Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador 1519

Swiss luxury watch brand Cuervo y Sobrinos celebrates its birthplace, Havana, with the release of the new Historiador 1519.

The history of Cuervo y Sobrinos is intertwined with that of Cuba. The watch brand chose the name ‘Historiador’ in recognition of Dr Eusebio Leal Spengler, Havana’s official Historian, demonstrating the importance the watch firm places on history and traditions.

Established in 1882, Cuervo y Sobrinos began life on Calle de la Amistad in the heart of Havana. As the firm enjoyed increasing prosperity, it moved to larger premises and also established offices in Europe. However, while Cuervo y Sobrinos has witnessed change over the years, it has always remained inextricably linked to Havana, a city that was founded in 1519.

Originally called San Cristóbal de La Habana, the city is known for its cornflower blue skies, the rich aroma of Cuban cigars and the hypnotic sounds of Latin music. Havana is the spiritual home of Cuervo y Sobrinos and for this reason the company has chosen to celebrate the year the city was born with the release of the Historiador 1519.

Classical Breguet-style hands converse with applied faceted indexes, conveying the hours and minutes in highly lucid form. The baton-type central seconds hand and date complete the inventory of functions. Everything is clear and succinct and no information is superfluous.

The central area of the dial is enlivened with a guilloché motif, presented in art deco style, imbuing the dial’s surface with a bewitching, sumptuous texture. The ‘Key of the New World’ is part of Cuba’s coat of arms and has been depicted beneath the fulcrum of the dial. Cuervo y Sobrinos has also adorned the movement’s oscillating weight with the three castles that feature on Havana’s flag.

The dial encompasses numerous tasteful details, each enriching the overall appearance. For example, the minute track is presented on a fluted circlet, while an applied CyS emblem, incorporating shades of gold and red, is positioned at noon.

Cuervo y Sobrinos has equipped the Historiador 1519 with the CYS 5104 calibre, an automatic Swiss movement based on the Peseaux 224. The movement is decorated with Côtes de Genève and perlage.

When designing the Historiador 1519, Cuervo y Sobrinos delved into its vast archives and took inspiration from some of its former models produced in the 1940s. The resultant case design echoes the styling of this era, but subscribes to modern tastes with its generous diameter of 40mm.

The steel case is highly polished, accentuating its gently arcing contours. The elongated lugs project from the case, causing the watch to sit squarely upon the wrist, thereby delivering impressive levels of wearer comfort. The model features a double curved sapphire crystal enticing light to flood the dial surface, augmenting readability.

The Historiador 1519 is available in three dial variants, including dark blue, silver with a blue circlet and silver with a brown circlet. All models are presented on a high-gloss Louisiana alligator strap.
