Alpina Alpiner Quartz Chronograph

Swiss watch brand Alpina presents a two-pusher compax chronograph with a quartz caliber. This is a new line for Alpina. Never, until now, had the Geneva-based company offered a Quartz Chronograph version of its famous Alpiner. It is a new offering that follows in the footsteps of the legendary Alpiner4, born in 1938 – a watch that is antimagnetic, shock-resistant, water-resistant and made of stainless steel.

Alpina Alpiner Quartz Chronograph

Strengthened by this heritage, the three new Alpiner Quartz Chronograph timepieces feature a large 42 mm steel case, luminescent hour and minute hands (central as well as for the chronograph), and a seconds counter at 3 o’clock with a red hand, recalling the sporty vocation of the piece.

Alpina Alpiner Quartz Chronograph

As always, the discreet Alpina logo, symbol of the Alpine summits, stands out in the form of a red triangle as a counterweight to the central chronograph hand.

Alpina Alpiner Quartz Chronograph

As for the movement, the choice of a quartz calibre offers the new Alpiner Quartz Chronograph some exclusive advantages. The first: an exceptional longevity, with an autonomy of four and a half years, depending on its usage.

Alpina Alpiner Quartz Chronograph

Secondly, quartz offers almost total resistance to shocks. The AL-373 calibre is the latest quartz movement to be integrated into Alpina’s collections. As such, it benefits from the company’s long experience in this field, guaranteeing a chronometric precision far superior to that of a mechanical movement, for a fraction of its price. Finally, this movement offers a date at 6 o’clock.

Alpina AlpinerX Smart Outdoors Limited Edition

To celebrate the renewal of its partnership with the Freeride World Tour for the fourth consecutive year in 2021, Swiss watch brand Alpina revealed an exclusive AlpinerX Smart Outdoors limited edition delivered with a strap made of recycled material from Alpina’s advertising banner from the Freeride World Tour 2020.

Last November, Alpina renewed its partnership with the Freeride World Tour in 2021 for the fourth year running. Sharing the same values and passion for adventure, Alpina and the Freeride World Tour have been working together since 2018, helping freeride athletes achieve their goal of mastering some of the most challenging lines the mountains have to offer.

Alpina AlpinerX Smart Outdoors Limited Edition

As the official partner of the Freeride World Tour, Alpina is also directly supporting three Freeride World Tour competitors, namely the French athletes Juliette Willmann and Victor De Le Rue and the Italian Markus Eder. This year, the competition started in Andorra from February 19th to 26th, before continuing in Fieberbrunn, Austria and in Verbier, Switzerland.

Alpina AlpinerX Smart Outdoors Limited Edition

In 2021, to celebrate their partnership, Alpina and the Freeride World Tour have designed an exclusive AlpinerX Alive Smart Outdoors limited edition of 40 pieces.

Alpina AlpinerX Smart Outdoors Limited Edition

The watch is delivered with an extra strap made of recycled plastic from Alpina’s advertising banner from the Freeride World Tour 2020, which was located at the entrance of the Verbier resort. Traditionally, the final round of the Freeride World Tour takes place in the Swiss ski resort, on one of the world’s most difficult venues to ride, the Bec des Rosses. Not to waste any material, Alpina decided to use in the most effective way: cutting the advertising banner into slices to create 40 unique straps to reinforce this limited edition’s attachment to freeride.

Alpina AlpinerX Smart Outdoors Limited Edition

This exclusive Freeride World Tour 2021 timepiece is marked by the official Freeride World Tour logo at 2 o’clock, embellishing a black mat finishing dial accompanied by luminous red hands and silver indexes. Enhanced by a navy blue fibre glass case with a 360° bi-directional turning compass bezel, this model comes with a red rubber strap.

Alpina AlpinerX Smart Outdoors Limited Edition

Conceived for outdoor enthusiasts, this model uses the dedicated AlpinerX companion application, available for iPhone or Android which tracks the heart rate, measures altitude, pressure, has a GPS function and sends data to the watch in real time to help take your performance to the next level.

Alpina AlpinerX Alive

Launched on May 3rd, the Alpiner X Alive is now in store. The six models embody an alternative vision of the connected watch by Alpina: urban, sporty and with high added value in terms of technology. Combining the beauty of traditional watchmaking with an AMOLED digital screen, it presents a detailed overview of the wearer’s athletic performance and lifestyle. Features of this new Swiss Made smartwatch include: GPS, heart rate monitoring, a chronograph and a personalised training programme.

Alpina AlpinerX Alive

Dedicated to men, this versatile timepiece with its sophisticated horological design and advanced capabilities adapts to any environment. By launching six models at the same time, Alpina wants to provide sporty urbanites with the best option for them, whether they prefer the modern, sporty or classic look.

Alpina AlpinerX Alive

In 2015, Alpina was already the first brand to launch a Swiss Made connected watch, the now famous Horological Smartwatch. Design, development, production, assembly, control: Alpina succeeded in creating a connected, intelligent watch that fully satisfied the Swiss Made criteria.

Each model then relies on a common driving force, a concentration of advanced technology that Alpina has been patiently developing since 2015, over generations of smartwatches. The current version is the most advanced with pioneering work carried out on its software and embedded sensors.

This new smart watch comes with two major technological breakthroughs. Firstly, heart rate monitoring, achieved by integrating the very latest Philips Wearable Sensing sensors. Your pulse is taken from your wrist and measured around every 10 seconds in “Workout” (exercise) mode. Special notifications are also issued if the AlpinerX Alive detects an abnormal heart beat.

Alpina AlpinerX Alive

Secondly, integrated GPS. This new functionality records your run or walk, combining the information with your heart rate so that it can be analysed using the Alpina Smartwatch app for iOs and Android. To help ensure each session takes place in optimum conditions, the AlpinerX Alive even shows you the weather!

The Dynamic Coach from Alpina is designed to help balance out your activity level when no two days are alike. The personal assistant suggests a range of exercises in relation to your performance, accompanied by recommendations for improving your daily life and muscle tone, as you’ll discover by using the app each day.

This personal assistant relies on measuring a large number of variables that are analysed in real time: sleep quality, heart rate measures, activity tracker, etc.

Alpina AlpinerX Alive

To have the watch display all this information on its new high-resolution AMOLED touch screen, simply touch the screen or press the crown. The latter also allows you to view the last five messages received through selected apps, in addition to call, message and email notifications.

Alpina AlpinerX Alive

Featuring two broad hands hovering over a digital screen, the stylish design reinforces Alpina’s commitment to quality Swiss Made watches embracing the best smart technology around. The latter relies on the AL-284 movement developed internally, equipped with a rechargeable battery and offering an average seven days’ autonomy depending on usage. In addition to its intelligent functions, it provides perfect synchronisation of the time and date, a second time zone and a chronograph.

Alpina AlpinerX Alive

Setting the tone, straps for the new AlpinerX Alive come in blue, red, grey, brown and beige. Everyone can get the look they want to suit their personal preference: neo-vintage, ultra-sporty or casual chic. The mixing and matching of hands, dials and straps allows for the most complementary combinations.

Alpina AlpinerX Alive

The matte finish dial is enhanced by luminescent hands and index hour markers (white), index hour markers between 4 o’clock and 8 o’clock, while large Arabic numerals designate 12 o’clock, 3 o’clock and 9 o’clock. At 12 o’clock, you’ll find the Alpina symbol, a white triangle on the bezel representing the Alpine peaks.

With regards to materials, you can choose between rubber and topstitched calfskin straps. The bidirectional bezel is available in black PVD coated steel or natural steel. The 45 mm fibreglass case is as light as it is durable. Finally, the AlpinerX Alive is water-resistant to 100 metres and like any Swiss Made watch, topped with a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal.

