ORLO Ticonite – The World’s First Completely Scratch-proof Titanium Diver’s Watch

Lighter than stainless steel and resistant to corrosion, titanium is a great material for making sports and diving watches. Unfortunately, titanium watches scratch easily. For the first time in watch making, Danish brand ORLO utilizes the properties of Ticonite to enhance the scratch resistance of titanium watches.

Developed by the Technical University of Denmark, Ticonite is a revolutionary, completely scratchproof titanium material made with a patented surface hardening technology using heat and certain gasses in a highly controlled manufacturing environment. This gives Ticonite a surface hardness of 1200HV, without changing its appearance, and makes Ticonite 3-5 times harder than untreated conventional titanium and stainless steel. Ticonite maintains its superior properties in terms of strength, extreme corrosion-resistance, and incredible low weight.

Partnering with the Technical University of Denmark, ORLO is launching the first-ever Ticonite watch in the world – the ORLO Ticonite. The ORLO Ticonite is powered with a Miyota Caliber 9015, 24 jewel automatic movement. The watch is worn on a natural black rubber strap. Measuring 42 mm in diameter, this diving watch is super light and waterproof to 12 ATM (120 m). The watch features domed sapphire crystal glass, SuperLuminova dial and hands, and a screw case back and crown.

The ORLO Ticonite is available for Super Early Bird backers on Kickstarter at a price of USD 900. This is 50% off the suggested retail price of USD 1,800.

LOCMAN MONTECRISTO PROFESSIONAL

Consistently pursuing its strongly sporting vocation, the MONTRECRISTO watch by LOCMAN appears endowed with avant-garde technical features that guarantee an even higher level of sturdiness and water resistance.

Stemming from an in-depth research and development process conducted by the technicians and engineers or the S.I.O., the Scuola Italiana di Orologeria (Italian Watchmaking School) created in 2006, MONTECRISTO PROFESSIONAL is designed for immersion to great depths and for use in extreme sports.

Tested in real-life conditions by a team of professional divers in the waters of the Tuscan Archipelago, where LOCMAN is headquartered, and indeed actually facing the beautiful island after which it is named, MONTECRISTO PROFESSIONAL features a broad steel and titanium case guaranteed water-resistant to 120 metres thanks to a series of avant-garde protective devices for the screw-down crown, the chronograph pushpieces and the case-back secured by four screws.

LOCMAN MONTECRISTO PROFESSIONAL

MONTECRISTO PROFESSIONAL is equipped with either an elaborate mechanical self-winding movement or a quartz-driven chronograph movement. The assembly, adjustment and precision testing of this watch are performed in the LOCMAN laboratories by the technicians and master-watchmakers of the S.I.O.

In developing this mechanical movement, particular attention was devoted to the making of the oscillating weight, a determining element in the efficient automatic winding of the watch: built in a “heavyweight” alloy according to a patented design and coated with a black PVD treatment, the MONTECRISTO oscillating weight ensures perfect rotation when the watch is fitted on the wrist, including during the small movements typical of daily life. The mechanism is visible through a sapphire crystal pane fitted into the case-back.

The steel unidirectional bezel for measuring dive times is notched to ensure a better grip and facilitate adjustment even under water. The eminently readable dial is topped by a flat sapphire crystal with a magnified window positioned just above the date, secured to the case by a nylon gasket. The three-bar lugs connect the case to the steel bracelet or the breathable natural silicon strap with wrist vents.

Fitted with a folding clasp, the strap features a device facilitating length adjustment, which avoids the owner needing to have this operation done by a watchmaker or by the company itself.

MONTECRISTO PROFESSIONAL, whether in mechanical self-winding movement or quartz chronograph versions, is also available with an all black case coated with a deep black thin composite ceramic film: a state-of-the-art treatment that is ultra-resistant to both shocks and wear.

IWC Aquatimer Chronograph Edition Jacques-Yves Cousteau Ref. IW376706

IWC Schaffhausen, partner and sponsor of the Cousteau Society for many years, has created a special edition to mark the 100th birthday of Jacques-Yves Cousteau, the most influential ocean researcher and explorer in the 20th century.

The Aquatimer Chronograph Edition Jacques-Yves Cousteau is the fifth special edition created by IWC to honour the legendary scuba diving specialist. Jacques-Yves Cousteau, alias “Le Commandant”, who died in 1997, was not only a pioneer of underwater research but also a leading champion of the cause of protecting the world’s oceans.

IWC Aquatimer Chronograph Edition Jacques-Yves Cousteau Ref. IW376706

IWC Schaffhausen, whose first Aquatimer professional diver’s watch in 1967 actively promoted the increasingly popular sport, has maintained a partnership with the Cousteau Society since 2003.

Founded by Jacques-Yves Cousteau, the non-profit organisation works tirelessly to protect the world’s oceans. As part of its ongoing cooperation with the Cousteau Society, IWC is helping to finance the restoration of the legendary research vessel, the “Calypso”, as well as previously sponsoring a research expedition to the coral reefs of the Red Sea and honouring the great pioneer of the oceans with four limited special editions.

