The Singapore brand Kaal Watch was founded by three experienced professionals in the field of watchmaking: Alvin Lye, Jessie Yeo and Alvin Lew.
Alvin Lye is the co-founder and an executive director of Azimuth, the avant-garde Swiss luxury watch brand renowned for its iconic designs like Mr. Roboto and The Spaceship. Jessie Yeo, who is also the better half of Alvin Lye, is the co-owner of watch brand Trifoglio, whose popular watch collections include the Radiocity, Millimetro and Veloce. Alvin Lew has been an active watch blogger and reviewer at Micro Brand Watch World.
The word Kaal means “Time” in Sanskrit. The founders of Kaal Watch have avid interest in the space themed watches. The first creation from the brand is called the Multiverse which comprises three distinct automatic watch models appropriately called Gaea, Sol and Artemis which is Greek for Earth, Sun and Moon.
Each of these watches has a 3D half globe depicting the surfaces of the planet Earth, the Sun and the Moon. The half globe is suspended over the dial by a bridge inspired by the bridge like structures of combat spacecrafts featured in sci-fi movies.
Under the suspended globe, you can discover the northern star with a red outline and Super LumiNova center which doubles as the minute hand. The hour is read via a rotating transparent hour disc that rotates clockwise and hovers over a layer of blue Aventurine stone as the base dial. The second hand is depicted as a 45-degree satellite orbiting each individual globe.
In line with the theme of space and space travel, the case is designed to resemble an imaginary spaceship showcased in The Jetsons, the famous American animated sitcom of the 1960s.
The 316L surgical steel watch case of the Multiverse watch features a super cool double domed sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating.
The case back is embossed with an inspiration of the solar system and features a small, porthole styled exhibition case back that showcases the balance of the movement.
On the surface of the lugs, you will notice what looks like shooting meteorite hurtling through space embossed on the top surfaces of the 4 lugs. To finish off this space theme, Kaal also added a star screw on the side of the case near the end of each of the 4 lugs.
Each Kaal Watch will be fitted with a genuine Horween leather strap (Black or Brown) which is recognized as one of the best if not the best material for straps. Each strap will have white stitching down the length of the strap on each side. The length of the straps is 120mm/80mm which tapers down to a 20mm buckle size. Lug size is 22mm in width.
The brand is planning to launch their first collection through 2 modes of orders. In the early September 2020, the brand will start taking the pre-orders via the official website for US$369 for each timepiece. Following this, the brand will launch a Crowd-funding campaign on Kickstarter with a special discount price starting from US$399. The retail price for the watch will be US$699. Delivery of the watches is scheduled between March / April 2021.
