Unveiled at the Goodwood Festival of Speed 2023, the new boutique exclusive Excalibur Spider Flyback Chronograph by Roger Dubuis features a massive 45mm C-SMC carbon case with an innovative mechanical movement beating inside it.
Roger Dubuis is the Official Timing Partner of the Goodwood Festival of Speed 2023, and this new model celebrates the brand’s association with hyper cars.
The special features of this timepiece are SBS (Second Brake System), column wheel and vertical coupling clutch mechanisms, and 120° RMC – Rotating minute counter. Other highlights include floating tachymeter scale, lower date display, and raised seconds hand.
With a design inspired by hyper sports cars, the Excalibur Spider Flyback Chronograph is made of materials (carbon, ceramic and rubber) used in the motorsports industry.
This integrated flyback automatic chronograph comes with two patents: one linked to the second hand of the chronograph and the other to the display of the minute counter. The calibre also features a column wheel, a tilted balance with variable inertia and a vertical coupling clutch.
The skeletonised movement affords the view of intricate components, including the much admired column wheel mechanism, which is visible from the dial side at 6 o’clock. Beating at 4 Hz, the Self-winding Calibre RD780 offers a power reserve of 72 hours.
Visible through the transparent caseback, the chronograph vertical clutch mechanism evokes the gear-system of supercar design. The clutch is also equipped with an innovative Second Braking System (SBS), which significantly decreases flicker and brings extra stability to the chronograph seconds hand.
Moreover, the Roger Dubuis Excalibur Spider Flyback Chronograph boasts a 120° Rotating Minute Counter (RMC) at 3 o’clock. Just like the Monovortex™ concept watch, the minute counter includes a patent-pending tripartite hand that carries the 0, 1 and 2, accurately rotating past the 0-9 digits on the right.
Tilted at 12°, the balance wheel at 9 o’clock has raised its level of inertia to the same standard as a tourbillon. This ensures protection from shocks and negative effects of gravity. Meanwhile, the diamond-coated silicon escapement wheel paired with diamond-coated silicon pallet-stones enhances anti-magnetic qualities.
The case in lightweight carbon reveals a perfect combination of sharp lines and signature notches – and a symmetry that is typical of the Excalibur Spider collection. Along with skeletonised pushers, the case is matched by a shock-resistant and fade-proof ceramic bezel.
The rotor has been shaped with five arms, like the rims of a supercar’s wheel, and accentuated with the signature sharp lines of Roger Dubuis.
The Excalibur Spider Flyback Chronograph comes with a black rubber strap, which is notched for extra volume. On the inner layer, a distinctive pattern recalls screeching tyre marks, while the Quick Release System ensures the wearer can change the strap in seconds for more versatility.
Backed by Poinçon de Genève certification, the Excalibur Spider Flyback Chronograph is a boutique exclusive timepiece.
