over time, they have turned watchmaking on its head with its unconventional design, where internal parts have been shifted vertically with a vertically placed tourbillon on the lower right-hand side. The Winch Tourbillon Vertical was born.

In 2008, one of the most acknowledged and talented master watchmakers, Eric Coudray, joined Cabestan with his team. In 2009, after a few years of movement watch finalization and improvement, the first Winch Tourbillon Vertical was delivered. Couple of months later, the company was taken over by a new investor. Full of convictions, Cabestan launched the collection Titanic DNA in collaboration with Romain Jerome.

In 2010 a new timepiece was launched, under the name of Trapezium, with an exceptional new design and movement improvements. The brand also formed a partnership with Scuderia Ferrari, and launched the SF1 series, in collaboration with Ferrari design director, Flavio Manzoni.

In 2012, as any hard and successful work comes to a recognition momentum, Cabestan has been blessed for its design to the GTE awards, regarding the Trapezium creation and Eric Coudray received the Gaîa price for his craftsmanship and creation talent.

In 2013, a new team took over the company with at its head, a new CEO and owner, Lionel Betoux. Followed by its new owner’s momentum, Cabestan launched an exceptional and stunning creation, allying expertise and unique design, the 3D moon-phase Luna Nera.

In 2015, the brand launched the Triple Axis Tourbillon.

Lionel Betoux: CEO & Brand Owner

Representing the epitome of a self-made man, Lionel Betoux began his entrepreneurial development from a young age emerged in an environment brimming with vision, art, history and culture. After completing a degree in mechanical engineering as well as two MBA’s, Lionel went on to fill such roles as designer and program director in such prestigious companies as Volvo Cars, Nestlé, Merck Serrono and Rolex to name only a few.

Always the globetrotter, his work has spanned three continents and more than 12 countries including the United States, Spain, France, Croatia, UK and Switzerland. Understanding the importance of developing leadership, both, inside and outside the office, Lionel draws from his experience as a professional basketball coach to hone his professional skills as a manager and team builder.

Cabestan, being a brand that symbolizes all the core values dearest to him: craftsmanship, culture, art, history, mechanics and team spirit in a family size company, Lionel had no choice other than to pounce on the opportunity to take over the independent watch manufacture.

Eric Coudray: Master Watchmaker

In 2008, Eric Coudray joined the Cabestan Manufacture. Eric has brought to Cabestan his more than 20 years of experience and his reputation as one of the finest master watchmakers alive. Respected and admired by watch collectors and fellow watchmakers throughout the world for his creations, including his famous Gyrotourbillons, Eric Coudray continues to amaze the world with his devotion to creating horological emotion, made to his own incredibly high standards.

Cabestan: DragonNera & SnakeNera

Cabestan’s new DragonNera & SnakeNera timepieces represent testament of Cabestan’s shared values, craftsmanship, history and innovation.

Made 100% in-house, the DragonNera represents a dream of a Cabestan’s customer that became reality. Cabestan team, led by Lionel Betoux, signed a breathtaking accomplishment by displaying an exceptional 3D imperial Chinese dragon, fitting the traditional Luna Nera movement.

The highly sophisticated movement speaks for itself. Entirely made in house and hand finished, the CAB EC102LD represents six months of time creation and two years of development. Both the dragon and the movement respect the historical traditions of watchmaking and allege a substantial tribute to craftsmanship.

Cabestan DragonNera watch

100% in-house developed and made, the timepiece unveils a fascinating and genuine jeweler craftwork. With only 20mm wide and 25mm long, the DragonNera features the smallest 3D dragon ever made in a watch, representing more than 300 hours of true artwork. The challenges set by the mechanism itself with the chain, wheels and tourbillon cage, make of the whole dragon creation an engineering prowess. The eyes, tongue, teeth and ears only represent tenths of millimeter, not to speak of the paw toes.

Fruit of a long production process, the 5N rose gold dragon is first made out of a casting mold process. Afterwards come the polishing and sandblasting, before the main engraving work. The 3D structure will then see itself given another final polishing treatment. The delicacy of achievement on such a 3D structure reaches the highest standards, given the constraint properties each part represents on a millimeter scale.

