Artisans de Genève – The Mika Häkkinen Challenge

Bespoke watch specialist Artisans de Genève has created a customized Rolex watch for Double Formula 1 world champion Mika Häkkinen.

Artisans de Genève - The Mika Häkkinen Challenge

Christened the Mika Häkkinen Challenge, this unique watch is the perfect blend of the classic watchmaking codes and the high-speed world of Formula 1. For this project, Artisans de Genève has modified a Rolex® Daytona reference 116520. The unique timepiece created for Mika Häkkinen boasts a skeletonised dial with highlights of orange and light blue, two dynamic shades inspired by the racing tracks.

The titanium dial is entirely openwork—a new symmetrical design reminiscent of car racing exclusively developed for the champion.

The hour and minute hands are sandblasted in the center and polished on the outside, and the second hand makes a statement with its hand-painted orange arrow. The bezel boasts a patented titanium finish exclusively developed by Artisans de Genève.

An orange border was added to the middle of the crown, giving the customization a sporty edge. To embody the fusion of codes, Mika’s timepiece comes with an oyster bracelet and a navy alligator leather strap.

The 4130 movement of Mika’s watch has been skeletonized in homage to a Formula 1 engine—a design that demanded extreme precision, finesse and an exceptional performance. Each piece has been cutout, sandblasted and angled by hand.

Every element conjures the spirit of a race car. Mika Häkkinen wanted to combine this bold design with a manual winding movement, a trademark of vintage watches. Artisans de Genève removed the automatic device and replaced it with a mechanism offering a 72-hour power reserve.

The original case back has been replaced by a titanium one with sapphire crystal, allowing the skeletonised caliber to be seen underneath.
