Bühlmann Decompression 01

Switzerland based crowd-manufacturing company Watch Angels SA has launched a new fund-raising campaign for the Bühlmann watches brand.

This new watchmaking venture pays tribute to Albert Alois Bühlmann (1923 – 1994), the Swiss scientist known for his extensive research activities related to both medical and safety requirements of deep divers.

The first timepiece from the brand is Bühlmann Decompression 01, which incorporates the famous Bühlmann tables that are based on the decompression algorithm developed by A. Bühlmann.

Bühlmann Decompression 01 diving watch

Exclusively designed for professional divers, the Decompression watch features a Bühlmann 0-700 ASL decompression security stops bezel and an innovative push lock-unlock system to lock and unlock the crowns and the helium valve.

The decompression tables are indented for ensuring safety during commercial, military and recreational diving activities.

About Albert Alois Bühlmann

Born in 1923 in Berlin, Professor Albert Alois Bühlmann was a respected doctor and scientist at the University Hospital in Zürich, Switzerland. He was a world-renowned Diving Medicine Physician, and dealt with the medical conditions associated with diving and their treatment. He was a pioneer in developing Hyperbaric Chambers, Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicines, Decompression Tables and Dive Computers.

His decompression model and gas mixture procedure were utilized efficiently during a number of record-breaking diving and hyperbaric experiments.

These include 1959 Lake Zürich, Switzerland (120M), 1961 Brissago, Switzerland (220M), 1962 Catalina Islands, California (311M), 1966 Porto San Stefano, Italy (220M exposure to saturation), 1969 Alverstoke, UK (350M exposure to saturation) and the 575M record in the Zürich hyperbaric chamber in 1981.

Professional divers play an important role in the offshore oil and natural gas exploration industry. In 1963, Bühlmann had entered into a partnership with Anglo-Dutch multinational oil and gas company Shell and Micoperi to develop safe decompression procedures for professional divers on long-term dives to great depths.

Now owned by the Norwegian business group Protan, Micoperi is an Italian engineering and installation company specialized in the offshore oil & gas industry. A notable result of this collaboration was the Capshell in 1966, a hyperbaric chamber designed for long-term under water experiments.

In the early 1970s, he developed altitude-adjusted decompression tables for the diving activities conducted in the lakes located at high attitudes. In the meantime, he also supervised to replace the existing hyperbaric chamber with a new one in the University Hospital of Zurich.

Put into operation in 1975, the new Druckkammer (hyperbaric chamber) had capability to perform dive experiments up to a depth of 1000m. Its ancestor’s diving depth was limited to 300 meters. Bühlmann used these hyperbaric chambers to calculate decompression algorithm.

In the 1980s, Bühlmann ventured into the field of decompression computers. He had collaborated with companies like Divetronics, Dynatron AG and Uwatec AG for developing dive computers. For example, his calculation model ZHL-16 was used to develop the Deco-Brain II dive computer by Divetronics. The diver computers born from his collaboration with Dynatron AG and Uwatec AG were Aladin (1987), Aladin Pro (1988) and Aladin Air X (1994).

Bühlmann passed away on 16 March 1994.

The ZH-L16A calculation model was published in 1986. His decompression tables are still popular and widely used. Many dive computers use variations of the decompression algorithms created by Bühlmann.

Delma Shell Star Decompression Timer

The family-owned, independent Swiss watch brand Delma revives their iconic Shell Star collection by presenting a new diving watch with the Decompression Timer.

Delma’s professional diving watch Shell Star was introduced in 1975. The newly released Shell Star Decompression Timer is a technical, durable and stylish deep diver.

Delma Shell Star Decompression Timer

The functionality of the Shell Star Decompression Timer is based on research of the 1950s and 60s by Swiss dive pioneers Hannes Keller and Albert Bühlmann. Both former students at the University of Zurich, their combined expertise in mathematics, physics and diving motivated them to perform revolutionary research in the diving field. They recognized the impact of altitude on decompression and developed tables with specific gas mixtures for different elevations.

Delma Shell Star Decompression Timer

Bühlmann focused on identifying the correct combination of gases while Keller performed experimental dives to test their theories. The resulting tables enabled safe decent at sea level and in mountainous terrain and were even adopted by the Swiss military in 1972. Still today considered to be the most intuitive of their kind, they uniquely take into account the need for multiple decompression stops for deeper and longer dives.

Delma Shell Star Decompression Timer

The Delma Shell Star Decompression Timer is optimized for diving with air breathing at 0-700 meters above sea level. The diver uses the unidirectional bezel to time his dive. The vertical scale on the dial at 12 o‘clock corresponds to their dive depth in meters or feet.