The sapphire crystal glass, allows us to observe the ultimate work thoroughness of the 3D dragon as well as the mechanism precision. This exceptional piece is composed of a manually wound movement: caliber CAB EC 102LD, with 46 rubies. The mechanism indicates the hours, minutes, seconds and power reserve by drums, the last one being indicated by the front right paw of the dragon.

The time is semi-jumping for easier reading, and the moon phase, meanwhile, is at the center of the movement and is represented by a sphere of 7.40 mm diameter. The torque is transmitted from the drum barrel to the fuse via a chain. This concept allows a constant torque transmission throughout the power reserve (72 hours), ensuring greater accuracy in the measurement of time.

In the SnakeNera, the legendary reptilian creature comes joining the brand creations of exceptional timepieces by the fabulous association of craftsmanships within the Cabestan Manufacture.

Sense of refinement, the SnakeNera CAB EC102LS shows a different sense of creativity. Still embracing the values of craftsmanship but outdoing its standards in the same way the DragonNera does. With the same movement base, the SnakeNera builds up and shows the extend of Cabestan’s know-how. Both the snake structure itself and the watch are 100% made in-house, in Cabestan’s Manufacture.

Cabestan SnakeNera watch

Every single component is hand finished. There is a whole variety of finishing being applied (beveling, circular graining, drawing, polishing, sandblasting, milling,..) making of this piece a real piece of art, not only from a technical standpoint, but also in terms of achievement. As Cabestan is deeply embedded in craftsmanship and history, each piece has to leave the Manufacture in compliance with the watchmaking tradition standards.

As regards to the mesmerizing snake, it is a true pledge of insanity. The craftwork stands on a 3D 750 white gold structure only 1,5cm wide and 2cm long (7cm long extended), and this tiny piece represents 150 hours of tool work. Thoroughness is mandatory and patience is the keyword as the eyes only measure 0.3 of a millimeter. The most challenging being the engraving on specific areas almost impossible to set, like the tail tip, only seven-tenths of a millimeter long. The whole structure is sandblasted treated under, and fully polished on the top.

Cabestan Triple Axis Tourbillon

Brimming with history, this new Cabestan timepiece is based on the alliance between traditional skills, technological innovation and ever more avant-garde design.

Cabestan DNA draws its strength from the presence of the inseparable fusee and chain endowing the movement with peerless and reliable accuracy by ensuring constant force transmission throughout the 50-hour power reserve. The flying triple axis tourbillon, equipped with a spring balance oscillating at a frequency of 3 Hz, rotates separately for each axis in 17 seconds, 19 seconds, and 60 seconds respectively, bringing a lively animated touch to the movement. The balance spring features a Breguet style overcoil with a Geneva stud. An endplate uniformly distributes the curve of the spring. The winding and time-setting are manually adjusted by a two-position crown.

Inspired by sailing boats, this amazing watch recalls the pure, athletic and sleek shape of a catamaran, while the pure hand-made sapphire tube provides a luminous setting for a unique and exclusive flying triple axis tourbillon. Much like in the production of bottled boats made by enthusiasts of sailing and the sea, the assembly of the movement is entirely done on the outside, and the H-shaped self-supporting plate is then cased up from the side, before the ensemble is sealed by two sapphire crystal windows.

The regulating component is composed of a flying triple axis tourbillon with a spring balance frequency of 3Hz, making three independent rotations:

  • First axis: one rotation in 60 seconds
  • Second axis: one rotation in 19 seconds
  • Third axis: one rotation in 17 seconds

The balance spring has a Breguet terminal curve and a Geneva stud. An end plate uniformaly distributes the curve of the spring. The winding and time-setting are manually adjusted by one crown with 2 positions. This exceptional piece is composed of a manually wound movement: Caliber CAB EC 17, needing not less than 1044 components. The mechanism indicates the hours, minutes and seconds. The torque is transmitted from the spring barrel to the fusee via a chain. This construction allows a constant torque transmission throughout the power reserve (50 hours), ensuring greater accuracy in the measurement of time.