Alpina AlpinerX Alive

Now, GPS and Bluetooth have an antenna each. The Bluetooth antenna, which points downwards, is largely controlled by Alpina. The GPS antenna, which points upwards, is much longer. The longer the antenna, the more precise it is… but the more sensitive it is too. So Alpina created a bespoke antenna, which it made as long as possible but in perfect isolation, allowing the AlpinerX Alive to pick up at least nine satellites. It is a complex development, especially with the touch screen; this seemingly commonplace technology has presented its share of challenges in terms of dial / touchpad distance, insulation with the bezel, water-resistance, etc.

Alpina AlpinerX Alive

For the heart rate sensor, a bespoke lens was created to go on the back of the watch. Too thick and it affected the heart rate measurement. Too thin and it became too fragile to be water-resistant. Philips has a strong presence in the medical industry, but had never had to focus so keenly on miniaturisation and precision. Together, it took Alpina (in Switzerland) and Philips (in Holland) nearly two years to develop the sensor for the AL-284 caliber. It was also necessary to develop a case and a strap that kept the sensor next to the skin at all times.

Alpina AlpinerX Alive

Finally, with the MMT team (Manufacture Modules Technologies SA), Alpina developed exclusive algorithms (such as the Workout mode), while drastically reducing power use – especially that of the heart rate monitor – so as to achieve one weeks’ autonomy, which is unprecedented for this type of product.

Alpina Startimer Pilot Heritage Automatic Limited Edition (Reference AL-525BBG4SH6)

For over 50 years Alpina is an official supplier to various air forces. The company has specialised in meeting the requirements of pilots at work by delivering steadfast resistance, unfailing precision and perfect readability. This year, the Swiss watch brand presents the new limited edition Startimer Pilot Heritage Automatic with a new design and a new case, in addition to its famous hunter case-back.

Alpina Startimer Pilot Heritage Automatic Limited Edition watch

The Startimer Pilot Heritage is well-known among collectors. In 2015, Alpina paid glorious tribute to the heroes of aviation with its cult manual winding 50 mm Startimer Pilot Heritage watch, limited to 1,883 pieces. It came complete with a hunter case-back, an historic hinged case back that opened with a click to reveal the Swiss Made mechanics of the calibre inside.

Alpina Startimer Pilot Heritage Automatic Limited Edition watch caseback view

The new Startimer Pilot Heritage Automatic watch comes in an ultra-resistant 44 mm steel case. Thanks to this new limited edition of 1,883 pieces, Alpina is returning to the origins of large diameter pilot watches.

Alpina Startimer Pilot Heritage Automatic Limited Edition watch

Presented against matte black, the hours and minutes stretch out in luminescent beige, carefully chosen to replicate the shade that was used on vintage dials. Large hand-polished steel hands in the same luminescent shade hover over a 24-hour counter designed with long-haul flight in mind.

Alpina Startimer Pilot Heritage Automatic Limited Edition watch

Collectors are bound to appreciate the vintage touches that reveal just how much care Alpina took in drawing on vintage watches. Firstly, the “Alpina” logo features in the original font used by the Geneva-based brand founded in 1883.

Alpina Startimer Pilot Heritage Automatic Limited Edition watch

Then, there is the legendary Alpina triangle, symbolic of the Swiss peaks. Located at 12 o’clock, it helps differentiate between “II” and “I”, 11 o’clock and 1 o’clock respectively, during flights. The watch is also distinguished by the red counterbalance on the large seconds hand, hovering over the date display at 3 o’clock.

Alpina Startimer Pilot Heritage Automatic Limited Edition watch

As for the case, the hunter case-back makes its big return. Decorated with a delicate perlage pattern, it reveals the sapphire crystal through which the Swiss Made AL-525 movement can be seen, a high frequency calibre oscillating at 28,800 beats per hour.

Alpina Startimer Pilot Heritage Automatic Limited Edition watch

The Brand has also revived the grooved design for the crown at 3 o’clock, making it easier to grip, even when wearing gloves.

Finally, the brown calfskin strap is embellished with topstitching in the same vintage beige as the hands. As the watch develops a patina over the years, each piece takes on a life unique to its owner.

Proven technology with intelligent and customisable features is housed for the first time within Alpina’s famous sports watch for women, the Comtesse. This timepiece boasts a discreet digital display at 6 o’clock that shows a set of customizable notifications on demand.

With the AlpinerX Comtesse Glacier, the brand founded in 1883 has applied the latest smart technology to a timeless classic in the form of a feminine and sporty chic watch. Limited to 500 timepieces, the watch is exclusively available online.

Alpina AlpinerX Comtesse Glacier smart watch for women

Algorithms embedded in the AlpinerX Comtesse Glacier allow for some seriously smart features, like your recommended hours of sleep based on previous nights, activity level required to achieve your goal weight, suggested sports to play, alerts to get you moving or encourage you to relax (depending on your heart rate) and plenty more besides. All these features are then reviewed, analysed and collated within the dedicated Alpina Smartwatch app, available for free download and compatible with iOSand Android.

Alpina chose quartz technology for its AlpinerX Comtesse Glacier calibre. This means that unlike nearly all smartwatches with lithium-ion batteries, the AlpinerX Comtesse Glacier’s battery is rechargeable and offers up to seven days of autonomy, depending on use.

Alpina AlpinerX Comtesse Glacier smart watch for women

By integrating the monitor developed by Philips Wearable Sensing, the user’s heart rate can now be taken straight from the wrist for improved accuracy and measured in the moment. In standard mode, the AlpinerX Comtesse Glacier measures the pulse rate every minute. In “Workout” (exercise) mode, it’s roughly every 10 seconds.

The same sensor can also be used to accurately monitor your activity, health and physical fitness. It uses an algorithm that extracts and processes this data, taking into account body movement and ambient light to provide very accurate results.

Alpina AlpinerX Comtesse Glacier smart watch for women

At first glance, there is almost nothing to differentiate this Comtesse from another, given its curvaceous 36.5 mm steel case in different shades with alternating polished and satin-finished surfaces, steel strap supplemented by a blue rubber strap and a delicate navy blue dial adorned with nine diamonds. This stylish and elegant piece is ideal for everyday wear.

One tap on the crown and the ingenious AlpinerX Comtesse Glacier momentarily reveals selected information on the digital display positioned at 6 o’clock, such as heart rate, breathing exercises, activity tracker, notifications, weather, second time zone and chronograph, among others. Lightly press the crown to switch from one function to another. It is simple, intuitive and instant. As soon as you have looked at the desired information, the digital screen returns to standby mode and is once more invisible to the naked eye.

Alpina AlpinerX Comtesse Glacier smart watch for women

An everyday companion, the AlpinerX Comtesse Glacier can be configured down to the smallest detail. Even the order in which notifications are displayed can be customised. More than just an accessory, this timepiece is an everyday companion, worn on the wrist.

All the notifications offered by the AlpinerX Comtesse Glacier are customisable and connected to most of the popular apps: Mail, Messages, Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, Instagram, Snapchat, LinkedIn, WeChat, Viber, Uber, KakaoTalk, Pinterest and Spotify.

Alpina Startimer Pilot Automatic 40 mm

Swiss watch brand Alpina expands its Startimer collection by adding a new 40mm watch. The Startimer Pilot Automatic model, which belongs to this flagship Alpina collection, now comes in a new 40 mm diameter version, already on sale in five readily available references.