It enables the diver to clearly see if their dive is within the no-decompression limit (NDL) where no decompression is required or whether decompression stops are necessary. The NDL time is reflected by the white markings on the rings, while the amount of decompression stops and their duration are shown by the numbers.

Delma Shell Star Decompression Timer

Unlike other comparable timepieces, DELMA’s Shell Star Decompression Timer utilizes Keller and Bühlmann’s research to clearly display when multiple decompression stops are needed for dives at sea level and beyond. Dressed in a robust 44mm diameter case and water resistant to 500 meters (1650 ft), this automatic diving timepiece also features a helium escape valve.

Delma Shell Star Decompression Timer

The  Shell Star Decompression Timer watch is offered with a black, blue or orange unidirectional bezel with either a stainless steel bracelet or rubber strap.

Delma Shell Star Decompression Timer

All models are automatic and contain a SW200 movement with date and DELMA customized rotor. Key historical characteristics include a spade central seconds hand, the railway track and orange and white indexes. The stainless steel case is sealed with a transparent case back revealing the intricate movement.

BOLDR New Odyssey Bronze

BOLDR Supply Company has announced the launch of the latest Odyssey Bronze line-up, a returning favourite with exciting new features. At 45.5 mm, this chunky dive watch is designed for watch enthusiasts who have a particular propensity for larger watches and superior luminescence.

Using a brand new lume technology known as Lumicast®, the Odyssey Bronze stands to outshine its peers and deliver adventure-ready performance to its wearer. The watch will be available for pre-order on BOLDR’s website.

BOLDR New Odyssey Bronze

The Odyssey Bronze series has been a fan favourite ever since its inception in 2018, selling out within a few months of its release. A tough, adventure-ready diver that packs quality and durability at an affordable price, this latest line-up is set to be their best offering yet. It features some new special features such as 3D-lume markers, a high double-dome crystal, and a durable fluoroelastomer rubber strap called Druber®.

BOLDR New Odyssey Bronze

The most prominent addition to the series is the use of Lumicast®, a new technology that creates a 3D lume effect with superior brightness and legibility. The lume markers are not applied nor laid in the style of sandwich dials; but they are actually built of luminescent material.

BOLDR New Odyssey Bronze

Combining ceramic parts with Swiss Super-LumiNova®, the dial markers are casted according to specifications of each individual watchmaker’s design. The resulting indexes are raised, giving them a 3D effect.

BOLDR New Odyssey Bronze

This is especially attractive for diving as watches using Lumicast® maintain their glow for much longer periods than its counterparts. Another dive-friendly feature is the accompanying Druber® strap, a fluoroelastomer rubber band developed with BOLDR’s manufacturing partners.

BOLDR New Odyssey Bronze

Fluoroelastomers are known for their superior rubber quality, high durability, and resistance to extreme temperatures. These straps are comfortable on the wrist with a pleasant softness while supporting the hefty bronze case, integrated perfectly with the lugs for a neat finish.

BOLDR New Odyssey Bronze

The super-tough CuSn8 case has a 120-click unidirectional bronze bezel and is rated for 500m water resistance, with a screw-down crown & triple lock mechanism for extra water protection. Keeping the watch afloat underwater is the resilient Japanese NH35 Automatic movement, and a special helium escape valve to release pressure that may accumulate under the crystal.

Available in Prussian Blue, Pine Green, and Slate Grey dial colors, each model is limited to 100 pieces with individual serial numbers.

Oris Aquis Depth Gauge, Second Generation

Swiss watch brand Oris has launched the second generation of Aquis Depth Gauge, one of the world’s most innovative and most distinctive high-performance diver’s watches. A professional grade diving watch, the Aquis Depth Gauge uses a complex scientific principle to create an easy-to-use depth gauge function that’s also safe and accurate.

Oris Aquis Depth Gauge, Second Generation

The new Oris Aquis Depth Gauge watch features three key improvements:

  1. Depth gauge system: In the new watch, the process used to mill the channel into the outer edge of the crystal has been refined so the accuracy and legibility of the Gauge are increased.
  2. Metres-to-feet conversion chart: The caseback has been re-engineered so the metres-to-feet conversion chart is always set at 90 degrees to the 12o’clock position.
  3. The new patented Quick Strap Change system.

This second generation Aquis Depth Gauge watch has a massive 45.80mm diameter stainless steel case and black dial with date at 6 o’ clock and yellow gauge.

