Finnish independent watchmaker Juha Eskola presents N1, a hand-wound mechanical watch with a beautifully executed moonphase complication.
Originally from Ostrobothnia, Juha Eskola moved to Leppävaara, Espoo, in 2015 to attend the Finnish School of Watchmaking. As a student, he had crafted the first prototype of the N1 watch, with a moonphase complication on top of the ETA 6497 movement.
Now, as a watchmaker, he has started commercial production of this mechanical watch that fuses the traditional watchmaking with the enchanting beauty of the night sky and the moon.
The Juha Eskola N1 watch is equipped with Calibre 109, an exclusive mechanical movement incorporating a modified Swiss Cal. ETA 6497 and a moon phase module.
The backside of the movement is dominated by the hand-made three-quarter plate German silver bridge. The bridge is hand-hammered, bevelled and polished by hand. Hand engraving and gold plating on the balance cock is the final touch on this elegantly designed movement.
The watch comes with a textured dial with hand-made applied hour markers carefully tempered to a perfect golden tone. The glass bead blasted dial boasts a perfectly uneven yet refined texture. True to its origin, below the watchmaker’s name, it reads “Leppävaara,” the home of the Finnish Watchmaking School.
The stainless steel hands are hand-made without using modern techniques like laser cutting and CNC. Sawn out of stainless steel plate and filed into the desired shape, the hands are a true showcase of traditional craftsmanship. To match the hour markers, the hands are carefully tempered into a perfect golden tone.
Each timepiece has a 3D printed 316L stainless steel case. After 3D printing, the case is hand finished with lathe, files and sandpaper. In the finishing state, polished and brushed surfaces are applied for contrast. The moderate diameter of 41.7mm and purposefully designed lugs ensure that the case is a good fit for most writs.
N1 features multiple different finishes. All finishes are purposefully selected, from the elegant black polishing on the screw heads to the rugged hand-hammering in the three-quarter plate bridge of the movement.
One of the trademark finishes of the watch is the golden tempering colour. It’s on display, not only in the hands and hour markers, but also on the selected parts and screw heads.
Each watch is made to order with the estimated delivery time of 3 months, depending upon the workload of the watchmaker.
