ALFEX WATCHES

A small, independent watchmaker from Tessin in Switzerland, Alfex produces timepieces in close cooperation with prominent designers and rising young talents.

Since its establishment, Alfex has worked to stand out on the watchmaking landscape through a strong focus on design, respect for the criteria of Swiss quality and mid-range pricing. An in-house design team makes this combination possible, so that today Alfex may continue to follow the vision of its founder, Ferdinand Gindraux. In 1948, Gindraux created the company with the goal of creating a brand that would revolutionise the traditional conception of timepieces.

HISTORY

It was in 1948 that Ferdinand Gindraux realized his childhood dream, founding the watch brand Ferex SA in the city of Lugano, in the canton of Ticino. His wish, which was to be fulfilled through his work as a representative for a watchmaking house in the period between the two world wars, was to create a brand combining elegance, originality and innovation. His choice of the city of Lugano as his company’s headquarters, instead of the canton of Jura, the home of watchmaking par excellence, shows his desire to break with tradition.

Gindraux’s intuition was right on the mark, and Ferex was a huge commercial success. It immediately took on an international slant, finding its key market in the United States, where it opened its first subsidiary.

In the 1960s, Ferex merged with the Economic Swiss Time group of Basel, which was then bought out by SSIH, the owner of major names in Swiss watchmaking like Omega and Tissot. Yet, this collaboration did not provide the hoped-for support and Gindraux decided to leave the group, founding a new independent company.

Thus, Alfex SA was born in 1974, placed under the management of Alfa Grosa, Gindraux’s long-time employee, and Paul Perlmutter, former representative in the USA. The name Alfex comes from the fusion of the names Alfa and Ferex.

The brand-new company was ready to reintroduce itself. In the early 1980s, the Roskopf manual movement, which had been used in its watches, was replaced with a quartz movement. And in 1981 Hans Saurer took the reins of the company, shifting its focus entirely to design, following its founder’s wishes.

In the period between 1983 and 1987, the brand produced and launched particularly important models, like the “Royal Air Force Watch”, created in collaboration with the British Museum, a model with the lunar phases and one decorated with crystals.

1986 saw the beginning of a fruitful and prestigious collaboration with Dior, as licensee. At the time, this represented an absolute first in the watchmaking sector. Alfex created 30 models for the Parisian fashion house, each available in editions of about 6 500. Other similar collaborations would follow with Borbonese and Disney in the wake of this success.

Alfex began working with well-known designers in 1994. This choice led the company to win numerous international awards in the 1990s and 2000s, like the “Red Dot Award”, by the Design Zentrum Nordrhein-Westfalen in Hamburg and the “Good Design Award”, the oldest and most prestigious design competition, presented by the Chicago Anthenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design.

In 2005, Alfex re-joined the small circle of brands representing Switzerland at the world fair in Aichi, Japan: based on the mountain theme chosen for the fair, the brand proposed a collection called “Cervino” inspired by Switzerland and the Alps’ symbolic mountain peak: the Matterhorn.

This marriage between Alfex and the mountains was also expressed in 2007 through cooperation with Alpine ski champion Bernhard Russi who designed a “capsule collection” for Alfex composed of two models inspired by the mountains of Andermatt, his home region: Badus and Lucendo. Russi is also spokesman for the brand.

With the aim of discovering and training young talents, Alfex launched a competition in 2007 for the students of the prestigious Swiss design school HEAA ARC promising to produce the winning design. Thus, two new models, Curl Lines and Waves Lines were born. The positive experience was repeated in 2009.

2008 was a particularly important year for the company, which celebrated its 60th anniversary. To mark the occasion, 25 representatives from 13 different countries were invited to visit the headquarters and the ateliers in Lugano. The occasion was also marked by the launch of the Giant Alarm Pezzola model, part of the Bernhard Russi Collection.

The unique PWP1-11 automatic movement was presented at Baselworld in 2012, marking winds of change at the company. In 2011, with the arrival of Marcus Weber at the company’s head as CEO and majority shareholder, following a collaboration that began in 2005, Alfex is living another time of major change and innovation. In 2013, Alfex celebrated its 65th birthday and launched its brand repositioning project to focus more on design, Alfex’s major strength.

Alfex Watch Collection 2013

TREND CYCLE: TRANSLUCENT 8X (5702)

Timepiece, bracelet, design piece and unique accessory: Alfex’s innovative and original spirit is expressed in the Translucent 8X bangle-watch.

Taking the simple lines and regularity of a geometric shape, the octagon, as a starting point, the watch’s design uses repetition to create a pattern that is multiplied to infinity and forms the bracelet’s structure. In a rejection of rigidity, the shiny steel latticework is enveloped in a translucent material in which it seems to float.

Alfex Watch Collection 2013 - Translucent 8X bangle-watch

The dial breaks with convention, positioned off-centre and framed by the outer edge of four octagons. The hour and minute hands move across a surface with a sunray finish.