Oris Aquis Depth Gauge, Second Generation

Behind the Aquis Depth Gauge’s inventive solution for measuring depth underwater is the Boyle-Mariotte Law, which states for gases that ‘pressure x volume = constant’.

Oris Aquis Depth Gauge, Second Generation

Oris’s engineers calculated that the volume of air in a channel milled into the sapphire crystal would reduce during a dive, compressed under pressure. So during a dive, the volume of air compresses, allowing water to enter the channel. The air then decompresses during an ascent, forcing the water out of the hole. Oris has patented this development.

Oris Aquis Depth Gauge, Second Generation

The hole leading to the channel milled into the outer edge of the sapphire crystal is at 12 o’clock. On dry land, it’s filled with air.

On entering the water, that air is compressed by water pressure. Water then enters the hole and begins to fill the space created in the channel. This in turn creates a watermark visible through the crystal. The watermark corresponds to a yellow gauge running around the outside of the dial, and the two combine to indicate depth. The second-generation watch has a more finely grained channel than before, making the indication even clearer.

The Aquis Depth Gauge allows water into the crystal, but it doesn’t allow water into the watch itself – this would damage the watch’s automatic mechanical movement. Oris engineered the watch so that water can only enter the channel through the hole in the crystal. A gasket around the crystal seals the watch, and is so reliable that Oris has certified the watch as water-resistant to 50 bar (500 metres).

Oris Aquis Depth Gauge, Second Generation

The second generation of the Aquis Depth Gauge is equipped with the independent Swiss watch company’s patented strap change system. A mechanism built into the stainless steel metal bracelet and the black rubber strap means that the wearer can quickly and simply switch from one to the other and back again.

Carl F. Bucherer Patravi ScubaTec Maldives

The Patravi ScubaTec Maldives dive watch celebrates Carl F. Bucherer’s long-standing partnership with the Manta Trust. The newest member of the Patravi ScubaTec family, the Maldives watch, was created to raise awareness of the Manta Trust and its remarkable commitment to preserving endangered manta rays and the ecosystems and habitat they need to survive.

Carl F. Bucherer Patravi ScubaTec Maldives

The Patravi ScubaTec Maldives is the fourth watch Carl F. Bucherer has launched in partnership with the Manta Trust since 2017. A portion of the proceeds from the sales of each model was donated to the foundation, and a contribution from the sale of the Patravi ScubaTec Maldives is specifically dedicated to the Manta Trust’s new floating research station project. The Patravi ScubaTec watches are an essential part of Carl F. Bucherer’s Sport & Adventure brand world and reflect an important part of its DNA.

The Patravi ScubaTec Maldives has a striking 44.6 mm stainless-steel case and a unidirectional rotating stainless-steel bezel with blue and white ceramic inlays. A bold 60-minute scale with luminous markings makes it easy to calculate elapsed time underwater – a real benefit for serious divers. The bright blue dial with lacquered wave decoration is as eye-catching on land as it is in the water.

Carl F. Bucherer Patravi ScubaTec Maldives

The color of the non-slip bezel perfectly matches the color of the bright blue, finely textured dial, whose indexes and hands are coated with Super-LumiNova, which makes the watch particularly easy to read in all lighting conditions.

This stunning dive watch is presented on a unique blue strap made of natural rubber; its fabric insert is made of 100% recycled bottles recovered from the Mediterranean Sea, underscoring Carl F. Bucherer’s love of the sea and its creatures.

Carl F. Bucherer Patravi ScubaTec Maldives

The strap is fitted with a finely adjustable diving folding clasp that extends the length of the bracelet so that it will close comfortably around a diving suit. The Patravi ScubaTec Maldives is also available with an optional stainless-steel bracelet, also with a diving folding clasp. Like the strap, the bracelet features a fine adjustment function, which means that it can be extended to precisely the length the wearer desires.

Carl F. Bucherer Patravi ScubaTec Maldives

With its screw-down crown, automatic helium valve, and exceptional water resistance to 500 m (50 bar) it was designed for any underwater adventures that might come its way. Inside the case beats the automatic caliber CFB 1950.1, a COSC-certified chronometer with a power reserve of 38 hours.

A charitable contribution for each Patravi ScubaTec Maldives sold will support a remarkable new Manta Trust initiative: the creation of a floating research station in the Maldives. The Maldivian reef manta population is the largest – and one of the most intensively studied – manta ray populations in the world.

Most existing research bases are centralized, limiting the extent to which members of the Manta Trust’s team can travel and the area they can survey daily. The floating research station, a vessel secured with the help of funding from Carl F. Bucherer, will provide an opportunity for new discoveries in parts of the Maldives that have so far been inaccessible with the existing centralized stations. A team of trained, knowledgeable manta experts will be able to conduct in-depth research.