Alpina Startimer Pilot Automatic 40 mm watch collection

Identified by a 44 mm rose gold-plated or PVD coated steel case within which features a date counter and three hands, the Startimer Pilot Automatic range has now had its characteristic features replicated in a new 40 mm diameter watch. Being more restrained, the latter opens up new prospects for the Startimer collection.

Alpina Startimer Pilot Automatic 40 mm watch collection

Being more universal, it has also become unisex; many women already wear 40 mm watches every day, a diameter long adopted by men, but which now benefits them both. For these new 40 mm models, Alpina has preserved the essence of the Startimer Pilot Automatic range: open dials with large luminescent hands for telling the time at night, a date display at 3 o’clock and a long seconds-hand sweeping over a timer with index markers every 5 minutes.

Alpina Startimer Pilot Automatic 40 mm watch collection

In this new timepiece, index hour markers at 12 and 6 o’clock have been replaced by luminescent horizontal indexes that are easier to distinguish, especially when flying at night, with “II” and “I” referring to 11 o’clock and 1 o’clock respectively. Midday always features the vertical red triangle, the Brand’s Alpine symbol, which can also be found at the end of the seconds hand. Finally, the screw-down crown at 3 o’clock has kept its delicate ridges for improved grip.

Alpina Startimer Pilot Automatic 40 mm watch collection

As for the movement, Alpina remains faithful to its mechanical self-winding AL-525 calibre, which promises a power reserve of 38 hours, protected by a steel case-back engraved with Alpine peaks and offering guaranteed water resistance to 100 metres.

Alpina Startimer Pilot Automatic 40 mm caseback

In response to demand from the many collectors that have helped make the Startimer Pilot Automatic so successful, the Brand has revived the five iconic designs that forged the legend: a rose gold-plated case with a grey dial and a brown calfskin leather strap, two steel versions with “Navy Blue” or white dial on a black calfskin leather strap, plus one in PVD coated steel on a black calfskin leather strap.

Alpina Startimer Pilot Automatic 40 mm

The final design combines a rose gold-plated case with “Navy Blue” dial on a black calfskin leather strap. This model perfectly captures the “aeronautical” spirit of the Startimer, drawing on the “nautical” bronze tones of the on-board fittings and naval blue, here replicated in the “aero” fuselage of the Startimer.

These five new pieces are available now, starting at 895 euros (recommended retail price).

Each piece displays its Alpina DNA through the Maison’s iconic red triangle on the seconds hand counterbalance, as well as at 12 o’clock on the unidirectional bezel and on the dial. On the caseback, you’ll find an engraving specific to Alpina diving watches, incorporating Alpine peaks and the trident of the deep sea.

Alpina Seastrong Diver Comtesse Quartz

The AL-240 quartz calibre will ensure the watch keeps perfectly accurate time (for nearly four years) and also shows the date, revealed through a window at 3 o’clock. As discreet as it is resilient and versatile, the new Seastrong Diver Comtesse Quartz features an impressively slim 34 mm steel case and scratch-resistant sapphire crystal.

Alpina Seastrong Diver Gyre Automatic Limited Edition

Swiss watch brand Alpina pledges to protect the oceans by presenting new Seastrong Diver Gyre Automatic line to support the World Ocean Day (on June 8th, 2020). On this occasion, the Brand goes even further by announcing its partnership with the start-up Gyre Watch, which is responsible for sourcing the recycled material, and with Surfrider Foundation Europe, a non-governmental organisation which has become a reference in the fight for the preservation of the ocean and its users.

Alpina Seastrong Diver Gyre Automatic Limited Edition

For the first time in the history of Alpina, the Seastrong Diver Gyre Automatic range features a case comprised of 70% plastic debris derived from fishing nets collected in the Indian Ocean. To ensure its durability, it has been strengthened with 30% fibreglass.

This line as well as its name draws their inspiration from the encounter between Alpina and the watch journalist Bernard Werk, in the Netherlands, three years ago. Personally involved in the preservation of the oceans, he created the concept as well as the name “GYRE”, in reference to these giant circular ocean currents – and consisting in reusing the ghost fishing nets from the Indian Ocean. In order to protect an environment dear to Alpina as well as to GYRE-founders Bernard Werk and Jorrit Niels, the Seastrong Diver Gyre Automatic line is the beginning of a long-term collaboration between Gyre Watch and the Maison.

Alpina Seastrong Diver Gyre Automatic Limited Edition

It is also the first time that this eco-responsible blend has complied with EU REACH legislation (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals). Its aim is to control the use of chemical substances in order to improve the protection of human health and the environment, while promoting a high level of innovation – objectives perfectly expressed by the new Seastrong Diver Gyre Automatic range.

The Seastrong Diver Gyre Automatic range now comprises five variations, including: three men’s models (44 mm) and two ladies’s models (36 mm). They share three dial finishes evoking the reflections of the sea, in blue shades, turquoise and dyed mother-of-pearl, complete with luminescent hands. The seconds hand is finished with the famous triangle from the Alpina logo, which also features as an index hour marker at 12 o’clock.

Alpina Seastrong Diver Gyre Automatic Limited Edition

Completing the look are three two-tone NATO style straps made from recycled plastic bottles. In addition, Alpina is offering a black vegetable leather strap comprised of recycled apple waste with every men’s model.

Each model is powered by the AL-525 automatic movement featuring three hands and the date, housed in a black composite case (70% PA6, 30% fibreglass) and presenting a unidirectional bezel that recalls the nautical pedigree of the Seastrong collection. Each piece is certified water-resistant to 300 m.

Alpina Seastrong Diver Gyre Automatic Limited Edition

These timepieces will be made in strictly limited series of 1,883 pieces each, in reference to the year that Alpina was created. They will be presented in an exclusive and eco-friendly gift set comprising an inner box of FSC Mix paper housing a case made entirely from recycled plastic (ABS) with lining made from recycled plastic bottles (rPET). Completing this gift set will be a single leaflet (guarantee and certificate of authenticity) printed on FSC Recycled paper.

Alpina Seastrong Diver Gyre Automatic Limited Edition

To reduce its ecological footprint further still, Alpina has also opted for a paperless user manual, accessible via a QR code. The latter will direct buyers to a dedicated site presenting the concept behind their watch and its materials, as well as the instruction and maintenance manual.

Alpina Seastrong Diver Gyre Automatic Limited Edition

For the launch of these new products, Alpina has chosen to support Surfrider Foundation Europe. Created in 1990, in France (Biarritz), by a group of surfers wishing to defend their playground, the Foundation bears the citizen mobilization for the protection of the ocean and the coast in its DNA. In total adequacy with these values of sharing and respect between humans and nature, Alpina became a partner of this international non-governmental and environmental non-profit organization, recognized for its fight led daily by nearly 2000 volunteers across 12 European countries.

Gyre Watch has been founded in The Netherlands in 2017 with the aim to produce a watch made out of recycled ocean plastic. After two and half years they found the solution by using recycling ghost fishing nets, saved from the Indian Ocean. Local fishermen collect the fishing nets from the sea and deliver them to the recycler. For this they receive a fee, which means Gyre also contributes to the local economy. The nets are then cleaned and made into pellets for the watch case.

Alpina Watches welcomes Markus Eder as a new member of its “Alpinists” team

Swiss watch brand Alpina has appointed Italian skier Markus Eder, winner of the 2019 Freeride World Tour, as a new Alpina Watches ambassador, the latest member of the “Alpinists” team.

Considered a role model in the universe of freeride, Markus Eder is a 29-year-old skier from South Tyrol, Italy.

