The independent, family-owned German watch company Wempe Glashütte I/SA expands its Iron Walker collection by adding a new GMT model.
Introduced in 2020, the Wempe Iron Walker series debuted with a strikingly sporty stainless-steel watch with an integrated metal wristband. The Iron Walker GMT is the latest addition to this successful collection.
Watches that display a second time zone often face a challenge in daily use: The second display doesn’t always indicate whether it’s day or night at the other location. The solution is to have either a 24-hour scale or a day/night indicator.
Wempe cleverly combines both functions in the chronometer-certified Iron Walker GMT. For one thing, it has an inside 24-hour scale that is mounted behind a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal to protect it from jolts and inadvertent changes of the settings.
For another, the high-contrast two-color scale shows the day and night periods of the second time zone. Style-conscious customers can choose between two color combinations on the dial: either an elegant black-and-silver variant or an upscale version in black plus an assertive orange that suggests sunrises and sunsets.
Thanks tot his accentuated design of the different time zones, the watch has an inimitable and powerful look.
Optimal readability of the black dial, even in the dark, is guaranteed by the central hands for the hours, minutes, and seconds and for the second time zone, which are filled with Super- LumiNova® luminous mass, as well as by the raised steel hour markers.
The stainless-steel case, which provides side protection for the two crowns, is limited to a 42-millimeter diagonal size, which is pleasant to wear. The GMT model also features another characteristic element of the Iron Walker line: an integrated stainless-steel wristband with a folding clasp and a safety catch. The three rows of links in the wristband are tapered to provide customized wearing comfort.
The ability to adjust the 24-hour scale by means of a separate crown is a user-friendly extra, while the GMT hand with its striking arrow tip can be zapped through the time zones using the main crown. The main crown is also used to set the date by means of the quick correction feature and to trigger the stop-seconds function in order to precisely set the time.
The optimized Wempe Glashütte I/SA self-winding movement, which is based on a reliable Swiss caliber, guarantees 42 hours of operating time. In another quality feature, the adjustment is so precise that the caliber passes the stringent German chronometric testing procedure with a maximum average rate variation of only two seconds per day when mounted in the case.
