With this new diving timepiece, ALBANY watches pays tribute to the legendary Ama divers of Japan. Known for their unmatched under-water survival skills, Ama divers follow one of the oldest free-diving traditions in the world. These fearless underwater pearl collectors do not wear scuba gear or carry air tanks; instead they use a traditional cloth, mainly in white color. This custom has been followed since ancient times.
Albany creates timepieces inspired by lesser-known adventurers celebrating a time when the world was full of wonder and exploration. Their latest diving watch pays tribute to the 2000 year old tradition of Ama divers. The brand has recently launched a Kickstarter campaign to promote their new watch collection.
Inspired by the good old days of sea exploration, the Ama Diver follows the design codes of the 1960’s skin divers. The design is sleek and original yet familiar. Measuring 40mm diameter, the 316L brushed stainless 60’s skin diver styled case provides a water resistance up to 300m. All Ama divers are depth tested during manufacturing and after assembly.
Comfortable to wear, the watch case comes with drilled lugs for easy strap changes and a 7mm fully lumed (Swiss Super-LumiNova® BWG9) ergonomic screw-down crown that’s easy to grip. The crown also features the Albany cormorant, a symbol of nobility and bounty.
The Ama divers watch was launched on 13 October 2020 with three dial versions : Black Pearl, Bathys Blue and Abbys Black. They have also added a fourth dial version featuring a Sunburst Dial as the campaign achieved the 45K stretch goal with in short time. The watch hands represent the Ama’s dive tools, from the knife-like hour and spear-shaped minute hands to the signature harpoon seconds hand.
The Ama Divers subdued black hour- hand, teal minute-hand emphasized for enhanced practical use, and harpoon seconds-hand make the Ama Diver easily readable. Swiss Super-LumiNova® BWG9 has been applied to all three hands, indices, and crown for legibility in all conditions.
The Ama Diver watch is topped with an anti-reflective domed crystal made from scratch resistant sapphire crystal. At 41.5mm, the 120-click unidirectional bezel is easy to grip and extremely precise with no back play. The bezel insert is also made from scratch resistant sapphire crystal.
The Ama Diver is equipped with the Miyota 9039 self-winding movement. Beats at 28,800 vph, this automatic caliber manufactured in Japan provides a power reserve of 42 hours.
The screw-down caseback of the watch features an engraving inspired by Iwase Yoshiyuki’s photography of Ama divers from his village, circa the 1950s. This beautiful engraving portrays a sensual image of a lady Ama diver.
Respecting its Japanese inspiration, each Ama Diver watch will be supplied in a bamboo box embossed with the Albany logo. The brand also offers a double-waxed canvas watch roll to protect the watches safe from scratches. ALBANY watches have also committed to set an ethical example in the watch industry by producing premium yet sustainable items. So its products incorporate regenerated and biodegradable materials designed with an emphasis on durability and an extended lifespan.
The ALBANY AMA Diver watch is available in three bracelet variations: Single piece Eco Weave Nato strap with signature ALBANY stainless steel engraved buckle, Italian Nubuk leather strap with engraved buckle in steel, and brushed stainless steel beads of rice bracelet with micro-adjustable clasp and end links.
The Kickstarter online crowd-funding campaign, which ends on 03 November 2020, is offering three different editions to choose from: Ama signature series (starting at $299), Ama Upgrade edition (starting at $350) and Ama PVD Night Dive edition, which is a limited series of 150 pieces with price $ 449.