The amazing tourbillon movement with the chain and fuse mechaism is housed in a magnificently sculptured case with twin crystals providing astonishing views of the vertical movement inside. It has capstans on the sides. The vertically-mounted wheels are suspended in the air. Drums indicate time, and a vertical tourbillon provides the incredible precision desired.

Cabestan Winch Tourbillon Vertical Yellow gold watch

A winch turns a fuse. A chain transfers energy to a drum. A mainspring in the drum stores the energy and retransmitting a constant force, via the chain and fusee, to the movement. The technology was developed in the 15th century, but never before has it been so spectacularly used in a timepiece.

The movement, engineered by Eric Coudray, is amazingly precise. The miniature chain and fuse perfectly compensate for the loss of torque in the mainspring and deliver a constant force to the vertical tourbillon.

Cabestan Winch Tourbillon Vertical black pvd titanium watch

Tourbillons are well-known instruments that correct for the variations in amplitude of the balance due to the Earth’s gravitational attraction. But a tourbillon is only effective if it is vertical, between 30° and 150° of inclination. Cabestan’s vertical tourbillon provides unparalleled accuracy. Every Cabestan Winch Tourbillon Vertical is regulated to +/- 1 second per day.

Each Cabestan timepiece is handmade in the brand’s own manufacture by one of the most talented teams of watchmakers in Switzerland. Each and every surface is finished by hand. Sol Invictus by Cabestan & Marc Alfieri : The First Mechanical Watch in the World to Integrate a Perpetual Winding System Powered by Solar Energy

Jointly developed by Swiss luxury watch maker Cabestan & Marc Alfieri , Sol Invictus is the first mechanical watch in the world to integrate a perpetual winding system powered by solar energy.

This spectacular timepiece incarnates the new generation of exclusive watchmaking : three of the leading names in the industry, Marc Alfieri, Jean-François Ruchonnet and Eric Coudray.

Marc Alfieri, an avant garde watchmaker, is also a major actor in the large scale deployment of solar panels in France. During a meeting with Jean-François Ruchonnet, this experience led him to the idea of combining the astonishing movement of the Cabestan Winch Tourbillon Vertical, with its chain and fusée, drums and vertical tourbillon, and a rewinding system powered by solar energy at a scale never seen before. The vision was to link the Cabestanʼs micromechanics to miniature photovoltaic cells, store energy and then draw upon it as needed, to electro-mechanically set the time and perpetually rewind the movement.

Sol Invictus by Cabestan & Marc Alfieri : The First Mechanical Watch in the World to Integrate a Perpetual Winding System Powered by Solar EnergyMarc Alfieri, who installs vast surfaces of solar panels capable of generating 100 megawatts of electricity, adapted this technology to Sol Invictus to produce only 100 milliwatts, or one billion times less power.

To achieve this, he worked with lʼINES (lʼInstitut National de lʼEnergie Solaire) who recently developed a revolutionary new technique for producing and treating silicium crystals that can be used to produce highly efficient solar cells that are especially suitable for small surfaces and low luminosity. Sol Invictus will have the honour of being the worldʼs first commercial utilisation of this groundbreaking technology.

Two brushless micromotors are employed, one for rewinding the movement and the other for setting the time. Typically used in the medical industry, they have a diameter of only 1.9 mm and a length of 5.5 mm. A miniature controller regulates and amplifies the electrical charge, manages the two micromotors via a programmable oscillator and assures the direction and the speed of the motors.

To activate and deactivate the motors, a twin-blade electromechanical contact is used to open and close the electrical circuit. The result is an amazing system for powering the movement, based on an exciting combination of the latest in solar technology and century old electromechanical know-how.

Jean-François Ruchonnet, working with Marc Alfieri, placed his spectacular vertical Cabestan movement in the center of the timepiece. Perfectly balanced at 12 oʼ clock and 6 oʼ clock, he added two solar panels mounted in metal frames held in place by cleverly designed pivots.

