Rolex upgrades the Oyster Perpetual Sky-Dweller range with a new generation movement (cal. 9002) and aesthetic enhancements. Unveiled at Watches and Wonders 2023 event in Geneva, the new Sky-Dweller will be available in 18K gold (Everose, white or yellow) and Rolesor versions.
Introduced in 2012, Sky-Dweller is an elegant wristwatch dedicated to frequent travellers. It combines the dual time zone function with the annual calendar complication. To equip this innovative mechanical self-winding timepiece, Rolex developed the Calibre 9001.
Sky-Dweller displays the time in two time zones simultaneously. The reference time is displayed in 24-hour format via an off-centre disc, and local time is read using the conventional centre hands.
The annual calendar, named Saros, is operated by a patented mechanism and stands out for its innovative display: the months of the year are shown in 12 apertures around the circumference of the dial, beyond the index hour marker – the current month being shown in red. The instantaneous date change is linked to the local time.
The Sky-Dweller includes the Ring Command system, an interface between the rotatable bezel, winding crown and movement that allows the wearer to select and set the timepiece’s functions one by one, easily, quickly and securely.
Since its launch in 2012, this timepiece has been admired by fine horology connoisseurs and high-profile globetrotters. The new Sky-Dweller debuted this year has replaced the first generation (326XXX) of this prestigious traveler’s watch.
Sky-Dweller New Generation
The Rolex Sky-Dweller new generation series comes with calibre 9002, which is an evolution of calibre 9001 launched in 2012.
This self-winding mechanical movement delivers outstanding performance in terms of precision, energy efficiency, convenience and reliability. Calibre 9002 incorporates innovations like Chronergy escapement, blue Parachrom hairspring, Rolex overcoil, high-performance Paraflex shock absorbers and oscillating weight with an optimized ball bearing. Moreover, it has a power reserve of 72 hours.
Just like its precursor, Calibre 9002 displays the date and the month, as well as an additional time zone in 24-hour format, and the hours, minutes and seconds.
Rolex is offering a wide range of models from the new Sky-Dweller collection. Firstly, this new generation is available in 18K gold Everose, Yellow and White gold versions. Additionally, the brand has created White Rolesor (Oystersteel with white gold) and Yellow Rolesor (Oystersteel with yellow gold) variants. Depending upon the reference, Sky-Dweller comes with Oyster, Oysterflex or Jubilee bracelets.
Numerous dial choices are available such as blue-green, bright black, bright blue, intense white, mint green, champagne, chocolate and slate. All models have 18K gold index hour markers with the exclusive Chromalight luminescent application that offers a long-lasting blue glow.
The 42 mm Oyster case of the new-generation Sky-Dweller is waterproof to a depth of 100 metres (330 feet). It also features typical attributes like the screwed down case back featuring fine fluted edges, Twinlock winding crown with a double waterproofness system, and AR treated sapphire crystal glass with a Cyclops lens at 3 o’clock for easy reading of the date.