A non-profit organization, the Manta Trust was founded in 2011 by passionate marine biologist Guy Stevens. Its mission is clear: it is dedicated to the worldwide conservation of manta rays and their habitats through research, education, and collaboration. For a decade, they have been raising awareness of these remarkable creatures and providing education not only to the general public, but also to community stakeholders.

DAVOSA Ternos Professional Matt Suit Limited Edition

Swiss watch brand DAVOSA expands its Ternos Professional diving collection by presenting the ‘Matt Suit’ edition.

This new variant is a limited edition of 500 pieces. The main distinctive feature of the new Matt Suit edition is that every detail of the watch, from the case to the dial to the hands, has been given a fine satined finish.

DAVOSA Ternos Professional Matt Suit Limited Edition

Its 42mm diameter and 15.5mm high case is made from brushed surgical steel. The case is topped by a flat sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating on the inside of the glass.

DAVOSA Ternos Professional Matt Suit Limited Edition

The screw-down back also comes with an elaborately structured carbon centrepiece, as well as the limited edition number. The DAVOSA Ternos Pro Matt Suit is equipped with the high-quality Swiss DAV 3021 automatic movement, based on a SW200 Sellita movement.

DAVOSA Ternos Professional Matt Suit Limited Edition

The Matt Suit version proves that a matt finish can still be multi-faceted: The design is underpinned by a structured matt dial, against which the stainless steel indices and hands with their satined surfaces and white Super-LumiNova BGW09 filling really stand out.

DAVOSA Ternos Professional Matt Suit Limited Edition

The equally matt white minute markings provide contrast on the circular satined bezel insert made from high-tech ceramic, as well as ensuring optimum readability.

DAVOSA Ternos Professional Matt Suit Limited Edition

The bezel is executed in either navy blue or deep black to match the dial colour. The DAVOSA Ternos Pro Matt Suit is completed by a fully brushed metal strap with screwed links, a safety buckle and diving extension.

DAVOSA Ternos Professional Matt Suit Limited Edition

Water resistant up to 500 metres (50 ATM), the DAVOSA Ternos Matt Suit is equipped with an automatic helium valve set at 9 o’clock. The valve regulates gas pressure inside the watch and ensures continuous pressure equalisation while resurfacing to stop the sapphire crystal from being pushed out of the case.

DAVOSA Ternos Professional Matt Suit Limited Edition

The Ternos Matt Suit limited edition models come in a lacquered wooden case with a certificate, and are available from specialist retailers at a RRP of 948 Euros.

Delma Cayman Worldtimer

Specialist in diving watches for over 50 years, Swiss watch brand DELMA expands its impressive portfolio with a new edition to the 70s inspired Cayman collection. First introduced in 2019, the original Cayman pays homage to the brand’s early divers’ watches. This year, DELMA expands this collection by introducing a new model which retains the aesthetic and technical qualities with the addition of world timer functionality.

Delma Cayman Worldtimer automatic watch

DELMA launched its first divers’ watch 1969 which laid the foundation for its expertise in the development of marine watches. Divers watches took center stage as DELMA introduced timepieces capable of descending into the depths of the sea. This garnered attention from world-renowned experts and drove development of marine centric watches.

Delma Cayman Worldtimer automatic watch

In 2019, 50 years after the launch of its first diving watch, DELMA launched the Cayman collection, equipped with contemporary performance features to celebrate the brand’s earliest dive models. Introduced in 2020, the Cayman Worldtimer retains the vintage style of the collection with the addition of 24-hour hand and reference cities on the bezel representing each time-zone.

Delma Cayman Worldtimer automatic watch

The new Cayman Worldtimer celebrates the diversity and beauty of the aquatic world, which makes up over 70 percent of the Earth’s surface. It is dedicated to adventures who seek to discover the wonders of the blue planet above and below the surface from the turquoise waters of the Caribbean to the pristine lakes of Switzerland.

Delma Cayman Worldtimer quartz watch

The watch is equipped with a bidirectional riveted bezel marked with the names of 24 reference cities, one for each time zone. The theme of the bezel compliments the polished sunray-brushed dial in nautical black abyss, deep blue and lustrous silver. Luminescent hands and indexes accompany a distinctive triangular 24-hour hand to effortlessly indicate multiple time zones relevant to the wearer.

