Launched in the 1930s, Patek Philippe’s famous World Time watch displays the time simultaneously and continuously in all 24 time zones.
It took another step forward in terms of functionality in 1999, by introducing an exclusive patented mechanism that enables its owner, when changing time zones, to correct all the displays collectively by pressing once on a single pusher, without affecting the rate accuracy of the movement. This cult watch beloved of seasoned travelers and collectors is particularly renowned for its men’s models featuring a dial center adorned with a planisphere in cloisonné enamel.
One such is Ref. 5131, produced since 2008 in a case with a cambered bezel, first in yellow-gold and then successively in white-gold, rose-gold and platinum versions.
Patek Philippe is continuing the legend of this great classic by endowing it with the same Calatrava-style case introduced in 2016 for the World Time Ref. 5230 watches with a hand guilloched dial center. It is unmistakable, with its prominent, winglet-style lugs and narrow, smoothly polished bezel.
The cloisonné enamel planisphere representing Europe, Africa and the Americas is crafted entirely by hand and is remarkable for its detail, color and depth. This jewel of rare handcraftsmanship is enriched with four yellow-gold spangles or paillons embedded in the enamel at 12 o’clock, 3 o’clock, 6 o’clock and 9 o’clock.
The dial center displays local time in the selected time zone at 12 o’clock by means of a ring-shaped hour hand – a design that belongs to the Patek Philippe World Time tradition. The local times in the 23 other time zones are read off on the 24-hour disk with day/night indication.
The caliber 240 HU self-winding movement with off-center minirotor in 22K gold may be admired in all its impeccable detail through the sapphire-crystal case back.
The new Ref. 5231J-001 in yellow gold joins Ref. 5131/1P-001, endowed with a platinum case and bracelet and a planisphere in cloisonné enamel depicting Earth as seen from the North Pole.
