ATLANTIC WATCH

Atlantic Watch SA is a Swiss watchmaking company based in Lengnau. The brand has been specialized in nautical timepieces for more than a century.

In 1888, in the Solothurn town of Bettlach, Edward Kummer laid the basis of a company, which was one day to become Atlantic Watch. Some years later the company was already employing over 700 people and has left a strong mark on the history of watchmaking in the 20th century. Since 2008, Atlantic has been based in the Bernese town of Lengnau/Longeau.

The Atlantic Brands came into being in 1888 under the name of Ed. Kummer AG, Bettlach, abbreviated to EKB. At that time aged 43, the master watchmaker had identified the huge potential for growth offered by the manufacture of watch movements and components.

Six years later, he and his partners had already set up the company called Obrecht & Co. established in Grenchen, which specialized in the production of movement-blanks. However, the authorities of Bettlach, his commune of origin, persuaded him to transfer his activities to his place of birth, in order to contribute to its development. These projects were favourably received by the inhabitants of Bettlach, so that production was able to start in 1888 in the new and imposing production site, which had just sprung up from nothing.

Thanks to his rare business skills, Eduard Kummer quickly ensured the prosperity of his business. In a few years, the number of employees increased spectacularly, from around 20 to over 700 at the beginning of the 20th century, only two decades after the company’s foundation. Until the end of the 1920s, the manufacture of watchmaking calibres and components remained the company’s basic activity. Nevertheless, the name EKB soon found its way onto pocket watches, and in a second phase, onto the dials of wrist watches.

The crisis which developed at the end of the second decade of the 20th century brought with it its share of changes. EKB experienced a difficult period, which finished with its integration in 1931 into the ASUAG (Allgemeine Schweizerische Uhrenindustrie AG). This takeover included the absorption of EKB’s movements’ division into the Ebauches SA company, which was founded in 1926, and already combined around ten movement manufacturers at the time. These changes brought about drastic staff cuts at EKB and from that moment the company transformed itself completely into a watch brand, devoted entirely to the manufacture of complete watches.

Launched in 1932, the “Atlantic” collection contained some of the first water-resistant timekeepers in watchmaking history. The collection soon became popular with the public, and was so successful that in 1952, the brand decided to adopt the name of Atlantic. From then on, the company also appeared in the commercial register under the trading name of “Atlantic Watch Ltd”.

Launched in the 1940s, the “Worldmaster” collection is another pillar that underpinned the success of the company, to the extent that today it is still one of Atlantic’s best- known lines. Apart from the avant-garde role of the company in the water-resistant timekeeper segment, Atlantic also acted as pioneer in other domains. In 1960, the Brand thus launched a remarkable innovation called “Speedswitch”.

Developed by the Brand itself, this device enabled the changing of the date in a way that was so much faster than any of the currently available systems. Indeed, a time lapse of hardly longer than five minutes was now enough to display the following day, whereas hitherto this process could last several hours. The new procedure created a sensation and attracted imitators, and is still used by many watch brands.

Since the middle of the 20th century, Atlantic has continued its rise beyond national borders. The Brand’s main clients include Scandinavia, Eastern Europe, South America and the Middle East. For almost thirty years, Atlantic was one of the most sold brands in Poland. This concentration on exports is also one of the reasons that the Brand was, and still is, known only by professionals in its domestic market.

After the quartz crisis that shook the industry during the 1970s, Atlantic changed hands again in 1983, following the merger between ASUAG and SSIH (Société Suisse pour l’Industrie Horlogère SA). However, its new owners were not able to realize the company’s potential. Since 1988, the brand has been in the hands of private investors and managed by Jürg Bohne, who is one of the shareholders.

Today, Atlantic has over 20 collections and a thousand models marketed in over 25 countries. Its current logo, comprising a sextant and an anchor, evokes the pioneer role enjoyed by the Brand in the development of water-resistant timekeepers and emphasizes the high-quality standards of its Swiss Made watches.

Atlantic Worldmaster Original 1888 Limited Edition

The Atlantic Worldmaster Original 1888 Limited Edition defies time altogether, subtly elegant, mingling tradition with modernity.

The 316L polished stainless steel case reflects the delicately cambered profile of the watch. Sober and refined, the slim, round 42mm diameter bezel surrounds a dial with a “guilloché” (engine-turned) finish and ‘soleil’ decoration, whose three versions, cream, silver or black, complement the sophistication of the case to perfection. Two skeleton hands follow their narrow semi-indexed path, where the entirely hand-mounted appliqués contribute their nickel or pink gold enhancement.