Delma Cayman Worldtimer quartz watch

Faithful to the retro style of the Cayman collection beyond the case design, the Cayman Worldtimer also shares the same vintage style Milanese stainless steel bracelet or leather strap with contrasting stitching.

Delma Cayman Worldtimer quartz watch

The new Cayman Worldtimer watch is available in quartz and automatic versions. Equipped with an ETA 2893 self-winding movement, the automatic model reveals its decorated movement and the DELMA personalized rotor through a transparent case back. The quartz version houses a Ronda 515.24H movement and features stainless steel case.

Delma Cayman Worldtimer quartz watch

The Cayman Worldtimer watch has a 42mm diameter stainless steel case with a thickness of 13.6 mm in automatic version and 11 mm in quartz version. The watch features a sunray-brushed dial in abyss black, deep blue or lustrous silver shades.

Delma Oceanmaster Antarctica Limited Edition

Swiss watch brand DELMA presents Oceanmaster Antarctica, a limited edition diving timepiece to celebrate the discovery of one of the most unique places on earth.

Delma Oceanmaster Antarctica Limited Edition watch

As per the recommendations of DELMA’s brand ambassador Nick Moloney, the Swiss watch brand developed a new Oceanmaster timepiece to assist him and his team on their expedition to Antarctica in February 2020 to commemorate its discovery 200 years ago.

Delma Oceanmaster Antarctica Limited Edition watch

When Antarctica’s Princess Martha Coast was first discovered on 27 January 1820, the explorers were presented with a goliath ice shelf that reached out from the frozen continent. This year Nick and his team saw a new perspective of this fragile landscape as its impressive coastline constantly evolves.

While the Southern Ocean surrounding Antarctica is one of the most pristine places on Earth, largely unaffected by humans, the nearly 10,000 diverse species that call this unique habitat home are in danger. The Antarctic Peninsula is one of the fastest warming places on earth. During the team’s expedition, the warmest temperature on the northern tip of Antarctica was recorded, over 20 °C.

Delma Oceanmaster Antarctica Limited Edition watch

This timepiece is available in a limited edition of 200 pieces marking the 200th anniversary of the discovery of Antarctica. A portion of the proceeds of each Oceanmaster Antarctica will be donated to the Antarctic and Southern Ocean Coalition (ASOC) in their mission to protect the environment of the content.

Delma Oceanmaster Antarctica Limited Edition watch

Fitted with a Helium escape valve, this diving watch has a water resistance of 500 meters. The brand’s fascination with and compassion for this incredible continent is also reflected in the design of the new Oceanmaster. The cool blue dial is inspired by the colors of the ice as it meets the surrounding water while the raised texture represents the unique structure of the frozen landscape.

Delma Oceanmaster Antarctica Limited Edition watch

The special case back solidifies the watch’s connection to Antarctica with an engraved stainless steel representation of the continent. The Oceanmaster Antarctica is equipped with a tactical planner, points of sail indicators and a sturdy nautical bezel preparing it for any challenge.

AXIOS WATCHES IRONCLAD

Introduced on Kickstarter by AXIOS WATCHES on the 20th August 2019, the Ironclad is an affordable 500m depth rated, Swiss Automatic diving watch, built with the high-end specifications of a serious dive watch.

The AXIOS IRONCLAD maintains the definitive dive watch silhouette and is infused with the brand’s design ideas, resulting in a watch that is reminiscent of the past but wears its own character.

AXIOS WATCHES IRONCLAD

The Ironclad is made of 316L surgical stainless steel, fully brushed with high polish on the case sides and exhibiting high corrosion resistance, high durability and strength. The case measures 40mm diameter, 13mm thickness (13.8mm with crystal) and 20mm lug width.

A 120-click unidirectional ceramic bezel offers higher scratch resistance, a “nearly indestructible” property, strength and superior longevity. Generous and uniform application of C3 X1 Swiss Super-Luminova and BGW9 on applied indexes, hands and engraved bezel markings allow for maximum visibility in low light conditions.

AXIOS WATCHES IRONCLAD

AXIOS IRONCLAD is available in 5 versions: First Flight (Black sunburst dial, golden hands and accents, ceramic bezel with a splash of red at the 12 o’ clock triangular marker), Ocean Gulf (Black sunburst dial and blue-black ceramic bezel) Deep Blue (Blue sunburst dial, red seconds hands and blue ceramic dial) Horizon (Blue sunburst dial, blue ceramic bezel orange and white accents, orange minute and second hands and Northern Sky (Deep green sunburst dial, green ceramic bezel red seconds hands).