This creation is the fruit of advanced technological research combined with a passion for design and a desire to overcome a challenge, that of establishing a technical and harmonious aesthetic balance between two very different materials: on the one hand, strong and flexible shiny 316L steel, and on the other, transparent and lightweight acrylic with a grey smoky finish.

Alfex Watch Collection 2013 - Translucent 8X bangle-watch

Translucent 8X is equipped with a Swiss Made ISA quartz movement and is water-resistant to three atmospheres. It is available in two sizes: regular and small.

NEW STRUCTURE: SWING 5722

A certain playfulness and a desire to have some fun inspired Alfex’s designers to create this new collection of original and playful watches with a vintage mood that evoke the carefree spirit of the 1920s.

Alfex Watch Collection 2013 - SWING 5722

The small and elegant dial, with a diameter of just 15 millimetres, it given greater presence by the rectangle with rounded corners frame within which it slides. By moving the wrist, the wearer causes the dial to “swing”, thus amplifying the beat of time. The hours are indicated with linear markings at 12 and 6 o’clock.

Alfex Watch Collection 2013 - SWING 5722

Following the Alfex philosophy, the watch becomes an accessory, and in this case, a piece of jewellery that marks the passing of the minutes as it swings to the pace of our daily lives.

The Swing collection comes in three variations: two with simply coloured dials—silver and black—paired with a steel bracelet, and a third with a pure silver dial in delicate contrast to its gold bracelet.

Alfex Watch Collection 2013 - SWING 5722

The steel links form a chain of rectangle that echoes the dial’s frame. Swing is equipped with a Swiss Made quartz movement and is waterproof to 3 atmospheres.

SWEET SQUARE 5725

The strict proportions of a perfect square and the purity of its simple lines form the outline of Alfex’s Sweet Square model. A feminine watch with a definite appeal that adopts the unique choice of a bracelet/strap consisting of a metal ring and a leather band that, on the one hand, showcases metal design, and on the other, guarantees comfort and optimal ease of wear thanks to the leather.

Alfex Watch Collection 2013 - SWEET SQUARE 5725

Three squares of different sizes embrace the wrist, with the 24 x 24 millimetre case in the centre. The collection offers two dial versions in silver and black – tones that are echoed in the straps with a steel pin buckle. Sweet Square watches are equipped with a Swiss Made quartz movement and are waterproof to 3 atmospheres.

WATCHSCOPE 5728

An exercise in design: joining and overlapping forms give life to a timepiece accessory that expresses Alfex’s taste for watchmaking creativity.

The Watchscope collection possesses a 24 x 34 millimetre case with a bezel formed by two intersecting rectangles: the first, made of shiny steel, is laid horizontally, and the second, steel with enamel coating, sits vertically. The end result is a two-tone frame that accentuates the bracelet’s telescopic effect.

Alfex Watch Collection 2013 - WATCHSCOPE 5728

Colour makes delicate inroads in this line, which, in addition to black and white, sees the addition of beige that offers a contrast to the pure colour of gold-finish steel. There are a full five models in the collection. The white dial is proposed with a steel bracelet and hour markers; the gold-finish steel bracelet comes with hour markers in the same tone, and a version where two different shades cohabit on the same watch.

Alfex Watch Collection 2013 - WATCHSCOPE 5728

The models with the black dial and beige dial are proposed against a more sober backdrop of pure metal tones. The bracelet takes its cues from the shapes defining the outlines of the case and the shrinking rectangles that create an effect of perspective. Watchscope watches are equipped with a Swiss Made quartz movement and are waterproof to 3 atmospheres.

WATCHTIVI 5731

Like a ribbon of tiles hugging the wrist, an ordered mosaic brings gives form to a bracelet adorned with ceramic inserts that create an optical effect.

Geometry dominates, regular shapes are repeated, and the watch becomes a bracelet, an everyday accessory that rests softly on the wrist. In the centre of the 26-millimetre square case is a minimal black or white dial with the Alfex logo at 6 o’clock; the logo is also engraved on the bracelet.

Alfex Watch Collection 2013 - WATCHTIVI 5731

A high-quality and very resistant material, the ceramic of the bracelet’s inserts add a precious touch to this Alfex creation. The simplicity of the shapes is accentuated by the colours of the metal. Watchtivi watches are equipped with a Swiss Made quartz movement and are waterproof to 3 atmospheres.

MODERN CLASSIC: WATCHTWICE 5721

An extra-large 40 millimetre case paired with an extra-fine leather band swathed in black whose double twist around the wrist that captures the attention with an element of surprise.

Alfex Watch Collection 2013 - WATCHTWICE 5721

Alfex’s classic design displays astounding linearity and attention to detail. The dial has a sunray finish that lights up the surface on which the baton hour and minute hands turn, unexpectedly sporting the same finish as the crown.

Alfex Watch Collection 2013 - WATCHTWICE 5721

In addition to its natural colour, the steel is also with ultra-feminine and ultra-chic gold and pink gold finishes. The Watchtwice line is equipped with a Swiss Made quartz movement and sapphire glass and is waterproof to 3 atmospheres. The back is closed with four screws.