Born on November 30, 1990, in Brunico, Markus Eder grew up skiing in Klausberg, an Italian small resort near the Austrian border. Having made his debut as a ski racer, he was bound to be attracted by the creativity and fun freestyle skiing had to offer and began to focus on this discipline in 2005.

His flair combined with his artistic and competitive personality allowed him to rapidly break out onto the European stage, and further become a renowned international freestyler after winning the Nine Knights contest in Nebelhorn, Germany, in 2010. As a park skier, Markus Eder won the Nine Knights in 2010, in the SFR Freestyle Tour in 2011 and competed in the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia (15th in qualifications).

In 2011, Markus Eder took part in a backcountry competition for the first time at the Red Bull Linecatcher contest and won the second place. Having discovered the joys of freeriding and exploring mountains, this experience opened new perspectives in Eder’s skiing career.

From this moment on, Markus was driven by the ambition to excel both in freestyle and freeride disciplines and becoming the first skier to compete at the Freeride World Tour and at the biggest freestyle events.

His vision to stand out among his freeride competitors was based on the reinterpretation of steep lines using his freestyle background as an advantage. Markus won the World Heli Challenge in 2012 and took second overall in 2018 Freeride World Tour before being crowned Freeride World Tour Champion in 2019, the most prestigious title a big-mountain rider could earn.

Markus Eder starring in five Matchstick Productions (MSP Films) films from 2014 to 2018 became another turning point in his career. Two of these movies, Days of My Youth and Drop Everything, were filmed in Alaska – Drop Everything was also partially shot in Canada -, giving him the opportunity to demonstrate his technical prowess on the Far North steep lines.

Besides working on projects with third parties, Markus has always loved to ideate, produce and distribute his own personal projects like Night at the Opera, Alptopia and My playground, in which he can drive his message in a personal and artistic way.

In 2020, Markus decided to step back from competitive skiing to focus on a personal project. However, he competed in the Fieberbrunn 2020 Freeride World Tour stop as a Wildcard, in Austria, on Sunday March 8. A destination dear to his heart, Markus Eder won the Fieberbrunn stop in 2019, realising his best performance.

Since 2016, Alpina has been the official Timekeeper of the Freeride World Tour, an annually toured series of events in which the best freeskiers and snowboard freeriders in the world compete for individual event wins, as well as the overall title of Freeride World Champion in their respective genders and disciplines.

The events take place on what’s commonly referred to as “backcountry”, “big mountain” or “extreme” terrain – essentially ungroomed powder snow on dangerously steep, mountainous slopes – across the world’s most renowned ski resorts and legendary alpine faces.

FWT Management SA, based in Lutry/Lausanne-Switzerland, is organizing world-class sports events in mountain resorts and regions since 1996. Founder of “Verbier Xtreme”, iconic event in freeride skiing & snowboarding, FWT Management SA, has taken in 2008 this stand alone event to create several Series of international freeride competitions totaling over 150 events around the globe for professional, amateur and junior riders.

FWT Management SA is the exclusive owner and organizer of the following Series : Freeride World Tour (FWT), Freeride World Qualifier (FWQ), Freeride Junior Tour (FJT), Freeride Junior World Championship (FJWC) and a Freeride Skiing Team Competition (Skiers Cup) with events taking place in Europe, North America, South America, Asia and Oceania.

Alpina Alpiner Quartz GMT

The existing Alpiner Quartz range, launched in 2019, has been updated to include three new models, each featuring a GMT function in the form of a central hand alongside the hour, minutes, seconds and date displays. With two choices of dial colour and bracelet, the Alpiner Quartz GMT is available to purchase from 895 Euros.

In 1933, exactly 50 years after Alpina was founded, the fledgling Swiss company launched its now legendary design, the “Block Uhr”. With its anti-magnetic, anti-shock and water-resistant qualities and stainless steel case, it was more than a simple watch. Indeed, it established the basic principles of the sports watch. The Alpina 4 collection, created in 1938, incorporated elements that are now globally recognised, some 80 years on, as the essential features of an “outdoor” watch.

Alpina Alpiner Quartz GMT

The latest Alpiner Quartz GMT follows in the footsteps of its sporting predecessors. Its quartz technology gives it almost 4 years of precision time-keeping and also ensures that Alpina’s authentic Swiss-made timepieces are highly affordable without sacrificing the technology or finishes for which the brand is famous.

The introduction of these three new models with GMT function further enhances the value of the Alpiner Quartz collection.

Like all authentic sports watches, the new Alpiner Quartz GMT has a firm focus on legibility and performance. The large central red pointer keeps track of the domestic time by means of the 24-hour increments engraved on the bezel. The pointer can be moved forwards or backwards, allowing you to adjust to local time in just a few seconds.

Alpina Alpiner Quartz GMT watch

The Alpiner Quartz GMT’s colour-coded bezel provides a simple and intuitive way to distinguish between day and night, removing the need for a separate day/night display which would impair the clean lines of the dial.

The date display has also moved from 6 o’clock to 3 o’clock, thus ensuring that the Alpiner Quartz GMT retains the aesthetic balance and legibility of its predecessors. By tweaking these elements, the dial now has space for the Alpiner Quartz GMT’s 100-metre water resistance guarantee, a feature which makes the watch ideally suited to nautical and marine activities.

In respect of the casing, the new Alpiner Quartz GMT upholds the Swiss-made quality that has been synonymous with Alpina for more than 135 years. The elegant 42-mm stainless steel case is available in a satin or polished finish with a bevelled body, screw-retained crown, sapphire crystal and a full back engraved with a depiction of the Alps, recalling the company’s origins. There are two different dial options: anthracite grey (with steel bracelet) or navy blue (with perforated leather strap or steel bracelet).

Alpina Alpiner Comtesse Sport Quartz

The new Alpiner Comtesse Sport Quartz from Alpina is the latest watch in a long evolution. The Alpina brand, the experts in Alpine-inspired watches, was founded in 1883.

Some years later, in the 1920s, it launched its first ladies’ collection, in a move that was way ahead of its time. Unveiled in 1963, the Alpiner Comtesse collection combined the worlds of Alpine sport and the elegant timepieces of yesteryear.

The new Alpiner Comtesse Sport Quartz now brings this bold union up to date with a decidedly contemporary take on the watch. Firmly anchored in the new millennium, the Alpiner Comtesse Sport Quartz fuses the strong, elegant lines of its forebears with the very latest in Quartz technology to provide almost four years of absolute precision.

Alpina Alpiner Comtesse Sport Quartz watch collection 2020

This new quartz collection completes the range of automatic watches which was launched in 2015 and offers proven reliability at an exceptionally affordable price: starting at 695 Euros.

Its sporty lines, based on the Avalanche Extreme collection (2011), can now be seen on three steel cases, each with a diameter of 36.5 mm. The first model evokes the Alpine glaciers that provided the inspiration for Alpina – a steel bracelet and bezel and a silver dial, index and hands, with the striking red triangle of Alpina’s logo recalling the summits of its Alpine origins.

Alpina Alpiner Comtesse Sport Quartz watch collection 2020

The second model features the famous blue Alpina hue. This colour way, shifting subtly between blue and turquoise depending on the light, has become synonymous with the brand. It covers the bezel and the dial, contrasting perfectly with the white Arabic numerals and ensuring excellent legibility; a factor of paramount importance for sports watches.

The third model is the most radical, with its black bracelet, dial and bezel. As with previous models, the markings on the dial are studded with 8 diamonds.

Alpina Alpiner Comtesse Sport Quartz watch collection 2020

Perfectly designed for everyday life, the large luminescent hands and the calendar date at 6 o’clock add the finishing touches to the exceptional, subtle beauty of the Alpiner Comtesse Sport Quartz.

