Marloe Watch Company ‘Atlantic’ Chronoscope

British watch brand Marloe Watch Company presents ‘Atlantic’, a new watch collection that pays tribute to the dawn of transatlantic air travel. The Atlantic collection includes four distinct chronoscopes inspired by dawn of air travel: R34, Flyer, Fortune and Spirit.

Marloe Watch Company ‘Atlantic’ Chronoscope Model R34

As an exclusive first release, a limited number of the R34 model, each engraved with its unique serial number, will be available for purchase on the lead up to Christmas. The rest of the collection is also available to pre-order for delivery early next year.

Marloe Watch Company ‘Atlantic’ Chronoscope Model Flyer

Those placing an order ahead of Christmas will receive a collectable card with a personal message from Marloe’s founders and exclusive content documenting the development of the watch and its airborne inspirations.

Marloe Watch Company ‘Atlantic’ Chronoscope Model Fortune

When designing the Atlantic collection, there was a particular focus on the story of the R34 airship – a forgotten chapter in aviation history. Built near Glasgow and launched from a Scottish airfield, the R34 went on to become the first airborne craft to complete, without incident, a double-transatlantic crossing.

Marloe Watch Company ‘Atlantic’ Chronoscope Model Spirit

Each model in the collection features a polished and brushed bespoke casing with an anti-reflective sapphire crystal. The chronoscope is equipped with a powerful Seiko NE88a automatic mechanical movement.

The NE88 a movement offers a power reserve of 45 hours and a timing mechanism built within the chassis to offer a 12-hour chronoscope function. The flagship of Seiko’s movement range also features a date complication, both automatic winding and manual winding, hacking, quick-set date, shock protection and a very respectable accuracy for keeping precise time.

Over the years of design and development, the blueprint for the Atlantic chronoscope was based upon the design of the R34. This R34 model takes direct inspiration from its namesake airship, with a quilted dial echoing the deep blue/green hue of the airship’s envelope. This timepiece features contrasting sub-dials and an outer perimeter of silvery-white offer clarity and separation of purpose.

East Fortune Airfield, the launch pad for the R34’s journey across the Atlantic, is now a racetrack. As a result, the Fortune model boasts race car colours, with a palate of black and white with red accents. The sporty ‘Panda’ dial is simple and clean, with a silvery-white face, applied 12 index and name plate, and raised outer chapter ring.

The Flyer version is based on the traditional “Flieger” style aviation watch – bold, stark and simple. The design incorporates the traditional aspects of this aviation style with elements from the R34 airship’s altimeter. It features tangential 4-8 numbers, white-on-black colouring as well as glowing markings by way of Superluminova C3 luminescent paint.

The Spirit model again takes on the traditional “Flieger” style, but applies a raw, aluminium aesthetic. This colourway takes inspiration from the steel and silvery fabric of Charles Lindbergh’s Spirit of St. Louis aircraft that completed the first ever solo crossing of the Atlantic in 1927. The radial sunburst pattern of the Spirit’s dial is contrasted by gunmetal hands and white sub-dials.

The Marloe Watch Company Atlantic Chronoscope collection is priced at £975 and comes in blue, black, panda and aluminium watch face finishes.
