URIEL is a Hong Kong based watch brand. Its debut watch model is T-521. It was developed by the watch design firm TEAM 1 DESIGN LIMITED, which won the Red Dot Design Award 2016 for their Navigator 1 watch under the Design Concept category.
URIEL T-521 was not intended as a commercial project, but as a first step to test market feedback. Earlier this year, the brand launched two timepieces for the general market. These tool watches are inspired by the iconic Ford GT 40 sports car and come with attractive color themes.
The URIEL GT 40 is an automatic three-hands with date watch equipped with the Japanese Miyota 9015 movement. GT 40C is a chronograph wristwatch driven by the Seiko(TM) VK64 meca-quartz calibre. Both timepieces feature 316L stainless steel case with 42mm diameter and fitted with double-domed sapphire crystal glass.
Lug to lug length is 51.5mm and lug width is 22mm. The notable characteristics of these watches include sandwich double layer dial, rotating inner bezel and Italian leather strap. The inner rotating bezel can be used as a countdown/mission timer for calculating elapsed time during diving, flying, motorsports etc…It can also be used for tracking an additional time-zone.
The GT 40 watch has a distinctive twin-crown design inspired by the iconic super-compressor watches, with two crowns at 2H and 4H respectively for adjusting the inner rotating 12H bezel and time/date setting. In addition to the hour, minute and centre seconds hand, this model displays the date at 4 o’ clock.
To illuminate the dial during low visibility, the GT 40 incorporates green (C3) Luminova on the hands and indexes and blue (BGW9) for 3, 6, 9 numerals and the brand name at 12H. Among the 12 illuminated arcs (each one represents five minutes) forming a ring between the main dial and inner bezel, the first four (0/60 to 20) have dark-orange lume and the remaining 8 have green glow. In this timepiece, both hour and minute hands are the so-called lollipop-style where as the minute hand is syringe-shaped.
The GT 40C (chronograph) also highlights a super-compressor style case design, with a time-setting crown at 3 o’ clock, the crown for operating inner rotating 12H bezel at 10 o’ clock and two pushers at 2H and 4H. This model has a classic bi-compax dial layout with 60 seconds dial at 9 o’ clock and 24-h register at 3 o’ clock. Both sub-dials are overlapped by a tachymeter scale.
GT 40C model indicates the date via a window at 6 o’ clock. The sword-shaped hour and minute hands, hour-marker indices and the long, lollipop-pattern centre chronograph seconds hand feature green Luminova. Among the 12 arc-shaped 5-minute markers, first three (0 to 15) feature dark-orange lume and the remaining have green Luminova.
In both timepieces (GT 40 and GT 40C), the dial features a red dot and name of the design studio – TEAM 1 DESIGN – between 7 and 8 hour markers. URIEL offers two versions of the GT 40 automatic watch: Onyx and Wine.
The GT 40C chronograph is available in three versions: Navy, Turquoise and Salmon. Depending upon the version, the stainless steel case features silvery, gold/ bronze-toned or black finish. Water resistant up to 230 meters, both models are secured with solid stainless steel case-backs.
The retail price of URIEL GT 40 automatic watch is HKD 3,550 (USD 458). The URIEL GT 40C quartz chronograph retails at HKD 2,750 (USD 355).
