Christie’s Watches Online: The Dubai Edit – First Online Sale of the Season Passes the US$ 12 Million Mark

Christie’s Watches Online: The Dubai Edit (16 – 29 March 2022) achieved a total of US$12,001,500 and thus laying down an early marker for the season. There was global participation close to 700 registrations over the bidding period.

Leading the sale was a superb Patek Philippe Ref. 3974J, which achieved US$ 567,000. It was followed by two rare versions of Greubel Forsey’s GMT Sport, one in blue and the other a one-off in red, selling well above estimate and retail price.

The Patek Philippe Ref. 3974J Minute Repeater Perpetual Calendar is one of the most important grand complication timepieces ever to be produced in series by Patek Philippe. The Ref. 3974 was launched in 1989 to celebrate the brand’s 150th anniversary and was the world’s most complicated wristwatch at the time.

Only 160 or so were made, the majority in yellow gold. Early examples, such as the one sold, featured a case made by the legendary Jean-Pierre Hagmann.

A few records have been set by at the season-opener including the US$214,200 paid for the unique Patek Philippe Ref. 3940G with a custom pink gold dial commissioned by Michael S. Ovitz, renowned collector and former head of Disney Inc. This is now the most expensive Ref. 3940 sold at any auction.

F.P. Journe lead the rally of the independents with an early rose gold Tourbillon Souverain with brass movement selling for US$504,000 and a Chronomètre à Résonance Black Label realising US$403,200.

A pair of Greubel Forsey GMT Sport including a unique execution in red, both fresh to market, returned impressive results too. While the GMT Sport Blue sold for U$478,800, the unique GMT Sport Red realised a price of US$ 504,000.

It was a great sale for collectible Rolex models – the exclusive ‘Rainbow’ Daytona Ref. REF. 116598RBOW sold for an impressive US$441,000, a vintage yellow gold Daytona Ref. 6265 ‘Oyster Split’ fetched US$252,000 and a rare Day-Date Ref. 18168 with an impressive Bloodstone dial realised US$201,000.
