Bühlmann Decompression 01

Switzerland based crowd-manufacturing company Watch Angels SA has launched a new fund-raising campaign for the Bühlmann watches brand.

This new watchmaking venture pays tribute to Albert Alois Bühlmann (1923 – 1994), the Swiss scientist known for his extensive research activities related to both medical and safety requirements of deep divers.

The first timepiece from the brand is Bühlmann Decompression 01, which incorporates the famous Bühlmann tables that are based on the decompression algorithm developed by A. Bühlmann.

Exclusively designed for professional divers, the Decompression watch features a Bühlmann 0-700 ASL decompression security stops bezel and an innovative push lock-unlock system to lock and unlock the crowns and the helium valve.

The decompression tables are indented for ensuring safety during commercial, military and recreational diving activities.

About Albert Alois Bühlmann

Born in 1923 in Berlin, Professor Albert Alois Bühlmann was a respected doctor and scientist at the University Hospital in Zürich, Switzerland. He was a world-renowned Diving Medicine Physician, and dealt with the medical conditions associated with diving and their treatment. He was a pioneer in developing Hyperbaric Chambers, Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicines, Decompression Tables and Dive Computers.

His decompression model and gas mixture procedure were utilized efficiently during a number of record-breaking diving and hyperbaric experiments.

These include 1959 Lake Zürich, Switzerland (120M), 1961 Brissago, Switzerland (220M), 1962 Catalina Islands, California (311M), 1966 Porto San Stefano, Italy (220M exposure to saturation), 1969 Alverstoke, UK (350M exposure to saturation) and the 575M record in the Zürich hyperbaric chamber in 1981.

Professional divers play an important role in the offshore oil and natural gas exploration industry. In 1963, Bühlmann had entered into a partnership with Anglo-Dutch multinational oil and gas company Shell and Micoperi to develop safe decompression procedures for professional divers on long-term dives to great depths.

Now owned by the Norwegian business group Protan, Micoperi is an Italian engineering and installation company specialized in the offshore oil & gas industry. A notable result of this collaboration was the Capshell in 1966, a hyperbaric chamber designed for long-term under water experiments.

In the early 1970s, he developed altitude-adjusted decompression tables for the diving activities conducted in the lakes located at high attitudes. In the meantime, he also supervised to replace the existing hyperbaric chamber with a new one in the University Hospital of Zurich.

Put into operation in 1975, the new Druckkammer (hyperbaric chamber) had capability to perform dive experiments up to a depth of 1000m. Its ancestor’s diving depth was limited to 300 meters. Bühlmann used these hyperbaric chambers to calculate decompression algorithm.

In the 1980s, Bühlmann ventured into the field of decompression computers. He had collaborated with companies like Divetronics, Dynatron AG and Uwatec AG for developing dive computers. For example, his calculation model ZHL-16 was used to develop the Deco-Brain II dive computer by Divetronics. The diver computers born from his collaboration with Dynatron AG and Uwatec AG were Aladin (1987), Aladin Pro (1988) and Aladin Air X (1994).

Bühlmann passed away on 16 March 1994.

The ZH-L16A calculation model was published in 1986. His decompression tables are still popular and widely used. Many dive computers use variations of the decompression algorithms created by Bühlmann.

About Bühlmann Watches

To revive the legacy left by Albert Alois Bühlmann, Zürich based watch development and design company Cronatec LLC has partnered with Watch Angels SA, the Swiss firm specialised in the crowd-manufacturing of timepieces.

The Cronatec team members behind this project are:

  • Adrian Stahel: Project Manager and Entrepreneur.

  • Thomas Bühlmann: Lawyer and Son of Albert Alois Bühlmann.

  • Daniel Wechsler: Owner and Managing Director of DAW Consulting GmbH.

  • Patrick Rohner: Owner and Managing Director of MAD AROMA.

Based in Mendrisio, Switzerland, Watch Angels SA is a family-owned watch manufacturer. Its crowd-manufacturing platform allows the creators to launch a new watch brand (or to revive a historical one) with the help of horology enthusiasts. Watch Angels SA’s other projects include the crowd-manufacturing of timepieces for creators like Cedric Bellon, Waltham and Thomas Funder.

Bühlmann Decompression is a Swiss made, professional-grade diving watch with an external bezel featuring the Bühlmann decompression scale to manage security stops and an internal rotating bezel for calculating Actual Diving Time.

Its solid 46mm diameter case is made of 316L stainless steel. Developed, manufactured and hand-assembled in Switzerland, these diving watches house Sellita automatic movements.

All Bühlmann Decompression 1 watches feature an inclination of 5 degrees for ensuring optimal dial readability for diving. The other special characteristics are push lock-unlock bezel for the screw-in crowns, screw-in helium valve, Fly-no fly indicator, Sapphire crystal with AR coating, Screwed case-back and Flexible strap joints on the 12 o’clock.

Decompression 1 is available in various dial color versions. The 0 to 15 scale of the inner ADT (Actual Dive Time) bezel is highlighted by a contrasting color.

The initial production campaign is offering two versions of Bühlmann Decompression 01 diving watch: the BH-01 Automatic Small Seconds and the BH-02 Automatic.

These watches are presently available via the crowd-funding platform managed by Watch Angels SA. This campaign is offering a discount of CHF 400 for all models.

Bühlmann Decompression 1 BH01 Small Seconds

This deep diving wristwatch has a water resistance of 575 meters, evoking the record-breaking pressure chamber test No. 373 in the hyperbaric chamber laboratory at the University of Zurich in 1981.

The BH01-01 Small Seconds model is equipped with Sellita SW261 automatic movement. This version features a large arrow-shaped central minute hand, a small seconds dial at 3 o’ clock and a disc based hour-indicator at 9 o’ clock. All the markers, indices and hands are embedded with the luminous material.
