Travailler Matin Collection

Singapore based watch brand Travailler Et Jouer presents MATIN, its flagship watch representing the brand’s philosophy in creating handcrafted artisanal timepieces while making art accessible to all. Each watch is presented in a ‘tear-drop bullet’ lug case; also made in-house, and created using state-of-the-art technology and engineering.

The MATIN collection offers three dial variants, a black lacquered dial, a silver guilloche dial, and the Grand Feu enamel. The flagship Grand Feu enamel uses real Grand Feu techniques, from powdering, to multiple kiln-firing and polishing, a repetitive and painstaking task.

The effort of all these labor is to bring out the most natural color, tones and variation of the enamel. In homage to the French origins of the Grand Feu technique, Travailler manufactures the dial with the same powder supplied to industry leader Donze, and similar techniques from purifying the base plate to firing and finishing.

The Matin Enamel Blue is the flagship of the manufacture’s collection. It is the first ever enamel dial made using traditional grand feu techniques in the region. Matin Enamel Blue in a stainless steel case, with stainless steel plume hands and a black alligator strap.

The Matin Enamel is a classic timepiece with a traditional choice of tear drop lugs and an enamel dial. Keeping to tradition, the Enameling methods used on the Matin Enamel are modelled on the Grand Feu method used in high-end watchmaking. The enamel powder is sourced from UK and powdered onto a base dial and fired in a kiln at 700 degrees. Each dial is fired multiple times to several layers to create a consistency in tone, variation, colour and purity. After each round of firing, the dial is filed and levelled.

Throughout this process, there is a high chance of failure from dial bending, cracking and uneven layering from the enamel melting. Grand Feu enamelling is labor intensive and extremely time consuming, but the end product is unparalleled beauty; far superseding the Epoxy enamel or Industrial enamel methods used in watches around this price range.

Each dial is hand-made from a base sheet of copper metal and powdered enamel. The finished product is unique and no two dials are the same.

Contrasting hour markers are pad printed to the dial, a manual process which requires the utmost attention to detail and skill from the dial maker. A white coat of paint outlines the hour positions, with just the right formula to achieve a desired viscosity and texture.

A series of 5 print compressions is used to print the words and markers on the dial. Each pad compression deposits a fine layer of ink on the dial. The dial is left to dry completely before another press at the exact same spot on the dial. This process is repeated for 5 times till the print layer is thick enough to resemble a resting ‘water droplet’.

If the layer of paint was too thin, the black from the dial would be visible through the more translucent white hour markers. The painted markers would look bland and flat on the dial. On the other hand, a thick coat of paint increases the chance of ink bleeding, accompanied with a more tedious drying process.

In the Matin Black, Travailler uses a deep black lacquered dial set to the Matin case. The classic design of the dial and case and adds the finishing to the cake with a dash of blue. The dial is polished to a high gloss, and has a glossy polished finish.

In the Matin Guilloche, Travailler uses a rare guilloche motif on a silver dial. The overall design of the dial is reminiscent of a sector dial, with elongated applied indices that stretch from the minutes track to the center circle, dividing the dial by the hours. With the center of the dial distinguished with Guilloche, the periphery of the dial is frosted.

With an elaborately decorated dial, the applied hour indices are contrastingly classic. While simple in appearance, the steel indices are not designed without flair; each piece is finished with a 9 sided polish and applied by hand. The finishing touch to the silver dial is a set of heated blue steel hands. All three hands, hours, minutes and seconds are heated blue, in the shape of a classic plume.

From the dial to the case, Travailler’s watches are hand-made and hand-finished and produced in-house. The Matin collection is now available for purchase at http://www.travaillertimepieces.com. Prices range from USD $900 to $2000. The watches are finished and assembled in Singapore. The enamel dial is fully made in Singapore with imported raw materials. The movement is Swiss.