The micromotors and rechargeable lithium-ion batteries are positioned to be discretely visible underneath the solar cells. In the middle of the movement, the twin-blade contact and its glass casing, based on the designs of 19th century scientist Léon Foucault, is eminently visible. The complex mechanism that links the crown to the movement also includes a striking 30 mm long axle that traverses the movement in its width.

Finally, the watchcase is inspired by Marc Alfieriʼs designs, but Jean-François Ruchonnet restyled it, giving it an elegantly curved shape, a single curved crystal, a lateral window at 9 oʼclock and a sapphire case back all designed to increase the visibility of the incredible mechanism inside.

Eric Coudray had the task of working with Jean-François Ruchonnetʼs design and Marc Alfieriʼs solar energy system, to integrate the technologies used and make sure that Sol Invictus works perfectly. He started by creating an elaborate system that automatically detects when the barillet needs to be rewound. At the end of its power reserve, a magnet automatically moves next to the glass tube containing the twin blade contacts.

The magnetic attraction closes the electrical circuit and starts the rewinding sequence. The energy delivered by the motor passes through a set of differential gears before rewinding the movement by acting upon the chain and fusée. Once finished, the magnet is moved away and the contact opens to stop the motor.

A separate motor is used to set the time electro-mechanically. The multifunction crown is equipped with a releasable mechanism that enables the owner to rewind the watch both electromechanically and manually, and to set time electromechanically.

Suggested retail price for the Sol Invictus titanium model is CHF 595,000. Each timepiece will be produced on demand using the materials and configuration desired by its future owner, making each piece unique.

Cabestan Scuderia Ferrari One Special Series in Association with Ferrari Design Team

Cabestan, the prestigious creator of exclusive Swiss timepieces, announces a partnership with Ferrari to jointly design and produce a limited edition luxury timepiece to celebrate the Prancing Horse’s Formula 1 racing history.

The Scuderia Ferrari One by Cabestan is deeply inspired by Ferrari race car technology and design. The result is a watch like no other seen before: 8 cubic centimetres of pure mechanical perfection and exacting design. Jean-François Ruchonnet, with 25 years of experience in creating exceptional timepieces, passionate about high performance cars and races, created this watch to embody the excitement, the innovation, the technology, the style and the attention to details of Ferrari.

Starting with the revolutionary motor he developed to power the Cabestan Winch Tourbillon Vertical, Ruchonnet created a high performance timepiece with an elegantly sleek and racy design coupled with the high tech materials found in Ferrari’s Formula 1 race cars.

To reach deep into Ferrari DNA, Jean-François Ruchonnet teamed up with the Ferrari design team in Maranello, led by Design Director Flavio Manzoni. The two worked together to identify elements in Ferrari’s Formula 1 race cars that would become the basic design components of the new Scuderia Ferrari One by Cabestan. Every part had to serve a specific purpose. Every material was chosen to enhance performance.

Cabestan Scuderia Ferrari One Special Series in Association with Ferrari Design Team
The case of the Scuderia Ferrari One by Cabestan embodies speed, power and aerodynamic perfection, and is made of a titanium alloy created for components of Ferrari Formula 1 cars. The single crystal, surpassing the edges of the case, enhances the distinctive visual lineage that is unmistakably Ferrari.

On the sides, a special magnesium alloy was used to create likenesses of race car wheels and the lug nuts that are emblematic of pit stop tire changes during Grand Prix races.

Cabestan Scuderia Ferrari One Special Series in Association with Ferrari Design Team
By design, the revolutionary vertical gear-train of the motor is perfectly visible under the crystal, showcasing the large wheel inspired by the F1 world. The rotary drums, made of lightweight aluminium, are engraved with numbers that are the same as those on the instrument panels that provide real time data to Ferrari’s Formula 1 drivers.

In the centre, there is a block of carbon composite material created by Ferrari for use in high-performance car parts where a high tensile strength, low weight ratio is required. Finally, the leather strap, recalls the Daytona leather seats of Ferrari automobiles.

