In 2023, Seiko will be celebrating the 110th anniversary of the first wristwatch made by its factory. To mark this historic event, the Japanese watchmaking giant has proposed a limited edition Presage watch inspired by the Laurel, Japan’s first wristwatch.
Seiko’s illustrious journey began in 1881 when Kintaro Hattori opened a shop in Ginza to repair and sell timepieces. In 1892, he opened a factory called Seikosha to produce his own clocks. In 1913, his company produced Japan’s first wristwatch, the Laurel.
In 2023, Seiko will celebrate the 110th anniversary of its first wristwatch with the release of a series of commemorative timepieces. The celebration starts with the 1913 Laurel inspired Seiko Presage watch reference SPB359.
Limited to 2,500 pieces, the Presage 110th anniversary of Seiko watchmaking model recreates the form and design of the iconic Laurel watch in every detail. The round case is carefully constructed to retain the elegance of the original while housing a modern automatic movement.
The characteristic Arabic numerals, the retro-style blued hands, and a large onion crown are also faithfully re-created, in keeping with the nostalgic feel of this special timepiece. Just as with the 1913 original, the Seiko Presage SPB359 boats an immaculate enamel dial. The distinctive design of the number four is re-created on the dial.
In addition to the centrally-positioned hour, minute and second hands, the dial hosts a power reserve indicator at nine o’clock and an analogue date indicator at six o’clock. The box-shaped sapphire crystal glass with anti-reflective coating on the inner surface offers high legibility of the dial from any viewing angle.
Inside this commemorative watch beats Seiko’s high-performance Caliber 6R27 with automatic movement. This 29 jewel movement offers a power reserve of 45 hours.
This timepiece comes with movable lugs and a pull-through leather strap for maximum comfort and durability.
The Seiko Watchmaking 110th Anniversary Seiko Presage Limited Edition will be available from January 2023 at Seiko Boutiques and select retail partners worldwide.