Here, time is on display clearly and legibly. Anti-reflective sapphire crystal, date window at 3 o’clock, stylized asymmetrical seconds hand at 6 o’clock and scratch-resistant crystal case back, revealing the automatic ETA 2895-2 movement with small seconds hand, bestowing on the Worldmaster Original 1888 an identity wavering between vintage and modern, and marshalling the full impact of the Lengnau watchmaker’s innovations, over its 122-year history. The Worldmaster Original 1888 watch is also available with ETA 2824-2 movement with or without COSC chronometer certification.

The Speed-Switch enabling rapid date changing, and of course the legendary water-resistance of Atlantic models, individually tested to guarantee their adequate resistance and precision down to 5 ATM, or 50 metres in the case of this model.

The brown leather strap with steel buckle rounds off the model’s sophistication.

Atlantic Worldmaster Square Mother-of-Pearl Retrograde Chronograph

Mother-of-pearl and zircons for charm and “Swiss Made” complication movement for distinction: this timekeeper with its glamorous design is a true reflection of the luxury watchmaking tradition practised by Atlantic Watch SA since 1888.

A natural, semi-precious, shimmering material, mother of pearl exploits light and brings depth and movement to the dial. Iridescent with pink or silvery-grey nuances, the choice of the model is then a function of your wardrobe or the colour of your skin. The effect is guaranteed with the mirror-polished 316L steel of the case, whose sobriety illustrates the refined classicism of the Square line.

A perfect square with 31mm sides, the case includes four bevelled profiles, perfect display surfaces to embellish the chronograph with sparkling stones. Four refined zircon baguettes “set in rails” provide an echo to the 8 stones delicately hand-mounted in the hour ring, not to mention each of the stirrup-holders, also clothed in light.

The watch houses an ETA G15.261 quartz chronograph movement. Conceived by the Manufacture to display times measured in a retrograde manner and partly counter-clockwise, the chronograph, when working, appears full of action and motion. A 5-minutes counter at 2 o’clock, a 60-minutes counter at 10 o’clock, both retrograde, a 30-seconds counter in the centre at 180 degrees and a date window at 4 o’clock: the Atlantic know-how does justice to the movement achieving full overall legibility.

The scratch-resistant, anti-reflection sapphire crystal and guarantee of water-resistance to 50 metres thanks to the screw-down case back with its 4 screw systems reflect the effort of the Brand with the sextant to leave nothing to chance on this product with strong added value.
The white leather strap (black on request) accentuates the impact of the mother-of-pearl, recalling its association with maternal values.

Atlantic Seashark Matchrace Chronograph

Atlantic Watch SA debuts the Seashark Matchrace chronograph for the competition yachting community.

Atlantic Watch SA – a brand with an evocative tradition – has been specialized in nautical timepieces for more than a century. The Swiss company can look back on a successful past and has always been considered a veritable pioneer for water-resistant watches within the industry. In 2008, Atlantic is introducing the Seashark Matchrace, a chronograph designed specifically for regatta sailing. In pursuit of ambitious targets, the watchmaker is going tight to the wind.

Grenchen-based Atlantic Watch SA is staying its course resolutely and with uncompromising vigor. The Swiss watch manufacturer is famous and globally well-positioned, in particular for its nautical timekeeping instruments. On the occasion of its 120th anniversary, Atlantic Watch SA yet again leveraged its successful heritage and now presents an ingenious timepiece: the Seashark Matchrace anniversary chronograph model.

The new model is ideal for the competition yachting community; the minute counter is equipped with color-coded 5-, 8- and 10-minute segments, allowing the skipper to tell at a glance how much time is left before the race begins. The unusual case design – reminiscent of a helm – and the windrose or compass bezel make the Seashark Matchrace the ideal instrument for any professional or leisure sailor. A further eye-catcher is the dial, decorated with a wave motif and nautical flags instead of indexes. The colorful chronograph features convincingly perfect functionality and engineering. The crown, caseback and pushers are screwed in, guaranteeing extreme water resistance up to 300 meters. The Seashark Matchrace is truly rugged.

The ample dimensions and the scratch-resistant sapphire crystal with anti-reflection coating on the inside enhance the legibility of the three subsidiary dials and the prominent hands. The stainless steel bracelet in a ship’s anchor pattern with double safety clasp is exceedingly robust. The Seashark Matchrace is equipped with an extremely precise ETA Swiss Made chronograph quartz movement.
