Spinnaker has released the new Bradner Bascom, a limited edition watch that fuses the neo-vintage silhouette with modern flair. This automatic stainless steel wristwatch features a forged carbon fibre dial glazed in hues of matte black and reflective grey.
This timepiece pays tribute to Willard Bascom, who first proposed using Neoprene for wetsuits to fellow scientist, Hugh Bradner. Between Bradner and Bascom the development of the wetsuit helped develop scuba and other ocean bound activities in the 1950s.
Forged carbon is composed of tiny carbon fibre composite materials that are moulded and “forged” at a high temperature with a resin hardener. As a result, a strong, lightweight material is produced, which is an excellent choice for high performance engineering.
The forging process results in a distinctive and well-liked speckled effect on the surface. This effect is created by the random placement of carbon flakes, which leads to unique patterns on each section of the dial.
Spinnaker’s watchmakers access this material layering luminous powder throughout, before CNC cutting dial blanks, which are eventually printed upon and laid with indexes prior to final assembly. The resultant luminously charged dial ensures a striking look for each timepiece and backgrounds the luminous on the index and hands.
Bascom features a lock solid, compressor like case with a signature 3-dimensional inner turning bezel framing the watch. Measuring 42mm in diameter, this diving watch offers 180m of water resistance.
The Spinnaker Bradner Automatic Bascom watch comes with two crowns, one at 2 o’clock for operating internal rotating bezel and another at 4 o’clock for setting the time and date.
Inside each timepiece beats the Japanese TMI Seiko NH35 automatic 24-jewel movement that offers a power reserve of 41 hours. Beating at 21,600 bph, this self-winding calibre also features hand-winding option, Diashock protection, and hacking seconds function.
In addition to displaying the time with central three hands lay-out, it offers the date at 3 o’clock.
The Bascom features a new 3 link bracelet for a slightly sleeker and more modern look, that has been designed to also retro fit other versions of the Bradner.
The crown at the 2 o’clock position is made of anodized aluminium whereas the principal crown at 4’o clock is in solid marine grade stainless steel.
The Spinnaker Bradner Automatic Bascom watch is available in three colour styles: Steel Carbon, Medallion Carbon and Stealth Carbon.
The Steel Carbon watch features stainless steel case and bracelet, red crown at 2 o’clock and blue crown at 4 o’clock. Its retail price is $390 USD.
The Bradner Automatic Bascom Medallion Carbon model has gold-toned stainless steel case, crowns and bracelet. It costs $430 USD.
The Stealth Carbon variant comes with black toned stainless steel case and bracelet, red crown at 2 o’clock and black crown at 4 o’clock. This model retails at $430 USD.
