LIV Saturn V Collection: The Saturn V Moon Lander Chronograph and the Saturn V Moon Dust Automatic

Swiss watch brand LIV has announced a new watch collection that celebrates NASA’s epic quest to build the Saturn V, the largest and most powerful rocket to ever break the grip of Earth’s gravity. Introduced in the 1960s, the Saturn V remains the tallest, heaviest, and most powerful (highest total impulse) rocket ever brought to operational status.

LIV Saturn V Moon Lander Chronograph hands on

The exciting history of Saturn V has inspired LIV to create a watch collection named after this super heavy-lift launch vehicle. This new watch collection offers two distinct timepieces: The Moon Lander and the Moon Dust.

LIV Saturn V Moon Dust Automatic

First one is a quartz chronograph, and the second an automatic. Both these timepieces are crafted by fusing specific design elements of the Saturn V Rocket and the moon landing.

The Moon Lander is a collection of Swiss made quartz chronographs with date and moon-phase function. This timepiece incorporates some design features inspired by the Saturn V, like the rocket fin styled chronograph push-buttons and the Saturn V F1 engine inspired crown.

Further, these watches also feature moon-dust inspired dial texture. The movement powering these timepieces is ETA G10962EO PWD quartz calibre.

Made with 316L Stainless Steel, the Moon Lander chronograph is available with the option of three case finishes: Steel, Black Steel and Rose Gold PVD.

The ETA G10.962 EO PWD Lunar Phase used in the Saturn V Moon Lander Chronograph is accurate to within +/- 10 seconds per year. The Moon Lander quartz movement boasts 4 jewels, a bit of a rarity in quartz movements.

The LIV Moon Lander chronograph features a 3D-embossed case back depicting Saturn V making its way to the Moon.

Each Saturn V Moon Dust watch houses a Swiss Made SW200-1 self-winding movement, which can be admired through the transparent caseback. This movement uses 26 jewels and vibrates at the rate of 28,800 beats per hour.

All the timepieces from the Saturn V collection features the Rocket inspired cases carefully crafted from 316L stainless steel or  bronze with titanium. The 4-stage case construction consisting of case back, case, anodized aluminum ring, and bezel symbolizes the four main stages on the Saturn V rocket.

Extensive use of gaskets and screw-down case backs and crowns will ensure water resistance to 100 meters (330 feet). AR coated sapphire crystal provides a clear view of the signature LIV multi-layered dial and the display of time. Further, each LIV Saturn V timepiece employs the Swiss-Made Super-LumiNova BGW9 on hour-indexes, hour hand, and minute hand for optimum readability in dark conditions.

On May 25, 1961, President Kennedy issued NASA the challenge of putting a man on the Moon before the end of the decade. On July 20, 1969, NASA met the challenge when the lunar module, Eagle, landed safely in the Sea of Tranquility. It was a remarkable feat, perhaps the most significant of the twentieth century.

On 16th July 1969, at 9:32am (EDT), a massive rocket blasted off from the Launch Pad 39A of Cape Kennedy, Florida. This 363-foot tall (about 36 stories) rocket carried the Apollo 11 lunar module with astronauts Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins, and Edwin E. (Buzz) Aldrin, Jr. The powerful ‘Heavy Lift Vehicle’ that played in this historic event was Saturn V, developed by NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. The Saturn V rocket was also used to launch Skylab, the first United States space station.