The engraved steel case with its depiction of Alpine summits guarantees water resistance up to 60 m. Each timepiece is securely finished with a flexible, durable steel bracelet to fit the most delicate or most adventurous of wrists.

About the Freeride World Tour (FWT)

The Freeride World Tour is an annual series of freeride competitions, bringing together the world’s very best skiers and snowboarders for a line-up of individual competitions that give athletes a chance at winning the freeride world championship title in their respective categories. From backcountry and big mountain to extreme events, the competitions take place on dizzyingly precipitous mountain sides, in lush powder snow.

The first edition of the official Freeride World Tour competitions was held in 2008. It was originally named XtremeVerbier, a competition launched in 1996 and initially open to snowboarders exclusively. In 2004, the event was opened up to include skiers. For the 2013 season, the Freeride World Tour merged with the Freeskiing World Tour and The North Face Masters of Snowboarding, condensing the three events into a single elite world championship.

Having learnt to ski at an incredibly young age, she always knew she wanted to become a professional skier, and initially focused on downhill skiing. After a good few years competing, she found herself drawn to freeriding.

Having set her sights on the Freeride World Tour, the road that lay ahead was a long and twisting one for Juliette: but this born competitor never gave up on her dream of making it to the holy grail of freeriding. She kick-started her first real season as a freeriding competitor in 2016, and much to her surprise and delight, she came second in the European rankings. With her head spinning from her success, the following year she aimed higher than ever before – only to find herself held back by a misfortune double injury that put her out of action for a year.

In 2018, she was back – this time stronger than ever before. She came first in the Freeride World Qualifier, snagging herself a ticket to 2019’s Freeride World Tour.
At her first FWT season, she glided in to a respectable seventh place in the overall rankings, hinting at a fantastic 2020 season to come.

About Victor De le Rue

French athlete Victor made his snowboarding competition début early on, kicking off with boardercross and freestyle. Passionate and committed, Victor emerged as the French Junior Champion in boardercross, slopestyle and halfpipe. At the tender age of eighteen, he was ranked fourth in the World Cup. Despite these successes, he found himself torn by another dream: to make films. He soon decided to follow his heart, and turned his attentions to filming. Thanks to his new-found medium Victor thrived, and began expressing his passion for freestyle and adventure.

He was voted Best French Rider in 2012, 2013 and 2014, and named Rider of the Year 2015 by Snowboarder magazine. In 2019, he set himself a fresh challenge: to take part in the Freeride World Tour for the very first time. Having always been an ardent advocate of reinvention, progression and pushing at your personal boundaries, Victor came top of the overall rankings at the FWT, securing the World Champion title in his category. As well as excelling in his discipline, Victor is a multi-faceted athlete who also loves freestyle snowboarding, rock-climbing and paragliding – sometimes all at the same time!

About Hugo Hoff

Hugo is a 20-year-old freerider from Serre-Chevalier who started off with downhill skiing.

Upon turning sixteen, he began soul-searching and realised that he felt a yearning for wider, open spaces and a new challenge. He decided to try his hand at freeride skiing, and joined the Freeski Academy at Les Arcs.

He trained tirelessly, pouring heart and soul into honing the tough, competitive mindset this sport requires, doing everything in his power to reach the standard set by the very best riders in his age group – despite a handful of injuries and forced rest periods. In 2017, he finished joint-first in the Freeride Junior Tour’s Europe/Oceania division, before scooping up first place at the French Freeride Junior Les Arcs 3, another first-place medal at the Nendaz Freeride Junior 3, and finishing second in the Freeride Junior Verbier 3.

In 2019, Hugo came fourth at the Freeride World Qualifier, and now has his sights set on winning himself a ticket to the Freeride World Tour for the 2020 season. Hugo may still be a young up-and-coming athlete, but he is most definitely a rising star destined to join the greats.

Since 2003 the Red Bull Air race has been taking place all around the world, bringing excitement to aviators and racing fans alike with more than 90 races in total.

Alpina Startimer Pilot Heritage Chronograph

Alpina unveils the first chronograph from its Startimer Pilot Heritage collection. The complication uses a La Joux-Perret calibre, which offers over 40% more power reserve.

Alpina’s aeronautical-inspired Startimer collection offers aviation enthusiasts timepieces that correspond with the discipline’s demanding standards: robust, legible and practical with resolutely contemporary aesthetics.

This iconic Alpina family is now embarking on a new chapter. Drawing on the brand’s history, for the first time the Startimer Pilot Heritage has been fitted with a single-push-piece chronograph based on a movement designed by La Joux-Perret.

Alpina Startimer Pilot Heritage Chronograph

Until now, the Startimer Pilot Heritage was a model particularly appreciated by keen travellers given its date and second time zone. Available in four versions in blue, grey and bronze, the piece is characterised by its unique case within the Startimer collection, a clever compromise between a cushion-shaped case and the famous “Bullhead” shape, a design that ranks among the finest motorsport pieces.

The new Startimer Pilot Heritage Chronograph is returning to the essence of the sports watch invented by Alpina in 1883. The Startimer Pilot Heritage’s iconic case is solely fitted with a chronograph, the ultimate complication for all lovers of high-precision mechanical sports pieces.

Alpina Startimer Pilot Heritage Chronograph

This bicompax chronograph measures short time intervals (30 minutes) thanks to the AL-727 calibre, which oscillates at a high frequency of 4 Hz (28,800 vib/h) to ensure accuracy and shock-resistance, two cornerstones of the Alpina spirit. This new Startimer movement also offers a 55-hour power reserve: almost 45% more than its predecessor. Last but not least, in the purest historical chronograph tradition, it has a single pushpiece, just like the first Alpina sport chronographs almost a century ago.

Alpina Startimer Pilot Heritage Chronograph

The new Startimer Pilot Heritage Chronograph is currently available in three versions: pale grey and anthracite for an understated modern spirit, blue and grey for a young and dynamic look, and blue and grey with red hands for a sporty, racing style.

Each variation offers the same standard of Alpina’s beloved fine Swiss watchmaking finishes, with a case that is polished (on the sides) and satin-finished (on top), circular guilloché counters for improved light diffusion, hour and minute hands featuring Super-LumiNova for visibility in all light conditions, and a screw-down crown and case back for guaranteed water resistance up to 100 metres.

Alpina Seastrong Diver Heritage New Models (Reference AL-525BR4H4 and Reference AL-525BRC4H4)

Two new Alpina Seastrong Diver Heritage timepieces complete the collection after the successful introduction of the first re-interpretations.

When the first Alpina 10 Super Compressor diving watch was introduced in 1969 it featured two crowns, one of which was used to control the internal rotating bezel that measured elapsed time through a 1-60 min scale. The ‘Seastrong’ was water resistant up to 200m, anti-magnetic and had the characteristic super-compressor case. To pay tribute to this historical collection Alpina has launched since 2016 the “Seastrong Diver Heritage”.

More than a replica, this is a modern interpretation of pure Swiss watchmaking classic aesthetics and a corner stone to any vintage diver’s watch collections.

Alpina Seastrong Diver Heritage New Models (Reference AL-525BR4H4 and Reference AL-525BRC4H4)

Adjusted to modern standards, the new Alpina Seastrong Diver Heritage bears a 42mm bronze color PVD stainless steel case with two screw-in crowns at 2 and 4 o’clock.

The top crown has a grid-like pattern and is used to adjust the rotating inner diving bezel while the bottom crown is used to set the time and date, the watch resists water pressure up to 30 bar, corresponding to a diving depth of 300 m/1000ft.