AXIOS WATCHES IRONCLAD diving watch

The AXIOS IRONCLAD watch is equipped with the Sellita SW200-1, a workhorse Swiss Automatic Movement. The SW200 is self-winding with an oscillating weight providing a 38-hour power reserve. The balance runs at 28,800 vibrations per hour (VPH) and the movement hacks, comprising 26-jeweled bearings.

AXIOS WATCHES IRONCLAD

The collection is named after the ferocious iron clad battleships used in the early part of the second half of the 19th century. The caseback of each Ironclad is engraved with an image of its namesake warship.

The caseback also bears its name, “Axios Ironclad”, the movement “SW200” and the words “Now comes the reign of iron”, immortalizing the words of Rear Admiral John Dahlgren as he witnessed the first Ironclads ending the 3000-year reign of wooden man-of-war ships in naval warfare. Additionally, the batch and serial number of each Ironclad will be engraved on the caseback “A XXX/XXX”.

AXIOS WATCHES IRONCLAD

The bracelet is a fully brushed; three-link stainless steel build which tapers from 20mm to 18mm. The clasp is milled out, double locking with six micro-adjust positions.

The Ironclads come fully coated with a scratch-resistant coating increasing the hardness of the watch exterior to 900-1100 HV. A double-dome sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on the underside ensures a high degree of scratch resistance and minimal light distortion.

Axios Watches was conceived in 2018 by Elshan Tang, Stuart Ho and Justin Chiam. Incorporated in early 2019 in Singapore, Axios Watches was founded to produce high quality watches at a great price.

Certina DS Super PH500M Special Edition Diving Watch – In Cooperation with the Association of German Sport Divers (Verband Deutscher Sporttaucher, VDST)

Its retro style and bright orange dial catch everyone’s eye: the striking DS Super PH500M Special Edition is inspired by a model from 1968. Numerous functional features, such as the anti-magnetic NivachronTM balance spring and water resistance up to 500 meters, make it the ideal underwater companion. The renowned VDST Association of German Sport Divers, which is closely associated with this model, finds this timepiece completely convincing.

Certina DS Super PH500M Special Edition Diving Watch - In Cooperation with the Association of German Sport Divers (Verband Deutscher Sporttaucher, VDST)

Thanks to their water-resistance features, by the end of the 1960s Certina watches had already made a name for themselves around the world. In 1969 they went on a special journey. In the course of the Tektite I underwater experiment, four scientists spent two months living underwater in research tanks. During this time they wore the DS-2 Super PH500M, brand new at the time, to which they awarded top marks upon conclusion of their stay. In doing so they proved that the DS concept of Double Security, launched ten years previously, had rendered Certina watches reliable partners for all kinds of adventures.

Certina DS Super PH500M Special Edition Diving Watch - In Cooperation with the Association of German Sport Divers (Verband Deutscher Sporttaucher, VDST)

In terms of design the latest Certina diver’s watch remains true to its roots. Particularly striking: the rotating bezel. It cannot be rotated without exerting light pressure, and then only in one direction. This safety feature is designed to prevent any accidental change to the running dive time. Today as in the past, the 43 mm watch features a scratch-proof sapphire crystal.

A generous coating of luminous material provides clarity, while the screw-down case back and screw-down crown render the watch water-resistant up to 500 meters. The orange dial is also inspired by the historic Certina diver’s watch and lends the contemporary re-edition a character all its own – along with optimal legibility. The watch is worn with a black rubber strap featuring a decorative wave pattern, and with a separate diver’s extension.

Ticking inside the timepiece, which conforms to the ISO 6425 standard for diver’s watches, is a modern Powermatic 80 automatic movement featuring a power reserve up to 80 hours. Its latest incarnation is even more impressive due to greater reliability and precision: thanks to its new NivachronTM balance spring it remains immune to the influence of magnetic fields – a decisive advantage both when diving and in everyday use. This represents an additional and extremely timely safety measure and enhancement of the classic DS concept.

Caseback view of Certina DS Super PH500M Special Edition Diving Watch - In Cooperation with the Association of German Sport Divers (Verband Deutscher Sporttaucher, VDST)

The Association of German Sport Divers (Verband Deutscher Sporttaucher, VDST) was founded in 1954. With 100 diving schools and dive centers, 17 regional sport diving associations and a total of 83,701 members, it is among the largest and oldest non-profit sport diving associations in the world. Certina and the VDST are connected through their shared love of the underwater world, a long history in sports diving and the search for maximum reliability.

All these elements can be found as well in the new DS Super PH500M Special Edition – a model that Certina is launching in cooperation with the VDST. Thus the high-contrast orange dial was chosen in response to an explicit request by experienced divers, and the VDST logo engraved on the case back.

