Makina is a Manila based watch brand founded by Danilo Villanueva Jr, a former advertising professional with a passion for mechanical timepieces.
An archipelagic country in Southeast Asia, The Philippines is home to a number of home-grown watch brands. Makina takes inspiration from industrial designs. The brand name itself reflects the true spirit of this Manila watch atelier. Makina means “Machine” or “Engine” in the Tagalog language, as in Spanish’s “Maquina”.
Its wristwatches are known for original, modern and refined characteristics. Makina follows a design philosophy of ‘simple but not minimalist’ for making the watches more vigorous. Secondly, the brand designs its timepieces with intentional imperfections for adding a lot of character.
Danilo Villanueva Jr utilises domestic talent to design, assemble, market and promote the wristwatches from his company. The brand never uses stock parts. All watch parts – from case, crown, dial, hands to strap – are custom designed and manufactured in Manila and Hong Kong. The customized automatic mechanical movements are sourced from Japan and Switzerland. Makina watches are assembled in both Manila and Hong Kong.
The brand’s flagship collections are: Uriel, Cassiel, Mephisto and Raum. Interestingly, all the four collections are named after named after angels and demons. Produced in small batches, Makina timepieces have been known for their industrial yet elegant look, masculine appeal and robust construction.
Manila based watch brand Makina has announced the release of a new Gabriel_I watch model with a salmon-colored sector dial.
This elegant dress watch features a 40mm diameter stainless steel case offers a modern interpretation of the sector dials of by the bygone era. To reduce the clutter, the two tone dial does not feature any numerals. The hour, minute and small seconds hands are finished in blue tone to enhance the visibility and overall appearance.
Mounted with a domed sapphire crystal glass with five layer AR coating, the watch offers a crystal clear view of the dial. Made of brass, the diamond-cut hands are enhanced with blue-plating. The seconds sub-dial stands out with its circular guilloche decoration and clean layout without any markers.
The sector dial has many circles, starting from the silver small seconds counter with a black border to the salmon-colored outer dial-ring with minute markers. The brand has cautiously used black, blue, silver and salmon colors to highlight the various dial details while ensuring the legibility and overall harmony.
The distinctive shaped case boasts a harmonious combination of polished and brushed surfaces. The new Makina Gabriel_I watch is powered by the Swiss Made Sellita SW 260-1 calibre.
Visible through the blue tinted exhibition case back, this automatic movement provides a power reserve of 38 hours to this time only wristwatch. Water resistant to 100 meters, this model is paired with a navy blue, genuine crocodile strap.

Manila based watch brand Makinapresents its latest model, Gabriel_I. This is a contemporary dress watch features a 40mm diameter steel case and a dependable Swiss self-winding movement.
Its case boasts a distinctive octagonal silhouette. It is just 11.9mm thick. The top and bottom surfaces are completely flat in striking contrast with the rounded off sides with wire lugs.
Gabriel_I boasts an elegant two-tone dial, representing the brand’s modern interpretation of the classic sector dial design.
The watch features white inner-dial, silvered outer-dial and black markings. The hour and minute hands are centrally positioned. A subsidiary dial is placed at 6 o’clock for accommodating the small-seconds hand. This is the first Makina model with a small seconds function. This circular guilloche decorated sub-dial does not feature any markers/indices to ensure optimum simplicity.
Gem-cut and made of brass, all the three hands are blued, providing a striking contrast to the dual-toned dial. The domed sapphire crystal glass with AR coating offers unobstructed view of the eye-catching dial features.
Beating inside this timepiece is the Sellita SW 260-1 Swiss automatic movement. Popularly known for its reliability and precision, this calibre provides a power reserve of 38 hours.
The case back is provided with a blue tinted glass offering the view of self-winding movement. The watch has a water resistance of 100 meters. It comes fitted on a black genuine crocodile leather strap.

Introduced in 2017, MEPHISTO is an automatic watch produced by Filipino watch brand Makina in a limited series of 500 pieces. It has a 42mm stainless steel case with an automatic Miyota movement beating inside.
Topped with a flat sapphire crystal glass, the three-dimensional dial in blue sunburst color features cut-out and embossed surfaces to display Arabic numerals and geometric shaped hour-markers.

Manila based watch brand Makina presents Raum_I, a new automatic timepiece that blends elegance, industrial design and sportiness. Its stand-out features are its atypical case design, innovative dial lay-out and unusual positioning of the crown.
Founded by Danilo Villanueva Jr, the young watch brand’s flagship collections are named after demons and angels. According to demonology, Raum is a demon known for his masculine and mischievous characteristics as well as the ability to tell things in past, present and future.
Dressed in a solid stainless steel case inspired by the shape of a tank, Raum is the most masculine watch from the brand. Its case measures 42mm in diameter and 48mm lug to lug length. Featuring an angular yet curvy profile, it features alternate brushed and polished finishing.
Beneath the scratch-proof sapphire crystal glass, the watch highlights a distinctive dial inspired by inspired by revolver’s cylinder that houses multiple cartridges chambers. The dial uses Arabic numerals to represent odd hour-markers.
The even hour numbers are marked with concave shapes coming out of the dial’s innermost circle. The watch displays hour, minutes and minutes. Centrally positioned, the gold-plated brass hands not only harmonize with the dial color, they also add character and unpredictability to the timepiece.
The case construction of Makina Raum is somewhat different from regular wristwatches. It has a main case body in stainless steel. Topped with a sapphire crystal, it houses the movement. The time-setting crown is placed at 6 o’ clock of the main case body.
Also made of stainless steel, the caseback of the Raum_I watch is actually one piece with the sides and lugs. It is secured with six screws to the main case and features an exhibition window.
Raum_I is the first Makina watch to be equipped with a Swiss made movement. Visible through the transparent window on the case back is the Sellita SW 200-1, a work-horse automatic calibre known for its reliability and precision.
This 26 jewel self-winding movement provides 38 hour power reserve. It beats at 28,800 vph (4Hz) and features hacking seconds function, hand-winding provision and anti-shock mechanism.
The Makina Raum_I Automatic watch is water resistant up to 50 meters. It comes fitted with a hand-made, hand-stitched genuine crocodile leather strap. An extra silicone strap will be provided for enhancing the versatility. Reliable and easily adaptable to multiple roles, this sporty dress watch is also an excellent daily beater.