Alpina Seastrong Diver Heritage New Models (Reference AL-525BR4H4 and Reference AL-525BRC4H4)

The Alpina Seastrong Diver Heritage uses an automatic movement based on a Sellita SW 200 movement modified by Alpina and named caliber AL-525. This is a 26-jewel self-winding caliber with a 38-hour power reserve and 28,800/h frequency.

Available with an elegant brown color dial it features a brown or cream color rotating inner bezel with brown or beige markers, a date window at 4 o’clock, rose gold-plated indexes and hands with white luminous treatment.

Overall, the watch shows great accuracy and a retro look making it a timeless everyday watch.

Alpina Seastrong Diver 300 (New Edition – 2019)

The new edition of the Seastrong Diver 300 remains faithful to the distinctive design that has made the model so recognizable over the years: an oversized case with strong lines, luminous indexes and a unidirectional bezel.

Alpina Seastrong Diver 300 (New Edition - 2019)

Directly inspired from the brand’s heritage, the new Seastrong Diver 300 is in the perfect continuity of Alpina’s last century timepieces, namely the 1960s Seastrong “10”. At the time, the model was already capable of reaching depths of 200m/660ft and built to resist extreme conditions.

Alpina Seastrong Diver 300 (New Edition - 2019)

The Seastrong Diver 300 presents a brand new 44m titanium or bronze PVD coated case, with either a grey, black or navy blue 60-minute unidirectional bezel and a dark brown, grey or navy blue dial which highly contrasts with the large luminous indexes and hands. The triangle at 12 o’clock is a wink to the brand’s legendary logo.

Alpina Seastrong Diver 300 (New Edition - 2019)

Finally, the date window is featured at 3 o’clock and the screw-in crown offers an added security to sustain the timepiece’s high water-resistance while diving. The watch is delivered on a vintage leather strap with an additional rubber strap.

Alpina Seastrong Diver 300 (New Edition - 2019)

The design of the new Alpina Seastrong Diver 300 provides optimal diving-time readability and stands out thanks to its features and functional beauty, turning it into a beautiful and masculine piece to be worn in and out of the water.

Alpina Alpiner Quartz

Swiss watch brand Alpina introduces four new Alpiner Quartz timepieces to its collection.

Inspired by an Alpina automatic model from the 1950’s, the contemporary Alpiner line embodies the concept of Swissness to the fullest. It features the clean lines, essential dial design, and the intrinsic quality, reliability and finishes that distinguish the Swiss Manufacture.

After the success of its first sports watch called the “Block Uhr” in 1933, featuring a rigid and reliable steel case and a patented new type of crown, Alpina launched the concept of 4 giving birth to the first Swiss sports watch in 1938, a combination of four key characteristics that Alpina deems essential to create a sports watch: anti-magnetic, anti-shock, water-resistant and stainless.

Alpina Alpiner Quartz watch

These features are vital to the adventurous Alpina watch ambassador, ensuring high performance and reliability, tackling the entire alpine sports’ universe, from the Alps to the ocean.

Alpina Alpiner Quartz watch

The Alpiner Quartz fills the need for a classical sporty entry-level timepiece within the Alpiner collection. Quintessential expression of the brand’s sporting elegance, the sophisticated AL-240 quartz movement hosts hours, minutes, seconds and date window at 6 o’clock protected by a scratch-resistant convex sapphire crystal fixed in a 42mm diameter case and water resistance up to 100m/330ft.

Alpina Alpiner Quartz watch

Keeping its elegant and sporty design from its automatic version, this new model becomes a real value for money piece at a very accessible price point.

Alpina Alpiner Quartz watch

Three of the versions have an all stainless-steel bracelet and one a beautifully crafted brown leather strap. There is also an array of 3 dials: the iconic “glacier blue” comes with a sunray finish along with dark grey and silver which all bare hand applied silver luminova indexes.

ALPINA is named as the Official Timekeeper for the 15th edition of La Grande Odyssée Savoie Mont Blanc

Swiss watchmaker Alpina has announced its partnership with La Grande Odyssée Savoie Mont Blanc, for which it is named as the official timekeeper for the 2019 edition. Taking place from 12 to 23 January in the massifs of the French Alps, this mythic sled dog race is synonymous with high adventure, promoting a certain vision of sport, nature and respect for the environment. Sharing these values through its own alpine origins, Alpina is proud to support the 15th edition of this annual event.

The world’s most challenging international sled dog race, the Grande Odyssée Savoie Mont Blanc was started in January 2005. The mountainous topography it runs through makes it the most challenging international sled dog race in the world. The 15th edition of this annual 12 day European event is expecting over 45 mushers with their 400 canine athletes from the United States, Russia and Europe (France, Norway, Germany, Switzerland, Spain and Italy).

With a middle-distance stage course covering 400 kilometres in total, the Grande Odyssée Savoie Mont Blanc is the only race of its kind in the world. It arouses tremendous popular enthusiasm, attested by the millions of television viewers and 80,000 spectators in attendance at each edition.

Equivalent to the Tour de France in the realm of sled dog racing, the Grande Odyssée Savoie Mont Blanc brings together some of the world’s best stage race mushers (dog team drivers). Once the finish line has been crossed, they will have covered nearly 400 kilometres with a change in positive altitude of more than 15,000 metres in stages of 27 to 48 kilometres. A complete sport, mushing calls for very precise knowledge and preparation: nutrition, strength training, endurance, speed, mental stamina, but also training under all kinds of different meteorological conditions.

Commitment, technical skills, perseverance, respect for nature are all words that resonate in the Grande Odyssée Savoie Mont Blanc and that are echoed in the values of the Alpina watch brand. Originating in the Swiss Alps in 1883, Alpina has a mission to design and create watches that are both sporty and elegant, that function with the greatest possible precision and reliability in the most demanding athletic environments, such as the alpine realm. Sharing the DNA of this unique international race, it is only natural that the Alpina brand has become its official timekeeper. In this capacity, it will have the honour of presenting the winner with a watch from its new collection AlpinerX.

Equipped with five sensors, the AlpinerX measures the UV index, temperature, pressure, altitude and direction. An alliance between the sporty design of a classic Alpina watch and smart technologies, it offers a wide range of functions, visible in real time on the digital screen, divided into three categories: environment, body, time and notifications.

The first category includes functions related to nature, including an altimeter, a barometer, a compass, a UV index indicator (a first in watchmaking), a thermometer and a smart GPS connected to the application. The second category relates to the user’s well-being, in particular by activity tracking and sleep monitoring, and in this way, providing dynamic coaching and smart alarms based on these results. Finally, the time and notification category provides innumerable options for recording time, notifications, world time and Cloud connection to save data.

In classic intense black or a bold modern orange, the AlpinerX collection offers models to suit all tastes. Athletic in its 45 mm diameter, the fibreglass case (for lightweight comfort), with its engraved steel caseback, reveals a classic analogue dial, encircled by a 360° rotating compass bezel. Protected by a sapphire crystal, the dark matte finish of the face is paired with impressive luminescent white indexes. While indicating the hours and minutes, the hands, also luminescent, can spread apart on the upper portion of the dial if necessary, to reveal the information that appears when the digital dial is activated.

Water resistant to 100 metres and shock resistant, this sporty watch is finished with a rubber strap in orange, black or blue depending on the version, for the perfect consummation of the adventurous spirit of this timepiece.

Connected to Smartphone via Bluetooth BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy or low consumption Bluetooth), the AlpinerX can be used with the AlpinerX Smart Outdoors application (available on IOS and Android) to record and display the data it collects.