All VDST members who purchase this watch can claim an exclusive set of additional straps: a black NATO strap with Klett closure of standard length, and an extra-long version that fits easily over the sleeve of a drysuit.

The new Patravi ScubaTec Black features impressive resilience, excellent technology, and outstanding functionality. Its ultra-light 44.6 mm titanium case has a matte black DLC coating, as does the unidirectional rotating bezel. The bezel is also equipped with scratch-resistant ceramic, a 60-minute scale, and luminous markers. The black, finely structured dial is adorned with black indices with an ample coating of SuperLumiNova.

Their luminescent blue gives the wearer the time of day even in the dark. The hour, minute, and second hands also have this tried-and-true luminous coating. They are accompanied by a date window at 3 o’clock.

The new version’s striking design is not the only thing inspired by the Black Manta Special Edition. This model also matches the Special Edition’s sustainability in every way. The ScubaTec Black Manta Special Edition is dedicated to protecting the oceans and to the brand’s partnership with the Manta Trust charitable organization.

Carl F. Bucherer Patravi ScubaTec Black with strap from recycled plastic (PPR/Carl F. Bucherer)

The watchmaker has been cooperating with the Manta Trust for many years to help conserve manta rays and their habitats. The idea of sustainability, which Carl F. Bucherer actively supports, is also expressed in the new version. A black rubber strap with fabric made of 100% recycled plastic bottles removed from the ocean rounds out the sporty, elegant look. A second version of this model with a striking black rubber strap is also available.

With its screw-down crown and automatic helium release valve, it is ideal for underwater adventures – as evidenced by its water-resistance to 50 bar (500 m). It is reliably powered by the CFB 1950.1 caliber automatic movement with a power reserve of 38 hours. Delma Shell Star Bronze Limited Edition

The independent Swiss watch brand DELMA has been producing precision timepieces for over 95 years. A focus on divers’ watches was established early in the brand’s history and has remained a core component of their innovation and performance. The new Shell Star Bronze evokes heritage and progress in diving as well as in watchmaking.

DELMA’s early maritime success was due to the exceptional technical qualities of their timepieces which continuously evolved as diving grew in popularity and extremity. In the late sixties the brand’s first divers’ watch, the Periscope, demonstrated innovation and potential underwater.

When the Shell Star was introduced in 1975, it met the needs of professional divers and solidified DELMA’s position as experts in the field. These models paved the way for the resilient Blue Shark collection first launched in 2011 to further amplify the brand’s performance and expertise at greater depths.

Solid bronze was selected for the case of the new Shell Star for its unique propensity to evolve and become more personal with exposure to the elements. It is considered a “living” metal as interaction with water, air, and sun cause it to oxidize and create a natural individual patina. Thanks to this fascinating feature, each Shell Star Bronze matures differently with the life of the wearer.

These special characteristics make the new Shell Star Bronze charismatic on the surface and in deep water. Durability and comfort are also essential for the new edition. Bronze, an alloy of copper and tin, is particularly resistant to corrosion. It has long been used in naval and professional diving applications including portholes and deck fittings as well as dive equipment and has therefore proven to be ideal for the new divers’ watch.

The stainless-steel case back creates a barrier between the responsive bronze and the wrist while the characteristic concave form of the Shell Star case is utilized to ensure ultimate comfort.

In profile, the Shell Star is unmistakably derived from the seventies. The curvy silhouette is reminiscent of quintessential design elements of the period. The wide toothed bezel is accompanied by integrated horns that blend seamlessly into the curvaceous crown protection emanating stylish robustness.

In keeping with the established high standards, DELMA’s new Shell Star Bronze possesses precise dive time control with a matching unidirectional rotating bezel appointed with luminous indexes and numerals.

A helium escape valve and secure screw-down crown heighten the strength and functionality with water resistance to 500 meters. The three hands and indexes with Super-LumiNova C3 ensure great visibility in total darkness.

Faithful to the spirit of the collection, the Shell Star Bronze possesses the key historical characteristics of its predecessors: a spade central seconds hand, railway track and indexes in orange and white.

The sand textured dial in green, blue, and brown are reminiscent of the seabed and the combination of bold and earthy colors are quintessential seventies. The DELMA customized movement with gold rotor is revealed through the stainless-steel case back with central porthole.

The distressed leather bracelet can be paired to match or compliment the dial creating 5 limited edition combinations. Like its predecessors, the Shell Star Bronze outperforms in style and durability.

