Hemel HF5, HF6 and HF7

Hemel reveals three exciting new references to the widely acclaimed HF (Hemel Flight) Series of aviation inspired watches. Two of the new references are a variation of Hemel’s Stratus model.

The first, reference HF6, is powered by the Seiko VH31 sweeping quartz movement that beats at 4 ticks per second. The second, reference HF7, is powered by the automatic Miyota 9039 that hacks and hand winds beating at eight ticks per second.

The sweeping quartz is identified on the dial by the word “ELECTRONIC” while the Miyota has “AUTOMATIC” printed just above the six. The different movements are also identified by inscription on the screw down case back.

The final new piece, reference HF5, was christened the Brabant. It features the Seiko VK61 movement. Similar to the Seiko VK64 powering Hemel’s HFT20, the VK61 offers a timing hand sweep by way of a geared module sitting on top of a quartz engine.

Dubbed “mecaquartz” movements, the Seiko family of VK movements continue to be popular mainstay of the Hemel brand. For the Brabant, the chronograph subdials are arranged vertically.

This adds variety and a contrasting option to the horizontal subdial arrangement found in the original HF design. The Brabant also has a secondary chapter ring nestled around the dial to create a “roulette dial” appearance. This secondary ring continues a twenty-four-hour scale, perfect for military time.

All three pieces share an identifiable form factor shaped in 316L brushed stainless steel with shaped downward curving lugs. The lug design employed by Hemel provides for greater comfort and fit to any wrist shape or size.

The flat sapphire crystal has anti-reflective coating, and the signed crown is diamond shaped for greater ease of operation, particularly with gloved hands. Both the dials and the diamond cut steel hands along with the bezel are embedded with Superluminova C3.

The straps are all hand crafted from Italian leather. As these straps age, they soften and darken while conforming to the wrist and fitting much the same way a pair of denim jeans wear-in to fit comfortably and look great.

The inclusion of a ceramic inlay instead of the usual aluminum for the 120 click unidirectional rotating bezel reasserts Hemel as an Extreme Value Proposition in the marketplace.

The dials are all informed by mid-century fighter plane cockpit dials with numerals hand drawn by Hemel’s founder and Chief Designer, Marvin Menke.