The nucleus of the motor, engineered by renowned master watchmaker Eric Coudray, is its vertical tourbillon, an exceptional technology designed to compensate for variations in the amplitude of the balance due the effects of the Earth’s gravity.

To take the precision of this timepiece to a higher plane, the energy delivered to the movement is transmitted by a miniature chain and fusée that perfectly compensates the torque curve of the mainspring, using a 6-speed automatic transmission to deliver a constant force to the tourbillon. The result is a mechanical watch engine that is amazingly accurate: ± 1 second per day.

Ferrari is synonymous with excellence and innovation, and constantly strives for perfection also in the selection of its partners: Cabestan shares with Ferrari the same passion, excitement and performance. For Ferrari and Cabestan this is the beginning of a long term collaboration.

The Scuderia Ferrari One by Cabestan, is an exceptional timepiece, perfectly embodying the Scudiera Ferrari DNA. The Scuderia Ferrari One by Cabestan will only be made available to Ferrari clients.

Cabestan Nostromo – New Interpretation of the Winch Tourbillon Vertical Watch

Anchored in the segment of ultra-exclusive, revolutionary watchmaking, Geneva-based Cabestan presents Cabestan Nostromo, a new and bold design born of the boundless imagination of its creator, Jean-François Ruchonnet.

Created in collaboration with master watchmaker Eric Coudray, Cabestan Nostromo brings together, with absolute perfection, the best in technical and creative watchmaking.

The savoir-faire of the exclusive Swiss manufacture is evident in the new interpretation of the Cabestan Winch Tourbillon Vertical, this time simplified, but always with a characteristically harmonious and masculine architecture. Cabestan’s DNA is perfectly respected.

Nostromo gets its inspiration from the world of science fiction, that of the spaceship in the unforgettable film, Alien, fruit of the collective imaginations of Sir Ridley Scott and H.R. Giger. Transposed in the world of ultra-exclusive watchmaking, Cabestan Nostromo is destined to become one of the cult timepieces most admired by collectors.

Cabestan Nostromo watch

Reflecting the spirit of this incredible world, Cabestan Nostromo is housed in a sleek black case with a single crystal giving it a personality that is decidedly powerful and masculine, rich in emotion and surprises. The watchcase showcases the vertical wheels and drums along with the ingenious articulated drive shaft that transmits energy to the movement using bevel gears. The windows placed on each side of the case create transversal views of the mechanism’s amazing architecture possible as a result of the open design of the bridges.

The bridges serve not only to anchor the wheels, but also, at their extremities, they astutely wrap around the five drums: hours, minutes, seconds, power reserve and barrel. The openings that are created, coupled with a jumping hour, result in displays that are simple, clear and elegant. In addition, there is a coloured, graduated scale that indicates the remaining energy remaining on the power reserve drum out of a maximum 50 hours.

Finally, like its predecessor, this new model is equipped with four capstans, but this time one of them can be discretely unscrewed to reveal the watch’s crown.

The emotions continue on the reverse side of the timepiece. Jean-François Ruchonnet and Eric Coudray chose a sapphire back plate for Cabestan Nostromo to render visible the other clever ideas they incorporated.

The balance, inclined at 30°, is coupled with a swan neck regulator to allow minute adjustments in order to ensure extremely precise timekeeping. The force in the timepiece is thus transposed from horizontal to vertical in a completely original way by using an interesting and inventive combination of classical and retro-futuristic mechanisms.

Other spectacular innovation, as the sun sets, Cabestan Nostromo begins its nocturnal transformation. The areas inside the bridges, the windows and other surfaces of the movement are discretely covered with a thin phosphorescent coating invisible in daylight. In the dark, however, the mechanism is magically illuminated.

A subtle yellow-green light fills the space and flows around the strap creating an astonishing visual unity and a supernatural view of this prodigious timepiece. Like a spaceship illuminated against the intergalactic obscurity, Cabestan Nostromo proudly displays its innovative genius both day and night.
