Werenbach Soyuz 01 Collection: Soyuz 01 Automatic & Soyuz 01 Superlative Automatic Editions

Swiss watchmaker Werenbach transforms salvaged space rockets into prestigious timepieces. The brand has recently announced their latest Soyuz 01 watch, made from the upcycled aluminum from a booster on the Soyuz rocket that flew Sergei Valeriyevich Prokopyev, Alexander Gerst and Serena Auñón-Chancellor up to the ISS on June 6, 2018.

The brand has launched a Kickstarter crowd-funding campaign for the promotion of this new watch collection. This is the third online crowd-funding project by the Zurich based Swiss watch brand that was founded by Patrick Hohmann in 2012. The design for the new collection was chosen in a survey that 6,000 fans participated in.

This collection is available in two different movement versions: the Soyuz 01 Automatic Edition and the Soyuz 01 Superlative Automatic Edition. The basic collection incorporates the Sellita SW200 whereas the superlative models have a high-end mechanical Soprod Newton movement.

Sellita SW200

The Sellita SW200 Swiss mechanical movement by Sellita is a new generation of the legendary and probably highest-selling mechanical movement in Switzerland, the ETA 2824. Sellita is famous as a manufacturer of robust and proven Swiss movements.

The Newton is a new high-end movement in premium quality developed by Jura-based manufacturer Soprod.

This latest generation Swiss-made mechanical movement is distinguished by its excellent precision and a ‘bridge’ over the balance. Bridges like these are generally only found in luxury brands that are manufactured to the highest standards of Swiss ‘haute-horlogerie’. The bridge also improves the watch’s shock resistance.

Both versions offer same display layout: Three central hands (hour, minute & seconds) and a date window at 3 o’ clock. The models powered by the Sellita SW200 automatic calibre provide a power reserve up to 38 hours with a precision of -/+ 19 sec. day. The Soprod Newton is a premium-grade automatic movement that provides a power reserve of 44 hours with a precision of -/+ 6 sec. day.

The dial also indicates some interesting details dedicated for the fans of space and rocket technology. The dial of all Soyuz 01 watches is stamped with the words ROCKET MATERIAL and below that you will find the coordinates (45° 38 N 63° 19 E) of Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, the launching port of Soyuz rockets.

The outer dial ring is inscribed with the details like attitude and flight duration related to the stage III of Soyuz rocket launch: ORBIT- 8.49 MIN – 207KM. An illustration of the Soyuz rocket launch is given below.

These Werenbach timepieces feature stainless steel cases (black DLC coating is used for the Soyuz 01 Superlative Deep Black model) measuring 41.2mm diameter and 9.5mm thickness. Front glass is sapphire crystal with AR coating.

The case back of each Soyuz 01 Edition watch features a small porthole styled glass-window that offers the view of the balance wheel, the heart of the movement. In comparison, the case back of the Soyuz 01 Superlative Edition is fitted with a large sapphire crystal that offers a clear view of the movement rear side.

The Soyuz MS-09 was launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome on June 6, 2018 with three astronauts on board, heading for the International Space Station. Those astronauts were: Sergei Valeriyevich Prokopyev (Russia), Alexander Gerst (Germany) and Serena Auñón-Chancellor (USA).

Werenbach Soyuz 01 Superlative Deepblack

All Werenbach watches are made from real-life rocket material obtained from spent Soyuz rocket boosters and fairings, which are jettisoned back to Earth from an altitude of 45 and 85 kilometers respectively, where they are personally selected and recovered from the Kazakh steppe by the company founder.

Werenbach Soyuz 01 Superlative Raw

The legendary Soyuz rockets took the first astronauts and satellites up into space. Known for their dependability, they have been flown more often than any other rocket and are still in service today. The Werenbach timepieces satisfy the most stringent of quality criteria and come with a 5- year warranty.

By supporting the Werenbach Soyuz 01 Kickstarter campaign, the customers can acquire the timepieces of his/her choice in a greatly discounted price range. For example, the Kickstarter price of each Soyuz 01 model is CHF 539, which is approximately 44% less than its suggested future retail price (CHF 979).