Oris Ocean Trilogy

The independent Swiss watch company Oris has been supporting and championing ocean conservation programmes for years, most recently through The Oceans Project, which raises awareness and funds for pioneering agencies with game-changing visions.

The latest expression of Oris’s mission is the Blue Whale Limited Edition, the third and final piece in the Oris Ocean Trilogy, a trio of watches based on the Oris Aquis diver’s watch. The new watch is limited to 200 pieces and will only be available as part of a set delivered in a unique presentation case made of recycled PET plastic bottles.

Oris Ocean Trilogy – Set

The first two pieces in the trilogy were announced at Baselworld this year. The Great Barrier Reef Limited Edition III and the Clean Ocean Limited Edition have been made in partnership with the Reef Restoration Foundation and Pacific Garbage Screening respectively. While those watches focused on restoring coral reefs and cleaning the world’s waters, the Blue Whale Limited Edition turns to the plight of whales, and in particular to protecting the world’s largest animal.

Oris Blue Whale Limited Edition

The blue whale is the largest animal on the planet. But after centuries of poor treatment, the species is currently listed as endangered. Oris’s new partner, the charity Whale and Dolphin Conservation (WDC), has been funding vital research and conservation projects for 30 years. It calculates there were once around 350,000 blue whales in our oceans, but pre-industrial hunting decimated the population, and it’s thought there are now only between 10,000 and 25,000 left.

While blue whales are no longer threatened by commercial whaling, other threats such as fishing nets, environmental changes that lead to habitat loss, and the noise created by anthropogenic activities are all threats to their survival. WDC is working to conserve the blue whale by creating healthy seas and preventing deaths in nets.

WDC is involved in projects all over the world looking to combat these threats. The charity works with local authorities and tour operators off the coast of Sri Lanka where whales are at risk of vessel strikes. It also contributes to a research project on blue whales by the International Whaling Commission in the Antarctic Peninsula. WDC scientists are part of a team there collecting vital information through visual surveys – photo IDs, video tracking – and passive acoustic monitoring.

The Oris Blue Whale Limited Edition supports WDC’s work. Based on the Oris Aquis diver’s watch, it has a 45.50 mm stainless steel case water-resistant to 50 bar (500 metres), an aqua blue ceramic bezel and a graduated aqua blue dial. Inside it is an automatic Swiss Made chronograph movement, powering the first ever Aquis 3, 6 and 9 chronograph dial layout.

The case back carries an embossed blue whale and the limited edition number. Only 200 pieces will be made, and the watch is only available as part of the Oris Ocean Trilogy set, which comes in a special presentation box made of recycled PET plastic.

The Oris Ocean Trilogy is made up of three limited edition watches, each created to shine a light on a pioneering organization and the vital work it’s doing to either clean, protect or restore the world’s oceans and the source of all life – water.

The newly launched Blue Whale Limited Edition follows two watches already released: the Oris Great Barrier Reef Limited Edition III and the Clean Ocean Limited Edition. All three are based on the high performance Oris Aquis diver’s watch.

The Oris Great Barrier Reef Limited Edition III is the third watch made in support of work to conserve the world’s largest reef system. The Great Barrier Reef has been badly affected by two coral bleaching events in recent years, caused by hot summers that warm the ocean waters to levels that mean corals expel the algae inside them that provides them with food and colour. Unless water temperatures cool, the coral will die.

Oris Great Barrier Reef Limited Edition III

Through the Great Barrier Reef Limited Edition III, Oris supports the Reef Restoration Foundation, a non-profit running coral planting programmes using coral that has survived the bleaching events.

The third Oris watch named after the Great Barrier Reef supports the Reef Restoration Foundation. It has a 43.50 mm stainless steel case, a gradient aqua blue dial, a uni-directional rotating bezel, water resistance to 30 bar (300 metres) and a circular date window with a coral yellow indicator. It’s limited to 2,000 pieces.

The Oris Clean Ocean Limited Edition marks a partnership with Pacific Garbage Screening, which is working on a concept to capture plastic waste in rivers and estuaries before it reaches the ocean and turn it into energy using a spectacular floating platform.

Oris Clean Ocean Limited Edition

The watch supporting Pacifc Garbage Screening is a 39.50 mm time and date version of the stainless steel Aquis, and limited to 2,000 pieces. It has a gradient aqua blue dial, a uni-directional rotating bezel, water resistance to 30 bar (300 metres) and a medallion made of recycled PET plastic set into the case back.

The Oris Ocean Trilogy supports a trio of projects vital to the health of our oceans. It’s limited to 200 pieces and is presented in a special box made using recycled PET plastic.
