Fears Watch Company

The Fears Watch Company Limited, known as “Fears”, is one of Britain’s oldest family-run watch companies, first established in 1846 by Edwin Fear in Bristol. The business ran for 120 years until it closed in the late 1960s.

In 2016, the brand was re-established by Edwin Fear’s great-great-great-grandson, Nicholas Bowman-Scargill. Presently, the Fears Watch Company is located in the historic city of Canterbury, where the watches are designed, before being hand built in both Britain and Switzerland.

The Brunswick takes its name from Brunswick Square in Bristol where the company’s export warehouse was based from 1920 – 1942. The Redcliff takes its name from Redcliff Street in Bristol where the company was originally founded in 1846.

Milestones since 2016

November, 2016: On the 3rd November, during its 170th anniversary, the Fears Watch Company Limited, known as “Fears”, re-launches at the SalonQP watch exhibition in London. Having previously run for over a century, the company has lain dormant for almost 60 years, and is now re-established by the original founder’s great-great-great-grandson. The re-launch model is Redcliff date.

April 2017: Fears launches made-to-order strap and bespoke engraving service.

2019: Fears Watches establishes the new ‘Fears Heritage’ Division. The brand collaborates with Romney Marsh Wools for wool straps and Pickett London for creating leather watch accessories.

February, 2020: Fears Watches partnered with the UK Government’s GREAT Britain campaign, which highlights the best the country has to offer the world. The announcement comes as Fears concludes production of its final Quartz powered watch at the end of February 2020. Since the launch of the mechanical Brunswick in 2017, Fears has been slowly moving towards an all mechanical watch line up.

Going forward all Fears watches will be powered by mechanical movements and, like the Brunswick, will be hand built in the UK. Fears builds its watches in the East Anglian city of Norwich using bespoke components made in Germany (cases & dials), Switzerland (movements &winding crowns), UK (hands and strap leather), Hong Kong (sapphire crystals) and Belgium (straps).