The fifth of these tributes, the Aquatimer Chronograph Edition Jacques-Yves Cousteau, commemorates the illustrious researcher and filmmaker on the occasion of his 100th birthday, which is celebrated on 11 June 2010.

IWC Aquatimer Chronograph Edition Jacques-Yves Cousteau Ref. IW376706

The 44-millimetre stainless-steel case is pressure-resistant to 12 bar and, with a slate coloured dial bearing Cousteau’s signature, high contrast white indices and blue totalisers, transforms the watch into an unmistakable statement on the wearer’s wrist. The chunky external rotating bezel can be turned – only anticlockwise for safety reasons – even when wearing gloves.

The four-millimetre-wide sapphire glass ring has six coatings of luminescent Super LumiNova®, guaranteeing optimum legibility and luminosity in any kind of visibility.

IWC Aquatimer Chronograph Edition Jacques-Yves Cousteau Ref. IW376706

Engraved on the back of the case is a portrait of the ever-popular Frenchman, encircled by the words “A Tribute to J.Y. Cousteau 1910–2010”. The Aquatimer Chronograph Edition Jacques- Yves Cousteau is secured to the wearer’s wrist by a black rubber strap.

IWC Schaffhausen Aquatimer Deep Two

The diver’s watch with a mechanical depth gauge makes a return after ten years in the form of the Aquatimer Deep Two, pressure-resistant to 12 bar.

Like its predecessor, the IWC GST Deep One from 1999, it shows not only the actual dive depth, but also the maximum depth reached during a particular dive. It thus doubles as a complete second safety system alongside the dive computer.

IWC Schaffhausen Aquatimer Deep Two

Whereas the GST Deep One was able to measure water depths down to 45 metres, the Aquatimer Deep Two features a semi-circular indicator on the dial, which records depths down to 50 metres. Its pressure measurement system is contained in a second large crown on the left side of the case. The water pressure acts directly on a membrane inside this crown and forces a pin into the interior of the case. This movement actuates a lever mechanism connected to the measurement hands.

However, only the raised tips of the hands at the level of the dial can be seen to move over the indicator scale through a semi-circular slot in the dial. The hands in this case are led around the movement. This is an ingenious solution, which avoids the need for the path of the arbors to pass through the movement.

The depth indicator (blue)moves over the white measuring field as the depth of water increases or decreases. The maximum depth indicator (red) always re mains at the greatest depth reached. It can be re leased by a button underneath the depth-gauge sensor crown on the left side of the case.

IWC Schaffhausen Aquatimer Deep Two

The new IWC Aquatimer Deep Two watch is the only member of the new Aquatimer family with a case diameter of 46 mm. It houses a 30110-calibre automatic movement with central seconds, date display and 42-hour power reserve.  This stainless steel watch comes with an elaborate relief engraving of a diving helmet on its case-back.

IWC Aquatimer Deep Two is available with a black rubber strap or stainless steel bracelet.

IWC Schaffhausen Aquatimer Chronograph Edition Boesch Ref. IW378204

Around 3,700 craft have been launched since 1920 by Boesch, the boatyard located on Lake Zurich. All made of wood. The reddish brown, highly polished mahogany is the mark of their exclusive craftsmanship. IWC presents a special edition of the Aquatimer Chronograph as a tribute to the iconic boat builders.

The watches from Schaffhausen share not only their high-quality craftsmanship with the exclusive motorboats from Kilchberg on Lake Zurich, but also an exclusive special position – they are built with passion. Similarly, IWC watches like the Aquatimer Chronograph, are also water sports enthusiasts through-and through.

IWC Schaffhausen Aquatimer Chronograph Edition Boesch Ref. IW378204

The colour scheme of the special edition “Boesch” is obvious: mahogany. As such, it emulates the air exuded by the genuine article, the sleek motorboats, which are now being built by Boesch in its fourth generation. Their hulls and structural parts are made only from mahogany, the traditional boat building timber, with its unsurpassed properties.

The IWC Aquatimer Chronograph Edition Boesch (reference IW 378204) adopts this feature on its dial. And reddish brown is extremely becoming. Even on the back with a mahogany inlay and a stylized marine screw propeller. On the front side, too, a small discreet signature of the second-generation owner –Walter Boesch – points to the exclusivity of this limited edition.

This Aquatimer Chronograph is built as a diver’s watch with a pressure-resistance tested down to 12 bar. For diving it is equipped with the patented IWC system with a rotating inner bezel for measuring the dive time. This can be synchronized with the minute hand via the dual function crown at “4.00” – but only in the “safe”, anti-clockwise direction. The crown also serves as a button for resetting the chronograph, which can be started and stopped with the button at “2.00”.

The crown for setting the time or for activating the automatic movement is of the screw-in type. The stainless steel case with its dimensions of 44316 mm (diameter/height) has a convex sapphire glass that is antireflective on both sides and is supplied with a brown rubber strap to match the colour of the dial.
