Seiko Prospex The 1965 Diver’s Re-creation, Reference SJE093J1

Seiko presents Prospex Reference SJE093J1, a brand-new re-creation of the iconic 1965 Diver’s watch 62MAS. Dressed in a 38mm diameter stainless steel case, the re-issue of Seiko’s (also Japan’s) first diver’s watch houses a newly developed slimline movement with automatic winding.

Introduced in 1965, Seiko 62MAS was the Japan’s first-ever diver’s watch. Rated for a water resistance of 150 meters, this iconic timepiece was used by members of the Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition from 1966 to 1969.

The new re-creation of 62MAS (reference SJE093J1/ JDM number SBEN003) comes from the Seiko Prospex scuba diver family. Its design and dimensions are almost identical to the original 1965 model, while its specifications are modern.

The Seiko Prospex SJE093 (SJE093J1) Scuba Diving watch houses the Seiko Automatic Caliber 6L37, the first movement from the slimline 6L family made specifically for the brand’s diver’s watches. The ultra-thin profile of the movement makes the watch 0.5mm thinner. Moreover, this 26 jewel calibre offers a power reserve of 45 hours.

Built according to the modern specifications and water-resistant to 200 meters, the new Seiko 62MAS re-issue model comes with a box-shaped sapphire crystal.

All the hands and hour-markers, including the marker by the date window and the pip on the unidirectional bezel, are filled with Lumibrite to enhance legibility in low-light conditions.

The screw-in stainless steel case-back features the same dolphin emblem as the 1965 watch, and the limited edition serial number.

The strap takes inspiration from the original but is reproduced in high-strength silicone for greater durability and comfort.

Each Prospex SJE093J1 diving watch will be delivered in a retro-styled special box inspired by the exclusively made boxes of the 1960s Seiko diver’s watches.

The 1965 Diver’s re-creation is a limited edition of 1,965 pieces worldwide; among them 500 timepieces are reserved for Japan domestic market. It will be available at the Seiko Boutiques and select retail stores worldwide from August 2023.