Conceived and assembled in Geneva, Switzerland, the AlpinerX Outdoors Smartwatch is equipped with embedded intelligence relying on the MMT-283 Swiss quartz movement that benefits from two years battery life.

Alpina AlpinerX

The Alpiner X was first introduced on Kickstarter during Baselworld and became an incredibly successful project on the digital platform. Over 3’000 customized watches were ordered, and the project collected over 1.5 million Swiss francs from backers eager to buy a unique connected outdoor smartwatch. Alpina now officially launches four models of the AlpinerX, available worldwide.

Alpina AlpinerX

With an exciting launch on the renowned crowd-funding digital platform, Alpina offered a community of backers the opportunity to influence the design and specifications of the watch. A choice of more than 10’000 color variations were available through a dedicated Watch Configurator. Upon completion of the campaign, Alpina has assembled and shipped all of the customized AlpinerX watches ordered by its community.

The campaign offered Alpina customers the chance to give their feedback about the AlpinerX and opened a dialogue between the watch brand and the public through comments, live streams and messages. The feedback collected has been incredibly fruitful and will inspire the brand’s next generation of smartwatches.

Alpina AlpinerX

The AlpinerX is the ultimate outdoor connected watch. Powered by quintuple sensors, it measures the UV index, the temperature, the altitude, the pressure and direction. An ideal fusion between a classical Alpina sports design and connected technology, the watch offers a wide panel of features while being a beautiful horological piece to wear.

The functions of the AlpinerX are split into 3 categories; Environment, Body, Time & Notification. The first will include nature-related tools such as an altimeter, a barometer, a compass, a UV index indicator, temperature measurement and a connected GPS.

Alpina AlpinerX

The second is related to the user’s well-being and will collect activity and sleep data, offer dynamic coaching based on results and smart alarms. And finally, the Time & Notification segment will bring countless time recording options, notifications, a worldtimer, data saving to a Cloud and finally a 2-year battery life.

The AlpinerX is available in a variety of four designs – this particular selection has been made thanks to the Kickstarter campaign as it highlighted the public’s colour preferences. From a classic and powerful black to a bold and modern orange, the range offers models to please everyone’s taste.

If colours are an important choice factor, the Alpiner X smartwatch truly elevates itself by its design and an unusual material: the case is made out of fiberglass. It allows its wearer to enjoy the watch anywhere, in the office or while performing intense sports activities, without being inconvenienced by a heavy timepiece.

With its beautiful curves and sporty design, the watch can easily match any lifestyle and become the ideal day-to-day companion. Moreover, the AlpinerX is an enduring watch as it is both shock-resistant as well as water-resistant – making it the perfect match for any outdoor adventure.

Alpina AlpinerX

On the dial of the smartwatch a digital screen displays all the functions available thanks to the watch’s multi-sensor-technology. A simple push on the crown will allow access to the large choice of functions while the pusher at 4 o’clock will display sub-menus. Notifications will also appear on the digital screen depending on the wearer’s preferences. Missed calls and messages, WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter and many more can all be part of the alerts set via the watch’s companion app.

The AlpinerX is to be used in relation with the AlpinerX app (compatible with iOS & Android) to record and display the data collected by the watch. Daily activities as well as sleep patterns are recorded and analyzed, enabling tips and dynamic coaching provided by the app.

All features and data are easily accessible, and the parameters of the watch can be configured directly through the app to be displayed on the AlpinerX’s digital screen. The connection between the AlpinerX watch and application is made via BLE(Bluetooth Low Energy).

The connection extensively logs the watch’s records in real time and displays them on graphs via the app or on the digital screen. All the data is stored safely in the Cloud and can be accessed via the newly released SwissConnect Cloud Portal.

ALPINA

Alpina, famous for its red triangle signature, is a fine watchmaking manufacture based in Geneva, Switzerland. Founded in 1883, Alpina’s watchmaking history spans more than 130 years. A true pioneer of the Swiss watchmaking industry, Alpina has been the source of numerous patents and innovative calibers. Alpina invented the concept of the Swiss sport watch, as we know it today, with the birth of its legendary Alpina 4 in 1938.

History Of Alpina

We look back to 1883, the founding year of the association of manufacturers and retailers of watches that evolved into Alpina. Its members called themselves affectionately the “Alpinists”, and they all shared the same target: the success of the Alpina watch.Everything started in 1883 when Gottlieb Hauser, watchmaker in Winterthur, founded the Swiss Watchmakers Corporation (“Corporation d’Horlogers Suisse”).

Gottlieb Hauser

A number of watchmakers joined to purchase watch components and organized their manufacturing. Quickly, the new concept gained acceptance. Together with qualified manufactures, the Association started to develop its own calibres and to enlarge its distribution network. Ebauches (the base of a calibre) were produced by the Alpina Ebauche Factory in Geneva, owned by Duret & Colonnaz, which played also an important role in the construction of the first Alpina calibres. Final steps in the manufacture of the calibres were performed in Bienne, the place of the head quarters of the Association as of 1890. Success was swift and representations were set up in Germany as well as in East and Northern Europe. In 1901, the name “Alpina” was registered as a trademark at the same time; it would only appear on the dials of high end watches. From the beginning, Alpina watches were manufactured with high quality components, amongst others Breguet spirals, balance wheels with gold screws and heavy gold cases.

ALPINA GLASHUTTE 1909 – 1922

In order also to participate in the German watch-manufacturing base, Alpina Union Horlogère founded the “Präcisions-Uhrenfabrik Alpina” in Glashütte in 1909. The Union’s factories were now located in Geneva, Bienne, Besançon and Glashütte. In 1912, the first Alpina Chronometer Glashütte was finalized: it was equipped with an Alpina manufactured chronometer ebauche with a Glashütte escapement instead of the typical Swiss anchor escapement.

The dial of these watches red “Präcisions- Uhrenfabrik Alpina Glashütte i.S.”. Another model was created in 1913: it was a 21’’ marine watch, which was purchased by the German navy at the time. Alpina Glashütte watches gained ground and competed directly with those of Lange & Söhne. In 1913 Lange & Söhne felt threatened and started a court case to try to stop Alpina on the ground that not all parts were manufactured in Glashütte. The court case dragged on for years but was finally proven without merit. It was dropped in favor of Alpina in 1915. Meanwhile World War I had started and had a stifling effect on the “Präcisions Uhrenfabrik Alpina” in Glashütte. Parts could hardly be send to the factory from Switzerland due to war import restrictions. Further, there were major capital flow restrictions.

THE FIRST WORLD WAR

During the First World War, the Allied Forces were obviously not pleased with business relationships between Switzerland and Germany. The Alpina Glashütte factory had experienced already major problems but also the relationships between the Swiss Alpina factories and their customers in Germany were under strong pressure. Finally in 1917, towards the end of the first World War, the Association ‘Union Horlogère’ was dissolved formally. Two separate anonymous societies were incorporated: the Union Horlogère SA in Bienne, Switzerland and the Alpina Deutsche Uhrmacher Genossenschaft G.m.b.H. in Berlin, Germany. The branch, which was in charge of Swiss members, incorporated itself as yet a third separate association in the name of “Alpina Association des Horlogers Suisses”. Activities of the companies surged dramatically after the First World War. Alpina watches were being sold with great success in 2000 retailers around Europe, from Lisbon to Copenhagen to Moscow.

HOW DID THE “UNION HORLOGÈRE” OPERATE ?

