With its impressive watchmaking heritage spanning over 240 years of history, Swiss watchmaker Perrelet is renowned today for its timepieces with ‘animated’ dials. Characterised by the iconic Double Rotor and Turbine models, these fascinating timepieces were developed in honour of founder Abraham Louis Perrelet, the precursor of the first self-winding movement. As heirs of the grand watchmaking master, every model in Perrelet’s collection bears an automatic manufacture movement.
Guided by creativity and a determination to innovate in watchmaking, the technical team at Perrelet presented the first automatic movement with a Double Rotor in 1995. Requiring five years of R&D, the Double Rotor has become the flagship style of the brand.
The new “First Class Double Rotor Black Edition” is the latest model in the First Class line. Entirely designed and produced in Perrelet’s manufacture, it benefits from patented Double Rotor technology with a double oscillating mass that allows the automatic mechanism to accumulate energy from the two rotors.
The first oscillating mass is placed under the calibre, while the second is visible on the dial allowing the owner to observe the energy supply to the movement. The perfectly synchronised rotation of the rotors feeds the barrel and provides the mechanism with a steady flow of energy, ensuring a high-performance charge.
Perrelet’s latest creation, with its view of the harmonious ‘dance’ of wheels and gears inside the beating heart of the watch, was conceived for aficionados and collectors who appreciate fine mechanics.
The “First Class Double Rotor Black Edition” is presented in a steel case with a 42mm diameter and treated – for the first time in this line – with black PVD. The case is water-resistant to 50m/5ATM. The lines of the case are fluid with rounded, bevelled lugs decorated with a vertical satin-brush finish and a contrasting polished bezel. The middle case is decorated with a combination of polished and brushed grooves as is the crown, which is personalised with an engraved Perrelet logo.
Underneath a slightly domed sapphire crystal is the skeletonised dial allowing a generous view of the manufacture movement. Calibre P-481 is an automatic movement beating at 28,800 vph with a 42-hour power reserve. The bridges and plates are rhodium-plated and decorated with a frosted finish. The double oscillating mass on the dial side is open-worked, rhodium-plated and embellished with a refined Côtes de Genève finish.
One of the rubies in the movement is visible in the centre of the rotor and in addition to avoiding wear and tear from friction, provides a vibrant touch of colour. The transparent caseback, with an anti-reflective sapphire crystal reveals the main rotor, which is also open-worked, rhodium-plated and engraved with the Perrelet logo.
The central hour, minute and seconds hands are crafted in 4N rose gold as are the applied baton indices (double baton markers at 12 o’clock). The rose gold elements stand out beautifully against the black ring with its guilloché decoration featuring subtle grooves that echo the same colour as the minutes track.
The winning combination of black with rose gold and silver and the touch of ruby red in the centre of the rotor confer a sophisticated air to the dial making it a perfect timepiece for formal, elegant occasions.
The “First Class Double Rotor Black Edition” is a limited edition of 240 pieces with each corresponding number featured on the caseback. The watch is presented with a black crocodile strap and a folding clasp embellished with the brand’s logo and subtle grooves on either side to match the design of the case.
