Swiss luxury watch brand Cuervo y Sobrinos pays tribute to the celebrated writer Ernest Hemingway by introducing three limited edition Historiador watches.
Born on 21st July 1899, Ernest Hemingway was a long-time and loyal customer of Cuervo y Sobrinos. In 2022, the brand launched a limited edition Historiador Hemingway watch collection as homage to the Nobel Prize–winning author.
Under the patronage of John Hemingway, grandson of the writer, the new Historiador Hemingway collection was launched in Key West, Florida during the Hemingway Days 2023.
Cuervo y Sobrinos’ origins date back to 1882, when Ramón Fernández Cuervo, an immigrant from northern Spain (Asturias), together with his grandchildren founded the Cuban company in Havana. Today the company is based in Switzerland and produces luxury watches inspired by the brand’s spiritual homeland, Havana. Many of Cuervo y Sobrinos’ modern models feature retro styling and echo the vibrant hues of the Cuban capital.
Hemingway spent more than 20 years in Cuba and deeply loved the country for its Latin identity, the same identity that pervades and animates Cuervo y Sobrinos watches. The Cuervo y Sobrinos models are the first Swiss watches to be officially licensed by Hemingway Limited, an organization dedicated to this immense literary figure.
Hemingway lived in Cuba at “Finca Vigia” for 20 years from 1939 to 1960. While residing in Cuba, the literary genius often visited the Cuervo y Sobrinos boutique. Now, the watch brand known for its Latin soul has chosen to honor the American writer, a longtime and loyal customer of the company, with a new series of watches produced in collaboration with Hemingway Limited.
The new Historiador Hemingway collection includes three watches: the ‘Icónico’ model that is offered in two color variants and the GMT model called ‘The Fisherman’.
Cuervo y Sobrinos’ creative team selected vintage-inspired shades for the first model, such as soft cream and tobacco tones, colors that surely surrounded Hemingway during his Cuban sojourn.
The Fisherman model features a deep blue dial as a tribute to The Old Man and the Sea. This novella by the American author was written in Cayo Blanco (Cuba) and was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1953.
The three models in the Historiador Hemingway collection boast a license officially granted by Hemingway Limited, an organization that manages the Ernest Hemingway© brand, founded by the writer’s eldest son, Jack, in 1988.
With a diameter of 40 mm, all versions of this new timepiece feature a stainless steel Historiador case, chosen for its vintage-inspired look and its ergonomic, elongated lugs.
As for the ‘Icónico’ model, the stainless steel case-back is engraved with the Hemingway logo, in homage to the legendary American novelist. A color-coordinated leather strap and a CyS-branded buckle securely fasten the watch to the wrist.
The Fisherman model, on the other hand, comes with 2 straps: a denim blue Cordura strap and a metal bracelet. Its sapphire crystal exhibition case-back reveals the movement. The oscillating weight is also engraved with Hemingway’s logo again to pay homage to the writer.
The pointer date hand of the ‘Icónico’ model has a Marlin fishtail shape tip. It also has the engraving placed inside the crown that features the writer’s quote “In order to write about life first you must live it” in English (at 12 o’clock) and Spanish (at 6 o’clock).
The quote placed inside the crown of the ‘Fisherman’ model is “Every day is a new day, it is better to be lucky” also in English and Spanish.
Each watch in the Historiador Hemingway collection will be supplied with special packaging. Cuervo y Sobrinos has designed a limited series of elegant leather watch boxes, reminiscent of the shape of a book, which can be used as a watch case, but can be slipped into the bookcase just like a book.
The Historiador Hemingway Icònico Limited Edition watch is available cream in brown dial versions, both in a limited edition of 882 pieces. The Fisherman GMT model is a limited edition of just 288 pieces.