All representatives of Union Horlogère depended on the Association, which aims to sell high quality watches primarily under the Alpina brand. Each watchmaker, manufacturer or specialized shop that wanted to become a member had to apply. The Board of Directors of the Union Horlogère would study the candidature carefully and thereafter accept or reject it. One became a member after paying the entry fee. Membership allowed each representative to benefit from the purchase of Alpina watches at interesting prices as well as many other benefits described below. The Association struggled hard for its members’ interests and helped to stimulate maximum growth. The Association was a non-profit organization. Each member was guaranteed to be the only Alpina representative in his or her town with the exception if the town was large enough to support more than one representative. Members could represent other brands, but could not be member of a similar organization.

The Association fixed retail prices and members were bound to maintain the set prices to avoid unconstructive discounting. Advertising on Alpina watches was entirely paid the Association from its common funds coming from subscriptions, entry fees and subsidies calculated on suppliers’ turnover. As of 1908, the Association created a guarantee, which was valid in all shops selling Alpina watch in the Swiss network. Then in 1926, this guarantee became valid internationally. Retailers could make use of a decorator to help them realize attractive windows. The Association organized selling and technical training courses regularly. Lastly, the Association published its own newspaper informing its members on developments and novelties.

The regular Committee primarily directed the Association. The Committee would meet several times a year to review new applications, the discuss disputes between members, to determine the contents of the new catalogue, its cost, the amount of participation, etc. The main event without any doubt was the yearly Congress, a kind of mini fair for two days with a great atmosphere: Alpinists coming from all over the world were invited to discover the new products and order in advance. The Congress was a social event where members could share their problems and experiences, and also form strong long-term friendships. Alpinists formed a great family, ready to support its members during the good and the bad times.

THE ALPINA GRUEN GILDE 1929-1937

The smooth and successful operation of the Alpina Union Horlogère provoked other brands’ interest. The American brand Gruen, from Cincinnati, wished a merger with Alpina in order to use its European distribution network. In 1929, the “Alpina Gruen Gilde SA” is born, the largest community of interests that ever existed in the horological field.

The factories belonging to the new company were rationalized to produce standard calibres, and quality of Alpina and Gruen watches improved. Highlight model created at this time is the “Doctor’s Watch” produced by the Aegler factory. Rolex later bought the Aegler factory. The “Doctor’s Watch” was distributed under the names of Alpina, Gruen, Alpina-Gruen and Rolex (“Prince”). But the infatuation of the beginning had a short duration.

Even when Gruen produced good quality watches, it was almost unknown in Europe. Moreover Gruen wanted to sell its watches at higher prices than Alpina, which made it very difficult for the European Association members to accept Gruen. At the same time, Gruen seemed to have restricted Alpina access to its USA members. Heavy losses were the result of this cooperation, and the two brands separated in 1937; Alpina Union Horlogère SA continued alone.

ALPINA’S BEST SELLERS

In 1933, Alpina presented its first “sports-watch”, the “Blockuhr” in steel. During this time, Alpina patented also a new type of crown (Brevet 1464). Thanks to the technical progress, the sports-watch evolved quickly and became the “Alpina 4” in 1938. The “4” meant a combination of four major qualities of an Alpina sports-watch: 1) anti magnetic, 2) waterproof (thanks to its “Geneva” case), 3) equipped with the Incabloc anti-shock system, and lastly, 4) stainless steel.

The “Alpina 4” was manufactured with the Alpina self-winding calibre 592, one of the strongest calibres of its generation. This calibre was later on used to equip further sport-models such as the Alpina 70 (1953), the Standard (1958) and the Tropicproof (1968). In 1945, the first Alpina automatic movement was realized, the 582 calibre. The automatic winding system worked with a mechanism with two springs where in between the oscillating mass moved back and forth. This large and accurate movement (12 ½ lines) was equipped with a Nivarox spiral, had 18 000 alternances and the Incabloc system. Its power reserve was 40 hours. In 1957, the Alpina President was introduced and quickly became known as a reliable automatic sport-watch (calibre 584c with date).

In 1963, Alpina realized an automatic movement for women; the smallest and strongest ever made yet, the calibre 362 (6 ½ lines). It worked with a rotor system, turning in both ways. Those are few of the most known models. The Alpina collection at its height consisted of many hundreds of models (there were 1000 models exhibited at the 1958’s Congress). Retrospectively, one can say that the sports-line was the main focus of the Alpina collection. Since 1933, Alpina improved the performance of its sports-watches continuously and followed with these watches an evolution where people engaged in more spare-time activities.

THE SECOND WORLD WAR

While the Union Horlogère had separated in three legally independent companies during the First World War, relationships were again under intense scrutiny during World War II. Import and capital flow restrictions as well as travel problems suppressed many of its activities. Eventually, the Allied Forces pressed the Swiss Alpina Union Horlogère to drop usage of the Alpina name in Germany. The German association then adopts the name Dugena (Deutsche Uhremacher-Genossenschaft Alpina), which becomes their new trademark.

AFTER THE WAR

After the War, co-operation re-started intensively. The change of the name in Germany to Dugena even had a positive effect because members could now also start to sell watches produced in Germany. The Swiss Union Horlogère sold again only high-end watches from Switzerland to its members, including the German association under the strong Alpina brand. Alpina continued to develop and the Congress reconciled each year with more and more people. Everything ran well until the seventies, when the quartz crises violently crushed the Swiss watch-industry.

Alpina was powerless to counter the overwhelming emergence of electronic watches. Other major brands got together to form groups (predecessor of the Swatch Group), but Alpina tried to fight it alone without really succeeding. In 1972, Alpina Watch International SA was incorporated with new German investors, which purchased all shares in Alpina Union Horlogère SA.

A few years later, the German investors settled the company in Köln, Germany. Alpina continued to be sold in a more restrictive manner under the new slogan that determined more clearly the commercial policy of the brand: “Alpina the brand reserved to specialized dealers”. Watches were now sold partly from Köln, further diluting the clarity of the company. Much of the previous“Alpinist” spirit that made Alpina so strong was getting lost.

Product creation and renewal was managed partly from the distribution company in Germany resulting in less than coherent collections that had reduced market appeal. Alpina missed the revival of the mechanical watch in the eighties and nineties, probably due to fact that the German investors behind Alpina watch International SA were too far away from the epicentre of mechanical watch making in Switzerland.

THE REVIVAL OF ALPINA

In February 2002, Alpina Watch International SA introduced a new mechanical sports collection under the name Alpina, perpetuating the Alpina heritage. The new Alpina collection of technical sport watches was composed of 25 mechanical models, some equipped with complications; two families with different styles should attract various kinds of sportsmen.

Alpina’s first series of Regulator wristwatches, presented in 2005, was a reminder of the brand’s heritage and fascinating history – albeit with a design that is resolutely fresh and contemporary. Inspired by the past, yet built with today’s design and technical know-how.

When the two co-founders of Frédérique Constant, Aletta and Peter Stas, took over the Alpina Swiss watch brand Alpina in 2002, their goal was to manufacture tough yet elegant, top-quality sports watches.

Today, Alpina is one of the very few Swiss watch companies, which develops, produces and assembles its movements entirely in-house. Alpina proposes five in-house calibers: the AL-980 Tourbillon; the AL-718 World Timer; the AL-950 Automatic Regulator; the AL-710 Automatic Small Date, and, most recently, the AL-760 Flyback Chronograph, featuring the patented “Direct Flyback” technology. And now the AlpinerX AL-283 caliber.

Faithful to its long tradition of innovation, in 2015 Alpina introduced the first connected Swiss Made Horological Smartwatch, thereby creating a new watch category in the Swiss watch industry.
Alpina’s mission is to design and engineer luxury sport watches that operate with the greatest precision and reliability possible in the most demanding sporting environments, like the Alps.
