Phillips to Present the F.P.Journe Tourbillon Souverain “China 2010”Limited Edition in The Hong Kong Watch Auction: XIV

Following the announcement of selected highlights from The Hong Kong Watch Auction: XIV, which will take place on 27 and 28 May, Phillips has announced an additional highlight that will be featured in the sale – the F.P.Journe Tourbillon Souverain “China 2010” limited edition in platinum.

The present example features a red lacquered dial displaying the five stars as seen on the national flag of China is one out of the five examples created to commemorate the opening of F.P. Journe Boutique in Beijing in 2010. It is exceedingly rare and important due to its bold design and important commemoration of one of the brand’s most important markets.

Established in 1999, F.P. Journeis determined by collectors around the world as one of the few grails of the world of haute horology. Epitomizing connoisseurship and exclusivity, Journe timepieces are exceedingly rare with an extremely low annual output of less than 1,000 pieces worldwide.

As one of the most exceptional contemporary watchmakers, the founder Francois-Paul Journe has successfully blended the perfect balance of art and mechanical engineering, with an emphasis in creating innovatively sound complications, functions, paired precisely and logically with its finishing and materials.

Since 2002, F.P. Journe has been awarded a total of 7 awards at the prestigious GPHG. Among which, he was granted the highest award, Aiguille d’Or “Golden Hand”, at the GPHG in 2004 for the F.P. Journe Tourbillon Souverain, the first tourbillon wristwatch paired with remontoire in history.

In 2010, F.P. Journecelebrated the opening of their boutique in Beijing at a prime location located in the Yintaï Centre, being the 6th boutique worldwide following Tokyo, Hong Kong, Geneva, Paris and New York.

To commemorate the memorable milestone of the brand, F.P. Journe created an exclusive limited edition series of 5 Tourbillon Souverain timepieces with deadbeat seconds, remontoir d’égalité, and power reserve indication.

The present lot also features a vibrantly colored red lacquered dial displaying the five stars as seen on the national flag of China, replacing the hour units for the power reserve indication as seen in regular examples of the model. This was the first ever Tourbillon Souverain to feature a red dial.

In 2014, F.P. Journe was chosen as the official horological patron for the diplomatic relations between France and China for over 50 years, further solidifying his status as the best in the industry, not only in the western part of the world but also the up and coming region of Asia, more specifically China.

Based on the research of Phillips’ specialists, only 2 of the 5 examples made, including the one to be offered in the upcoming Hong Kong Watch Auction: XIV, is known in private hands, making the lot distinctly rare.

The present example is furthermore well-preserved and complete with its full set of accessories. Not only a testament to the importance of the Chinese market to F.P. Journe, but also a piece of horological art and the most iconic Journe complicated wristwatch ever made.