ERGO FLAT 5729/5730

Alfex has created a collection of watches that capture the traditional values of Swiss watchmaking revisited in light of the brand’s spirit of design and passion for purity.

Alfex Watch Collection 2013 - ERGO FLAT 5729/5730

A classic shape, with its round case, that is available in two sizes: a 40-millimetre diameter for women and 44 for men. A slender bezel leaves space for the ample dial with its sunray finish and minimal linear elements: markings at 12 and 6 o’clock, baton hands and the Alfex logo at 6 o’clock. The choice of sapphire glass and the unique bracelet express the collection’s Swiss personality.

Alfex Watch Collection 2013 - ERGO FLAT 5729/5730

The steel, occasionally two-tone bracelet, is fine and flexible for maximum comfort. The collection also includes models on a leather strap with a pin buckle. Traditional details for a minimalist collection typical of the Swiss design tradition.

There are four versions for her, two with a steel bracelet and two with a leather strap. The same are available for him, as well an additional variant with a taupe dial on a steel bracelet. The case back is closed with four screws. Waterproof to 3 atmospheres.

ALFEX AUTOMATIC COLLECTION

Alfex SA, based in the South of Switzerland, launches in 2012 its Automatic Collection.

The peculiarity of the mechanical movement, which is visible under the caseback, is worth a description. Alfex uses its own automatic movement cal. 1-11, assembled inside Alfex factory by experienced watchmakers. Bridges and plates are pearlised and the rotor is decorated with „Côtes de Genève“.

Movements are equipped with the famous Incabloc Shock System, have 26 jewels which ensure a long life, the power reserve is 46 hours and the calendar has a quick change system. The line is composed by 2 references, ref. 9010 and ref. 9011 and totally 16 watches.

All the models feature a scratch proof sapphire glass and are made of high-quality stainless steel 316L, which has anti-allergic properties. All watches are available with high quality genuine leather strap or with a stainless steel bracelet. They are water resistant up to 5 ATM.

Alfex Flat Line Collection Retro Glance 5638

The newest model in the Alfex Flat Line collection, Retro Glance, transcends the categories of male or female watch types as well as the ordinary. With this simple design, Alfex creates a new meaning, an understanding for the material and enjoyment of the object itself.

Alfex Flat Line Collection Retro Glance 5638

Its linear, fluid shape gives the wearer the freedom to take time for a sentimental journey back in time, to relive those defining moments that enrich our lives so much, those unique moments that were transformed into tiny, personal gems along the endless continuum of time.

Alfex Flat Line Collection Retro Glance 5638

Alfex Lizard – Design by Georg Plum

With the Lizard models created by Georg Plum, Alfex engages in a body language of sublimely clever femininity.

Depending on the intensity and angle of the light, the silver, gold and bicolor models transform themselves into versatile accessories, reminding us of the sparkling silver-grey of dawn, a golden band of sunlight emanating warmth and sensuality, or, combined with a black dial, simply making a stylish, elegant appearance at a cocktail party.

Alfex Lizard Watch – Design by Georg Plum

The fragmented structure of the flexible linked chain strap reminds us of the shiny scale texture of a Jeweled Lacertas. In ancient Egypt lizards were considered a symbol of divine wisdom and luck. The lizards of the Alfex New Structures Collection are the modern embodiment of the talisman.

The Lizard models bear the Swiss-Made label, are constructed of anti-allergenic stainless steel, featuring a Ronda quartz movement, tempered mineral crystal and are water resistant up to 3 ATM.
The Lizard models are available at select stores in polished steel with brushed middle links and a silver or black dial, in polished bi-color with silver dial and in polished IP-gold with silver dial.

ALFEX BLACK LIGHT

In December 2009, ALFEX received the Good Design Award for the men’s model Black Light. This prestigious recognition catapults Alfex to the highest international design level and confirms the tremendous design potential of this independent Swiss watch maker, who is aiming for a standard that is not only based on product quality and that does not only appeal to the individual consumer, but to the world. The company’s constant commitment to good design is the true engine behind its success.

In this spirit, Alfex presented the world’s first wrist watch with three-dimensional dial. The indexes are made of clear sapphire glass, the hands move under the indexes. The name Black Light – a rhetorical oxymoron – describes the properties of the watch which make reading time by night a sensational experience, thanks to the fact that the indexes contain superluminova, while the jet black dial reflects the brightest light.

This unique three-dimensional design allows the wearer to virtually immerse himself in the watch. It is the expression of modern awareness where three-dimensional design represents our multi-faceted and complex lives.

A sophisticated design has the power to initiate change and to connect opposites. Designer Ivo Vaz, in collaboration with HEEA Design University in La Chaux-de-Fonds, has masterfully implemented this concept with Black Light.

The Black Light models from the Big Line collection are available in select stores in two versions: Steel case with an integrated black leather watchband, and case with black IP cover and integrated black leather watchband.
