With the new limited edition Seiko 1970 Divers Re-creation model, the Japanese watchmaker pays tribute to one of the iconic diving watches.
The original 1970’s Seiko diver’s watch was known for the reliability, durability, precision and legibility that serious adventurers required.
The uniqueness of its design stemmed largely from the way that the crown, moved to the 4 o’clock position, was protected by the extension of the case around it. A subsequent version of the watch with this same characteristic case design developed a worldwide following and earned the affectionate and unforgettable nickname of the “turtle.”
This innovative design was both memorable and functional. This 150 meter water resistant diver’s watch rapidly found favor among those who needed a watch of exceptional strength. Japanese adventurer Naomi Uemura wore this timepiece when he did a solo dog-sled run from Greenland to Alaska, a journey of 12,000 kilometers that took eighteen months.
Seiko 1970 Divers Re-creation Limited Edition, Prospex Reference SLA033J1
Today, Seiko presents a recreation of the 1970 diver’s watch, which is known as the father of the “turtle”. The new limited edition model from the Prospex series also pays tribute to the determination and skill of the team that created the 1970s Diver.
The new Prospex re-creation of this 1970 diver’s watch is slightly larger than the original but faithful in every other respect to its design. It incorporates caliber 8L35, specially designed for use in diver’s watches. This self-winding mechanical movement offers a power reserve of 50 hours.
The case has a super-hard coating and a dual-curved sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating. The watch is 200 meter water resistant. Zaratsu polished, the upper surface of the bezel boasts a perfect mirror finish.
Presented on a high strength silicone strap, this Prospex timepiece is assembled by hand in the Shizukuishi Watch Studio in northern Japan. It is a limited edition of just 2,500 pieces and available from July in Seiko Boutiques and leading Seiko retail partners worldwide.
