Mühle Glashütte New Teutonia Sport I with Tachymeter

In the 1920s, the company Mühle & Sohn started to manufacture the highly sought-after Glashütte Mühle speedometer. With its impressive tachymeter function, the new Teutonia Sport I timepiece pays tribute to this legend produced during the heyday of major automotive manufacturers in Saxony.

The red and black design of the original Teutonia Sport gave it a very Italian feel. The new Teutonia Sport I, on the other hand, reflects the German auto racing spirit. With its sleek silver design, you can’t help but remember the historic Grand Prix racing cars of the Saxon Auto Union racing around the track. In fact, with Horch, DKW and Wanderer, R. Mühle & Sohn once supplied three of the four brands in the group with its equally legendary Glashütte Mühle speedometers, as well as car clocks and rev counters.

This new Mühle chronograph watch appeals to both car lovers and watch connoisseurs, especially due to the automotive design of its highly functional face. The main highlight of its design is the face’s bi-compax layout, which features a small-second display at the 9 o’clock position and a 30-minute counter next to 3 o’clock.

Just like the speedometer and rev counter in its four-wheeled counterpart, the timepiece’s totalisers are perfectly incorporated into its stylish face with stunning “Clous de Paris” embossing. The fact that the borders of these totalisers slightly slope down towards the centre of the dials adds to the watch’s automotive look.

Another highlight that puts the Teutonia Sport I in pole position is its tachymeter function. Its scale is located on the flange of the watch and can be used to measure average speeds based on a distance of 1000 metres.

With a speed range stretching to as fast as 300 kilometres an hour, this handy function should be able to keep up with even the speediest racing cars around. True petrol heads will also love to measure lap times with the chronograph function, which boasts accuracy right down to the nearest eighth of a second thanks to the watch’s movement frequency of 4 hertz or half-oscillation rate of 28,800 per hour.

The chronograph is set in motion by a large start button that stands out due to its distinctive circumferential blue line and, just like the watch’s volute-shaped lugs, its finely polished surface, which forms a stunning contrast with the middle section of the case. As is typical of the Teutonia family, the middle of the case features a vertical finish that is carefully applied by hand.

The blue shade of the button is also used to define the timepiece’s CVD-coated (chemical vapour deposition) hands and indices, as well as its tachymeter scale and second division. On the second scale, three fine indices are used to divide a second up into four even smaller units, thus enabling clear and precise measurements of as little as an eighth of a second. If the stopwatch hand stops directly on one of these fine blue lines, it gives a clear reading of two, four or sixth eighths of a second. If it comes to a halt between the indices, you can read the time recorded to the nearest one, three, five or seven eighths of a second.

With the Teutonia Sport I, stop times and above all the current time are not only easy to read but also extremely precise thanks to Mühle’s reliable MU 9419 chronograph movement. This impressive piece of equipment contains the company’s patented particularly shockproof woodpecker neck regulation and is meticulously regulated in six different positions and set to ensure accuracy values of between 0 and a maximum of +8 seconds per day.

The movement is also fitted with the company’s very own three-quarter plate, including the Glashütte click and an extra-special feature in the form of Mühle’s blue anodised anniversary rotor. With such a multitude of highlights, this new chronograph ticks all the boxes as a top-quality Mühle watch.
